I know, I know, I know. Take a deep deep breath. Let's get her off the road. Let's get her off the road. Ma'am. >> I just got MY CAR FIXED. >> MA'AM. >> [screaming] >> NO. >> Sit on the curb. >> No. >> Sit on the curb. >> I just got my car fixed, you mother [ __ ] >> I got it. I got it. All right? >> Don't come over here. >> You just hang out. Take a deep breath. I'm sorry about your car, okay? >> Yeah, that's good. >> It is good. >> I'm alive and I'm talking to you. >> You are alive. Easy. Easy. Easy. Easy. >> [crying] >> I just got my car fixed. >> It's just after 2:00 in the morning in Westfield, New Jersey and a car has slammed into a parked vehicle and a utility pole. By the time officers arrive, the driver is still there and she is not calm. Within minutes, she'll tell the officers to their faces that she's going to punch them. What starts as a late-night crash is about to turn into something far more serious and all of it is captured on body cam. The date is June 14th, 2024 at around 2:14 in the morning. Multiple 911 callers report the same thing, a vehicle has crashed into a parked car and a utility pole near South Avenue West. A crash like that at that hour is exactly [music] the kind of call that points to an impaired driver. Westfield officers respond and find the driver still at the scene. Her name is Crystal Beverly and she's 35 years old. And from the very first moments, officers can tell this is not [music] going to be a simple stop. Officers approach and do what they're trained to do, try to slow everything down. >> I just got my car I just got my car fixed. I got it right here. >> Deep breath. Deep breath. Deep breath. >> Deep breaths. Deep breaths. Deep breaths. >> [laughter] >> I know. I know. I know. Deep breaths. Let's get her off the road. Get her off the road. >> MY BODY HURTS. >> OKAY, I'm going to have you sit right here. Come here. >> No. >> Come on. Come I don't want you in the road, ma'am. I don't want you getting hit. All right. All right. All right. >> I don't >> Come back. >> I don't want to be in the driving lane. >> It's all right. It's all right. Accidents happen. Oh, he's going to Accidents happen. Accidents happen. That's why we have insurance, right? Accidents happen. >> My god, my head hurts. My god, my head >> [laughter] >> Accidents Accidents happen. >> I just want to go to bed. >> I [laughter] know. It's It's It sucks. I know. I know. >> I just want to go to bed. My head hurts. >> Come here, my dear. Please come back, all right? >> Huh? >> Take some deep breaths, OKAY? >> NO, IT'S NOT OKAY. I I I'm freaking alive. I'm freaking alive, and my freaking body hurts. >> Okay. >> They attempt to talk to her, to reason with her, to get through the basics of a crash investigation. But according to the department, >> [music] >> Beverly quickly becomes belligerent. Her tone hardens. Her cooperation disappears. And then she says the thing that puts everyone on alert. She tells the officers she's going to punch them in the face. A threat like that changes the [music] entire dynamic of a stop. >> Ma'am, do you want to take a seat? We're going to have an ambulance come check you out. >> mean? We're staying >> We're going to have an ambulance right here. Take a seat on the ground. >> No. >> Okay. All right. We're going to have an ambulance come check you out, okay? Your airbags went off. Okay? >> I [screaming] I Ma'am. >> I just GOT MY CAR FIXED. >> MA'AM, LOOK AT ME. LOOK AT ME. >> NO. >> Sit on the curb. >> No. >> Sit on the curb. Sit on the curb now. >> No. And don't touch me. >> Okay. If you hit me with your phone again, you're we're going to have to touch you, all right? I'm giving you one warning. You're going to be placed under arrest. >> Don't touch me. >> Okay. Sit on the ground. >> Now the officers have to think not just about a DUI investigation, but about safety theirs and hers. The body cam shows the scene escalating. The driver growing more combative. The officers working to keep control without making it worse. And according to police, at one point she lunges at an officer. That single move going at an officer is what [music] turns a driving offense into a violent one. >> Okay. Sit on the ground. >> Don't touch my phone either. >> Sit on the ground. Sit on the ground. >> Come on. >> Sit on the ground. All right, I'm giving you one chance due to the circumstances with your car. All right? You just hit me with your phone. >> So, and you picked up my phone. >> I did cuz you threw it on the ground. >> Don't touch it. >> Okay. Please take a seat until the ambulance gets here, okay? I'm going to ask you one more time. All right? Can you please take a seat? I'm not giving you your phone, all right? >> Well, where is the ambulance? >> It's on its way. What is your name? >> Crystal. >> What is your name? Ma'am, we're here to help you, okay? >> My name is Crystal. >> Crystal, nice to meet you. Can you please come here? Please get out of the way. >> What? >> Get to the side of the road. You're walking in the middle of the street. Okay? >> Okay. >> I and I don't I don't want you to get more hurt, okay? >> even know who hit me. Like >> Okay. Is this your car? Okay, no problem. You're all right? What's wrong? >> This