You killed two people. >> No, I didn't. >> On Monday morning, you killed two people. >> I did not. >> This is 20-year-old Jeffrey Hazelwood. He followed two teenagers, Natalie Henderson and Carter Davis, to the back of the supermarket and gunned them down in cold blood. And now he will do everything he can to convince the detective he is mentally ill. >> I don't know what to do. I don't know what's going on. >> Like thoughts in your head. [snorts] >> Okay. He's standing right over there. >> And despite the mountain of evidence stacked against him, what he did to the two teenagers was inhumane and deeply disturbing. >> You don't want to break something so that you can't walk anymore. That that's no good. [snorts] Um, so working on Sunday, you don't work on Sunday. You hung out with Kelsey. There are only three people on the property and two people are dead. On the early hours of Monday, August 1st, 2016, a delivery driver was making his rounds to a public supermarket in Roswell, Georgia. As he approached the rear of the building, he stumbled upon something horrifying and immediately called the police. >> Bravo 91. What's location emergency? >> Uh I I drive a truck and I deliver eggs to public grocery stores. >> Uhhuh. I just drove around the Publix over here at Kings Plaza and there looked like two bodies were laying behind the store beside some vehicles. >> Okay, tell me exactly what happened. >> Okay, so I was uh I delivered like I say Publix grocery stores. I was coming uh from from another public's uh just up the road there and I was coming in through the back to the loading dock and when I drove um back there there I noticed some vehicles sitting there and uh one of them had the trunk lid open. [snorts] I think it may have been a van. And then I noticed some people laying on the ground. And then when I was got a little closer coming by, I noticed uh they weren't moving. One of the bodies actually looked like it was naked. >> The driver reported that he saw two bodies lying dead, but by the time officers arrived, they were walking into a crime scene that looked like a planned murder carried out in the most precise way. The two victims were identified as 17-year-old Natalie Henderson and 17-year-old Carter Davis. They were lying on the ground just between their two vehicles, a dark-colored Toyota Corolla and a dark-colored Honda SUV. Both had what appeared to be gunshot wounds to their heads, and the manner in which officers found them was deeply disturbing. Carter was wearing black shorts, and Natalie was lying completely nude just a few feet from Carter. After securing the crime scene, detectives questioned public's employees, identifying their times of arrival to work. Because this was happening as early as 7:00 a.m., detectives wondered when both victims were killed, whether it was during the midnight hours or early in the morning around 2:00 a.m. After clearing the employees, detectives spoke with a female named Emma Caldwell, who told them Natalie had been seeing a male named Grant Thelen. According to Caldwell, Felen and Natalie had previously gone to the same location where the incident took place to perform sexual acts. At the same time, another detective pulled the cameras on the rear of the store and saw someone running along the road. The video also showed the suspect come back and enter the area behind the shopping center and stay for approximately 20 minutes. The suspect then left running back out toward King Road and approximately an hour later, the suspect, still wearing the same clothing, was seen returning to the area wearing a mask. The suspect stayed in the area for about 7 minutes and then left, apparently carrying something in his jacket. But by the time they checked another video camera at Leon Academy on King Road, one camera captured a silver SUV driving down King Road and park in a parking space in the public shopping center closest to King Road. While watching more of the layown academy video, detectives observed the suspect vehicle again traveling north on King Road and then pulling through the public shopping center driving down to the west side of the parking lot. But the investigation took a major turn when detectives noticed that Natalie Henderson's credit card had been used at the Flash Foods in Woodstock at Trickum Road and GA92. Pulling the video from the flash food station, detectives found out that the silver SUV was seen at the gas pumps and a suspect wearing a mask was seen filling up the vehicle and a gas can. The suspect was wearing the same clothing as the suspect in the UPS video and appeared to be wearing the same mask. The license plate for the vehicle was missing and appeared to have been removed, but the breakthrough came when detectives began going through the offline vehicle search results. They started with SUVs that returned to the Woodstock, Roswell, or Alpharetta area, as these were most likely to be familiar with the area. While running the checks, they ran a silver Honda passport. It had a Roswell address close to the incident location. Upon running the check, [music] detectives began researching the registered owner, Walter Hazelwood, who was clearly older than the suspect. But they found that Walter had a domestic dispute previously, which involved a Jeffrey Hazelwood. Running a check on Jeffrey, they found that he had the same address as Walter listed on his license. When they pulled the driver's license photo, they found that Jeffrey had