Well, Anna's dead and you're good friends with her, so that's what we want to talk about. So, right now, we know you're the last person with her, right? What led to Anna's death? >> I don't even know what what happened to be honest. >> This is Jorge Ciss, and he is the last person ever seen with 22-year-old Anna Rascin before she disappeared on this remote Colorado mountain. miles away from civilization in sub-zero weather, what now follows will be a relentless investigation [music] to find out what happened on these snowclad peaks. And as the dark hours toil on, they're met with the realization that he may be much, much closer than they think. >> Michael, was that you that made noise? >> Oh my goodness. On a freezing night in the middle of winter, miles and miles away from civilization, police high in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado found themselves face to face with a mystery. A vehicle in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by nothing but pine trees and snow. At 7,000 ft above sea level, this mountain pass is one of the coldest in the United States. This time of year, temperatures frequently plummet below zero, and blizzard conditions can blanket the area in several feet of snow, which has police asking, "Where on earth has the car's driver gone?" The car is registered to 22-year-old Anna Rascin, who is nowhere to be found. Police know that they're currently standing several miles from the nearest building, let alone town. With hundreds of square miles of dense forests surrounding them with the isolation and those temperatures, Anna's chances of survival outside her vehicle are near zero. Even more concerning for police is the fact that inside her whole life and anything she'd need to survive is on full display. A closet worth of clothes, food, toiletries, children's toys, items she wouldn't just up and abandon. >> Oh my goodness, >> guys. This might take us a little bit of time. Well, let's >> At least not without someone else forcing her to. And in the snow around the vehicle, police find signs that wherever Anna may be, she's likely not alone. Around the car, officers discover two sets of footprints. One that appears to be Anna's and the other that appears to belong to a man. Now, they don't just have one missing person, they have two. And as they head back to the car to call in this horrific realization, they're met with news that adds a brand new layer of mystery to the scene in front of them because one of the people they're searching for, they're already dead. >> 911, what is your emergency? >> Hello. >> Okay. And you don't know the person? >> I have no idea. They're face down. The is not moving. >> Okay. And they're cold to the touch. >> Yes. Yes. I can't tell if it's a female or male. I'm thinking female from the hair. >> Okay. >> I'm not sure though. >> Okay. >> Hands are pretty I don't know what going on in here. >> From the isolated community of Arrowhead, police received a frantic 911 call. A homeowner had returned to his remote cabin after weeks away and inside found a brutal crime scene where a young woman laid dead on his living room floor. Police raced through the snow to the cabin, unsure if the killer was still lurking nearby. Because in a community this far removed from the rest of the world, there are only so many places you can go. Armed, police crept into the home, slowly clearing it room by room. >> [snorts] >> some major trauma. >> Did you see a pair of shoes by the door? Lying beside a coffee table, police discovered the body of 22-year-old Anna. She was covered in blood from head to toe, having been attacked with some sort of blunt object. And just around the corner, police found what that object was. >> I'm not too sure about that. >> I think we have some [snorts] >> Yeah, it looks like blood. >> [snorts] >> that freaking table is on fire. Yeah. >> [snorts] >> That's partially burnt. >> Yeah, a hole underneath that table's been burnt. >> Yeah, maybe try to push down. >> Try to set the place on fire. Maybe >> those look like footprints, too. Always from here, >> right? more. >> This one's kind of looking like that square pattern. Same there. >> Whoever had killed Anna appeared to have lured her up here, taken her life, and then set the rug around her a flame in an attempt to get rid of the evidence. For a community this small and safe, the sight was rattling for the local police. But even more so was the realization that they might not be alone. As they tried to comprehend the scene in front of them, a noise rang out from one of the rooms. >> Michael, was that you that made noise? >> What's that? >> Did you do anything that would have made noise? The realization that the killer was likely nearby, considering the car he arrived in was abandoned on the road, is heavy in officer's minds. As they recheck room by room, they suspect the killer is among them somewhere. They just have no idea how close. And in the meantime, they have another problem on their hands. Anna is from Rifle, nearly 3 hours and a mountain range away. At the time, she was struggling with substance use disorder brought on by a rough upbringing. By 17, she had her first child. And by 22, she was the sole parent of three kids who adored her. Wanting better for herself, she was planning to travel to Mexico to live with her mother where she could recover and spend time with her kids. But that chance was taken away from her. The question is, by whom? Desperate for