welcome to behind the badge an inside look at the men and women of the San Antonio Police Department well we're in the midst of another hot San Antonio summer a few episodes back we gave you our top 10 tips to keep your family safe for the summer we hope they helped you stay safe and sound since school will be back in session in no time at all this month we're giving you our top 10 back to school safety tips some of our Traffic Safety experts will come on to talk about those tips some are traffic related and some are not but all are valuable we'll also hear from our sapd recruiters they're here to talk about some upcoming recruitment Events first up though we'll talk about the Lone Star fugitive task force and how this dedicated group of officers keeps our streets safe from some of the most dangerous criminals around we have a lot to talk about so join us right after this short break [Music] and welcome back as I mentioned at the top of the show after a recent high-profile arrest arrest of a capital murder suspect Facebook fan Mrs Sher Dickinson Williams contacted us on Facebook and asked been recently following sapd on Facebook what is the Lone Star fugitive task force is that something you were in Mrs Williams we're glad you asked yes the sapd is indeed part of it and today's first guests are here to tell us more about it please welcome to the show United States Marshall Robert alonte and Deputy US Marshall Chris Boseman gentlemen welcome to behind the bed thank you for having us here thank you good good deal well as as the uh the viewer there mentioned to us she was interested in in The lonar Fugitive task force and our affiliation with it so so Marshall can you tell us a little bit about that yeah absolutely The lonar Fugitive task force actually was established in 2005 and the uh uh task force consists of many different uh agencies throughout the San Antonio Bear County area uh including the San Antonio Police Department the purpose of the task force is to go after the most violent offenders that are that are wanted to have outstanding warrants so uh we consider these people to be the worst of the worst and uh basically the task force is a is a force multiplier and by these different agencies participating in the task force uh we're able to and and also having the United States Marshall service being the lead agency we're able to look for these uh wanted fugitives even if they leave uh San Antonio they leave the state or even if they leave the country many successful cases so it just truly is a great uh program so everybody with in to to hear you say it I guess the the everybody within the program benefits because they've got access to everyone else's resources yeah absolutely and and and if I may I can go ahead and list the the the different agencies that do participate in the program starting with of course with the San Antonio Police Department the new bronville police department the San Antonio Independent School District Police Department the Bear County Sheriff's Office the coal County Sheriff's Office the Bear County Fire Marshal's Office the Texas Office of the Attorney General the Texas Department of Public Safety the te Texas Department of Criminal Justice Office of the Inspector General and Immigration and Customs Enforcement office of detention or removal and as well as the uh United States Marshall service you can see there several different law enforcement agencies it's quite a list um so I know that the Lone Star fugitive task force is just one of several that you oversee correct as that is correct uh I'm the Marshall uh for the Western District of Texas and San Antonio is is a district office but we also have seven other offices which include Austin wo Del Rio Alpine Beck Midland and Al Paso in each of those offices or cities uh we have a task force and they're also called The Lone Star fugitive task force but they're very similar to the one that's here in San Antonio okay and so if if you get uh I would imagine some of those other uh task forces also have a laundry list just like that one if not longer on some of them of agencies working together I guess if you get a couple of these task forces in turn working together that's just an an unimaginable amount of resources being put together well absolutely and and in fact that does occur from time to time where uh let's say the task force in El Paso is looking for a uh a person wanted for murder out of El Paso and they develop information that that person has fled El Paso and may be in San Antonio well then what happens next is the task force in El Paso sends what we call a collateral lead to the task force here in San Antonio and uh and that happens uh uh very very often uh not just in the within the district but within the state and throughout the country throughout the world so we're we're constantly looking for these fugitives no matter where they're at and there's nowhere they can go to get away from you really no it's not a matter of if we're going to find you it's just a matter of when okay and so this this one particular uh case that this capital murder suspect that uh that the the viewer wrote in about can you tell us about that one yeah absolutely and and and uh a very tragic case where this uh uh person uh delivering pizza pizza delivery man and he has his part uh excuse me his car parked and uh the subject by name of Robert delid uh takes his car steals his car and the victim trying to