You're a monster. I'm not a monster. >> Yeah. The world hell. >> Where in hell, dude? This is the fire against hell. >> This is the exact moment detectives realized that this man, 32-year-old [music] Chad Doerman, killed his own sons. >> You show me your hands now! >> We got to go. >> You're wanted, Chad Doerman. You got to go ahead and comply with whatever any of those commands >> Because only hours ago, officers arrived to find him in the midst of a crime scene [music] unlike anything, with Chad hunting his victims through these rural Ohio fields as they are now faced with a suspect who is either insane >> I'm dead. I'm dead, ain't I? >> You're not in hell. >> or the most evil murderer they have ever seen. >> This is fake. I'm calling everybody, my whole family to help me. Nobody would help me. >> On June 15th, 2023, the small community of Monroe Township, Ohio was rocked by an unimaginable tragedy. Around 4:00 p.m., dispatch received a heartbreaking call. >> 911, what's your emergency? My I can't get them to stop. MY MY >> HELLO. UH CAN YOU HEAR ME? >> MY MY MY THEY'RE NOT BREATHING. >> OKAY, WHAT IS THE >> NOBODY'S HELPING ME. >> HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE SHOT? >> I THINK THREE, MY THREE CHILDREN. >> THE CALLER, Laura Doerman, desperately tried to resuscitate her three young ones as police raced to the scene. In the call, she explained that her husband, Chad Doerman, shot them and that he was still at the home, not far away from her. When police arrived, they had two very important, seemingly impossible tasks. First, to save the victims. Second, to catch Chad, who was armed and dangerous, before he could inflict any more pain on the remaining members of his family. >> [groaning] >> Here. Here. >> We have subject sleeping in the car. >> YOU SHOW ME YOUR HANDS NOW. STAND UP AND WALK TO ME. STAND UP NOW. WALK TOWARDS [screaming] US. STAND UP WITH YOUR HANDS UP. >> WELL, NOW WE GOT A VISUAL ON the male. Not showing his hands. Not following commands. >> STAND UP NOW. >> NOT SHOWING HIS HANDS OR FOLLOWING COMMANDS. >> WE got to go. We got >> Dorman, Chad Dorman. >> Show us your >> SHOW ME YOUR HANDS NOW. STAND UP. STAND UP. >> MOVING. MOVING. HOLD. >> STAND UP. >> STAND UP NOW. STAND UP. STAND UP. >> PUT YOUR HANDS UP. >> 72. CALL MY CORNER. Send >> Found with there's people that requested and that's the shooter. He's not complying. >> I got him. Can you get the wallet out of my back pocket? >> Shut up, dude. You have the right to remain silent. >> 34 51. >> 1430. >> Shockingly, Chad gave in to police demands and was put in the back of the police car without a fight. He's lucky that going to jail is his fate because when officers descend on the scene to try and rescue the victims, they're met with one of the most excruciating scenes of their life. Three innocent victims. >> Oh, no, I got three of them. >> The three victims' names are Clayton, Hunter, and Chase Dorman. One officer, Deputy Sparks, desperately tries to resuscitate one of them. By now, it's clear that two of them are already gone. After trying for several minutes, Deputy Sparks is left with the horrible realization that none of the victims can be saved. In total, three people lost their lives. Their mother, Laura, survived with a gunshot wound to the hand. Her daughter also managed to survive by running to another home, but not before she did something incredibly brave. At this point, police have no idea what has happened. They hurry the survivors and the culprit to the station for questioning, but on the way, Chad proves he's not done causing trouble just yet. As one officer brings him to the station, Chad begins trying to hurt himself in the back of a police cruiser as police now attempt to stop him. >> You stop him for a second quite talking cuddle. 222 66 and 6. I don't know if he's trying to wrap it around >> Sit back. >> It's like it hurts so bad I can't sit still. >> Sit back. >> Finally, Chad is brought to the station in one piece, physically at least, because mentally he tries to show he's anything but. >> Why don't we do this? Why don't you just Why don't you just tell me what's going on, what happened today? >> I don't know. I don't have anything to say. I don't really know. >> And that's okay. Maybe we can work through this. Maybe we can help you remember. All right? >> I have no clue. >> All right. >> What am I doing in here? >> Well, that's what we're trying to figure out. All right? When's the last time you slept? >> Monday. Do you know what day it is today? Thursday. No. Friday. >> No, you're right. It's Thursday. Do you know what the date is? It's all right. I had to look myself. >> Today is the 15th. >> Why don't you take a drink of water? Maybe that'll help you. Uh maybe [clears throat] you're just a little dehydrated. >> [clears throat] >> So you haven't