49-year-old Janine Jones, who attempted to take the life of a former employee simply because he knew too much of her dirty secrets. >> Chamberlain scared. >> Bye-bye. >> I need to know what he drive and I need a photo. >> Okay, let me get all that. >> Yeah, it might be fun. >> Is what? Um, >> he just he [music] has too much knowledge of my life that can come back and bite me in the ass. >> Okay, >> here are unbelievable moments when a higher plots go horribly wrong. [music] Meet 21-year-old Julia Murfeld, who believed it would be easier to access her husband's money via his insurance policy by ending his life rather than filing for divorce. I was looking at the at my calendar and I was thinking either the 18th of April or the 25th. I just want to make it as as non suspicious. >> When do you anticipate getting your insurance policy? >> As terrible as it sounds, it was easier than divorcing him. You know, I didn't have to worry about the judgment of my family. I didn't have to worry about breaking his heart. >> How you want me to do it? You want me to >> Unless Unless you can do it painlessly, you're not breaking his neck. In April 2013, Michigan police received a call from a man named Carlos, reporting that a woman later identified as 21-year-old Julia Murfeld had contacted him to help her find a hitman who would take out her husband, 27-year-old Jacob Murfeld. The cops immediately deployed a decoy operation, and with the help of the informant, they arranged for one of their special agents to act as a hitman. On April the 10th, 2013, Julia set up a meeting with the fake hitman to discuss what she had in store for her husband, to whom she had been married to for about four years. >> Nice to meet you. >> Nice to meet you. >> So, I guess we got a little business to discuss. >> Why don't you tell me not to offense? I I want it done. I'm just trying to figure out the when I want it done. It has to be on a Thursday because that's the day that I work. Well, actually on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday isn't working. Um, told you how much, right? >> You said you mentioned 50. >> How are you gonna work? >> That's what I was wondering because with Carlos, I was just going to give him like eight or nine grands because under time and everything and all that crap. So, I don't know how you want to work that way. >> I mean, I would prefer to have something, you know, at the beginning to make sure that you're >> the only problem with that is I can't I don't have it until it's all his life insurance. >> So, >> you know, I mean, how do you how do you mention a couple different things to me >> or something? Yeah, we were talking about insulin. >> Um, >> but you want it to look like a break. >> Well, we were talking about that, too. Oh, since I'm able to get him outside. I have a girlfriend who wants to move in with me and I don't want her to be scared to move in with me. She think she thinks that we got broken into. And then Jake got, you know, >> she would want to move. >> Yeah. So, I'm kind of afraid of that because I want her to move in with me because I don't want to live there by myself afterwards. >> Why don't you tell me how you want it done? >> I mean, I I know what Carlos told me told you about me, but I've done a couple things like this before and I mean I get it done. I just need to know what you want. I mean >> um >> I mean I can do it any way you want me to but I just want to know how you >> really eas that would be great >> but I mean if you absolutely can't I don't understand. So you want me to like I guess I don't I'm not understand >> because it would be messy. >> Do you have any cash laying around kind of give me like a little payment? >> Yeah. I I can give you uh I can give you 100 tomorrow. >> Oh, whatever you got. Show me that you're serious about this. Okay. >> Okay. Um can it be either not this week? Can it be week or two from now. >> I was looking at the my calendar and I was thinking either the 18th of April or the >> Thursday either the 18th or 25th. >> Okay. I won't tell you when it's going to be and I won't tell you know the better. that surprised me with how you do it because I mean they're more shocked when it happens. >> You don't want them to suffer. So I'll make it quick and clean. >> Okay. >> I'll make it quick and clean and I'll just take those things you put on the list and it's going to be quick in and out and I'll get the key back to you later. >> I just want to make it as as >> when do you anticipate getting your insurance policy? >> I don't know. One of my one of my buddies told me that um his His girlfriend was his insurance beneficiary and the guy was and she got it relatively quick. He didn't give me a time frame but she got it quickly. It should be louder than that. >> All right. So, you know what you're going to bring tomorrow? >> Yes. I want You're going to bring I'm going to bring house not to get up to the room where he's going to hang out a picture of him, a list of things you want and a >> good number. Thank you. >> What she didn't know all along was that she was being recorded and that the fake hitman's insistence on a down payment was to get strong evidence against her. The next day, they met up again as agreed. And while they were trying to finalize her plans, she revealed the unbelievable reason for her actions. >> How you doing? >> And this is the street view where you're going to park on the street. There's a street here and there's a front door. Then >> there's no street. That's just the >> street's here and then the front door's here. This is the porch. The main door. That's the one we always use. And that's the key works to either door. >> But this has got an enclosed porch. You got to go through the front door. You got to go through the