long hair and was listed as 6'1 in and 150 lb. Based on the closely matching physical description and the tieback to the same type of vehicle, detectives responded to Jeffrey's address to see if the vehicle was at that location, but no silver SUV was visible from the street. Upon knowing he had a girlfriend, officers visited her home and found the vehicle parked in the street in front of the residence. Reviewing the cell tower data, they determined that Jeffrey's cell phone was hitting on the tower near the crime scene until 2:04 a.m. After that, the phone was either off or out of the cell tower range. They also reviewed his Facebook page and observed a photo with a male standing over a female lying on the ground. With Jeffrey as the prime suspect, detectives set up surveillance and watched him leave his girlfriend's residence and get into the silver Honda passport. Eventually, he was arrested at a Quick Trip gas station. But when a detective sat down with him, Jeffrey would feain an illness to deceive detectives into thinking he was mentally ill. >> You okay? >> No. What's going on? >> What's the matter? Why are you upset? >> Everything is falling apart. Now this is going I don't know what's happening. Okay. What's falling apart? >> Everything. [clears throat] >> Everything. Everything like what? >> My kicked me out on the first. [snorts] >> But before that, my hair just went to hell. >> Okay. >> And I couldn't do anything to fix that. I kept talking to >> Okay. Tell me. And I these things in my head go away. >> Okay. >> I don't know what to do. I don't know what's going on. >> Jeffrey's hands are shaking uncontrollably and he appears to be seriously ill. At one point, he points toward the corner of the room and tells the detective that someone is standing over there. It would be easy to believe he has no idea what is happening to him and that he isn't fully in his right mind. But Jeffrey knows exactly what he did and he understands the consequences that are about to come. >> Your what? What happened with your grandparents on the first? >> It's been going on for a while. >> Yeah. >> They came home from a trip and just told me that they were kicking me out by my birthday or on my birthday. >> When's your birthday? Okay. >> But I couldn't find an apartment that was available last time. So they sent to the first. We still couldn't find one that was available. I was going to call this morning cuz me and my wife really. >> Okay. So >> Oh my god. >> Okay. Okay. So, let me make sure that that I'm understanding what you're telling me. Okay. So, your grandparent came home from a trip on your birthday. >> August, I think, is when my day home. >> What? When? >> I think they home in August or July, but they gave me until my birthday. >> Okay. So, it was before your birthday when they got back from their trip >> and they gave you until your birthday. my shrink to convince them to extend it to the 1st of August. >> Okay. What's going on with finding a place? >> I called them or it was it's really beautiful and me and my wife just wouldn't love to live there. >> Yeah. Do you know the name of the place? >> Laurel at Greenwood in Canton. >> Okay. Whereabouts is that in can it do you know what road it's off of? >> It's right off of 575 I believe. >> Okay. Is that when you get off 575 and you go up that really big hill? >> I don't know. >> Is it that one? >> They I called them the other day. And they said they would call me back in the morning yesterday today, I think. >> Okay. [snorts] >> And they didn't. I was going to call them this morning before I got my shrinks appointment at 2 12:30. I think it's at 12:30 >> and [clears throat] schedule for me my wife to go up there because I'm off work the next 3 days. >> Okay. >> And we're going to go look at it and get the application. >> Yeah. So, you guys were checking out apartments like online and looking at the different rooms and all that that you can get. I have an app on my phone. [snorts] It's my wife here. >> Okay. Tell me your wife's name. >> Kelsey. >> Kelsey. [clears throat] >> Bottom. >> Bonum. Okay. So, y'all you guys don't have the same last name? >> We got married in our religion. >> Okay. >> Well, not legally, but it is. >> Okay. When did y'all get married? >> April 22nd. >> The 22nd of April. Jeffrey tells detectives that his grandparents kicked him out on August 1st, the same day as the murders. He had lived with them since he was just 18 months old, but claims his grandfather used to beat him with a belt, and that his grandmother, a Christian woman, always followed her husband's orders. According to Jeffrey, his grandfather once threw him against a wall and punched him across the face. But none of that changes what happened to the victims. And when the detective brings it up, Jeffree denies ever being there. on on the night of the first or when you left the house. Do you remember what time it was that you left the house? >> I left the house in the morning. It was like early. They weren't even up to date. It was like 7 or so. >> Okay. Was it still dark outside or was it light outside? >> I don't remember. >> Okay. >> I have a thing when I get to remember [ __ ] >> And was that okay? No, no, no. You use whatever language you want to use. I've heard it all. It doesn't bother me one bit. That sounds really >> occasionally I will use it myself but but I'll try not to. >> Um so was this on Sunday or Monday that you were going to be that you left in the