here to place you under arrest. Okay. For theft. All right. >> Yes. Stealing. >> Oh, you're the one that's going to be getting charged with theft. >> Yeah. >> You're the one that took the curse. >> Most people go to work to make a living. But now and then, an employee walks through the door and decides to make history for all the wrong reasons. >> Somebody uttered the phrase that the one guy had a gun. >> You have a gun on you? These dumb employees decided to make history [music] for the wrongest reasons in the entire world. In the quest for fortune, some employees go the extra mile to earn it. And in one such adventure, stealing a purse worth $6,000 strikes a tune that is never pleasant to hear. You give you put the purse in your purse. >> Yeah. >> And then you give it to a man. We're taking you in for theft and I believe your manager here has a few words to say before we leave and then we're out and you're coming with us. Okay. >> Okay. >> On March the 13th, 2025 at around 400 p.m. officers with the Vernon Hills Police Department in Illinois responded to a call from a local restaurant reporting that a 20-year-old employee who had barely spent 2 months on the job had allegedly done the unthinkable. >> Sadly, not my first time of directing this. Um, >> sure. Uh, the best way I found a cop had a great idea of you guys coming into the back dock where the dumpsters are at. >> Yeah. >> I'm going to ask her to come grab some trash bags in the back >> and it's just the back dumpster area. So, it's it's it's basically private and you guys can have whatever conversation we need. >> Yeah, sure. >> After speaking with the manager and watching the CCTV footage frame by frame, the officers realized that this wasn't just another petty theft, but one that had a little spice of history. >> Hello, Alexandra. How you doing? Um, do you know why we're here? Any idea why we might be here >> to talk to you? >> No. >> Okay. So, okay. Um, well, here to place you under arrest. Okay. For theft. All right. >> Yes. Stealing. Okay. So, if you don't mind, turn around. Put your hand behind you back. Okay. >> What do I do? >> Uh, you >> hold it. How old are you? >> Yeah. >> In 202. >> Okay. Okay. So, you stole a purse that was in your guys's Yes. It It was in the lost and found. Okay. >> Um Yeah. >> Yeah. So, that purse? >> Okay. >> Um you took it. >> Do you still have it? >> Yeah. >> Where is it? >> It's in my house. Um I can explain it. Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. Okay. >> Yeah, I can explain it. Okay. >> All right. Let's just make sure. >> Okay. You're going to have to take some of this jewelry. Uh, anything else on you? Just the phone or? >> Yeah, I just >> But I can explain you guys really quick to be honest. >> Okay. Well, >> do you have anything on you that's going to poke me? Any wine keys? Anything like that? No, >> I don't think so. >> No. Okay, I'm going to search you. All right. Stop squirming, please. >> Okay. >> No more moving around. >> Yeah. follow the instructions for right now. Okay. >> Okay. >> But I I have everything on the floor that is that was on the >> Okay. Well, we're going to we're going to get to that in a little bit. Okay. >> I'm going to have to >> I can't give an answer. >> Yeah. The amount of times people have told me that though. Okay. Can you separate your feet for me, please? >> Separate your feet. Thank you. >> Stop moving. >> Yeah. Just >> just look at me. Calm down. Okay. This is not the end of the world. She just needs to do her job. >> Okay. It's harder when you're moving. >> Yeah. >> This is the back of my hand. Okay. Just making sure. >> And that's it. Do you have any locker here or anything like that? >> Locker. >> Like a locker. Personal belongings. >> Any personal belongings here? >> Oh, yeah. But it's only my purse. >> That's important. It's your purse. >> Where would it be at? >> It's on a hostand. a host in. >> Yeah. >> Andy would or actually >> Okay. If you guys don't mind. Okay. >> Is it behind takeout area? >> Yeah. >> The takeout. And what what color purse is it? >> It's black. It's a keeping bag and a lo and jacket. >> Okay. >> The key that she has in that purse like if that vehicle was on the lazy dog place. Okay. And when I like drive to her house, I was also like if I can find her like her her vehicle in there. >> The employee was surprisingly cooperative, which was a little different from what most officers would anticipate. But for someone who was almost making the headlines in one of the dumbest ways imaginable, the cops knew that there was almost always more to the story. >> So now question. >> Yeah. at around I and I've seen this on video. >> Okay. >> You give you put the purse in your purse. >> Yeah. >> And then you give it to a man. >> Yeah. >> That came to the restroom. >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, which part of that is that you took it after work and >> Yeah. He was the person who like drove over there and see if that person has like their >> Okay. to their house because I don't have like the um vehicle license to drive over there. That's why. >> Okay. >> So, let me ask you this. If we check the license plate of the vehicle that the guy showed up in, right? If we check the license plate of the vehicle against our cameras in town, it's going to show that vehicle going to her house. >> Yeah. >> I've been doing this job a long time. You didn't go to the house to drop the purse off >> to be honest. Yeah. I had like the conversations with him like if was like he was going over there and he told me like yeah I went over there and no thing is what's his name? >> As her confession unfolded the officers realized that she hadn't acted alone and that single admission threw a wrench into the entire investigation. >> We're going to we're going to see. Okay. Um for now >> this is still considered theft. Okay. >> Okay. >> So we're taking you in for theft. And I believe your manager here has a few words to say before we leave. And then we're out and you're coming with us. Okay. >> Okay. >> Yeah. So, you know, there was a lot of care about it. >> There was a guest that came forward that said they were missing a purse and then we proceeded with our investigation as far as pulling cameras and it looked pretty clear as day that we had something to do with it or had something to do with it. Uh given that and you reached out to my HR department, everything unfortunately we do have to terminate your employment with us. I apologize, but um it's just it it is what it is. Whenever there's something to do with legality and stuff, we want to make sure that our guest feels like being here. So, >> okay, >> I'll just say this, >> okay? >> Things things go more in your favor as far as charges with the state's attorney when you're honest, >> okay? >> You to if you took the purse for whatever reason, just be honest about it because if we find out that you're lying halfway through this, right? If if you can make me call him because to make sure because I that's what he told me and I believe that he went to that house and everything because if just to make sure because that's what he told me. I'm saying you what he told me because you you see that I was in the vehicle. I was working here. I just like take it to him and he like went to that. I just wanted to confirm that. >> But you're the one that's going to be getting charged with that. >> Yeah. >> You're the one that