This is Marne Yang. On Thursday, October 4th, 2007, 42-year-old Ron Reutder was killed inside her condominium in Deerfield, Illinois, north of Chicago. Rooney was more than 7 months pregnant. Her unborn daughter had already been named Skyler Rainey. The child's father was former Chicago Bears player Shawn Gail. Rooney and Gail had been involved for many years. Yang also had a business and intimate relationship with him. In the interview you are about to watch, detectives are not yet confronting Young with the evidence that would emerge later. This is an early voluntary interview. Their approach is calm and conversational, but the account still matters. Young describes her relationship with Gail, what she knew about Rooney and the pregnancy, where she says she was the night before the killing, and what she says happened during the crucial hours the following morning. The detectives allow her to supply names, times, calls, and other details that can be checked after she leaves the room. This is the story Marne Young gave investigators before she knew where the investigation would lead. >> Can we get you something offered yet? >> Water coffee, >> are you? Yeah. Not me. I need one in the afternoon, too. >> I'm trying to switch to tea. Yeah, >> that's what I think. That'd be a good idea. >> Just so you know, I don't know if you're familiar with police work or what type of, you know, investigations that we do. Um, we were we're with Lake County Major Crime Task Force. So, we as a we're officers from detectives from other agencies. So, we do nothing but cases in Lake County. >> Okay. >> So, they have procedures as far as what we do as far as intelligence sheets. So, he's going to ask you, Chuck's going to ask you some basic questions about who you are, where you live, stuff like that. >> Um, it's strictly just intelligence. It means nothing. It doesn't list you as a suspect witness. It's just you're someone that we spoke to in this case. >> You know, during the whole course of the investigation, you we talked to, you know, 100 people, just information so we know if we need to contact them again, you know, that type of thing. There's a bunch of questions and some of them are not relevant, but uh >> Okay. Okay. Your first name is Is it M A R N I? >> Correct. >> Okay. >> That's your full name? >> Mhm. >> Okay. And you have a middle name? >> K. K A Y. >> And your last name? >> Y A N G. >> Any other names? >> A real estate broker? I do know somewhere. I work myself. >> What's business? >> It's horrible. Well, sorry. I'm going to get a better dollar lick. But >> I still think predict 12 months before it starts to turn around. I haven't seen the market as far as foreclosures and everything. I've seen it going to be at least 24 to 36 months. >> Chicago everywhere. Same >> everywhere. It's pretty much >> what uh >> you have an infinity. >> What year is he to 2001? >> Infinity. or anything. >> Um, give you a card that >> um associates or anybody that you're really close to or best friend in case emergency or anything. >> My kids take a time like all the friends and everything else. >> Yeah. Well, it's all their friends now. >> Obviously, no game affiliation. How much history you've been around? >> No. be mom's gang. >> Really? >> Okay. Um, just a couple things [snorts] because the unit evolved in 1992 and there was some litigation. I wasn't arrested ever. I wasn't around when this happened. There was a police officer that was in this unit that got sued. Right. So, we have a policy requirement regardless of who we are. where you fit in the equation and you go to a police station and talk to the cops we measure your grand are >> but it's a formality that I tell you okay >> okay okay and you can make it high if you question feel free to ask okay >> okay >> it's just it's basically have to remain silent anything you say can use against law the right to ask attorney if you attorney will be plenty of representation if you wish okay so just basically cuz we run in a situation where people just you know that along with us and they say something that all of a sudden help get some some crime not we're suburban department force and our bosses are pretty particular on obviously paperwork and things like that so they say anybody talk they come down police station you go to their house just talk to them on the street their rights you know all the stuff that's in the paper and everything else they would rather just be safe and sorry so that's so >> okay >> okay that's it don't you don't realize just my house I don't know who we are anything about anything like that so now we've gotten past that and you understand everything. Correct. >> Um, basically I just want to find out your association with Sean. They know Sean when you first met Sean. >> I've known him for about 6 years. >> Okay. Um, we met at a convention. It was about 6 years ago. >> Okay. >> Um, I happened to mention that I was a real estate broker at the time and um, he asked me what kind of property do you do you sell real estate? Everything res everything. I gave him my card. >> What um, what kind of was it? Um, it was the bears kitchen. >> Okay. I mean, was he still a player then? Not being not >> No, he was. >> So, he had boo or something or was he an autograph? >> He was kind of wandering around. >> You guys just did you just have some chit chat or something? >> Yeah, we were chatting. >> Okay. So, you gave your card. Sorry. >> I gave my card and um told him that if he was looking for real estate, he gave me a call. >> Okay. >> And then as far as the relationship's been over the last six years, is it is it more business? Is it business friends? I mean, >> how you describe? >> I would say it's a combination of both. >> Okay. >> Okay. We currently have a um a property a project that we're working on um that was purchased in August. >> So, um I both >> um an old warehouse property we're going to try and turn into. Well, like I said, >> now I mean how would you characterize how you talk to Sean? I mean, once a week. >> Really? It depends. It depends on, you know, what I got going on as far as the project goes. If there are um, you know, contractors that need to be talked to or whatever. I know him through a couple builders that um, I tried to get to put together the project and he's like, "Well, I don't want this guy. I don't like that guy." And meanwhile I'm running around um you know just sample points and things. A lot of I'll keep a lot of appointments for him so he doesn't have to go and then you know just surprise him afterwards any decisions that need to be made or something like that. A lot of it depends on where we're at with business and stuff. >> I mean do you guys do you guys talk outside those? I mean sure. >> Okay. I mean you got got count you guys dinner together before? I mean >> um we have dinner >> social event stuff like that. >> Yeah. Well, you know what? He's not like this huge social butterfly. He's not out and about a lot. So, you know, call and say, "Why don't we go here? Why don't we go there?" >> He's not been there. Dinner, you know, >> you know, as you know, we're talking this not too many people, >> right? They don't, right? Um, and obviously it was, you know, Sean's girlfriend or, you know, he she was pregnant with his baby and they were tripping and this happened. So, one of the things we also want to talk to you about is your relationship with him, how you know, how you've known him. How personal, you know, you know him. Um, we know that there was some issues and problems that he had with a a former girlfriend uh that was sent some letters and that type of thing. Were you involved in I know that your name was on some of the letters and it's taking us a while to get through a lot of got a lot of associates, a lot of friends, female friends also because this was someone that's close to him and we're all possibilities open. Of course, we look at the possibility of something to do with because of his relationship with her. So when you look at this other girl and the letters and all this other stuff that came in kind of trying to get an idea, you know, talking to someone that has had close relationships with them that maybe you know other person would look you and you're threatening or you know would >> I received I did receive those letters when they came out. Um >> you still have any of this? >> No. You know it was like ridiculous. >> Um >> I know that he was he was pretty upset. >> Mhm. >> Um >> how did you feel about the threat? I mean, did you >> like the first round of letters that went out I didn't really think threatening. I just thought they were kind of stupid. >> Um there was a second round of letters that went out that I thought was a little bit more um like I was the same person writing it. He he identified right away who was he said that he said that it was um that there were that he knew it was her because there were certain things that were in the letters >> that nobody else but her knew and nobody else but her know. So he pretty much identified right away who was. Um the second round letters went out I thought was kind of ridiculous. >> Now when you second round um were these all in the mail? >> These were all in the mail. >> Okay. So you received letters and envelopes. Was there anything else in the letters? Wasn't photos packages or anything package? Anything like that? >> The first? >> Yeah, I do remember cuz the first letters out were um it was a big thick packet >> and it [clears throat] was like copies of emails that I don't know have gone between the two of them and some other stuff. And it was basically just um saying that he was seeing all these other women. I forget there was a list like 20 or something that he was seeing all the other women and um you know she found out that he was seeing all the other women and she thinks everybody should know about it like all right fine. Um >> there was a second round of letters that went out that was like it was almost like her tone had changed and had become um almost like taunting and she included a picture of herself um in the letter. She a nice young lady. She really was and she was kind of like saying >> in the second letter. Yes, this is in the second letter. She was kind of like saying that um like this is me and I'm so beautiful and if you could have me why would you all love you? >> So um I also received a kind of strange um it was just written in an envelope just like an empty blank envelope. >> Somebody had written on there >> you will get yours and dropped it by the garage. I called like what is this? and he's like, "Well, you know, can you fix it to her?" So, I sent it in, emailed it to him. Um, it wasn't signed. He never told, he never came and told. And I just sent it to him. He never