All right, I WITNESSED IT HAPPEN. >> [screaming] >> GET ON YOUR STOMACH. GET ON YOUR STOMACH. Get on your stomach. Get on your stomach. >> Just untie my belt. >> Okay. >> Two people had a fight in a car outside a glass studio in Wausau, Wisconsin. When it was over, the woman had five charges. The man had one. And a witness told police it was the man who'd been throwing the punches. The 18th of June, 2024. Just after 9:30 at night. Wausau police get a call about a physical fight between a man and a woman in a parking lot on Cleveland Avenue. An officer arrives and finds the two of them in a vehicle. He talks to the [music] woman. Another officer talks to the man. The woman is Anna Kosteky. And the first thing she tells the officer is that [music] nothing happened. She says there was no fight. She says he didn't hit her, and she didn't hit him. She says they just argued. Because she'd been drinking. The officer notes she's unsteady. Her eyes are glassy. And there's a strong smell of alcohol. The man is Matthew Heslip. He tells the officers nothing [music] physical happened between them, either. So, at this point, both of them are saying the same thing. >> Show me your hands. Put your hands on the wheel. Put your hands on the steering wheel. We're going to be on the east side of the Load 'N Go Glass. Show me your hands. Both of your Both of your hands. Both of your hands. >> My hands are right here, sir. >> All right. >> Okay. >> Unlock it. Anna, you're >> Step out. >> Anna, you're >> Step out. >> Step out. We just got a >> Yeah, what's going on? >> One second. I'm sorry. Um so, we just got a call that there was a physical fight between >> no physical fight at all, I promise. >> Nothing like that? >> No, nothing like that, sir. I'm all set I'm all good. >> So, so let me So, what's Why would someone think that there was a fight going on? >> It's because I was drinking a little tiny bit and I was a little bit upset, but I'm okay now, I promise. >> Okay. Did he put his hands on you? >> No, he did not. He never did, I promise. >> Okay. No, hey hey hey. Nope nope nope nope nope nope. >> down. >> We're staying over here. We're staying over here. We're staying over here. Okay? So, so there was like an argument or something or what? >> No, there was no argument. It's It's all good. >> It's all good. Are you just saying that because he's he's >> I was just trying to get her home. That's all I was trying to do. It's all I'm trying to do, officer. It's all I'm trying to do. >> I need you to settle down. >> I know, but that's why I'm letting you know what I'm >> Yeah. >> No, because this isn't >> That We're going to go over this way. We're going to go this way. Walk this way. Walk this way. >> I told her this was going to happen. DON'T MAKE A [ __ ] SCENE, YOU stupid [ __ ] >> Calm down. >> What's your name? >> Matthew Hasslip. >> Matthew what? >> Matthew Hasslip. H E S L I P HESSLIP HESSLIP >> YOU'RE GOING TO GO IN HANDCUFFS IF YOU DON'T COME DOWN. You understand that? >> Stop clapping. Stop doing this. >> No, I can do whatever the [ __ ] I want. I can do whatever the [ __ ] I want. >> We're going to put you in the car. >> All right, you can. You >> You're going to step in the car. You're going to step in the >> What is this? >> You're fine. You and you can. I understand. >> We're going to leave you in >> You know why I'm upset? >> We're going to leave you in custody till you calm down, okay brother? >> Hold on. She's drunk and she's upsetting me, dude. I've been dealing with this for month and a half now. I Just try to relax, dude. >> You put it in your back pocket. >> If you knew If you knew how many times I've been [ __ ] over by women, you would understand. >> What's she doing that's crossing Keep it for yourself. >> Drinking too much, acting a fool. >> Okay, what do you mean by acting a fool? >> Well, I don't know. What do you What do you expect that I mean? Don't you act like a fool when you're drinking? When you over drink? Can you loosen these a little bit, please? >> Why are you turning your wrist around Matthew? Why? >> What? >> You turned your wrist around Matthew. >> Well, I I cuz I'm showing you. I'm showing you. I'm showing you. They're just a little too tight. I'm I'm just I'm >> I can fit a full finger in there, boss. >> Dude, no you cannot. >> Stop turning your wrist in there. Watch. Whole pinky in there. >> Okay, I get that but it's like it's it's >> Okay, so then stop fidgeting >> It's grinding on the sides. >> Stop fidgeting with them. Keep them turned. They're not meant to >> All right. All right, yep. I'll just stop. >> No fight. Just an argument. If that were the whole story, this is