slept since Monday? Are you tired now? >> I don't know. >> What happened today? >> They were letting hell like the word hell. It's in the Bible. You shoot You shoot first. Second. Third. first your right. I don't first. >> You didn't what? >> What? >> You didn't first >> No, I didn't get it. >> You didn't your life. >> I don't I don't know. >> Why why is that? >> You know who I am. What? >> [snorts] >> You didn't >> When you say that, do you mean you just kind of lost your way? >> will be for a lawyer. I I really don't know. Like, give me a couple of days and >> [snorts] >> let me talk to a lawyer so that way I can get nice good answers. >> I understand. >> [snorts] >> Do you have a lawyer? >> We have family lawyers. >> Who is that? Is [snorts] there somebody I can call? >> Keith. >> Is he he related to you? >> Mhm. Yes. >> Who's Keith to you? >> What? My dad. >> [snorts] >> All right. >> And She's in the CIA. Carmen. >> Is she a lawyer? >> Huh? >> Is Ruby a lawyer? >> She's in the CIA. >> All right. I know I heard you say that. I didn't know if you maybe she was a CIA uh attorney or Um but you said your dad is a lawyer. >> Mhm. We have a family lawyer. >> All right. But you don't know who that is. >> No. >> All right. >> I don't think I've ever met you either. >> You Which Matt? I remember you. You're the nice guy that lives on Virginia Drive. >> I was in hell. Straight hell. >> Initially, police believed that Chad was under the influence of something based on his odd behavior and ramblings about hell. A toxicology report, however, proved that there was absolutely nothing in his system. At this [music] point, police know the general timeline of what happened leading up to the shooting. Chad was acting strange, then went to work, and then returned from work saying [music] he had forgotten something. Then he asked his family to lie down in bed and take a nap [music] with him. And soon after everyone laid down, he returned to the room with a gun in hand. >> Do you remember having to come home cuz you forgot some tools? >> Tape. >> Tape? Like um uh the silver uh duct tape? Or what kind of tape are we talking about? >> Duct tape. >> Did you get it? >> Yes. >> [clears throat] >> And then did you go back to work after you got the tape? >> Mhm. >> And then what happened? >> Um where were you working at today? >> Like on site? A job >> Ortho Phoenix. >> Where? >> Ortho Phoenix. >> Oh, okay. >> [snorts] >> And uh where's that at? In Amelia? In Anderson? >> Yes. >> And then at some point did you decide that you wanted to go home and take a nap? Or did you finish out your work day? >> Please. >> [clears throat] >> Did you come home again early? Let me ask you this, did anybody at work irritate you today? Your boss? A co-worker? Chad, I need you to stay with me. It's important. You good? Chad. You good? I need you to stay with me. This is important, all right? I'd like to know what happened today. >> Throughout the interrogation, keep in mind that Chad's wife's name is redacted, but she told the police every bit of what happened. For weeks, Chad was picking fights with her and their sons. He seemed constantly enraged, rambled about religion regularly, and seemed to have nothing but contempt for his family. And while he's willing to say very little about this, [music] his neighbors say a whole lot about what they heard living nearby. >> You guys never witness anything out of the ordinary, like nobody like fighting or anything around over there, like >> No. >> This guy's just blocks away from everything that way, and >> Yeah. >> I mean, but when we drive past, you can hear the kids yelling and carrying on and that mostly when the windows are open, but nothing else. >> Were you able to make out what's being said or anything? Was it usually a male or female yelling? Male yelling? >> I don't really know what he's saying, but it's it's definitely like a heated argument. >> Yeah, actually, now that I think of it, >> [laughter] >> do you remember the other night there was like someone was like really mad? >> Yeah. Well, I like again, it's hard to tell where it's coming from, but yeah, there there is usually a man who sounds angry. >> Yes. Someone like a few days ago was yelling. I don't even remember what day it was. And we were outside and it was like I think it was dark and we were like, "Wow." >> We were like, "I hope everything's okay." cuz it was >> Was it coming from that direction? >> It was this way, yeah. >> Was that during the day or at night? >> It was like dusk when we heard it. >> Yeah, I think so, cuz I think we were putting the ducks away. >> Yeah. >> In his interrogation, Chad denies arguing with his wife, and when he's faced with tough questions, he takes the usual way out by saying he doesn't remember, which is unfortunate given that the details of this case will be