from Jane, who snitched on her 16-year-old granddaughter after their shoplifting scheme got busted. >> You're you're most likely concealing items right now that were shoplifting. Okay. Are you grandma? >> I had no clue she was stealing alcohol. I don't even know what that [ __ ] is. >> To Emma, who lost control of her bladder after her careful attempt to conceal stolen goods got exposed. >> You're leaking. >> Is that water? >> Yeah. No. >> You just peed your pants. What is that right there? >> Okay, you have a shoe under your shirt. >> Okay, I need to grab this shoe >> that is under your shirt. >> Here are moments when shoplifting granny's realize that they've been caught. >> Starting with Jane, who connived with her teenage granddaughter to shop with invisible money. >> This is how you set an example. I have never had anything like this happen to me and I I'm telling you I don't know how >> you took the chocolates >> and you put them in your back. >> On December the 17th, 2023, officers responded to WCO Foods following a report of an active retail theft in progress. Upon arrival, they proceeded directly to the monitoring room to speak with loss prevention personnel who were preparing to review surveillance footage of an elderly suspect whose actions were both unexpected and troubling. >> Okay. Do you do you have eyes on them still? I I did, but to answer the door, I lost a female. She had a She has a Hoba box on her. >> She has a what? >> A health and beauty product. She [ __ ] >> It's okay. It's okay. >> She has a purse. I can't find her right now. >> So, this is grandma. She has all the product and [ __ ] on her, but she has something grandma's right there. >> Yeah, she has something yellow. And then just to answer you guys, I man at one second. >> Okay, so she >> Where? Oh, she's wearing black. >> Yes. So, she had a box in her hood in either she just picked it up to conceal in her pants right now, but then she has something else in her bag. But there's >> grandma now. >> No. Yeah, they've been concealing together. I don't know why they're separating all of a sudden. >> And there's another female. A smaller female for sure. >> Um, >> so would [clears throat] you you want the items back, obviously. >> Oh, hell yeah. >> Then you want them trespassed. >> Oh, almost death. >> Okay. >> So, I can show you real quick that way. Um, here we go. Where's grandma? >> Cuz they haven't passed points of sale yet. Um, let me Well, what aisle is this right here? >> This is frozen. This is >> All right. I'm Let's go make contact and then uh you can chill here. >> Okay. So, she has she has something in her bag and then again she has a yellow box. I don't know what it is. It's House of Beauty cuz it's just me right now. >> Okay. >> She just has it on her but grandma has a [ __ ] ton of stuff in her purse on top of her >> purse. Okay. All right. Cool. I'll try to bring it back over here. >> With the evidence in hand, the officers [music] proceeded to confront the suspect, later identified as Jane. They were no strangers to the usual cycle of denial that often followed such allegations and expected the standard push back. However, nothing in their experience could have prepared them for what the grandmother had in store for him. Ladies, how you doing today? >> Okay. >> Hey, uh, let's go ahead and bring all this. We're going to go down to the LP office. We're going to go have a little chat. Okay, >> cool. >> We're going to have a chat. Why? >> Yeah. So, right now, um, you're you're most likely concealing items right now that were shoplifted. So, let's just go have a talk down at the LP office so we don't have to make a talk out here. Okay. >> Okay. But I think you're mistaking. >> Okay. Well, if I am, then I am. So, let's go have a talk. >> So, go ahead and just follow me. >> What about all my broken food? >> Uh, if Hey, if it's a mistake, we'll we'll we'll get some new ones. Okay. Go right. Go right. Go right. Ma'am, stop taking items out of the bag. Kind of a dumb move, right? We're going to go straight to customer service. You want to go ahead, Pablo? Just slow it down, ladies. We're going to go just follow this officer. All right. Sorry, I know it's a kind of a tight squeeze in here. Let's close this for a second. Okay. Are you grandma? >> Ma'am, what? What's your name? Just go ahead and put your hand behind your back for a second. Why? >> Ma'am, put your hands behind your back. >> Why? >> Cuz you're being insane for shop. That's why. >> No, I'm not. Yes, you are. No, I'm not right now. >> No, I'm not. >> Relax. >> Look over the purse. >> Relax. Let go of the curse. >> Let go of the curse. If >> you want something, >> stop fighting with us. Do it. >> Do it. >> Do it now. Not so much first. Do it now. >> No. Whatever you want me to do here. Yeah. >> Anything you offered to take. >> Do it. >> That's my bag. You're You're being safe. >> You You're saying some dumb. >> You're saying dumb. >> Listen, you have three officers and you're fighting. You're You're not going >> You're hurting my arm and you're resisting against us. Bring it back. >> Bring it back now and I'm going to throw you on the ground. What an idiot move. >> Go ahead and turn around. >> I have another young one here. I need to know where she's at. >> Well, we'll figure that out after this. >> Yeah, but I need to know where she's at. After this, >> she has to be safe. >> After this, we're going to have two. >> So, I'm going to >> After reading the Miranda rights to her, the officers proceeded with the interrogation. However, they had barely begun when it became clear that they were dealing with a seasoned retail thief who showed no indication of changing her ways. >> You understand these rights? >> Take you guys know. >> How old are you? >> 16. >> Okay. 16. >> How old are you? >> Okay. >> Back to you. >> Yeah. This is how you set an example for this young lady. Have a seat. Have a seat. >> Say please. >> I'm not going to say please to you. You disrespected us by trying to resist arrest. Okay. >> Excuse me. Detainment. [laughter] >> Other one. This is This is >> Oh, they got a young one right Yeah, they have a minor minor. >> Hey, >> are they out with them? >> Can you take a look at them? Just go grab >> She's in the pepper aisle, which is aisle. >> You got to associate with them. Was she involved or is she just a little? >> No, she's just walking around. But I mean, if you want to bring her here just in case black shirt, >> do you all the right? I was just going to like talk and stuff like that, but I figured again if she's dealing with her children or minors or whatever, >> you're going to be problematic anyway. >> Did you get scared of the buzz ball? You want the buzz bomb? >> Who you talking to? >> You didn't want the buzz bomb? >> I said I didn't talk. >> All right. What's your name? What was that? >> Oh, I forgot. She took the booze. My bad. I