You know what I'm saying? Get comfortable cuz uh this is going to be one of them ones, man. But anyway, let's get into some of these comments. Let's see what they actually talking about. I know you watch everything. Okay, but yeah, let me relax. Let me relax and you know, but um yeah, so and then um Diane is here. She said, "Good evening." All right. All right. And then y'all just Diane said, "I'm within my five minute window." [laughter] We I think I went a little over, but it's all right. It's okay. Anyway, um, let me see here. Let's see. Uh, oh, Jordan's here. Hayes is here. Yo, yo. What's going on? What's going on, y'all? All right, so yeah. Anyway, we got a video from We have a video from Detective Williams. Okay, Detective Williams. And the title of the video is neighborhood watches their mailman get brutally murdered. All right. Hey, hope y'all got y'all snacks, got y'all drinks. Let's go. Let's get into it, man. Let's get into it. This mail truck belongs to 33-year-old Jason Schaefer. And he was just [music] executed in broad daylight while delivering the neighborhood's mail. As he stood at these community boxes, he had no idea his entire route was being tracked by someone hiding in plain sight. >> I saw a man in a hoodie, dark clothing, jogging on that path, [music] and then I saw him cut over to the road. What looked like a random act of violence would soon reveal a cold, calculated ambush and a web of betrayal involving the very people he once called family. >> Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on. Cold. >> We got a girl here running. >> Calculated ambush and a web of betrayal involving the very people. And that look like a girl. Hold on. We might have to make this bigger. Yeah, that look like a girl. Here we go. Probably some relationship stuff. Here we go, man. Here we go. What's up, Nicole? What's happening? people he once called family. October [music] 13th, 2021, Longmont, Colorado. At 12:30 p.m., 911 dispatchers [music] received a call from the Somerset Meadows neighborhood reporting that their mailman, 33-year-old [music] Jason Schaefer, had been shot. The people nearby were too shaken to start CPR, and Jason was losing blood fast. The closest patrol cars rushed over, hoping they could reach him before it [music] was too late. >> We're at [music] the corner of Heather Hill and Renaissance, and I'm out with Wheeler. Jason had been shot four times in the head and back in broad daylight [music] and he was still fighting for his life on the pavement. Officers kept CPR going for several more minutes as they waited for paramedics to arrive. [music] >> And broad daylight is crazy. >> Nobody didn't see where they went. It's >> nowhere. [music] >> Working on it. >> All of them. >> Go. >> I asked you to look out for the shooter and we'll take care of this. >> Thank you. >> You got it. >> For a shooting in broad daylight, [music] you'd think finding the killer would be simple. It wasn't. Even with multiple witnesses hearing the shots and seeing the shooter, they were still gone before police got [music] there. >> Three pound. And then I saw a guy with a [music] with kind of about a sturdy guy with a jacket running that direction. >> Just start, let's start working south for a perimeter south and then we'll get him set up east. Which way did you see him running? >> I saw him. He across stairs and then run long run. >> Hey Josh, hold real quick. He went south from here. Can you just start mobile right now? >> Street. There's the header here. Circle. Mhm. >> He cut run in that direction. Just cut into it. >> I found something. I didn't find anybody. >> No, I asked somebody to just see if I find somebody. >> Hey, Pierce. Last information. He was running southbound and then headed south west from Heather Hill Circle diagonally through the houses. My witnesses say now he went southeast. Southeast from Heather Hill Circle. >> These men were one of the few who were able to get a look at the shooter. And at the time, description was the only lead the officers had to find him. >> He wear nothing. He He didn't wear any hat. He just just the hair kind of >> Could you tell uh was he white, black, Hispanic? >> Uh looks like I'm sorry. White. >> White. Okay. And a guy you How tall do you think he was? >> Could you tell? >> Similar to yours like my your kind of height. >> Could you remember what kind of clothes he was wearing? >> Uh jacket. >> What color jacket? >> Gray gray gray type of a jacket. It's a jacket if I'm correct cuz I saw him just quickly run. I I didn't know. But after that I saw the the the the post the the post truck over there. >> Okay. So, like pants-wise, what was he wearing pants-wise? [music] >> Pants, uh, just like a pants, like a regular pants, but not a blue jean, not blue color. [music] >> Okay. >> Ducker than blue color. >> White male, dark jacket, dark pants, average build. It was the kind of outfit meant to blend in and reveal nothing. Even with a wide perimeter locked down, the shooter was nowhere to be found. Jason worked this route all the time. And when he was shot, he was in the middle of delivering mail to the community boxes with everything unlocked and accessible. [music] At first, officers had to consider that the real target might have been the male and Jason had simply gotten in the way. [music] But that theory fell apart fast. >> See, and that wouldn't be a bad theory. That wouldn't be a bad theory if it was if somebody was actually going after the mail because there's a lot of mail theft that goes on, you know, and um especially if somebody knows somebody's getting a check through the mail or something like that or like when uh what when it was like co and they was sending out them like refund checks or whatever it was or what man people tried people was all hell was breaking loose man. People was running down on the mailman and everything. They was like, "Oh yeah, give up that mail, man. Give up that packages." You know, like it was it was crazy, you know. It was crazy. So that that could be a good theory, but uh as they say, that's it's not really uh No. Um I see uh Gigi in the building. What's going on, Gigi? >> Not a single piece of mail was missing. Before they could get much further, one of Jason's co-workers, Jessica, [music] arrived at the scene, and she already had someone in mind who might have wanted to hurt him. >> Um, he's been like telling me what's going on with his situation [music] and everything right now. >> At this office for over a year, [music] >> what can you tell me what's going on? >> Um, I mean, right now, this is what worries me. He's got he just on Friday his lawyer just [music] filed papers for they've been going through a big custody battle, but she hasn't been speaking to him at all. So, he filed some more papers so that he could get more time. And I know she probably would have been served today, yesterday or today. Um, she's been coming to the office and kind of like she also works for the post office, but in Loveland. >> Um, she showed up one day and said she was there to help and as soon as he left, she left. Like she didn't even help us or anything. It was weird. And then the other day I caught her and they're going through his stuff at his case. Um, and when I walked over to ask her to leave, she just kind of like left. >> Well, what is her name? >> Her name is Devon. >> Devon and Jason met through the post office in 2015. But after having their son, [music] Chase, the relationship fell apart, and the two ended up working out of different facilities. Things were already messy and the custody battle only made them worse. Devon kept showing up at Jason's workplace and it was getting harder and harder for him to get any space from her. >> I mean, she's like, she's crazy from what I know of her. She's crazy, but I don't know if she's crazy cuz it is her. Yeah, >> but it would have been she would have been served probably today with the holiday. I would think [music] maybe yesterday >> he's he's going for more. So, he's I mean, the kids comes comes over with roses all over and says, "This is a secret. care telling you what happened, stuff like that. [music] And so he said was going to be when her just had >> you know so she used to live in Longmont but she just moved to um she just moved to she won't tell him where she lives. >> That's when Jessica revealed a crucial piece of information. Who else might might know >> what's going on or or anything else? >> Well, the girlfriend, I think. Um the sister of the baby. Oh, >> okay. So, the the lady that um >> that Jason lives with. >> Okay. >> Jason's current girlfriend was Rosa, Devon's sister. Their dynamic was complicated. >> Okay. Okay. I see Rosa now. Okay. All right. And Jason, he's a he's he was a guy with good taste. Okay. All right, Jason. He doing his thing, man. >> Enough. But this took it somewhere else entirely. Still, no matter how complicated Jason's personal life was, police had a killer to find first. That's when a neighbor came forward and [music] told the officers that they saw the whole thing unfold. >> I knew it comes to noonish, so I I had seen the truck out there. Um, I was sitting on my desk. I heard one, two, by the third noise to me, I was like, "What is that?" It sounded like someone banging on something. By the third noise, I came out here and the then the fourth one went off. I saw a man in a hoodie, dark clothing, mediumsized, not huge, not small, medium-sized man jogging on that path. So, I saw him jog on that path and then I saw him cut over to the road and I didn't follow where he went from there. I went downstairs and outside. I called 911. So, the c the n one of the 911 calls was from me. >> Okay. >> And [music] I I went over to the postman who was on the ground bleeding from his mouth. Um, the 911 officer was trying to talk me into doing CPR and I was afraid and I didn't do CPR. I waited till the police woman came and the police woman started CPR. >> Okay. >> She had seen the shooting happen, but even she couldn't give police a clear enough look at the suspect. >> What y'all think about that? What you What you guys think about that? about, you know, someone is in need of help right in