deal with hostile pedestrians it's more
complex than you might think especially
when it appears alcohol is involved and
although you're there to enforce the law
you have to remember to stay calm and
use Clear communication police have to
give them space to speak their minds use
active listening so they know that
they're being hurt a while back I
responded to a pedestrian investigation
and I must have gotten about five calls
of a woman Corner outside of a 7-Eleven
and the computer stated that she was
harassing customers now as I pull up I
notice that the woman is agitated and
walking back and forth so I walk up
slowly and asks if she's okay and she
begins crying but in a childlike manner
although I didn't get much out of her I
could tell that my presence did calm her
down somewhat and I quickly learned that
she had some intellectual disabilities
now thankfully her parents did show up
and explained that she wandered away
from home the parents then transported
her back home but that taught me to
approach every situation with empathy
first because you can always turn up
later if you have to now today we have a
case from Round Lake Beach police in
Illinois and they respond to a mail
allegedly causing a disturbance outside
of a grocery store and we quickly see
because of the body camera that he might
be a problem and the officer was calm
cool and collected however the male soon
lets the officer know how he feels about
the police which is fine the male then
walks away but it never ends that easy
he comes back and tells the officer to
do something that I probably heard many
times during my career now keep in mind
this m had every opportunity to leave
but he stays there just disrespecting
the police and the officer even offers
the mail a ride home and the police were
more than patient but he literally gets
in the officer's face and to be honest
in my opinion it seemed like this guy
wanted to get arrested and that's
exactly what he got this suspect was
charged with aggravated battery to a
peace officer and disorderly
intoxication he is innocent unless
proven guilty in a court of law
