She is taken to hospital with severe injuries. Police focus on two women. Antonette Stephens, 27, who lives at the complex, and her fiance's sister, 17-year-old Janine Gonzalez, visiting from Buffalo, New York. The man connecting all three is Daniel Gonzalez. He is Antonette's fiance and Janine's brother. And according to police, he had also been in a relationship with Ashley. The confrontation was recorded on a cell phone, and that video would become evidence. Late that night, detectives go to the apartment. By then, they know that Ashley has died. It's just right up the street. >> Okay. >> All right. So, they had the altercation earlier at the apartment. >> Yes, sir. >> Okay, which you don't know anything about. >> No, I was informed that while I was sleeping, she rang my phone to my phone and yes, she deleted the messages and now they're not on my phone. >> Mhm. >> She rang me back on my phone and I seen like he was on touch. >> Yeah. >> Text the woman said, "Hey, she She basically act like she was me." I know I should probably I swear she probably still has the messages actually. So, um she text me and she was like Well, she act like she was me and she said, "Hey, my wife kicked you out." She's not my wife, but she said that. I guess that's what she said. You want to come out and talk? So, she kicked me out and come meet me. Like she used basically her her her emotional the way she feels towards me to get her over here. >> Yeah. >> And when she got her over here, >> Hey, Carl. So, then she came over so she asked her to come over. She was pretending to be you. >> Yes, ma'am. >> And then what? >> She fought her. She had to cuz the way when I opened I literally woke up and was like all I >> When you say she fought her, like who? >> They had to fight her again the altercation cuz when my When I heard this, like I literally woke up and I'm like, "What the heck?" And all I hear is them yelling my mom and my sister and her, you know, like just like hyped. >> So, Ashley came here to your door because they took her phone, I guess. That she had They took her phone cuz I got to give it back to her. >> Oh, they took her phone? >> Yes, yeah. >> Okay. >> Cuz she was going to text um I guess her and me and >> Let me ask you this. Now, you said that she Antonella was took your phone and text Ashley from your phone? >> Yes, sir. >> Do you have those messages on your phone? >> No, I like when I go I don't You know what's crazy? My my boy was like my boy was like, "Yo, you should see if you have those messages because, you know, it and I was like, yeah. She was like, but when I go to look up her name and like I'm so serious. When I go to look up her name, like she took my phone. That's her. That's Ashley right there. Like I felt so bad, but when I go to look up her name, Ashley Annemarie like her messages are gone. >> Ashley, so it didn't she >> So, I go and go and press Ashley Annemarie and go to her messages, but >> They're gone. There's no messages. >> messages >> Can I Can Do you mind if I just look at it really quick? >> Uh so, did Did she message >> Yes. Right now, grabbing my keys. >> That's a whole I didn't do that. I don't >> Hold on, getting my [ __ ] there. I'll be there. Okay. Meet me in the bed. I don't want no problems, okay? Sending this too much. Around back like that way. >> Like I have a whole car. I see her with my vehicle. She parked it there. >> around back that way >> If you If you were to ask If she was around back, would it be that way? >> It has to be that. This sucks, man. >> I know. >> Is she hurt? >> I see her. >> Like real bad? So, >> Honestly, I'm I'm not going to make a show. I'm not going to go and yell. I'm not not going to go call her. I just just wanted to know. >> Well, yeah, we got a call from the hospital a while ago and she actually passed away from the >> No, stop playing with me, please. Please, stop playing me. Say it again. >> I'm so sorry about you, but do you know when they're coming in? >> They They're here? >> I haven't slept [clears throat] at all. >> Their supervisors just pulled them down to the office. So, they'll be right with you in 5 minutes. >> Okay. >> Uh do you want any water or anything like that? >> No, it's just that I haven't slept since last night. Like I've had a really long day and night. And I do understand this is voluntarily. So, I kind of like wanted to, you know >> Okay, yeah. Like I said, I'll I'll go see if they're good yet. >> Okay. >> Give one moment. >> Yeah, I'm so sorry. I just I don't want to be a pest. It's just really cold in here. I didn't expect it to be. >> Okay. I'll see if I can find something to keep you warm. >> Or if like it's going to be much longer, can I come back or something? >> I mean you just stay. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Is like I have to stay? >> Mhm. >> Okay. >> Okay. We'll be We'll be in a couple minutes. Talk to you. >> Hey, hello. Sorry it took us so long. I know you and I already met. This is Detective Oriya. >> Hi, nice to meet you. >> Nice to meet you. >> Yeah, I'm just trying to just play catch up right now. So, I apologize for the wait. >> No worries. >> Um I didn't get your name. What your name is? >> Antonetta Stevens. >> How do you spell that? >> A n t o n e t t a and Stevens with a v. >> Stevens with a v? >> Mhm. >> [snorts] >> What's your date of birth? >> And is my sister-in-law okay? >> Who I'm sorry, who's your sister-in-law? >> Janine. >> Janine? >> He He's just getting He's still getting caught up on everything. So, >> Yeah, like I said, he's just playing catch up. >> her mom's [clears throat] not here and you know, I don't really >> Yeah, she's okay. She's over there. >> Okay. >> She's She's a minor. >> She's over there. She's over there wasn't in the music. >> Okay. Um and you you stay at the address that you were at? >> So, like I said, he's still getting filled in on everything. I know you and I talked a little bit, but basically fiancé was cheating on her. >> Oh. >> And the other girl showed up. Some stuff happened, but he's going to be the lead detective, so he wants to get your side. I know you talked to some officers and stuff earlier. >> Yeah. >> Um so, that's why he's sitting here now and he's just he's going to kind of handle everything. >> Okay. >> But I just wanted to explain all that to you, okay? >> Yeah. >> And then because because we are in like our headquarters, we are in there's a situation, obviously it's serious. Um he does have to read you something, but it's just so we can get everything that's going on. >> And it's the same thing you always hear on TV if you are watch cops or any of those movies with the cops. This is this is your warnings, okay? So. >> Sure. >> All right. So, you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in court. You have the right to talk to a lawyer for advice before we ask you any questions and to have a lawyer with you during questioning. If you cannot afford a lawyer, one will be appointed for you before any questioning if you wish. If you decide to answer questions now without a lawyer present, you will still have the right to stop answering at any time. You also have the right to stop answering at any time until you talk to a lawyer. Do you understand each of these rights I have explained to you? >> Mhm. >> Is that a yes? >> Yeah, I do. >> Okay, sorry. >> No worries. >> Having these rights in mind, do you wish to talk to us now? >> Um well, I do want to speak with a lawyer just because of how sensitive the situation is. Um I I will say that, you know, I don't go out looking to harm anybody. Um that's not my intention. I do feel, you know, very remorseful about anything that has happened with that that young lady. Um I'll also say that, you know, it wasn't my intention to even get into an altercation with her today. Um she came over to my place of residence looking for my fiance. We argued. I was hit. We fought. Um I feel really bad, but you know, I really I'm I don't know. I'm just you know, it's just this is just too much. >> [sighs] >> You okay? >> No, I'm not. I'm just you know, I have kids. I I don't I feel I don't know how to feel, man. I've been going through too much. >> Okay. So, you want to talk to a lawyer. So, what we're going to do is we stop at that point. We don't talk. All right? So, we're going to head out of here, but we just need you to wait in here, okay? >> So, what's going to happen now? >> Um I'm not sure yet. It's going to be up to the detective or I we still have a few more things we have to do, but if you need anything just knock on the door, okay? >> Okay. >> All right. >> So, will I be able to call my mom or anything? >> We'll we'll get to that, yeah. >> Okay. >> Antonette's account takes less than a minute. Ashley came to her home looking for her fiance. They argued, she was hit, they fought. But earlier that night Daniel had given detectives a very different picture of how Ashley got there. He said that while he slept, Antonette took his phone, messaged Ashley as if she were him, asked her to come over, and then deleted the messages. And the phone video does not begin at her door. It begins with the person filming walking the complex asking where she is. >> Hey! At least I believe it's hot in here, right? You look comfy. Keysha right here for me? >> Keysha is dirty. >> Why is she dirty at? I swear I swear it was just >> Girl, you saying stuff. >> [laughter] >> I know I met you at at the your apartment. I'm Detective Carter. This is Detective Mariah. He's still trying to like get filled in on everything. So, um basically her sister-in-law, there was a situation with her, her brother. There's a whole situation, whatever. We just got through talking to Antoinette. Um so, basically we just got to get your side now. Um because you are in here, he has to read some stuff to you. Um so, he's he's going to be the lead detective. So, he's going to do most of the talking, but I'm just in here cuz I'm kind of familiar with it, but I'm here, too, so. >> Yeah, this is Detective Mariah. Um what's your first name again? >> Janie. >> Janie, how do you spell that? >> J A N I N E. >> And last name? >> Gonzalez. What is the name? >> Okay. Um but yeah, so I just got to read you your rights cuz we're here at the police station. It's It's something you always hear on TV and cops and in the movies. I'm sure you heard it a million times. >> Mhm. >> All right, so. