Okay, we're going to start with number one, two, three, four, and five. And then I need a yes or no response. Okay, understand? Okay. Before we ask you any questions, you must understand your rights. Number one, do you understand you have the right to remain remain silent? >> Yes or no? >> Yes. >> Okay. Do you understand that anything you say can and will be used against you in court? >> Yes. >> Okay. Number three. Do you understand that you have the right to talk to a lawyer for advice before we ask you any questions and to have him with you during questioning? Do you understand that? >> Yes, I think I would like to do that. >> Okay, hang on a second. Let me finish this. Okay. Do you understand that if you cannot afford a lawyer want to be appointed before you before any questions if you wish at no cost to you? Do you understand that? >> Yes. >> Okay. Do you understand? If you decide to answer questions now without a lawyer present, you'll still have the right to stop at answering any time. You also have the right to stop at answering any time until you talk to an attorney. Do you understand that? >> Okay. Do me a favor. This is just reading your rights. If you would just initial all the responses, saying you understand. Okay. Would you do that for me? This is not nothing big. It's just saying that I read those to you. >> AJ. >> Yeah. Just put whatever you want. Whatever you sign it with. Just hold print. Just hold on to the pin right here. Now I'm going to read this the bottom up here. Okay. Now before I read this, I want to tell you something. Okay. This is where I get your side of the story where I can talk to you. Okay. Understand? AJ understand that? Okay. Now, let's read right here on the waiver. Okay. I read the statement of my rights and understand what my rights. I am willing to make a statement and answer questions. I understand and know what I am doing. No promises or threats have been made to me and no pressure or coercion of any kind has been used against me. Do you understand that? >> Yes. >> Okay. AJ, will you talk to us? >> No. >> You don't want to talk to us? >> Not right now. >> Okay. Well, this is this is your one and grand opportunity to talk to us so we can know your side of the story. What's going on? >> I'm pretty sure y'all are going to end up getting my side regardless. Correct. >> No, we don't know. We don't know. We don't know what happened. We don't know anything. We can answer questions. When I read you that your statement of rights, okay, you understand what your rights are. You can stop answering at any time. You don't have to answer that question. We just want to ask you some basic questions. So, if you'll talk to us, >> sir, I'm still trying to understand what happened. >> Okay. Well, you can you can tell me what happened, what transpired, and I'm just going to go through some questions and talk to you and and see what's going on and get your side of the story because I do not know what's going on. Okay. All right. If you will talk to us, I need you to sign right here. And again, you can stop answering at any time. Okay? So, if you want to talk to us, sign right here by the X, AJ. And this is where, like I said, I'm getting your side of the story. So, I need you to sign right by the X saying you will talk to us. And I'm just going to ask you some basic questions. And then if you want to fill in the blanks, you can fill in the blanks. If you don't want to talk anymore, you can say, "I don't want to talk anymore." Or, "I don't want to answer that question. Okay. >> Yeah. Now, this is where you sign your name. Sign what? However you want to sign it. Junior. >> Yeah. All right. First off, I want to just appreciate you talking to us and want to get us anything get it off the chest and talk and see what's all going on. So, AJ, tell me today how did what what did you do this morning when you got up or what time did you get up this morning? You don't know? >> Maybe 6:30. >> 6:30 in the morning. >> So, yeah. >> What did you do after you got up outside? [clears throat] She told me that was okay still in the hospital. She told me if I wanted to go see her now a good time since it was just her. >> Okay. >> So, what did you do after you talked to stepmom? >> She had to do something. She had to leave for something. Maybe. What hospital did you go to? >> Uh, who who's Jay? >> Jade. >> Oh, who's Jade? I'm sorry. Who's Jade? slash exgirlfriend. >> Oh, is she in hospital? I don't exactly know. They couldn't quite figure out what's been going on. She seemed like there. Okay. So, what is where does stepmom where did you stay the night? Where does stepmom live? >> Sherwood. >> In Sherwood. So, you left Sherwood and stepmom. You went to the hospital there. >> Yeah. But you got up from your stepmoms and talked to her and then left and went to the hospital. Did you ever see Jay? there for a while >> with J. Whatever his name is, showed up. He wasn't even supposed to be there till like 2:00 or something. showed up early just this piece of [ __ ] and put his hands on her. She I guess is in denial. I guess she take my only seen her for the first time