came back and told me I recognize handwriting or I don't recognize the handwriting. He never said anything else about it. Um, and we talked about it later and I said, you know, I said, I have no way of knowing whether that came from her and she knows where I live. Obviously, it was just these. Um or the other thing too is you know I have three kids and I have two of them are they're twins are teenagers and we live block from school and I have really good kids. They're not involved in anything. They don't get in trouble. They don't smoke. They don't they don't do any of that stuff. Um you know they good grades but I can't speak and I know that you know all the friends that they bring into the house are good kids also. I have no problem with their friends but I can't speak for anyone else school. >> Mhm. or social. >> So I'm thinking to myself now, okay, is this not for me or you know, my daughter pissed me off. >> When was it? What what >> was he like? >> 2006. It was last year. >> It was It had to be last year. It was last year. >> Okay. Summer time where you remember? >> Um >> did you? >> No, I didn't. But um maybe I don't know. Like I said, I know. >> We have some stuff. We're just trying to collect as much as we can so we can take a look at It had to be fall because I remember I noticed I got out of the car and I went to walk around the back of it because Chicago the garage are all you have to come around the alley going in your house. Um I remember noticing it there because they're all leaves on the ground and we were reaching and picking up out of leaves something that had probably followed last year. >> Okay. Now these the people got the letters you know you said there's a long list of them. >> There's two basic categories. One's a category people have had intimate relationship with and there's another category of people that have not >> right. >> I know it's personal question but it's kind of >> I know the thing is is that you know we're thinking about you and in terms of the whole investigation >> are you one that fallen in the relationship? >> Okay. Okay. That's fair enough. I mean Sean's a adult and you know what I mean it's not like he's a married man or anything and you guys know person relationship. He's obviously other women that he sees >> between you and him. >> Yeah. And it's obvious he's obviously other than he's sees if you read a letter and um you know I got it's not >> it's just you guys are friends and on a regular basis we say >> yeah that's fine now obviously but you know right now I think needs more than anything else is just a friend we're also like I said business so >> yeah well we I mean we've just run into we've talked to over hundreds of people now this morning and some people are very offended that we have assets stuff but >> no I mean >> we got we I know. Not only that, but >> it's not going anywhere as far as he knows my kids. He knows my mom. He knows my dad. >> No, we're not. And you know what? Like you said, he's not married. You're not married. No. You know, we're trying to find >> No, I know. But from my point of view, it's like, okay, they're probably going to ask, but I'm going to volunteer information. So, I mean, I'm going to with that. So, >> yeah. >> Did you besides besides letters, did you ever get any like electronic stuff, emails? Did you ever get phone calls? Did you also were suspicious or did your kids ever answer phone? >> Yes or no? Okay, this was something else. Um I did not my house phone but my cell phone. I would get numerous hang calls for a while. I was in, you know, >> was it during the same time? during the same time period or just after and um you know come across the phone anonymous I had told you know about it and but I also the same thing I had two teenagers in the house their friend playing jokes and he said well on your cell phone you know and I told I said my children don't I don't allow them to have cell phones they daughter just her cell phone now she for herself um but because of the fact that my kids never had cell phones my cell phone is where their friends call you know you know other than >> know what's well, where they're at and what they're doing. So, but I, you know, so I didn't think it was overly strange that I was getting hate calls on cell. >> Okay. All their friends, you know, is Emma with you? Is Andrew with you? Um, and as far as electronic stuff, the only I never got any strange emails, I um couple months ago, I'm thinking it had to be like September cuz I think it was right when Sean came back from London. um he had a charity motorcycle ride that he was supposed to be um doing and the I have group of folks that I ride with um and the guy that's kind of loosely in charge of the group he's responsible for sending out emails like random >> and um he he's responsible he's responsible for sending the emails and letting everybody know if we're meeting we're meeting when the rides are and um I had a back injury and couldn't go on that ride but I remember being notified of it. >> Mhm. There was a I guess there was some kind of email that went out from some woman claiming to be a friend or a coworker or something of this woman that he ordered protection against um saying that he's sleeping with a woman that organized a ride. >> Um that she felt that she wanted to let everybody know like what a huh you didn't ride. No no no. It was some No, it was some um charity organization called hand. It was um And I had actually gotten it second hand after somebody had forward it to the guy that organizes our group. >> You try to get the first one. It was just a forwarded. >> I don't think I don't think so because the second one had come along with like a little disclaimer by our ride organizer saying like don't pay attention to this baloney. Let's go out and support this charity cause. 25 bucks the time you go on the strike. It cost you you pay and all the money goes to charity. Um I remember that he had said don't pay attention to this ridiculousness and let's come out and support this anyways. So I don't I don't remember if I had first or not. I don't think I did. No. >> Okay. Do you know the woman's name speaking up her name? >> The woman speaking up the caused. >> Did talk to you about her at all? I mean, did he tell you? What did he tell you about her? I mean, obviously, when you got your letter stuff, you said ridiculous. What was your reaction? Did you get a phone? What is this? >> He told me ahead of time, warning that it was public. >> Okay. He warned me ahead of time. Let me know that it was public. >> Mhm. >> So, and it was a big surprise. >> You got it. Then, what was your reaction? >> He had prepared me for some of it. Okay. >> You know, but I I did call him and I was like, "Well, I got to tell you." Like, I'm not happy about this. >> Um, he was like, he's like, "We discussed this, talked about it." Mhm. >> And uh I was like I didn't think it was never speech again. Relax. I said I'm really happy about it. Now I think one of the things that I told him that bothered me the most about it >> was you know not so much that he was seeing other women. It's like fine. You know we kind of know that right? I don't need shoved down my throat but you kind of know. >> The thing that bothered me the most was the fact that like I don't even know who the woman is and she's kind of she knows where I live. I'm a singer. >> Do you give any cuz obviously my concern if I were you be like well how she gets information on me cuz then you're like what kind of wack are you hanging out with? Well, yeah. Well, as a matter of fact, I think I cracked a joke about it at one point. He didn't think it was very funny. Okay. I think I said to him something along the lines of like, "Geez, what the heck did you do to this? His perhaps bad." And he didn't think that was funny at all. >> Did he answer it? >> Oh, he snapped at He was like, "What are you talking about? What do you mean by that?" >> Did he say why she was doing it? I mean, gave you the feel. >> He didn't really He didn't really go into that very much as far as why she was doing it. Um, it was more or less just explaining uh the fact that he had been seeing her and that it ended and that I guess she would take very well. So, >> what type of relationship he had with her as far as how they met, where they met? >> No, he didn't give any of those details. I didn't ask, you know. I mean, I consider that to be like maybe. >> Um, >> well, why I ask though is that in all fairness to you, I mean, the one being the brunt of these harassing emails mean there's got to be a concern for your safety and know just >> um he told me the information he gave me at the time, you know, was he told me where she worked. He didn't tell me where he had met her. I have no idea to this day. Um, the only place in my mind was at that point, number one, I didn't really find the letters, at least in the beginning, I didn't find the letters all that threatening. I found them stupid and I found them annoying. Okay. >> More childish or like mature and it's like, you know, why do I have to deal with this now? And >> this is something, you know, I was a year ago, 2 years ago, my 14. >> Okay. Um, so I didn't really find that threatening. I found them like more annoying than anything else. And like I thought this joke one day I was like, "Gez, what did you do to piss her off so bad?" Um, but as far as receiving the brunt of them, I don't, you know, I receive the letter twice and I got that envelope dropped in my alley or whatever, but other than that, you know, like for me, I don't know. Hang up calls again. That could be coming for her or is it a bunch of teenagers around? No, >> you said it was your cell phone, right? >> Yeah, it was on my cell phone. >> That could be kids, too, >> right? Cuz I said my daughter's friends all know they're looking for her. They always call my phone for her. So, I couldn't, you know, I couldn't really come forward and say this is her doing this. I can't really put it on her. I didn't know. >> Has he told you what's going on or what's happened with this girl or she's still in the country in the country? >> Well, I read the newspapers. Apparently, she married and married someone else. I'm pregnant. Okay. But again, and this is one of the things that I talked to Sean about. How can you believe everything that you read in the newspapers? I'm sure there's a lot that's not being said. I'm sure there's a lot that's probably being misreported. >> You know, you know how media can be a lot, >> right? So, you know, in in wanting to decide what I can leave and what I can't, you know, I don't know >> of um of the people on these letters and I don't know if like you know your relationship with John, your association with him or any other