I'm Captain Justin Tidwell with the San Antonio Police Department. This critical incident video release is intended to provide you with information as the department currently understands it about an officer-involved shooting that occurred on September 1st, 2026 in the 5300 block of Buena Vista Street. I will walk you through the video relevant to the facts of this incident as we know them so far. Content of this video may not be suitable for all audiences. Viewer discretion is advised. Street crimes officers riding in the same unit attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a traffic violation. As the vehicle came to a stop, the suspect exited the passenger side of the vehicle and fled on foot. The cover officer pursued the suspect on foot while the primary officer attempted to detain the driver of the vehicle. While attempting to detain the driver, the primary officer heard gunshots and immediately ran to check on his partner. This is the body worn camera view of the primary officer who attempted to detain the driver. >> Get your [ __ ] hands up. Do not TOUCH IT. DON'T TOUCH IT. >> HEY, don't touch it. DON'T TOUCH IT. >> [applause] >> MOVE. MOVE. >> SHOTS FIRED. SHOTS FIRED. >> HEY, get your [ __ ] HANDS UP. [ __ ] HANDS UP. DON'T [ __ ] REACH. YOU'RE GOING TO GET SHOT. HANDS STRAIGHT UP IN THE AIR. IN THE AIR. GET YOUR [ __ ] HANDS IN THE AIR. WALK OUT TOWARDS ME RIGHT NOW. GET THE [ __ ] OUT HERE. GET ON YOUR [ __ ] FACE. GET ON YOUR [ __ ] FACE. >> HOLD ON. ALL RIGHT, HOLD ON. HOLD ON. HOLD >> THE COVER officer was unable to activate his body worn camera. His perspective of the incident was not captured. The cover officer who pursued the suspect from the vehicle attempted to take him into custody, at which time a struggle ensued. During the struggle, the cover officer felt a gun in the suspect's waistline. The cover officer tried to grab the gun, but the suspect continued to struggle and placed his hand on the weapon. The cover officer discharged his firearm multiple times, striking the suspect. The suspect fled the scene, but was subsequently located hiding in a bush. The primary officer yelled commands and apprehended the suspect in the 5300 block of Monterey Street. Officers immediately began life-saving measures and the suspect was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. The suspect, 18-year-old Joe Anthony Guzman, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer. This is an image of the firearm recovered at the scene. Investigations into the deadly force are comprehensive and can take over a year. A reminder, this is our current understanding of the situation and can change as investigators gather more information. The San Antonio Police Department does not make any determinations as to whether procedures were followed until all facts are known. All officer-involved shootings are forwarded to the Bear County District Attorney's Office for review. As of this publication, the investigation remains ongoing.