in like three years yesterday and then she was admitted into the hospital. But I I knew of him. I didn't know that she was still with him until earlier today. Got there for a while. I didn't even know what to say to the man. So, I just sat in the corner of the room to do his visiting. After some time, I just I don't know. I was having trouble keeping my composure. I just decided that I was going to go ahead and start saying my goodbyes. I looked over at him and he was just giving me this look and I think he knew like I was her ex or something. I don't know. Should have just left. Should have just left right there. But instead, I decided to open my mouth and say something to him because I couldn't just I don't know. I couldn't just act like I didn't know, you know. >> And I looked at him. I told him to end. I said, I don't remember exactly what I said. I said something like, "I don't know what's true and what's not true, but if I hear you ever put your hands on her again, it won't be good." And he started talking [ __ ] to me and J was telling us, you know, calm down, blah blah blah. Remember what all he said. I remember telling him that we should just stop talking. I was seemed very upset and I was about to punch him. After I said, "You should just stop talking." He started like fidgeting around. I could tell he was about to get up. And I looked him in his face and I said, "You get out that chair. I'll th in the first place. I should have left it in the car. I've been shot before. I take a gun everywhere. If I can carry it, I'm carrying it. And I wasn't intending to use it that day or nothing or today or whatever. He [ __ ] stood up. Anyway, when I told him when I said, "If you stand up, I'll kill you." I showed him that I had a weapon so that he knew I was serious and that he wouldn't get up and that he would stay in his [ __ ] chair. And instead he starts [ __ ] giving up real fast. And I didn't even think I just I mean I knew he was going to get up and try to punch me, you know. The moment he got to his feet and we were standing, I don't know, maybe shorter than from me to you. I had already had my hand on my weapon. As he started to get up, I put my hand on my weapon and by the time he got to his feet and was preparing to swing on me, I know the rest. So when he stood up, did he just stand up in aggressive manner? >> Yeah. He got up real fast, right? >> Right after I told him, "If you get out that chair, I'll kill you." And he proceeded to get up real fast and his fist revolved and I knew he was going to swing on me or something in that moment. [snorts] And I don't know, maybe he thought I was bluffing. Maybe he thought it was a BB gun. I don't know what he could have been thinking. He got up real fast and common sense just kind of went out the window for me. At least I wasn't even thinking anymore in that moment. The moment he got to his feet, I let him have it. So, you shot your weapon at him. Did you hit him? How many times you think you shot? >> I'm not sure. >> Did you have a revolver or did you have Cuz I haven't seen anything. >> I don't even I know it was a lot. That's all I can really tell you about. I don't even know why I kept squeezing, you know. I just was so I said [ __ ] the moment he got to his feet. >> So what happened after you shot him? >> I left. I went to the elevator. I heard him calling over the intercom about active shooter. I want to say it was about when I got in the elevator that I don't know like I I just realized, you know, I was freaking the [ __ ] out. And the only thing I could think of was, "Oh, fuck." You know, here comes a bunch of police officers that are going to gun me down regardless if I surrender or not because, you know, they're looking for an active shooter. You know, I know how how cops are these days when it comes to those types of things. I just started freaking the [ __ ] out to be honest. Losing my mind looking for a [ __ ] exit because I knew I at least to me I I felt like I had to get the [ __ ] out of there or they was just going to come in there and kill me. I left. So you went down the elevator and went out the main door that you came back in or I can't remember what floor I went on the same floor. I don't know. I found a stairwell when I had gotten out of the elevator and I was looking for an exit. Ended up finding a stairwell and that's how I got out the door. >> Where'd you go last? You found your car. I didn't know where else to go. So, I came back here to Little Rock and I just started calling people and telling them that I'm sorry. I just threw my life away. I called a first. She's You started here. Where were you going to come back here? I was going to go home. Then I thought about it. Figured probably shouldn't go there. that probably be the first place they look for me at. Then I got to thinking about the car. It's not my car. It's Haley's car. I knew she needed it. And I don't know. I don't know how the whole process works and whatever. drove over to her brother's apartment. He wasn't there, but her other brother was there and I gave him the keys and I left. And that's was just going to run. I