other friends. Uh did you know any anybody on that list or any one of them >> and did you ever make contact with any of them ever? Not that I >> that's nobody ever nobody ever called you them call you cuz anybody you know we're just trying to find out was any people on here you know mad say you want to call that person find out because some of the letters had phone numbers some just had some of the people just had names you know what I mean so none of them are contacted you >> none of them contacted me other like I said hang calls that I get none of them contacted me um you know so I don't know as far as them contacting each other or whatever I have I have no idea and he's never that I know of I've never come in contact with anyone, you know? I mean, like he never looked at me and said, "You did this so and so." >> I don't think that he would be that classless. He doesn't mean >> they were all of all the I mean, >> he managed to keep >> he really was seeing as many women as said he was. He sure managed to keep them all >> covering a different compartment. >> Oh, yeah. >> Did um did you know or you stand his relationship with Victor Brown? >> Didn't know the extent of the relationship. Um, I know that he had told me over the summer that it was late summer. I know he had told me that um he was uh he had gotten somebody pregnant >> and that >> remember exactly what he told you. >> It was over the summer. I mean we had gone out we were out to lunch. I remember out lunch and we were coming back from an appointment and it was before we bought it was before we closed on the property. So it hit the end of July August. Okay. Um he had mentioned that he had gotten somebody pregnant. Um he actually made it sound like it was somebody that he had a briefing with and that >> heard something happened. >> Well, yeah. And he actually he actually said that um he he didn't come out and say it. He made it sound like she had already had the kid and come back after him with hand out for child support. Maybe I'm just misreading. I mean he said or >> you know maybe I'm just misreading what he said like I remember I asked him I was like well are we are we happy about this and he goes oh no no he goes not at all >> I said okay I see you know cuz I am you know I I'm listening what he's saying he said he said I made it clear to the other party is how he referred he didn't even say this he just said I made it clear to the other party that um that I'm not that I will take care of my responsibility in this matter but that I'm not going to allow it to affect my life as he said. Um >> what do you mean by that? What do you explain? >> Didn't really explain. He just, you know, I told and it was that time that I kind of gave a dose of reality, you know. I was like, well, let me tell you something. I have three children. It's that simple. >> Um >> because he didn't have any other >> No, not that I um not that. I mean, like take a look and see. But I mean, you know, I mean, you got kids, you know, and you know, once you have kids, your priorities change, your life changes, you become more mature in positive ways. He's 40ome years old. 45 years old, he's never had that. So, he's still living like he's well without making not it's choice player. >> Yeah. So, and I had, you know, and I think maybe the reason that I had thought that this is someone that Oh, I remember what he said. The reason I thought it was someone that he had like that she had had a kid already is because he said to me, he said, "I didn't find out about this until way late in game is what he said." >> She was >> like she already had a kid and it come back. I mean, that's the way I took it maybe, you know. Um, >> I never said she had baby was a boy or girl or anything like that. Just you thought it was >> something that came back at him or whatever. >> Yeah. So, I mean, it was my interpretation as the boy said. So, you know, I knew um he had gotten somebody pregnant, but he just kind of made it seem like, you know, this is just another check I'm going to have, right? >> Summer time. >> Yeah, it was like a summer. >> No, this obviously this happened October 4th. >> She was and um so from summer to October, did you ever have a conversation about this child or this person that this other person was pregnant or you bring up? >> He never brought up again. All I said to him at time we had conversation. All I said to him was um okay. you know, cuz I said in mind, you know, the way he brought it across to me was I'm just there's another I'm going to have to write every month. Um, >> was he kind of was he kind of guy that kind of like you said, you guys are close your friends. You keep certain things close to us like certain feelings or maybe obviously, you know, he's not talking about one woman another. Okay. when those letters started to go out um and he had no choice but to give me a heads up that I should be expecting that might in the mail. Um >> it's called change control. >> Exactly. I had said to him um really and was like what was this you know what was your relationship with when she being you know his response was come on you know this is not a magous relationship and you know you know you know that I see other people or whatever. I was like, "Okay, >> how did I just curious? How did you he be a dad? I mean, how do you feel about the whole thing? >> How do you feel like relationship was obvious? >> As far as having emotional >> did he minimize it?" >> Obviously, now that I know you know that there was something more going on here, obviously I think he minimized it. >> Now you you were saying you read the papers. What as far as relationship with girl, do you understand? Did have you talked about it since with her? when we talked about it, I asked him um you know said look there are certain aspects of this that I have to deal with also and you know it's exactly what I said to him said because of the fact that you never know what to believe about what's in the newspaper as opposed to you know you told me said you know aside from what you told me compared when I'm reading newspaper I said where's the truth does it by someone in the middle or you know what as far as the extent of your involvement with her that's all I said was it like somewhere in the middle. That's what he said. So I mean I really don't know what to believe, >> you know. >> Well, I guess on that kind of along that same line, I mean looking at your relationship with him, how you want to address it and how did he how do you feel he treated you in the thing? Was he the verbally controlling type of individual? I mean kind of person >> I don't think he was verbally controlling. I think that he holds a lot of things close to his chest. Um, >> sounds like a double male. >> Yeah. You know, I'll come back in my cave and when I feel like it. >> Um, >> as far as asking him to open up, um, be more forthcoming with things. I never pressured him. I, you know what, I will let him, and this is kind of tone for our entire relationship. Okay. I will let him share what he wants to share. I will make my own observations based on what I see and decide from there if what he's telling is truth or not. Um, in other words, the truth come out in it. Okay. So, I don't think he's overly controlling. I just think he's um, >> how would you describe I mean, how is he with you? I mean, what type of, you know, person is as far as in a relationship? I mean, is he ever verbally abused to you? >> No. >> Uh, physically? >> No. >> I don't think I don't think he's got an aggressive bone in his body. I will tell you that much. Okay. I one of the things that strikes me about him is he's very um I almost want to say like accepting um like when things go wrong whether it be with business or personal he's the kind of person that will just kind of hang his head and go you know well this is what it is >> right >> when when he told you about this other person that's you know late in the game >> new revelation about having a baby >> and you said oh you know he wasn't happy and we say oh not happy I mean to the point where you was really pissing him off. I see what you're asking. >> I'm just trying to ask you your opinion. >> The way it struck me at the time and I thought out it afterwards as well. Um again just a very kind of like resigned. That's what I'm looking for. Just very resigned to it was his um really entire attitude. >> So how well with OB is >> so based on that from point he's the news to you to point that Ryan's murdered >> how is his attitude? And again, I don't you know, you got Tommy. I don't often you saw him in between those the the time, but >> did he add to change a little bit as far as excited about being a dad? Was he still >> He never brought it up again. Okay. >> He he never mentioned again, never brought it up again. He made the statement to me that he's already made it clear to the other party that um although take care of his responsibility in the matter um that he was not going to allow it to affect his life, >> change liv. And then you thought you said you thought it was kind of like it. I just went off and okay, you know, he'll open up and share things when he's ready. I've never really had to press him stuff. Okay. I found that if I press him, what he'll do is he'll be intentionally ambiguous, get ambiguous answers, >> but if I sit and I let him come on his own when he's ready to talk about stuff, he'll be more um that has really been the um policy I found in our relationship and it's worked, you know, pretty well. Um, I will say that I kind of was thinking and I I chucked to myself a little bit. He told me I was like I was like maybe being a parent isn't maybe such a bad thing for him, >> right? >> You know, was kind of one of the thoughts was crawling around back. >> Like I said, I've I have three children. >> I I had my twins when I twins. >> I had my twins when I was 21 and um you know, I know I know how it changed me. So, you know, I had it going around back. I was like, you know, maybe maybe parenthood actually will make you cry a little bit >> and slow down, you know, basically. >> When um when did you find out about what happened to her? >> It was the day of. >> Okay. >> Here, hold on. >> Okay. >> Just break on that. >> To attend what we just discussed about Sean and his demeanor, about the children thing. >> He's good with my kids. He's really great with my kids. >> Okay. But my main thing, you know him much better than we do. Do you think John is capable of killing? >> No. you know, he didn't say any he didn't, you know, he didn't spot out one day, you know, how he's regret his mistake and why couldn't I been more, you know, >> no, he is I will say and I know this again about him, I can't stress it enough that when it comes to his