Justice is infected on too. I just is infected on too. The last person was disgusting. Sorry. Uber? I'm not sure if Uber does that or if you want to do that. You know, family friends, you know, obviously that's very limited for you. >> How old is she? >> 10. >> How old is oldest? >> 13. >> Uh my oldest is 16, but she's 13. >> They're in West Boca? Sometimes they'll call the school resource officer, they'll call you, and then if they call you, you can explain to them over the phone, maybe they could drop your child off. >> Is that all the children? >> Yeah. >> Yeah, she'll be home before. >> Yeah. >> Or whoever's picking up the other ones. Yeah, well, she'll be home before then. You sure? >> Yeah. I'll go and grab her. Do you have gloves on? >> Oh, you already um >> Yeah, I'm done. Yeah, yeah, yeah. >> Most retail theft looks like someone stuffing a jacket into a bag and walking fast. This one doesn't look like anything at all. A woman clocks in for her shift at a luxury department store in Boca Raton, Florida, the same store she's worked at for 2 years. Over the next 6 weeks, according to police, she runs a return for merchandise that doesn't exist, rings up a customer who isn't there on a register that was never switched on, and then packs designer clothing into a gift box and has the store ship it to her own front door, not smuggled out. Shipped, with a tracking number, Nordstrom at Town Center in Boca Raton. One of the more upscale addresses in South Florida retail, the kind of store where a single handbag can cost more than a month's rent, and where the loss prevention team is genuinely good at its job. Working there, in the handbag department, is a 47-year-old employee who's been with the company since November of 2022, 2 years on the payroll, trusted with a register, with merchandise, and with the shipping system that sends customer purchases out the door. And that's the thing about the losses that quietly hurt a store the most. They don't come from strangers running out the door. They come from people who were hired, trained, given a login, and shown exactly where the weak points are, which is why what happened next didn't get caught by a security guard at the exit. It got caught by a computer flagging a transaction that looked wrong. September 29th, 2024. Just after 4:00 in the afternoon, the employee is recorded at a register. According to the report, there is no customer standing there. There is no merchandise on the counter. And she processes a return, $172 for perfume. The money doesn't go back to a credit card. It goes onto a store gift card. Now, a return normally means someone brought something back. So, loss prevention checked what she walked in with that day. According to the report, she came in for her scheduled shift carrying no merchandise and no bags. Just a small clutch. And that clutch, in the investigator's words, would have been difficult to fit a bottle of perfume into. >> We had her Well, this whole investigation started with her this time. Um, two gift cards. They were used with her employee discount and without her employee discount, which flags in our system as suspicious. >> How long ago was that? >> That was September 29th. >> So, that was the first sentence. >> Yeah. Later that day, during the video review, we see that she selected five pairs of >> there too, cuz I want her here on the 1st of May. >> Five pairs of jeans. >> Yeah, can you hear me? >> Yeah. Upstairs, running downstairs, goes over to the register screen. You can see the register screen is >> You didn't break from there. You didn't go to the lobby for >> She's scanning the items. You have to go in and quickly get your stuff in if you're going to sell something. >> Yeah. >> She does none of that. She just scans the item, takes the sensor off, puts a little sticker on it. >> What's in the lobby for >> Boxes up several pairs of jeans, roughly 12 pairs of jeans. >> Okay. >> She ships it off. It goes to her address. So, she got it. and then she washed her Saturday. She did the same same thing this morning two or three times. >> She did two >> Two days >> two times first night stepping in one with the frog return. >> Okay. >> We interviewed her. She's trying to say she her mental state was not in place. That's why this happened. But she says she's a good person. Listen, she she says she made poor choices. She got fired by the store manager just now. Brought her down to total loss cabin. She said, "Okay." >> Okay. >> Here's your wrap. >> So, it's good. Hey, how you doing? >> May I tell you >> Sure, how are you? >> Fantastic. >> All right, so before I speak to you, right? I'm going to read you something, basically your rights. >> Oh, I'm not I have to pick up my daughter. I have to do the glass and just give it to her fast. That's all I ask. >> Okay. So >> to everything I just said. I just go. >> So, I'm going to be honest, all right? What time is it now? About 1:30? We're not going to get done before 2:00. >> She's 10 years old. I have nobody else to pick her up. >> Okay, but