made a mistake. >> Let me get your bag over here. Okay. What the hell? >> I'm so sorry. >> It's not personal. I just used to >> You don't understand. I didn't >> She took all the >> I did not know that. >> He was right next to you. >> I did not know that though. I was shopping through the store myself trying to get >> I'm not judging you. >> But whoever wrong >> for having that stuff in my purse. >> She just kind of ramped things up for a second. Okay. >> But I'm just trying to get the whole story like alcohol or anything. She was >> I wasn't aware of it. >> She was right behind you when you >> I wasn't aware of it. I didn't see her going in circles. Um just just real quick. >> Is there any way we can separate the drun here with her back into the camera? >> Yeah. >> You can separate. Yeah. Okay. >> Just clearly like speak with her cuz it's >> she's grandma's talking. She's talking. >> Yeah, we're okay. That's >> We have a granddaughter. She She has a disability. is going to really get freaked out. >> You know, officer is with with her right now and she's fine. >> That first chair is fine. >> Okay. >> Just cuz we have so much talking for you question. >> I had no clue. >> Did my partner get your name by chance? >> What will be given to you for free? >> What's your name? >> Question. Do you understand this right? Ma'am, at this point, you don't have a choice. It's >> like we told you, you're detained for the crime of the shoplifting concealment. >> Then you resisted with us and tried to grab a bag. >> So, what is your name? >> You have to legally give it to me at this point >> or I will charge you >> and hinder an investigation. It doesn't add an additional charge to your >> the charges you already have. Yes. >> James. >> James. >> Jane. >> Jane. What's your last name? >> Um, we're going to finish the investigation and depending on if anyone else can pick up, >> especially the little one. You're going to go down to our booking facility and get processed for shoplifting. >> All of us? >> Yes or no? >> Even the little one? >> No. Unless you shoplifting? >> No. We're We're going to have somebody come pick her. Who do you have at home that could >> possibility exist that your kids may be >> probably my number? >> Okay. So, which purse was yours, ma'am? >> Mary Beth. >> The blue one. >> The blue one. And this was all in the blue purse. Correct. >> On you, >> as far as I know. >> How did this get into the your purse? >> I I really don't know. >> To be honest, you made it worse for yourself when you resisted and did not just relax your arms and let us put the handcuffs on. When you grab the purse and you resisted the whole time with this, that made it way worse for you. We were just going to put you in handcuffs, detain you just like this, nice and easy. So, most people, if they're innocent, they're like, "Cool, fine. handcuff me. If we have the wrong person, we release them. Right? Someone who feels guilty, they fight with us. Or someone who's dealt with this in the past, who has never dealt with us in the past. I have never had anything like this happen to me. And I I'm telling you, I don't know how that >> It might have been easier to accept Jane's claim that this was her first shoplifting incident had she not actively struggled with the officers during the encounter. At this point, it would take more than words to cast down on the evidence that was already presented. >> I was going to the store shopping. I'm have a cart full of food to buy. >> Okay. >> And they came up to me and said that we had to come in here because there was a possibility of some shoplifting going on. >> I didn't know. I was walking through the store looking at stuff and everything and some points I walked away from my purse. Look at your cameras. >> I don't know how it got in there. >> Okay. And was your purse in that little seat area the whole time or >> It was in the little seat area. Yes. >> Okay. How long would you say that you lost visual of your purse your whole time? >> I don't know. I'm I was looking at stuff trying to see check prices and and and figure out what I was going to get and probably at some points it might have been for a little while. But Jess was there by my purse so I I don't know. >> Okay. >> Okay. Oh my god. >> I mean, technically, you just dumb and stuff >> except for what she was doing. >> I had no clue she was stealing alcohol. I don't even know what that is. >> Like I said, I don't drink. >> Okay. >> Did you see her at any point except [snorts] in her purse? >> I did not. >> It sounds like when they were trying to detain you, you were saying just do it. Just do it. What were you referring to? >> Just do it. >> The score. >> I don't remember. >> Do it now. Don't do it now. >> Are you saying like, "Do it now. Do it now." >> What were you telling her when we were putting handcuffs on you and we kept telling you, "No, don't do it." >> What will happen most likely is that >> what was I telling her? I don't even remember. >> I really don't. >> Was it in reference to going to the cart? >> No, cuz I was mentioned. >> That's what she said. But I'm like, "No." What are you talking about? Go to the car for what? >> Was it in reference to grabbing the purse from the cart from my hands? >> No. You're honest with me about everything. >> Okay. >> Okay. Do you understand how this isn't really adding up to us when we have video evidence and then you're resisting arrest with us to detain you for shoplifting for concealment? >> Video evidence of what? >> No, that wasn't here. Shoplifting is also considered concealment, not just pass points of sale. >> Do you have video surveillance that I was shoplifting? >> Yes, that's why we got in >> my own purse. >> That's why we got called here. Yes. >> I'm not lying to you. I wouldn't lie to you about that. And have you ever been caught up with General before? Never. >> Across the room, another officer was questioning the 16-year-old, hoping that she would be more forthcoming about the incident and provide a clear account of what had taken place. Unlike her grandmother, >> you took the chocolates >> and you put them in your bag. >> MC L. >> Which bag is yours? >> Tinker Bell. >> The Tinkerbell bag. Okay. Okay. What else did you put in your bag? >> Do you have a middle name? >> The guy in the buzz. >> The buzz ball. >> Okay. >> No, but do you have a middle name or no? >> Jane. >> What is that? Like a alcohol drink? >> Legal first name. >> Yeah. >> Why are you stealing alcohol? You're 16. >> Spell it for me. >> J R M I N R. >> It's okay. Relax. >> [snorts] >> Do you have anything else on you right now? >> After listening to the 16-year-old, it was clear that the incident was a conscious attempt to conceal, unlike what Jane had told the cops. In the end, Jane and her teenage granddaughter were charged with shoplifting, while Jane received additional charges of resisting