took. >> Yeah. But it's possible just to make sure because all the things that I told you is what he told me >> to what happened with that purse after I give it to him, you know. >> All right. >> Because I told him like, "Yeah, just check out because that person was in here and it's when I see it like was really expensive." And just like go over there and see if that person is in here too like or the first one was to like see over if the vehicle was in here because it was really weird to be honest too. Then if the way vehicle was in her in her house too like was really weird. >> Well, if they couldn't drive away because the vehicle because of the key, right? If they couldn't drive away with the car, then they would have came back for the purse and the tenant, right? >> How long have you worked here? >> Yeah, that's why. >> How long have you month? Two months. Yeah. >> Have you worked uh hostess stand for any other restaurants? >> Oh, >> yeah. On Olaf Garden about a month. >> Okay. Have you ever tried to find the owner of any other missing purse? >> To be honest, yes, I try to because I feel so bad when that things happened. >> Okay. Well, again, we're going to go to the station. I got to make few phone calls. >> Then I'm going to let you know exactly what are you going to be charged with, whether it's going to be a misdemeanor or a felony for this because >> really because the $6,000 purse. >> It's a $6,000 purse. >> Okay. Well, yeah, that's Yeah, I I have it. >> Right. But >> I have the cards, too. I didn't do anything with them because I don't want to steal with anyone. >> Okay. And again, this again, we're going to get through this and we will, you know, figure out about how you're going to return the items and everything. However, it doesn't excuse the behavior. You understand what I'm saying? You still took something that wasn't yours in this situation. Okay? All right. And it's going to be up to the states attorneys and the judge, right? We we're just here to record some facts and that's that. Okay. So, now let's go. Uh now, let's go to my car and you're allowed to take a to address. >> Is she trespassed at all or like can she come here to eat? What's the direction to tell me that uh we do want to uh ask her to not return to the restaurant uh on a permanent basis? So, >> you understand that you can't come here to eat. >> Okay, you got your check. >> You don't need to come here for your check. >> All right. >> Okay. Do you need anything? >> Okay. Let me >> Here's how we're going to do this. >> Yeah. >> Go ahead. Be careful. There's stuff in the way. >> Okay. I'm going to guide you. >> Okay. >> After investigations were concluded, she was charged with felony retail theft. When emotions get the better of employees, loyalty often takes a back seat. One wrong move was all it took to put this pharmacy employee in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons after she was caught stealing pills from her employers. >> My husband got in an accident out here, got flown. This is all within like a month. I did take it out of the pharmacy and I took one pill out of it. On May the 9th, 2024, at around 12:00 p.m. in Florida, deputies with the Indian River County Sheriff's Office responded to a pharmaceutical store following a report from its manager regarding a female employee who had confessed to stealing medicines. >> So, we have a team member who was a pharmacy technician. She was working in the pharmacy. She admitted to taking one um so it's controlled substance pill. >> We have 13 missing. She did admit to taking it to the the stock room. I know like she admitted to the one pill. That's what I need to report. Um so >> cool. >> You guys decide what you do with that situation. We just need case number. >> Okay. Where's she at? >> She's in the office. >> Do you have video of it or anything? >> So the video Yeah. Which So I have video of her. She goes in and out of the pharmacy a lot. She's got She's all over the place. Um I have the statement of her doing that. The only video I have is her of her going back to the cart like looking for like where she put it cuz she couldn't she's like where's it at? They she freaked out. Um but it was already too late. They had already found it cuz it's on So she took a patient's prescription to the the stock room. Like she took it out of the pharmacy to the stock room. >> She was intending on taking a whole bottle. >> So I think it she's now claiming she only took one pill out of the 2020. >> Cool. After hearing the manager's detailed account, the deputies turned their focus to the employee. With the walls seemingly closing in, she knew that she needed to search for the right words. Just anything that might keep her from spending the night away from her children. [music] >> All right, gent. I'm Deputy Kramer of the Sheriff's Office. Okay. So, I'm going to read you something before we get started. Do you understand each of these rights that I've read to you? >> Yes. >> With these rights in mind, do you wish to speak to me today? >> All I ask is if you are actually going to arrest me, if we can walk outside and you go out there, >> I I can respect that. >> All I ask. >> So, you you're willing to speak to me? >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, obviously, I just read your statement. All right. And from what I've gathered, I guess you're on hard times in today's economy. It's not uncommon. Okay. But >> there's way more. I just only use three pieces of paper. >> That's That's fine, too. But I just kind of want to get an understanding of what happened that day from you. >> She noticed on video. I don't remember that day particularly. I do not. Um, but I seemed off. >> Well, I have I mean, if you really want my own story, I'll tell it to you. Um, I have been living in a garage since September of 2023. Um, I have a mother's house. It's a different kind of situation. My brother, you probably know who he is. He moved down here a long time ago and ended up with like 15 felony charges. He's bad. He lives, but he lives there. >> Okay. >> Um, mental every day. I mean, he's tried fighting my son. He's gotten in his face. He's pushed him. Have I ever called you guys? No. Cuz my mom would lose her. I've come home to cat smeared on my pillows. I mean, like, I have been through so much living there, but have nowhere to go with my kids and I do what I have to do every day and I work two jobs. And um I've been trying to find a house of pitull and I have had a very hard time finding a place to get us out of the situation that I've been in because of Lucy. And I mean, I'm sorry, but Lucy is family. She's my dog and nobody would say yes to us because of her. >> Because of the breed and the insurance liability. >> Yeah. >> So I've been living with this crap for since September. Backing it up. I used to have a house and I I rented it and I had a landlord. He was a slower for 5 months. He refused to pump my septic. I reported him and I was no longer on a lease. I was there for 4 years. I'm used to owning a home from Virginia and I didn't think, oh, I need to renew my lease. So like 6 months later when I should have already renewed it, I called him and I was like, "Baby, and I still want him to stay here." And the biggest mistake that I made is when he said, um, "As long as you pay, you're good." Okay. Well, when I reported him to the city and the state and he has three violations against him for not doing