front of you and um you can start, you know, life-saving measures, but um you decide not to. And you know what, which is fine, but what would you guys do? Would you guys do the CPR or would you not? I I want to know. I want to know. Y'all just going to let him lay there and literally watch him die? You You already done came out. You You already done came outside and came through, you know. Damn. She just watched him die. That's crazy. >> Trying to talk me into doing CPR and I was afraid and I didn't do CPR. I waited till the police woman came and the police woman started CPR. >> Okay. She had seen the shooting happen, but even she couldn't give police a clear enough look at the suspect. So, officers started going doortodoor asking neighbors to check their CCTV and doorbell cameras. In cases like this, home surveillance can be the difference between a dead end and a breakthrough. But most of the cameras nearby weren't pointed in the right direction. Then, [music] just when it seemed like a bust, one house turned out to have a direct view of [music] everything. So here he is walking up. >> That is true. I agree, Georgia. You said we never have to put ourselves in danger. I agree with that. But you done already came outside. It's not like you was just watching from the window and you know, you stayed inside. You already done came outside and and was there, you know. So I think it's a little different. Um, why so that they could come back and jump off the witness and bump off the witness? Oh, well, you know, Wanda, you know, why so they can come back and bump off the witnesses? I get it. I GET WHAT YOU'RE SAYING. I GET WHAT Y'ALL SAYING. I get it. But you already done ran out, you know. So I think it's just different. You already there. It's not like you're inside and watching out the window, you know, like calling. You already done came outside and you're by his side. So now at this point, you already you already there. So all you got to do is just So I But I see what y'all saying though. Diane says, "I have a uh CPR certification." So yes, I would. You know, LM said, uh, if I ran out, I had already made the decision to help. See, that's what I'm saying. That's what I'm talking about. Well, you already done came outside. So, it's I feel like it's a little different. But, you know, but I I appreciate you guys for, you know, saying your thoughts in the comment section. [snorts] >> He walked behind those houses and you'll hear the [music] gunshots actually. at about 15 seconds. >> And then he runs back [music] that way. Looks it and Chuck, you can see comes out and walks over his car. Must live somewhere in this neighborhood like they were coming in this way. >> But Chuck came out pretty quick. >> Chuck came out within 20 seconds. >> Yeah, he was thinking at 20 minutes, but he came out. >> He came out immediately. >> All right. And then over there, I think he probably didn't see him or didn't see him. >> The footage made one thing obvious. The shooter had been waiting for Jason. The moment he turned toward the mailboxes, the shots fired one after the other. >> Wow. Just as they were going through the footage, officers got the news Jason had died on the way to the hospital. At that point, this was no longer a shooting investigation. It was a murder hunt. As detectives worked through the neighborhood footage, they tracked where the shooter went after fleeing the scene. That was when the case took a turn. The shooter wasn't a man at all. It was Jason's ex, Devon, and she had fled in her own car, a black Nissan Rogue. One of Jason's supervisors was also there, and she explained how Devon may have known exactly where to find him. [music] One of my clerks came to me and told me that she was in the building looking in his case, looking around his case. That's when I had all the >> at work. >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Um and this was probably this around 15th. So is this 15th? >> Uh 13th. >> Okay. So it's the 13th. So this this probably was around 1st the 2nd of October. >> She said around the 1st of October. She was reported looking around. >> She's looking around. So I had all of the poles changed. >> Okay. Um, normally when and I'm going have to give another stand up. Normally when a employee is gone or don't last, we take their number out so they can't use it. But I'm not sure if he shared his code with her >> and and you don't need to get into real big detail, but can you kind of tell me how that works? How does that work with a code? >> Um, the code we assign a code to each carrier. Okay. >> So if something should happen in the building, I'll know who came in there and who we need to. You have to scan with your code in order to get into the building punching. >> But I find each one of my carrier, even my supervisor, everybody got a different code. >> She was given a different code. >> Um, and I took it out. So, how she got in the building, either they left the door open because carriers do do that. >> Or he shared his code with her. And >> had she already been let go at that point? >> She was already gone. >> Okay. When did she get when did she get real problem? She wanted to leave. >> Oh, okay. But we kind of exited along. >> Okay. >> So I think she only really came there because she was looking to Now what do you mean by his case? >> Well, we have a the case where they case the mail at. So it's his carry case. Well, everything is at I don't know if she was looking for keys and and again, I don't want to say it's her >> if he told her to come get something because, you know, a lot of the wives and girlfriends will come, they'll leave things and then they'll come pick it up, >> but no one has ever physically came in the building, come to the front >> and then they ask, "Hey, such and such, pick up, I need to pick this up." So, I really can't tell you what. But >> she was just found inside the building. She didn't ask anybody for to come in. So either she found a way to get in or he gave her his code >> for her to get in. Okay. >> Yes. >> Because Devon had worked out of the same office as Jason before. She knew how things worked [music] and how to get information. Investigators believed that gave her the chance to see where Jason would be and set this up so he never saw her coming. What made this even worse was that Jason and Devon's son Chase was in her care that day. So before detectives could bring her in, they had to make sure Chase was safe. But by the time officers got to his daycare, Devon had already started asking questions. >> Phone asking questions. We're not here. >> She in company with the kid. >> Gateway Monasur School. This is Ren. Can I help you? >> Hi. >> No, he um Jason has not picked up yet. >> Okay. Is Is Rosa still there? Is she still there for the day? >> No. um she she got sick or something. I don't know. She had to leave um in the middle of her shift. She left. >> Okay, we got a um we got a super chat from uh Gigi. She says, "I would try to help and give my all, but I may not be good at helping. I can only hold my own until someone qualified gets there." Yeah. You know that goes back to what we were saying earlier. You know, like I said, you you or like LLM said, she said, "I already ran out, so I have already made up in my mind the decision to help." So, you know, that was that was the whole case cuz you could look out the window and call 911. Like, [laughter] you you you went out there already. So, 911 dispatcher, hey, you know, let's start CPR, yada yada. And you just nah nah I'm good on that. I'mma just wait till somebody else this [ __ ] gas this mother he he about he done you know what I'm saying? He you know about about two more minutes and he going to be sent they sending him up through there you know and you just watched him like you but that which is crazy. But um yeah but anyway let's let's let's uh continue what's going on here though. Uh, let's see. That's crazy that she was watching the sun. But that's another thing right in the very beginning, that whole mask photo thing or whatever. I don't know if they she must have obviously she must have done took a photo of herself in in her whatever in her uh murder outfit or whatever you want to call it. But that's the thing. It's like, you know, um I knew it was a girl. I knew it. Once I seen that photo, I said, "Oh, yeah. Nah, this is a girl. This is a girl." And then come to find out, it's the baby mama. You know what I'm saying? It's the baby mama. She mad. He went traded it. You know what I'm saying? He went and got her something else. You know, she was too she was nuts. You know, he couldn't handle it. you know, moved on. Now he got him a nice little Rosa, whatever. You know, and she got mad, you know, and said, "Well, if I can't have you, nobody can't have you." And that's how it go, man. He traded it in. He had the He had the Chrysler 200, he went for the 300. He said, "Okay, hold on." You know, let me let me get right, man. You know, and she she said, "Nah, no, no, no, no. It ain't going down like that, you know. And now unfortunately that's all fun and games but unfortunately for the child he's going to lose both his parents. Sad man. Sad stuff. >> Okay. >> Gateway Monasur School. This is Ren. Can I help you? >> Hi. >> No he Jason has not picked up yet. Okay. Is Is Rosa still there? Is she still there for the day? >> No. Um, she she got sick or something. I don't know. She had to leave um in the middle of her shift. She left. >> She left in the middle of her shift. >> Yeah. >> She didn't say why. >> No. >> No. Is still there? >> You are just batting a thousand. No. Is just left. They are really short on kids this week. So, she left. Okay. Um, okay. Well, I don't I don't know what's happening because people keep calling me and telling me that that something has happened to Jason and if he hasn't that makes me wonder if something did actually happen. So, um, I don't know if I because I I wasn't I wasn't supposed to have him Jason um if I get a hold of is um can I have her? >> Sure. >> Yeah, that would be fine. >> Okay. Okay. Um let me let me see what I can figure out and um I will I'll see if I can get a hold of. >> Okay. >> Um can you if Jason ends