arrest. Meet 64year-old Carrie, who upped her game by playing the victim after she was caught helping herself to merchandise she never paid for. >> What are you doing stealing? >> I'm not stealing. >> But apparently so. >> Why? >> Well, that's what we're called for. >> No, I brought this stuff in here with me. If if that that little dog food you want, ma'am, you can have it. I got bigger fry. I am get ready to get evicted, ma'am. I trying to get some trying to get this stuff together so I can find a place for that dog in heck cuz I don't even have a place to go. >> On November the 17th, 2023, dispatch responded to a shoplifting event at the Dollar Tree in beautiful Athens, Georgia involving 64year-old Carrie, who was almost fleeing the scene. >> Right here, ma'am. >> How you doing? >> I'm fine. >> Hey, how you doing? >> I'm fine. >> Oh, that's good. >> What are you doing still? I'm not stealing. >> But apparently so. >> Why? >> Well, that's what we're calling for. >> No, I brought this stuff in here with me from my girlfriend's house because I'm getting evicted and I swear to God. >> What they're saying? >> What they saying, sir? >> That you stole? >> I haven't stole anything. Ain't in my purse. >> Don't be going through the purse or anything. >> There she is right there. I asked her why she following me. >> Yeah, they said you stole. >> I ain't stole nothing from her. >> Everything I bought, I buy from from the store. Dollar store. I pay for >> I haven't stole nothing from her. Everything I got here, I brought in there. >> You bought in? >> Yes, ma'am. It's on camera. Everything I got Why are you looking in my bag? >> You got receipts for your stuff? Yeah, some of some of it I picked up at my girlfriend's house. They have flea market. We went to the J&J flea market. I left my stuff for an officer. >> So, ma'am, if you weren't following me, what the police? >> Are you worried about me following you? >> No, because you asked me to look at my bag for the area of US 78 highway and Atlanta Highway. Highway 78 Atlanta Highway. I got my stuff at the counter >> and I didn't have my uh money. I couldn't find my money, my change from the stuff I just bought. >> I did. >> And so I told the girl to hold the stuff. >> You walked out with that. >> This I came in with. So honey, you can go to Well, I ain't going to say nothing to you, man. >> This is all that's my stuff. >> No, this all this stuff is not your stuff. This is my stuff. So, I don't know why she followed me. her store. >> Well, I was in her store. I was purchased some toilet paper and some bleach. That's all I need. You got $2. Why didn't you pay for that? >> I was looking for it, ma'am. And I told her I must have left my check. That's what I was looking. >> You can't take the items out. You can't leave. >> These are my stuff, sir. >> But you got you got to be able to >> You got your receipt? >> Yeah, I got I went to Walgreens and I went to my girlfriend's house. Dude, they don't sell this here. The sir, I bought this. >> I brought all this stuff and my walking stuff in here. I swear to God. >> But you want that stuff, honey? I'm not going to break it. I paid like $40 for that stuff a week ago, ma'am. Carrie, what's your birthday? I bought >> Carrie, what's your birthday? >> I bought literally Carrie, what's your birthday? 59. >> If if that that little dog food you want, ma'am, you can have it. I got bigger fry. I am get ready to get evicted, man. I am don't have time for this, man. I got a dog and a cat that I have to take care. I don't even know where they going to go. >> Where do you live at? >> I can prove it to you. If you think I'm lying, here it is right here. I'm trying to get these dogs and cats a place to live. I am getting evicted. I've already been evicted. They they going to throw my stuff out today. I'm trying to get some trying to get this stuff together so I can find a place for that dog to check cuz I don't even have a place to go. I don't have a place to go. >> At this point, the officers were beginning to consider whether the incident might have been a misunderstanding as she presented her account with apparent sincerity. For a brief moment, there appeared to be little reason to immediately question her version of events. >> Do not have a place. I am for I'm being victed. I throw myself off at >> You want to prosecute? Prosecute for what, ma'am? >> Killing. >> I haven't stole anything. >> All this stuff is there. >> No, it's not. I bought this stuff. >> You have If you have If you just bought this stuff. >> No, I didn't buy this stuff today. >> What? >> So why would you just tote it around? >> Because I picked it up at my girlfriend. >> I went to my girlfriend. >> The cameras. Oh, it's Dollar Tree, not Dollar Tree. >> I'm going to head back over there and I'm start SC. >> Okay. Thank you. >> Be careful crossing the street. >> I have to go. >> You have nothing else on you? >> No, you have to go to those. >> Have to throw everything in the front. What do you want me? >> Oh, you just hang out with me right now. Okay. >> In that moment, it finally began to sink in that she had been caught. But even then, she wasn't finished. She still had one more move up her sleeve. Somehow, she was confident that if she played her cards right, she might avoid the consequences entirely. All right. Uh, it's easier if you go butt in first and scooch. >> All right. Watch your knees so I don't hit it. >> I'll call you back over there. >> Might as well pay me to be an Uber as well. >> Might as well pay me to be an Uber. All right. Cool. >> Is that all your stuff right there? >> Is that your stuff? >> This all my stuff in the car to me? >> No, the um stuff that is at the front door. >> What's at the front door? A >> What are you talking about? >> Talking about stuff. You're not coming out. >> What stuff? >> That grocery cart suitcase all yours? >> No. No, that's not my stuff. >> Okay. Just making sure it's not yours. >> No, that was there when I walked up. >> Okay. Just making sure. >> Okay. >> Sorry. What? >> I have my cat and dog. I have no family up in Athens. They're in my apartment and stuff, ma'am. I got all my stuff. I'm trying to pack. I I beg some homeless people. They at my house to help me move this stuff and give it away to the battleship. >> Mhm. >> And that's what I was in the process of doing, ma'am. And giving your dog away. Ma'am, I'm >> Yeah, but you're still stealing. So, >> Ma'am, I'm asking you to please It's not my decision. It's the stores. >> This is not ours. Yeah. Huh? >> This is not our decision. >> They want to prosecute you. So what? >> Shoplifting. >> But I brought that stuff in here. I can prove it. >> They have cameras proving otherwise. >> No, they don't not. They can see my bags in those carts. Sir, my bags, Walgreens bags and stuff are in the cart. I'm telling you, it is. I put it in there. I found the cart outside