104. Are you stopping that guy or what? >> A report was made after a Brinks employee returned from his route. One ATM bag was missing. Inside, $14,000 in cash. Then investigators found something on camera that changed everything. >> Hey, how's it going, sir? >> Good. >> So, what's going on? >> All right. Um, I'm with We're both with Brinks. with brink security. And last Friday, the 21st, we had a uh messenger who went on route. Messengers are the ones that drive the armored vehicles, right? >> Um he checked out his route and one of the bags like midstream he didn't even finish his route. He only did three and then he came back, made an excuse that um his kids was sick or something so he had to come back. Well, we're missing a bat. So, uh, Liz was here, um, kind of supporting the branch here and watched him go to a rest stop. Well, we don't service a rest stop, but the trucks up >> the one up on the interstate. >> Yeah. Do you know if they have cameras up there? >> I don't. Uh, they might. I'll have to check. >> Okay. But we have cameras in our truck, so I can see him. He takes his backpack out and he takes uh brings coal bag. Nicole bag is a black bag that where they put their uh money and stuff in and they go in and out of a business. Well, he takes his bag and he goes probably to the restroom. So, I want to pull I want to pull the hard drive from the truck and see actually where he goes. But then we get him coming back cuz we have internal cameras also that we can see live. and he brings his uh coal bag back and he takes his backpack out and then he starts stuffing stuff on top of um the bag trying to conceal like he opens up his backpack. >> He stuff on top of the >> inside of his backpack. >> Okay. >> So he gets his you see him get his jacket and he opens up his backpack and stuffs his jacket on the top of it. So that's where we believe >> um >> they took the money out of the delivery bag, >> put it into his backpack most likely. Yeah, cuz he left. So he left with five ATM bags. I counted him before he left. He did no ATMs. He stopped at the rest stop. You see him get off with the bag. He comes back on, takes his backpack out, shoves his stuff on top. And >> so he stops at the rest stop. He takes a money bag and his backpack out of the truck, right? >> Yeah. >> And then comes back and takes his backpack out of the money bag, puts his jacket on top of it, zips it shut, comes back to the branch. Nobody searches him. He leaves with his backpack. I counted on camera only four ATMs came back. He didn't do any ATMs. There should have been five ATMs. >> He only had 13 rounds. >> 13 stops. >> 13 stops. >> So, just just for clarity, so he went to a place, the rest stop. Would that ever happen normally for a driver to go to a location that's not part of the route? Now, >> he could have gone to the bathroom, but not with a coal bag. >> Yeah. >> Right. You never take the bag. I'm assuming that's part of like protocol. because they they have a uh route sequence that they have to adhere to and when they deviate from that they know the branch knows that they went off a route, >> right? >> So that wasn't even on the route. There's no stop at that truck stop or the rest stop. >> Is it even is it in between any two stops or >> it's on our drive branch cuz he was in Panama City Beach. >> So I called him today and talked to him and said, "Hey, you know, did you have any problem with your route?" Um he goes, "No, no." I said, "Hey, I I I understand that you quit." He goes, "Yeah, I quit. Just not for me." So, after he left that day, uh, when did he throw his uniforms? >> So, I guess between when he brought his route back and didn't finish it on Friday and when they showed up to open the ranch on Saturday, he threw his uniforms over the fence and texted the manager that he quit and he hasn't been back since. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Is there any way for me to look at the video from inside the truck what you were describing to me? >> Can you show that to me? Um, well, that's why I'm here cuz I I was trying to get you guys to come to the hotel cuz we had everything laid out. >> I got the lieutenant said, "Can you come here?" So, I got everything that you can look at. >> Uh, do you need like a computer or a desk or something? We can go inside the precinct. I'll just go around this. I don't think they have a key swipe here for me to get in. >> So, I'll have to go open it from the other side. >> Okay. You want to wait here? >> Yeah. If you just wait here for a second, I should be able to go open it. What I've gathered so far is that like those money, the ATM bags, he wasn't he didn't do any of those that he was supposed to do. >> Okay. >> He might have had some other stuff, but it wasn't those ATM bags with like a lot of cash. >> Gotcha. >> Okay. Yeah. Just um before he hit the house, it may end up getting kicked up to have an investigations cuz they were probably going to want to interview him if the money's not there. >> Okay. >> So, let me see how Lieutenant wants to handle it. >> Yep. >> But with that amount of money, it may be >> Yeah, it's 104,000. 