obviously we're here to reason, right? You know what I'm saying? Do you have anybody else to come pick her up? >> No, I have nobody here. I just moved here. >> I'm required to warn you before you make any statements you have the following constitutional rights. You have the right to remain silent and not answer any questions. Any statement you make must freely and voluntarily given. You have the right to representation of a lawyer of your choice before making statement during questioning. If you cannot afford a lawyer, you're entitled to a presence of a representative of court appointed lawyer before making any statement during questioning. If anytime during this interview you wish not to answer any questions, you're obliged to remain silent. I will make no threats or promises to induce you to make a statement that's not this is supposed to be on free will. Any statement can will be used against you in the court of law. Do you understand these rights? >> Yep. >> Okay. So, obviously you work for used to work for Nordstrom, right? How long did you work here for? >> 3 years. >> Okay. Um they brought to my attention that there's been some transactions, right? >> Yeah, we you to fix this. >> Okay. >> Discuss it. >> [clears throat] >> One through all one through all. >> So, tell me what happened. >> Stuff got shipped to my house that wasn't paid for. Jeans and perfume. >> Okay, and what was the reason for that? >> It wasn't intentional. It just happened I work here. I was doing a bunch of stuff. I I thought it was I was waiting for one of my colleagues to ring it up and so I ended up sending it and it never got paid for. >> Okay. >> It happened. >> Okay, but hear me out. You've been working for 3 years, right? >> what you're going to say. I get it 100%. Yes, my head is not in the best of places. >> That normally doesn't happen, right? When you ship it to your own address. >> 100%. [clears throat] >> Okay. >> Been a Been a Been a rough day with it. So, yes, I get it. You're 100% right. I accept it. >> So, basically you >> didn't do it on purpose, but it was it it happened. >> So, that's not the only time it happened too, right? Happened a few other times where you did some other transactions, right? So, you expect me to believe that all these other transactions you were >> whatever. >> Okay. Um what did you tell the your employer about it? What did you tell them? >> It doesn't It's just At this point it I'm going to pay it back and there's it's no point in me losing my job. It's I'm moving on and that's like it is what it is. It wasn't It wasn't done on purpose. It wasn't thought out ahead of time. It wasn't maliciously planned. It wasn't something that I schemed to do. >> So, back in September, what's the reason why that you I guess had that transaction and it basically got flagged, right? Got flagged in the system as some sort of suspicious theft. So, what was that about? Like when you're going through that transaction, go through you know, walk me through the mindset. >> You know what? It You do the transaction and then you can send something after the fact. Usually I buy stuff I pay for it stuff and then what is it What do you say it >> I'm sorry, I couldn't hear you. Can you go back? >> You buy stuff as an employee one way, then you get to I it and then I you should you put it in and you can send it after the fact. >> So, when you purchase stuff as employee, right? Do you normally have a manager? >> you can send it out. >> You don't need a manager. You don't need a manager to to approve it. >> No. >> Okay, and how did you pay for those items then? >> I usually pay them with my notion card. >> Okay, and what happened with the whole transaction? >> pay for it in the beginning of the day and then send it out at the end of the day. I just didn't pay for it at the beginning of the day and send it out at the end of the day and just didn't think. >> So, you didn't you didn't pay with your own uh credit card or anything like that. You just sent it out. >> Yeah. >> Okay, that was the first time. >> Correct. So, it's the same situation. It's just it is a there's always that gap in between the day that goes through It's not like I whatever. Yes. >> I'm just trying to figure it out, yeah. >> It's just a shitty situation and it just happened and it it's it's a learning experience. It's not something that I'm proud of. It's not something that I would continue to do. I'll have to maybe talk to my therapist about it and that's it. >> Okay. Um and then the second incident, right? When when was that? >> Same thing. Same exact occurrence and it was last week. I think she said, yeah. >> And what happened with that? >> It's the same exact thing. I was just buying something for somebody else and needed to have me shipping it out. Bought it the was going to in the morning, shipped it out in the afternoon. >> And >> It's just the same situation. When you're very busy, it just >> But when you work for 3 years, you kind of know what the rules are and >> It's It's seems that way, but things are always