personality, he is very resigned to he'll take a big sigh, make a big sigh and go, "Well, it is what it is." >> No. >> What do you think about him? was he capable of uh obviously know we we know you know a lot of people uh some good some bad you know and it's not that I'm saying it's just trying to hang out with the uh criminal type of just questionable times is he capable of paying someone to take care of a problem or you know hinting and and getting that driving force to do a labor >> if he if if so well first of all and I would still lean on people for favors um >> well yeah I mean >> that's possible >> in business um there have been times where you know we're looking at done. You know, >> we were looking to um >> you pretty forceful business person or not? >> No, he's he has a very very laidback kind of attitude when it comes to business. And it's funny cuz I've learned how to read his face when we're in a meeting. Okay. And he's the kind of person who will sit there and he'll smile when he's having conversation with this builder or this architect or whoever, you know, and then we walk out of there and I could just tell his face. Um and I just look and be like, "You didn't like that at all, did you?" You know. um >> power on the outside. >> He can keep himself composed. Um but I don't he'll go back and discuss it with me later. He'll go back and discuss it with me later. And um you know, we'll we'll he'll never he'll never look at me and say, "I didn't." You know, like I said, I've learned to read his face that I just tell walk out of a meeting and I'll look at him and say, "You didn't, you know, and I can usually tell to the point where I can usually tell exactly what statements it was that he didn't like. Okay, you didn't like this guy was going to charge or you didn't like his payment schedule or you didn't like the way, you know, said this or say that." You know, we'll go back later and we'll discuss it. Um, as far as being capable of paying someone else to do this, of course I want to say no. All right. Of course, I want to say no. Um I can tell you I don't think so. >> Yes. >> I would imagine looking at his finances would be able to tell you if there's money paid out somewhere. >> Yeah. But I mean >> want to get more personal known for a lot of times around it. You know it's just the big picture. You look at things and these type of investigations it's the husband ex-boyfriend or the current boyfriend that are always usually the suspect. and just you know talking to people he didn't seem like he was all that excited about being dad and let's face it having children are very expensive let alone >> he is also very concerned always about what everything costs you know and we just got a um we just got a quote from the architect that we're likely going to be using this project and um you know that's always the first question is you know how much is this going to cost and you know am I going to come up with the money up front how much is this going to be financed and Um, so with him, a lot of it has to do with with money. I mean, I'm naturally in his in his position. I would be naturally because you have to consider the fact that he probably goes into everything saying to himself, >> my name speaks for me and people are automatically going to be and I been in business. I'm sure you've done your, you know, sued a couple of times for, you know, some real estate deals and what I understand stuff that totally beyond even his scope of understand. it was a is a turn dropped the ball somewhere in real estate deals to that. Um, so I think that just based on experience with people, you know, that's his first question. Do they matter? >> How much long for me? Um, I don't I really I don't see it. You know, I don't I don't >> I mean that's obviously, you know, it's because, you know, wants to along and the you know, the the due date is getting closer and closer. >> Why would you wait so long to tell me about it in July? >> I mean, that's why I have a job. I mean, that's unfortunate doing this. It's just it's just like you know maybe he thought she was going to board the baby. I don't know she unfortunately she's I can't talk to I can't question her thought process. But you know, I'm 45 some years old. I've been single with a bachelor living life professional football player. Now I'm going to kid cra my lifestyle cost me. >> Yeah. We are concerned that that that could be motive, you know. And yeah, I don't see him getting his hands dirty in it being quite frank with you. But we mean he does have resources to take care of that kind of problem. >> Honestly, I would not even begin to know how much something like that cost. But just on a note regarding his finances, you know, I'm his real estate broker and also his mortgage broker. Okay. Also his loan officer unless he's hiding accounts from me somewhere. I see he's got the bank. >> Okay. >> And I know it's not all that much. >> Okay. >> Okay. It's not that much. I know that he had a couple of investment deals or investment deal that went way wrong still years back and he lost a lot of me. I don't know exactly how much it was, but I I'm under the pressure that it was the bulk of his assets that he had put into that lost. So, you know, I've seen what he's got and obviously I, you know, professionally I can't disclose that to you, but it's >> and when it really again, we've talked to a lot of people, a lot of women as you guess. And, uh, you know, how do you grow up? Does he really? Well, we can go that later. But um just as far as asking and you talking about that because you know every one of these women been with him or you know whatever have their own impression of him and that's all I wanted to cover. to get, you know, back to what I asked originally. Do you remember when you found out that this happened and then you it was associated with John or cuz >> I had it was a day of um I had started getting phone calls later in the afternoon from was it my mother who called me first? I don't remember who called. I think it was my mother called me first and she was like, "Have you heard the news? Did you hear what happened?" Whatever. I was like, "No." What? Huh? Um >> did you hear what did they tell you? or your mom or >> that someone that he had been involved with had had murdered him killed and um that he was that they had him that they were questioning him. I picked up the phone. Well, I actually I had heard it on the radio first, but they they didn't mention they didn't mention her name first and they didn't mention right off the bat that it was associated with him until later. >> I want to say it had to be about maybe 3:00 in the afternoon or something like that. >> Did you hear from your mom or the Rio? I didn't hear it from my mom until most western time. Um, [snorts] but I called him and he said, "I just heard something and could you please at least call me, let me know you're okay, whatever something." >> He didn't return my call. And I called him again a few hours later. I was like, "I haven't heard back from. Can you at least call me and let me know you're all right?" And didn't hear. >> What time did you call him? >> Well, I knew he had a doctor's appointment that went from a motorcycle wreck. Okay. His hip was uh sexually injured. >> Swollen. >> His hip was still swollen. He was limping. He wasn't really for this thing. He wasn't getting around that well. He couldn't actually I don't think he was limping. >> Okay. He could barely walk upstairs. >> Um, you know, to go and do something like this. And then I read the newspaper and it said in the newspaper that she lived on the third floor of a condo building. Well, if you live in a condo building, you're on third floor. Like, who did that? Did they have a key or would they have ring everybody's doorbell in order to have somebody in the building? So, you know, it was that. But I I said no way. He was he was living. He wasn't getting around real well. I had sent him a text message. I guess it was earlier in the day. I can't remember what time it was. >> The day of asking him, "Please call me and let me know how the doctor's appointment went." What did the doctor say? >> That was before you heard anything. >> It was before I heard anything. It was maybe around it was sometime after lunch. I think it was sometimes after lunch. I I sent him I thought I had called him. He said, "Oh, he said a text message just asking what what was the doctor's ver what did they say about your hip?" Couple hours later, I had not heard back from him. That was when I had also heard it on the radio. I called him a message. Are you okay? Is everything okay? Please call me. The second time I called him. Same thing. I had heard back from you. Please just call me and let me know you're okay. We don't have to talk about anything else. You have to answer any questions. Please just call let me know you're all right. Didn't get an answer back. >> Didn't ever call you back. Okay. >> Okay. >> Now, so we can kind of go a certain thing or try here. Um so that day uh sometime late morning when you first started to hear about it oh no >> it was after you heard from >> point 24 >> um so you hear back from him you sent text message earlier about his appointment >> called him a couple times left messages hey what's going on you okay just let me know if you're okay >> um >> how many times did you call me think about that area >> twice that I know of um it was twice that I know of for sure I may have called him one or two more times And like his phone shut off like your old right to voicemail. Like it didn't even r messages already. >> What was your day like that day? I mean I don't know you're talking so I don't know what time you get up your kids or what time you get up that day. We could go over that and then kind of >> I got up it was about it was late. It was about 10:30 in the morning. Um I had up kind of late the night before. I was I having problems with the car battery wouldn't start and um >> So what do you mean late the night before? Yeah, cuz in the garage totally went um couldn't get it to start. I'll deal with it tomorrow. So, I woke up I woke actually it was about 10:30 in the morning, I think. Um and I had to call my son to school because he also stayed home that day. >> Um and one >> did the other two go to school? >> Yeah, the other two went to school that day. Um >> where where do uh where did they go to school? >> They're walking distance from the house. >> Are they in high school? >> No, my youngest is in sixth grade. He's been 12 week. >> What's his birthday? uh the 20th 12. Um he he stayed home today also. And um I was out like I was out in the garage fing started. I was like, "All right, I'm replace." >> What time was that about? >> Around noon by the time