I'm asking you to roll all the windows. >> Oh, that's how you get 25 years on now. It's the visor on here. >> I'm not arrested. >> We can go to court. Let's go to court. >> All right, internet. I'm Frank Slope. I've got 25 years on as a Sheriff's Office Deputy here in Arizona. Today, we're going to be doing some body cam breakdown. We found today's video on Police Ride Alongs. It's a great channel. They're putting out great stuff. Their videos aren't too long and they're edited great. We love them. While we're breaking this down, we'll be doing some body cam bingo. So, we're going to use card number five. We sell them in a pack of five. You can order them at bodycambingo.com. And then you can play along. But for right now, let's check out this video. >> And they noticed the car in front of them had an expired temporary tag on it. So, they pull the car over and get out to see what was up. >> Here you go. I'm Deputy Kneiser, Orange County Sheriff's Office. Yeah, what do I have you here for? Your license plate expired. Is there a reason why you have that expired? >> Oh, hold on. Cuz I I I just got a new car. >> The officer would signal with a finger to her nose that she smelled a funky odor coming from the car. >> Can I get you a picture of it? You don't have it with you? >> No, I do. It's just It's literally I I My car is dirty. She had to throw it away. >> Yeah, maybe you should clean it. The officer started to peek around. It's not clear if she saw it at this moment, but a 9 mm round of ammo was lying near the driver's feet. >> And I have a license plate that you Are you okay? But yeah, no, I'm just saying the license plate expired in April. >> Mhm. >> It's where our license plate is. You know, she shouldn't be all in the >> Good stop. As I'm driving around all day long looking at vehicles on the roadway and looking at license plates, if there's two license plates that I check all the time, I check out-of-state plates and I check temp tags. All the time. I'm always checking them for registration expiration. Um a lot of people move to the state of Arizona from other states. They don't renew their registration. It ends up being a great reason for a stop. Um and just like this, they're at a stoplight, heads up Deputy Sheriff looks at the license plates, says, "Hey, that tag is expired." It's a great reason for stop. Just cops doing cop work. That's what this is. And just good police work. >> Well, when you're reaching around, I got to see where your >> Well, you can see where I'm reaching. You can see, too. I'm going to roll my window down. We're not playing that cop game. You pulled me over for an expired license. I have a brand new car, and I have a new license that I can show you. So, is there anything else you need? >> cell phone. Do you have the registration that goes with it? >> Yes, I have everything. >> Mhm. >> Can you lower the windows for me? >> All the windows, yes. >> I'm asking you to lower all the windows. >> all you get. >> You need my registration? >> That's all you get. >> No, what is it about? >> There we go. >> You got a license? >> I'm not moving. >> All right. Oop, I got it for what? >> of the car. >> What about the whole parkway? >> All right, so this deputy is doing good police work. She's looking, she's smelling. Um, she asked the driver, "Hey, can you put your windows down?" Driver says, "No, not going to do it." That, coupled with everything else, and just the adversarial tone, and being argumentative, and not having all of the proper documentation, those are great re- Get out of the car. Absolutely get out. We'll talk to you out here. That is a That is a reasonable request, and it's backed up by the United States Supreme Court case law. She's got to get out, whether she likes it or not. >> You got to unlock cuz you're not You're not giving me any of your information. >> Your body cam on? Is your body cam on? Is your body cam on now? >> They're on. They're on. >> They're on. >> Oh, supervisor. Uh, I don't have that on this one. >> for the vehicle because I said I didn't want to roll my windows down. I gave her the registration. >> If I can't see in the car >> I do not have to step out. Yes, I'm trying to find I'm trying to find it. What you What you trying to touch me for? >> All right, step out. I'm telling you, step out of the car. >> Why should I step out for? That's not lawful at all. I don't >> No, you're wrong. >> If she asked you to step out, you can step out. >> Cop days are unpredictable. Sometimes, it's hard to sneak a bite to eat. Recently, I made a poor life choice and I ate some so-called healthy chips, and it didn't take long to realize that they made me feel like crap. Here's the thing. Snacking doesn't have to leave you feeling like that. Now, Masa chips contain just three ingredients: organic nixtamalized corn, sea salt, 100% grass-fed beef tallow. Other than the health and the flavor, my favorite part is the crispiness. Now, these things are not going to break in your hummus, your cheese dip, or your delicious guacamole. There's a reason that Sprouts Farmers Market, Wegmans, Target, Whole Foods all picked them up. Personally, my favorite flavor is the habanero. Now, you ready to give Masa a try? Go to masachips.com and use code Frank for 25% off your first order. Now, one thing to know, because Masa uses real ingredients and makes everything in small batches, certain flavors go out of stock regularly. So, I just