prevent his car from being stolen tried to stop him and unfortunately got run over and and later died uh but this case actually began with some outstanding police work by the San Antonio Police Department starting with the homicide unit the crime scene unit so in order for us to to look for somebody we have to know who they are the San Antonio Police Department told us who that person was they identified the perpetrator as Robert delid and that started the task force in motion this incident occurred on July the 2nd and on July the 6th he was placed under arrest excellent so you mentioned that it started out with the sapd but then it it branched out to the to the task force and that's where you guys took over uh Deputy Boseman you know you were mentioning to me before that uh you know it's as as one of the boots on the on the ground out there is is you're actually in the task force and some of our pios got to go right along with you um yall mentioned that that pretty much that what makes this thing tick is that everybody on the team brings something unique to the table is that correct that's very true uh whenever you have different law enforcement agencies that all come together under one unit with a main purpose um that's what you have when you when you're talking about the Lone Star fugative task force um as far as the ride alongs that took place uh all of the members from these different agencies they come with different experiences different abilities also different knowledge okay and our main focus is to go out there and to locate and Rend these fugitives who had active warrants for their arrest okay and during this right along program uh we did have two individuals who were arrested one individual had a warrant out of adosa County for capital murder and the other individual had a warrant that was sought after by the San Antonio Police Department for possession with the intent to distribute narcotics as well as sexual assault and in both of these situations all of the law enforcement agencies came together all the law enforcement officers participated and affected these arrests okay well so and I know that you guys what makes you guys uh tick too what what's what's very important is that uh you rely on tips to come in quite often can you give us the numbers that somebody would call that's got information on a fugitive definitely U we do encourage the public to contact us any particular time they may have any information that can lead to an arrest of a fugitive and they can call us 7 days a week and the phone number is Erico 2110 65785 or we have a program called text a tip where the keyword is Lone Star and that number is 847411 great well we we hope that people feel comfortable using that and uh you know getting getting that information out to you guys and to us and leading to the arrest of more bad guys which is what we're all in this business to do so we appreciate you allowing us to be a part of it we appreciate you coming out to the show today definitely thank you our pleasure to be here thank you very much great thank you sir here at the sapd we pride ourselves in keeping criminals off our streets and preserving the way of life our citizens are entitled to thanks to our partners in the Lone Star fugitive task force we'll keep on doing so for many years to come next up officer Misty Floyd will be giving us some valuable back to school safety tips now don't go anywhere cuz we'll be right [Music] back we were on our way to the park and Dad decided it was still safe not to use the crosswalk I was wrong my son and I paid for it with our lives crosswalks are there to help protect us always cross at a marked crosswalk or an intersection with a signal walk safe San [Music] Antonio welcome back as we all know August brings out back to school sales and the end of summer vacations we all try to get in gear with our new routine for the upcoming school year the first priority on all of our lists should always be safety here today are two special guests from our Traffic Division who will be helping me get the word out about some valuable back toschool safety tips please welcome Sergeant Tanya Brandt and officer Brent Smith to the show Welcome hi Misty thank you for having us thank you you well we really thought that this was a great opportunity for us to put these tips out there for our viewers because school is just right around the corner yes surprisingly the summer has just blown by so it always does oh I know well we'll start with um tip one we're going to start with the school zones in effect can you guys tell us a little bit and remind our viewers about the school zones well we're out of practice obviously as summer's coming to a close we we've had a little bit of a break from it but school zones will be in effect soon and just a reminder for folks uh no cell phones in in your school zones probably good idea not to text either nothing that's going to distract you while you're in that school zone never take for granted that a child is going to follow the rules always assume that the child is going to be distracted and may unintentionally jump out in front of that bus so always stop when you see the the lights flashing on the bus and when that stop sign comes out and also remember and sometimes we tend to forget this that depending on which direction of travel you're going you have to stop on the other side of the street as well that is a great point because that's actually