Welcome to our evidence unit. This is where the behind-the-scenes work of an investigation continues [music] long after officers leave the scene. Our evidence technicians are responsible for receiving, documenting, and securely storing thousands [music] of pieces of evidence, including high-profile items such as firearms, >> [music] >> narcotics, currency, as well as many other types of property connected to the investigations. [music] Everything is tracked to preserve the chain of custody of each item that comes through. Main warehouse. [music] Total, we have about 400,000 items of evidence here in the warehouse, stored in case-specific order, >> [music] >> and given locations depending on what the items are. As you can see, our shelving goes up to 28 [music] ft. Officer intake room. This is where officers package their evidence using all the materials here that we provide [music] for them. Once they are done packaging their evidence, they put their evidence in the lockers to protect the chain of custody. [music] Evidence intake room. This is where our evidence technicians remove the evidence from the lockers. [music] They will sort, organize, and process all the evidence. They're looking for issues with packaging and handle those accordingly, [music] and then put all items in their specific locations. Everything is processed through a records management system to track chain [music] of custody. Freezers and coolers. All biological evidence that have [music] blood, DNA, and other sensitive materials are stored in these dedicated freezers and coolers to preserve them properly, ensuring they remain usable for forensic testing. [music] area. Items that are no longer needed as evidence are either returned to the owner or disposed of. Instead of just throwing [music] items away, we have processes for donation, auction, and departmental use. This is our public lobby. People [music] can come here to pick up their safekeeping and found items, as well as evidence items that are no longer needed for evidentiary purposes. The supply section provides various items for members of the police department [music] to do their job effectively. They are also the central depository for packages.