morning? >> It was Sunday morning. >> It was Sunday morning. >> Yes. They go to church. >> Okay. >> I was stuck before then so I could just go. >> So you go just Yeah. And then where did you go to when you left the house? I went to the Shadish National Recreational Area. That's where we got married. >> Okay. So, just right down here, >> we have a uh we have a our spot we call it. It's a rock. >> Okay. >> I took her there even before we started dating, but she was with her other guy. She was really nice to her and it kind of makes me feel better cuz I'm being the same way. >> Okay. [snorts] Well, we're going to work our way up. I wanna I want to talk about every day and see what you can remember about every day until we get to today. Okay. So, we have uh Friday you did the graduation and then you took her out to eat at Olive Garden and after all of that, did you go directly back over to your grandparents? >> No. >> Or did you guys hang out for a while? >> Usually we hang out till later at night. >> Okay. >> Then I drive back. >> Okay. >> Like we uh we paint. She's getting me into painting. Okay. So, do you paint at her house or do you guys go somewhere? >> At her house. >> Very cool. Is she an artist? Is that something that she enjoys? >> Yes, very much. She She doesn't like it. >> She doesn't like her, but I love it. >> Okay. >> It shows her emotions >> a lot. I think a lot of artists don't. They critique themselves too much. [snorts] >> Um, so you guys hang out. You do maybe painting, hanging out until late and then you head back over to grandparents. Um, eding on Saturday. >> I don't remember. >> You don't know if you you Oh, you told me earlier that you worked on Saturday, >> did I? >> Yes, I did. If I had my phone, >> do you go in early on Saturdays or do you have a regular? >> I have a regular schedule. It's 2 to 11. >> Okay. So, you're an evening type person? >> Okay. >> Is that kind of your personality as an evening type person or like a night type person or >> Not really. I like to sleep. >> Okay. >> All right. >> I love sleep. So, are you an early burn? Like when the sun comes up, you're awake and ready to go? >> No. >> No. >> Okay. >> It's like [snorts] lately I've been passing out around Well, not late. Lately, because last night, >> so you usually go to bed? >> Usually I go to bed around like 2:30ish. >> Okay. >> Mhm. >> Okay. And then you don't get up with the sunlight in the morning. That is not something you enjoy >> because I have to I work till 11 p.m. I'm with Kel on the days I working with Kelsey until that time >> and then I sleep in as much as I can go. >> Yeah. So that you can laugh again until Okay, I got it. I used to work an evening shift. So >> the thing is I don't actually sleep at all. It's just kind of like laying there dozing. >> Yeah. >> I haven't slept in that long. >> Okay. >> Because of Do you take any kind of sleep aid medication or anything like that? >> I'm supposed to be taking medication, but I haven't done. >> Okay. Why now? >> Cuz it was affecting It's going to be embarrassing, but it was affecting my performance. >> Okay. >> With my wife. >> Is that something that you have talked to with your therapist, with your doctor that prescribes it? Cuz you know that there's I mean, >> yeah, tell him I'm taking my medicine, of course, but I'm not. >> Okay. Jeffree told his therapist he was taking his medication, but the truth is he wasn't. Instead, he had been saving it, and over time, he built up a large supply in his car. When the detective asks how many bottles he has, Jeffree admits he doesn't even know. So, what was the medication supposed to do? According to Jeffrey, it was meant to quiet the voices and stop the figures he saw all around him. If it worked, he would finally be able to ignore the commands and suggestions they kept giving him. And that leaves the detective wondering if those figures commanded him to kill Natalie and Carter. >> When you say that you don't know what's going on anymore, are you talking about in your relationship? Are you talking about in your life? Or are you talking about in this room or something else? >> All of it. >> Okay. >> I I know what I'm going to do out of here when I see my wife. >> Kiss your head. Okay. Okay. Well, we talked about last week and we talked about your weekend. Um, and now I would like to talk about Monday. Okay. Tell me where you were in the early [snorts] morning hours of Monday. >> I uh went back to my grandpa's house after I left her house. >> Okay. >> And got some stuff that I had left had my still had my key somewhere. >> But anyway, I went and got that and then I went drove back to the park next. >> Okay. Okay. So, we're going to do a timeline for Monday. >> Okay. Okay, >> I don't remember it much. >> Okay, that's okay. We can we can talk about it and and work on filling it in from what you do remember. So, my day >> was August 1st. >> Mhm. >> Okay. So, Sunday night you went to bed where? >> At my grandparents. at your grandparents. >> I think that was the first. >> That would have been the night of the 31st. >> Wait, is the Sunday the 31st? >> Mhm. >> Oh, then yes, I was asleep. >> Okay. Asleep at grandparents. >> And you got up Monday morning at what time? >> Um, I don't even remember now. >> Okay. Well, just think about it. It seems like after you think about something for a few minutes, you're you're kind of able to piece it together for me. >> I think it was. >> Okay. Do your grandparents work? >> My