it all depends on what phase of training
uh the recruit officer is in um my
recruit officer now he's in his first
phase so I have to assist him quite a
bit and and eventually during third
phase uh the cadets or the the recruit
officers are actually uh doing all of
the uh uh call himself I'm just
observing at that point we're on route
to a commercial burglary
call so it looks like uh if the the
building has not been cleared yet we're
going to have to uh call canine out and
uh we'll have to do a search of the
building with the K9
unit when we uh arrived here we did meet
up with the uh uh the owner or the uh
the manager of the place and he advised
me that uh he arrived to work uh earlier
this morning and found the front door um
damaged it looked like somebody hooked a
a chain up to the security gate gate and
pulled it off the uh the the railing so
they were able to access the doors after
uh throwing a rock through the the
window we actually have a policy uh
people are supposed to exit the vehicle
or the the building and uh and so we had
them uh evacuate the building uh and
then since it was such a large building
uh we have to make sure that there's
nobody hiding uh in the uh the business
uh there has been several uh times when
there's been people found uh hiding
inside the business after the uh
responsible party had called police and
we never caught them so we had to call
out the uh the canine unit and the
canine unit uh had to to check the
entire building which took some time um
of course it's a step-by-step process
that the cadets and we all learned it in
the police academy we have to take it
very slowly and uh and we have to just
be very methodical about the our our
searches with the dog especially field
investigators are called out on all
burglary calls to make sure that uh they
can try and collect any kind of forensic
evidence uh that's available at the
scene recruit officer now is uh
collecting hopefully some security video
from uh the security cameras that are
installed inside the building um he's
also collecting information on how much
some of the value of the stolen items
were and how much of the uh the the
items were stolen from the the
business the recruit officer now is um
just learning how to uh take these type
of calls and uh just make sure that he
gets all the information collects all
the information for his police report
and uh and just make sure that he he has
everything involved in the call covered
of course I have to show him and make
sure that he uh he holds off of just
going into a business like in this type
of call during a burglary just walking
in himself and uh he needs to make sure
that he has another officer here with
him and they need to stay uh stand by
until a a tactical uh canine unit uh can
assist him uh with these type of calls
yeah phase one entails at least uh
20% uh of the uh all the police work uh
they do themselves so uh we're we're
kind of looking at uh about an 8020 uh
uh type of work environment he does uh
20% himself uh and I pretty much show
him about 80% of the the job myself
so uh the department doesn't mind us uh
taking calls Citywide uh if it is a call
that uh would be a a good call for uh
newer officers to take uh you know if
there was a say a dead- on arrival call
or uh u a call that's very rare like uh
maybe even a homicide call we can go out
and take primary on those type of calls
um and uh and so the recruit gets as
much uh field training experience on a
variety of different calls um just
really improves the uh the whole
training and and it gives these
recruits a better uh feeling of what
it's like when they get out on their own
without a fto
around