finally got my hands back on the churro, which happens to be another one of my favorites, after it was sold out for weeks. Again, it's masachips.com/frank and use code Frank for 25% off, or click the link in the video, or you can just scan the QR code. >> Because she's asking you to, because she was friendly being a dick. >> your supervisor? >> You're current Do you understand what detain means? >> not detained for no lawful Get a supervisor. >> [laughter] >> Try to call my ID. Nobody told you to give me a lawful order. >> Can I call you by your name? >> for no reason. That's crazy. >> Let's get your driver's license. >> I'm trying to find it. Your vehicle registration >> have a supervisor, 51, please? >> Did you even see if this car was registered? >> Yes, I did. >> Right now, it's got a tag on that expired in April. I just gave you the registration, so go check it to make sure I'm not like holding like you think I am. Try to pull me out of here. >> Well, you have a You have a tag that's on your vehicle that's expired. >> I have a new This is a brand new car, and I have a new license plate in the trunk that I can show you. >> Okay, but why isn't attached? >> Cuz it's a temp tag that I hide for a reason. >> But if you have a license plate that's the time. Okay, but if you have it in the trunk, why is it not attached? >> I have a you have when you get a temp tag you can use it for as much time. I didn't know the temp ran out. It expires. So that means it just expired. >> All right, and are there any weapons in this car? >> Yes. >> Okay, where? Because don't reach don't reach for anything because I'm seeing an ammo on the floor. That's why I'm asking. Don't reach for anything but Are you Oh my goodness, call the supervisor. >> Get out of the car. >> It's in my freaking bag. It's over. >> Okay, just leave it there. >> What am I getting pulled over for? >> Didn't you >> Because your tag is expired. >> We already went over this. >> Can I show you my new tag? >> That's fine, but the fact doesn't change that it's not attached to the vehicle. >> You were supposed to you still have it. That's the proof >> It's a good stop and you're an idiot. >> Still not attached to the vehicle. >> For those curious, the specific Florida law that requires your license plate to be physically attached to the vehicle and not kept in the glove box, on the dash, or in the trunk is Florida statute section 316.605 subsection one. This is a non-criminal traffic infraction. Despite this though, the driver would continue with her argument until she reached the person she was trying to call. >> I did call the supervisor. You can watch it on my body camera. >> Yep, you did. >> The officer would go to put the zero in the patrol car while the other officer tried to maintain control of the traffic stop. >> Am I allowed to get out? You wanted me to get out in the first place. I don't know, man. What's my location? >> All right. Don't go to the trunk. Don't go in the All right, just stand right here. >> Hold on, look. Look at this. Look, look, look. >> No, no, look at it. >> Are you pissed now? >> Listen, listen, listen. >> Look, look, look. >> All right, listen. You don't have to do that. You don't >> What are you doing? Why are you taking your >> Turn off I'm being respectful to you. Respect that in return. >> I'm trying to tell you you don't have to do all that. I don't know what you have on you or not on you. >> Bro, she has We got a bro? Here we go. Take that on the bro. >> [screaming] >> I got a don't touch me. On the diagonal. Bingo. In Arizona, we are a unbelievably pro 2A state. All sorts of people have guns. Almost every day I do a traffic stop with someone with a gun in the car. And I base my decision whether I want to remove that person from the car, whether they'll allow me to remove the weapon from the car, whether I don't do either. Every situation is specific to the totality of the circumstances. The car, the occupants, the driver, attitude, there's all sorts of variables that make one decision different than another. But there's absolutely nothing wrong with retrieving that weapon and making it safe away from that vehicle, especially with a driver like this, or asking that driver to to come back and separating the driver from the from the weapon. Nothing wrong with that, either. But typically, at least in my personal experience standing on the side of the road and talking to people with guns, they are overwhelmingly courteous. Uh so, sometimes I I I'm a gun guy, I'm a SWAT operator, I love talking about guns, I like educating people on guns. Um sometimes I get educated and I learn things about guns that I've never seen before. Um that's all great stuff that happens on the side of the road. Not with a suspect like this. This is her attitude makes things different in this stop. Relax. Relax. You're arrested. You're not listening to any of us. Of course you You don't have to What are you doing? Sir, are you a supervisor? Put your hands behind your back. For what? What am I getting arrested for? Yeah. Now, we already got her for what? Because you're not listening to lawful orders. So, we're going to put handcuffs on her? There we go. right now because you're being incredibly uncooperative. No, because y'all just took my gun. Y'all just took my Absolutely, because you're sitting there with the the butt of the gun sitting out next to the passenger. It was not sitting out. You're