grandparent My grandpa has a handyman business. >> Okay. >> That he does by himself. It's just a little thing that he started after he retired. And my grandma, she stays at home. >> So, did you get up before they got up on Monday morning? >> Okay. And >> wait, I remember it wasn't um Sunday night, which No, it wasn't. Saturday. >> Saturday you said you had to work. >> Yes. >> So you worked 2 until 11 on Saturday? >> Yes. That's what happened. Um >> Did you go to Delies after work on Saturday? >> And you guys painted on Saturday? >> No, I painted for a little while and did stargazing. >> Okay. happened. We fought then to back to the house. >> Okay. >> And [snorts] we ended up having >> Okay. >> Sorry. >> That's okay. >> Then we went into her house and we're cuddling while she found the guy falling asleep and uh I had to leave. Left like around 2:30ish. >> Okay. >> Went back to my grandparents house. >> Okay. Now that I'm on a roll, don't. Okay, >> you go. >> Went back to my grandmother's house, picked up I think it was a jacket that I had left that I really liked. I think it was my girls jacket >> and uh I drove back um to the park and I just kind of sleeping. [clears throat] >> Okay. So, this was Saturday. [clears throat] >> Okay. >> Wait, >> or was that Sunday? I'm confused because that Saturday >> Saturday. >> Yes. I don't remember if I had my schedule. >> Oh, no. I work Saturday and Sunday. I remember. Yes. Work Saturday. So, what Sunday? >> Yes. >> Okay. So, Sunday regular. >> That's what happened on Sunday. >> Okay. >> Nice. >> So, Sunday night you worked your regular 2 to 11. Then I went and we uh painted. We went staring. >> Okay. >> Then we got mad >> and then I got to make all this up when I get up. Then um went back to um my house. >> On the night before the murders, Jeffrey was with his girlfriend. He left her house around 2:45 a.m. and went to his grandparents' home to pick up a jacket when the detective asks about that timeline. Jeffrey agrees he went there, but he continues to hide the details that matter most. >> Uh like 2:45 maybe at this point. Um did he have to like go find the jacket? >> Yeah, >> I mean it's pretty hot. >> I still have some stuff in the upstairs garage and like buckets and stuff. >> Okay, >> but I had to find the jacket. Then I was like yogurt. and yogurt. I kind of looked at my books seeing if I would have taken but no I don't have anything in my car. >> Okay. >> Kind of looked over just trying picking through seeing if there's anything [clears throat] else I need. >> Mhm. >> But it wasn't. So >> Okay. >> I went back over to park. >> Okay. So grandma and grandpa would was it cool with them that you came back over and picked this up or did you go in the middle of the night because you didn't really want to >> I don't really want to deal with it. him. >> Okay. >> Mostly. >> Okay. >> Not so not so great relationship there. >> Um, so did grandma know that you were coming? Did you tell her? No, >> they were asleep. >> Okay. So we you went, you said upstairs garage and then was the jacket up there. >> Yes, it was in I have a ban on what is it? Left top shots. >> Okay. >> On the this. >> Why do you need your jacket? >> I don't know. I just like it. >> It's so hot outside. I know, but I didn't. Because the last time they kicked me out, >> um they got rid of my bed. They threw out clothes. They threw out my books and my drawings and my writings and all that stuff. They just threw everything out. And >> so I kind of just picked through what I thought I would want and need. [clears throat] >> More of a need than I want, but I wanted it. >> Right. So that's basically what I took because I don't want any special things to be >> to get get rid of them. >> Yeah, that totally I can completely understand that. >> Um, did you find anything else in there that you needed? Did you take anything else or was that really kind of the focus of that trip? >> Okay. And then you snooped in the fridge and swiped some yogurt. >> All right. >> The peach activity I >> Okay. probably wasted like at least an hour. >> So you're just kind of toodling around over there for about an hour. >> Okay. So then with an hour from then would be 3:45ish. >> Okay. Where'd you go at 3:45ish after you jled around over there? >> I drove back to the park. >> Okay. And the park. >> Oh, go ahead. >> When I stopped at Creek Trip once um before I got to the park. interesting. >> What weird? >> What is it? >> It was a gun. >> Okay. At that quick trip right there at Mry Road. >> It was and I was going to smoke a cigarette up there and kicked it. >> Okay. >> Picked it up. Okay. lift it free. >> I mean, I could sell it because I don't have a lot of money. >> Uhhuh. >> So, I was like, okay, I can sell it, >> right? >> Okay. Did And so, you kept it >> cuz you were going to try to make some money. >> Mhm. >> Okay. Can you tell me what it looked like? >> It was black and it was one of the little shorts. >> Okay. Like one that you hold in your hand or one that you prop on your shoulder. Like one of the >> ones that not that big. >> No. Okay. >> You know. >> Okay. So, more like um you said it was black, right? So, did it have the spinning wheel thing on the side or did the top of it slide back? >> The top. It pinched me. >> Okay. How How did you pinch yourself? >> It pinched my finger. >> How did that happen? >> It got infected. I was playing with it and it like it went forward really fast. >> Oh, okay. So, you got your pinky stuck