right there where them suitcases. >> Okay. Well, you know they have cameras facing the aisles, right? Yeah, I know that. >> Okay. Well, so they caught you putting things in the bag. >> If it's something that you bought from this store, >> it will mark it as already purchase. It doesn't just You can't just bring something back in. >> Did you And you ran the thing to make Okay. Do you uh All right. You want her barred? >> You want to borrow her from the property as well? >> What is it? >> Yes. >> Warn her from barred from the property for two years. >> Yes. >> All right. So if you come back, that's criminal trespass. You'll go straight to jail. >> Yes. >> And that's from the whole property. The whole shopping center. >> Yeah. >> That's from the whole shopping center. Okay. >> Okay. >> When the officers saw Carrie's attempt to talk her way out of the situation, they knew she wasn't sorry. She only wanted out this time. >> You got to get out of the crime, girl. Looking at your your history, you've been convicted of a lot of things. You need to be careful. Three convictions of a theft or like shoplifting, you know, is a felony. >> Yeah. So that's prison time. All right. So you got to chill it with the crime. But there's a lot of resources in Athens, but you got to get out of the crime and stealing cuz you're like you're just putting yourself in a worse situation, right? I'm not saying like life is not fair to you cuz it's not and you deserve better. But you got to find a new outlet to to getting things because stealing >> No, I work for a living. I I work for a living. I get social security from my work. I >> But you stole these items. >> What I'm saying is I didn't have the money. I only got $2 and the lady gave that back to me when I handed her that at McDonald's. I use food stamps to get the stuff. >> You know, you can go to Sparrow's Nest. You get food every day there except for Thursdays? Yeah, I work there. >> You do? >> Uh-huh. >> It's not open every Thursday, but all the other days it's open. So, go to Sparrow's Nest. Stop stealing. Go to Sparrow's Nest. They'll give you snacks, hygiene. They'll give you food. If you get convicted of this, this is your last like one. Okay? That's a misdemeanor. It's after that $1 felony. >> Okay. >> All right. Look at Sparrow Nest. Okay. It's on Prince Avenue >> and they will help you out like big time. They will help you. >> I don't know. What day is it? Friday. They are open right now. >> You think they have You think they'll help me find a hotel? Put me in a hotel after I get this stuff. >> They won't put you in a hotel. >> You have a number to a Bible trip. and donate something like somebody that's getting ready to get out of the Bible because I have not this ain't just the first time I got I've got over >> by my kids. So I know how every year I used to deliver a turkey to the battle shelter in Virginia where I raised my kids. >> Well, look, you're not being arrested. All right, I'm about to come out take you out of handcuffs. Okay. >> But you just got to be careful with the stealing cuz you're on your last. >> Okay. Good. >> Good. You're on your last straw. >> So I can find a place for this dog and cat to go to. >> What kind of dog? >> A miniature do. She's so pretty. >> You want it? >> I have animals at home, unfortunately. >> Well, if you find somebody, can you let me know? >> Yeah. What's your What's your phone number? I have to put you on here anyway. I can give you my I don't got my phone that's on the truster, but I give you my girlfriend now. >> Okay. >> Okay. It's in my purse. She just gave it to me. >> Okay. >> All right. Come on out. >> And she don't want to take it for her little girl. She her little girl mad. >> Yeah. But you know it need the dog need to go to family with you little girl. She take her kids to CVS. She take she take them to that daycare CVS. But I missed her this morning. I was trying to catch her. I got on the 8:30 bus, but I evidently she's not working today. But I'mma have to wait and see. I know what time she picked them kids up cuz, you know, she's a single parent and and that dog, you know, will help her, you know, give her a break. You know what I'm saying? Cuz I got it for my grandbaby. >> She returns to us. >> I only paid $4. Dog is worth 600. >> Dang. out of >> goodness. All right, look at >> come here real quick. All right, so I need your signature right here. So you're not getting arrested, but you are getting a citation for shoplifting because they do want >> to prosecute. Okay, so you do have to go to court on ne on January 3rd at 10:30. So next year, January 3rd, make sure you go, okay? Or you're going to have a warrant. >> Okay. >> All right. Let me give you yours. 28. >> You got you got the stuff. >> I've got the video. >> Okay. >> Is that what you needed? >> Yeah. And I'm just getting her phone number real quick. >> Luck had finally swung in Car's favor, and she was released without further action. Once Carrie was free to go, the investigating officer turned her attention to the store's employee, who immediately provided a detailed and step-by-step account of the incident. >> Okay. All right. back cuz she going to help me get the stuff packed up cuz I got to get a couple more boxes. >> All right, sounds good. >> And I got plenty of garbage. So, I'm put all the clothes in there and donate them to just give me three suitcases, you know, take to the shelters. >> I ain't sleeping in no woods, that's for sure. I'm going in somebody's shelter. I'm probably the battle shelter >> because I am a battle victim person >> and this eviction is about me being battle and a none about it. >> Yeah. All right. Well, you be safe. Okay. Remember, don't come back here. Okay. >> All right. You say a prayer. >> All right. >> Get on and go before >> she changes her her mind. >> Okay. >> All right. Have a good day. >> All right. You too. >> I got the video of her going out. This is her mom. See, she puts this stuff up there and then she just don't move nothing now. And then she just pushes the whole thing. Get stuff out. And then the other video I just changed the view out. And then I approached her at the door. I happened to be right here on the phone, my mother, and I I seen her because I was out. >> I saw her getting everything. I thought she was just, you know, >> last night >> sitting right here birthday bags. I'm like, wait a minute. I kept birthday bag. >> Let me Okay. >> And her bags look pretty empty. Like when she was pushing the cart. H >> her bags looked empty like when she came in. any bags. >> Oh. Oh, >> she didn't come in with anything, but that's her. Now, she's filled with two baby shower bags up. >> Oh, I got you. >> That's when I seen her. I was walking the pet aisle. She was getting on the pet food and stuff, but I was kind of watching them, but I was like, well, you know, better put it out. She's going to pay