what he's supposed to do, he immediately went to the courthouse and evicted us and within 24 hours he had the house, which put me in my mom's garage. >> Okay. >> Having a sticky finger had brought her into the wrong light. But if she had any chance of coming out of this situation unscathed, she needed to come up with some story, even if it meant lying. >> So, >> I'm getting >> Okay, let's talk about this. >> I needed to explain all that to get to where soon with this. I have been my husband got in an accident out here, got flown. This is all within like a month. He broke every single rib in the back of his spine. I'm working two jobs. I just worked out May 1st almost $10,000 to move into a place like it's the all of what you have to pay is crazy. >> Y >> but this happened before May 1st. It's the amount of things that go on when I was at my mom's and I don't remember what happened the night before. I was telling Renee that that day could have been a potential where we had a place to go and then they find out about the breed of Lucy and it's a no. And that could have been a day that I got another no. Um, it could have been the night before where I'm up because of what's going on at my mom's, which I'm not there anymore, dealing with my brother. He does. He drinks. He's like a what do you call it? A um It's where you can still function and go to work and still do stuff that nobody knows. >> Oh, an alcoholic. >> Oh, he's an alcoholic. He drinks. >> Yeah, but he also does other stuff, too. But he is so functioning, but when he comes home, he's like not nice to my mom. He's not nice to if I'm there, you know? It's it's just so much stuff. And I did take it out of the pharmacy and I took one pill out of it. And then I decided, >> what kind of pill was it? >> Um well, it's generic for it was okay. >> And um I decided to not take the rest of it. And I >> I But I did use the pill? >> What do you mean? >> Like did you take it while you were did you take it and ingest it while you were here or did you ingest it when you got home? >> When I left. >> Okay. >> Yeah. By the time I got home, I was up for like 15 20 minutes and my husband didn't know. And I don't know. And he said he asked me the next day like, "Was you come home and then you were so tired?" And I said, "Well, I am tired, but I didn't even tell him. I told him just now when I called because I told him that I he may have to come out my car. I don't know if I'm being arrested. Like I don't know what's going on. And he said, "Was it the day you came home and you were so tired you went to sleep?" And I said, "Yes." So it knocked me right out. I mean, that's the truth. Like summing it up. >> Her story was quite sympathetic, but the truth was her fate had been sealed the very moment she stole the pill and the moment the deputies walked into her place [music] of work. >> What kind of stuff do you have here? Do you have a car here? M. >> Where's car at? >> Outside. >> My purse's in the trunk cuz I don't bring it inside. Um, my phone, my keys, babe. That's it. >> Okay. Do you care if she leaves your car here? >> Okay. [laughter] >> Well, it is, but he can come get it. I mean, I'm assuming y'all are taking either. He can come get I mean, like, can I call him or just tell him? I mean, I left your phone over there. >> Yeah, you can give him a call. before I call so I have information to give him. >> I've never had trouble before this works in Sebastian. >> Yeah. >> Oh, I just came. >> So, you you'll get a [laughter] big phone call at the jail. >> So, first thing in the morning, you'll go to first appearance. You'll see a judge and then the judge will decide on when >> Yes, I know your phone number. I just called you. >> All right. Valentine is a valid question. >> Well, no. I wrote it down and then I had to go in my phone and look to make sure that was right. >> Yes. >> Well, because >> we all take it on Can we do the whole one thing? >> Yep. >> Just don't run or charge. >> It's very obvious that y'all are walking behind. >> Yeah. Literally walk out. >> Huh? Literally walking around. I've never gotten in trouble before. I've never made like not the whole You know what I mean? >> I know that this is not a No, it's not. I didn't see that one. >> The Crown Vic. Never had bracelets on this. >> No bracelet ever. >> No. Like never before. >> Like I'm freaking out, but I'm trying not to. >> So the the reason >> I don't know anything. >> Stop reaching your pockets. >> Oh, no. I was looking at I have I have miscellaneous pockets. Just put your hands up on the top. God, >> I'm so embarrassed because people >> No, no. Up top. Up top. I just got to make sure you ain't got nothing else on you. Okay. Are you wearing a bra? >> Got to ask. You know how many people we get? We deal with that. Don't. >> I have to. Here. >> Do me a favor. Just hook it with your pinky. You can leave your shirt off. Nope. >> Hook it. Hook the front of it between. >> I don't know how that I'm supposed to do that. >> That's right. >> Turn your face. Careful. >> Open the door. I'm sorry. I I know different. >> I understand. Turn your hand just like that. There you go. Just trying to make sure I lock them so they don't adjust. >> I'm not going anywhere. >> Yeah, I said they don't. >> Yeah, you don't want to be sitting down and they tighten on your wrist and start hurting. Even though they're not the most comfortable thing on the planet already. >> This is very >> In the end, she was charged with diversion of a controlled substance. When an employee chooses to take the bold route to freedom despite evidence stacked against them after a heist, regret becomes inevitable. >> So, you've been identified as a person of well, a person that stole from this establishment. >> I haven't stole anything from here. I mean, I take food home. That's about it. >> Okay. So, why would that camera have you >> accessing that safe and taking money out of it? On a sunny, bustling day in Orlando, Florida, officers responded to Kiki after the restaurant's cash manager, Andy, reported that an employee named Michael Bridto had been caught stuffing his bag [music] with cash taken from the safe. After watching the footage, the officer approached Michael, who was unaware that Karma had now gotten the worst of him. >> Hey, Mike. Put your hand on your back for me. Put your hand back. Just relax in just a second. >> You're my burrito. Craig. Yes, sir. >> You're being placed under arrest. >> I'll let you know in just a second. >> I just got >> That's fair. >> Loosen your wrist. >> 11411. You have your ID on you? You don't have your ID. Where do you live? >> I just told you that. I will explain that to you in a second. >> I just got here from work. What is going on? >> Come on back here. Let's have a Let's have a rest on the wall. >> What did I What the hell did I do? >> Do you have any weapons on you that I need to know about? >> I don't. >> Okay. And you are Michael Burrito. What's your middle name? >> Can I What's going on? >> Look, I don't understand what to do. What's your middle name? What did I do wrong? >> Come in here and have a seat. >> Do you have any weapons on you that that I need to know of? >> I don't have any weapons. >> Okay, go ahead and have a seat. >> Have a seat. >> I'm going to take this off. >> Why am I getting placed under arrest? I can't go to I can't go to jail. Despite being in handcuffs, Michael looked completely unfazed, as if he believed that he would walk away without a single scratch. But the writing was on the wall. Whether he saw it or not, every answer he would provide to the officers would either throw him a lifeline or give him a trip to the Gray Bar Hotel. >> How long have you worked here at Kiki? >> About I would say about uh four or five months now. >> Four to five months. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Do you have M1 data? >> I don't like both. >> Um, >> I think so. >> You think so? >> I'm there. Yeah. >> Okay. This particular Kikis or Kikis in general? >> Just Just this particular one. >> Okay. You've not worked anywhere else? >> You've not worked any any other Kiki? >> No, I haven't. >> Okay. >> Andy, >> what do you need to talk to Andy about? >> Just I want to talk to him, bro. >> This has nothing to do with that. >> My boss. >> What would that have to do with him? I I mean what's going on is what I'm trying to see what's happening. >> You're being investigated. It's a criminal investigation. >> Michael, what's your suffering? >> Um I'm being crim criminally investigated. >> So why am I in handcuffs then? >> Well, that's how we detain people. You understand that, right? >> Yeah. But I mean I'm I'm just saying >> um you know I I haven't done anything. So, I I'm like real confused right now. >> That's what we're here to figure out. >> I just got off of probation. 2 years >> for what? >> Not one violation. >> For what? What did you have probation for? >> Uh it was uh what was it? A burglary to a conveyance. >> Okay. >> I think it was >> vehicle burglary. >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Um >> should be m i h a b r i t o. >> My wife's step uh my wife's >> What's your date of birth, Michael? >> August 25th, 1994. >> 8:25. My wife's brother. >> You still live at that address. >> Yeah, that's you, right? It's >> your driver's license picture. >> That's you. >> Yes, that's me. >> Okay. So, you've been identified as a person of well, a person that stole from this establishment. >> What? >> Mhm. >> Stole what? >> Do you want to tell me or no? I haven't stole anything from here. I'm going to take food home. That's about it. >> Okay. So, I'm going to lay it out on you, okay? Cuz I'm I'm already got I've already got all the questions I need answered. I just want to have your side and you to be truthful about it >> and being investigated. >> Correct. Cuz you know there are cameras all over this establishment. >> Yeah, I know. >> Okay. To include in this room. >> Yeah. >> Okay. So why would that camera have you >> accessing that safe and taking money out of it if you haven't stolen from this establishment? >> That is safe. >> Correct. >> I have never taken any money out of that safe. >> Why would the camera show that then? And why would people identify you as being the one that did it? >> Uh I'm not sure, but I I have never taken money out of that safe. When When did I take money out that safe? >> Yesterday. >> No, I did not. >> Okay. >> No, I did not, sir. Like, can I talk to Andy about this, please? No, because that would be in tampering with a witness. >> How? But I'm not arrested. You said that I'm I'm criminally being criminally >> criminal investigations to include witnesses. Yes. >> To include witnesses. Okay. >> Right. So if you talk to your boss because again at the end of the situation is is he's the one that's witnessing everything that's occurring because it is his responsibility. For some reason, somehow, you have you on camera looking right up at that camera, going into that safe, removing the envelope, taking $427 of cash and putting in your pocket. Yes. >> I never took $427 of cash. Did >> you take anything? >> I took nothing. No, I I opened up that safe to look for uh some something else for my arm, like another type of medicine for my arm, cuz I have the medicine. >> Why would a medicine be in a safe? >> I didn't open up the safe. >> You just said you did. No, I opened up the cabinet to look for more medicine because >> that medicine cabinet is there and I have gotten band-aids from Pop, my other manager. He's given me band-aids before from that cabinet. >> In a lastditch effort to clean up the mess that he had made, Michael led the officers to the cabinet, hoping that he could piece together a story convincing enough to clear his name. But what he failed to understand was that he would need more than a slick story to pull the wool over the officer's eyes. >> I never go into the safe. I I I >> So then why would the video have you on it doing it then? >> But I did not take Did it take It might have had me opening the cabinet. Yes, sir. >> And then removing cash. >> No, not removing cash. I >> But there was cash. Why would you do such a thing? >> I didn't I didn't. >> What? Do you need the money for Christmas gifts or something? Rent or some sort? >> No, sir. I get paid coming. I get paid every week. Every two weeks I get paid, sir. >> So then why would you take the money? >> I did not take any money at all, sir. I I did not I I opened the video. >> I already saw the video. Right. >> Right. But I didn't take no money. >> It's clear as day. It's you >> as me. What? >> Michael, do you see that camera in the corner right there where I'm playing? Right here. >> Yes, sir. >> Notice this is where safe is. Correct. >> And do you not see that how clear that video is? So, it's not we're we're not asking you this out of nowhere. He's asking you these questions for a reason. >> Right. >> Your cooperation is key. >> I understand. >> I already have all the answers I need. >> Right. Okay. So, so, so, >> but truthfulness goes a long way. >> Can I please talk to Andy? I can't go to jail. I I have a son that I have to take care of. >> You can absolutely go to jail. >> I I'm not >> I'm not going to let you sit here and talk to somebody into not pressing charges against No, no. I wasn't going to I'm not going to do that. I just want to talk to him and see what's going on. >> I told you what's going on. I literally told you exactly what the allegations are against you. >> And your defense is I don't know what I'm talking about. >> What about my son, Donald? >> Whose responsibility is that? >> That's my responsibility. Exactly >> right. And I did not take I You got me on video probably opening the the safe the the opening the cabinet. Yes, I probably opened the cabinet, but I did not take from the safe. I did not. >> I pro I opened up the cabinet yesterday. Yes. Because my arm is I'm trying to show you. I just had surgery on my arm. You had >> Go ahead and stand up and sit in this chair. Stand up. Sit in the chair. >> Where did I sit in my chair? As tension clouded the atmosphere, the officers were beginning to doubt if the footage they had watched earlier was actually true. >> Hey, Daniel, can you come uh play a portion of the video for me or just have me have access to it so that way I can play it? >> Yep. >> Are you comfortable being in the same room as it? >> He's very adamant that he didn't. >> All right. >> This is the only I'm not I'm not I'm telling you not to talk to him. >> I'm sorry, Dan. I didn't do anything, Ben. >> Okay. He's going to play you the video. >> Okay, fine. >> To prove >> that it's true. >> Fine. I All right. All right. Look, I didn't take anything out that safe. >> Okay. This video is going to show you different. Here's the video. >> All right. Damn. >> Oh, sit down. >> You have to have a son