on april 14 2022 at approximately 6 42 p.m four sacramento police officers assigned to the east gang enforcement team driving a fully marked patrol vehicle attempted to stop a vehicle driving recklessly in the area of 44th street and 14th avenue officers activated their emergency lights and sirens in an attempt to stop the vehicle after locating the vehicle the driver briefly pulled over but quickly drove away and led officers on a vehicle pursuit [Music] go ahead pull up to the right stop [Music] the vehicle pursuit lasted for numerous blocks as the driver fled from officers while in the residential neighborhood the driver reached excessive speeds and ran multiple stop signs eventually gaining a considerable distance between his vehicle and the officer's vehicle as the officers attempted to catch up to the suspect vehicle they rounded a corner where the suspect had exited his vehicle and ambushed the pursuing officers firing a handgun at them and striking the patrol vehicle at least five times one officer sustained minor facial injuries during the shooting [Applause] get behind the card officer exited the patrol vehicle and returned fire at the suspect after the exchange of gunfire the suspect fled the area as the officers re-entered their patrol vehicle and attempted to locate him [Applause] [Music] one officer exited the patrol vehicle and returned fire at the suspect after the exchange of gunfire the suspect fled the area as the officers reentered their patrol vehicle and attempted to locate him [Applause] we're stable he's continuing eastbound 23rd continuing eastbound 23rd he's in the car he's in the car okay get back numerous officers from the sacramento police department as well as local outside agencies search for the suspect with assistance from numerous resources including a police helicopter unmanned aerial systems and armored vehicles officers were able to follow the suspect to the city of folsom where the suspect's vehicle was located abandoned as officers continued to search the area the suspect was located near the natoma light rail station in the city of folsom where he was taken into custody during the arrest the suspect was found to be in possession of a handgun and ammunition the suspect 34 year old jose borrego was booked into the sacramento county main jail for charges including attempted murder assault with a firearm possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and evading