didn't know what to do. Part of me thought about going to the woods. I don't know. Trying to survive out there. I don't know. Eventually, at some point, I just just said, "Fuck it." And decided I might as well just turn myself in. So, where did you go to in your car? I know you said you went to Haley's. >> Did you go to Haley's? I went to her brother's >> brother's house. And where is that at? >> It's an apartment complex behind that zoom. I was at myself. >> So, you parked there and then got out? >> Then I walked to the gas station. >> Then what happened at the gas station? I walked in. I politely asked to use the phone. He said, "What?" And I said, "I need to call 911." He said, "I'll do it for you." I think that's what he said. He proceeded to do it for me. He asked me what I wanted to tell him. Turn myself in. Did you ever go to 7301 Great Street? Did you ever go there before the gas station? >> Yeah. >> What' you do there? And whose house? Whose house is that? That's your house, but that's where you stay sometimes. >> It's partially my house. My mom passed three or four months ago and left it to us. It was my mother's house. >> I'm sorry for your loss anymore. So, what'd you do at what did you do at that house? >> I was really hoping my sister was going to be there. She wasn't. >> Christian. >> Yeah. Justin was there and I briefly talked to him and I told him what happened. Not exactly. I just told him I threw my life away and I'm probably going to prison and I hugged him. I hugged my nephew. I was hoping that he's might have been there because in school I didn't want to stay long cuz I thought they might pull up at any second and I didn't want like I don't know I didn't want anyone to think like they were involved in anything or whatever. So, I just left. And that's that's when I drove over to Josh's apartment. Left the car. >> How did you get the gun inside the hospital? >> Then I Yes. >> How' you get it in? walked right in. >> Where'd you have it on you at? >> I had in your pants in Did you Did you actually go to the >> They don't have any. >> They do. >> I didn't even know they did. >> Most of them do. That's why I asked. >> Well, they do. They weren't making people walk through them or nothing. I walked right into the main entrance. I had been to that hospital before. I already knew that they didn't have any metal detectors and stuff. That's why I that's why I had the gun on me because I knew like no one would know and it wouldn't matter. It's just how I am. So, what floor did you go on? What was where was Jade's floor? You remember? Or what room was she in? You remember? >> She was on the fourth floor. I don't quite remember the number. It's 400 and something for sure. I remember it starting with four maybe 406. >> Who Who all was in the room at time? >> Well, when I got there, it was just Jade. >> Just you and J. And I asked her what time what's his [ __ ] was going to show up cuz I knew he was there yesterday. >> Do you know his name or anything? >> I've been told but I never cared enough to remember the piece of shit's name. Honestly, >> how old do you think? >> Does he? >> Yeah. >> I mean, he looked about my age. Maybe a couple years older, maybe a couple years younger. I'm not sure, honestly. He looked like 80ish. >> And you never met him before? You just know about him? >> I only know what I had heard from people. Him putting his [ __ ] hands on him and choking around and [ __ ] How many times you think that happened? A bunch or quite a few times or >> more than I was told for sure. I was only told of two times. once when he hit her and I was told she told me herself that he choked her before and we were literally talking about the man like before he showed up and I was telling her and I was like guys like that don't [ __ ] change. They don't. Especially now I didn't know [ __ ] a year or less, you know. But she was swearing up and down that he's changed and stuff. I just told her, "You know what, dude? You're grown. You're going to you're going to decide for yourself." And I just told her, "Don't I told her it's going to happen again one day." said one day he's going to get upset and he's going to do it again. >> So, was it just y'all three in there once he was there? >> Yeah. >> You were the only one with a gun? Jake didn't have one. >> As far as I know, I mean, I wasn't sure if he had a gun. I don't think he had a gun. as he was getting up like his fists were baldled and like he was going to try to punch me. So I assume he didn't have a gun and he would have probably went for that first. >> So as far as you know you're the only one that shot >> I know I'm the only one that shot for sure. >> So did Jade say anything after or >> she was just hysterical. >> She was just trying to calm y'all down. say don't get into it or no fighting or anything? >> Pretty much. >> Yeah. >> Did you say anything to her before you left? >> Well, right before the incident happened, I was telling her bye and I was asking her like if she was going to be okay and stuff and that's when I looked over at him and seen him me mugging me. And after you shot, you didn't say