up showing up in the next 30 minutes, can you let me know because I need to try to get a hold of him too. I don't know what's happening. Sure, I absolutely will. Yep. >> Okay. Thank you so much because I don't I don't want to cause a problem with him because it's his day. So, I don't want him to start problems just running late, but I know he usually picks him up by 4:30. So, >> yeah, he does usually pick him up a lot earlier. So, it is weird. >> Yeah. Okay. Well, if he give me a call, but um if not, I will see if I can send there to go come grab him before 5:30. >> Okay. All right. I'll be here either way. >> Okay. Thank you. Sure. Bye. >> Thank you. Good job. >> No. >> The officer secured Chase and brought him to the station. And instead of chasing Devon down, detectives let her walk right into them. They played it carefully, making her think she was just coming to pick Chase up from the station. Still trying to play the role of the concerned mother, she ran into the trap without realizing the police was on to her. >> Hi. >> Hi. >> Are you Devon? >> Yes. >> Hi, Deon. I'm Detective Jones. >> Hi. >> Thank you for coming down. We're going to go right over here. >> Where is my son? >> Um I I'm not sure where he is exactly, but we're going to come this way and we'll see if we >> I need my I need my Somebody needs to tell me where he is. >> Okay. Well, and we'll find that out right away. The key. This is just our gonna go right right here. I think they're going to bring him down this way. >> Okay. Well, I I need him I need him to be here now. I saw my father's car outside and I'm not really sure why he's here. >> Your father's car? >> Yeah. >> Who's your dad? >> Um, his name is Raul. >> Raul? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Is he not allowed to see your kiddo? >> He's a registered sex offender, so he better not be around my kid. Okay. >> I'm not sure who's where, but he's safe right now. >> Wait, who was he with? >> Wait, what? What? We'll >> Who is he with? >> He's going to be with an officer right now. So, >> okay. Cuz the previous officer that I spoke to on the phone said that he was with my sister and she doesn't have custody of him either cuz she's not his guardian. >> Okay. >> So, I need to know where my kid is and I need to know what's happening cuz nobody's telling me anything. >> Well, you about to go to jail for murder. Oh. [laughter] Oh yeah. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. You're cooked. >> Fair enough. I'm I don't know what's happening either. Um I just got here as well. I was just told to come [music] walk you in. So I'm sure they're bringing somebody down. We're going to tell you what's going to happen. Do you want to take a seat for a second? You can stay standing if you'd like, but it sounds like somebody's coming here. Just a second. Let me make sure somebody's on their way. >> Devon didn't know it yet, but she wasn't walking out of that station. And to strengthen the case before confronting her, detectives also brought in her sister, Rosa, who was now Jason's girlfriend. To understand the motive, THEY FIRST OKAY. OKAY. OKAY. They got both of them down there. Hold on. We Okay, but they brought Rosa in there, boy. Okay. walking out of that station. And to strengthen the case before confronting her, detectives also brought in her sister, Rosa, who was now Jason's girlfriend. To understand the motive, they first had to unpack how Rosa ended up dating the father of her sister's child. >> Um, so obviously a lot, >> which is crazy. That is crazy. I'm not going to lie. That's crazy. Your sister now dating your your your baby father. That's in now. That's wild. And that's gonna make someone tick. I'm not gonna lie. Even Rosa, she liable to get offed, man. She She's liable to get knocked off cuz that's crazy. That's your blood. That's your sister. Like that's insane, man. That Jason out there. Jason out there doing his thing, boy. But you playing with fire, man. And you got burnt. Can't you can't play with them too close like that, man. [ __ ] People go crazy if you mess with their friends. So now just imagine messing with the sister. Oh boy. Yeah. Yeah. You're cooked. You're cooked >> with this relationship. Um just with with Devon being your sister. Um can you kind of walk me through maybe by starting on how your and Devon's relationship was before you started the relationship? >> She's a aunt and stepmom. hated. >> I [laughter] was trying to think where to start because she hadn't been in our lives for about for 9 years. Really? Tell me about that. She we all lived at our mom's house. >> Mhm. >> And we were all younger. She ended up leaving when she was about 16. >> Okay. >> Anyway, so she lived with her dad and then she got in contact with us at the beginning of or at the end of last year. >> End of 2020. >> End of 2020. Yeah. >> Okay. Anyways, and so then the beginning of this year, I [music] moved in with her here in LMA. We lived together >> for a bit in her house and then we had an apartment together in June and then there was a situation between her and I. She kicked me out. Anyways, and then I lived started with Jason. >> Okay. >> But what what happened between you two? There was something >> and there is zero judgment coming from me just so you know I'm just trying to wrap my head around it all. I know sister. >> Yeah, zero judgment. >> Yeah, especially I don't really consider sister. >> Okay. Anyways, but it was just [clears throat] a situation with one of her men as she calls >> just between him and I. So, um, >> and when you say one of her men, was it one of her boyfriends or >> Yeah, cuz she is two. >> Okay. So, >> um, what was what was his name? >> Joseph. He was one of the ones I told them about. >> Okay. Um, so you had an issue with Joseph? >> Yeah, they they were kind of having an argument and then [clears throat] Yeah. And then there was I went over to his apartment to [music] kind of help him anyways. And then there was And >> you helped Joseph? Yeah, just like talking [music] wise, >> make sure he was okay with what was going on. Anyways, then [music] >> Do you remember what they were arguing over, which sound pretty big? >> They were arguing over her other man. >> And who? So, you said she had two boyfriends. So, she had this guy, Joseph, and then AJ, which is the guy AJ also mentioned. >> Okay. So, they were arguing over that. And then, um, you ended up going over and talking to Joseph. How did your sister respond to that? >> Well, she didn't know that situation [music] cuz of course there was a little bit of history. Anyways, and I ended up [music] telling her and she was very very upset. >> Wait, what? What? I'm confused. I ain't going to lie. My camera fell out so I'm kind of confused. What? Who the hell is Joseph? And who the hell is these people? Y'all gonna have to give me a quick run. Somebody give me a quick rundown. So the So because I really want to rewind it, but I I know y'all already seen it. Somebody give me a quick rundown in the in the c in in the chat. Somebody give me a quick rundown. Who is these other people, man? So she was living with the sister. She got kicked out. She had a falling out. And then all of a sudden, Joseph and AJ come. Who the hell are these people? Where are they come from? Who's them? >> She threatened to [music] kill herself and then she next thing I know she kicked me out of the apartment that I paid like you're not allowed here. I'm like okay. >> And and you're leaving a lot out so I don't want to assume anything. Um did you end up starting a relationship with Joseph? >> No, I no relationship. [music] >> Okay. Um can you tell me what more happened? Basically to sum it up, like I said, I went there cuz [music] he was like, "Hey, I have some of her stuff here. Can you get it? I want it out. I don't want to have an," >> you know, went there anyways cuz he was upset. So, I just, you know, sat down and talked to him. >> Okay. >> And then, >> okay. All right. So the killer she was doing she had two boyfriends and then the dude her mom dad sister's friend. So she All right. So the baby mama she had two boyfriends and then sister [laughter] Donald Duck's cousin Yeah. [laughter] Yo. So, they both playing the field. They both doing their thing. But one thing that I did catch earlier is that Rosa said that the other sister, the one that has the child, wasn't in her life for like nine years. So, they're distant. It's not like they're close. there, you know. So, that would be a little crazy with Rosa now dating her baby daddy or whatever, but they're distant. Seemed like there's a lot of turmoil and and just bad vibes, you know, going on here. But yeah. Okay. So, the baby mama, she was doing her thing. Jason or or Yeah. Jason, he doing his thing, you know. So, the baby father doing his thing, baby mama doing her thing. Okay. All right. >> Very late. It was like midnight. Woke up in his bed. You can imagine what happened. Okay. >> Okay. >> Thank you for sharing it with me, though. Like I said, I'm just trying to wrap it around >> all the different dynamics. >> Rosa had gotten involved with men Devon had been with before, but Jason was the first one that turned into a serious relationship. >> How did your sister respond to you? >> That's [laughter] crazy. with Jason. >> It was the first time, >> but [music] like between him and her, but she didn't really say much, >> you know. >> Nothing to you. >> Nothing. Well, not necessarily to me directly about >> Mhm. >> What were her feelings to it? >> Probably probably angry, but >> was she not angry at all? >> Was she never said anything directly to you about being upset over you living with Jason? No. >> Do you know what she said to Jason about that situation? About you living there? I mean, you said she was angry, which what is she not angry about? Um, I guess how did you know she was angry? Just like the little comments she would make when we were like, for example, when they were when Jason was her >> Uhhuh. >> and she had some things that accidentally left up at our apartment. >> Mhm. and she was just like, "Here, give this to your new girlfriend or something like that." Just that's what I mean. Like