number two would be stopping um when buses stopping when buses stop yes and so a lot of people think that if you're behind the bus then obligated to stop but you actually commit an offense if you're traveling in the opposite direction and you fail to stop yes when you see that bus stop no matter which direction you're traveling you must stop and wait for that bus to clear for that stop sign to to come back in and those children are then safe absolutely and number three we'll talk about bullying um officer Smith did you want to talk a little bit about that well with school starting especially with social media there's a lot of bullying going on schools are trying to educate the children on what to do if they're bullied but also too as parents you want to make sure that your that your child is not bullying other students point so we might want to make sure just kind of keep an eye on them um see if there's any triggers maybe they may be a little aggressive or if the school is contacting you just keep in mind that U you know kids do Bully and just be on the lookout to make sure your kids's not doing it that's an awesome point because a lot of times we just think about um our children making sure they're not bullied but what if they are the aggressor and how we can take steps to prevent that from happening as well so that is a really great point that brings us to the number four tip which is school violence so the whole idea if if you see something say something would you say that's pretty accurate absolutely and very important report any rumors even though you think it may be trivial there may be nothing to it maybe it's a friend of mine they would never say or do anything like that there could still be something behind that please report it to your school administrators to your school police to your parents say something to a friend but get the word out that you've heard something that's suspicious or concerning we want to avoid harm in our schools at any cost so please report any instances of rumored School violence absolutely most most students don't realize that their peers are going to commit violence oh like Sergeant brand said they would never do that you want to you want to stop it for sure so you just never know when um if that threat is an empty threat or if it's something that they actually are going to fulfill and it's better to just um immediately take action so that it it very well may not be an empty thread yes and we don't want to risk the lives of our children no not at all they're too precious absolutely so that leaves me with um number five the latch key kid u i was a latchkey kid you know and there were certain rules that my parents U made sure that we knew that while they weren't home we weren't to open the door you're not going outside you know we had our little routine can um Brent can you give us a few tips on being a watchy kid well you definitely want to know your address and also want to know your memorize the actual emergency contact numbers your parents number 911 memorize those versus what we do a lot nowadays is hit the just Auto you know the the favorites button faor button correct because you know if somebody's trying to come in or knocking on the door and you get panicked M kids ought to at least know you know the actual number itself so memorize those emergency contact numbers and never open the door to strangers no matter what number six is helmet safety some some kids will bite to and from school so just making sure that they keep that helmet on at all times right please wear your helmet and wear it correctly often times you see a a helmet on a child and on adults as well and it's cantered to the back of their head their forehead is exposed and that helmet is doing you no good it's it's it's an ornament at that point it's not a safety feature so please wear your helmet correctly as it was designed to be worn on the top of your head with your chin straps cinched securely underneath your chin buckled and this applies to not just your bicycle but to your your razor to your skateboard any form of conveyance where you are not strapped in please wear your helmet and then also when you're wearing that helmet making sure that another precaution would be using the crosswalks yes follow the rules please cross it at designated crosswalks you're most visible in a crosswalk cars know to be watching out for pedestrians and cyclists in crosswalks so please utilize the crosswalks don't take advantage of Crossing through the middle of the street it may be a shortcut but it could cost your life absolutely number seven is stranger danger as we were just talking about being a latchkey kid in some of those tips um stranger danger um is one of those things that you might see someone in passing and kids are friendly they want to say hi to everyone and that sort of thing so what tips can you give us for um parents at home watching this with young children to just emphasize that there is there are strangers out there I would suggest that children travel in groups go with a group of friends to and from school or to and from the bus stop stay with people you know you want to remind your your kids that a stranger looks like anybody they can look like the nice little old lady down the street they don't have to look like the big scary Gruff stereotype that we're used to to thinking about be mindful that anybody can be a stranger and don't freely discuss any of your