Vernig pleaded guilty to two felonies and was awaiting sentencing, leaving both defendants facing serious consequences from the encounter. October 4th, 2024, authorities responding to a shoplifting call at a Target in Camaro encountered a suspect accused of ramming a sheriff's patrol vehicle before fleeing in a bright yellow Ford Mustang. The driver then launched into a nearly hour-long escape attempt across Los Angeles freeways and surface streets during Friday rush hour. >> At least for the next couple of miles. But once air traffic becomes a concern and the marine layer uh becomes an obstacle, uh things could change here. But I have a feeling we may see him attempt to exit the freeway a little bit sooner. Uh but there's still marine layer issues uh you know across West LA right now from Englewood all the way north into Santa Monica. The entire west side is rapidly uh fogging up now. So you can see I'm using that right shoulder slowing down a little bit at least just trying to get around all of this rush hour. Yeah. Thankfully, the marine layer is uh is is is holding. It's holding steady. So, if he continues southbound, and we're going to continue with him here, it looks like we've gotten clearance to creep up here on LAX. Uh looks like he's going to continue southbound down Airport Boulevard, and that'll eventually uh take him towards the airport. will have to make a decision. Either go left or right north of the airport. >> [snorts] >> Yeah, now this is this is heart stopping here going through this uh parking lot here with units in tow here as he does a circle around the shopping plaza now coming back on Lennox Boulevard to answer your question. That was a close call right there. Really close call. Inches away from colliding with that car. that motor unit again keeping up with him as he continues up North Hawthorne Boulevard. To answer your question really quick, I could tell you that we don't know whether he has randomly ended up in this neighborhood, but law enforcement does know. I understand that they do have an accurate plate and uh registration for this vehicle. They believe they know where this suspect resides. At least that's the information that they're operating with. So, they do have the luxury of knowing where the suspect lives. We will see uh how that affects. They're not going to let him go by any means, but as long as they can keep an eye on him and they have the tools at their disposal above him, uh then those helicopters could easily take this over if the watch commander or the supervisor makes the decision to lay off a little bit and give him an opportunity to slow down. Now he's getting off the freeway here, getting off of the 105 freeway. I'm sorry, 10 110 freeway, excuse me. Getting off of the 110 freeway. Uh heavy traffic at this red light here. Look at that cruiser. Look at that cruiser keeping up with him. Going right through traffic, splitting lanes with him as he comes up on Roondo Beach Boulevard. Going he Yeah, right in Roondo Beach Boulevard and he might get right back on the freeway. Just using that exit ramp to get off. Looks like that left rear tire is having real trouble. So at some point at some point somebody either made contact with that tire. I certainly have not observed any spike strips. I didn't see any chance of that. So, at some point he did collide with something that is now eating up that rubber. And now that left rear tire is on borrow time. That may be the beginning of the end of this pursuit, guys. He is now southbound on the 110 freeway with a very unstable left rear wheel. Break in place. But now he's getting off the 110 freeway. Getting onto I think the 90 91 transition here. That's right. Yeah. Unfortunately, he just took the westbound 91 freeway. I say that because that's where eventually as we continue west that marine layer is going to come into play once again here unfortunately. So, uh this is this chase has had uh all the elements. Let's I mean Okay, so he's got right suspect out of the vehicle. Driver side door open. Driver side door open. Suspect out of the vehicle. We're going to come around this tree here. He is stepping away from the vehicle now. Coming around the back of the vehicle behind the Mustang. CHP in position to take that suspect into custody. He will quickly be placed into handcuffs and it looks like they're rushing to some either rushing to clear the remainder of the vehicle unless somebody else went running. We're going to come around this tree here to see if we could see what's going on here. Uh but right now they are in the process of clearing that vehicle. I don't know if anybody else was uh getting out that looks like that passenger door is shut. So, I believe just judging from what we've been able to witness here, it's just the driver uh that is uh is uh involved. He is being taken into custody. They have cleared the vehicle. Code four. And wow, what uh what a sudden end to this. Oh, no. Somebody else is in custody. Somebody else. A passenger is out of the vehicle and in handcuffs. CHP placing two people under arrest. The Mustang eventually stopped on the 91 freeway in Gardina where the driver and a passenger were taken into custody. The driver was wanted in connection with shoplifting and an alleged assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer with additional fleeing and reckless driving charges expected from the pursuit. August 20th, 2020, Bayside police attempted to stop a Toyota Camry on Brown Deere Road near Interstate 43. The driver later identified as Jason continued southbound instead of stopping, reaching roughly 70 mph as officers worked to get tire deflation devices into position. >> It's not yet >> 202. I'm with him. It's uh going to be a beige colored sedan. >> Looks appears to be a Lexus. Still not stopping. Traffic is medium. Speed 68 miles an hour. 202 for the stop. It's um blue red lights 23. Excuse me. Washington 42. Dispatch, can we get stops by Glendel or assistance from Walk County Sheriff 7:30 202 dispatch, it is a male white driver. He's looking over at me. He seems surprised.