just little >> snoopy kind of >> sorry kind of comments. >> Okay. >> On the surface, Devon seemed willing to coexist with them, but underneath that, the tension was building fast. Eventually, it built into murder, but according to Rosa, Jason had already started to fear that something like this could happen. you know, was kind of worried about what Devon was doing because she showed up at his work at the post office. One day, apparently, she was there to get her mail, which is illegal. [music] She posted and >> Emma, what's going on? Welcome to the live, you know. Yeah. I mean, yeah, you almost about halfway in, so you know. Yeah, you going to have to watch it on the re on the on the rewind. You know what I'm saying? But welcome. >> Then his boss saw or somebody in the facility. >> Mhm. >> Saw her going through his stuff at his case and she was like going through his jacket pockets and just looking around. We were going to, you know, try to follow through with that and see what she was doing. You know, of course, we don't know. >> Mhm. but you know things like that and a few times before that she's they've met at the at his work to for him to >> exchange exchange and then she would just walk on in post office and again that is not her place of employment that's not for >> Jason knew Devon well enough to sense she was building towards something but instead of focusing on protecting himself he focused on protecting Chase by trying to get more custody time through the courts But Devon made sure he never got that chance. Back in the interview room, Deon was starting to get impatient and began lashing out at the officers. >> Okay, we we definitely know your son is safe and >> you know he's safe. I don't KNOW HE'S SAFE. NOBODY CALLED ME. >> OKAY, >> I LIVE IN FORT COLLINS. Like I work in Loveland. I live in Fort Collins and nobody called me. I had co-workers I haven't spoken well past co-workers I guess that I haven't spoken to in years telling me that my father my son's father was in an accident. >> Okay. >> And that I need I should check on my kid and like nobody told me anything. >> So detective death will be here in one sec and he's got more answers than I do. >> Where is my son? >> He is at the police department and he is safe with >> So he's not here? >> This is the police department. He is here. >> Okay. Well, why is he not here with me? I need him to be here with me. I haven't seen him and I don't know what's happened. He was >> because you threw your life away. So now let's not pretend like you all of a sudden you care about your your your son cuz if you cared about your son, you would hold it down, man. You wouldn't off the pops and uh you know not and cause yourself to be taken away from your son. [laughter] Insane. >> Was taken from his school without my knowledge or consent. And I don't I don't KNOW WHAT'S HAPPENED TO HIS FATHER, so I need to Where is he? >> Devon knew exactly where Jason had been, but at this stage, she still thought she was selling the concerned mother act. [music] But how well could she act if they brought her face to face with what she'd done? >> I am worried about my son. He's 5 years old, and I don't think any of you have told him anything that's happened. I don't even know what's happened. Let's be right now, so we'll figure out. >> All right. Thank you. Thank you. [laughter] >> This is the last This is the last person she want to see the detective come in all jolly and everything. [laughter] Man, we need another camera angle of her face cuz she probably like what? [laughter] HE COME IN ALL JOLLY AND HAPPY and [ __ ] [laughter] Look at this guy. >> Let's be right. All right. Thank you. Thank you. Mind >> if I shut the door. >> Uh, I mean, I don't really care. I just I want my son. [laughter] >> How about that? >> Um, you're [music] Deon? >> Yes. >> Am I pronouncing that right? >> Yes. >> I'm Steve. You can call me Steve. Um, we got to kind of step back here a little bit. >> Yo, look at her face. This dude came in here all like, "Yo, look at her face, man. Do you mind if I shut the door?" Oh, I don't I don't care. What? What? Look at this >> right now. Okay. All right. Thank you. Thank you. >> If I shut the door, >> uh, I mean, I don't really care. I just I want my son. Where [laughter] is my son? >> I'll tell you. Steve. >> Um, here Deon. >> Yes. >> Am I pronouncing that right? >> Yes. >> I'm Steve. You can call me Steve. >> Look at her. [laughter] >> I'm going to tell you um some bad news. Um, your exboyfriend is it ex-husband? >> Just I just call him my son's dad. >> Son's dead. >> We were never married, but >> he died today. Her reaction was the first red flag. And it only got worse from [music] there. >> What? How? What happened? >> He shot him in the face. >> In the face? >> Where? >> On his postal route. >> He was working today. He doesn't >> He was working and someone came up and shot him. >> When did this happen? It's 12:32 today. >> Nah, that [ __ ] fake. >> It is 6:00. >> With those questions, Devon wasn't grieving. She was fishing, trying to figure out how much police knew and whether she was still in the clear. >> And I got a lot to tell you, a lot to share with you. I want to tell you that your son's safe right now. Um, but I want to uh read your rights just so you know about it. let you know that we're recording this because we have to we have to record everything and uh just so um uh didn't play games with you because I don't have to play games with you. >> Read mean my rights? >> Yeah, just to get it out of the way. >> For what reason? >> Well, it's a you know your your uh your son's dad died today and so please typically look at the butler or the ex or owing a lot of money. So we [music] need to ask him some questions about do our due diligence. I don't think he has a butler. So, we got to rule the butler out. So, at least got to ask you some questions about how he died. Maybe you know some today. >> Perfect. You got a good good excuse. Um shouldn't be a big deal, but I want to ask you about it. I want to exonerate you if possible and then move on to the next suspect. You know, do my job and see uh um you know, work. I mean, I'm sure you're concerned about his death and [music] you want to investigate for it. You don't have to sweep anything under the rug. >> No, of course not. But >> in police investigations, this is like standard one-on-one stuff. You you got to rule out the butler. You got to rule out the ex. You got to rule out the book he owes uh he owes a lot of money to and uh start working it. Um could just be a random shooting, but we got to we have to do our due diligence and figure it out. And uh um our cases are reviewed by the DA's office and they want us to do it right. People have a lot of pressure on us uh making sure that we do the the right thing and so I don't want to do anything because this case is so serious. I don't want to do anything to violate your rights, anything like that. So everyone >> my rights and my son's rights were violated when you took him from school and did not contact me. >> Yeah. So that's what I want to talk to you about. So let me read your rights just SO YOU KNOW. >> [laughter] >> OH MY GOD. YO, Detective Steve. Yo, I like Detective Steve. He's so dismissive of whatever she talking about. She's like uh what what she just [laughter] say? She said, "My rights are my son's rights when you took him from school." Yeah. So, I just want to talk to you about that. Yeah. Yo. [laughter] Oh my goodness. This guy >> took him from school and did not contact me. >> Yeah. So that's what I want to talk to you about. So let me read [music] your rights just so you know. [laughter] Have you ever seen cop shows? >> Yeah. >> They're on every night. These are the same rights. I'm going to read them to you. Although you probably know maybe [music] to >> once it was made clear she was a suspect. The nerves kicked in and what stood out most was that she seemed less upset about Jason being dead than she was about officers picking her son up from daycare. >> She's my sister. >> The child is here. She's being the child is being interviewed. forensic interview. >> He should not be interviewed because I didn't give consent for him to be spoken to. >> He's a witness, so he doesn't need consent. >> Was he there? Was he in the >> But he's going to tell us about the relationship between you and his father. >> But I don't >> You don't understand. >> He's five. >> Well, he might not have anything to say, but >> No, I don't understand how this can all happen without me even knowing that anything happened in the first place. because we don't release children to abusive husbands that kill their wives. >> So, you're saying that I am abusive and I killed his father? >> I'm saying that this is police uh standard practice 101. We don't release children to people we don't know. >> I'm not asking you to release him. I am asking why I was not contacted in any sort of form about MY CHILD'S WHEREABOUTS or that there was even an incident. I don't know about that specifically. I know we wanted to find you and we were trying to track you down. >> You could have found me when you picked him up from school cuz they have my information. I pay for him TO GO TO THAT SCHOOL. THEY HAVE that information. >> Well, I'm going to talk to the officers that did that. Like I said, I wasn't there. Okay. We're kind of going around with circles here. I'd like to exonerate you if you didn't have anything to do with this and get you out of this police department. >> Yes. Because I would like to see my son. I don't think you want to hang out with me [snorts] and I think you want to see your son and I want to uh check off all the boxes, make sure we can miss a Sunday night. >> When trying to rattle the detective didn't work, Devon switched tactics and started trying to make Jason look like the problem. >> I had filed a restraining order against him. Um, we had a altercation and I asked him to leave my house because he wasn't living there anymore and he got a little physical while I was holding my son and he was infant at the time. And so I filed it to get him to back off a little bit. And when I went to make it permanent, they were