I have to take care of. Dan, I'm out of my paycheck. >> That's you. >> Take my paycheck. >> Why would you want to take something out of your paycheck [laughter] if it wasn't nothing was taken? That's you, right? >> If he's saying that I sent you Yeah. I'm on my phone, >> right? That's you. Just wait. >> What? Yesterday. >> That's you 100%. >> Yeah. >> You're watching the camera. Oh, open there. >> Yep. I'm looking. I'm looking. >> Take the envelope out. >> There's no envelope. Look, >> sir. There's no envelope. >> Look at your hands. Look right there. Cash. >> What is that? >> Cash you're putting in your pocket. >> You didn't take anything, though. >> That is cash that I put in my pocket. >> Correct. >> Did you forget about that somehow? >> No. >> You understand? Now you've obstructed my investigation. You lied to me. >> Finally, Michael had accepted that he had made a mess of himself. But then he was about to learn that every action comes with a check. >> You have two felony charges now when all I wanted you to do >> I don't need two. No sir, sir. Sir, >> because this is BS. This is ridiculous. >> Oh, I can't do anything about this. >> No, please. Can we just >> If you would have been honest with me, I would have reduced it. But you weren't honest. >> You reduced what? >> To just theft. Now you got a felony. >> No, this All right, sir. Two felonies. >> Sir, please. Sir, please just listen to me. >> You had a chance. You know this game. No, I'm just saying. Listen to me. Listen to what I'm saying. >> You can't go to jail. >> Yes, you can. Absolutely you can. >> Okay, fine. If you're going to take me to jail, >> I have no choice. These are felony charges. >> Who's pressing charges? >> This establishment. >> Why? >> You stole their money. >> You just stole their money. I >> If I could >> And you're an employee. That's a theft. >> All right. Well, I apologize. If I could just >> That has nothing to do with >> You had the ability to tell the truth and you lied. You still lied. I showed it to you on camera and you still want to say you didn't do it. >> All right. Listen, I'm sorry that I did that. My bad. I understand. >> You act like I'm stupid. Like Officer Dalingham stupid. Like your bosses are stupid. >> I think they're stupid. >> That's disrespectful, dude. So, go ahead and stand up. >> Wait, hold on. Let me >> go ahead and stand up, >> sir. Sir, please stand up. I'm sorry, sir. Wait. Wait. >> Come on. We're going. You have no Don't do Don't make this worse. We got everything out of here. >> To the left. >> Can we go out to the back, please? >> To the left. I got parked in front. Well, actually, you know what? If you want to hold him, I'll bring him out back. >> We're going to take him out the back. Yes, sir. Does he have anything you need off of him? Like his shirt or anything like that? >> No, sir. >> Okay. >> Thank you. >> You got it. I'm going to grab his property. >> Step down. >> Oh, I'm going to grab this stuff. >> Come on. Step down. >> Oh, you can leave my bag here. Oh, my arm. My arm. My arm. My arm. My arm. >> My arm. My arm. >> Okay. What does your arm have to do with anything? Come on over here. >> You're squeezing that arm, sir. >> Okay. I'm holding you tightly because again, you're a flight risk. >> Ow. Ow. Ow. Ow. >> What's wrong with your arm? >> I just had surgery on it. >> Where? >> Surgery on uh right here. You see the scar? >> Open open my my sleeve. That's my sleeve. >> Front part of the arm. It says he >> All right. Spread your feet. You have anything that's going to poke me, stick me, stab me? >> No, sir. Oh, wait. >> This is crazy. >> Have you ever taken anything else? >> I never took $400 out of that safe, though. >> It was 40 bucks. >> So, it went from I never took anything to it was $40. Michael, you have a pathological liar mentality. >> I'm just saying you have you said you me on camera. >> Yeah, I showed it to you and you still are going to say that you didn't take anything. >> I didn't say I didn't take anything. >> Well, it went it started that way. >> Well, I'm just trying to tell you, >> which is absolutely ridiculous. >> I'm just trying to tell you that you want me to tell you the truth. I'm telling you for my >> You had that opportunity way before all this. >> I don't understand. >> I had to show you an actual footage. >> That's where $400 came from. >> Yeah, that's the amount that you stole, sir. I only took >> That's what was missing. >> That's not the amount that I owe. >> That's the amount you're being charged with spending. >> Am I going to have a bond at least? >> Yeah, >> you should. >> I don't know how much it's going to be. >> 225250. >> This is crazy. Okay. >> Can I Can I call my dad >> at the jail though? Give me the opportunity. >> My phone just to let him know. >> Have a seat. >> He's by himself and he has heart issues. Just call him on my phone, please. >> Have a seat. Put your feet in. >> Oh, these these pillows. >> Yeah. They're not meant to be comfortable. >> No, just a little out the bone. >> Watch your head. In the end, he was charged with firstdegree petite theft. Stealing from your boss might look like a quick payday, but being caught and hiding behind a prank story only becomes a recipe for disaster. >> Yeah. The man outside said that I took his wallet yesterday. >> Okay. >> Did you take his wallet? >> No, sir. I did not. >> Okay. >> You are a thief. You stole it and we saw it. >> So, you're going to go to jail if you if you don't cooperate with us. Do you understand that? what it was to you as a prank, >> then ultimately it's it's it's not a good prank because it is theft. Okay. >> On January the 23rd, 2024, just minutes before noon, officers responded to a local car wash after the manager reported that a 60-year-old employee had stolen his wallet. After reviewing the surveillance footage, it quickly became clear that the allegation was true. But when they began to interrogate the manager, what initially looked like a straightforward theft report started to appear a little more complicated. >> I'm just very confused right now. What do you mean you're confused? >> Why? Why? Why would something hit my wallet like this? >> Cuz he thus we have we have it on video. So >> he sent me some weird stuff, dude. >> I don't know. >> Well, what I what I think we need to do is we're going to confront him and see if he'll return it first because you have your ID and stuff in there. Yeah. >> If not, we still have the video. I mean, bottom line is I don't know if the money's ever coming back, folks. We'll see if we can get your wallet back. You can ask them, >> but again, that's going to be up to them. And you >> pass on my social security card, everything. All my all my personal >> What? Uh, what's your first name? >> Are you wanting to press charges? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Something else going wrong with that guy? >> Yes. >> He didn't send me some weird stuff. >> Like what? >> I need you real bad. >> When he when's he sending you? >> Yesterday. What? I want to get once. that he needs you real bad. >> Yeah. And I asked him, "Dude, you're all right. I'm going to send you home." Like, "You're acting real weird." Okay. >> I don't know if he was just like slow. What else was his name? >> He just leave me some weird voicemails sometimes. Ask me to come hang out with him. >> Okay. >> Like, dude, he's 60. >> I'm 21. >> Weird, man. >> Okay. >> All right. Well, we're going to show you. >> Just concentrate on the wallet. >> All right. So, we're going to go talk to him. The manager's statement was detailed and convincing. But what they didn't know was that the suspect had already spotted them through the window and was already prepared for the worst. >> Take a seat. >> What's going on? I'm >> officer Bradley Department. Do you have your license with you? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> All right. I'm going to read you something real quick. Okay. >> Okay. >> Before you make any statements, you have the following constitutional rights. You have the right to remain silent, not answer any questions. Any statement you make must be speak freely and voluntarily given. Any statement can be used against you in the court of law. Do you understand these rights as I've read them to you? >> Yes. >> Okay. So, I just kind of want to talk to you about what's going on today. Do you have any idea why I'm here right now? >> Well, yeah. The man outside said that I took his wallet yesterday. >> Okay. >> Did you take his wallet? >> No, sir. I did not. >> Okay. So, if we check cameras, it's going to show something different. >> I don't know. I was watching him. I was My boss said that he didn't know I was taking him his belongings when he left. >> What do you mean you were taking him his belongings? >> He left his shirt here, his hat here, and I went to hand it to him. >> You handed it to? >> No, I went to hand it to him and he was already gone. >> Okay. So, you went to go hand it to and he was gone. So, where did it go after that? >> I brought his belongings back in here and I placed them on the desk. >> Okay. And you haven't seen it since? >> The last time I saw his wallet, sir, it was sitting on the desk here yesterday. That's the That's the last time I saw it. >> Okay. Cuz I'm being told something different. All right. And there's cameras that show us something different. >> Okay. >> Okay. So, either the camera's lying or you're lying. And I don't think they altered the cameras. So, do you want to be truthful with me now? >> Sir, I do not have wallet. I did not take wallet. >> Okay. >> I went to take him his belongings. He They said he'd already left. I turned around and I came back in. I do not have his wallet, nor did I take it. If I would have, I would have called him. >> Well, he said you did call him. >> I didn't call you yesterday. And he said that he's got he said he's got messages from you yesterday. >> Well, sir, if you can check my phone, >> you can check my phone and check his phone. I did not call him yesterday. >> Okay. >> If you want to talk to the lady, Polly, he had lost his wallet last week also. >> Okay. Well, we're more focused about yesterday and we're going to take a look at this video footage and you can tell me what's going on with it. Okay. >> Okay. At this point, the officers were faced with two completely different versions of what had happened. The officers knew that arresting an innocent man would be a serious mistake, while letting a thief walk away would be just as troubling. >> Show the first one, please. >> Okay. I mean, honestly, at this point, I really don't care about the phone conversation that we had with him. I care more about what this video footage is showing. >> Well, I don't have his wallet, sir. Okay. If I did, I would have given it back to him, but I don't have it. All right. >> And where did it go? >> Sir, you're asking me a question I can't answer. Okay. >> You are aware we have cameras everywhere, right? >> Yes, sir. I'm aware of that. >> Okay. That's his wallet right there. >> Okay. So, why you putting a shirt on top of there? >> Well, >> I went to carry them out to them. >> Hold on. Hold on. Watch this. What are you doing? >> I'm looking to see whose wallet it is. I picked it up and I went to take it to him with his hat and his earbuds that were left here. >> Okay. I then walked outside. I said, "Is still here?" "No." I turned around and I came back. >> So, you came back in here immediately afterwards and you >> I went into the room to see if he was there, the next room. And then I came back. >> Okay. And then where did you put it from there? >> I put I put his belongings right back here. >> Right back here. Okay. >> Yeah. What did you just put in your back pocket? I lose my phone, sir. >> Can you play that video one more time? >> Open up the big screen. >> Yeah, just like that. >> Put something in your pocket. >> Yes, you did. >> It was my phone sort. >> Is that showing the wallet? >> Your phone wasn't in your hand when you walked in there. Just the stuff was We want the wallet back. Do you know where it's at? >> I do not have the wallet, sir. >> Video shows differently. The video does not show me putting up. Okay, [clears throat] first of all, I don't need his wallet. I have two jobs. I'm not going to steal his wallet. I don't have his wallet. He lost He lost his wallet last week. Ask any of the employees. We're not talking about last week. We're talking about yesterday. Let me let me point something out. When you were over there, when you were behind that thing over there, you were reaching in your left pocket. You just pulled your phone out of your right pocket. Despite the amount of evidence, the stealing employee who had chosen to stand out for the wrong course was determined to hold his ground at all costs. >> So that means I stole the wallet. >> Well, you're depriving him of his property right now. You're the last one. Listen, listen. >> You're depriving him of his property. You were the last one to have it. And now no longer can it be found. >> So that's why we're coming to you. Where's the wallet, >> officer? I do not have this. They [clears throat] this this is our biggest concern right now. Okay. If you threw the wallet in the trash somewhere, you just have to let us know so we can tell him >> that. So to to put holes on his credit cards, put holds on his social security card and all that stuff. That's the most important thing right now. So if you threw in the trash, just tell us where. Just tell us yes or no if you threw it in the trash so we can tell him. >> Look up my record. >> I don't care about your I don't care about your record. You are a thief. You stole it and we saw it. So, you're going to go to jail if you if you don't cooperate with us. Do you understand that? >> I will take you to county jail for 150 bucks. I don't care. I get paid the same way. So, if you tell me where it's at, we're not going to play this game anymore. We're not going to go back and forth talk about last week. I don't give a I want to know where the wallet is. And if you don't tell me where it is, you go to county jail. It's very simple. So, did you throw the wallet away or not? Be a man. >> Be a man and be honest. >> Did you throw it away? Yes or no. Don't look around. I'm asking you a yes or no question. >> No. >> Up to this moment, the suspect was still locked up in the illusion that he was calling the shots. But the officers had already made up their minds. >> Stand up. >> Stand up. How do you throw it out? >> Stand up. >> I'm not playing this game with you. Just back and forth. >> Can I have my phone and my wallet? Can you bring that with, sir? We'll figure all that out. >> I did not steal his wallet. >> Yes, you did. video shows different. >> The video shows you putting >> Look, if you took the look, if you left it at your house, you threw