house. >> That's the house. >> And then this is the relative girlfriend. You're going through the door. This one here, right? >> Yep. >> Just like that. >> It's not that we weren't getting along, but I mean, I was just It was easier, as terrible as it sounds, it was easier than divorcing him. You know, I didn't have to worry about the judgment of my family. I didn't have to worry about breaking his heart. Stuff like this, it's like kind of a clean get. I mean, it's going to break my heart when it happens, but I mean, it's something that I've been thinking about for a while. I think I'm like I just want a little more time. A little more time. And like I mean just so you know JC once I leave here today. >> Okay. So there's no once I leave from here. I'm doing it. You're going to pay up. Is that how you want me to do it? You want me >> unless unless you can do it painlessly. You're not breaking his neck. You know, I would prefer to use either a knife or a quick and easy pain. Less pain. >> Where do you want me to? Do you want an open casket, closed casket? What do you want? >> Not an open casket. I mean, most painless way you could possibly do it. I don't really I don't care about anything else. Just make it painless. >> I'm gonna I'm just going to take a bite face. >> I'm going to put a couple rounds right there's no There's no way he's going to live. He's understands after just let me know. Give you a date of when you're going to have the cash. >> Hey, I'm willing to do it. You know, whatever whatever your reasons are, I don't really care, you know. I just want >> I mean, you obviously like I said, once I leave here today, it's a done deal. It's getting done. Whether you later or not. I'm doing it after the call. It's done. So that's up on it. >> What happens if you get caught? >> Don't worry about that. I take the I'll take the head. I'm not going to give you. You got to make sure you're going to pay me. I'll send somebody else with the cash. If I get caught, you let me worry about that, but I expect you to get my money. make sure that I'm not >> I got people on the outside that'll make sure I get there. >> Okay. >> Anything else? >> Um I think that's it. Just um can we out the 18th? Just the 25th and the second because that extra week. >> Okay. 25th or the second. >> Perfect. >> Okay. Once I leave, done deal. I'm not bagging out. I'm just letting you know that up front. Not bad. I'm going to do it. I don't expect you to be. >> I mean, once you do it, I mean, I'm I'm going to pay you either way, so doesn't matter. I mean, >> all right. >> Thank you. >> Good luck. >> Thank you. Good luck to you, too. >> After collecting the $100 and video evidence, they brought her husband into protective custody before proceeding to arrest her. >> [music] >> In the end, she pleaded guilty to a solicitation to charge and was sentenced to 5 years and 8 months to 20 years in prison. The next case takes us to Palm Coast, Florida, where 63-year-old Kathy Joe Glema attempted to take her husband's life for no justifiable reason. >> She tried to Kathy, stop. >> Stop. >> Why did you put pillows over his face? >> Cuz I wanted to I sat on his face with the pillows. simple about it. >> Arrested. >> Yeah. >> On April the 18th, 2025, deputies with the Flaggler County Sheriff's Office responded to a call at Yacht Harbor Drive in Palm Coast, Florida, following a report of a domestic situation between a couple. They rushed over thinking it was one of those situations with couples that would only require a few talks and they'd be headed back to the station. Hi. >> Hi. How are you guys, sir? >> What's going on tonight? >> She's drunk. I'm a little drunk. Okay. She tried to I tell you what, let's um you want you step over here for him and I'm going to talk to her in private. >> With what they just heard, they knew it was going to be a long night of thorough investigation and recovering of deep secrets and resentment buried in the couple's 30year-old union. >> Do you need any metal? >> Show them where you've been hurt, honey. Okay. And then you said her her shirt's ripped in the back. I'm not really sure what that's all about. And I'm not really sure. It's kind of gone by. >> Okay. >> So, Kathy, show him where you're heard. Okay. >> Did you um see any of this? >> No. We My husband and I were just coming back from dinner and we were walking down and she yelled out for me to help her. >> All of them. >> I'm talking to Can you give me your name? >> I'm Deputy Renar. >> Deputy Renar. >> Can you give me your first name? >> Uh, no. >> No. >> No. Deputy Renar. That's all you know. >> Deputy Rene. >> That's not a concern right now. My concern is for you. >> I'm I just want to talk to you like a person. Okay. Why? >> My name [snorts] is Deputy Renau. >> Okay. So, you don't need deputy. I can't hear. >> I'm I'm going to get with you. One second. You need Do you need any medical attention? >> Where did he punch you, honey? You said you were hurting really bad. He punched me in my head. He punched me all over my head. Punch my back. He punch he punches every >> descending at the We're at the very south dock along the bridge for Okay, my story. Yes, I did fight back. I do fight back. I do fight back. He might have some injuries, too. I'm going to fight back. I'm not going to lay there and let him punch me >> like he does. I'm not going to lay there. And tonight, I I went all out cuz I'm like going, "Why do you punch me all the time? Why do you hate me? Why do you get mad at me, >> man? What's your name? >> Pardon? >> What's your name? >> Kathy. >> Kathy. Okay. >> See how I gave you my name so that you can communicate with me? >> Yeah. So, >> I know, but still. Oh my god. >> Just here to help us, honey. Okay. >> Look at you. You bruised? >> I don't know. I don't