plans with with any potential stranger don't say that it's okay I don't need a ride someone's coming to pick me up because now you've just given a clue that you are by yourself and and there is a you you've put yourself at risk so just be mindful of of you know strange people out there and then also officer Smith with um some of the tactics being used uh with the abductions as far as using animals or or candy they're becoming even more resourceful to grab the attention of our children so wouldn't you say that those type of things are are in particular in particularly important that we talk to our kids about that just because they come up to you with a fuzzy little animal and you know they want to pet it to be mindful that you know it might be a tactic exactly right it is a tactic it's to gain the trust of a child you know kid you know about the pet everybody loves pets they lower their lower the kids will lower their guard and that's when that Predator is going to come in and um you know do some potential harm absolutely so at number eight we're going to talk about um not only are we as adults responsible for securing our own um personal items but also teaching our kids to secure their backpacks to secure their school supplies and that sort of thing what tips do you guys have on that be mindful of what you put in your backpack in the first place don't take your expensive Electronics don't take your iPad or your iPod or or things that are potentially enticing to to a thief but always be mindful of where you set your back keep keep it on you or right next to you hold on tight to it put your name on it make sure it's clearly clearly visible just as you would do with your luggage for example if you were traveling at the airport make sure it's clearly identifiable as yours and know where it is at all times M and now with us um dealing with a lot of these go across all age groups but one major milestone for high schoolers is getting that first car so that would be our tip number nine tips that we can give our audience for getting their first vehicle and parents of children that get their first vehicle what are some things that they really need to be mindful about with that first vehicle right now distracted driving is the Hot Topic kids texting driving I mean adults as well sure but with the generation of young young kids they're texting a lot so um they cannot be texting and driving uh they definitely need to be wearing their seat belt seat belt saves lives period um we talk about road rage here recently in the me in the news for the last few weeks we've had some road rage incidents if somebody tries to provoke them just stay cool M just ignore them take a different route if they have to but don't um but don't get don't don't engage with somebody who's having road rage and also watch the racing you T to get your first car you want to have a little fun see what the see what the horsepower is in that car but it's not worth it number 10 tip would be uh we recently had a an intern within our office uh Kristen Zachariah who was amazing and she went away to college just recently moved out there and so she's preparing for her freshman year and that leaves us with number 10 the parents of college students um just making sure that we are leaving that line of communication open to our kids um with binge drinking and the pressure to have sex and the whole um the pressures with the driving situation can y'all touch a little bit on that Brent do you have anything that you can add to that there's also safety and numbers as well as the college campus as well M so um they're going to be in a transition of being away from the parents and hopefully that with some guidance over the years that they'll make good informed decisions once they get to college and it definitely it it really starts at home it does it certainly does keep the lines of communication open have a relationship with your child children have a relationship with your parents that you feel comfortable talking about these issues both ways well these tips were great and I'm so glad that you guys were able to come on our show today to get this information out I'd love to have you back on future we' love to thank you very much thank you let's all keep these tips in mind as we return to our busy school year routines in a few weeks we all want to get to work and school on time but it's important we all get there in one piece next up officer green is going to be talking to two of our sapd recruiters about career opportunities in the sapd don't go away we'll be right back [Music] [Music] [Music] me amigo [Music] fors magazine just named San Antonio the hottest city in the southwest for young adults interestingly enough several studies have also named the sapd as one of the better police departments in the nation to work in our next two guests sapd recruiters are here to tell us about what makes us one of the top police departments around and what they do to keep the best applicants choosing the Alamo City to start their law enforcement careers Officer Taylor officer holderby thank you for coming to the show thank you offby I would like to start with you tell us a little bit about why you chose this career and why sapd sure um I initially when I first got out of the military at 22 I wanted to be a police officer but I never pursued that career um I was going to college at UTSA I had the opportunity to do an internship with sanan police