stop you just left walmart do you need to be arrested right now no no no okay why are you doing this ma'am hey stand up we're not going to hold you what are you doing get out of here this is not your business it's not good this is what happens when you fight the police i have to use force to safely detain her so when i went to go grab her and talk to her she started running leaving pulling away from me trying to fight me well that's the thing i didn't see it running welcome back to the lackluster channel few stories are submitted multiple times to me this is one of them it's been nearly a year since karen garner was forcefully arrested by loveland police officers after she left a walmart with 14 of unpaid merchandise and now an independent investigation has been launched karen is a 73 year old woman with dementia and sensory aphasia an inability to understand spoken and written speech on june 26th 2020 karen walked to a nearby walmart from her home and wandered out of the store without paying for several items she was stopped by walmart employees and the items were recovered she was denied an opportunity to pay for the merchandise and left the store on her way home she stopped to pick some wildflowers and officer hop of the loveland police department arrived on scene all right let's stop ma'am i don't think you want to play it this way ma'am police stop you want to stop the lights on siren stop you just left walmart do you need to be arrested right now no no no okay let's stop it appeared fairly obvious that karen wasn't alert and oriented when asked why she didn't stop she only responded with a blank stare and mumbles incoherently fearing for his life less than 30 seconds into the interaction officer hop escalates the stop and goes hands on forcing karen's hands behind her back and taking her frail 73 year old 5 foot tall and likely less than 100 pound body to the ground as she continues to mumble incomprehensibly it is likely that this is the moment her arm was fractured and wrist was sprained she's probably like 4 10 5 foot maybe like 100 pounds no no no on the ground stay on the ground after a short struggle she's now detained all right let's stand up stop officer hop then yanks karen to her feet and pushes her towards his cruiser as he waits for backup confused and afraid karen struggles telling officer hopp that she wants to go home instead of attempting to communicate with her the officer pushes her arms upward dislocating her shoulder eventually officer jalali arrives on scene and continues to brutalize the 73 year old until she appears to collapse from pain which prompts the officers to slam her back to the ground hey stand up we're not going to hold you around neither officer has attempted to speak to her yet and they eventually get her into the cruiser and a passing driver stops to address the officers what are you doing get out of here this is not your business who's my sergeant yeah okay well first i can tell you that sergeant metzler he's at the police department you can go talk to him if you have an issue yeah give me your car so i can put a report okay i see you saying there how you throw that little kid little kid well i don't know about a little kid he was stole from walmart and refused to stop refuse to listen to lawful orders and to fight me this is what happens when you fight the police i have to use force to safely detain her that's what this is this isn't just some random act of aggression oh well i don't know if you realize that yeah well the way that i see it from over there you know i was like doesn't know but you see you don't know the whole situation that's the thing yeah you know but he's like but knowing the situation do you feel differently now oh yeah but you're not like siena from there that that guy just walking yeah i get that i get that so when i went to go grab her and talk to her she started running leaving pulling away from me trying to fight me well that's the thing i didn't see it running so before you go to a snap judgment you gotta get all the facts but right here she wasn't running i get that i see it walking right there you pull over i gotta deal with this you hang tight okay the officers continue to struggle and opt to put karen in hobble restraints sergeant metzler arrives on scene and officer hopp explains his version of events hey we're gonna sit in the car okay yep so i went up i found her oh did we catch her here walking on foot yeah she's walking right here i hit my light siren she kept walking said please stop stop she looked at me kept going saying no i'm going home so i went up to grab her started pulling away from me and stuff like that so i was by myself so i went to the ground we struggled and rolled for a little bit um i see that yeah yeah and then i got her detained she showed up while i had her up against the car because i couldn't get her in the car and right all that stuff so we struggled over there for a little while and then we brought it into this car because mine was locked and she wouldn't get in she'd get in wiggle out get in wiggle out all this stuff and then finally right you know let's get to the ground get her in a hobble she's been drinking or something i have no idea she hasn't talked to me much okay all right good all right um let's get around the station yeah go from there so we have i still need to figure out what we have there okay just you want him to go you want to follow to go over there because they got the property back from before she left okay from the shop looking yeah yeah will you go over there and see what yeah what she's how much what how much all that jazz yeah you guys were you guys talking to anybody over there no i just came here because she left and i found her all right i'll go over there [Applause] all right and i'll meet you guys down tomorrow cool thanks you guys real good yep we're good you're a little muddy dude i think we're doing this bloody and little money that's caught right is the blood on her yeah that's our blood you're not bleeding are you this is zoo oh he probably wants to talk to you he just showed up and started telling me asking us yeah i've explained in the situation he's a lot better now oh you were good had her handled if it was a big dude had been different but she was like 20 pounds oh yeah just a credit card sergeant metzler berates the bystander that witnessed the event even though the sergeant hadn't been present for the encounter himself are you okay karen was taken to a jail and charged with theft of less than fifty dollars obstructing a peace officer and resisting arrest the larimer county district attorney agreed to dismiss the case in august 2020 but in a recent statement officials from the department said that they only heard about the incident as a result from a recent lawsuit i for one don't buy it karen was left in a cell for six hours and was denied medical assistance according to the lawsuit she's a frail little thing but she's riley i was gonna pay for it but you didn't freaking everybody okay anybody get kicked or hit nope she's a frail little thing but she's riley we will have to wait and see the outcome of this lawsuit in the meantime officer hobbs has been placed on administrative leave officer jalali and sergeant metzler were both moved to administrative duty pending an investigation and the last thing that i'd like to point out is the department's facebook page almost all of the training pictures involve violent force hand-to-hand combat dogs and lots and lots of ranged days nowhere does the department pride themselves on mental health or de-escalation two skills that almost every department fails miserably in thanks for