a couple of disorderly conducts and everyone goes home. But a third officer is doing what officers are supposed to do at a scene like this. He's finding the person who actually watched it there, was a witness. A woman who'd seen the whole thing and called it in. She told the officer that she had watched Matthew hit Anna. Multiple times while they were in the car. That is the fact this entire night turns on and it comes from someone with no reason to lie, not from either of the two people who just told [music] police nothing happened. >> Calm down. It's okay. >> Anna, Anna, Anna. Don't yell at him. We don't need anything to escalate here, okay? >> I know. I'm trying to calm down. >> Okay. What's the last four of your phone number? >> No problem. I'm just going to try to get him out of this situation and then >> Okay. What's What's his first name? >> His name is Matthew. >> Okay. Do you guys live together? >> We do. >> Okay. Where do you guys live? No, don't walk away. >> Um we're about to live together and we're about to move. >> Yeah, we're about to. >> together currently? >> at the moment, but we're about to get a place together. >> Okay. Do you guys have any children in common? >> No, we do not. >> Okay. Are you guys legally married? >> No. >> No? Okay. So >> please just talk to him for a second and then can you guys stop talking? >> No. No, that's not how we're going to do things. >> I promise. Please. I don't want him to get arrested. Please, sir. >> Well, he's not under arrest right now. Okay. >> arrest, but he's going to get it. >> Hey. We're We're just trying to talk >> to if he continues to act like he's going to. >> It sounds like he's calmed down a little bit, okay? So, I'm not going to let you go over there to him, okay? And if you start to walk over there to him, I'm going to put my hands on you. >> The woman who said nothing happened had, according to the person watching, just been punched several times. Here is where it gets hard to watch and hard to square. Because Anna does not cooperate. She pulls her arm away. She won't put her hands behind her back. She's placed in the squad car and won't get her legs inside. Officers try to get her legs in. She kicks. At one point, according to the report, she kicks an officer's hand as he approaches with a hobble restraint. All of that is real and it's all on camera and it's why she was charged. But hold the other fact next to it. This is a woman who, minutes earlier, a witness says was being punched in a car. Drunk, denying all of it and now fighting the people who showed up. Both things are true at the same time. That's the whole case. >> I'm sorry. >> Turn around, put your hands behind your back. You're detained right now, okay? >> Okay. >> We do not do that. We do not slam car doors into other cars. >> I'm so sorry. >> go of your hand. Let go of your >> sorry. >> hands behind your Put your hands behind your back. >> I'm sorry. >> Put your hands behind your back. >> I did not mean to slam the car door. I'm so sorry. >> Well, now you've got damage to property, okay? >> No, it doesn't have any damage any damage to property, please. Please, sir, I did not damage any property. >> I told you this was going to happen. >> Sir, I'm so sorry. >> you this was going to happen. >> I did not I did not I did not damage any property property. I'm so sorry. >> I'm so sorry. I did not break any laws. >> Oh, you're not going to act like that and just get off. All right, lean against this car, okay? >> Okay, I'm sorry. >> Okay. >> I did not damage any property to any car. >> There there's a giant scratch on the side of the car right there. >> it? >> I I saw it, all right? I witnessed it happen. >> No, I'd rather see it before I see it because I don't believe you. >> Okay, cool. >> I already ran I already ran it. >> I did not do anything wrong. I did not BREAK ANY LAWS. I DID NOT BREAK ANY LAWS. >> STEP BACK. STEP UP. >> OKAY, PLEASE. I DID NOT BREAK any laws. I did not break any laws. >> Turn around. >> I did not break any laws. I did not break any laws. Please let go of me. Please let me go. Let me walk home. Please. I did not break any laws. I've literally been so compliant with my probation cuz I don't understand. >> Stop. >> It's >> Put your hands behind your back. >> No, it doesn't understand why you're why you're doing this to me. >> Back in the car. >> I didn't do anything wrong. Sir, I didn't do anything wrong. >> Back in the car. >> I DID NOT DO ANYTHING >> BACK IN THE CAR. >> [screaming] [screaming] [laughter] [screaming] [screaming] [screaming] >> STOP KICKING. [screaming] KICKING. STOP KICKING. Calm down. >> [screaming] [screaming] >> She was