changing. Yes, it should be that way. >> Okay, and at some point did you return those items back to the store? >> No, but I'm going to pay for it. >> Did you return anything? Or >> No, I didn't even I didn't even realize they weren't paid for. >> Did she try to make a return or something with the gift cards? >> Um so, what there was a um a refund done that didn't have a receipt or March for a customer present. Um was refunded on both gift cards. It was later used with her discount. >> Okay, could you explain that? >> That was a ne- I have a neighbor who's a customer here. She's one of the bigger customers here. She came in twice to return a full bottle of Coco Chanel. She didn't have the proof of purchase. I said I can't take it back without a proof of purchase. That's our policy. So, she found a proof of purchase but the best I can do is a one common day time accommodation on a gift card. She said she would take that. She said she wanted a gift card. I said I'll take the gift card and then all this time she gave me the cash, I kept the gift card, and I gave her the tickets. That's it. It wasn't a really big >> Do you have any of this stuff also on video footage? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> And the transaction now is here. It was a full bottle. >> On video, do you see, I guess another subject there with her? >> No, she came in the last time I saw her with her. I think it was the first two times she came in to return. >> They need a female if you want to go over to Nordstrom at the mall. They need a female 10-37. >> So, on September 29th, you're making this return, right? >> lives She lives in my community, so I said I'll just go get I'll bring you back the gift card. >> Okay, and then use your employee discount, right? In reference >> Um on a different purchase, not on that. Like that was her purchase, paid for her at full. The gift card I bought from her, and then I bought stuff. >> What did you return? Did you just random items, or was it items that you you >> Okay. And she made that purchase when? >> She says it was 6 to 8 months ago. >> And there's no receipt to that, right? >> There was no proof of purchase, but I did speak to the fragrance person the first time they came in, and because the bottle was completely full, if they can if she can find some kind of something that shows it, we'll do a one common day transaction. >> Can you show me the first time she's made these transactions? >> This is the first time. >> This is the first time? So, this first time she's in this in this video, what is she doing right here? >> So, right here what she's doing is well, from when it started, she grabbed the gift card from the display right here. She's using her phone and she's inputting information from the phone onto the register, and she's manually keying everything in. >> Okay. >> That's the customer's information that I have in my phone. >> And then on your transaction from your end, do you see this alleged customer's transaction? >> Yes, I do. So, this is a copy >> What's the customer's name anyway, by the way? >> Zena. This is um that receipt for that transaction that was processed. So, um this is the information that was entered. Cuz for us uh receipt without um a return without a receipt requires um a DNA code. >> And where does your neighbor live? >> She lives a couple houses down in my new complex. >> Okay. And this address here is showing not even in Where do you live anyway? You live in Florida? >> Mhm. >> Okay, that that address shows somewhere in New York. >> She goes She lives in New York. >> Okay, so where is What is her address then? >> In Florida? >> In Florida, yeah. >> That I don't know. That's why I sent it to my house. >> Okay, but you said it's your neighbor's in same complex. >> She's away. Our kids play together. >> Okay, can you show me the second transaction? >> Yes, um >> Do you have your ID by the way? Just want to make sure. >> So, this is um the purchase of her utilizing that gift card. And this is my daughter. >> And who's that other subject there? >> Uh this is one of our employees in that same department. >> So, she's making a purchase with another employee with that gift card. >> Correct. >> And what did she purchase? >> She purchases I'm sorry, what if I don't want to >> perfume. Uh perfume for $175 and >> 31-year-old woman right now for $25. >> So, what was that about? Like, you took that gift card that's supposed to be for your neighbors, right? >> I did. Okay. And then you're making the same I'm asking you a question. One second. You keep interrupting me. So, you take that same gift card, you make another purchase with the same gift card that's supposed to be for your neighbor. How does that happen? She gave you the money for the gift card? Okay. Can I have your phone number, please? >> 516-782-8290 >> And show me the next transaction. So, the perfume being returned was never brought into the building, which means the $172 didn't come back from a customer. It came out of the store and landed on a gift