lying. Of course it was. All right. And my ID's right there. Y'all see that? Okay, that's fine. So, what y'all doing? We're going to check everything. You are being incredibly uncooperative. What a terrible human. You said you didn't have your ID. I said I did. I couldn't find it. check your body cam, stupid I did say I had a body cam. That's Mhm. What a delightful human being. Restrain me, right? Two of y'all. You're restraining just fine. What do you want us to do? Can I at least get my phone? Can we get it first? Just have a seat till we figure everything out. And I don't consent to no searches, nothing like that. Yeah. It is It is up to me. I don't consent to I don't consent to no searches. I don't consent. You don't have to consent. Right now, you're detained. I'm not detained. [laughter] You didn't even detain me for nothing legal. Okay, which is legal. You didn't check to see if it was, did you? Exactly, you're going to get us some You didn't even check to see if my firearm was legal. Sit down. All right, you're detained right now, right? You're not under arrest. We have to do further investigation, all right? And there we go. That's her. As requested, a supervisor would arrive shortly thereafter to discuss the situation. How you doing? I'm doing good. How are you? All right, I'm Sergeant Littlejohn. Yes, sir. What's going on? Sir, I got pulled over for an expired tag. Okay. The situation obviously escalated itself. I'm very upset. You're the supervisor? I want to report >> these two officers uh first of all they they escalated the situation way more than it had to be. She pulled me over. She said you have a temporary tag which I understand. When you get a new car that's what they give you. I have my license plate in my trunk which I tried to tell her. You know I got pulled over so I was a little jumbled. I couldn't find my freaking license. I told her that as well. So I'm obviously upset and I understand that. But sir I didn't break no damn laws. They don't have a right to illegally detain me. I didn't do anything. I didn't run away from them. I didn't physically harm them. I didn't threaten them. Also this is illegal and it's hot back here. And I'm trying to tell her that she said the air is hot. It's hot back here. It's hot. And then it's like I told her everything was good in my car. They took my gun. So then after they took my gun I got out to go get my >> We can do that. >> Then they detain me. I don't know what you have in the trunk. You just took my firearm. Like what are you talking about? My license is good. My registration >> You could have two firearms. >> That is that doesn't give them the right to detain somebody. I didn't break no damn law. >> Okay. >> Like that's the problem. >> All right. I'm listening to you. Let me just say a few things, okay? >> Yes, sir. Yes, sir. >> All right. Correct me if I'm wrong. Did they give you instructions not to move around or grab that firearm or go back to the trunk? >> Well that's the thing. She didn't let me she she tried to unlawfully remove me from the vehicle so I would have been out regardless. I got out when I wanted to get out. That was >> When they found the firearm >> She took it. She took it. So I didn't have no firearm in my car. >> All right. So So they legally detained you on that. >> No they I didn't No they didn't legally detain me. She literally before she even illegally detained me she removed me. She tried to forcefully remove me from her my vehicle. And that's on her body cam. >> She gave you commands to step out of the >> No. She didn't How does she give me a command to step out of the vehicle if I didn't even get a chance to? >> She said get out. >> Okay. Can I report Can I report Can I report? That's what I want to do. >> You're reporting it to me right now. >> Yes, sir. Yes, sir. I'm Officer Candace and and what's her name? Officer Rising or whatever. I want to report it. I want to I want a physical police report. >> There's there isn't going to be a physical report. >> Okay. I want a report. I want to report what just happened from them to them. Cuz it's two damn officers. And you know what's crazy she she got a video video on body cam and I got a video on my phone. >> Okay. >> Like when you're officer I get that y'all have a job to do, but you y'all don't y'all be breaking laws. Y'all literally broke a law. Talking about something you got an expired tag. So, why you fishing for more If it's for an expired tag >> It's literally our job. >> car looking like that. Like y'all HAVE CERTAIN JURISDICTIONS. ROLL ALL YOUR WINDOWS DOWN. I DO NOT HAVE TO LEGALLY roll my windows down. >> Well, no law exists. Refusing to adequately roll your windows down can be viewed as an officer safety risk. So, the US Supreme Court has said gives officers the right to tell a driver to step out of the vehicle. >> There we go. >> Pretty much what this officer had done. >> I'm asking you to roll all the windows. >> You need my word that's all you get? >> Come on. Yep. Yep. You can step out. >> So, you broke another law there. That's why >> When they give you a lawful command, you have to comply with it. >> to sir. I You was You was started. You know damn well there's no such thing as a lawful command. There's no such thing as a lawful command. Not playing with me. There's rights. There's rights. >> I didn't break no rights. >> It's a safety issue when they see the button. Let's go to >> Let's go