something our team remembers for the rest of their lives. >> Have you You've arguing lately? At all? Now, don't tell me no cuz I argue with my wife all the time. Marriage is not easy. >> I don't really argue. I just kind of turn around and walk away. >> Well, I guess I don't argue with my wife either. She's always right because when I try and argue it just makes it worse. Um but I know that marriage is difficult and if you're not arguing from time to time then it's not you know, you're not having a meaningful marriage. So, what were you arguing about or it about? Do you remember me asking you today if everything was okay with you? >> From my thoughts. And crazy thoughts. And how I needed to go to doctors. And I scheduled appointment at the little clinic to go there. From my thoughts. >> [clears throat] >> And then I didn't go there. I went home. >> Can you tell us a little bit about why you wanted to go to the little clinic? >> It was poisoning me for a while. >> When? >> Uh months ago. He's putting [ __ ] in my food. It's about I can't even eat because I would taste it. And it was bad. >> Did you get that today because you seem like you're you're in and out of it like >> I don't know. Last night I couldn't sleep. So that I can sleep, I ended up drinking beer. >> That's >> Listen. >> And >> Do you normally drink beer to help you relax and sleep? >> Yeah. Sometimes, but now but I feel like for the last 8 months I feel [snorts] off. I don't know. It's off. I feel off. >> You seem a little off this this afternoon. You feel like you're in and out of thinking things. >> Yep. Yep. >> Do your thoughts today do they bother you? >> Never listen. I listen to you. Never. You said I got bad thoughts, so I got bad thoughts. Help me out. Take me to the doctor, you know. Cuz I don't know. I don't know where I was going. Look at all of everybody. I know. My whole family to help me. Nobody would help me. BUT NOBODY HELPED ME AT ALL. JUST TAKE ME SOMEWHERE. >> WE'RE GOING TO GET YOU some help, Chad. That's why we're here. >> Nobody would help. >> That's why we're here. >> The masked man asked and asked. I CAN'T DO EVERYTHING. >> NO, you can't. >> I can't do it all. I can't do it all. >> Is that why you were mad today? >> I wasn't mad. >> Cuz you couldn't get help? >> No mad. No mad at all. Let me get something to drink too. I wasn't drinking. No mad. >> You guys are >> What happened? >> That's what I want to ask you what happened today. I don't know. I wasn't there. >> I don't know what happened today. What happened? >> You tell me. >> I don't know. >> Well, when you came home from work did you go and get your Mossberg? >> What? >> When you came home from work today did you go to to your safe? >> Yep, full tape. >> Say what? >> Full tape. >> Yeah, earlier today you had to come home cuz you forgot tape. And then um later today, did you get in your safe? >> Whether Chad had been asking his family for help hasn't been disclosed. Now, we believe everyone should have access to mental health help if needed. But the question is, was Chad actually psychotic and unaware of his actions or was he just a violent angry dad who gave in to his mental illness? In the past, Chad had been convicted of DV for attacking his father in an altercation. In another incident, he threatened to kill his neighbor's dog [music] after it came into his yard. And in the weeks leading up to the shooting, a neighbor recalls seeing Chad attacking his sons. And sadly, we don't mean in a fun roughhousing way. Whether these actions were actually influenced by his belief that the end times [music] were coming and he was living in the Bible, we may never truly know. >> And then your verbal thoughts? Again, I was living in the Bible. >> Mhm. Listen. Listen, keep going. >> It's It's >> Tell me about these thoughts you were having. >> Mhm. I got to Um Mhm. >> Yeah, the Bible's important to me. Well, I'm curious of what kind of things you were thinking. >> But Mhm. >> Were you thinking about off? >> No. >> Were you thinking about hurting >> I was going to get to hell. I can get to heaven. Cuz we're living in hell. >> So, you wanted to go to heaven? What about to heaven? And how were you going to send them to heaven? Chad, did you shoot Yeah. Is that how you were going to send them to heaven? You shook your head no. Well, then how they're in heaven now? Yes. And how? With heaven. Why? Like an angel? Like an angel. Is that way you deserve to be in heaven? In heaven. In a better place? Yes. And and so you your your idea was to make God feel in a good way. In a kind way? >> Nothing about what Chad did could possibly be considered to have been done in a kind way. After Chad shot Hunter, Laura, horrified, screamed at her other sons to run while she tried to save Hunter, but he was already gone. The noise alerted the couple's