card. But, when investigators backtracked her shift, they found something else from that exact same day. And this one is frankly remarkable. At 8 minutes past noon, shortly after arriving for work, she's recorded selecting five pairs of denim and placing them by her register. Small detail that matters, she works in handbags. The denim isn't her department. And then those jeans just sit there untouched for nearly 5 hours. At 2 minutes to 5, she goes through the motions of ringing up a sale. There's no customer at her register. >> She told us that she wasn't in the right state of mind when she she did these things and she said, "I'm not denying that I did it." She's saying, "I don't think I was in the right state of mind when I did it. I think I have some mental issues in my head and I need to go see somebody and talk to talk to a counselor or something like talk to faces which is like mental counseling. I don't want to speak to somebody but I haven't been able to yet cuz I'm so busy." And I was like, "Do you know what you did these things?" And she was like, "Yeah, I know." >> Yeah, and also too I told her like based on you've been working for 3 years right when you normally make a purchase for yourself, you would have to go upstairs. At any time throughout your 3 years here, you're not making a purchase for yourself. She said she was telling me and everybody else in the room that yeah, normally when employees make purchases that we can purchase ourselves. >> [music] >> I worked in retail when I was younger. You can make purchases for yourself, which I know you can't cuz I used to work in retail back in the day when I was younger. >> You have to go to another employee to >> Exactly, or a supervisor, right? I'm assuming right? Cuz I had this transaction about So obviously >> [music] >> And I had to go upstairs and then we had to check it out and then we could give the discount to verify the discount given and that kind of stuff. >> In in her 3 years here, she's made purchases before, right? The right way. >> Yeah. >> All right, she goes upstairs, no problems other than that. This has been going on since September, maybe longer. >> Probably longer. >> Okay. >> At least I don't have video. >> Okay. >> Just a floor. >> Okay. So September 29th was the first time you guys noticed it. What what brought that to your attention? >> A fraudulent return. >> Okay. >> So the return that happens if no merchandise present at the register. She creates a gift card for herself for a hundred and something dollars. >> It was like it was like perfume or something like that? >> She's trying to say that the that product came in and like we didn't see any product. There's no product on video. And then when she takes that product in in that same morning is when she went out there on the floor, selected all the jeans, brought them all downstairs. So she she literally walks in the door at the beginning of her shift. We watch her walk in with her little bag, goes out to the floor. >> She Did she bring like where did she get the perfume from off the sales floor? >> I don't know. She didn't have perfume or perfume. >> Okay. >> There's nothing on video. There's nothing in her bag. >> Nothing in her bag, nothing at the counter. >> to say some other customer gave it to her and she put it in the damage bag and just processed it. But when she processes it, she also scans a UII. So let me just start it from the beginning just so you have clarity and an understanding. >> And according to loss prevention, she wasn't even logged in. The screen was sitting in sleep mode the entire time. She was performing a transaction for a camera on a machine that was asleep. Loss prevention explained why that stands out. Store policy requires an employee purchase to be rung up by another employee or a supervisor. You don't ring yourself up. And a real transaction requires being logged in with the screen in purchasing mode. Neither of those things happened. Then she takes the five pairs of denim, adds two shirts, and places all seven items into a gift box to be sent out. Loss prevention pulled the shipping record. That box was addressed to her home. $1,380 of merchandise packed by the store, labeled by the store, and mailed by the store to the employee's own house. Six weeks later, on November 9th, it happens again. At 11 minutes past 4:00, she's recorded selecting items throughout the store. 