answers, police go to the nearby lodge where word has already spread like wildfire about the discovery they've made, and very quickly they get a lead on where their killer might be. The bartender tells them about his drive to work on March 7th, 2021 when he spotted something that left him speechless. A >> few miles up the road, we seen the Mexican kid walking up the road and you could tell he's kind of out of place. And we pulled up to see if that was his car, if he needed jump or like needed help or whatever. And when I asked him, I was like, "Is that your car down there?" And he's like, "No, no, no, that's not my car." And then uh he's like, "Where are we at?" Like I was like, "Do you need help?" Like it was it was just super strange. And then I was like, "Are you sure that's not your car?" And he's like, "Yeah, that is my car." Uh I I came up here and I got jumped by some people and they took my keys and I don't know where I'm at. And I was like, "Well, we're we're heading up here to the lodge. We could give you a ride to the lodge and you could use their phone." And uh you could tell he was like, "There's a lodge. There's a lodge." And that kind of shocked him. And then uh I had I had to get up to come to work. And so Ro, me and Roger just came up and Roger had told the kid that, "Well, I can give you a ride back down to the highway if you need." >> Yeah. >> And then uh so yeah, we came up and then I guess Roger on my mom and Roger came and ate lunch here. He picked up my mom and then on the way back down uh they picked him up and gave him a ride to the highway. >> Unable to stop because of work, the man called his parents who actually responded to try and give the mysterious man a lift. 100% remember without a shadow of a doubt. We picked up that crazy kid in the back of the truck. >> Okay. >> And he was crazy. He was walking in the middle of the road and he I mean I guess that doesn't make him crazy, but he was it was the way he was acting and when he turned around and he just he he just it was I don't know if it was just a gut feeling. I don't know. That's why I'm like I don't know. But he was crazy. But he was very lost and didn't know where he was at. >> Then we to went down to the highway. He jumped out and came to my side of the door. And I said, "Well, so what are you going to do?" And he goes, "Oh, no. I guess go to Grand Junction." And we go, "Well, Grand Junction's that way." And the weird thing is is that I stopped when we let him out. I looked back and I was watching him. And I said, "Roger, he acts like he's going back up the alpine." We didn't see that because we came here, >> but it was strange. >> Both the woman and her husband give the same account. They gave the man a lift to town, but he seemed disoriented and told them several stories about how he ended up here. In some, he stated he was jumped and abandoned. In others, he said he had come up to the mountains on purpose. By this point, police know that they need to try to get an ID. Fortunately, the killer has helped them with that. In the cabin and in the vehicle, police located receipts from Walmart and a McDonald's [music] in the days leading up to the murder. And those receipts led them to a known criminal named Jorge Ciss. Police need to know the connection between Anna and Jorge. And unfortunately, [music] when they speak to one of Anna's friends, the danger of that connection becomes clear. >> Tell me about this guy who who's he's a friend of hers or >> I really really don't know him. Um [music] I just know that he's bad news. Like that's what I've been hearing from everybody >> cuz we were told I mean they're together looking happy. So >> um he's supposedly this is what I've been hearing cuz I've been asking everybody around you know I was like hey who's Jorge? Hey who's Jorge. >> Now why are you asking about Jorge? >> Just because like I because Jennese she was like well he's bad news. And so like I figured cuz he's from Rifola and so I asked like all my friends I was like hey do you know who this guy is? They're like he's not a good person. >> So everybody has their opinion on >> Yeah. Everybody like and you know like it takes like two sides to like not like a person. >> How do you know him? >> I I don't I've just heard of him. I don't know him personally. Like I I' I've seen him with her but I don't know him on like a personal level. >> Like I just know his face. I know all his neck tattoos. I know his name. And that's that's it. Police returned to the witnesses who gave him a ride down to the highway armed with a photo of Jorge Ciss, hoping that finally they might be able to get an idea of who exactly they're looking for. What's this one here? [snorts] How confident are you are this person you saw? >> Pretty sure. >> Pretty sure a scale of one to 100, what would you say? At >> least 80%. With that, police are on the hunt for Jorge and Abolo is put out because not only is Jorge wanted for this crime, but for ones in the past as well. Known for selling a different kind of ice than the isolated skiing community is used to, Jorge lived in rifle near Anna and had been arrested on drug offenses in the past, many of which he actually had warrants for at the time. And though he's a man with warrants, evidently Jorge didn't get the memo that you're supposed to lay low. Because not long after the bolo was put out across Colorado, police got a call from a local community stating that there was a man matching his description