4K. Where's uh house at? >> It's not far. >> Like I said, Gther's going to get the eye now um to make sure his vehicle's there and keep an eye in case he tries to leave. >> And what's his name? >> Brian. C R I A N. He's 26. >> Just immediately get him out of the car. Go. 1015. 46 County Sheriff's Office. Go ahead, step out for me. Explain that in a minute. 263 40 with 258 on five. >> Are you stopping that guy or what? We have him stopped. He's 1050. >> You ain't got anything on you. Carry 5. Carter, go ahead. >> Could you hold them for me? >> You got anything on you? >> No knives, guns, nothing. I don't Lift this foot up for me. >> Why didn't you just slide your shoe on me? 263 125 Nice. Have a seat. 91 carry 91 and the cat. You know what I'm saying? Like he won't carry. >> Hey, he just said that his wife and the kids are at the house. >> Sergeant said to go to the house with him so that y'all can secure it. 104. He's got uh about $920 in just 20s in his wallet. >> What do you want us to do with him? Hang tight here or what? So, we're still out with the truck. I can't see anything in plain view for us to search it or anything like that, but uh we're just going to hang tight with the truck, but what what do you want us to do from here with him and everything? So, what we need to do is so the denominations of the money that was in the money bag was all 20s. So, he's got all 20s in his wallet. >> Okay. >> So, we're going to seize that money. Um, so we need to fill out this form saying um that we're seizing whatever cash is in his wallet. We have to just make sure we count it again. >> Um, and then we're going to do a cash count form also. Do you have one of those? >> I believe so. Okay. >> So, all right. So, 38 quantity would be 38. Make sure obviously it's legible because this is going to be turned in. And then two $100 bills. So two and then obviously total would be 200 for the hundreds and then 3820s. >> So I was counting >> I think it's >> I think it's like 700 I believe. 7 something. 40 60 801 20 40 60 82 20 40 60 83 20 40 60 84 20 40 60 85 20 40 60 86 20 40 60 87 20 40 $760. >> Has he said anything at all? >> We haven't. But we haven't Miranda asked anything. >> The only thing he did say when we got him out of the truck, uh, he said, "What is this about?" But we just said, "We'll get to you in a minute about it." >> Okay. >> How much money did he have? >> $980. >> But it was 3820s and $200 bills. >> 3820s is consistent. The money was set for an ATM and it was all in uh was all 20s. >> So 104k in 20s. >> Mhm. She said it was 10 bricks and two bands like and in the video it's it's like big bags of of money. They're clear blue and you can see the bags and all the money in them. >> We've already filled out the seizure paperwork for the money and then we're working on a contract recording now. >> Okay. Cuz that's going to be a search warrant. Yeah, that's the easiest way to do it. >> Um or best way to do it. Obviously, the best case scenario would be if he just spills his guts and tells us where all the money is. But I would be shocked. It's it I would guess this goes one of two ways. Either he spills everything or he lawyers up a medal leader. So, try to build a rapport real quick, right? What are some things that are going to jump out that you can probably connect with them? >> The veteran thing I'm going to ask I'm going to ask him about that. >> Probably former Marine based off what I'm seeing. Um the way that I approach this big that made a really bad decision about a week ago. So, >> and the the the back to the case. So, you basically someone made an admin error and they put an extra ATM bag of money in his bucket that was going on his truck. So, it wasn't logged. It wasn't checked into him. So, basically moment of opportunity. Oh, this isn't accounted for. So, I made that decision. >> Yeah. Whenever he was presented with Let's see what happens. Got to read the Miranda and Mr. I'm Deputy Glass with the sheriff's office. Since you're in handcuffs in the back of a car, I got to read you this before we can talk. Okay, >> I got you. >> You have the right to remain silent. Do you understand that, sir? >> I do. >> Anything you say can be used against you in court. Do you understand that? >> Yes, sir. >> You have the right to talk to a lawyer for advice before he ask you any questions and to have him with you during questioning. If you can't afford a lawyer, one will be