10 minutes after that, according to the report, she demagnetizes them. That word matters. Demagnetizing is how a store deactivates a security tag so an item can leave without setting off the alarms at the door. It's a normal part of a legitimate sale. Done to merchandise nobody paid for, it's a deliberate step to defeat the store's own alarm system. She puts the items in a gift box and places that box on a ship station at the loading dock. Loss prevention verified the intended delivery address. >> No longer muted. >> neighbor >> I have no neighbors [music] here. We're still not still [clears throat] be nobody we only live in this house. >> Okay, so let's >> No, my husband is away. He's never away. He's away for these three days. >> Can I be I'm going to be honest with you. So, we're going to have to contact the school. You're not going to make it. >> What time will I be able >> You're not going to make it there unless you have long the school can >> I'll be there at 3:30 if you want. >> Look after your daughter, but it's better to let them know in advance than your daughter to sitting there clueless. And obviously we're not going to tell your daughter um um what the situation is. Is he Is he Is he going to perform a thing? >> No, he's talking to the uh talking to the jail commander. Yeah, please. Yeah. That's not even a question. Did you want to make a phone call? >> I'm trying to call somebody to try to give me an idea. >> So, right now you're under arrest, right? You're not free to leave, right? You're going to be doing some paperwork with me at the police department. After you're done with there, you're going to go up to county jail and get released from there, okay? >> Okay. >> All right, so I'm going to gather as much information as possible so I can make this process smooth because obviously you want to get home to your to your daughter, right? You want to be with your family. So, I'm going to do my best to make sure that this goes smoothly, all right? Do you have any questions in the meantime? >> Can you follow me to bring home >> No, I cannot do any of that stuff, okay? All right, so again, this this officer here is going to pat you down, make sure you have no weapons or anything on you, all right? All the jewelry, all that stuff needs to be taken off, put in your bag. That will all go with you up to county jail, right? As of right now, again, you're under arrest, right? For um the theft and also organized scheme to defraud, okay? So, just [music] do me a favor, stand up, get patted down by this officer. >> Okay. >> Turn around. >> Her home, again, another $363. And that's the pattern that turns three separate incidents into a case, not one impulsive moment, a method repeated using the store's own systems as the delivery mechanism. On November 12th, 2024, Boca Raton police are called to the store. Officer K. Fong arrives to find the employee already detained by loss prevention. He reads her Miranda warnings from a pre-printed card. She says she understands them, and she agrees to talk. And what follows, according to the report, is a series of explanations that don't fit together. She says she wasn't in the right headspace. She admits to the transactions, but then she explains the perfume return by saying a neighbor in her complex told her to return it and put the money on a gift card. A neighbor, for merchandise that was never carried into the building. On the shipped clothing, she says she wasn't intentionally stealing, she was waiting for one of her colleagues to ring her up, and they never did. So, she ended up sending the items to herself without paying for them. Read that one more time. The defense is, "Nobody was available to charge me, so I mailed it to my house instead." And then she adds that employees are allowed to make purchases and have them shipped out, which is true. Employees can do that. What they can't do is skip the paying part. >> And Lydia, don't worry, we will work on a plan for Lydia. But I need you to We need you to really think >> It's hard right now. >> But you We need to think about who could Who can >> I have nobody in mind. Um I have nobody in mind. >> Is it a magnet? >> No family, no neighbors. >> I don't. And my husband, who's getting the little ones in Florida. >> Where exactly is he? >> He's got to get the girls for me. >> Orlando? >> Orlando. >> Okay, it's a 3-hour car ride. >> We'll get him on the way. He can't leave. Okay, well >> We're making some some tough decisions. >> Cuz you need your husband to start driving or to see if he's picking up the kids from the school or holding them. >> That's that's what we're talking about. >> that. >> Did you >> A neighbor, a girlfriend, anyone? >> Did you hear what she meant by that? And do you know what DCF is? Yeah. We'd much rather have your husband come get her. >> Okay. Let's keep all of those little little stuff together, so. >> And you need you need drop the ring in the necklace. >> What about 4:00? No. >> Well, so >> I have it as a drawer. That's why I'm telling you why I'm asking. >> Where at Where at? >> We need 4:00 for her. >> So, at dismissal >> For her I might be able to get a ride home for her. >> Okay. We'll arrange both, so let's just step by step. >> I I am. >> And then we'll stop at 2:00 right And like like I said though Yeah, you just do it. >> Your daughter won't be left alone. We'll We'll make sure we arrange for it, but you got to We got to try to help you out here. >> Okay, you have made the point. You just drop it off. We'll have to fish it out with the person that you have some little compartment. >> Can I get it right there? Designer? >> I'll be good. >> They're actually My husband is going to get