this police chief was just fired and his entire police department was deactivated just a few hours ago the city council in tiny coffee City Texas voted unanimously to fire its police chief and deactivate the entire police department until a new Chief can be hired oh no we ever do without being tyrannically oppressed every day this is a follow-up to a video that I did about two weeks ago where this investigative team for KHOU you did a great job uncovering this criminal activity going on in coffee City Texas the police chief's name is John J Portillo he had some kind of outstanding criminal record and a warrant and the city council didn't know about it well John Jay Portillo this police chief was hiring all these other criminal bad cops with Horrible Histories where they got terminated from other departments but I want to show you this because this is true investigative journalism with a follow-up and by the way these cops there were 50 cops to 250 residents that's one cop for every five residents in coffee City Texas check this out up first tonight breaking news from the K2 u11 investigates team just a few hours ago the city council in tiny coffee City Texas voted unanimously to fire its police chief and deactivate the entire police department until the new Chief can be hired so the police chief got fired and the entire police department got deactivated that is music to the ears of anybody who's had their rights trampled by badge wearing Thin Blue Line tyrants this comes after khu-11 investigates uncovered questionable practices in the department in a series of reports Jeremy Rogowski is in coffee City tonight with the exclusive update Jeremy the coffee city council took less than 15 minutes to reach its decision it means this Tiny Town of 250 people that once had 50 officers on the force now has none in one year they had written over 5 100 tickets this is for only 250 residents 5100 tickets for a total cost of it was like a million and seventy five thousand dollars it was a ridiculous amount for so few people in that town coffee City Council Members took Swift and serious action look at the it's the city council right there they got these lifetime folding tables in these chairs is just funny after what cage you'll have an investigates uncovered a police department that routinely hired cops with troubling work histories hired by a chief John Jay Portillo there was public intoxication family domestic abuse child endangerment there was crazy crimes on these people's Records who had an unresolved criminal charge and who launched a questionable warrant division with officers who didn't even work in coffee City where's he getting this money where's he getting the money to hire all these cops a questionable warrant division they were all Moonlighting almost every cop including the police chief was Moonlighting going to other towns even as far as 200 miles away to you know do other jobs that he said was earning these cops an additional 60 to 80 thousand dollars a year there was things that we weren't aware of and that just like really opened our eyes that you know and I don't have a problem with Moonlighting it just that when the cops Moonlight they take their tyranny from their own town to another town There's major changes that got to be made and made quickly this is the man who hired them Chief John Jay Portillo quadrupled the Department's size since he took the job two years ago he says to provide 24 7 coverage for the town why would you hire so many people with all these red flags there's more to just what's on paper and that's where I rely on my captain and my background investigators to go in and dig and say hey what's up what's the truth behind this the chief says criminal charges were often dismissed dishonorable discharges overturned he claims most applicants hired got on the wrong side of agency politics if you go back to the totality of a lot of these officers stuff I would say 75 percent or not more they're being retaliated against from their agency retaliate why would you take a chance chief I tried to look at the good in everybody and I believe everybody there's an opportunity you give a lot of opportunities yes we do yes we do he gives a lot of opportunity to potential Boys in blue but he's not going to give an opportunity to me and you the opportunity to wear a badge allows his officers to work extra jobs which can mean real money fifty dollars an hour or more I mean let's not hide it from anybody they're making probably about 80 to 100 000 a year doing that Portillo had tried to email his resignation before the meeting but council members refused to accept it and try to get this guy right here trying to it's okay I'll tender my resignation right now let's see uh and they wouldn't accept it because they're like no no we don't accept that you quit you're fired outright fired the chief and in a bombshell move it also voted to deactivate the department as a whole we just felt it was best to basically terminate the program that way we're able to go out find a new Chief let him do all the proper evaluations and determine if he wants to rehire anybody or just start from scratch terminate the program so you got coffee City out there until they hire this new police chief who's in turn going to hire you know better officers you got coffee City the boot of tyranny has been lifted from their necks The Thin Blue Line boot of tyrannical oppression is gone thanks to the city council very interesting development here the action was welcome news for many residents who say of course they've lived with over aggressive policing for too long ever since we moved here it was every day caught pulling in for one reason or another something needed to happen that's for sure you know what that reminds me of it reminds me of Brookside Alabama remember Brookside Alabama and a lot of First Amendment Auditors went up there to find out what was going on they had all these cops they had all this equipment they had like six million dollars worth of fines they were issuing there was four fines for every household in Brookside Alabama they had this mrap out there armored vehicles military surplus equipment the Henderson County Sheriff's Office will respond to calls for the time being as for the 50 full-time and Reserve officers we're told they will not be allowed to perform police officer activities unless or until they're picked up by another department finally we reached out to John Jay Portillo for comment we have not heard back imagine my shock they tried to reach out to John Jay an old John Jay is like well not only do I tender my resignation but I'm going to make myself unavailable this is the guy right here what do you say I think k-h-o-u did a great job that is true investigative journalism when you can get a response like this out of the community out of the city council and you can get that police chief gone and all 50 officers done and the entire force deactivated you've done a positive thing for society but leave your thoughts about this do you think the city council did the right
