Never say, "I don't need a lawyer. I have nothing to hide." So, let's break that down for a minute. Have you ever seen a video where somebody said, "I don't need a lawyer. I don't have anything to hide." I have. I've seen dozens of them, and it's a mistake every time I see it. It makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck when I hear it. I don't need a lawyer. I don't have anything to hide. Should never come out of your mouth when you're talking to a police officer. I hear the keyboard warriors going, "I don't have anything to hide. Why would I not engage in conversation with this police officer and tell him that I don't have anything to hide?" Well, because it's just the worst thing that you can say to a cop. So, the only thing you should ever say to a police officer is, "I don't answer questions without a lawyer, which happens to be the title of a really cool book that you can get on Amazon in the link below." But, I don't have anything to hide. I don't need a lawyer. That's just stupid. Everybody should invoke their right to remain silent early and often. So, here's the thing with people that say something like that. They usually will say something like that when they think they're in control of the situation and they want the cop to believe that they don't have anything to hide, even though they may have something to hide. I also hear people say often, "I don't have a lie to tell you." Uh, well, yeah, you do, cuz you ended up lying to the cops. As soon as you said, "I don't have a lie to tell you." Anybody that says, "I don't have a lie to tell," the next thing they say is usually a lie. What people really do is they underestimate the ability of the police to prosecute them and the resolve of a police officer to prosecute you. You might think you have nothing to hide, but he knows exactly what you have to hide and he wants to arrest you for what you're trying to hide. So, when you come out and you say, "I don't need a lawyer. Uh, I don't have a lie to tell." The officer knows immediately that you have something to hide. But you've also just opened the door for him to talk to you about whatever he wants to. He can ask you any question he wants to now because you've declined your right to a lawyer. Now, why would the founders of this country write in the constitution that you have the right to have counsel present during any questioning? It's because the state intends to prosecute you for things that you have the right under the constitution to have guidance over before you're questioned about them. So, when you say, "I don't have anything to hide and I don't have a lawyer," it's really just comical. It's really comical when people try to represent themselves. I've seen hundreds of situations in court where somebody goes in and they try to represent themselves. It's a train wreck every time. They don't understand the law or they might think they understand the law and they really don't understand the law. That's even better than than somebody that admits they don't know the law. It's when somebody thinks they know the law and they really don't. But always invoke your right to a lawyer early and often. Tell the police officer, "I don't answer questions without a lawyer." That's the only thing that you should ever say. It's the safest thing to say. Even if you don't have anything to hide.
