In the quiet early hours of August 8th, 2020, a Roy City police officer pulled over what looked like an ordinary gray Volkswagen Passat on 1900 West. The reason a license plate partly covered with paper, a harmless prank, according to the driver, 21-year-old Aaron Michael Griffin. But this wasn't just any driver. Just one day earlier, Griffin had been hailed as a hero for pulling a woman from a burning car. Now only 24 hours later, his life was spiraling toward a deadly encounter that no one saw coming. >> Hi. >> How you doing? >> I'm good. I'm Roy Police Department. >> How you doing? >> I'm good. Why do you got paper covering up your license plate? >> That's what I just realized when we were leaving and I saw you and I was thinking about it cuz >> I was playing a joke on my sister. >> So I covered it up and then I just didn't take it off. >> Okay. But you cover it. So she didn't >> No, it's so she wouldn't know that it was my car. >> Oh, okay. You got a brake light out, too. Your driver's side one. >> Yeah, I get a warning right here. But >> Oh, does it tell you? >> Yeah, it says that it's defective. >> Say that again. >> It says that it's defective. >> Oh, yeah. You probably just got to change the bulb cuz it's lit up with your headlights and stuff on. It's just when you press the brake, it doesn't light up. >> So, so if I switch this, can you check to see if it works now? If I >> Sure. Can I see your license real quick? >> Yeah. >> Proof of insurance. Is this vehicle registered to you or? >> Yes. Okay. Here's the registration tune if you want that. >> Yeah, I'd appreciate that. Thank you. You have your insurance card back. >> What were you trying to do? Turn them off. >> Turn what? >> You said if you do something. >> No, I'm saying. So, I'm pressing it right now. So, I flip this switch and I just want to see if it works. >> So, let go of it. Yeah, >> it does work now. >> Yeah. >> Oh, your bright's got to be on. >> That's weird. Yeah, cuz I keep it right there for that reason. So >> Oh, yeah. Cuz you can't drive with your brights on either. So you can, but when cars are approaching you. >> Well, >> anyway, >> that solves that, I guess. >> Okay. All right. Hang tight for me. Just stay in the car. Okay. Here's your license back and your registration. Do you want to hop out and take that off now? >> Hop out and take that off. the paper >> off your plate. >> Oh, yeah. Sorry. >> Either one of you. You mind if I get your info, sir? >> Mine? >> Yeah. >> Brian James? >> You're Brian James? Okay. >> And then you're talking about my leg. >> Uhhuh. No. >> How are you guys? Are you guys related or anything? >> No, he's just a friend of mine. >> Oh, okay. >> What the >> How do you spell your first name? >> G R Y A N. >> James. >> My name is James. J A M E. J A M E S. >> What's your date of birth? >> Okay. All right. Cool. You're squared away. [Music] [Music] You roll this window. >> Do you have ID with you, Brian? >> I do not. >> Okay. Cuz I can't find anything with your name on it. >> What? >> I can't find anything. Do you have a Utah license? >> I do not have a license. No. Do you >> Have you ever gotten an ID card? >> Not in Utah? No. >> Not in Utah. Where you from? >> Wyoming. >> Wyoming. Yes, sir. >> Have you ever been in trouble with law enforcement here before? >> Not in Utah? No. >> Not ever? >> Not in Utah? No. >> Are you lying to me about your identity? >> No, I'm not, sir. >> Okay. What's your social? >> Okay. Don't leave. Don't get out of the car. He said, "Okay." >> As the officer returned to his patrol car, the suspect suddenly sped away from the traffic stop. The officer quickly initiated a pursuit, but it was called off shortly afterward due to safety concerns. Following the termination of the chase, Roy City police units began canvasing the area in search of the fleeing vehicle. Before long, a Roy City K9 officer discovered the car abandoned in a field southeast of Vasa Fitness in Clinton. The officer drove into the field and deployed his K-9 partner, Mick, to track down and apprehend the suspect, Aaron, who was seen running from the vehicle. >> Stop. I'm going to send the dog. He will bite you. He will bite you. Stop. Weber 3. The one I got my dog chasing through the field. Get on the [ __ ] ground. Get on the ground. [ __ ] weird. Three up. Weaver's there. Two more shots fired. Loose. >> Are