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in court. You have the right to talk to a lawyer for advice before we ask you any questions and to have a lawyer with you during questioning. You cannot afford a lawyer, one will be appointed for you before any questioning if you wish. If you decide to answer questions now without a lawyer present, you will still have the right to stop answering at any time. You also have the right to stop answering at any time until you talk to a lawyer. Do you understand each of these rights I explained to you? >> Mhm. >> And having these rights in mind, in mind, do you wish to talk to us now? >> Yeah. >> Yes? Um yeah, so just just go through basically cuz I wasn't there and I'm I'm playing catch-up basically. So, what happened? >> So, like Let me start to where it lead it. >> Okay. >> So, it all Okay, so like since I've been down here they they haven't been on good terms. So, you know, arguments back-to-back. So, like we just came back from Florida like last month or so from her mom's wedding and [clears throat] we left on bad terms with everybody cuz my brother had gotten to a you know, incident with her stepdad. So, ever since that happened and we left Florida it just been rocky. Rocky areas, just been worse than arguments and [ __ ] so Yeah. Sorry, I just cut you. >> You're fine. Go ahead. >> [laughter] >> So, like, you know, they're arguing or whatever. So my brother him being a man cheats. Like always, you know, he's feeling Western he thinks it's okay to cheat, so you know. He tells me so he tells me who he's cheating with and stuff. Now, me and my step-sister I mean, not my step-sister, my sister-in-law we're very close, like so close that you don't understand. Like she's more of a sister to me than my brother's a brother to me, you know? >> Okay. >> So, like we're very close. So, once he told me I was just like, "Ooh, I got to tell her." >> [laughter] >> It's girl code. >> Yes, right? So, especially when right after he told her after he told me what he what he was doing, he wanted to do it with her. So, I was just like, "Mhm, I'm about to tell her." So, she won't do it with her. So I let a few days go by cuz I wasn't sure. I didn't want to stir up the pot cuz I already know they have problems. So, I'm like, "Maybe it'll come to light before I have to say anything." Obviously, it did, but I still told her. So 2 days prior before this day, um we were just chilling. She was working. And Daniel had did something to her to make her upset. So, we were talking or whatever. And I was just like, "Oh, I forgot to tell you." No, I didn't forget, but that's what I said. So, I was like, um told her what happened. He explained what he did or whatever. She's like, "Oh, really?" She was upset or whatever. I'm like, "Don't tell Daniel cuz he's going to be mad at me." Okay, so after that, um he explained how the girl looked to me, though. And, you know, curly hair and pretty and skinny girl. So, I was like, "Uh-huh." So, then I explained it to Neda. So, the next day after that, we went to the store. Last night. Last night. We went to the store last night, and we were walking to QuickTrip. QuickTrip is right there, you know. >> [laughter] >> Okay, so we walked to QuickTrip. As we were walking to QuickTrip, both of them were walking together from QuickTrip. So, they're just now leaving, and we're just now coming. So, after Neda is like, "Is that Daniel walking?" So, then she runs there and like, "Who is this?" She's like, "Oh, it's my recruit or whatever." Mind you, before we walked to QuickTrip, we asked him, "When you go on your break, can you take us to the store?" He said he couldn't leave on his break. So, when we saw them walking, it was like, "You just said you couldn't leave on your break. Now you're walking with her to the store." Mhm. So, so she's upset now. "You couldn't take me to the store, and now you're walking with the girl that you just explained to me how she looked, and she fits the description." So, you know, she's upset. Big argument outside. So, we finally got her to calm down. We went inside the car. And then oh, when when that happened, she she was like she was like oh, basically trying to argue with Antonella cuz you know how Antonella acts towards so, you know, she didn't want to seem a little soft in front of her brother so, you know, arguing. And then she walked away. I went to her and I was just like listen, the problem I explained the I explained to her the problem cuz I guess she was I don't know if she was his