for it. Then all of a sudden, I was out here on the phone on the sidewalk and um she's coming out the door with all that pet food hanging out baby shower bags. And I'm like, okay, there's no way she paid for that. Why would she have it baby shower? So I just was like, "Did you pay for that?" And she just starts walking me out. I said, "I just want to see your receipt." She's like, "You ain't see nothing." We walk all the way up there down. And then she started, she stopped her talking to me. I was on this side. She said, "What you doing? Follow me." I said, "I know. I was going to the gas station." She said, "Me, too." I said, "Come up with me." She started walking me just talking like normal. She buy me a pack of cigarettes. What you do? Buy me a pack of cigarettes, too. She was like sitting right there with me and I'm like, "Hurry up, hurry up." >> Cuz at first she was kind of kind of, you know, acting like she wanted to, you know, argue and fight, but then >> she want to be friends for me. And I'm like, "Okay." >> Yep. Fortunately for her, she faced no consequences for her action. And yet another case involving a shoplifting granny. Chantel claimed that a grocery store's employee was trying to set her up after she got caught lifting baby clothes that she claimed were for her grandchild. >> It's not mine. She says, "OH MY GOD, THAT'S NOT [screaming] MY HAND." >> On February the 21st, 2024, police received a call from Dillards reporting a shoplifting incident. The caller provided a description of a woman later identified as Chantel, who was seen hurriedly attempting to flee the scene. When officers arrived, they identified the individual in the parking lot. However, before they could even get out of their police cruiser, Chantel ran back into the store, abandoning the stolen merchandise. >> You going in the back? Ma'am, you better stop right there cuz if I got to chase you, you going to have a bad day. I STOP RIGHT THERE. >> TAKE IT. >> HELLO. I can't take nothing. >> Hello. >> Stop dising. Let me just ask you something. I can ask you a question. >> I will dump you on the ground. You do not stop. >> Mr. Ask a question. >> You ask a question. I'm at Too late for that. >> I didn't do nothing. No, ma'am. I didn't take nothing. >> Ma'am. >> Ma'am, just let him do what he got. >> Do not make me use force. >> Take nothing. >> Don't make me use force. >> Okay. Now, put my phone in my pocket. >> Nope. Put your hands behind your back. >> Can I put my phone in my pocket? >> Behind your back. >> I'm going to put my phone in my pocket. I told you I cannot. >> I'm moving. >> You can take nothing to do. >> Stop. >> Stop my phone. >> Ma'am, >> right now you stop. Put your body back. >> You come to the scene over here. >> I'm not doing nothing. >> You're resisting right now. Stop. >> Stop pulling your arms away. >> I'm not the sweater. It's you. >> Echo. Echo alpha. >> Okay. >> All right. Hey, what you call? I'm being honest. >> Why did you run? >> Police. >> Yeah. Why did you You messed up with no person. Nothing in my hand. >> I didn't even say anything. I didn't get out of the car. >> You did. You looked and you stopped at me. You did. >> I said the car look at you. I don't mean nothing. I could have just run by patrol in the parking lot. You're right. But There's nothing outside. >> I see what she kept trying behind. I said, "I don't have nothing." I told her right there. Okay. >> Okay. I get a chance to talk before you lock me up then. >> All right. >> Can I get my phone? >> Oh, you get that later. >> They were at the loss prevention office preparing to begin an investigation into the incident. However, before the officers can make their move, Chantel unexpectedly made hers first. I swear to God that >> Well, not that grandma, not my car. Yeah, cuz it already got me all on the car. Listen, it's her. It's her. I swear to God, that's not mine. She putting that on me. I ain't had that. >> Yeah. So, I can check your car, sir. That's not mine. And I'm not getting That's not mine. my room number three. I did that. >> Okay. >> I swear to God I didn't touch that. >> I hear you. >> I don't even know what you're referring to, but Okay. >> Yes, it is. I saw when she called you. She called the number. I said, "Should you call her you want to call? I don't have nothing." So she said, "That's mine. Be honest." >> Huh? That's not mine. She put that on me, man. On my grandma. That's not mine. That's not mine, man. On my kids. That's not mine. I swear to God. That's not my stuff. All right. Well, do you understand your rights? >> No. >> Okay. Well, guess what? I can't talk to you now. >> Okay. Say what you got to say. >> I already said what I had to say. I read you I read your reading my rights. I said when I'm being locked up I didn't say that you were being arrested or charged with anything. Okay. >> I asked you, do you understand your rights? >> Yes, sir. I do. >> Do you want to talk to me? I don't remember. >> Yes, I do. >> Okay. I'll talk to you in a minute. You ID, please. I ain't got my ID. >> Okay. >> I just said I don't have much. >> Give me one minute. Let me get my notepad out, ma'am. >> Okay. Um, >> can you give me What is your first name? >> I'm getting locked up. >> Can you spell your first name for me? >> I'm getting locked up. Let me ask you that. >> If you spell me your first name for me, >> can you loosen you loose? >> I'll loose for you, ma'am. It's >> actually very loose. So, I'm not going to >> I ain't dropped nothing outside. I didn't take no clothes outside. I told him, man, I picked up. I didn't take no clothes outside. Man, I get my phone. My mama parked down all day. He let me stop to talk to her. >> Oh, right now while you're in custody, he can't give you your phone. >> Okay. I'm saying without being in charge. He said I wouldn't be in charge with anything right now. >> Her parent in here now. >> They're not made for comfort. But the way he put them on, they're still pretty loose. So they are and that's how they fit. >> I think I'm getting charge of that chair. I didn't have that. >> I have no idea what he's doing or what he's talking about. I'm just [clears throat] because he called for us. >> What he was saying? >> He just called for us to come. Can >> I just go get my mama, please? >> Oh, no ma'am. Not yet. Not while you're in our custody. Well, you're in your custody. You have to wait and see what the officer is going to instruct you to do. >> Um, >> I'm saying just be honest with me. I'm being arrested. >> I'm not the primary officer. I don't know what he planned to do. I don't know what's going on, though. >> Um, I'm just here to assist him. I don't know what the business wants to [clears throat] do. I don't know what he's going to do. I'm just here assisting him. That's why I'm at the computer right now typing this in for him while he conducts his investigation. That's all I'm