in the little sliding part on the top. >> Hurt. >> Holy cow. I bet. Did it bleed? >> It did, but it's more infected right now. >> Oh. Did you not put anything on it? >> No. I have a first. >> Okay. >> It's underneath all of my >> Okay. >> I don't know. So this night >> Mhm. >> you stopped by the QT after you leave Paris. >> I was going to smoke a cigarette. >> You had to run back. Did you go inside first or did you >> I did go inside. >> Okay. Did you buy your smokes at that point or >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> I mean I mean I'm being honest. >> Yeah. I'm I honestly >> I know I need to be cuz I don't know what the [ __ ] is going on here. >> I appreciate it. I want to talk about this gun though because it's kind of wild to me that you find a gun behind the quick trip. >> So you go inside and you buy your drugs. >> Um do you go to that quick trip a lot? >> Yeah. Whenever >> in the middle. >> No. No. Since it's just in the middle. >> Yeah. It's like like comes back from Kelsey's I usually stop there. >> Okay. >> Used to like smoke, >> but I like buy a drink or something else. Used a restroom most like most of the time. I have a bra at the criminal. >> After returning to the park, Jeffree said he found a gun at a store. But what he did with that gun is exactly what detectives need to find out. >> It was black. >> It was black. Was the handle black and the top black? Some of them are different colors. >> Yes, I think it was all black. >> Okay. Do Did you see any of the wording or the printing on the side of it? >> No. Usually they have like what kind it is and what kind of I was just thinking hey somebody left that there I know I shouldn't take it cuz I'm 20 and I think it's like 22 or something for disclos >> but um that was >> yeah sorry >> were there any bullets in the house >> there were okay did any of them when the flag was moving around I don't Are you how familiar with your >> with guns are you? >> I went shooting with my grandpa and I used to go hunting so I know all about that kind of thing. >> Gotcha. Okay. So, you know about the bullets and when the slide comes back it'll pop a bullet out. >> Yeah. >> It's a unsent round. It doesn't shoot. It's just a bullet that comes out. >> When you pull the slide back, did one come out? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> Did you find it? >> Yes, I did. Sometimes >> they're kind of hard to find sometimes when they fly off in the ground. >> Well, it flew up. >> Okay. And so you found it. You put it back in. Did you notice >> if the magazine was full? Did it have lots of bullets in it or >> It was >> okay. >> Did you know what kind it was? If you're familiar with guns, was it? >> Yeah. I think it was Do you remember what it was? It was a small A smaller caliber. >> A smaller. >> Not like a 45. >> Like a 22. >> No, not that small. >> Not that tiny. >> Not that. >> Okay. Those are pretty tiny. >> Yeah, those tiny. >> Okay. And then 45s are huge. >> Yeah. >> And then we have like a 40. >> And then we go down >> to what? Like the 9 and the 380. >> One of those. >> Okay. >> One of those. Three. >> Okay. >> Jeffrey claims he slept in the park on Sunday night and woke up the next morning to the sight of children playing. But what he doesn't know is that between the late hours of Sunday and the early morning of Monday, a camera captured him moving around the public store. >> I have your car on video. >> Driving by the incident location. >> I have you pulling into the parking lot where the incident occurred. >> Mhm. >> I have you getting out of your car >> and walking around a little bit. >> I have you walking towards where the incident occurred. And I have you on video where the incident occurred. >> Tell me why you were there when that happened. I'm scared to say something. It was awful. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Tell me what you saw. on the ground. >> Mhm. >> Blood was everywhere. [clears throat] >> What did you see? >> They were on the ground. They're there. >> Okay. Was there anything else around them? >> The cars. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Okay. Tell me about them. Give me some details of what you saw while you were back there. >> Well, not too close to where they were. >> And guy was in his boxers and the girl I don't know if she had on or not, but it was weird. >> Okay. >> And tell me what else you saw. Tell me about their cars. I just remember seeing part. >> Okay. >> And what did you do? [snorts] >> And where did you go? >> To the park. And then where did you go? >> Why did you come back? >> I thought maybe that seems real because a lot of the things that I see aren't real. A lot of the things I can touch are real. A lot of voices that I hear real. >> But it was real. And what happened that time jumper cables was jumper cables in it. I had the jumper cable on my own. Why wouldn't >> I wasn't because [snorts] >> in the middle of the night in an empty parking lot. How in the world are you going to jump your car off without another car? >> No, it was just in case cuz I was over there. I saw the jumper cables. >> What car did you get the jumper cables out of? >> The little wound. >> What color was it? >> It was darker colored. It's awful. And then where'd you go? [snorts] >> Okay. At what point in time did you go to the flash foods? [snorts] >> What? >> The gas station. >> What you mean? I don't remember this. >> Gas stations have video cameras. >> Mhm. >> Yes. >> I