is the only car I can afford. >> Don't don't worry about it. You know, it's take it one step at a time. What what's your phone number? Okay. Do you have the insurance card? >> Yes, sir. >> Okay, you got it with you? >> It's in the empty it, sir. >> Yeah, you know. No problem. >> Please take a seat, miss. Please take a seat. >> This [ __ ] is ridiculous. I All I know is that I'm sore. >> I want to get you checked out by an ambulance. >> me questions. >> I want to get you checked out by an ambulance. >> Okay. >> I'm [ __ ] alive. >> Okay. Well, yes, you are alive. >> 48. It's also This is closer to uh between downtown and Covert. >> Please take a seat. I don't want you to fall. >> my car's facing you. Well, yes, you are alive. >> 48. It's also This is closer to uh between downtown and Covert. >> Please take a seat. I don't want you to fall. >> my car's facing you. You're [ __ ] asking me dumb [ __ ] questions. >> Okay. >> You dumb [ __ ] >> Okay. All right, miss. All right. Can you please come here? Man. Please a seat. >> Don't Don't follow me. Hi. Please come get me. I need to be checked out cuz you can't help me. I'm going to mess around and punch you in the face. >> want you to punch me in the face. You can't leave. >> Do not touch me. >> Please stay right there. >> I'm going to punch you. >> Stay right there, okay? >> Cuz I just got my car fixed, you [ __ ] >> Okay. I got it. I got it. All right? >> Don't come nowhere near me. >> Please stay where you are. >> Don't touch me. >> I don't want to touch you, but if you keep moving around, you're going to force us to keep you here. I don't want to go to that point. I'm going to tell you one more time. Please calm down. Do you want to take a seat on the on the front of my car? >> This is the moment the whole case pivots. It's worth pausing on what the officers are actually doing here. They're not matching her energy. They're trying to de-escalate to give a clearly agitated person a chance to comply before force becomes necessary. >> I I swear to god I'm going to punch you in the face. Don't [ __ ] touch me. >> I don't want to touch you. >> Don't nobody touch me. I swear to god I'll punch you in the face. >> I don't want to touch you. All right? But if you keep moving around I I don't want to touch you. I'm not going to punch you. I'm not going to punch you. All right? Can you please just hang out? Take a deep breath. I'm sorry about your car, okay? Okay? I'm sorry about your car. I need you to calm down, all right? Okay? Just stay where you are. Do you want to take a seat on the front of this car? >> Cuz I know we had batteries. >> Calm down. >> No. >> Okay. All right. You just can't leave, okay? Please stay here. All right? I'm going to get you checked out by an ambulance due to the crash, okay? The good The good The good part is you don't look like you have any cuts or bruises or anything, all right? >> Yeah, that's good. >> It is good. You are alive. You are alive. Okay, I don't want to touch you, miss, but please don't go anywhere. No. All right? Can you please just hang out, miss? Can you please just hang out? Please hang out. I I don't want to touch you, miss. I don't want to I don't want to touch you, okay? Can we please go over here and take a seat? >> That's the balance every officer walks in a moment like this. Contain the threat, but don't inflame it. And on a DUI stop, where the driver may not be thinking clearly, that balance is even harder to hold eventually. Beverly is placed under arrest. >> All right, guys. I'm going to get cuffs on her. Keep her down. As soon as she's cuffed, bring her right up, all right? She's all right. She's all right. I got you, Eva. I got you. Everyone take a breath. We'll get the cuffs on and we'll bring her right up, okay? Everyone take a breath. Slow. Slow. Slow. Slow. Slow. This is kind of stuck on there with the cuffs. Okay. We'll get it all off after. We'll get it all off after. All right, right up right up. Bring her up. Miss, you're under arrest for assault resisting. All right? Yeah. Bring her back to whoever's car that is. Go straight to it. Relax. Relax. Relax. Relax. >> Yes, it is. Why not? It's my backpack. >> All right. >> I'm pretty sure Like, where am I going? It's in a police car, honey. >> Oh, there we are. There we are. You don't get hurt if you stay Just do a back hand real quick. As best you can. As best you can. All right, man. Relax. Relax. Make sure they're both out, dude. You're secure. That's all. >> [ __ ] I've been in the accident all over again. Like, what the [ __ ] How the [ __ ] did I end up in an accident? I didn't even I wasn't even I wasn't even going I wasn't even going fast. Like, how how do I smash? I don't even know what type of car that is and where was the accident? Like, I didn't even >> Yeah, I don't we didn't know what happened with that, but why why are you why are you wilding out? >> I because I hit a car. >> Yeah, but like like >> And then he's like, "Oh, you you're hitting me." >> We ain't we're we're not doing that. >> You put me down and grabbed me and you were hurting me. I hit I hit the officer. >> We were trying to make sure you're okay. >> Yeah. >> A car is just a car, right? That that can be replaced. We're making sure you're okay. >> Yes, I am fine. >> over here wilding out. >> I wasn't even wilding. >> You weren't? >> No. >> You you were wilding out a little bit. >> I I was wilding out because like I just been in I fixed I can't fix my car. I came home like I went to the bank around like 1:00. >> Yeah. >> No, I'm saying what happened to your car before >> It was in an accident. >> Yeah, oh, it was in an accident after that? >> And I just got into an accident again. >> where was that first accident at? >> The accident was on Tremley. >> Where's that? What town is that? >> Elizabeth. >> Oh, Elizabeth? Is that where you live, Elizabeth? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Across the street. Like, around the corner from where I live, I just went to the bank. Like, I went to the bank to get some draw some money to draw out some money and then I end up coming home and then I end up before I even went to the bank, I end up in an accident. Like, right around the corner like in a jug handle. >> Oh, really? >> Can you scratch my nose because it really itches. >> No, I can't. I can't because you just did all that. >> It itches. >> I know, but we I can't do it right now. Not definitely not right now. Where were you at tonight? >> I went to the club. I didn't even have that many >> What club? >> I went to Hugo's. >> What's that? >> I went to Hugo's in Plainfield. >> Hugo's? >> Yeah. I didn't even have that many drinks. >> No? >> No. And I was fine. I was driving. Like I was literally driving up the street. >> Did you go there with some friends and stuff, hanging out? >> Yeah, I was with my cousin. Then she ended up leaving and then I ended up seeing somebody that I knew, so I just like >> and hung out with them? >> Yeah, I just stayed to the end. >> What were you drinking there? Anything good or >> I didn't No, I didn't even have like many drinks. My cousin left and I couldn't see where she was at. There was somebody wearing the same color as her. >> Okay. >> But she wasn't there, so the the one that I stayed with to the end, he was like he smoked, so I ended up having like a pull. >> Yeah. >> I was fine. >> you. >> I didn't even have I'm sober. Like I won't Like I literally walked out of my whole car. Like I walked out of my car fine. >> Mhm. >> I'm upset for the fact that I've been in a a freaking accident. >> scary, right? >> Yeah. Impacted. Boom. Pow. Like Just I just fixed my car. And then I'm in an accident. >> You were in the other one, right? I was in the other one. >> I was driving. I seen cars forward like driving forward and then I drove like I was driving straight. I didn't do nothing else. >> Mhm. >> I just was driving and then all of a sudden boom. What the heck? >> Yeah. >> Like impacted literally. >> Right. >> To the pack to the >> You're going back home? >> I'm Yeah, I'm supposed to go back home. >> Where's home at, you know? >> In Elizabeth. >> Oh, it's in Elizabeth, okay. >> Yeah. >> All right. >> I have ID. >> I hear you. Tracy, thank you. >> Tracy, thank you. >> If you could If you could just add the cat number and then the uh the uh you know the phone >> She's taken to Westfield [music] Police Headquarters, where she's processed and issued summonses, and the charges reflect how far the encounter escalated. She's charged with driving while intoxicated. >> All right, Crystal. What am I walking you down? >> All right, it was Crystal? All right. I don't want to get your name wrong. All right. You need help stepping out? I don't want you to trip. >> No, I'm going to I'm sorry, but I can't step out. >> Okay. >> Let me take my time. >> Yeah, take your time. No rush here. Just lock my car, buddy. >> Yep. >> All right, I want to get you to this slick door. Watch she's got a couple steps right here. >> Mhm. >> Take your time. >> Hello. >> All right. Here we go. Just right in here to this bench. >> But she's also charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, and obstructing the administration of law. One late night crash, four charges, and three of them for what happened after the police arrived after processing. Beverly is given a Union County Superior Court date and [music] released to a sober adult. >> All right. Have a seat. All right. >> All right, [snorts] I'm going to >> Crystal Beverly >> Not that much on the side of my head. >> Okay, phone number >> What do you mean? Crystal Beverly Crystal, you're okay? You injured anywhere? >> Yeah. >> Mhm. Your hips? >> Yes. >> 125. Tag number is 803. >> My left. Okay, how did that come to happen? >> And it's important to be fair here. These are charges, not convictions. The body cam shows a chaotic, heated scene, but under the law, Crystal Beverly is presumed innocent unless the case is proven in court. What the footage really captures is how fast an ordinary bad night can spiral once alcohol and a badge end up in the same place. A crash into a pole, a threat to punch the police, a lunge that turned a traffic case into an assault case, and officers who kept their cool while someone else lost theirs. So, what's your take? Did they handle it the right way? Or should this have gone differently? Let us know in the comments and subscribe to She Body Cam for more.