you good? >> I'm good. My dog's shot. >> Where are they at? >> You ran that way. >> Your dog? >> Yeah. >> Where's He's running this way. >> Come here. Heat. Heat. [Music] [Music] There's one right here. Hey, show. Let me show youring hand. >> By dawn, Griffin was dead following a violent exchange on the Roy Clinton border. Investigators learned he had fired at officers wounding K9 Mick, who miraculously survived after emergency surgery. The firearm he used had been reported stolen. and the Davis County Attorney's Office later ruled the officer's response justified. Griffin's death left the community torn. Remembered by police as an armed suspect, yet by friends as a kind soul lost to relapse and regret. His story still raises a haunting question about what kind of pain can twist a hero's story into tragedy so quickly. In the still darkness before dawn on May 6th, 2021, two Casper police officers approached a parked vehicle on East H Street. Inside were two people, neither giving off the impression that danger was seconds away, but the calm broke instantly when the driver stepped out and the passenger slid behind the wheel. >> How's it going, guys? >> Hey, he's coming up on that side. He'll talk to you. [Music] How you doing tonight, man? >> Good. How you doing? >> What are you guys out doing? >> 6492. [Music] >> You guys finally have the question in. Do you ask him? Sorry. >> Sean O2. [Music] >> I'm not sure. >> Yeah. >> Can you hold up your phone? >> Yeah. Okay. Do that. We'll be right back. [Music] still awake or uh getting ready for bed? >> What's up? >> Still awake or getting ready for bed? >> What do you mean? >> Like you just just wake up and you're going to work or you've been up all night? >> No, we actually just got off the bike. We've been working on this bike. >> Oh, okay. Nice. What are you working on? It's just little mini bike back there actually. >> Is it? >> Did you get it running or what? >> That's cool. >> State Farm insurance. [Music] >> Whose vehicle is this? >> Yours? Is it registered to you or somebody else? I'm lying to my girlfriend. >> Okay. What's her name? >> Bridget. >> Bridget. Okay. >> You don't have to. >> Hey, what's your name again, man? Sean. >> Sean. >> Can I talk to you real quick? If you hop out for me real fast. >> I'm not answering questions. I'd like >> That's fine. I'd just like you to hop out real quick for me. >> Okay. I'm still asking you to hop out of the car though, Sean. >> Hey, so listen to me. Don't drive off. >> Don't drive off. Hey. Uh-uh. What are we doing? Don't drive. Hey, what are you doing, man? >> Pull him back there. >> He's drive. Hey. Hey. Don't do it. Don't [ __ ] do it. >> I will [ __ ] Show me your hands right now. Put your [ __ ] hands up. Don't you [ __ ] do it. Don't you If you drive away with me, I will [ __ ] kill you. Hey. Hey. I'm going to [ __ ] shoot you. I'm going to [ __ ] shoot you. Well, I will [ __ ] shoot you. Stop. Stop the [ __ ] car. I'm going to [ __ ] shoot you right now. Last chance. I'm going to [ __ ] shoot you. >> Shoot me. >> I'm going to [ __ ] shoot you. >> Shoot me then. >> What are you doing? >> I'm going. >> Stop the [ __ ] car. >> Stop racing. Stop reaching. >> Stop reaching. 329 shots fired. 329 shots fired. [Music] >> Show me your ass. Show me your ass. 329. We're F Street North or Beverly Street. Brito Rock Trail again. I got shots fired. One m down. Start EMS. >> Moments later, the passenger turned driver was pronounced dead after the vehicle was safely stopped along the interstate. Both officers escaped injury, though the primary officer had fired his weapon during the confrontation. The Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigations took over the case for independent review while the two officers were placed on paid administrative leave for the Casper Police Department. It was another harsh reminder of how fast a routine stop can spiral into chaos. On the morning of July 3rd, 2024, a Georgia State Patrol trooper cruising along State Route 23 clocked a blue motorcycle flying well above the posted limit. What began as a simple traffic stop quickly turned into something far more dangerous. When the trooper flipped around and activated his lights, the rider opened the throttle, speeding toward the city limits of Nonta, weaving past cars and tractor trailers like a man possessed. The chase lasted only minutes, but what happened next would leave first responders shaken. >> I can be updated if he ain't getting too. All right, coming up on 520 AC about to run the red light. Just ran the red light. Clear. Clear. [Music] Coming up on Grant Lake Street. All right, he just laid it down. 1050. He just got ejected. 