know what kind of car you drive. >> Yes. I have you on video and your car has a gas station across the street from your job. At what point did you go to the gas station? later. >> So, you left househ. >> Did you go straight to the Publix >> or did you find the gun at the quick drive first? I didn't film that later. I was on my way back to the park. >> Your timeline doesn't work. >> No. So, >> your timeline doesn't work. >> You say you found the gun, then you end up in the public parking lot, >> then you're going towards them. >> No, that was before. What was before? >> You went there before. >> You went there before you found the gun. >> Okay. I don't believe that you ever found a gun behind the QT >> because the employees hang out behind the QT and that's where they smoke their cigarettes and take their breaks. >> If there was a gun laying with bullets in a bag in a case, I'm pretty sure that one of the employees would have been able to see it. It's lit back there. >> Yes. How do you know she actually saw her? >> A handgun in a bag >> with bullets >> in a case. >> You don't think they would have seen it? >> I don't know. >> Where' the gun come from? >> No. >> Where's your grandpa's sig? >> What do you mean? >> Where is your grandpa's sig? >> I don't know. He looked all losing. >> We were doing really, really good at the beginning of our conversation >> and we were speaking and we were being honest with each other. >> And right now, what I need for you to do is just to be honest with me again because your your whole idea of what's going on in here right now has changed. What do you mean? >> A few minutes ago, the most important thing to you in the whole wide world was seeing Kelsey again. >> It is, >> right? >> It is. >> Okay. So, you think making up some story about stealing jumper cables? >> I'm not making up a story. >> And randomly walking upon being the only other car in a parking lot all night long with two dead people. >> I'm not making up a story. On the night of the murders, Jeffrey's grandfather's gun went missing. And by Jeffrey's own account, he spent more than an hour inside his grandparents' home. For detectives, every possibility points to one conclusion. He stole the gun. >> Who stole the gun from your grandpa's house? You were there the night that it was stolen. Who else? What's with you? >> What do you mean? >> I don't know. I didn't steal it. I didn't do any of that. >> So, that gun's not in the back of your car. >> The [snorts] the stolen gun from your grandfather's house is not the one that's in the back of your car. >> I just told you what's going on. >> Your grandfather's stolen gun >> is going to be in the back of your car, isn't it? >> I don't know. >> We already talked about the gun. >> It is. >> I think that you're being dishonest about where it came from. >> Oh, >> you already said that you were in possession of it. >> I already know that. >> I just need you to tell me where it came from. >> I found it. I didn't take it. Why can't you be honest with me about that? We've been honest with each other the whole time that we've been in this room. So, when I go and get the video from behind quick trip on the night you said you found the gun, you're going to be picking up a bag, taking the gun out, racking the flag, popping a bullet out, picking the bullet up, putting it back in the magazine, putting it back in the gun, and then sticking it into your trunk or in a bag in the back of your Is that the way that it happens? >> You think so? >> I don't know anymore. >> What did you do when you were at your grandparents house? >> You got your jacket. >> I think you got your jacket. >> You had your yogurt. At what point in time did you take the gun? >> You spent an hour there. It doesn't take an hour to eat yogurt. Each time detectives confront Jeffrey with the truth, he begins to shake and responds like a man who has no idea what he did. But Jeffrey can describe his girlfriend and everything they did together, right up to the moment of his arrest. That doesn't sound like someone suffering from memory loss. And detectives aren't buying the lie. >> I don't know her name. name. >> Whose name? >> The guy. >> The guy you gave it to? >> The guy you gave what to [snorts] >> the guy. He said he wanted to. >> Okay. >> Do you think he's the guy that shot him? [clears throat] No. I don't know. Who did you give the gun to? You don't know his name? Tell me what it looked like. >> All his name is Matt. >> His name is Mac. When did you give him the gun? [clears throat] >> Week ago. >> You didn't find it a week ago. You told me you found it on Sunday night. It's only t Wednesday. Hello. >> That guy. I don't want >> I don't want you going after her. >> Who? >> That guy. >> The guy you gave the gun to >> last week when you didn't have the gun yet. >> How soon? Your story is getting all messed up at this point. So, wait, wait. Before you say anything else, >> I want you to take a second. >> Every time Jeffrey keeps changing his story, but with the evidence now stacked against him, he has nowhere left to hide. >> What happened the first time you went back there? You saw the cars pull in and then you pulled in behind them and parked in a different area. Did you know them? >> No. >> Did you recognize them when you saw them? >> No. >> What about before they were covered in blood? >> You followed them into the parking lot. >> [laughter] >> I have you [clears throat] on video. I have you on video. Camera. There