doing. >> How you doing? All right. >> Good. How you doing? >> I'm well, thank you. I could talk to you right quick. >> I did. I did get the stuff, but I never took it. I walked downstairs. >> No, that's not me. They never put that on me. I'm going to get all that stuff. I had a sweater. >> I know this was part of it. >> I didn't have that stuff right there. >> You pay nothing for I can't even talk. >> Um, if I interrupt him, that interrupts his investigation, which is >> It's not fair though. How y'all going to char me with that? I don't have all of that. I put the dresses in the thing. I don't know. I don't want to know. I'm just here assisting him. Like >> up until that moment, she continued to insist that the bag she abandoned outside wasn't hers, claiming that she was being set up by God knows who. But as the investigating officer returned from speaking with the store employee who had filed the report, became clear the situation was closing in on her. In that instant, she found herself caught between a rock and a hard place. Stick to her story and risk arrest or come clean and hope for some leniency. >> All right. Can I get a chance to talk? I got you talk. >> I'm being honest. This Can I talk? >> I've got uh Reyes running it through clear. Uh neither one came up in NCIC GCIC. Neither one of her names that she gave me. >> I could be honest with you. I could talk, please. >> That probably be the best option for you to be honest with me. >> I'm being honest. >> Okay. >> I ain't going to lie. I don't want to lose everything. I did to the club, but I never made it out the door. After I seen her calling your number on the intercom, I'm being honest with my dad mama. So I threw it on the side by the thing. I never made it out. I already knew she was calling you on the inter. She called some type of numbers and I said, "Oh." And I threw it under a little thing. When I walked down, you seen me, I was already scared. I ran back in. I'm being honest. When you seen me, I ain't had no bumpy clothes or no person like that. I swear to God, I didn't. >> I'm being honest to you. And I apologize for running. Can you ban me? I'll never come back. Please. I got a lot to lose. Please give me another chance. Please. I swear to God I won't come back. I won't. I did take it, but I never made out the door with it. I never did. I was coming down the little steps part. I heard her call a cold. I said, "Oh, she call I take my mouth and she call the police." >> And I threw it to the side. >> Don't tell him. >> I'm I'm just I'm talking to him. I'm sorry. >> Nice polo. Baby polos. >> My grandbaby. Mhm. I never made it out the door with it though. So >> being honest, >> please give another chance car. >> You realize how bad that looks. >> Yeah. >> If you're didn't take anything if you didn't made our story by right. >> Yeah, you're right. I seen you. So I ran cuz I figure if I see this, I'm being honest. When I walk that door and I seen you, you had slowed down. You did any eye contact. I said, "Oh, he probably about to tell me to turn back around." I swear to God when I ran. Well, you see me, I didn't have nothing. I know my rights, I left it in the store. I never came out the store with anything. And I didn't have all that. No hats and all that. Being honest. [snorts] >> Okay. All right. Now, >> what's your name? >> Shante. >> Miss Shante, do you um understand how the state of Georgia, the code section for shop listing is when you go into a store and you don't even have to fully leave the store with the merchandise. >> Only thing you have to do is >> Okay, that's me. actively conceal merchandise which we have you on camera doing. >> Yeah, I got I got you on camera. We got you on camera cuz I heard a call a cold and I had to put under a little thing over there. >> No, no, let me finish. We got you on camera making a selection for those three items right there. >> And concealing and concealing them under your left side >> up underneath that that sweater that you got on there. >> I did. >> And then >> and when she I guess it was her. Yeah, I guess it was her. I don't know who it was. Y'all made a poll on the intercom. Right or wrong. be honest. And that's when I threw it under the little thing. I never made it out the store with it, but I was wrong for taking it. >> Why not just pay for it? >> Can I little too late for that now? >> Can I please? >> You had a chance to pay for it. >> Yeah, you right. But I I I ain't walked out of the store with it. I'm being honest. >> You made an attempt. I mean, the state of Georgia, that's all you need is the attempt. >> Excuse me. >> So, with that being said, you're going to be arrested for shot 15. >> Excuse me. I could talk to you >> and you're going to be banned from the store. >> Okay, ma'am. >> Okay, here you go, sir. >> Ma'am. Ma'am, can I >> get that? Let's dism >> All right. Criminal trespass notice. As an agent of dealers, I hereby revoke your invitation to Dillers. You are requested to leave the dealer's premises immediately and you are no longer permitted to enter the premises of any dealers in the United States. The fact that you may receive advertisements or be a dealer's credit card holder does not give you the invitation to come back to Dillards. You are considered a trespasser until you receive a written notice revoking your status as a trespasser. If you believe this trespass notice was given in error or if you wish to request that the trespass notice be revoked, please contact Diller's legal department, 1600 Cantrail Road, Little Rock Arts. >> After the trespass notice was read to her, she suddenly made an unexpected request. Apparently, she still believed that she could argue her way out of the situation. >> Hey, ma'am. >> And what's your name? >> I got a question. I can ask a question. >> And what's your name? >> Excuse me. Can I ask a question? Sure. What's your date of birth? >> Can I just get one more chance, please? >> No, ma'am. >> Can I call Can I call my mom? >> No, ma'am. You can call when you get to the jail. >> When you work here with secret shop? >> No. >> Oh, I can ask a question, but I ain't let it out the door, though. >> You still made the attempt. You passed the point of sale. >> I have I was right there. It's still a register right there. >> You still made the attempt to walk out the store, but I never made out the door after I heard. You made the attempt and like officer Wright said that's all you need in the city. >> But I'm saying I never like heard of that. I never >> I'm saying excuse me. I can't never mind. I can't even talk. I let y'all talk. What? What you got to say? >> But I'm saying >> I'm listen I'mma listen to what you have to say before I go upstairs. Go ahead. >> I'm saying when I had came out >> I did. I dropped it right there. I never had left the store though. I never left the store. >> What did the officer tell you in the state of