manager or the co-worker. I don't know. But I explained to her the problem or whatever and I let him know like that's my brother and um you're basically the the you fit the description of the girl that he was cheating on with her with so, yeah, that's why it's a problem now. And then she's like oh, what that got to do with me? I don't know if she was she was like [ __ ] my brother with me now. So, um after that, the um he went home. They were very good. They didn't go to sleep till like a good 10:00 a.m. in the morning. So, after that, she's kicking Daniel out or whatever. She don't want to live by him no more. She said he going to leave or she's going to leave and you know, she got to leave with the kids and everything. So, it makes sense if he just left. So, he's getting kicked out or whatever and then I guess I guess she was coming to see him. He's getting kicked out. I don't know what them messages. I'm not sure what was said. But I guess she was coming to see him cuz he's getting kicked out. And Antonella saw them messages. So, she decided like yeah, now she's about to come see you. Now I'm about to beat her up cuz I just you you just saved me from her the other day. Now, you know that's how it was. So, she's coming. So, it's Netta and me, we go to we go and she comes to the house, you know, big fight. Big fight. So, uh after the fight, um we took her phone. We were going to call her husband to let her know that, you know, just just there's some violence. We were just like, you know what it is, Netta, all that. She woke up Daniel. Daniel was Daniel was like, "What the fuck?" So, then um Oh, okay. So, we closed the door. She starts banging on the door like crazy cuz, you know, we got her phone. She wants her phone back. So, then we give her her phone back and then I don't know what the hell [clears throat] happened after. Uh she gave her her phone back literally like she left right after. I I don't know what I don't know how she left. Like, I wasn't watching after that cuz my brother was mad as hell and you know, he don't want me in the business. I was already in it too much. So, he's like on my ass. So, I was just like, "Okay." So, I don't know what happened after she left, but literally right after she left, a third party called the police. They came, you know, made a report. And then after that, it was over or whatever. And then just know you guys came. Yeah, that's that's all I know. >> When you guys uh fought, how long did that fight last? >> Uh 2 2 minutes. >> Okay. Where was she I know you said you you said earlier she came looking for him. >> She She came because he was moving. He was getting kicked out and she wanted to be a little lighter. >> Mhm. [clears throat] >> When she know she was searching and she got a husband at home with girl. >> I know she's breaking up a happy home. But where was she at? Like >> No, she has a husband as well. >> Yeah, I know. But where was she at? >> Um what do you mean? >> You said she came and looked for him. Where was she at? How did y'all How did y'all make contact with her? >> Through messages. Like just a Like you know we seen her. >> Where did you meet up? >> She was in our complex. I guess she lives like right near us. >> Mhm. >> Like I think like there's like two sides of the complex. You know that hill? >> Yeah. >> It goes around and like when it goes up and around there's another complex that looks just like the same. >> So did she knock on the door at first or you guys just saw her outside? >> Outside. She ain't She didn't knock. She didn't get the chance to. >> Okay. >> Cuz like oh yeah, got this [ __ ] coming. I'm about to beat her up. So yeah. >> Did you guys start yelling at her before you guys approached her or how that go down? >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Tell us about that. >> It wasn't really a [ __ ] you. It was like Yeah, you came to see my [ __ ] >> And then? It was just fighting after that. >> She knew who it was cuz she she got ready to, you know. And then it was just fighting. >> Who was fighting? >> Um the girl in the middle. >> Everybody? >> No. >> Girl, you didn't get in there? >> No. >> Yeah. >> Of course you did. I know you did. >> Just just just a little bit. >> You got in there cuz cuz that's that's like you said that's your homegirl. >> Yeah, that's just you know. >> Tell me about that. How did that happen? >> I didn't I didn't go I didn't go crazy though cuz she's small as hell. Like >> Mhm. >> You're you're enough already. I don't need to be punch her, drag her. I don't need to do all that. I'm good. Yeah, I get my little hit in and then that's it. You know what I'm saying? >> Where'd you get it in at? >> Um I don't know. I know I know I hit her though. Like in the beginning, she got on the floor and I kind of like dragged her just a little bit. >> Just a little bit. >> And then and then I and then I stopped. I was like >> It's hard. Your adrenaline's going, you know, you got to go. >> Yeah. I was