A second angle captured by a bystander
reveals that the officer fired as the
suspect was carjacking a woman parked at
the nearby
laundromat. Officers began life-saving
measures while district fire and EMS
were called to the scene. Officers also
recovered the knife the suspect used to
slash at the officer. Despite the
responders efforts, the suspect was
pronounced dead. He was later identified
as 29-year-old Surafhil Zerhan from
Northwest Washington. Other than a few
speeding tickets, Zerhan has no known
case history, and the motivation behind
his attack on the officer remains a
mystery. The officers were placed on
leave with pay pending the results of an
internal investigation in accordance
with departmental policy.