already. >> You wake up in the morning at 10:30. That's as early as you get up and >> No, I'm usually a lot earlier. >> That day you don't wake up till 10:30. You're in house sleeping. You wake up, you find out that um is home. Mhm. >> You just just wake up and he's there and >> no my kids have this thing and I don't know if it's a teenager thing or what they have their room in the basement. Okay. Their room in the basement and my room is on the second floor. Okay. So, they're two floors down. They're teachers. They're lazy. Rather than come upstairs, he's not feeling good. Rather than come upstairs and say, "Mom, I don't feel good." He calls me on his cell phone and leave me a message. Mom, I'm not feeling good. Could you just call me on school? >> From house from his >> from house phone. Okay. So he calls the basement upstairs too, right? Just the dark from house. >> Yeah, he called you from all the way upstairs to call me out. >> What time is that? >> Um don't remember >> before you woke up or >> Yeah, because the message was there when when I got up. Okay. >> I went downstairs, I checked him, he had a fever, he wasn't feeling good. Um so you said I called my school and then after that I had got to the garage. I said I was trying to fill my truck. Couldn't get started. So I called a friend of mine and asked him to please on his lunch. Could you bring me a battery? Could he bring me a battery? So he went and brought me a battery. >> Who was that? >> Huh? >> Who's friend? >> Oh, it's just a friend of mine. >> I mean, you just need a name. >> Oh, his name is Al. >> Okay. So D E V E R A. Um, so he went got me the battery and he brought it and he had to go to work. So I had Andrew help me dress and drop in my truck. So um, I came back in the house. So it was after lunch. back in the house. Flipped on the radio and that's heard it. Um, like I said, I I called him. He didn't answer again later. He didn't answer. I fig he'll get to me, you know, when that kind of like tone of our entire relationship. He'll get over to me when he does. >> How long did S stay at your house? What time did he come home about? >> L and he was just for a few minutes. Is he Is he a friend like friend friend or friend? >> One of the other guy boyfriends you talking about? >> Yeah. >> Yeah, he's he's ex-boyfriend. Um >> is [clears throat] there way we contact him or I mean everybody talk we ask how did you find out? Where were you? So we go okay this blah blah we do that this is like but >> the number you got >> so um anything else happened during the day or I mean >> I guess I didn't hear back from back >> so you know after day so I sent him an email >> and I decided you know I know things are tough right now I know things are difficult whatever keep your chin up please get a hold of you when you can just let me know you're okay and over the next couple of days the next couple of weeks I would send him, you know, I think it was like over next week I sent him several emails just saying let me know you're all right. Um, finally I heard back from him from his attorney just basically apologizing saying he can't, you know, he asked to get in touch with you that he can't talk to anybody right now. He'll get a hold of you when he can >> attorney. >> Yeah, he'll get a hold of you whenever he can. >> Her name was R. What was um before the day that Ryan was killed leading up to that? What was John's mood like? What was that like up to that point? A week before I don't know when was like the most recent the time the October 4th that you had seen her and talked to him. >> I was in his place the night before. >> Okay. At his house. >> Yeah. I was at his place the evening before. >> What time is that? >> Um let's see. He called me. My kids were at full practice and I waited until practice over. It was like 6:30, dropped my kid off at home. >> This was October 3rd. >> Yeah. And then I grabbed dinner cuz he wasn't getting around so well, you know. I said he he called me and he said, "I'm feeling a little bit better." He said, "You know, I'm up to getting out of the house a little bit." Um he said I was thinking of taking a walk and going eating dinner. He said, "So, I want you to go with me." We had a bunch of stuff business related we had to talk about anyway. >> And I said, "Well, you don't if you're still in a considerable amount of pain." I said, "Let's forget about going out. I'll just cup something and bring it. >> Um and so he said, you know, he's getting out isn't a problem. He says later in the evening. He says, you know, >> bother. >> Yeah. He says that it's, you know, I ate for. So I stopped and I picked up dinner. I got over there. I think it was around 7:30. >> You make that. >> I got I got him a steak salad and I got a duck salad. >> Where's Where was that? >> Max. >> Maxision Street. I want to see 1900. Yes. I for credit card. >> Nice. Apostrophy questions sometime later on. >> If you are going to call my friend S >> and with him um we are very close. He is an ex-boyfriend. I don't make him privileged to whatever relationship I'm involved. >> You want to share anything? >> You don't need to look at him and say does she believe she was dating? >> Well, we ask questions. We ask him questions. Um to know your friends with him or Okay. So, he knows your work too. >> He knows the friends. He knows that we are um business associates as well. Yeah, you don't need to, you know, we appreciate that. But, um, so that night you go over, you max, pick up some food, go over there about 7:30. >> Yeah. 7:30. I got her >> and then you stay in the house for this. >> We stayed in the house. Does it >> How long have you left about 9:30? It was my intention to leave there and go to a girlfriend's house. Okay. But, you know, I said I I ran home real quick, check on the kids, and then I was going to shoot to a girlfriend's house of mine for a little while. I couldn't get her started. >> Did they see you there? >> So, you left about 10 time >> 9:30. and then went home. >> It hit me beginning October and I tripped in the ever since. >> Kidding. >> Since October 11th, I had $8,000 with damage to my veil. >> So, Huh? >> Okay. >> No, my right hand is This side is messed up. It still hurts. >> No. >> No, it hurts. >> The steering wheel or something or Yeah. Grab a hold of it. >> Well, I guess I have to get something. But >> well, the girlfriend to see. I mean, he's already had plans and you called James that. >> Um, there were ton of plans. They weren't anything. You know, she like want to drive back. I keep >> Well, if I was call her and confirm that you guys intended to have plans, she would say, "Yeah, we we first last name." >> Christy. >> Okay. Last name. >> Passion. P A S C H E N. And I don't numbers myself. I >> That's okay. >> Do you have or the boss wants me to call it or call me too? Okay. >> Notice what the detectives have done without making an accusation. Yang has committed herself to a detailed testable timeline. When she woke up, her son Andrew being homesick, S bringing the battery, the visit she planned with Christy, and the evening she spent with Shaun Gale. Each person call, purchase, and time can now be checked independently. Later reporting says investigators challenged this alibi after Andrew said his mother was not home. That later confrontation does not appear in these recordings. appreciate you coming on because you know like I we got we've had probably since this happened with Ronnie um we've had four other calls um that we still work and do so we call out our unit we we call out for u just homicides >> okay >> and uh say when you see four cases and I compare it to a municipality like Chicago like >> well I mean talking about in because all the all the office all the investigators from other departments we handle all our other cases all those other departments and then we get called in we work those you know and then getting Oh, it's just, you know, it's like a lot of people talking. So, that's kind of why some of these strut out. Um, but back So, that night, um, >> you go home, you're having problem with the car as far as like the alternator or just start again. Were you having problems while you're driving it or? >> No, I mean, I'm not a mechanic, but I just assumed [clears throat] I just assumed, you know, okay, it's 2001, it still has the original battery in it from when I bought the thing, you know. I just figured it was battery. Now, I was also, even if I replace the battery, I was continuing to have problems with it for the next couple days. Um, turned out it was a loose battery cable. I don't know if when my son and I went I mean I can't but I can change the battery. I don't know if when my son and I went to go put the battery in, we didn't tighten the cable down enough or something new. >> Yeah. But my friend was it one or two nights later had to come save the rear end of groceries up the street. So um yeah, so I I like I said I gone home. Um it was when I went to leave again but couldn't get started. So >> you just stay home. >> Yeah, I just stay home. until the next [clears throat] morning. Um, moving on. Anything else that you know you went or anything in the evening or afternoon? >> Started. >> Yeah, it was working fine. Um, I drove to the store to get medicine for my son. I went to the hospital to get some medicine for him. Um, later that night I went out to my friend's house instead. >> Yeah. >> Where she live? >> She's way out tonight. So, >> how's your neighborhood up? >> Quiet. Pretty cool. You have two universities close by. They keep the neighborhood, I think, pretty stable. Nor Eastern North for college. So, it's pretty I don't see a lot of problems. >> Yeah. Thanks for the other side of Kenzie. Maybe it's different story. >> It's okay. >> Do you remember dinner time? >> No, I have to ask though. >> No, it was later. Yeah, I mean later. >> Yeah. >> Can you think off hand as far as Yeah, you've seen him around for five or six years. I'm sure he's introduced you to people. Um >> Okay. >> Never mind working on travel, out of country, out of state. You know, one of my sticking points know is that he did a lot of traveling and I know that um obviously it was disclosed in the letters that he has various women he travels with. I don't know how many I don't you know and my question to him was of course how you ask me anywhere you know. Um, and we used to get, you know, we used to get into like little arguments about that. But, um, like I said, with him, it was always kind of like if I if I try to push him for things, he was strong. >> But if you just sit back and let him >> come to you, >> come to you, then he'll be a lot more for I don't push him for a lot of things. >> I guess my question is, do you I mean, is there anybody you know that