Um, and but it does seem that he is kind of circling an area of the West Valley, a pretty wide swath of the West Valley, but it's it's kind of this one particular area like he's not necessarily trying to get anywhere. Uh, he's just trying to get away from police, but he's driving at high speeds and kind of doing big big circles here as he goes again. He's back in Wanekka, Satakoy, and Irondale. Um, he's been in Waneka, Kenoga Park, Woodland Hills. Uh the CHP, as you mentioned, was on this for a time uh after he got on the freeway, was on the 101 freeway for a while. That would have been a far better situation because there'd be no cross. That's a pretty clear shot you're getting of the driver there. The windows appear to be slightly tint. No, maybe not. I don't know if they're tinted. The rear window might might be, but uh the the driving is erratic. Uh there is believed to be a weapon in the car. We don't know if there are other people in the car. Uh but uh the fact that the the the the assumption and the belief uh the suspicion that there is a weapon in the car means they're not going to do a pit maneuver. They don't want an officer to get that close uh and put their lives in danger to actually put a pit maneuver on this vehicle. Uh it's an older model. Looks like a Lexus sedan. Um and it's you know it's got some get up and go. Um, it's a mid2000 Lexus ES300 is what I'm being told by one of our our our directors here. Uh, >> almost losing control. HERE WE GO. SPINNING OUT into the other side of the the Satcoy Street there. Coming out the other side, almost into that power pole and has now lost control. Now head-to-head with these LAPD units. Effectively, what would have happened in a pit maneuver is now what they are dealing with. An armed suspect now face to face with these officers. smoke coming out from under the hood here after he lost control, swerved across the double yellow lines and is now, again, as I mentioned, head-to-head with those officers. You can see the windshield wipers have been activated. The driver now moving around inside the vehicle. Again, this is a driver who is under the influence, believed to be armed, very unpredictable, and has put so many lives in danger. They now have split-second decisions of their own to make as he now hopefully complies with their commands. All right, we will see if he cooperates here. Mark, >> we're seeing two hands now up uh left and right hands both reaching out of the driver's side window. This is an encouraging sign. You can zoom in there. >> Right. He's showing signs of giving up here. As long as they can see his hands, they will have him probably just open up that door very slowly. They will give him very >> use a knife here or something to cut the uh to cut the seat belt. They're gonna try, they're gonna get him out of the car. He may be hurt. That may be what he's been telling them. He may have been injured in the accident. Uh, and they're going to get him out. But you saw this is unusual. I I don't think I've seen this very often where they will actually come out uh on a suspect that they believe is armed with a shield and with a bunch of officers, basically an arrest team to go get him. Uh, and that's that's an unusual thing uh that we're that we're watching here. Yeah. Now, we are hearing that he is stuck to some degree, whether it was just a matter of getting the seat belt undone or or or or whatever the case may be. But we should explain why they are so hesitant to execute a pit maneuver in situations like this. Because ultimately, what a pit maneuver is designed to do is to spin the vehicle in a 180° fashion so that you end up face to face with that suspect and able to take him into custody. If you know he is armed, you don't knowingly want to put yourself in that position. Those officers are then in a much more precarious position if they have a gunman, you know, fa, you know, facing them at the end of the pursuit. Again, not knowing what else is going on inside the vehicle. There are just too many unknowns that they don't want to do. They want to put they don't want to take that risk. But this was essentially what would have happened in a pit maneuver. He ended up spinning out on his own and they were able to uh send that arrest team immediately. >> The driver was taken into custody after the crash with a gun reportedly recovered from the vehicle. The case potentially involved driving under the influence, evading police reckless driving and unlawful firearm possession, although the provided report does not establish the final charges.