taken to the ground to be controlled then transported to the Marathon County Jail. And this is where the two arrests SPLIT COMPLETELY. >> KNOCK IT OFF. GET ON YOUR STOMACH. Get on your stomach. Get on your stomach. Get on your stomach. >> Her shoe stuck in my belt. >> Knock it off. >> Her shoe stuck in my belt. Her shoe stuck IN MY BELT. >> [screaming] [screaming] [screaming] >> YOU'RE HURTING MY ARM. >> YOU'RE hurting my arms. You're hurting MY ARMS. PLEASE LET GO. PLEASE LET GO. PLEASE LET GO. PLEASE LET GO. >> [screaming] >> PLEASE LET PLEASE LET GO. YOU'RE HURTING ME. YOU'RE HURTING ME. YOU'RE HURTING ME. >> Just breathe. IT'S NOT SOMETHING TO >> LET [screaming] GO. >> JUST BREATHE. ANNA. ANNA, BREATHE. >> [screaming] >> BREATHE. >> LET GO. LET GO. THEN YOU WILL NOT BE HURTING ME, YOU STUPID [ __ ] >> ANNA. >> YOU STUPID [ __ ] PLEASE LET GO. PLEASE LET GO. I DON'T DESERVE THIS [ __ ] I DID NOT DO ANYTHING WRONG. I DON'T DESERVE THIS [ __ ] I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING WRONG. >> NOW, I'm going to tell you one time you just kicked my hand. >> Okay, then punch me, [ __ ] I will sue you. >> You're good. >> You will sue you. I will sue you for thousands of dollars. I WILL SUE YOU. >> GET YOUR LEGS IN GET YOUR [screaming] LEGS IN THE CAR. GET YOUR LEGS IN THE CAR. THERE YOU GO. >> I WILL SUE you for thousands of dollars. >> Chris. >> Yeah, [ __ ] YOU, [ __ ] >> [screaming] >> PLEASE. >> [panting] >> PLEASE, JUST PARK OVER. Before you detain me, excuse me. Excuse me. Excuse me. Excuse me. HELLO. [screaming] HELLO. >> [screaming] [screaming] [snorts] >> EXCUSE ME. I DID NOT drive illegally. I did not drive illegally. Sir, I did not drive illegally. >> [screaming] [crying] >> I DID NOT DRIVE ILLEGALLY. Unless you can walk on your own. >> You're going to put me in my chair? >> Can you walk on your own? >> I promise I'll walk on my own as long as you don't touch me. >> If we have to use this chair >> Don't touch me, please. >> As long as you can walk on your own >> As long as you don't touch me. As long as you don't touch me. [music] I will escort you as long as you don't touch me. I promise you that, sir. You're not going to touch my arms, otherwise I will not come. I'm big. [ __ ] I don't want you to [ __ ] touch me. [ __ ] YOU. >> YOU HAVE TO GO AROUND THE OTHER SIDE THERE CUZ IF YOU COULD just sit still, we're going to put you in the chair safely, okay? >> Okay. I don't want to walk, but I feel like you want me to because you are [ __ ] pigs. >> Yep. >> You are [ __ ] pigs, but you got your job. I won't get my job off of you [ __ ] pigs. Yeah, you guys can suck up to the [ __ ] murderers and stuff. And all stone cold killers and stuff. Yeah, you guys can suck up to the all [ __ ] and all like, "Oh, yeah." >> Sending body word down in >> I'm doing the wrong [ __ ] body. Yeah, and then you can send them drugs. And then you'll all be happy. No. No. >> Sending body word down in 10 seconds. >> I've only been [ __ ] you. Fighting with Anna. Sending body word down in 5 seconds. >> Suck them off to the [ __ ] that don't deserve them. I send them to the [ __ ] that do deserve them. IT'S [ __ ] [ __ ] IT'S [ __ ] CAR! >> [screaming] >> IF YOU'RE WILLING TO START with a damn statement, I'm going to have you hop out for me. >> I haven't done anything wrong. I'm sorry. Can you advise me, sir? >> If you're upstairs, we'll readjust the straps once we get to the patrol car. >> What did I do wrong? Take them off. Can you help me out? What did I do wrong? What did I do wrong? >> Anna Kostetsky was arrested for disorderly conduct, resisting an officer, battery to law enforcement, and felony bail jumping because she had an open case at the time with a probation hold placed on top. She was also cited for underage drinking. Matthew Hesslip was arrested for disorderly conduct. One charge. The registered owner of the damaged car didn't want to pursue anything. So, here's where the night landed. A witness told police she watched a man punch a woman several times in a car. The man was charged with one count of disorderly conduct. [music] The woman, the one the witness says was being hit, was charged with five things. Because she was drunk, because she denied it, and because she fought the officers who came to help. None of that means the officers were wrong to arrest her. She did resist, and battery on an officer is battery on an officer. It just means that the person a witness saw being punched is the one who left in more trouble. >> [music] >> And that's worth sitting with. Anna Kostetsky and Matthew Hesslip were both charged. Both are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