it away, whatever, and you took the cash, that's fine. >> But he's got some valuable stuff in there. Driver's license, credit cards, >> passports, >> passports, social security card, stuff that you don't need, but that's important to him, and that's that he needs to have. >> Just come clean. I do not have his wallet. >> You may have thrown it away. I don't care if you have it or not. Where did you get rid of it at? >> I didn't throw it out. I didn't have it on my person. [clears throat] I have two jobs. I make my own money. I have my own credit cards. I've been exemplary employee here. I've never missed a day. I've never been late. I have no reason to steal his wallet. >> So, where is it? You watched the video with his wallet right here. You put a shirt on it, grabbed the shirt, went into a back room, and came back. And now the wallet's gone. You understand how that looks, right? >> I understand how >> you were the last person to have possession of the wallet. The wallet is no longer here. You said you went in that back room to look for him. >> And that video, okay, listen, that video doesn't show you looking for somebody. That video shows you walking behind something, putting something in your pocket, and immediately walking back out. >> That's not looking for somebody. That's looking to get out of a camera where nobody's going to be at. No one's going to see you. You're going to turn a misdemeanor, a really silly misdemeanor into something way bigger than it has to be because you just won't be a man to be honest with yourself and be honest with us. You took you took the wallet. You took the wallet. We're not talking. You didn't rob a bank. You didn't kill somebody. You took a wallet. Either way, if if I tell you I have it online, if I tell you I don't have it online. that right now you feel like you're so deep in it that you have to continue to lie because you've taken it this far. I'm telling you right now, you don't. You don't have to keep lying about it because either way, even if we if we don't find the wallet, you're still going to go to jail. >> For what? >> You stole it. >> All right. So, if you get the wallet back, [clears throat] it's a misdemeanor. >> Yes. >> And then what happens? And then we give you a notice to appear and you can talk to a judge about it. And then you go you go home. We take the handcuffs off. I give you a piece of paper. You go home. With the evidence closing in, the suspect found himself backed into a corner. He could either come clean or continue standing by a story that was now quickly falling apart. >> Can you take these off? I will take you to the wall. >> Okay. Tell me where it's at first, cuz that's not how this is going to work. You're not going to dictate how we control this. Hold on. All right. So tell me where it is. We can confirm it and I will take those off of you. >> It's across the street in a storage unit. >> Okay. Where which storage unit? The one right over here. Yep. >> Is it your storage unit? >> Yep. >> Okay. Why is it over there? >> It's where I put it. >> Okay. So, are we able to get into that storage unit to get it out for him? >> Is there cash still in there? >> No. >> Okay. Have you taken anything else out of the wallet? >> No. >> Okay. So, you have a storage unit directly right over here. >> Okay. Okay. And you're giving us authorization to get that so we can go over there, get the wallet. I don't care about what else is in there. I just want that wallet. We'll shut it, lock it, do everything. We'll give you the keys back, all that. We just want to get the property back to him. >> That's fine. >> We can do that. So, the key for the storage units in your car? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> You want to check it out? Yeah, if you don't mind. >> What color is your your car? >> It's white. >> So, everything you told us before was a lot. Yes. Okay. Why? >> I took it to make him crazy. >> Why? Why do you want to do that to him? >> Because he makes me crazy. >> Okay. All right. So, you guys have issues in the past. >> I always had issues with him. >> Okay. And you said the cash is not in there. Where's the cash? >> I didn't take any cash out of it. >> So, there should be cash in it then. >> I didn't take anything out of it. >> Okay. >> That's what I'm just saying. He said >> he said there was $800 in it. >> Okay. Well, that's not what he told me. >> Well, wait. Ask ask. Didn't he say there was $800 in it? >> What do you say what was in it? >> I I don't I don't remember. I'd have to look at my notepad. But he said that there was some cash in it. So, if you didn't take anything out of it, then it should still be in there theoretically. Correct. >> I don't know what he did. I I >> I'm asking you because he's saying that >> I did not take any cash. I went over there and I put it in my set. >> Eventually, he admitted to stealing the wallet, believing that telling the truth would finally end his nightmare. But little did he know that he would need more than admitting [music] the truth to come out of this mess. >> I went over there and put it in my tent. >> Okay. So, let me ask you, what was your intention? How long were you planning on keeping it? Were you planning on giving it back? >> I was going to give it back to him today. >> Okay. Is he supposed to work today? >> Yep. Okay. Have you ever done anything like this in the past? pulled pranks on people yet? >> No. Steal. >> You can call it a prank, but at the end of the day, it's it's >> You're more than welcome to look at my record. >> Okay. Well, I mean, I'm going to because I have to write a report, so it'll show me. I was just curious. But if if that's what it was to you as a prank, then ultimately it's it's it's not a good prank because it is theft. Okay? You deprived him of his property and he wants it back. [clears throat] So >> So you never joked around and had somebody pe keys on them or anything else before you were a police officer? You never pulled a prank on anybody? >> I pull pranks on people all the time, but there's a difference. You said that you have issues with him. So I'm not pulling pranks like that on people that I don't get along with. There's a difference there. So I said you got a $100 bill, 320s, and some ones like $165. >> Okay. Well, he told Blaze and I to >> I confirmed it three times. He said there's 100, 320s, and the ones. >> I'm just telling you what he said to Blaze and I, sir. >> Is there any money still left in that wallet? >> No, there's not. >> Mhm. >> Where did the money go then? >> Just be honest, where did the money go? >> I don't have money. >> Did you spend it? >> No, I don't need his money. >> Okay. I told you I had two jobs, sir. >> Okay. But I'm asking you a question because you >> when I opened it up, there was no money in it. >> Okay. >> Okay. They're [snorts] going to give They're literally going to show me a video that shows me something else. >> Okay. >> There's a bunch of receipts. There's a >> here. We have his wallet. >> Yeah. We were making real progress cuz I mean, you told us where the wallet was and everything about that. I don't know why you're now starting to lie about the money aspect of it. >> You can tell on that film that there's $160, but he told us this morning $800. It doesn't matter. In your case, >> let me let me explain this to you. In your case, the fact that it's not 800 is actually really good. Because if it was 800 and that money's