is a camera pointed at the parking lot. There are cameras around that entire shopping center. >> So, I have them pulling into the parking lot, you pulling into the parking lot. You park at a different location from where they park. You walk around your vehicle. You go towards them. You shoot them. >> Then you run away. You leave. And then you go to the gas station. Then you pump gas into your car and then into a gas can. Then you come back to the Publix. You park in the same general area as where you parked the first time. And you go back to the bodies. >> There was nobody else in that parking lot. >> I heard the shots. >> There was nobody else in that parking lot. >> If I have video of you moving all around, don't you think I watched the video before? There's no one else in the parking lot >> for hours for hours before they got there. There's no one else in the parking lot. All the businesses close. >> All the employees leave. >> No one walks onto the property. No one drives onto the property until they enter the property and then you enter the property. There are only three people on the property and two people are dead. >> I didn't [clears throat] return to my life. When did you give the gun to back? Not a week ago, cuz you didn't have it a week ago. So, try again. >> You told me you got the gun on Sunday. You just said to me that you don't want to get in trouble right now, lying to me. All it's going to do is get you in trouble. What happened when you got out of the car and went back there? What made you mad? What made you dislike them so much? What made you want to hurt them? >> What made what what about those people made you want to do that to them? >> I didn't You heard the shots when you were walking back there. I can see you firing the weapon. >> It's not you. Then who is it? You get out of your car. You walk back there. You stand there. You shoot them. And then you run back to your car. Tell me who else was there. >> Not me. Tell me who else was there then. >> I don't know. It came up. >> So, some invisible person shot them while you were walking towards them. >> Why'd you need to wear a mask? Did they know who you were? >> What do you mean? >> You were wearing a mask. The mask is in the back of your car right now. I saw it this morning. >> Which one? >> The Viva Vendetta mask. >> Yeah. >> I was scared the guy was still back there. >> Did you think the mask was not going to have him kill you if there's some crazy person back there with a gun? You thought you could put a little plastic Halloween mask on your face and you'd be okay. >> That's the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Jeffrey, are you kidding me? >> Why would you go back there? There's some crazy guy with a gun. You wanted to go back to get some jumper cables. Not cash, not jewelry, not anything expensive. You went back where people were murdered to get cable >> and you took jumper cables. >> And you took her wallet. Where's her wallet? >> You used her freaking credit card at the gas station. I'm not stupid. >> So you stepped over her bloody naked body and dug through her car and stole her wallet and you stepped over his bloody naked body and got his jumper cables out of the back or did you step on his bloody naked body? >> Did you step on him? >> You didn't step on him just like you didn't shoot him. So the invisible person shot him and stepped on him. >> What are you doing? >> Is that what he looked like when you got there? Or did you put him like that? [snorts] >> Does that jog your memory about what happened that night? This is what it looked like in the daylight. >> It was dark when you were back there. Who is he? >> I don't know. >> How did you know him? How did you know that they were going to be back there? How did you know that followed them in the parking lot? >> I didn't. I didn't. I was curious. >> You were curious as to what they were going back there for. >> So, you wanted to see where they were going, so you followed them back there. What did you see them doing when you got back there? see anything. [laughter] >> You walked behind the building less than a minute after they parked. >> So, you didn't see them doing anything. >> So, in less than a minute, the invisible person shot them before you could get from your car to their car while you're standing there the whole time with a gun in your hand. I don't think you understand that we have video. Did she look like this when you saw her? >> Did you put her like this? >> People don't fall down with their legs spread apart like that. >> I didn't do it. [snorts] >> [clears throat] >> So, I don't know what to think. >> What if somebody did this to Kelsey? [snorts] >> Then what? >> Then what? >> What would you want to happen to the person that did this to Kelsey? If this was Kelsey's picture and they [snorts] shot her and they laid her around naked on the ground and they spread her legs open and they touched her. What happens to that person that does that? >> You wouldn't like it. >> What would you do to that person? What should I do to that person as a police officer? What should happen to that person? >> What is bad? >> Just bad. >> I want you to look at her. Look at her in the daylight. You didn't get to see her in the daylight. >> Have you ever seen that much blood before? Did you know there was going to be that much blood when you shot her? She didn't shoot her. >> Who's on the video? >> Who's on the video? Walking from your car >> with the