he's spoken on in his life that may have mentioned have a beef with issues with? post. >> Yeah. I mean, what a girl he may have dated issue with ex-boyfriend and you know, >> you know, we ask I mean it's just you'd be surprised if you don't ask the right questions people sometimes offer the information. So, you know, we spoke to Sean right we've spoken to everybody in his life pretty much in death and it's just you know may give us the same six people that that we know about. I just there may one person we don't know about. >> Yeah. I was under the the impression that um that he pretty much kept everything compartmentalized. You know, I don't he never mentioned anything to me. A matter of fact, there have been times when I have felt like he's withheld. Obviously, he has now we know um you information and details about things either because he felt that it was none of my business or because he felt that I was going to make some sort of judgment against him um in terms of whether I wanted to continue associating with him or not. Um so as far as mentioning much about his personal life when it comes to other people, >> not at all. >> You know, places hang out, restaurants, bars, clubs. I mean >> he would go he would say things like my buddy's place. Now there were there were a couple of occasions where um I would mention oh you know I I in such such place or whatever he would say oh you know I know buddy owns a place or I know that or whatever but other than that he would never he was never really detailed. He always would leave out a lot of detail. I want to say occasionally he might mention name a place or something but there's really nothing that sticks out in my mind as being that he's specific. He he came very vague and I guess I think the reason for that is because like I said this one and the other the other one doesn't want >> when did he ever talk about R to >> not at all. >> I mean he never mentioned that he was having issues with her and >> never mentioned her period. >> So we know she had a drug I mean she seems on the surface as a horrible person but I mean drug problem gambling problem. We don't know to show somebody money. That was one of the things that he's, you know, sitting there upside down about. >> That's a good question. Bring that up. Um, now we talked a little about the day of before. Um, his he had, you know, you guys talked about this and you said you talked a little bit about it. >> Of course, we talked about it. But again, I don't trust him. >> He's still closed, still. >> Yeah. >> You know, I like that I don't trust him. I let him do the talking. I will tell him if he chooses to share something with me, I will tell him I understand how you feel. and maybe I've had this incident in my life that is similar to what you're going through or about anything. Okay. Um and I understand where you're coming from. I totally get that or whatever. But as far as him, you know, his his take on the whole thing is what I told him is how do you know that this incident even has anything to do with you? I said I asked him specifically. I said how well did you know her? I said, "Can you tell me beyond a shadow of a doubt that she wasn't involved with someone else that she didn't know somebody money?" And he said, "Well, nobody can say he nobody knows 100%." He goes, and essentially what he was telling me was I I didn't want enough. >> When he was talking about that, I'm surprised that whatever. Did he ever say that he doubted it existed or that he was going to make sure? I mean, you're 45 years old. You have, but you said you got you've been carry your whole life. Are you you know what I mean? I would be like wait a minute you know time out before I you know resign myself to something like that. Can I talk about that? >> That is one of the things that would swing around in the back of my head like well >> he's not is he would you say he's na at all or not about anything? >> No I would not. >> Okay. I would say that he is he's overly cautious in a lot of a lot of situations to the point where sometimes I want to put hands around his throat and be like we lighten up we lose sometimes. I mean, even especially in business, he questions everything. He was getting ready to go to town and I needed him to sign a power of attorney in case we have this real estate closing scheduled before he back. So, I called the attorney and I said, "Go real quick." I said, "I'll have sign it and I'll get back over to you. That way, if we get the closing done, okay?" He looked over that power of attorney. He looked at every eye. He left every tea, you know, and he's like, "I don't like the way this is written." Like, I don't think I should sign it. He pointed out a couple of ambiguities in the legal jargon like totally going on my head. And I looked at I was like, I know you're right. Um, he's very cautious. >> Besides his football background, his athletics, what's his background? I mean, what do you know his degree in his degree is? Do you know what his >> education? He's an education major at Ohio State. He's children's book author. Um, >> so he's not I mean, so we talk about investments, you talk about real estate and things, he's more of a guy that's kind of involved in not because he's some tycoon or knowledge about things. He's kind of like he knows someone, he meets people, he gets involved in things cuz he's, you know, >> this is this is going to be our first uh development project. >> This is our first cracket. So he's never done anything like this before. Um, as far as the whole paternity issue, it was kind of swimming around in the back of my mind like you know, especially after, like I said, the way that I interpreted what he had said to me. I thought it was something that I said that he had some brief was more that um, like I said, the way he the way he phrased it made me think that it was like she had already had the kid came back and just like, oh, this is risking money. >> Um, that was around the back of my head. I was like, I hope he's going to ask for a return test, >> but it's not something I ever said to him, right? Okay. It's not something that came out of my mouth. >> Um, so I don't know if he planned to or not. Again, if you read what was in the newspapers, you know, he's all this is we were looking forward to according to what was in the news. That's what didn't make sense to me. That's why I don't believe anything I'm reading in the newspaper because according to the newspaper, you know, this is like the culmination of some lifelong relationship between the two of them. And he he didn't impression. No, >> she never talked about her or the baby or baby or anything like that. >> No, other than that one conversation we had about it at least. I just left it alone. You know, in my mind it was like, okay. >> So, if it was all that it was made out in the paper, you'd certainly think that >> because even though he was with another woman, it's still a separate thing, too. I mean, I could I could certainly be a father, continue to, you know, have a relationship with you. >> And I had said to him at the time, I made I made a point of letting him know, you know, okay, fine. That's your life, that's your business, and you want to share it with me, great. If not, okay, >> kind of a question just you can choose to answer it. Um, just to kind of get an idea of how he relates to people. Um, I mean, you're very attractive woman. He's a Well, he's he's, you know, 40ome years old. He has, you know, like you said, friends or whatever. Well, you're aware of it and continue to have a relationship with him. I mean, >> you know, how does he get away with it? How does he manipulator? How does he manage that type of uh life? Do you ever thought about that or is it just not something that >> very smooth or you just >> here's here's for me because of the fact that it's like okay you've made it clear you see other people okay this is something that you put out there it's not like you're hiding the fact that you see other people um the rest of the details I don't I don't need to know you know I don't need to know because for me on a personal level if I have those details then that's something that I have to sit down and question myself on >> you know it's like I don't want to know who these people are because it leads to other questions and maybe guys don't do this but women do this okay who are these guys are prettier than me and no I mean >> well here maybe I'm jumping the gun or you know think something that's not really relevant I mean you got your three kids you got a house you're a professional woman you're taking care of them >> maybe that's all you want from him anyway >> oh >> I mean that's what I'm saying is it did you you see John as that's this is the limit of our relationship and that's all it's going to be that's fine because I have my kids that I'm most involved with having >> it priority. You know, here's the thing. Obviously, I was married once before. It was a very long time ago. Okay. I couldn't tell you where my ex lives. I know it's not in the state of Illinois. Okay. Goodbye, Britain. >> I don't want to marry you. >> No, not for at least 10 years. About 10 years or something or you just didn't care. >> I wouldn't couldn't even begin to judge. Okay. >> Couldn't even begin to judge. Um >> I don't I like independence. I don't want to be married again. Okay. >> That's it. Makes less sense. You know, if I ask you a question, it kind of >> as far as placing limitations on the relationship, like when you ask me, is this all you want from him? Like don't put limitations on like that. It just it'll become what it becomes. >> You're still, you know, you don't turn you're hoping, you know, whatever it [clears throat] become or or you just easily meet someone tomorrow, someone else become involved and say goodbye. >> That's always No, I think we always be friends and we're, you know, like I said, I'm business associate, so it's not that easy to just go by difficult. I mean for some people you know you met somebody you know what I mean >> you don't you don't turn your back on sixyear relationship and go you know that's it um because of the fact that our relationship has has been multiaceted um you know I'm not I don't put any kind of like restrictions on it like it will be what it right now at this point in time he need a friend or anything else so >> well >> and somebody to take care of the business end of things because he can't attend those things right now >> how do you how would you assess how he's doing emotionally I mean, I'm assuming you said you talked to him since I don't how often you've talked to him since this happened, but um about once a week. >> I mean, would you say he's, you know, is he is he distraught? Is he kind of just