If a cop calls you from a blocked number, hang up. It's a trap. So, you were recently arrested in Nashville, Tennessee for DUI. You spent several hours in jail and you feel crappy. You get home, you take yourself a good shower, you get yourself a bite to eat, and then you get a phone call. It's the Davidson County Sheriff's Department who says, "You forgot to pay a certain fee when you bonded out and if you don't make this payment, they're going to come back out and re-arrest you." This is a scam. The Sheriff's Department is never going to call you and ask you for money. It may or may not be a blocked number. It looked legitimate and it sounded legitimate. These scammers are so legitimate, they'll even come up with a sergeant's name who's actually on duty or they'll come up with a legitimate case number. Nobody from the Sheriff's Department is allowed to take money from you, especially when they ask you to load an Apple Pay card or a gift card or they send you to a Bitcoin machine down the road. Nobody with the government is ever going to do that. It's a scammer if they're trying to get you to load a gift card. And you'd say to yourself, "Well, I would never fall for that." Lots of people are falling for this. But, people that just recently get bonded out of jail or maybe they've got a loved one who's in jail. Happens the same way. They might call you and tell you that your loved one is in jail and he needs money on his commissary or he needs to pay a fine or a fee so that he can bond out. And they'll tell you, "If you hang up the phone, we can no longer handle it as a civil matter. We're going to have to refer it to the criminal side and then your attorney will handle it in criminal court. But, you will ultimately be arrested and spend 72 hours in jail." It's the 72 hours in jail that triggers most people's fear and their stress and their anxiety and causes them to go down to the corner to one of these Bitcoin machines and load money on a Bitcoin machine. As a former police officer, a former prosecutor, a criminal defense attorney, and a night court judge, I can tell you definitively, a police officer will never legitimately call you and ask you for money, especially when they ask you to load it on a gift card. Hang up on these people. They're not going to refer you to a criminal prosecution. You're not going to go to jail for not paying them money. But it's a scam because it works. They wouldn't do it if it didn't work. So, it's working with some people. You need to know about this scam, and that's why I'm doing a video on it. It's kind of a public service announcement.