like, >> he was an infant at the time. The kid is five. So you talking about some [ __ ] that happened what? Five years ago. >> Like you know how hard this is going to be. Like if you make it permanent like it's going to be really hard to do transitions because he has partial custody and all of this stuff. So that's going to be really hard. Like you understand that, right? And so I was a new mom. Like I didn't I couldn't do it by myself. And >> raising kids is tough. >> Yeah. And I I was like, I I don't hopefully that won't happen again. And so I didn't make it permanent. Okay. Well, that's understandable. Everyone has a reason for getting restrained and everyone has their own reason [music] why they don't make it permanent. And I'm not here to judge your actions about why you decided to do what you decided was best for me. So just trying to get a snapshot of your relationship. Just when Devon started to think she had control of the room, the detective took it right back and [music] started laying out the evidence against her. >> We um uh we have a lot of people in this case and we learned the case quite a bit. I don't pretend to know everything that happened, but there are some things that are really kind of concerning me. Um we saw your car in the area of the crime scene. Um, your car was uh any side of the road that is missing a pump front passenger front hubcap. We caught your car on the license plate meter [snorts] um a little while ago with the with your license plate and it has that uh front passenger hubcat missing. Sure enough, in the videos around the crime scene, uh that car is there with that front passenger bumper or hubcat missing. um said you're at work today, but your scanner goes off before the homicide and it turns back on well after the homicide and they track your scanner that's used at work to your boyfriend's house, AJ. Um so that's really kind of concerning >> and we caught the shooting on one of the nest doorbell cameras from across the street. Um so I'm really kind of concerned. I know that you got served just the other day with the child custody word and you're a little upset about that. You told AJ, "Have you told Devon in the past that AJ knows where you live and that he'll shoot you if he needs to?" >> I was told who? >> You told that to Devon and Deon told that Rose. [music] >> Yeah. Well, >> she heard Jason heard that from you and then Jason told Rose that and Rose told us that. This happened about a year ago. That >> that AJ knows where you live, Jason. And AJ will shoot you, Jason. >> I You said that. >> That I said that. I've never said that. >> Why is your car in the crime scene area? Why are you in that area in your car? Why are you turning off your scanner? >> I didn't turn off my scanner. My You did? >> No, I did not. >> Inspectors are here. >> Turn off my scanner. >> You uh Oh, you didn't you didn't go with the scanner. the scanners at your boyfriend's house or somewhere in that area in front of it or in a bush somewhere in that area. Uh it wasn't with you, okay? They have a breadcrumb trail, a GPS on your scanner. And most of the inspectors are here and they said before the homicide, you're not doing anything with the scanner. It's stationary for like 3 hours or more. And uh it should be mobile because you're working, but it's at your boyfriend's house. And why is your car in a crime scene area? I [music] don't >> I've got video of your car. Nice. >> I don't know why it would be on camera that I my car was down there, but I don't >> if I don't scan >> packages >> packages, then obviously I'm I'm not doing that. But I I did stop and Right. I did stop at his house for my lunch break. Sort of. [snorts] Deon, >> she is so cooked. [clears throat] Super duper cooked. She was on 10. I'm telling you, her level raising her voice, yada yada. Like somebody said in there, uh, uh, Georgia said, uh, what happened to her anger? You know, she was on 10 and that [ __ ] just dwindled right on down. She Yeah. Oh, yeah. Detective Steve got her together, boy. Hold on. Why was your car there? Listen, [sighs] how can I say this? Hold on. I got to get my words together. All right. Right. Okay. There's people in this in this life, right, that do crime. There's people in this life that do crime, you know, often and do not get caught. Okay. Right. And this woman right here, she did not think any of this through. None of it. Okay, your husband or whatever uh husband, divorce, h whatever, right? Baby father. Okay, he's the postman. Not only is he the postman, he got himself a good route. That neighborhood look like the type of route that if it's a hot day, you know, whoever you delivering mail to might offer you a drink. YOU KNOW WHAT I'M SAYING? See that neighborhood look? Oh yeah, that's the get money neighborhood. You could look around. You could [snorts] you could smell the money. Okay. You could smell it. So it's not like he working like in the slums in the inner like you know I it's not like that. He working out o over here. So, all of these people, I say that to say this, all of these people are going to have Ring cameras and whatever, uh, different brand security systems, all of that type of stuff. You did not think this through. You, first of all, you did this [ __ ] in broad daylight. Second of all, you went in your car that has distinct markings that that you know they could tell it's your car or whatever, like the bumper missing or whatever the case. They caught the license plate reader. You're cooked. You're cooked. You didn't think about this at all and you did that in that neighborhood. You You didn't You have no shot no shot at being somewhat discreet. Dian, are you going somewhere? Yeah. [laughter] Hey, you know, hold on. I'm going somewhere with this now. Stay with me now. Stay with me. Hold on. I got you. No, but [laughter] Price says her IQ is why all her boyfriends turn to Rosa. Yo, now that's so crazy. I mean, yo, look. It look like we might have a guy in here. A guy in the chat. You know what I'm saying? WE COMPARING THE TWO. WHAT? HOLD UP. [laughter] ROSA. Rosa knocking down her boyfriend's left and Rosa taking all her men. That [ __ ] is crazy. That's insane, man. Rosa taking all her men. That's that's wild, man. That's wild. But yeah, man. She she she did this in the work like okay if you would have did this in the in the inner city where there's maybe some I don't know apartment buildings with cameras that never work you know what I mean cuz [laughter] you know cuz cuz there's other crimes that's going on so none of the cameras work you know so it it will be completely it will be a little bit different you know it'll be a little bit harder but you got you you got the postman but not only you got you you did this to the Postman. You did this to a postman that got to get money route. HE GOT ONE OF THEM GOOD ROUTES. YEAH. LIKE, do you not see the THE HOUSE IS GOING ON OVER HERE? THIS is middle to middle middle to upper class. Middle, you're up. You know, come on, man. These are the type of people that, you know, you got your regular post, man. You going to throw them a couple of dollars. You know, give them a tip. This [ __ ] is crazy. Tracy says life is life is already short. Now she will be she will live life uh live behind bars and that baby. [clears throat] Yeah. Yeah. Know what I'm saying? And then if the grandpa is one of them offenders, [laughter] you know, so you can't go with grandpa. We don't know what he liable to do. You know, it's just this is a this Yeah, this family is messed up, man. You got the dad who's one of them offenders. He one of them guys. Then you got the sister. She taking every man that she get. [laughter] She's like, which is crazy. How you want you want all her sloppy seconds? Like, come on, man. [laughter] All of them. ALL OF LIKE, DAMN. THIS AIN'T THE first time you done did it. She get a boyfriend, they get they have a falling out, she swooping in. Oh yeah, let me get that. I need that. Let me get him. That [ __ ] is crazy, man. That [ __ ] is insane. >> Original alibi was simple. She said she was in Loveland delivering mail around 30 mi away from the murder scene in Longmont, but the scanner she should have been using on her route sat still for 3 hours that afternoon, right in the same window Jason was shot and killed. She then claimed she had been with her boyfriend AJ for lunch, but he was seen at Hooters in Loveland having lunch with his friends, leaving Devon without an alibi. >> I think you're a good person, but something's not right here. I think the cake is out. There's something weird going on here. Everything is pointing to you being involved in this shooting. People don't go around just shooting most of people. >> Hey Diane, that makes sense though. I ain't going to lie. That would make sense. That's auntie/stepmom. You know that would make sense. I'm not going to lie to you. That would actually make some sense. [laughter] Tracy says, "I hope the sister doesn't." She was in Loveland delivering mail around 30 m away from the murder scene in Longmont. But the scanner she should have been using on her route sat still for 3 hours that afternoon, right in the same window Jason was shot and killed. She then claimed she had been with her boyfriend AJ for lunch, but he was seen at Hooters in Loveland having lunch with his friends. >> Leaving Devon without an alibi. >> I think you're a good person, but something's not right here. I think the gig is up. There's something weird going on here. Everything is pointed to you being involved in the shooting. People don't go around just shooting postal people. Um >> I mean I I work for the post office and I have before and I have been >> supposedly you're on video two weeks ago breaking the law on post office. >> I didn't break in. I work for the post office. I'm allowed to go in. >> But who cares about that? That's just a stupid burglary. [snorts] >> Burglary? >> Yeah. Let's talk about the homicide. Why? Why are you What's your involvement in this? Because I think there's a lot more than you're telling us. The video of the shooter looks kind of like you. It's from a distance, but it looks like your height and your build. It doesn't look