to court. Let's go to court. No, because now you now you started talking command. I hate when y'all say there's no such thing as a lawful command, sir. >> Do you understand how communication works? >> So, this suspect says that the situation escalated itself. No, it didn't. You escalated the situation by having a terrible attitude, being aggressive, and being an agitator during this stop. That's it. That didn't The situation didn't escalate it. You escalated it, and the deputies in turn then did what they had to do to maintain control of the situation. And mandating you got to turn your body camera on. You turn your body camera. It's just uh they're on so they can record you being a terrible human, which is why we're watching this video. And then to demand a supervisor, I give all the props in the world to the supervisor. He's probably in the area. He goes and stops by, and he absolutely hears nothing of the BS that this suspect is throwing. He doesn't want to hear it. She is She is not a good respectful conversationalist. She just wants to talk and flap her mouth and give a a sermon from the pulpit of misknowledge, because that's what she's doing. She has no idea what the law is. She has no idea about case law, about our Florida state law. She's just there think saying what she thinks, but it doesn't make it right and she's not. And the sergeant which she demanded that the sergeant come there and then the sergeant puts her in her place and keeps her in the back of the car so she so he shuts her up. I love it. Good for you, Sarge. >> You not know Okay, one party talks, the other one listens. All right, the other one talks, the other one listens. Just stand by, okay? I'm going to let you pull off. I'll be right back. >> Nice job, Sarge. >> Try to have a conversation with the driver a couple minutes later, but that didn't go very well, either. >> What was your question, ma'am? >> I'm trying to figure out how if I have a legal firearm, why am I getting my vehicle searched? >> Because I smell weed and I can see uh evidence I can see evidence and in Florida Florida, I think there is. I can't complete my sentence with you every time you interrupt me. >> That would be the end of that. >> What? >> Why is there so many police here? >> Because No. Over her attitude. >> Over her attitude? Okay, well, she just started her period and maybe if you guys gave her a minute to calm down >> Yeah, that's not an excuse. >> No, that They came at her first. >> Because she wasn't being cooperative. Go back to the front of the car where I told you to stand a minute ago. >> Why are you talking to me like that? Like I'm doing something wrong. Don't talk to me like that. >> you to told you to stand still. >> Okay, you don't get to talk to me like that if I'm doing nothing wrong. >> You are doing something wrong. You're not listening. Very simple instruction. Stay there. >> Like the channel? Subscribing helps keep this narrator's tags always up to date. >> Nice. We want that. I just renewed my registration, too. >> Who's that? Our father. >> I don't want to talk to him. >> He said he don't want to talk to you. >> How old are you? Hey, how old are you? >> 22. >> Okay, so I don't need to talk to your dad. >> Okay. >> The search of the car wouldn't turn up much other than a negligible amount of the stuff causing that funky smell and the valid license plate in the trunk. After that, the officers were thinking they'd tow the car, but the passenger didn't like the sound of that. >> I have no phone, nothing. I This is me genuinely asking you to release the car to me. I I will make sure it is safe. >> The car's registered to her. >> Huh? >> But the car's registered to her and she's the owner of it. >> I am the owner of the car. And I can And this This is her mom. This is her mom. Huh? >> Well, I don't want to answer all of her requests. >> Well, her grandma is the owner of the car. >> It's not registered to her. >> Um >> I'm on the phone with someone. >> I'm on the phone with her mother. Her mother is >> He's coming to come and get you. You're an adult. You can walk away then. >> I have nobody. This is her parents. >> You're an adult. You can walk away then. >> She's also an adult. >> I told her I have nothing. >> Eventually, the officers decided to release the car to the passenger. >> So, the bottom line is the kindness of these deputies that you guys were giving a hard time with No, listen to me. Can I talk? All right? >> Release the car to you. >> Shut up and let him talk. >> She doesn't close up on it. >> All right, the car's going to go to you, okay? >> The officer charged the woman with resisting without violence, possession of cannabis, and possession of paraphernalia. >> Nice. >> The assistant state attorney wouldn't pursue those last two charges, though. So, she was just left with the resisting charge, to which she had eventually plead no contest. >> Good. >> [music] >> Adjudication was withheld and she was ordered to pay court costs and fines of $373. >> Good. >> She wouldn't [music] pay it by the due date, though. So, the court sent a suspension notice to the DMV. Payment was then made a couple weeks later and [music] the suspension on her driver's license was lifted. >> That's >> good follow-up. All right, card five. A great card for this one. So, we got it on the diagonal. We got the bro on the top, and we got don't touch me on the bottom with the free square in the middle.