acting strange. And if you enjoy killers like this, realize they're not winning an Oscar. Okay. >> What's your name, man? >> What are you doing up here? >> I'm looking for my phone. >> Okay. What's your name? >> J. >> Can you put the rocks down for me? What was your name again? >> I couldn't didn't hear you. Sorry. >> J. How do you spell that? J. >> J A Y. >> What's your last name? I don't think. >> Okay. So, we've had a few calls about you this morning. >> Yeah. People have seen you on their property in the neighborhood. >> Hanging out doing weird stuff. So, >> what kind of weird stuff? >> I don't know. Hanging out by their property in the neighborhood. Just put your hands back here. Okay. >> You're not under arrest right now. I'm just going to check you for weapons. Okay. >> [snorts] >> Can you step apart for me? >> All right, man. So, you're under arrest. You got warrants. I'm sure you hear that. >> Oh, there's a few of them. We'll explain and take them out of my car. >> What? Can you grab his bag? In Jorge's bag, police found mountains of evidence connecting him to the cabin, including items stolen from the basement near where Anna's body was found. The items were IDed by the cabin owner, which told police what they already knew. Jorge was behind Anna's murder. But why? They set him down for an interrogation, hoping for answers. What they got instead is something that may haunt them for years to come. Starting with Jorge's behavior before the interrogation even begins. Okay. Always good. Yes, sir. Don't worry about me, man. I'll be good. Okay, cool. >> Not going to scare me, man. >> Keep staring at me, bro. >> I'm just keeping an eye on you. Make sure you're okay. [ __ ] I'm gonna get a handcuff room and [ __ ] like do >> just want to make sure you're okay. So, I'm good though. >> Just trying to see my name. >> Yeah, I was trying to see your name though. >> Okay, that's fine. >> What's your name? >> Sit down. Sit down right now. >> Sit down. and tell you again. >> Listen up. >> Why are you so worried about who I am? >> I'm not see your name. It's fair. Finally, the officer supervising Jorge is relieved of his duty and detectives come in to question him, hoping they aren't met with the same hostility. So, Jorge, I'm Brook Spennet. I'm with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. This is Colorado also with the Colorado investigation. Can I have you sit in that seat, please, sir? So, I understand you've had a rough week, Jorge. It's >> all right. >> It's okay, huh? Well, Jorge, what uh what we're here for is we want to talk to you. Um we know you're good friends with Anna Rone, >> so we want to talk to you about your activities with her recently um going back up to Montro and Gunnison time. But before we talk to you about that at all, um you are in custody. That's not a secret. So, I have to read you your rights. Okay. >> Detectives read him his rights and try to get down to business. But with Jorge, business isn't exactly his forte. Because, as you're about to see, the lights are on, but no one is home. >> You want to talk to me about Anna? >> Not really. >> Well, I don't know what happened. >> You'll know what happened. What? >> Well, what about you? We want to talk about her. >> Well, Anna's dead >> and you're good friends with her, >> so that's what we want to talk about. But before we can talk, I need to know if you want to wave your rights and talk about Anna and her death or not. >> What happened? >> We don't know. That's what we're hoping you can help us out with. >> How would I know? >> Well, because you were with her the night before. >> Oh, yeah. But I got dropped off in junction. >> Okay. So, are you telling me you want to talk then? You're good talking for a little while. You can you can stop at any time. So you got dropped off in junction. >> So I are Are you saying you want to talk or No, >> we're just trying to find out what happened to her, man. >> I don't know what happened, but >> Okay. >> My condolences. But >> yeah, because we heard that she was kind of your home girl. She referred to you as her homeboy. I barely met her like like two three months ago, you know. Listen, we're only that close. >> Okay. >> You know, she's cool, but I say >> how' you guys meet? >> She's mad, you know. >> Okay. So, you still haven't answered my question. Do do you want to talk? You You're kind of going back and forth. Do you want to talk or No. What would you rather do? This is an opportunity for you to >> H. Say that. I'm sorry I interrupted. You say that again. >> No. Hold on. >> We're just We're just trying to figure out what happened. >> So, what am I arrested for, though? >> Right now, you're arrested for a couple different things. One of them for homicide. >> Homicide. Yeah. >> Yeah. So obviously that's what we want to talk to you about. That's what I told you. We want to talk to you about the death of Anna Rone. >> Okay. >> So do you want to talk to us and tell us what happened >> when you last saw her? All that good stuff. >> I mean [ __ ] What is there to talk about? >> Only you know. You were the one with her the last, not us. >> I don't know much talk about her. No. >> Okay. Now, you said you were dropped off in Grand Junction. Where was that from? Or do you know where you were picked up from? How much have you been using today, Jorge? I smoked at all today. >> Not at all today. When's the last time you smoked? >> [ __ ] Yesterday. >> Okay. >> No. That's all we