like AJ's height and build. Doesn't look like Castanada's height and build. Looks like your build with a black hoodie. Now, we're going to search your house. We're going to search your car. We're going to seize your car. Um, we're going to do a gunshot residue test on you for >> Sorry. Go ahead. >> So, we're going to we're not going to leave any stone unturned, but we're going to get to the bottom of this. And this is your out to tell me what type of involvement you have because it's very concerning. Your car being there, you turn your your uh scanner, not not bringing your scanner, [music] the GPS not moving during the homicide, you're getting serious the other day with paper. I got an email about it saying that they were going to file something >> kind of like the 11th they had served essential code notice of change of custody something. >> Well, I just got an email saying that we were going to have to go to court for it. >> Um, [music] so what's going on here? Are you behind this homicide? Is AJ behind the homicide? We got It seems like you're involved. Your car is [music] there. You left your scanner with GPS back at AJ's house. Uh, your ex [music] who you've said [snorts] AJ would kill is now. >> I've never said [music] that. >> Well, I don't care. I wasn't there. I'm not That's what Rosa said, but I don't care. I didn't I didn't [music] hear that. That's what Rosa is saying. It could have just been a >> out of everything that the officer is mentioning or the detective is mentioning, that's what she has to rebuttal. I never said that. Talk about your car being there. Talk about the scanner not being moved for for three hours. Talk about that. You don't have no rebuttal to that. That's all you have a rebuttal to is is hearsay. He say, she say, whatever. Rosa said that you said that your boyfriend is going to off somebody. That's the only rebuttal you got. >> Tough remark. We're going to do a gunshot. It could be her being like, "Hey, >> we're going to do a gunshot residue test on a >> No, we're going to do a gunshot residue test on you to see if you have any, you know, when you fire a gun, all this gunshot [music] powder comes out and it covers you. It covers your face, your hair, your clothes, your hands. Have you [music] been around any guns lately? Have you been shooting anything lately?" >> No. >> So, we do a gunshot residue test. It's going to come back negative. >> It better. I feel like >> I'm just trying to get I'm trying to figure out if you did this or if someone else did this. And my bet is you have someone else involved in this, maybe a friend. And so I'm trying to figure out if you talk to me about this, you know. Um I don't think this is a coincidence that your your uh your ex got shot in the face today. It looked [music] like a hit. Looks like someone pulled up, ran out, shot him, ran back to the car, [music] sped off, fired five times, and died right there. So, I'm going to take this seriously, and I want to exonerate you. They have nothing to do with this. I don't want to arrest you if you didn't do this. Does that [music] make sense? I don't want to arrest anyone that didn't do a crime, but your car is there. Your car is there. You turn your scanner off. Your GPS. Well, you didn't turn it off. We're not going to [music] mince words. You left your scanner at your boyfriend's house. You said you were at work all day. You're not at work. >> I am at work. I'm on my route. I just >> for like [music] 3 hours and you left your scanner there. >> I stopped. I left it in the truck while I went into the house. >> And then your car is in the crime scene. You know, that's a lot for a jury to try to swallow. >> Even with all of that stacked against her, Devon still seemed to think she could talk her way out of it. But lying to a local detective was one thing. Lying to this man was going to be much harder. >> All right. All right. We're gonna get this going here. >> Hey, Devin. I want to introduce you to uh >> I just arrived. I'm a US postal [music] inspector. So, my name is Ken. So, I know you work for the post office and have worked for the post office. >> Mhm. >> So, because this is kind of postal related, you were working today. I wanted to chitchat with you about kind of what happened in your activities today. Okay. I understand you, man. >> So, is this going to be federal? >> Oh, man. They got the postal inspector in here, boy. Oh, man. >> Been kind of done talking with the detective, but I wouldn't mind talking to you as an inspector to find out what's going on and have to say. >> A US postal inspector is a federal law enforcement agent who investigates crimes connected to the postal service. And unlike a regular detective, he knew exactly how postal routes worked, how the scanners worked, and what Devon's story should have looked like if she were telling the truth. >> Did you drive to work? >> Yes. >> Okay. Did you drive with to work with anybody? >> No. >> Okay. So, you drove by yourself? Um, did you call anybody on the way to work? Text anybody? >> Um, I text my man in the morning. kind of sort of not really my name, but um and then I talk to him throughout the day. >> Okay. Is this your boyfriend or your man? >> We're not technically together, but yes. >> Okay. What's his name? >> Um AJ. >> AJ. Okay. Is he a postal employee? >> No. >> Okay. But is this somebody you How long have you AJ? >> Um like I said, we're not together at the moment, but >> Okay. You're just kind of off again on again. Is that what I'm getting? kind of. We really knew each other for like 12 years. >> Okay. So, you were talking to AJ on your way there about whatever. You showed up for work, worked about 2 and 1/2 hours, and then you left on your route. Did you go So, when you went to the post office, did you drive your car? >> Yes. [music] >> Okay. What I understand it's like a Nissan? >> Yes. >> Okay. Is it an SUV? >> Yes. >> Okay. Tell me about your day. So, you started scanning packages, you started your route, and then what happened? [music] Um, my guy [music] AJ, he lives on that route. >> Thought y'all wasn't dating. Now he your guy, my man. Oh man. But y'all wasn't dating. And >> so since one day Wednesday Wednesdays are his day off and things are very complicated with us, I try to see him on his day off. >> Okay. [music] So, you stop by on your route? >> Yes. >> Hang out with him. Did you do that today? >> Yes, I do it every Wednesday. >> Okay. Every Wednesday. That's kind of your normal routine. [music] >> What time did you get over to his place? >> I don't know. I don't know exactly when I got over there. >> Okay. >> I wasn't really looking at the [music] time. I was ahead of what I normally am for that day. Not by like a lot, but you know, like I usually it I'm there around I don't know noon. So I think I was a little bit ahead of schedule. So I was able to stop and I was happy that I would be able to take a little bit more time to [music] take a lunch and spend some time with them. >> Okay. So is that what you actually did today then? >> Yes. [music] >> Okay. You know the AJ that was at Hooters at the time. She claims they were hanging out and having lunch. >> Wait, which one is AJ? >> Cuz this don't look like Jason, man. >> After that, >> um, we argued for a while and was then he got angry and left and I stayed in my truck and I was [music] I was very upset. So, >> I was crying and I was in my truck and waited for a while until I was able to >> to calm down. [music] >> What made you so upset this time as opposed to any other time? >> I was always upset. >> Okay. >> He was not. >> When he left, where did he go? >> I don't know. >> What What car does he drive? >> Um, he drives a big Duramax truck. >> Okay. Like one of those big diesel trucks. one of those like big mountain or big big large ones. >> Yes. >> Okay. Um so he left. [music] How long do you think you guys were together before he left? >> I don't know. I wasn't paying attention. >> Okay. [music] So at some point he left. You were in uh the postal truck and then you decided to leave too. [music] Where where did you go after that? >> Um I just hung out for a little bit and then I [music] continued my route. Okay. So, you got back into your Nissan. Was it was it the post office? Yes. >> And then you drove the Nissan from work to home. >> Yes. >> Is that what you're saying? >> Yes. [clears throat] >> Okay. And then um >> AJ is the one in the black shirt. Oh, got her a big boy. Big boy. Huh? Um, does anybody else drive that vehicle or is that just your car? [music] >> Just when Devon was starting to think these were routine questions, Inspector Kin made them personal. >> How tall are you? [music] >> 55. >> About 5'5. Okay. And what what were you wearing today? >> This. >> Okay. [music] You're wearing that all day. Okay. Um, so you don't have like a carrier uniform or anything since you're a royal carrier? Were you wearing those same shoes all day? >> Okay. How about those same pants? >> Yep. Changed. >> Okay. Same. [music] So, if we pull up surveillance video or whatnot, we'll see you at the post office wearing that. Okay. Um, did you ever put on a hoodie today at all? You do you own any hoodies? >> I own a lot of hoodies. Um, but I didn't wear that today. Um, mainly because I I had um uh like the one that I wear I wore yesterday at work. Um I [music] wore I wore the same thing yesterday at work and uh >> Oh, the same outfit. [music] Okay. >> The questions may have sounded repetitive, but by answering them, Devon had locked herself into a story. She said she had been at work all day, that the only break she took was lunch at AJ's house with AJ there, and that nobody else had access to her car. Now, she had to face what that story really meant. >> So, you do not seem like the type of person to me, and and again, I just met you and I just got on this, but you don't seem like a coldblooded killer that's out, been planning something for years, and that this was your perfect opportunity to me. No, [clears throat and cough] because if she was and she was planning, she wouldn't have did it like this is sloppy work. Sloppy work, man. >> Based on what I've heard and from talking to you, this is something