gun in their hand shooting her gun. I didn't [snorts] >> That's the story that you're going to stick to. >> That's it. >> That's what we're going with. That's where we're going with. So, you told me you don't have any family but Kelsey. >> These two. These two have family. What do you think their family wants to happen to the person who did this to them? >> Bad things. What kind of bad things? Should they go to prison forever? >> Should they go to the electric chair? >> You don't know. I don't know if it's still operational. >> It's not still operational. Okay. >> Is it? >> What's this on her foot? >> Do you know what that means? >> What is it? >> Is that your cigarette burns while you're touching her? >> Did you burn her feet? >> What? That's not I didn't do that. >> You didn't do that. >> Didn't do anything. >> You didn't do this, but you did this. >> No, I did not. You didn't make the marks on her feet, but you definitely made the big mark in her head. >> No, I didn't. >> That's what we're going with, right? >> You didn't do it. So, the video that I have of you walking from your car, walking back to their car, holding the gun, and shooting them in the head. >> You didn't do it. >> Okay. >> All right. What? >> I didn't do it is not a sufficient answer anymore because that's not true. >> It's not true. >> Where's the video? Can I see? My fellow detectives are working on uh some additional photographs >> um to attempt to persuade you uh that we know that it's your car, it's your body, it's your clothes in the back parking lot. So, here we have you walking in. >> That's you. >> Those aren't tacky pants. Those are blue jeans. They're in the backseat of your car. They have uh blood spatter on them. They don't. >> They do. That's what happens when you shoot somebody, especially when you're standing as close as you are when you shot them. Um, the blood splashes back and gets on you. Whether it's big drops or little drops, that's what happens. The red shirt that's in your car, the jacket that's in your car, the mask that's in your car, your car, not anybody else's car, your car. This is you when you ran away. That's you running away the first time after you shot them. Running away. >> You didn't shoot them. >> This is you coming back the second time with your mask on. Mask on. >> Because the bad guy would have gotten you. That's the story that we're going with. The invisible bad guy that looks just like you. >> Wasn't me. That was the first time. Here you are at gas station with the young lady's credit card filling up your car and filling up your gas can with her credit card in your mask. Why did you need to wear your mask at the gas station? >> He might have followed you. Is this the boogeyman? >> It seems like he's the boogeyman. Yeah. The invisible boogeyman that holds guns and shoots innocent children in a parking lot. >> Do you know how old they were? >> How old did they look to you? >> What do you mean? >> How old did they look? [singing] >> How did you know? into their truck. >> You went into their cars >> and you dug through all the bags that she had in her car and you dumped out her pocketbook. >> What'd you find in there? What'd you get out? >> You said that was in the console. Purse wasn't in the console. What do >> you mean? >> What'd you take out of the purse? >> The purse was on the console. >> The purse was on the console. >> Yes. >> And you got the wallet out. Where's the wallet right now? >> There is no wallet. There is no wallet. >> The blue wallet. No wallet. Where's your driver's license? >> Did you take it? Do you need to keep it? Did you need to save it? >> No. >> To show that you did what you did so that you could remember later that you did what you did? >> No. >> No. >> No. >> So, her driver's license is not going to be in your car. >> No. >> She throw it out the window. >> What' you do with credit card? Where's credit card? [snorts] Through it where >> through it where >> in the median >> in the median where >> 92 where >> give me a break. >> I don't remember. >> Was it on your way back over to Publix? >> You threw it out the window in the media. >> You were going to return the credit card, but then you came back the second time and took the jumper cables. So, was it better to take the jumper cables than than the credit card even though you already use the money on the credit card? >> That that's how you're going to rationalize that. >> You think you're a horrible person? Why is it that you're a horrible person? >> You robbed the dead. >> What about robbing them of their lives? >> I didn't. [clears throat] >> Are you kidding me? I'm sorry. >> A lawyer. A lawyer. A lawyer. There we go. >> May I? >> So, at this point, you want to speak to attorney? A lawyer? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> After Jeffrey invokes his right to an attorney, detectives wrap up the interview and he is transported to jail. He is charged with the murder of Natalie Henderson and Carter Davis. During his court appearance, Jeffrey's hands keep shaking and he continues looking around the room as if he is seeing someone. His attorney asks the judge not to read the charges to his client. [music] 20-year-old Jeffrey Hazelwood handcuffed his legs and hands shook uncontrollably at times. He even seemed to be talking to himself and petting something in his lap. >> In May 2017, Jeffrey Hazelwood pleaded guilty, but mentally ill, to the murders. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
