Do the cops have to tell you why they pulled you over? I can hear the keyboard warriors going, "What about you, Mr. Rawlings, as a police officer? Did you do that?" I was a really nice police officer. I know that shocks you. I identified myself as soon as I pulled somebody over, I would say, "I'm Officer Rawlings with the Metro Nashville Police Department. The reason I stopped you was blah, blah, blah." Or, I might ask them, "Do you know I stopped you?" That's a good little trick that they'll use to get you talking to them, but you won't do that. But, the officer at the end of the day doesn't have to identify the reason for the stop. It's just courtesy. Tell the person why you stopped them. It de-escalates things. It starts things off on a good foot. It makes you look like a good cop, which is more likely to entice this person to talk to you, and you don't look like a jerk. I was a nice police officer.