where something just snapped. You know what I'm saying? It wasn't something out here. >> Just hold on. Where you were thinking about doing something like this for a long period of time. You weren't planning. I mean, it happened in the middle of the day. This isn't something that happened late at night. >> This is something that happened in the middle of the day. So, you know what's what almost every house has these days? They have cameras. They have rain cameras, >> right? >> So, we have your car over there. You already told me you're the only person that drives that vehicle. >> I also told you I was at work and nobody seems to believe that there. >> No, we understand that you were at work for part of the time. I believe that. >> I didn't say that either. >> Say [music] what? >> I didn't say part of the time. I said I was at work all of the time. >> Okay. Well, we understand that you work today. Okay. I don't want to get into the into the mix with you, but what I am trying to ask you is this. Your vehicle was over there where this happened at the time that it happened. We have witnesses and we have surveillance footage. >> Right. And as I said to the detective, I don't have an answer for that. >> Okay. You don't have an answer. You have like zero answer. How do you think something like that could happen? >> I don't know. And that is where I ask the lawy or the detective to speak to a lawyer. >> Do you think somebody stole your car? >> Again, I'm going to ask to speak to a lawyer. Okay. >> If we're going to continue with this questioning, I don't have an answer for that. [music] >> Okay. So, let me make sure I'm clear with you. If we don't talk about the car, you're fine to continue to help me with Jason. But you don't want to talk about the car. [music] I don't want to talk about something that you are saying is incriminating me. >> Okay. >> And I did not do this. >> I'm just saying that the vehicle was there >> and I just said I don't have a response for it. I don't have an answer. I don't know how to tell you that was there while I was at work in >> Level. Okay. Well, if you're fine with it, can I show you a picture of the car that was there? Would you be comfortable with me doing that? >> You can show me whatever you like. Like I said, I am asking for a lawyer to speak to for any further questioning. >> Okay. So, you don't want to talk to me anymore to help help us with this at all? >> I have helped. >> Okay. So, I just want to make sure we're clear. You You don't want to talk to me anymore about this? You want to You're seeking an invocation of your right to an attorney, which is fine. I just want to make sure we're absolutely clear because before you weren't. I want to make sure because it seemed like you were helping me >> and we were working on it and I'm trying to figure out like did somebody did somebody take your car or anything like that. So I don't want >> nothing to hide about my day because I was at work. >> Okay. >> So I that's why I said I'm I'm willing to give you the information that you are going to be having anyway when you contact whoever you contact at my job. >> Okay? [music] >> It's all the information you're going to be getting. >> Okay? >> There is nothing being hidden. And there's nothing else. >> Okay. So, if we don't talk about your car, do you want to continue this conversation or are you done with the conversation? >> There really isn't else to say. I've said my day. I've said what I needed to [music] say. I don't see what other questions you would have. >> Well, I'd like to know who do you think would have done this to Jason? >> Yeah, he's gota Yeah, he's got to stop. He's got to stop. Georgia, I seen your I seen your comment, you know, and at first I'm thinking in my head, well, he's just asking, does she want to continue? But then he starts with, well, why don't you tell me like, who may have did like, yeah, he's got to stop. He's got to stop, man. You got to stop. She asked for a lawyer, man. It's It's a wrap. You know what I'm saying? This [ __ ] is over with. I don't know who would have done this to Jason. I I don't know his life anymore. I am no longer a part of it. He made that perfectly clear when he decided to, for a lack of better words, sleep with my sister. >> By this point, Devon couldn't hold it together anymore. Her anger toward Rosa came spilling out, and she tried to push suspicion in her sister's direction instead. And then I found out that she not only slept with my >> I don't know how any of this would be held up in court. I don't know like this this part of it. I don't know how any of this would be added. You know, whatever else she says after this. Um she she asked for a lawyer, man. And y'all y'all keep [laughter] you keep questioning her like you know like well who may have done this to yada yada like >> ex-boyfriend but also with [music] my son's dad >> and I kicked her out and I told her she was no longer allowed to live in my house if she was going to be that kind of person. >> That misdirection went nowhere. Detectives came back in and collected samples from Devon to check for gunshot residue and blood evidence. >> Let's see. Right hand just go like this. It's just basically like adhesive tape. Won't leave any residue. It's not tape, but it's >> almost like a lint roller type. If you can envision something like like a tacky lamp roller. Good. this way. This one here is a face. So, I'm going to do those areas on your face. Okay. Um, if you can pull back your hair a little bit. >> And that was only the start. Detectives searched Devon's vehicle, too, then pulled her phone records, and that's where the case really began closing in on her. Not only did his phone show that she was in Loveland at the time of the shooting, but she'd also been in several calls with AJ leading up to and after the attack. When detectives cross-checked AJ's records, they found something even worse. For much of the morning on October 13th, AJ had been tracking Jason's route. Only minutes before the shooting, he broke away and headed to Hooters. AJ had been feeding her the setup the whole time, tracking Jason until Devon had the perfect moment to strike. As a correctional officer, AJ likely understood how important an alibi would be. [music] What he didn't count on was his own location data giving him away. >> Come on, man. Come on. Why I got to be a CEO, man? Nasty work, y'all. Y man. Y sloppy work, man. Sloppy. Sloppy. Half ass dodo brain. Sloppy work, man. You going to Yes, you need an alibi. But do you not think they going to check your cell phone? We bring our cell phones everywhere. People are glued to it. They're going to track that. Like nasty work, man. These guys is Yeah. You They Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I I don't know who Listen, this is sloppy work, man. Sloppy work. This broad daylight. Y'all doing whatever. Whatever. Yeah. Take your ass to jail, too. Ruin your life, too, man. You getting caught up with this chick, man. This chick, she running around. She running the streets, man. She getting knocked off. You know what I'm saying? The the the sister, she she going after everybody. You you you you went on a crash, dummy mission, man. You fell for this. You fell for this. You ruined your life for this, man. Man, you literally went on a crash dummy mission, man. Crash out, man. You went on a dummy mission, man. And you're the dummy. >> The second he realized Devon wasn't getting out of this, he started putting distance between himself and [music] her. >> Okay. Um, do you remember like if we showed you a picture of her car? Would you remember what it looks like? >> So, this is her car on the license plate reader >> back. That's her car. This is down at the scene, the neighborhood of the shooting. You can see the time, 12:06. >> So, originally, you told us that she was up there at your house with you until 12:15 when you left to go to Hooters. Can you explain that? We're trying to verify Devon's timeline right now. That's the thing. >> Yeah, she was not with me. She was before that. Yeah, this the new guy, man. This the new guy. This is This ain't it, man. It seem like to me It seemed like to me uh Jason, he done went and upgraded and and uh what's her and what's her name? Done went and downgraded. Like, you know what I'm saying? Like, it just this ain't no homo. But this AIN'T IT. I AIN'T GOING TO LIE. HE AIN'T GOT no flavor with him. nothing. No, you know, he Nah, man. Nah, this ain't it, man. This ain't it, man. You just Yeah, you just one of them, you know, probably one of them lazy cos, you know, just sit there, chew, dip all day, don't do nothing, bring in your big lunchbox, you know, just eat all Yeah, just that. That's it. Yeah, we [laughter] I've seen your type before. Okay, this [ __ ] is crazy. She traded [laughter] She traded an Alexis for a station wagon. Yeah. What's up WITH THIS GUY? LIKE, WHO'S THIS? [laughter] Come on, man. And then you went on a crash out. You You went on a crash dummy mission over this chick. Come on, man. Come on, man. This is Nah, this ain't it. This ain't it. this guy. You went on a crash dummy mission for this? Yeah. >> She came over to my house after I was done with it for about [music] 10 minutes for about 10 minutes. What happened when she got there? She stopped, used the bathroom, got some water. >> Did she leave anything? No. [music] >> So, if you want to give us answers, now's the time to give them to us. These investigations move fast. You know that. We get this data fast. you only get a couple opportunities to give us explanations for what's going on. We're trying to find the truth. >> So, her and I were talking in the morning when I dropped her off at my house and I didn't necessarily think too much of it. I thought that we were going to fool around after she got off and [music] because we've done that in the past. After she had gotten to work or on her way to work, she had called me and told me that she had decided that that was what she thought needed to happen. [music] And she had told me that she had thought about doing this before. Um, actually 3 days prior, she told me that she was going to do this and I talked her out of it. So