want, man. It's truth. >> Police believe that Jorge is under the influence. Given the substances they found in his possession, including again, not the Rocky Mountain kind, the Breaking Bad kind. >> So, right now, we know you're the last person with her, right? Okay. [clears throat] There's only one person who can tell us how that went down >> and you're it. >> Not really. >> What do you mean not really? >> What do you mean? There's somebody else that can tell us how it went down. >> No. >> Okay. Just you and her can tell us how it went down, right? >> I don't know. [snorts] >> Okay. I'm not going to sit here and go in circles with you, but right now you're arrested for homicide. >> Okay? >> I'm giving you an opportunity to tell us she was a friend of yours. Pretty good friend cuz you guys were in Montro together at that guy's house if you remember that. You remember going there where she picked up the makeup case? And you guys were all hanging around inside. Okay. So that's how we know you are the last on her. >> Okay. >> Okay. So that's why we're trying to figure out what happened after that. >> I don't even know what happened to be honest with you. I mean >> you just you just can't remember it. >> I really can't. >> Okay. >> Were you guys pretty spun that night? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Yeah. Okay. So, which direction did you start driving when you left Montrose? Do you remember? >> I was driving. >> I know you weren't driving. I said, did you guys start driving? >> I don't know. >> Don't know. Okay. You remember getting the car stuck? >> Not me. >> She did, though. >> Yeah, she did. >> Okay. So, I I got to know, did it get stuck or did you just not have enough traction going up the hill? >> No, you don't know. >> I don't know. >> Okay. Was it still dark then or was it daylight? >> Little bit daylight going on. Okay. And then this is just my guess. Tell me if I'm wrong, but you guys kind of found the first house that that you came across. That sound about right? >> Well, you planned it. >> No, I didn't I didn't plan it. I'm [clears throat] I'm asking you. So, you guys get your car stuck. We know you made it into a house up there. Is that just the first house that you you came across? I'm not after you for the Man, that doesn't concern me. Okay. Okay. So, the house that you found, let me ask you this. Did you guys have to force your way in or did was there a door open? or what are you doing, man? Do you guys have to force your way in that house or was the door open? Do you remember? You don't remember or you don't want to tell me which one. And if you don't want to tell me, that's okay. We'll move on. >> Move on. >> Okay. So, what happened inside the house then? We know nobody was home. It was a nice house. Do you guys find some food or something? How How long did you hang there? >> I don't know. >> You don't remember? Okay. Do you remember what the inside of the house looked like at all? >> Nope. >> Okay. You used to remember being there? >> Nope. I tell you I don't know what happened. >> Okay. >> But it happened. >> Okay. So, you remember being at the car when it was stuck? You just don't remember what happened in the house? Okay. I think you do a little bit. So, let's um >> Not really. >> Yeah. But there you go. You say not really. You kind of remember a little bit. Something obviously happened because you and her you and her were tight. You guys are buds. According to everybody we've talked to, you guys are pretty tight. >> I guess you were. >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, you make your way to this house. What happened once you got in there, man? >> I already answered. >> Now, you said not really. So, you you kind of remember something. >> No, I already answer the question. You trying to like repeat in different >> Okay. >> Word format and [ __ ] >> But you said not really. So you remember some, but do you remember being at the house? I mean, you're not. And so is that correct or no? >> Do you remember being at the house, Jorge? >> I already answered that question, right? >> No. Yeah, I have. >> So you're at the car. You guys take a walk. You've agreed to that part. I talked about the house and then you said I don't remember not really what happened there. So you remember being at the house. Is that correct? I don't want to sit here and waste your time or my time. Okay. >> Only one person can help us out with what happened in that house right now. You're facing a charge of homicide, which means you willfully killed somebody. Okay? Hey, I'm not going to play games with you. Only you can tell us if there was a reason why that happened other than you just chose to kill somebody. So, you can tell us what happened inside that house, man. To make us understand who understand you. >> Us. Yeah. What led to Anna's death? just happened. >> Okay, I get that. But something had to have triggered it. >> I don't know what triggered it. >> You guys Were you just hanging out in there eating some food or something or and all of a sudden it just happened? >> I don't know what triggered it. >> It just It just went down. >> Okay. >> Yeah. Did you guys start arguing about anything? How good a friend you were or what you're going to do to get the car unstuck? Any of that stuff? >> Not really. >> None of that stuff happened. >> Okay. >> Jorge's confession isn't exactly an in-depth one, but it's something. And the police have the shovel they need to dig for more [music] now. But