1050. 1050. Go ahead and get EMS to me. Oh, way cross his uh he's going to be decapitated. His head is decapitated. Go ahead. Send me everybody you got. Oh man. Yes, sir. I'm going to try to cover him up as much as I can. Yeah. Let's try Let's try a couple more. I If I got another one, I I will I will do. So, I'm going to check and see if I got another one, and then we'll go from there. The fleeing motorcyclist, later identified as Mark Edward John's, struck a truck's mirror, lost control, and was ejected in a catastrophic crash near the local post office. Investigators confirmed excessive speed and reckless passing as the main causes of the fatal impact. No other drivers were seriously hurt, but the scene was described as one of the most horrific single vehicle crashes Brantley County had seen in years. Late on June 24th, 2023, trooper A. Matthews was patrolling the I75 I85 connector when a black Chevrolet Camaro roared past him, weaving through lanes and tailgating traffic like the highway was a racetrack. The car wore Florida tags, but its driving spoke the universal language of trouble. When the trooper hit his lights, the driver hit the gas. Within seconds, Atlanta's Midnight Skyline became the backdrop to another crazy high-speed pursuit. Maybe back up. Clear back to the air. [Music] 75 38. [Music] 75 >> 1080 connector north 17th black Camaro some kind of handwritten dealer tag coming up on 17th far right lane for all unit 103 1033 unit 75 and 1080 connected north of 17 >> coming up on a split coming up on a split Careful coming. >> All right. Staying 85 north. Staying 85 north. >> Clear. 85 north. >> 1050. Bad. 1050. Bad. 1050. Multiple vehicles at uh standby. [Music] >> See [ __ ] hands. Let me see your [ __ ] hands. Hands up. Hands up. Hands out. Hands out. Hands out. Let me see both your hands. I'll shoot your ass right [ __ ] now. Get out and get on the ground. Give me some units. Atlanta, get on the [ __ ] ground right now. You two get out. Let me see. Back your ass. Back your [ __ ] ass now. Hey, stay back for me. Just stay back for a second. >> Who you with? Come over here for me. >> Vehicle clear. All right, come back here. I got two on the ground right here. >> I got off duty Fton County out with me. You stand up. When you stand up, face away from me. You in the white shirt, stay on your [ __ ] face. Nobody told you to do [ __ ] Stand up. Black shirt, stand up. Walk back to me. Walk back to me. Back to me. White shirt, you stay right there. Come here. Turn around. Face away. Put your hands behind your back. All right. White shirt, stand up. >> Do the same thing he did. Face away from me and walk backwards. Keep both your hands up, man. Hey, get up. Get on the [ __ ] throw [ __ ] off the [ __ ] side of the interstate, man. Damn. The chase ended violently when the Camaro lost control trying to squeeze between two vehicles crashing hard into the concrete median on Interstate 85. The driver, Avon Summers, and his passenger were both taken into custody with help from an offduty Fulton County deputy. He was charged with reckless driving, driving under the influence, and possession of marijuana, among others. No other motorists were seriously hurt. A rare stroke of luck considering the chaos left behind. At 4 and 15 p.m. on August 26th, 2024, Arkansas State Trooper Bratton spotted a gold Lincoln Town Car blazing down Interstate 630, 80 mph through a 50 mph construction zone. As the trooper closed in, the car began darting between lanes, its driver seemingly determined to tempt disaster. Another time. [Music] [Music] Who's running across 6:30? Where you at? >> White belt, black shirt, maroon pants. [Music] >> We're getting too. The suspect later identified as Joshua Haney, bolted from the wreckage and sprinted across live traffic before being caught by trooper Bratton and a Palaski County deputy. A loaded Century Arms 9 Milliona pistol was recovered from the front seat, later confirmed stolen along with a fictitious tag attached to the vehicle. Haney was hospitalized for minor injuries