anything on the way out. No, I I couldn't even believe that I did that in that moment. You know, it didn't even really like hit me until I I got in that elevator [snorts] and I heard them call talking about active shooter and was talking about locking down the hospital and that's like that's kind of when I was like, "Fuck, what did I do?" You know, and started freaking the [ __ ] out. When you went out the room, did you see anybody in the hallway or do you remember? >> Yeah, I saw an older man. I think I saw a man for sure. I can't remember if he was older, if he was younger. I saw a man. I said something to him. Pretty sure I said something to him. I don't know. I can't remember what I said, but I just remember when I uh walked out the hallway towards the elevator, he was just right there looking me in the face and he looked scared, you know, and that's Did you walk out? Did you walk out? Was it out or did you put it back in? >> Pretty sure I put it back. my waistband like either before I had left that room or like right after. It was one of the two. It's >> I'm trying to remember the best I can. You know, it just >> it's it's a lot to take in. I'm fighting back tears right now. AJ, what kind of gun was it? Taurus. What color was it? >> Black. >> Is it a semi? >> It's a good gun, too. >> Was it a 9 mm or 40? >> Do you own any other guns besides those? >> 38. >> Revolver. >> Any other guns that you know of? I also own a boy Smith and Wesson that I bought off of my sister Lori. Neither of them were used if that's what >> No. No. I was just wondering what you had if you had any more guns. >> I own a 12 gauge that I had bought from my sister's husband's dad a while back. Y'all probably got that by now. I'm sure toss my room. >> Is your room at 7301? >> You said you stayed at your stepmom the night before. >> Where's that at? >> Couple of nights. >> Oh, where's that at? >> Something in Hollywood Avenue or Hollywood Drive? >> I'm sure. How far away from the hospital is it? >> Four minutes. Close. >> So, you already had the car? >> Yeah. >> Oh, you were already over there with me? >> Yeah. >> So, it's not like you went all the way back over here to get the car drive. >> No, afford to waste that kind of gas. >> So, you mainly stay at your mom's or do you mainly stay at 7301? >> Kind of on and off. at your steps and both >> I would say about evening I would say when I'm working during the week I would typically stay at my mom's house here and on the off days that's typically when I would go see other people especially my stepmom >> how'd you get back to work >> that car You want something to drink or anything? You want a drink of water? >> Yes, please. >> Just be patient. Just stay by real quick. Okay. I'm not going anywhere. >> [snorts] [snorts] [snorts] [snorts] [snorts] [snorts] [snorts] [snorts] [snorts] >> You went down there and get your wire. I was going to give you this. I know you kind of told us everything. Just want to write it down in your own words. [snorts] Okay. You want to get your water down here? Just take it. All right. You want some? You want You want Kleenex or anything? Tissue. You don't think you're going to be able to write >> [snorts] >> Yeah, he he wants some. You think he'll be all right for me? >> I take time. [snorts] I got a baby on the way, man. [laughter] >> [laughter] >> Where's baby mama? >> It's Haley. >> Oh, it's Haley. Which one? Which one? When this baby. >> November. You know what you're having. >> Take your time, AJ. [snorts] >> [snorts] >> Can I have a moment, please? Do you need any phone by yourself? >> [laughter] [laughter] >> Love it. My baby. Oh my baby. [laughter] >> [gasps] [snorts] [snorts] >> Good. You're going to be able to give us write a statement. Yeah, I pretty much told y'all everything. >> Can you take one of these off or something? I'm not trying to do all that right. >> One more time. >> Yeah. Before I end this dance, >> Before I end this interview, AJ, do you want to do [snorts] you want to say anything? You want to add anything? Do you want to say anything else that we haven't asked you that you might want to talk about? Is there anything you want to add? >> I'm not a bad guy. I just Do you want to Is there something that we haven't asked you that you might want to say or is there anything that you want to talk about? >> I don't think so. >> Did Did y'all get everything? Are you good? >> Well, I mean, I just Yeah. I mean, I'm fine. I mean, unless we didn't ask you something and or something that you don't want to say. >> No, I don't know what else to say, man. >> One more time. What? >> Said I threw my [ __ ] life away. End this at 5:47. All right, give us just a minute. Okay, you want to drink some more of that water? Because I have the handcuff you to the back. They're going to transport you. So, keep your chest on that water. You good? All right. You're very professional. Thank you for that. >> Not a problem. Like I said, I'm not judging you, man. Okay. It is what it is. We just move on. Pick up the pieces. Okay. Don't blame everything you hear on TV. You have keys your car. Oh, okay. Oh, good morning.