Georgia? >> How much um how much it came up to? >> Oh, I don't know. >> Yeah, I don't feel I feel like that's my fault. I didn't leave the store. I was not with the merchandise. >> What's not fair is you're trying to items. >> Okay. >> All right. >> Thank you. Thank you. >> All right. It real nasty. >> All right. So, she said, "Listen to what she just said now." She said, "I attempt." She said, "I passed the news." >> You want to get over here. >> You attempted the You attempted to steal merchandise, man. >> Yeah, but I ain't came out the store with it. >> Doesn't matter. In the state of Georgia, all you got to do is have the attempt. All you got to do is conceal merchandise and show real intent. >> Well, as it appears, it's a mystery man. So, you very well may, but I am not the one to make those decisions. >> Can I call Can you call my mama? You got your phone, please. >> Oh, no, ma'am. I can't do that. This is all work. I'm I'm checking on what's pending outside of this building. >> Can I please just give another chance, please? >> No, ma'am. That is not my choice. >> Please. >> No, ma'am. >> Well, you think I lose everything I got? >> I don't know what your situation is, ma'am. I >> Your incident has been updated. So, do y'all got to y'all got me to walk out the door with >> I tell you what I do have. I have you over there in the kids section concealing that merchandise. >> I told you I was I picked up >> and attempting to leave the store. >> Yeah. But when after she turned when she turned the little numbers on the intercom, I straight dropped it. >> Okay. And that right there is intent to shop, which in the state of Georgia, this pen belongs to the store. I take this pin, put it in my pocket. I shop with it. I have not paid for this item. This item does not belong to me legally. It still belongs to the store. All you have to have is concealment. And you have committed the crime of shoplifting. And that's where we're at right now. >> Well, you know what? She could just like ban me. >> That's their choice. And right now, that's not their choice is to just bang. They're going to ban you. That's not happening. But they're also pressing charges. >> And >> Mhm. They're pressing charges. >> I didn't have that over any child though. >> Sir, I didn't have that. >> No, we're not. We're not saying you did. That's >> Oh, before this came in, you did say that. You said you said it's yours and ain't >> it? Miss Brown, have you ever been arrested before? >> It's not popping up. >> No, I'm asking you. >> He says it's low. >> Do you not have any form of identification on you? >> I told you no. If I came in here like this, I thought I'm being honest. No. >> Do you have a Georgia ID at all? >> Yes. Ain't no wish you could just ban me, please. I'm about to lose my job, everything. Any wish you could just ban me? Please, >> you could talk to >> No, ma'am. How old are you? >> 35. Please call my mom, please. >> We will allow you to make a phone call with a moment. Okay. >> I don't understand how me up. I never left the store with it. >> What's your middle name, ma'am? >> I ain't going to lie. After everything had been said and done, Chantel was ultimately charged with concealment with intent to steal. Up next is 80-year-old Joanna, a serial shoplifter who got caught trying to score herself a little five-fingered discount with unpaid merchandise tucked away in her purse. >> In the past, have you been trespassed from this Target before? >> Yes. >> Okay. What were you trespassed for? >> For taking steal anything. We have you in person and on camera opening up this package and collecting two items out of this, the earrings, and putting them into your purse. >> On February the 27th, 2024, an 80-year-old woman walked into a Target store in Florida when instead of shopping like everyone else, she allegedly attempted to get a five-fingered discount while trying to outsmart store security by paying for only some of the items in her cart. What she didn't realize, however, was that the store's loss prevention team had already alerted police. And just as the grandmother attempted to walk out with more than she paid for, officers moved in and intercepted her before she could make it any farther. >> Excuse me, man. >> I didn't know where it was. I told the girl. >> Okay, >> I'll show you. Can I purse, please? Sure. The box. This is it. >> I didn't know what it was. I wanted to be sure and I paid for it here. >> We're going to ask you a few questions. Okay. But before we do, I'm just going to read you your Miranda rightites. So, in the past, have you been >> Yes. >> in here? >> In the past, have you been trespassed from this target before? >> Yes. >> Okay. What were you trespassed for? >> For taking something. >> Okay. >> And what brings you back here? >> I did what I had to do when I like shopping here. >> Okay. Were you explaining the trespass warning? I called and they said it was okay. >> Called who? >> Whoever is responsible a long time ago. >> Okay. When were you trespassed? >> It's been a few years. >> Do you have anything on paper that says your trespass has been lifted? >> No. >> Any kind of documentation to prove that your trespass was lifted? >> No. >> Okay. >> I >> did you steal anything today? >> Say again. >> Did you steal anything today? >> No. Did you open any packages today? Which one? That one. >> Yes. >> Did you open any other packages? >> And that. >> Were the other rings that are in it? >> The earrings that are missing. >> Everybody. >> No. Then I know them. Unless it fell out. >> Did you take anything from these packages? >> No, I just opened that one to be sure of what it was because I wasn't sure and I told her before I paid. Given Joanna's history of retail theft at the store, the officers found it difficult to believe her version of events. Loss prevention personnel already had surveillance footage that appeared to contradict her claims. And at that point, all the officers wanted was for her to come clean and tell the truth. >> Okay. So, we're not going to find the missing earrings in your pockets or >> No, it's not earrings. They're they're stick on things. >> Okay. But we're not going to find those items in your purse. >> Not that I know. >> These are earrings. They are. I know. Now I know. >> Okay. So, we're not going to find the missing ones. >> They're missing. >> So, Joanna, what what we're referencing, we saw on camera and in person, you opened these packages and there was multiple times where these items fell on the floor. Hold on, let me finish >> to where you had to physically bend down to pick them up. Where are those? >> I probably put it back in there. there any >> this package was opened. Did Was this paid for? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> I I gave you the receipt. Here's the receipt. 