missing, you are 100% going to jail because that is a felony. So, the fact that it's not 800, you should probably be thanking your lucky stars right now. >> You know what? I will go get him $165. I do not have his >> Well, that's $5. >> Listen, we're beyond that right now. That's for the courts to address. All right. >> I just don't get why you're picking and choosing when you want to be honest, when you want to lie. >> At this point, it is what it is. >> So, you can see right there that there's $800. No, the amount of money is irrelevant at this point. If he told you 800, that's what he told you. But he's telling us right now under oath that it's not 800. And when I asked you earlier, you said you took nothing out of it. And I said, "Okay, so theoretically, there should be money in there." Now you're saying there's no money. I'm just trying to >> I looked in there, there was no money, sir. Okay. When I looked in it, so I don't know what happened between the time he counted that or what. Okay. >> But if it's $165, I'll go I'll I'll go to the bank right now and give it to him. I I don't need his money. >> Okay. Okay. Well, let me ask you this. >> It was a prank. >> Okay. Well, let me ask you this. If you didn't take his money, why are you so willing to pay it back? Who's willing to just shell out $165 if they didn't take it? >> Why don't you ask him how much I buy from the grocery store? >> Okay. Well, >> because he always needs money. >> Okay. Well, we're getting off. >> Always needs money. >> Okay. >> Why? Ask Ask him that. Ask him if I've ever >> I don't have Listen, I don't have to ask him that. It's irrelevant. Has nothing to do if you bought him stuff from the store in the past. that's that's between you two. And if that's part of your frustration that led to this, then that's unfortunate. But if you felt like this was part of it leading up to it, why you felt the need to do this, then you probably should have told him, "Look, I'm not going to buy you stuff anymore instead of do going to this route because now it's raised to the point of, like I said, theft." >> In the end, he was charged with petty theft. Trying to pass off stealing as just a prank after lining your pockets at your boss's expense is a losing strategy. But bringing a firearm to your workplace to sell illegal substances takes being in the bad light to a whole new level. >> From hearsay from employees, we heard there was that went down with one of our dishwashers in South like 150 yards worth of fake. >> Hey, I'm getting arrested. >> Oh, carrying a concealed fire. Uh carrying a conceal firearm. On July the 30th, 2022, a frantic call sent Lake Lake County deputies racing to a restaurant in Eustace, Florida. According to employees, a co-orker named Zach, who was into selling elicit substances, had returned with a firearm. >> Hello. How you doing? >> How are you, sir? >> What's going on? So, from hearsay from employees, we heard there was a deal that went down with one of our dishwashers in Solid Prep. Sold them like $150 worth of fake me. Indeed, >> this is all here. This is all coming from employees. But again, word of mouth. >> Yes. Again, >> somebody uttered the phrase that the one guy had a gun >> and he's got a gun on his person. I really don't want to address the situation. Normally, I'd be like, you got the park. I call him fire. >> He's got a gun. I really don't want to situation like that at all. >> Which we were just about to pull one of those gentlemen into the office to write him up for something that happened the other day. >> If you want, I we can go back there. I can um I can just ask if you mind if I've had enough weapons, check him out that way. If he's good to go, then you guys can handle your business there. Is that what you want? >> Yeah, sounds good. >> Okay. >> After documenting the manager statement, the deputies turned their attention to Zach. >> Hey, Zach. Is it Zach? >> Okay. Oh, you're not in trouble or anything. All right. Is there um just can we talk to you for a second? There's somewhere we can go back here. >> I just want to talk to you. There's Okay, I'll be honest with you. There's a Someone said that you have a gun on you. Do you have a gun on you? >> Is that okay? Do you have a weapon? No. All right. You're not in trouble right now. Back here. All right. Don't reach for anything. Okay. All right. Put your hands on this wall. Can I do my hands on the wall? All right. Where's it at? Tell me where it is. Okay. I'm going to grab it. So, I have two shorts on, but they have a zipper on the right side. On the right side, right on your back. You're just detained, right? >> Yeah. But I know what this means. Can you at least make a phone call? One second. All right. This is just for safety. At least step outside so they don't see this outside. I have a belt on. So that's what I was trying to say. >> I got you. >> Is it loaded? >> Uh there's rounds in it, but it's not loaded. Loaded. >> Just want you want to get it off here real quick before we start talking to you. All right. Just make us feel more comfortable. >> I'm going to read you some of the rights. All right. Real quick. >> Wait. If I'm if I'm not in the direction, why are you reaching? >> I always do it >> just in case if you need something. >> Before we ask any how you get this belt off don't reach for it, but >> All right. It's like you got to like >> pull the other side out. >> Yeah, cuz it has like these things on it. >> I remember these belts. >> Contrary to the report, Zach wasn't as dangerous as they had feared. Even so, he had already put himself in the spotlight after bringing a firearm to work. And as it stood, his fate depends on every answer he had to give the officers who had a bulk of questions. >> Having these rights in mind, you wish to talk to us now. >> All right, man. This is your chance to either walk away. You got anything on me that can try to poke any of us? Do I do that? Anything illegal in it or >> I need to make a phone call. >> Not right now. And as it stood, his fate hung by a thread. Depending on whether his managers would decide to cut him some slack or throw the book at him. >> Do you guys allow your employees to carry? No. While you're here. Okay. as part of it because it is private property. If you guys were to allow them to carry kind of yeah, you know, a food creek, but if you guys have a policy saying that they're not allowed to uh then >> Yeah, we have two other managers that keep in the car. So, >> okay. We are going to go ahead and trespass. >> You guys are? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Go fire him. I mean, I know he's part time, but let know that he's not welcome back here. >> Yeah. Therefore, he's no longer welcomed on these premises because he's no longer employed here." Unfortunately for Zach, his managers had no intention of letting him off the hook. Meanwhile, Zach stood outside completely detached from reality. >> I do have a question. Will >> does someone know what what what happened to that firearm? >> It's not stolen or anything. >> No. So, >> here's the deal. You guys keep it. >> I'm facing charges. >> Well, then if that's the case and if you get convicted with it, then you don't get the gun back. >> I ain't I ain't running. If I was going to run, I was not. >> Yeah, they broke. You may have to have these cut off, man. There's a piece of metal stuck down in here. Go see if they have a paper clip in there.
