Around 40:40 p.m. on May 28, 2025, officers Alexander Miller and Leroy Sherrod with the Hoboken Police Department were dispatched to a report of a shoplifting at ShopRite on 900 Madison Street. Officer Miller first arrived on scene around 44:7 p.m. and walked upstairs to the loss prevention office. The alleged shoplifter was identified as 39-year-old Gina Gonzalez Diaz. She tried to justify her actions by claiming that she forgot to pay for some of the items. All right, how's it going? No, not yet. Not yet. Ah. All right, long story short, um she concealed $142 worth of items and she didn't pay for them at the register. And then she was apprehended at the vestibule. Okay, she passed the point of sale? Yes, yes, sir. Can you uh if you just have the footage up real quick, that'd be uh appreciated. Um When he first approached me So I I explained to him. He said I'll talk to you in 1 second, okay? I'm going to talk to him first and then I'll talk to you. All right, so 3:32, she was with this group of females which she's saying is her cousin. She paid for this stuff. All right. 100%. Mhm. Then they broke apart and then she came alone back in the store and selected more items which she didn't pay for which that's $142 and I'll gladly show you. I was in the pants. I was on the phone with my sister that has COVID and I probably forgot. I don't know. I'm human. How can I remember everything that I'm doing? And then you selected 3:32, correct? >> [singing] >> So 3:32, normal purchase, fine. Normal purchase, fine, with her cousin so whoever the females are, two of them. Um then she goes right here by herself. She orders, you know, happy, you know, Coke products by herself alone. And then she comes here and and grabs the sushi afterwards. I didn't know if you were getting sushi. Okay, and then And then after that she goes aisle two and three. >> [cough] >> Can I ask you a quick question? Are you going to arrest me because I don't have anybody to take my kids? I just have a quick question. Um yeah, we're uh going to discuss our options in a second. Okay, because if you don't understand, I'm a single mom of two and I have two children and I have nobody to take care of my kids cuz my mom has COVID and my sister, too. Maybe look, maybe I got distracted cuz I'm talking on the phone with my sister that has COVID. >> Who were um Those are my cousins. They work in Dunkin' Donuts. >> to assist you? Well, I'm calling them but you're going to take me to jail for I I uh Cuz I can call somebody that can send me money. I can pay for the items. I don't have a problem. I understand but do you understand me? I I I have to take my son to a neurologist appointment on Friday and I'm a single mom of two. I don't have nobody to help me. So you're going to take me to jail? Like really? We're we're going to discuss some options in a moment, okay? And then all those items from aisle two and three about 3:50. If she was on aisle two and three and then conceals all those items Put them in the same bag with the already purchased groceries. Uh there's multiple bags. Understood, okay. And then can you just show me her leaving the business? Um so after she concealed all those items, $142 worth of items, she goes to register two where she only pays two items on register two. I'll gladly show you that here. This? And then one candy that's right. All right, okay. I told you what I paid for. Two items. And then and obviously we apprehended her at the vestibule. Okay. You know, she just paid for two items that she just got from the work. No, so this item right here is um tomatoes and then one candy or bubble gum, whatever that is. And then the rest concealed that she just grabbed never came out. But that's the $142 she didn't not pay for. Okay, did you get it? That's what we stopped her in the vestibule. Is there a way that I can pay a fine or something because I have two small children I take to school. Do you have any history like in any other ShopRites or here? >> I've never stolen anything in my life. So listen to me. Listen to me. Listen to me. If you do come with us right now Mhm. we're just going to do some paperwork. You'll be in the police department for like 2 hours. You'll be home tonight. >> I have to can you escort me so I can get my son out of school? He's in school right now. >> Where is he? Okay. If I if I go 2 hours I still have >> Hold on 1 second for me. I have a son that has autism. Hold on 1 second. A receipt printout of all the items that Gina attempted to steal indicated that the total value of unpaid items was $142. Officer Leroy Sherrod then arrived on scene to assist. The loss prevention employee showed Officer Miller the surveillance footage. The cameras revealed that she initially entered the store with her cousin, S, as she claimed. She paid for all her items that time and left the store. Later that day she returned to the store with her daughter and allegedly concealed stolen items among the other items that she had already paid for. Call Duke McCourt. What's up, Sarge? Um there's going to be a 25 here. She has uh a daughter with her. She does not have anyone available anywhere in the world that can take care of her and she also needs to pick up her son from school from after after school program. Um she was due to pick him up already. She's already late. Um the kid looks maybe seven or eight and I don't know how old the son is. Um uh let me find out for you. What Where is your son now? In Branch. In uh Branch school. If I can pick up my son from school and they can go with me, I will go with you. It's not a problem. I don't have a I don't have a babysitter. Yeah, the the thing that's upsetting me is she was here an hour ago, paid for normal batch of groceries with cousins and then she re-entered the school or I'm sorry, the store and concealed items in the purchased items already, and then now those apparently those cousins are nowhere to be found and unable to be contacted. In the back, okay. Okay. Okay. All right, I'll explain that right now. Thank you, sir. Give me It got me Okay, I'm distracted. Um can you just get his name real quick? You You know what? You know his pedigree? Hold on a So, can I get my son from school? >> Hold on one second, please. Okay. And then this is the receipt we need. Okay, so these are the items that were paid for, all right? This is 14220. >> All right, that's it. Okay, perfect. Thank you. I'm going to explain to you what's going to happen right now, okay? Um I'm going to give you two options. Either way, you're going to come to police headquarters and we're going to do some paperwork. Do you understand? Just hold on one second, let me finish. So, you're going to come to headquarters with us. Um she could ride in the back with you, or she We have two police cars here. If she could ride with the other one of us who has to drive >> can stay with me. >> And then one of us are going to pick up your son and also bring him to the police department, okay? Okay. We'll obviously nice, respectful, everything. Hold on one second. What's up, Serge? I was also informed uh highly autistic. Yes, I will uh get the pedigree. Correct. I will get the pedigree. Just do me one favor quickly. Um Do you want my name and my address and everything? Nope. All I need is actually your son's name and what whatever teacher he's usually with right now. >> Okay, well he's in after care. His name is So, I'm going to send his name to my boss so he could go pick your son up and um bring him up to the police headquarters with you. >> I don't know where he's going to meet me at. Okay, that's okay. So, your son will be meeting us at headquarters. We're going to do some paperwork together, and then uh you should be able to leave uh later tonight. Have you ever been arrested before? I've never been to jail in my whole entire life. >> then You can check my name up. It's not a problem. So, what we're going to do is No, I've never been to jail. I'm I'm being honest. >> You You even The the system will speak for itself if you're lying to us. I'm just saying hypothetically. Um Routinely, what happens now is you're going to come to the police department with us. We're going to do some paperwork, and you'll be home in a little while. Okay, it's not a problem. Um I'm going to ask you to stand up now. I'm going to have to place some handcuffs, okay? Okay. Uh just take your bag off first. This? Yes, ma'am. Let me put my keys in there. Do you want this blanket? What's up, Serge? Hi, how are you? What's your name? It's a very pretty name. Okay. I do have to cuff you behind your back. I'm sorry. >> [snorts] >> Um I'm just going to have to pat you down, okay? And this wrist, wrist? Okay, all right. All right, yeah.