it out for us, so I don't see it. Do you have it like a little a little >> Do you want to be on the report now? >> Yes, exactly. >> Is your daughter? >> Yeah. >> This is your car. >> I think it's our >> We have to put together um chains. >> Including the rings, too. >> Okay. >> And you drop it off. >> Thank you. All right. Any necklace? >> I just put all my jewelry in the little chain pouch. Any other piercings? Any rings? Can you take them all out? >> No. >> Okay. >> The one is in my bag now. >> We can take it out for you. >> Okay. I can take things out. We'll take them all out. >> Do you want to feel me up tonight? >> Give me a second. Let's do this first. Turn it. Any piercings or anything? >> No, nothing. >> What do I need when I head out of here? Is just uh tape statement. You swear to me that you keep [music] saying them. Um first off and also I don't need you to >> I I You know what I had? I had my hair tied >> It's one of those like frauds. >> Yeah, here you go. And this is hers. What's your case number? You got You know it yet? And then loss prevention produced the one fact that collapses every version of this. They went back through her employment history and verified that this employee had completed over 100 previous transactions the correct way. Rung up by another employee or a supervisor, exactly as store policy requires. A hundred times she followed the rule. >> This is Officer Jay Cohen with the Boca Raton Police Services Department. The date is November 12th, 2024. Time's approximately 2:30 p.m. Following is a taped statement with >> Stephanie >> Reference the Boca Raton Police Services Department case number 2024-13218. The statement is being taken at Nordstrom's in the loss prevention office. Raise your right hand. Do you solemnly swear that the statement you give will be the truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth, so help you God? >> Yes. >> Please state your full legal name. >> Stephanie >> [clears throat] >> Oh, Stephanie Viviana G. >> Okay. Stephanie Okay, Stephanie, uh we're here today because of an investigation that took place about an employee that works here. Could you explain to me the the origins of the investigation and and what transpired as the investigation what unraveled and what did it reveal? >> Yeah, of course. Um so, we started working with a new um exception based reporting system. So, what when looking into that report on Friday, November 1st, we discovered a um transaction where a receipt was not utilized. Looked into it, and then we pulled footage, and we can see that Sally Kuchar is processing a return on September 29th. And there is no customer, there's no merchandise present. When looking into it further, it's for a Coco Chanel fragrance. During the During the interview process upstairs, Sally confirmed that tester should have been present. The tester was not present during footage. We do have that saved to confirm that as well, too. Sally Later on that same day, on September 29th, she packaged five pairs of denims and two long-sleeve shirts. We have her walking into the building that day on September 29th, which was a Sunday, coming in from her shift at 12:00, walking in, and immediately starting selection of the five denims on the shop floor. She then makes her way down with the product maybe a few minutes later. So, she comes in 12:04, is already downstairs in her handbag department by 12:11 p.m. And four five hours later, so approximately 4:30, 5:00 that day, is when she [music] mimics a transaction on the register. So, when we are doing the investigation on her, we also come across this merchandise theft that she is that she is doing. So, [music] she On the register screen, she does not sign on. It's very very clear that she does not sign on, cuz the screen >> Which means the argument that she didn't understand the process doesn't survive contact with her own record. She knew precisely how an employee purchase was supposed to work, because she'd done it right over 100 times before doing it this way three times. She was arrested and charged with two felonies, organized scheme to defraud under $20,000, and grand theft. >> All right, lady, my call the phone, though. >> All right. >> They shouldn't have linked this on me. >> All right, sounds good. >> All right. >> All right, appreciate it. Thank you. The total value of the property listed on the arrest paperwork, $1,915. She was handcuffed, taken to the police department, and then transported to the Palm Beach County Jail. >> Can I have anything Can you use anything like that on this? >> The cameras? Not yet, soon. Yeah, we'll switch over to that. >> Bye, Gareth. Under your fingers. Just put your palms together. Under your >> [snorts] >> I just disinfected them, too. >> Huh? >> I just disinfected them, too. That's all. >> What other way could you get them >> The last person was disgusting. Sorry. >> Whatever way you can get them to us. >> Uber? I'm not sure if Uber does that, or if you want to do that. >> I'm trying to give you the most possible way.