appointed to you before any questioning if you wish. You decide to answer questions without a lawyer present, you will still have the right to stop at any time. You also have the right to stop answering any time until you talk to a lawyer. Do you understand all those rights I've explained to you? >> Yes, sir. >> Uh let me just knock out um some of your details. How do you spell your middle name? Um what branch of the military were you in? >> Uh Marine Corp. >> Marine Corps? >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. What where did you serve at? >> Uh all over the place. I was in Okinawa, California, North Carolina. Um anywhere. >> What What' you do? What was your MOS? >> Uh, military, please. Can I handle it? >> Okay. Okay. Um, yeah, I've done most of that stuff to be honest. I've been stateside all my career. Never got any of the deployments unfortunately. >> I missed it. >> Did you retire or did you just >> I got hurt. I needed a knee replacement. So, >> ah, so you got disability from the VA and stuff like that. Okay. Um, so the reason that we're talking to you right now, uh, >> I already know that Mike Wong called me. I didn't think their money is flow. They lose all the time. >> Okay. Okay. Well, here's here's the thing you got to understand. Brinks has been doing this for a really long time. >> They have a lot of systems in place, some of which were jked to make this happen. However, there is a detailed record of everything. >> I I worked there. I understand it. And I didn't take their money. Like, their bags disappear constantly. >> It's crazy. It's because I quit. They were bitter about it. phone. >> Okay. So, do you know the bag that they're talking about? >> I have no idea cuz I didn't take a bag. So, I don't even need the details. So, I take them all. It's crazy. >> Okay. Well, so you did a number of things that are abnormal, right? >> Why? >> Because every again, everything they do, everything's on video. Everything's tracked. >> Right. >> So, do you remember stopping at a rest stop on the way back from your route? >> Yeah. I had to go to the bathroom. >> You had to go to the bathroom. Okay. Did um why' you why'd you end your route early that day? >> Because my door wasn't working. Both doors were like stuck shut, so I didn't I couldn't get in and out. >> Okay. Um so you're in the route early cuz the doors you say stop at the bathroom on the way. Do you normally take a money bag with you into the bathroom? >> I had my black uh brinks bag with me. Yeah, because the doors were all screwy. I didn't want to get locked out with everything. So I brought all the keys and everything with me in there. >> Okay. Um, do you normally bring that backpack that you had in in the money bag with you? >> Yeah, I bring all my stuff with me. >> Well, I mean, do you normally bring that bag to work? >> Oh, yeah. I bring it over your stuff. >> Okay. Is it a >> checkbook bag? >> Yeah. Is that in policy? >> Um, I don't know what the policy is. >> Well, they said that my understanding is that the if you have a personal bag, it's supposed to be either clear or like a mesh bag so you can see in it. And why I guess no one no one would love by that then. >> Okay, that may be so I'm just asking, right? Um do they normally search bags like that that aren't uh clear or mesh bags? >> Um kind of sometimes it's not they don't follow protocol there. They're very sloppy. There's money everywhere and everything. This doesn't surprise me. They just accused another guy of stealing money not too long ago. >> Okay. Okay. Understand, like I said, the way everything's tracked, it's very clear that you take all five bags out, the ATM bags, the blue ones, right? You take five ATM bags, you load them on the truck. That's all on video. >> Yeah, I know. I brought them back. I know I brought all of them back when they didn't work. >> And on video, they have you checking back in four bags, not five. >> I didn't take a fit bag. >> Right. So, that means that that bag disappeared while it was with you. You're the only person. >> No way. I had everything scanned in. Whatever. Like I guess I'll just take a lawyer cuz I didn't steal any bag. So, >> okay. >> He knows he knows he's the jigs up, but um >> yeah, I don't think he has much hope of uh >> Investigators believed one of the five ATM bags had disappeared while in the driver's possession. When confronted, he denied taking the money and insisted he had only stopped at the rest area to use the bathroom, but investigators pointed to the footage showing five bags leaving the branch and only four returning. He maintained his innocence and eventually asked for a lawyer. The case ended with him being charged with grand theft. What do you think? Did investigators have enough evidence to support the charge?