what they find is far from what they ever expected. >> So, you get into the house. What's What's going on in there, man? When uh when things go wrong, cuz like we said, everybody says you guys are good friends, >> you're pretty tight, huh? >> Yeah, but there's something I mean, did you guys get into because you don't want it just to be left at it happened. Okay. Did you guys get into a fight? Did she uh start calling you names? Uh did were you disagreeing over the Carl? What was going on? >> I think something something something happened and we led to another [ __ ] and and Yeah. >> Okay. So, what was that something? Do you know? >> I don't know. >> And then it just led to the [ __ ] going down. Huh? >> Okay. >> Do you remember was she was she coming at you verbally, you know, getting ugly with you? You guys have a verbal fight or >> I don't remember [ __ ] Something something triggered it. >> Okay. >> Something. >> Do you remember what what you did? >> Yeah, but I don't want to answer it. >> Okay. >> So, we can move on with that. >> Okay. >> Anna's death had not been a swift one. Evidence at the scene proved that she had tried [music] to defend herself. The level of violence pointed to an altercation leading up to the fatal attack, but will police be able to find out where it all began? >> So, what went what went wrong, man? >> What'd you guys start fighting about? >> I don't know. >> You mean you you got to remember, man. You remembered everything else. >> Yeah, I did. So, do you remember and you just don't want to tell me? >> I've been I've been asking it like >> I know you have. Yeah. >> So, do do you know what happened and you just don't want to tell me? >> I mean, do you know what happened? Like you got you do you know like what happened? >> No. >> I felt like it was a setup and [ __ ] >> Talk me through that, man. Why did you feel like it was a setup? >> Cuz that's how it is in this world, you know. >> Yeah, I I get that. That happens. >> That's like [ __ ] >> Like what sometimes people get set up. I get it. I understand it. But you picked the house that you were walking to. >> I feel like that's what we got through too long. >> What do you mean? But >> people sacrifice, right? >> Okay. You're not saying Anna was sacrificed? No. >> That could have been me. What could have been you? >> Sacrificed. >> Well, you think you could have been the one that was that was killed? >> No. Yeah. >> Okay. Well, why do you think you would have been the one that was cut? >> That I was I'll see. >> Walk me through that, man. What were you thinking? >> I like, you know. >> Yeah. >> You thought that was the end for you? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Well, what were you what were you guys talking about or what were you seeing that that led to you to believe that? >> What were you guys talking about that led you to believe that it was come that it was going down? >> That's on. >> So, you just don't want to tell me. >> You said we can move on. That's that, right? >> Okay, we can move on. >> Jorge's bizarre story of sacrifice, being set up, and being surveiled all seem to stem from his addiction. In a state of psychosis, did he attack Anna, or is it something more sinister? Was the trip up to the mountains all a ploy so he could find an empty house where he planned to do this all along? But what you've done is you've talked about everything except what happened that resulted in Anna's death. And you were the only one that can tell us, can justify to us why she's dead. You're it. And you're you're you're dancing around it. You say that you thought you were being set up, that you thought you were going to be the one dead. >> Mhm. >> Okay. >> I I get all that, but you're not explaining to me why. >> That's why. >> No. Why did you think you were going to be the one dead? >> Why? >> Yeah. >> I don't know. >> What What was going on that you thought you were going to die? >> Cuz you guys be watching me where I do. You know, you know what I do. >> I do. I know what you do. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. But what happened at that time that made you think you were gonna die while you were in that house? >> Why? Because some people pulled up to me be like, "You got to go." >> People pulled up to the house >> to me and told me that I got to go. I'm like, "You got to go for what?" >> Okay. And when did that happen? >> Hurry. Focus, man. >> I am focusing. >> When did that happen? after >> somebody said you got to go. >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, that made you think that that things were going to go bad for you? >> Hell yeah. >> Okay. So, why was Anna on the receiving end of that then? What did she do to you? Was she in on it? >> I don't know. I was >> So, you're in the house and you're you think you're about to get set up and Yeah. >> Okay. And so Anna, you did you think Anna was part of the plan to set you up? >> Okay. And then so she had to go. >> That does that sound right that it was going to be her or you? >> Yeah. >> With that and all the evidence, the police have what they need. Jorge took a plea deal and ultimately at just 24 years old was sentenced to 42 years behind bars. The senseless murder has left Anna's beloved family with more questions than answers. She had been on the path to repairing her life, to raising her kids, and to becoming the mother she always dreamed of being. Instead, [music] that chance was taken from her and for what.