at that night, she was going to do it at his apartment in the middle of the night. I talked her out of it. I had to go over there and do it face to face. Uh but she didn't do it that night. This morning she told me that she was going to do it and she told me that she had already had everything that she needed to make it happen. I tried to talk her out of it and she wanted to work and told me that there was no talking her [music] out of it. So after talking to her and she's mentioned it in the past and I she has talked about his route because she was the one rout. So I went out there I knew his route number. Um, I found him and I continued to stay on the phone with her, try to tell her, try to talk her out a little bit. Um, but I I thought that she was going to be with her a lot earlier than that. I thought that if I would see her, I could stop [music] her. Um, she kept talking to me and never showed up there. I guess she was casing at the time. [music] So, eventually she told me, "You know what? Don't worry about it. Not going to do it. It's fine. You go back to work and she hung up the phone with me. At that point in time, I stopped over at his truck and I told him that he should watch out for her because I think she's planning on doing something. He I don't think he remembered who I was. >> Diane, I'm glad you said it. I'm glad you said it cuz [laughter] I'm glad you said it, Diane, cuz after we was gonna get past this, I was gonna pause it and answer George's question cuz Yeah, you know, she threw it on him crazy. Probably something he ain't never experienced before. Got his mind racing, you know, and got him to go on a crash dummy mission, man. She gave him one of those one. She did one of those tricks that she probably only do once a year, man. He went he went insane. [laughter] >> What? He just looked at his wife and I was like, I said, she's stable right now and I think she's something stupid. And he said, I'm not scared of that. And I said, okay. And I left. At that time, I tr. He claimed he went over to warn Jason, but the only person who could have backed that up was dead. >> I love Deon. You know, I have known her for 13 years. Like, she's she's somebody care about. >> Yeah. [music] But right now, I'm not very happy with it. [music] >> Okay. All right. I don't think it's hard to come to the conclusion that I'm having a hard time coming to terms with your story right now. purchases. >> What purchases did you make that that day? Sure. >> All my firearms catalog all my firearms. Check them all. [music] >> Okay. If that's what you're that's >> I'm trying to figure I you there's no way that you can tell me that you didn't believe that her threat to go down there and kill him was serious. >> I mean, >> I'm just saying by your actions that morning, that tells me you absolutely believed it was a serious threat. That morning is the first time that I thought like that I had the feeling that she might actually do it. >> And I'm not because I have the feeling like yes, hindsight's 2020. I should have I should have [music] done more. But I believe that if I saw her, I could stop her. And [music] if I didn't have to worry about getting involved in those two, I might not mess up her custody about. [music] I tried to convince her to keep a level head. I was not successful. I already told you I took her seriously enough that I stayed on the phone with her and tried to convince her that these these are not good options. These are not these are not good ideas and solutions to her problem. >> Do do you understand where I'm getting the conflicting ideas? >> I told you and I told him the same thing. I I understand. I work I work in a career where I do investigating the stuff that was on here and I get I get what you're seeing and I get why you're thinking what [music] you're thinking. totally understand. That's why I I pretty much already understand where everything's going to go. I know that I didn't do that on purpose and I know that the evidence doesn't necessarily say otherwise, but I also know that I've never I've never [music] been complicit with it and I've never told her that I want her to do it. I've never been okay with it. So, you know, I I said I know what's I know the stuff that's on. >> You just helped her cover it up afterwards by not telling anybody and by lying about it. I I >> think about what you say here. >> I did >> because I already know the answers you gave that man the other day. >> Correct. I did lie to him about the stuff so that I could try to cover up my marriage [music] or my affair to save my marriage. >> And in doing so, you covered up my dad. My intention was not to >> Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. What? Somebody got a marriage going on. Wait, what? know that I've never I've never been complicit with it. I've never told her that I want her to do it and I've never been okay with it. So, you know, I I said I know what's I know the stuff that's on. >> You just helped her cover it up afterwards by not telling anybody and by lying about it. >> I I >> think about what you say here. >> I did >> because I already know the answers you gave that man the other day. >> Correct. I did lie to him about the stuff so that I could try to cover up my marriage or my [music] affair to save my marriage. And in doing so, you covered up. >> But my intention was not to try to [music] alter cover up. >> But that's what you did. That's exactly what your lies did. Do you understand that? >> I understand what you're saying. That's my answer. >> You have any more questions? And so he he got a he got a he got a wife and he cheating on his wife with her. Is that what's going on here? Am I getting this correct? You know, hey, regular co [ __ ] You know what I'm saying? It's just one of them fields, man. It's just I'm telling you, law enforcement, you know. Hey, hey, it's the feels, man. It is what it is. There's a there's there's a stigma on it, man. There's a stigma. I'm sorry. The stigma, it is what it is. We all got to face it is you got the you got the medical field, law enforcement, uh bank tellers, teachers. These are the These are like the four. That's Oh, military. Oh, well, I'm We consider them law enforcement, too. It's just what it is. All right. You know what I'm saying? No disrespect. No disrespect. You know what I'm saying? I was a part of law FOR NO DISRESPECT, but it is what it is. You know, and y'all know what I'm talking about, man. Those of you guys that work in them fields, y'all know y'all be hearing the chitter chatter. You know how it go down. Don't listen. And you ain't got to fake the funk with me. You ain't got to fake the funk with me. You know, you hear the chitter chatter. If you not involved with it, you may not be involved with it, but you hear the chitter chatter. Okay? Doesn't surprise me, man. This guy got a girl at home and he out there doing what he doing with somebody. Don't Doesn't surprise me, man. Doesn't surprise me one bit. This is This is insane. This is nasty work. >> I don't. Okay. >> All right. You're under arrest. Go ahead and stand up. Place your hands behind your back. >> Is it possible to do that out out in the parking lot? >> No. No. Stand up for me. >> A search of AJ's phone turned up one of the most damaging pieces of evidence in the entire case. A Snapchat photo. Devon had sent it before the murder showing herself in the same outfit the killer would later be seen wearing. Investigators said it was taken in the same bathroom where she had sent AJ plenty of normal selfies before, making it even harder to brush off as meaningless. By then, prosecutors believed the two were already deep into planning the ambush. With AJ tracking Jason's route and Devon preparing to carry it out, by the time the case reached trial, the motive was hard to miss. [music] Devon was jealous, angry, and terrified of Jason and Rosa becoming the new family in Chase's life. [music] And with the custody fight closing in and Jason pushing for more time with his son, she made sure it would never get that [music] far. On March 7th, 2023, Devon Shriner was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole. AJ Richie, the man prosecutors said helped plan the ambush and guide her straight to Jason, [music] was later convicted as well. And on September 27th, 2023, he was sentenced to life without parole. In the end, what started as jealousy, control, and fear of losing her place in her son's life ended with Jason dead, Chase without his father, and both of them spending the [music] rest of their lives in prison. Wow. Damn, that [ __ ] is crazy, man. That [ __ ] is crazy. Yeah. [sighs] Tracy says, "Uh, hey, I'm a veteran and a school teach." See, lol. You know, you know, you know you was a vet. You So, you definitely know. For real. For real. What? They not trying to stay there on base, man. They trying to get them. It be like the first thing with the vets, they going to get them a new car or a military. They going to get them a new car, a kid, and a wife or uh if it's a girl, a husband or whatever. That' be the That' be the first three things, man. That' be the first three things. I remember my cousin went in my cousin went in a a few years ago. And uh he he was in a longterm he was not a long-term relationship, but it was like his first real love, right? And um you know, they've been together since high school and all that stuff. And whatever they broke up, right? And he was heartbroken and stuff. So he used to come over, vent, you know what I'm saying? and I'm the older cousin, you know, giving that pep talk, yada yada. So anyway, he decides that he wants to join the military, you know, which I think is a good decision, you know, if if you really have don't have no direction and you know, you don't want to do school, military is a great option. So So he going to military, right? And I told him before he left, I said, "Yo, whatever you do, at least survive your first contract. At least survive the first contract, man, without kid, wife. Yo, if you gonna get a car, at least wait. Wait a little bit, but you don't need it right now. Whatever. Man, he was in less than a year. It was like a year. Girl, kid on the way.