daughter, who sprinted into the bedroom and rushed Clayton and Chase out of the home, urging them to keep running. But tragically, no one could run fast enough. Chad rushed out of the house and caught up to Clayton in the field. The daughter sprinted back to rescue the youngest Chase and carried him out of the home, but just as she reached the road, Chad stopped her and demanded that she put Chase down. She refused, and in response, Chad tried to fire, but his gun was empty. In that moment, Laura emerged from the home and ran to Clayton. Sadly, it was too late, and when he saw his mother, Chase ran after her. Meanwhile, Alexis sprinted for the nearby police station, begging for help. She miraculously got out without a scratch, but back at the scene, her stepfather had reloaded his weapon. Laura desperately wrestled with him for the gun, and in the struggle, she was wounded, but she kept fighting, trying to protect Chase, until sadly, she was overpowered and Chase became the third victim. When it was over Chad left Lara alive, walked back to the steps, and watched emotionless as she stayed with their sons. After inflicting so much violence, conveniently Chad has zero memory of the events. >> Do you remember getting any of those rifles today? >> No. No. >> Did you have any need for them today? Is there any reason why you would have needed them today? >> No. >> And the reason I'm asking is because earlier you told Mike and I that you wanted to send Evan >> Evan >> Um and so I'm that's why I'm asking. Did you need that rifle to do that? Well, I don't I'm I'm confused. I don't know how you would send to heaven if you didn't use your rifle. >> But >> How would you have done that? And I'm trying to figure out why I don't know. >> I'm a cop. >> I wasn't there. You got to help me, Chad. >> I wasn't there. >> Uh you were there. You were definitely there, Chad. >> I wasn't there. >> Yes. You're home. >> I wasn't there. >> Chad, you were there. >> I was working. >> You did work today, but you came home. >> Huh? I didn't go home. There ain't no way I went home. >> Tell me where you >> What time is it? >> It is now >> What are we doing here? >> 7:10. >> What are we doing here? It's 7:10 at night. >> Chad, I want to know who shot >> I'm a cop. >> shot Yes. >> What are you talking about? >> Do you remember Chase through your yard? >> What? >> Do you remember Chase >> I'm through the the yard through the field there? A neighbor told us that you were chasing >> I'm going to talk. I'm going to talk. >> through this field. That's why I printed that picture out. I wanted you to show me where you were chasing >> What are you talking about? What are you talking about? Holy [ __ ] >> So, what happened? >> Hello. I'm dead, alien. You're not in hell. You're not dead, Chad. You're not dead. Talking to me and Mike. >> I'm just going to do this until but the fire comes up. Then I'll just [snorts] be burning. You said this room? >> Do you ever have thoughts of hurting other people? Is that something that you were going to talk to the doctor about? Never? >> I should be, but I would never hurt anybody like shoot anybody or anything like that. I'll do knuckles and knuckles with you all day. >> I don't know the [ __ ] You know, tell me you shot him. >> That wasn't Chad. >> If it wasn't Chad, who was it? Cuz you know who it was. >> If it wasn't Chad. >> Was it the bad version of Chad that you don't like? The Chad that has problems with his thoughts, that Chad? >> Holy [ __ ] >> Holy shit's right. >> Can you take these off me? I will not hurt you guys whatsoever. >> No, I don't hurt nobody. >> No, but I will never hurt anybody. I don't hurt anybody. >> Well, then why are dead? >> I have no clue. >> We talked a little bit earlier um about this the kind of ways you feel the two Chads. The the the Chad you feel particularly good and needs some help. And then the other Chad that I guess goes to work every day and makes a living and comes home and cuts the grass and has a beer. Are those two different Chads? You know what I mean? >> What? >> So there's the Chad that goes to work every day and makes a living, brings home a paycheck, cuts the grass, has a beer at night, gets along pretty well, has a family, goes hunting, goes fishing. Sounds like a pretty happy Chad. >> Yeah. >> And then there's this other Chad that has these feelings. You know what I mean? And doesn't feel good. Is so that's a that's a different Chad? >> Yeah. >> You know? And so how often does this other Chad that doesn't feel good? Is that like every day? Is that getting worse? Is that why you asked for help? