What happens when a cop suddenly turns on his blue lights after following you for a long way? So, let's talk about that for a minute. Let's say this police officer's been behind you for miles. You noticed him back there, but he just kind of followed along and you just continued to drive and you're wondering what he's doing, but now all of a sudden he's turned his blue lights on and you don't think you've done anything wrong. What do you do? Well, it depends on the situation and where you're at and what area of town you might be in, but I don't think it's unreasonable for you to immediately know recognize that he's there. Show that you recognize he's there by turning on your flashers, your hazard lights. So, your flashers are on. As soon as those blue lights come on, I'm putting my hazard lights on every time. Every time I'm ever pulled over by a police officer, I do this. When he turns the blue lights on, I put my hazard lights on so he knows I'm back there. and I pull over as soon as I get to a safe location. He might put his blue lights on behind me when we're on the interstate. I'm not comfortable pulling over on a small median, so I go to the next exit and I pull off on the exit ramp. Is that legal or is that fleeing to elude? I think that's perfectly legal, but it depends on facts and circumstances that I can't answer in this one YouTube video as to whether or not that's legal. I have a client who very recently did this very thing. He got spike stripped and he got arrested for felony evading and fleeing and eluding. But he tells the officers and he told me, "I put my hazard lights on immediately." Which he did. As soon as the police officer puts the lights on behind him, he put his hazard lights on and they immediately spike stripped him. That was a little bit of a different situation because these cops were looking for a stolen car and he happened to just have purchased this stolen car. They knew it was stolen. They knew that this person was gonna sell it to this kid and this kid didn't know it was stolen. So, there's a whole backstory and we ended up representing him. It turned out very well for him. But the cops knew it was stolen and they knew immediately they were going to spike strip it. So, as soon as they turned their blue lights on, they also spiked him and they charged him with felony evading because he didn't pull over immediately. We were able to show that he legitimately knew they were there. He was looking for a safe place and that was legitimate in my opinion. So, when a police officer gets behind you, it's perfectly legal for you to put your flashers on and look for a safe place to pull over. What you don't want to do is speed up to get to this safe place to pull over. Cuz if you speed up, they're going to think you're running and then they're going to call out other uh cars to help them and they're going to put it out as a high-speed pursuit. Just don't speed. If you're going to look for a safe place to pull over, slow your speed down significantly with your hazard lights on and look for a safe place to pull over. Now, you can't drive for 20 minutes looking for a safe place to pull over. You got to pull over at a reasonable amount of time. But what's reasonable? It depends on the situation. I've seen people who literally drove for over 10 minutes to find a well-lit, well occupied area. The cops just followed along behind them with blue lights and sirens. They eventually did charge them with evading arrest and we were able to get that worked out. But it depends on the facts. If you have dash cam footage of a cop following you unlawfully or following you for miles or harassing you, so to speak, comment below. Send me the video. I might do a reaction to