department and absolutely fell in love with with sapd so at 37 I applied for the San police department and made it through the academy at graduated 37 years old so now I've been on 7 years okay now right now there's two female recruiters uh you and officer Pia uh that any of our our female listeners right now are watching the show uh can can call and talk to you guys about if they're thinking about this career opportunity but could you tell us what why is it so important for women to be involved in policing I think women have a uh really good negotiating um reasoning skills as far as de-escalating um a situation so I think women are are good with that uh we need a good representation of the department the city of San Antonio's population is 50% women so we like to have that representation on sapd as well sometime people uh may ask you know why are we targeting certain segments of the population but it's because we want that diversity exactly we want a diversity within the San Anton Police Department because that's city of San Antonio we have diversity so we'd like to have that representation on our department a well-rounded Police Department for the city of San Antonio to represent the city of San Antonio okay awesome now also Taylor you know there are there are many opportunities for officers to get involved and when they when they come on a police department there's so many different avenues that you can get involved in such as the recruiting team so tell us about some of those opportunities that you can get involved in and why did you choose to be a recruiter yourself well of course when you first break out you're a patrolman you're going to be out the street being called what we call the Beat cop but you can be an instructor helicopter pilot motorcycle officer um you can be a safe officer dealing with children and neighborhood disputes there just a an array of jobs that you can do on the department you're not just limited to the patrol aspect of it uh the reason I became a recruiter is because I wanted to share the vision of policing with so many other people um a lot of people don't understand or realize how much work goes into being a police officer and so uh I like to tell them about it I'm passionate about it I'm enthusiastic about it and I like to uh portray that uh enthusiasm to them okay you guys are doing a great job because you I know you guys are using several different approaches to going out there and finding uh the next sapd officer so Lee can you tell me roughly are some of the approaches that y are using to to reach out to the community sure we well of course we have our website uh ww. sapd cage.com that website has all the information anybody needs to get on how to apply for uh the sanary police department uh from frequently asked questions the uh minimum requirements the benefits that we have um and it has all the recruiters on that page as well as well as phone numbers contact numbers so somebody wants to contact us our phone numbers are directly on there and then we also have our Facebook page which we're trying to really get out there and promote as all the events are on that page as well so we use those two now now yall also do um yall go abroad not just locally yall do events but you also go abroad also Taylor tell us about some of the events that yall do throughout the year well we've had women in policing we've got a public safety day we've got a African-Americans in public safety we have uh several different events uh that Target uh uh different ethnic groups different minorities different uh genders and so we like to promote uh or try and recruit uh all those ethnicities again San Antonio is a diverse uh City from the Spurs all the way down so we like to uh get as many people as we can interested in law enforcement to reflect that diversity and we have a lot of military here in San Anon yes sir this is military Town USA both myself and officer hold to be happen to be uh uh military former military and also T just speak we were talking about this early but we we are a family here especially here in sapd but overall people will be joining a a huge brother and Sisterhood and so when you're doing these events yes we would like for you to to come with us but this is we do joint events also which is the reason for Public Safety day we have right now confirmed uh 21 uh different agencies uh for the confirmed for our Public Safety day uh we've taken the competition aspect out of it uh you can do policing anywhere you know uh and so we want you to understand that that that that's a possibility for you not just here in San Antonio so by inviting all these agencies here we want you to see the potential not only here but out there abroad also guys thank you so much for joining us here today on the show I hope someone that's uh thinking about becoming a police officer will give you guys a call reach out to the website and uh you know we'll we we'll talk to them about uh you know this this great opportunity so thank you for being here thank Youk you thanks to our two recruiters for helping us get the word out about these latest recruiting efforts for more information about recruiting please check out sapd careers on Facebook [Music] [Music] well that was a lot of info to fit into a 30-minute show if you didn't quite catch something or want to see an episode again find all of our latest episodes at www. facebook.com/ sanantonio PD we thank all of our guests