operating [clears throat] later? >> Okay. >> Yeah. This is um sitting real heavy on his shoulders. Okay. It is. >> I mean, he's talking about things after the fact now, you know, thought about it and uh you know, it's kind of good thing now. You know, guy never >> he's basically it's heavy. You said >> it's a respect. on it without reading what I'm saying. I'm just saying over the loss of Ron. I'm just saying, you know, there's some relief on his end. He's not going to be danning anymore or uh is he depressed and upset now because I think about it, you know, I was actually looking forward to me and dad. I just was afraid to tell people. >> No, I think he's very matter of fact about it. >> He's very matter of fact about that part of it. Um he he's is depressed. I will I will say that. Okay. Is he has he seen anybody or has he thought about this is something that >> I don't know how you know I would respond to this? >> Yeah. Like he married and had kids and one of his kids >> frankly from like if you read the letters and stuff that >> went around he had a few ladies he was seeing both quite the same. >> Um no I think that he's pretty much gone into solitary mode >> kind of shell or just >> Yeah. I really don't know. >> Yeah. I really don't know if he's still talking to anyone else. I really don't know if he's still >> of the other girls. I really don't. I sort of get the impression that because of the fact that I'm also a business partner and yet there's business that needs to be done and we have to have interaction because of that he sort of um we chose to talk to but I mean I don't know you tell me if any others said yeah I'm still I'd like to know >> you want to share that with you. >> Of course you do. >> So >> no I don't know. No. >> Do you know that has he had any other business uh entities or partnerships >> that we're not aware of, you know, that we should be looking at >> other than with me? >> Yeah. >> None that I know of. >> None I know of. I know that um you know, he's had some real estate dealings in the past. He owned a building that he sold probably like maybe a year ago, year and a half ago. >> Okay. I had a couple other questions follow the night. We're at Sean's house. I was you there from 7:30 to 9:30. Um, what did you guys do at that time? Did you guys discuss business? >> Um, no. We had dinner. >> We ate in front of the TV. We're watching um I can't remember some game. Um, he said his hip was not even after was it like 3 4 weeks past the motorcycle accident. He showed me it was still really swollen like to the point it was visible. And I remember at one point he asked me u do you want me something to drink to go with dinner? I said let me go get it. You know here cuz the kitchen is upstairs from the family room. >> Okay. And well, you clean on the main floor and you're in the family room and then you go upstairs and it's kitchen and the living room and then you go upstairs again and it's the bedroom. He's two bedroom. Um >> well he doesn't leave anything on his [clears throat] >> he doesn't trust me. >> Okay, Mr. T. Um he said, "No, I'll get it." And he got up and I remember watching him walk the stairs and I was like, "God, he's in shape." Um so you know, we ate dinner, we watch TV, left um around 9:30. >> Do you besides um like on my phone? Do you communicate with him another way? Email, whatever, >> email, text message. >> Yeah, he likes to text message. >> Are you a lot? >> I'm getting better at it, but to me it's like all those little teeny tiny buttons, you know? Like, >> right. I mean, yeah, he seems Yeah. quiet and reserved, but yet >> polite. >> Yeah. >> You know what I mean? >> So, >> he's not like an arrogant >> person who you wouldn't say, right? >> No, he's not arrogant at all. some athletes or some celebrities. People at celebrities can be >> that was one of the things that was one of the things that struck me about him when I first met him because you know there were obviously other athletes milling around. >> Sure. >> And and he did strike me that that is one of the things that struck me but I was like he's not stuck up >> your level of >> Yeah. >> So >> you know a fan do you know he has guns or he said he owns guns. >> He recommended it to me. He never mentioned it to me. Afterwards afterwards he mentioned he said you know he goes I never mentioned it before. He goes he had a gun in this house. He was naked and they took him. >> Okay. But he never in your time know he's only go to the range once a week. >> No never even knew until he mentioned it to me on say maybe it was about two weeks ago. I never knew he had any in the house. >> Do you tell you obviously yes we have guns but do you know offand what kind of guns he's got? I'm kind of curious there's more guns out there we don't know about. >> No, you know like I said I never The only thing that he said was that he bought he was living in H Park and that when he moved to Chicago they had them that before they passed that law of not having any guns >> you know that he just had them since he >> just criminals >> only criminals have them and they usually have better than the police do >> um so you know I never even he had in the house until he mentioned to me probably weeks ago so he doesn't have anymore really holding up though. >> Got it. Um, so you text him, email him on business and personal stuff. >> This is a personal stuff. Yeah. >> You said really brief about he's good with your kids and you got a relationship with kids. >> Yeah, he's got a decent relationship with my it's not an extensive relationship. You know, he's the kind of person that likes kids in limited >> do we have your own. So >> yeah, he likes kids in limited exactly limited doses. Um, >> you ever asked him about I mean just talk about things you ever ask about how you know how you never married or how you never had kids. I mean every we all try it once, twice, right? >> Yeah. He basically said that his his outlook on that is is that um >> marriage is something that should be saved for later in life. >> Exactly. >> Um marriage is something that should be saved for later in life. I guess like kind of activities done with maturing and that the partner that you choose should be someone that you have things in common with. >> No, but you hate being a 55year-old guy with a one-year-old like >> um kind of a >> I mean I I know [laughter] I know I mean I know when you're young a parent and like make those things >> I did when I was young I feel that energy. >> I know but so you know you see a lot more older people have younger children. >> Yes. But I also that's different for I also think that it's different for men. >> Yeah. >> I think that I think it's different for guys. >> I just I think that >> we don't we don't accept that they actually come into the world. >> Well, it's just that but once they do it's I don't know maybe a single parent and always my kids by myself that you I see the mother is more interactive with the kids than the father. So basing that going on the idea the dad doesn't have as active a role as the mother does you know. because it says it's a stereotypical wife should be staying you know saying [clears throat] well that's not the case today I'm saying that's still the attitude of I don't have much responsibility that's her you know that's her pledge >> both but so as far as Sean's concerned though you just think he just figured that you know he wasn't Russian that's the way it is talk about his childhood or growing up or family you know >> yeah I mean history no nothing really struck me bad nothing really struck me bad um he didn't go into a lot of elaborate detail about it Um, for me, I feel that based on the person I know he is. There must be something up there that's not scary. I just don't know what it is. I don't know if to me I figure well his father's military. Maybe his dad's just real strict or something. Um, even as I was like, so you know, cuz you're really strict and no, not particularly. So, he never really shared a lot about his childhood, but I watched how careful and meticulous a person that he is. Um, you know, people don't get that way without reason. >> I like you growing up with a military father, too. >> You know, just kind of routine. Anything quirky about him or >> Everything's quirky. >> Everything's great. >> Would you like me to get my list out? >> Okay. >> Um, >> well, >> that stands out or or like red flag or anything. I mean, know we meet people, you know, men meet people and during relationship early on that's fine. No, other than the fact that other than the annoying fact that he is intentionally vague >> um about things like for example he'll say something he won't change names places >> you know other than that and you know >> I've heard about stories about being with someone when it's a woman when you're with the woman >> sometimes >> well obviously but you know I um you know I said other than the fact that and it's to me it was just a nagging little annoyance >> you heard about this and you heard it was when he was bothered that he had a kid or she was pregnant Um, did you go Oh, [ __ ] or anything. Did you think >> I put two together and I put them two together and I was like, "Oh, well, apparently whoever this woman was, she didn't have the kid yet." >> But did you think, you know, what Sean or >> I never thought for a moment. Okay, that was I started getting phone calls from friends and stuff later in the evening. And of course, the reason they were calling is cuz they wanted to know if I was okay. That's all they heard. [clears throat] That's all they heard. What? >> Yeah. All they heard was dead girlfriend of Sean and they were like, "Are you okay?" "Yeah, still I'm okay. I'm here." Was me. Okay. Obviously talking now. Um I'm just going to tell on that. >> It wasn't me is a striking phrase, but it is a denial, not an admission. Its value to investigators is that Yang volunteers the wording while they remain conversational. They are still preserving her account and maintaining rapport rather than showing their evidence or arguing with her. The supplied interview ends before the later confrontations described in public reporting. >> I guess any point you tell me and I don't know did at any point in your pictures they known each other. you obviously had this intimate relationship however long you ever consider yourself boyfriend girlfriend at one point I mean do you ever as a girlfriend know that a lot of has to do with the company that you're with and who you're dressing >> right >> okay and with him he was always paranoid he was he's overly paranoid about yeah about you know >> who knows that who knows that I know you who knows that um you know we see each other and who knows what do they know and you know