like, "Okay, let me stop." And then they were just fighting. And yeah. It was just just a little just a little hit. So, I didn't really fight her. That's just crazy. >> What made it stop? >> Uh I don't know. It's just I don't know. That's a weird question. I don't even know what happened. >> Like was she like was she saying anything or Ashley, I mean. >> Was she She was just I never I never out of all fights I've been in, I never saw somebody talk [ __ ] during a fight like why are you going to be up talking [ __ ] >> Mhm. >> I never never was like that. >> What was she saying? >> She was just like She was just, you know, [ __ ] talking. "Oh, your [ __ ] doesn't want you. That's why he's over here just just [ __ ] like that." I don't >> about. >> And then like It was just such a weird fight. Like she was just like She just was kept on talking. Then she was like, "Aren't you his sister?" And it was just laughing all types of [ __ ] It was just weird. She was She was a weird person. Never. I was like, "Okay." But yeah. >> So, how did you guys get her phone? >> Um, she When when we was fighting, she had her phone in her hand. >> Mhm. I don't know who poses up with their phone in their hand. If I'm about to fight, I'm dropping I'm dropping everything. >> Mhm. >> She was doing that though. >> Mhm. >> And then it was on the floor. She was like, "Grab the phone." I grabbed it. And then yeah, that was in our >> You said she said grab the phone? >> Yeah. >> Ashley and I said grab the phone? >> Yeah, I grabbed it. >> Okay. >> Was she was talking back while she was getting beat up? Like how that make you feel? With the stuff that she was saying. >> Like I didn't care. >> She was angry. She was mad. >> Cuz like She was Listen, I I don't get bothered by by people who talk stuff. You got to like really do something to me, you know? >> But she was talking about your brother, though, and your sister. >> Yeah, but that's just like, so like, you >> So, you weren't mad? You were just not so much as like, "Whatever." >> Yeah, I was I can't be that mad, now. Come on. She knew what it was. Every If you're going to talk [ __ ] regardless, it's a fight. What do you expect? So. I was just like, "Go ahead." I've been in I've been in multiple fights. Big fights ever since I was born. You know? >> Mhm. >> So, yeah, I really didn't I I wasn't getting angry over her talking [ __ ] That was the kid I would have beat up. >> [laughter] >> Right after. Nah. I would still >> So, you were just standing over them whilst they were fighting? >> Yeah, I'm just like, "What the fuck?" But then I walked away with Daniel. He was mad as hell. He He's like I said, every time I just meet Daniel in the middle of this period, he's angry. I don't got time for him. >> But he was sleeping when the fight was happening outside, right? Cuz you said that she woke him up. >> Yes, she did. >> By she, you mean Ashley, right? >> Uh-uh. >> [clears throat] >> Who woke Who woke Daniel up? >> She did. Um >> Who's she? >> Antoinette. >> Okay. So, you guys were outside fighting? >> No. We woke him up when Ash when we knew what Ashley was coming. And then we was like, "Yeah, like she's about to get beat the [ __ ] up cuz now you going to get your ass beat. She going to go get her to come save you? Like, who is she?" >> Mhm. >> You haven't been to college for how long? Like, that was weird. So, yeah. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> Who was um How did you guys How did you guys find the messages again? >> His phone. >> Okay. Did you find it or did she find it? >> She found it. >> Antoinette? >> Mhm. >> Okay. How did she like Where were you at? Did you come How did that happen? >> Um she came to me with reading the messages. I was like, "Yeah, that's the girl that's the the girl we just saw." Yeah. Yeah. >> Did you guys text her? >> Mhm. >> What do you mean? >> Did you guys send messages to her? >> No, we don't got her number. >> No, I mean from his phone. >> Oh, from his phone? >> Mhm. >> No, I don't think so. No. >> Okay. >> Mhm. >> You sure? >> Yeah. >> Cuz you you messed up your story a little bit. I already read the messages. You messed up a little bit. >> What was the messages? >> He wasn't getting kicked out. >> Oh, yes, he was. >> Mhm. >> [clears throat] >> I don't know. What the hell? I I did it. >> [clears throat] >> I only saw the messages where he was cheating. So, I'm not sure if anybody texted her. >> Are you sure? >> You know? On it, the voice closest to the camera tells Ashley that Daniel said she could come out and fight her and repeats again and again, "I will murder you." Then the demand turns to Ashley's phone, "We jump her for the phone." And in the video's final seconds, that voice appears to call out to Daniel that she used his phone to write to Ashley and that she recorded what followed. >> We'll um we'll ask the officer transporting, but he he might just want to just go and drop you guys off and >> Oh, so where is my sister-in-law going?