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. But you didn't get the help that you needed. >> No. >> So this other Chad that doesn't feel good, is he the one that wants to go to heaven? It is probably not the good Chad, the Chad that goes to work every day and drinks a beer and cuts the grass. It's probably a different Chad, right? So could this other Chad have done that which is why you don't remember it? You think that's that could happen? >> What? >> So it sounds like there's two different Chads. >> What? >> Shot. >> I'm a doctor. >> That wouldn't be the Chad that goes to work every day. >> What's that? >> Did I shoot? Did I shoot? >> You did. Yes, Chad. >> I'm not going to lie to you. Yes. And what Mike is asking, was it the the bad Chad that you don't like? Or was it the the happy Chad? Which Chad was it? >> No. No, I didn't. >> Well, I didn't >> I don't deserve it. >> Well, you said you wanted them to have >> What? >> that, right? This is hell. >> No. >> Chad, we're having a conversation. This is hell right here. >> No. >> Follow me on this, Chad. >> I'm in hell. >> Chad, follow me. >> Why would you be in hell? >> Cuz it's the end of the world. >> Why? I mean, what's >> What do you mean? >> Why are you in hell? Why do you think you're in hell? >> Wait. What's going on? >> [sighs and gasps] >> All right, follow me, Chad. >> No, I want to take a break. >> At home, I told you I have a safe in my house. And I have a rifle. If I told you that nobody else had access to that safe, and only my DNA was on that rifle, who do you think shot that rifle? Make yourself a detective. You are a detective, and you want to know who shot my rifle, and you know that I'm the only one that has access to it, and only my only my DNA >> Who do you think think shot my rifle? >> Bloody driver. >> What's that mean, Chad? What kind of man do you want to be, Chad? Do you want to be a monster >> No. >> that just >> No. >> kill ones >> I would never No. No. Or I don't want to be that kind of man. >> Or are you Did you just have a breakdown? >> A breakdown? No. No. >> Which is it, Chad? >> I don't want to be that kind of man. >> Are you a monster? >> I'm not a monster. >> Or are you Chad who just had a breakdown and made some mistakes today, some bad mistakes? But we all make mistakes. >> I'm not a monster. >> So, which which one are you? Tell me. >> I'm not a monster. >> I don't think you are, either. I think you had a mental breakdown today. But I also think you know what happened and you're scared to tell me. >> I'm not scared. >> [snorts] >> I'm not scared of anything. >> I haven't lied to you. Don't lie to me. >> I'm not. >> I've been nothing but kind to you. >> I know. And I respect you, sir. >> But there's no doubt in our mind that you shot >> I'm a cop. >> But we want to know why, what happened. >> I don't know. >> And I need you to be honest with me and tell me. >> I don't know why. I don't know what happened. I don't know anything. >> You're a monster. >> I'm not a monster. >> [ __ ] >> I'm not a monster. >> Finally, Chad admits that he had a plan and a specific order so that his sons would go to heaven and escape the end of the world. Police try to get him to say things more definitively, but he's evasive and what he does say has been redacted by law enforcement for the family's privacy. Even as he does explain it, he doesn't seem to realize the gravity of what he's saying. >> I just lined up. >> Lined up? >> [clears throat] >> And who did first? >> I messed up. In order to get ahead of it >> [snorts] >> in order for it all to work. That'd be 4-3-2-1. Then Yeah, what uh the Cuz If you get a help. What did you say? >> What order? First. >> I don't know. >> Well, see, now we're back to the I don't know [ __ ] We were We were having a good conversation, and now we're back to the I don't know crap. Chad. >> I don't know. >> You just told us you lied up and you had an order, and it has to be in a certain order. So, what's that order? >> I don't know. >> Chad's journey to trial was a long one. In jail, he was placed into protective custody due to threats from other inmates and threats he made about taking his own life. Despite this, he and his team argued against the death penalty he was facing and claimed that Chad wasn't guilty of the crime due to his mental instability. Ultimately, however, Chad agreed to plead guilty in exchange for three life sentences without the possibility of parole. At trial, his stepdaughter wrote a devastating victim impact statement that was read by a representative. >> Not just a stepdad. I am the person who I am today because of you. And no matter what anyone says, you raised me well. And you gave me an amazing life, and I will forever be grateful for the memories and time you spent with me. Ever since what you've done, my life has been something I would never wish upon any family. It is the most heartbreaking and emotional thing anyone could go through. >> Our thoughts are with Laura and her daughter, who who this pain and who we hope will experience nothing but peace and healing.