whenever I whenever remember I would mention to him oh you know I'm going to talk to such there were a couple times where he came he came by to see my kids football games the first question out of his mouth this you know who are these people what are they all about >> you know you think had to do with the whole >> no this was before that we always that way um honestly it depends on the audience and depend on who I'm with whether I referred him as boyfriend or whether I referred him as a friend or whether I referred him as a business associate it depends on who I'm with >> the problem that if you temporary thing outside of it really is >> I don't think you ever girls women we all have a circle or small circle be one two three people >> you know like if something happened to you and we wanted to know you know who was your who are you involved with you know who would we ask you like in other words which few people maybe did you share that you said you had people on you saying hey are you okay I mean a lot of people or a few people >> my just some close friends you know the other thing too is a lot of it is dependent on what's not said >> yeah I I don't necessarily when we would go someplace I would not necessarily introduce him as something. Hi, this is Sean. >> You make your own conclusions. Not only quite frankly half the time I don't What the hell's he need? >> Exactly. What about his friends? Did you ever friends or >> I never met a single one of his friends? None of them >> family? >> None. He never, as far as I know. >> Do you think that was that or you just it was when he was >> I just figured it was the way he was? I just honestly figured it was the way he was. Um, honestly, I have always been under the impression that none of his friends even know I exist. And yeah, it bothered me a little bit. I'm like, you know, any other serious friends. I don't even know I exist. What's up with that? Yeah, those questions were in the back of my head. >> But, you know, once it's one of those things where I shrug my shoulders go, that's the way he is. ago. >> It's interesting. >> Eccentric good. We all differently and >> just have a point of clarification before this here. Uh the Monica moners, you obviously got first badge and second track. Do you remember I wish I would have brought the letters. Do you remember where were their names on both the name of of his guards on both packets? >> I don't remember. Um I know they were on the first >> I don't remember if they were on the second. Like I said the second letter like all this again. >> Well, what wasn't your name on that list though? The first list? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> I thought now you know you say you say that you that list and you didn't know anybody on that list. >> No person. Did you speak to with Sean about things on the list? Did you go over and say who's this person? Who's this person? >> I did not cuz he was very much on the fence about it. It was one of those things where I was going to get my head bit off if I asked. >> He was trying to control. >> No, I understand that, you know. Plus, you obviously want to know if these are other girlfriends. You want to know certain things. >> I know, but I don't want to know. >> Once you go there, it's kind of you got to go back. >> You really want to open a can like if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Okay. And the other thing, too, is that I always have to tell the truth. >> You didn't call any girlfriends with performers on. You didn't call those girls that say, "Hey, you know, it's a deal. Did you get these letters, too?" >> No, because Yeah. >> Did they call you or anything? >> Okay, that's all I have. >> We appreciate you coming down. >> I know. >> We're never anything. My business card. >> Okay. >> Anything or anything comes up? Um, >> questions for us since we've been talking. >> Yeah. I want to know how many of those win. He's still talking. I want to know how to keep some help with >> well can help me. >> The problem is that he is an attorney. So >> sorry. >> Well, >> well, you know what? Um, just like you know, >> I'm saying as far as far as list of people that are on there, >> it's probably pretty accurate. He actually speaks to >> we would find through attorney to find out. >> You probably had more interaction with him since we've seen him. >> To me, if like I have to ask myself, is it really going to change anything? Is it really going to make me look good? I don't see you anymore. >> Even if you find out, >> probably not. Okay. As far as his involvement, it's probably not. Okay. Have you been with someone for six years? like, you know, >> yeah, but I mean all you still need to be, you know, until you get someone else, you still need to be concerned about your safety. >> I mean, >> that was the other thing that I did, right? >> If you're the only active person still seeing him, I mean, I say all that, but if it sounds like you're saying he's probably the only one right now is you. >> So he says, >> though, be careful. >> So, so he says, again, you know, I take that and I say, well, obviously there's a lot of other things that have gone on here that you haven't been completely honest with me about. So, should I believe you when you tell me, you know, that you're not talking anybody out? I don't know. Um, as far as safety goes, >> that was the first thing that I did was I arranged for to have my neighbor start walking my my son to the bus every morning. Yeah, he's got somebody walking him to school. Um, >> and in the afternoon he walks by himself, but there's a crossing guard and everything. >> I just I used to be notorious for leaving the doors unlocked. That just doesn't happen in my house anymore. >> You're pretty live in the city. But again, I grew up in the country. >> It's in a nice It's a decent area. I mean that's to say it's not touching >> near um >> is that area >> just Peterson Avenue Foster is the next main street and Foster. So um >> guy that was a muscle fest his house you know musles muscle >> it was um German he was I can't remember like Belgian Belgian I think he was actually Belgian Jewish but they had muscle fest every year they had it muscles >> in that area. Yeah. Yeah, that's where I know if it was in there. >> It's not far. It's It's pretty much walking distance from Sash. It's a nice area. I've never felt like I had to lock my doors. So, it's like having to go back and reinhabit. So, now every time I make keys for my kids, now they have to take keys to school. I come home, you know, if I come home and find doors unlocked, then they get >> since this has happened since Ronnie was killed. Nothing suspicious. You have any calls or you tell us? >> I haven't do [clears throat] you have anything? >> I haven't. >> Have you been kind of keep looking over your shoulder or not? [clears throat] be careful. We have to be careful to >> some degree. But I think there's also a sense of um I don't want to say a false sense of security to get after a while. That's the one thing that I have to try to remember is that you know don't get too comfortable. Don't get don't get too comfortable. Be something right. >> Yeah. Um I think any should come up but if we follow questions you have any calls. >> Yeah. Um what number's easier to check? Cuz I call you at the house and I >> never answer the house phone. That's like teaser. All right. >> Okay. My cell phone is the best place to reach to me. >> The only time the house phone rings is the bill or it's for my children. >> I'm sure three kids that ring a lot. >> Well, they're friends. Can't get through. >> Can't get this guy. >> Well, thank you very much. >> Other questions other than the girls? >> Yeah, that's what I want to know. We'll keep watching. [clears throat] >> Okay. >> If uh if anything else comes up or we have any information that we get, you know, you don't mind coming back in time. Is this this okay? Is this kind of close or >> what Yang did not know during this early interview was how dramatically the investigation would later develop. The timeline she had given detectives was not simply accepted. According to public reporting, investigators later said her son Andrew contradicted her claim that he had been home with her during the critical morning hours. Detectives also traced a dark vehicle seen near Rooney Reuters condominium. The official appellet record says Yang had rented a black Volkswagen before the killing and returned it after driving just over 40 m. The investigation then expanded into preparation. Evidence presented at trial included driving directions connected to the area, books about silencers, and materials prosecutors said were purchased to construct one. Investigators also worked with Yang's friend Christy Passion. During recorded conversations at a Denny's restaurant, Yang described details of the killing. Prosecutors presented those recordings as a confession along with physical and circumstantial evidence they said corroborated parts of her account. Young has maintained that the recorded confession was false. Her postconviction attorneys argued that she knew she was being recorded and fabricated the story to protect her son. Those claims became part of her later effort to win a new trial, but they did not erase the conviction. The important distinction is this. None of that evidence was presented to Young in the early interview you have just watched here. Detectives were collecting the story. The confrontation, corroboration, arrest, and trial came later. Marne Yang was arrested on March 3rd, 2009. On March 15th, 2011, a jury convicted her of first-degree murder in Rooney Reutder's death and intentional homicide of an unborn child. She received two concurrent natural life sentences without the possibility of parole. Her direct appeal was rejected in 2013. Years later, Yang pursued postconviction relief and presented new defense arguments concerning forensic evidence, DNA, and the reliability of the recorded confession. On June 29th, 2026, Lake County Judge, Christopher Stride, denied her request for a new trial. Young's attorney announced that the appeal process had begun. As of September 2nd, 2026, no appellet court ruling on the merits of that new appeal had been verified. The convictions and life sentences remain in force. Beyond the investigation, the interrogation, and the years of litigation were Ron Rainroyer and her unborn daughter, Skyler Rain Royer Gale. Rooney was born on September 6th, 1965, and was 42 years old when she died. She had roots in Possi, Wisconsin, and had built her life in the Chicago area. >> [music] >> Rooney and Skyler are remembered here not as evidence in a case, but as a mother and daughter whose lives and [music] future were taken on October 4th, 2007.