and charged with a long list of offenses. Another close call on Arkansas highways where bad choices meet worse outcomes. On the afternoon of October 4th, 2023, Florida law enforcement was on high alert. The Jupiter Police Department had been tracking an attempted murder suspect, Nicholas Partesco, accused of stabbing a physician. As the white Lexus he was driving sped north on Interstate 95, deputies from multiple agencies braced for what was about to become a full-scale pursuit. [Music] Dispatch has been booked. [Music] >> This batch has been locked. [Music] coming on the left. >> Dispatch has been [Music] I'm getting ahead. I'm getting ahead. >> Dispatch has been located. [Music] Dispatch has been [Music] [Applause] [Music] After a successful pit maneuver, the Lexus spun out, ending the tent's pursuit. The suspect was arrested and turned over to Jupiter police, facing charges of fleeing and eluding at high speed under Florida statute along with the underlying attempted murder investigation. No deputies were injured, but the case became another reminder that desperation behind the wheel often ends in metal sirens and cuffs. On September 14th, 2022, a Georgia State Patrol challenger attempted to stop a white Ford Taurus, whose driver was distracted by a cell phone on Veterans Parkway. But instead of pulling over, the driver, later identified as Javon Raheem Richards, swerved into oncoming lanes and accelerated head-on toward traffic. [Music] 7 Liberty John 647 TJ 647 [Music] area. [Music] Good job. 33 Liberty John 67 TJ. [Music] The Taurus collided with another vehicle at high speed, killing Richards instantly and injuring several others. Inside the wreck, troopers found a loaded Glock 45, nearly 2 lbs of marijuana cash, and drug paraphernalia evidence that revealed why he may have been so desperate to escape. Medical staff later pronounced him dead at Memorial Health University Medical Center. On June 29th, 2023, at around 2 p.m., deputies in Charles County, Maryland, were called to a parking lot on Actton Lane in Waldorf. Reports came in of a woman being attacked by a man during what looked like a carjacking attempt. What began as a violent encounter in a quiet lot quickly spilled out onto the streets, setting off a pursuit that would push both the suspect and law enforcement to their breaking points. [Music] direct southbound 205. Stop on 205. Try to get fixed at 5205 lane 1650. [Music] The runaway vehicle crossed into oncoming lanes and struck a trailer truck with devastating force. The suspect was killed instantly, his gamble ending in twisted steel and smoke. For deputies, it was a brutal reminder that crime doesn't just destroy lives in parking lots. It can follow you onto the highway and leave nothing but wreckage behind. After weeks of tracking stolen construction equipment across Florida, detectives in Dotto County finally caught up to their suspect on June 9th, 2024. Behind the wheel of a black Dodge Ram and towing a stolen trailer, Yambi Pereira Nunez tore down State Road 70, refusing to stop for deputies. With a record as a convicted felon and ties to multiple theft rings, Nunez was the kind of suspect who'd rather risk everything than pull over quietly. Pepper. >> Yeah. >> He recovered back. It's going westbound on 731. Vehicle recovered back. Going westbound on 731. >> Repeat it again, Zach. Don't do that again. Speed 75 mph. Back. Back off of it. [Music] Just 14 county is going to try to set up at the county line. Just 14. Zach, is that your tire or is that his [Music] >> Zach? We're going to be coming up to another intersection. It's going to be a hard left. Just be prepared. [Applause] 1867. >> You got a car coming out. [Music] Hit it. >> Signal for roller EMS. Please go forward. Roll the DM. [Music] >> Nunez was arrested without further resistance. Deputies recovered the stolen vehicle, connected it to several heavy equipment thefts, and obtained a search warrant for additional evidence. Nunez now faces a long list of charges. grand theft, fleeing and eluding, and possession by a convicted felon, among others. For Florida deputies, it was one more victory in a month's long game of cat-and- mouse played across county lines. That's one pursuit down, but trust me, it's only the beginning of what's waiting next. Check out the next video and see why no two chases ever end the same way.