1999, I think. >> Do you want to go over the receipt with it? Yeah. We got Q-tips and then Carefree pads. I didn't know. >> I didn't [clears throat] know. >> It still has the the white markings on it >> that we know the answers to. We're hoping you can be honest with us here cuz this is not the first time we've dealt with you. >> I know that. >> So then we're not trying to pull your pull any tricks on you. >> I did put it back >> in your purse. >> You put it in your purse, man. >> And then you did not pay for those items and you walked past the final points of sale out to the parking lot. 23rd of 2021, you were issued a trespass warning notifying you that you are no longer welcome onto this property. Okay. Do you remember this? >> Not that I wasn't welcome here. After I I went and >> Did the deputy explain what this is? You were issued a piece of paper. It looked just like this, but it was a pink copy. The deputy explained that you're no longer allowed on this property inside and on the parking lot property. >> I had called. >> Okay. And just like he was saying earlier, do you have any proof as to that you called and you were allowed to come back? >> No, I've been coming here for a couple of years. >> We have no indication saying that you are welcome back onto this property. Okay. So, right now you are currently trespassing according to this trespass. >> I'm sorry. >> I'm not I'm still not welcome here. The trespass warning has has not been lifted. It has no expiration. >> How do how do you do that? Then >> you have to contact >> and you have to get full documentation proving that you are allowed to come back here and that this tres passport has been lifted. >> I have to have it in writing here. >> Yes, ma'am. And you have to have signatures from the target themselves. >> Okay. >> Okay. And also, like he was saying, we have you in person and on camera opening up this package and collecting two items out of this, the earrings, and putting them into your purse. >> They couldn't be in the purse. >> Okay. >> I know. I dropped one on the floor and I put it back. >> These earrings have these little white things that come on the floor >> that secure them in this package. This earring still has the >> This one came out of your purse. >> I don't know. I'm sorry. >> We're just trying to have you be truthful to us. >> I am being truthful. I didn't know. >> I had no idea. >> You have pockets on that jacket? >> No. >> You have pockets in your pants? No. Are >> you wearing any of the ear uh the rings or anything? >> No, these are mine. >> Okay. >> Do you happen to walk past the the >> I see >> which which the aisle she dropped those items to see if there was >> Yeah, I was actually telling dispatch so I hope it's in the notes or the time stamp, but um every the two times I saw her drop them on the floor, she picked them back up. both of the the earrings. >> Okay. So, there's still one earring. >> I can go to those two spots just to make sure. >> Yeah, if you don't mind because we're we're missing one arrest for sure. >> Okay. >> Joanna's behavior caught the officers off guard, especially given her age. From denying any involvement in the theft to appearing genuinely shocked when the stolen jewelry was discovered inside her purse, the encounter had been filled with unexpected reaction. But even those moments were nothing compared to what she was about to do next. [clears throat] >> Please don't do this right now. >> My husband just had >> Yeah, that was on the second of the two instances. I was going with this at that point, too. >> Yeah. Cool. >> I did not take it intentionally in my years old. My husband is 85 and I'm very forgetful. >> Yeah. I apologize for that. I mean, we've had children in here as young as 10 years old. >> I know. >> I don't I don't really discriminate when it comes to chocolate. People come in all shapes and sizes. >> I didn't do anything. >> What do you mean? You pulled it out of your purse. >> I didn't put it in there. It might have fallen in there, but I didn't put it. >> The beauty of America. >> I did drop it. >> Listen. Listen. The beauty of America is that there will be your time in court. That time, >> this is not a courtroom. No. What are you looking for? >> Can you please tell me what you're looking for? The >> driver's license. >> They're getting the statement done right now. >> Believe me, >> they can still have brochure, but I can give them a case number. on the ground. >> No, it was right there in front of me. >> I was holding it half the time and I was I had it in the car for a while. I didn't was not intentional. >> Charlie 223 to >> really I wouldn't do that. It wasn't even an expensive. That's why I didn't put it back >> because I'm allergic to that. >> It doesn't The price isn't rolling. >> What's my 1040? >> Can I do anything? >> No. >> Can you let me come to work here or something? I will. I used to be in sales. I used to be in the medical field now. It's not going to let you come work here. That's not >> But I didn't steal it. Thank you. >> This isn't the good old days where you worked off your You're not a kid. >> No. >> I didn't steal when I was younger. >> You're a grown card. >> Did you pay for that with a card? >> Yes. >> Do you want to return it? >> Do you want to return these items? >> You guys, they're not they're not going to they're not going to take it out to jail. >> Which which card did you use? >> I want to go to jail, please. >> We're not going to go back and forth. Which card did you use to pay for the items? >> The uh the Target card. I believe >> this one. >> Yes. >> Okay. >> Is there a pin number to go along with that? >> Yes. >> Let's go do a return of the register. >> You can take all. Please don't >> see. No, you don't. I watch you zoom through the >> I can use this when I lean on the car. >> Okay. >> Return. >> Return. >> Okay. Is everything at all or not? >> Um, no. I'll go ahead and put the return receipt on that. All right, man. We're going to walk back to this. >> We're going back in the same room. >> At this point, it was becoming clear to Joanna that her attempt to talk her way out of jail had failed, and that if she didn't come up with another escape route fast, nothing would be able to save her from what was about to hit her. Man, this is going back in your wallet. Okay. >> Yes. >> I have that for protection. >> I do. We had a close friend up in New York and in the shopping center that was near our home, >> there was a knife slasher that was slashing women's legs underneath cars >> and I'm not allowed to come back. >> No more. >> That's what you were told in 2021? >> Yes, I'm allowed >> that you're not allowed. That even means the parking lot in front of Target as well. Okay. >> I called and spoke to someone here. >> Okay. But we have no proof to we have no proof to confirm that. >> I didn't know I don't know anything about that. >> I'm going to put handcuffs on you till you sit in this car. Heat. Heat.