bruise, but I can tell you that he punched me there because I It's me. My back is killing me right here. It's >> okay. So, you guys are married? Yes. 30 years. >> Okay. You live on the boat here? >> Yes. >> Which one? >> Macani. >> Okay. All right. Um, what started all this tonight? [laughter] >> I'm sorry to laugh because I don't know what starts it. I never know what starts it. He just gets like he just like a trigger. Okay. So, today I'm working on the boat and I said I'm going to refinish the downstairs. We got stripper all over. I'm going to redo the countertops, redo the wood. Got stripper all over. And I'm going to make it really pretty again. Right. That he he's never on board with what I want to do. I say, "Well, you don't have to be on board. You go away. He's going away. He's going away to the villages to his brothers." >> When When did When did you start working on the boat? What time of the day? >> Was it before? >> About noon. >> About noon. >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. And you when when did you guys start um drinking alcohol? >> The afternoon. >> I don't know what time he started drinking alcohol. I've been >> You've been drinking alcohol, too? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> Which is a really bad thing because I went through rehab. >> Okay. >> And I never drink. I never drink. But yes. >> Okay. >> I had two glasses of wine. >> Okay. So So when did all this start to transpire to where you guys are are fighting each other? like an hour ago. Patrick, before you saw before you saw us after dinner, did you eat dinner? >> No, I didn't eat dinner. He did. I was sleeping and he came in and he told me that I said I was going to remove the plastic and start scraping and getting the countertops done. And he got really pissed at me because I took the plastic off and he put the plastic there because Sassy, our cat, could run around the house tonight. He got pissed because Sassy wasn't being accommodated. Accommodated. >> Okay. >> Sassy wasn't being accommodated cuz I took the plastic off. If you want to come in the boat, you can see it's like I got all this plastic off. I'm going to scrape it off. I'm gonna >> Was that >> redo the Okay, >> I'm gonna redo the cabinets. >> We worked on the boat together. >> While the wife was narrating her side of the story, the officer began to wonder how her story was connected to the weighty allegation her husband had leveled against her. And just when he got the chance, he decided to redirect the woman's narrative. >> Okay. So, so did this this physical altercation take place inside the boat? >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. And do you recall how you were struck? >> How did he >> He punched the [ __ ] out of me. I was in bed. I was And I said, "Okay, I'm not going to go there. I'll put the plastic back on for Sassy. I'll do everything that I can. I do everything. I just like you wanted, John. Okay, the plastic's off. I'm sorry. I did that. I put the plastic back on and I went to bed." And he came into bed. He came into the bed and he start >> All right, ma'am. What's going on? He punched me. He punched me everywhere. He punched me. He punched me in my back. He punched me in my face. He punched me everywhere. >> Just as EMS started examining her, he decided to take the investigation a step further just in case the couple tried to play a fast one and lie to him. >> Well, talk to you while they're dealing with her. >> Um, so you didn't see any of this? >> No, we didn't see anything. Okay. >> We were just We just got came in from dinner and we parked our car and then we were walking on the right by this the ramp and then we passed John. >> Mhm. >> And he just said hi. We said hi and that was it. >> Didn't say anything. >> Yeah, he did. Did he say hi? He >> was very quick. >> Oh, he was very quick. I'm sorry. >> Okay. Where >> we are? One, two, three, four boats down. The the power boat right there on there's a sailboat and then a power boat. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, she saw me as we were walking down and she said, "I need help. Can you help me?" >> Did she say anything to you as far as um what he did to her? >> He just said she he was punching her. >> After talking to the only eyewitnesses who didn't seem to have witnessed anything much, they realized that it was our situation of a husband's words against his wife. At this point, the officers were beginning to see a plot gone wrong. In a bid to find out the truth, they decided to confront the victim with his wife's narrative. >> All I want are my glasses. Okay, here they go. >> Really? You're going to break them? >> Yep. >> Oh, now you can't see. >> Don't punch me, Kathy. >> Don't touch me. >> Don't punch me. >> Out of here. Get the [ __ ] out of here. >> Get the [ __ ] out of here. >> I will if you let me get my contacts in. Will you stop please? >> No. >> Why? What have I done? What have I done? and Kathy. >> G I don't know, John. >> GI Joe. GI Joe G. I don't know how I don't know what you've done, John. You just like like up Prince the out of here. Will you stop, please? Stop. Stop. Please. Will you stop? Stop attacking me. I don't want to hurt you, Kathy. Stop. >> You can't hurt me. >> You can't [ __ ] hurt me. >> Stop. Stop. You broke my glasses. You threw me contacts. Stop. Don't attack me again. Stop. Please. Kathy, stop. Kathy, stop. Kathy, stop. Stop. Stop. Will you stop? Stop, Kathy. >> No. No. >> After listening to the voice recording, they finally began to see the suspect for what she really was. So, they decided to talk to her again, hoping that she would come clean this time. >> All right. Where do you want me? >> Uh down here. >> If you could just sit down. You could >> off the boat. >> Yeah. Yeah. I don't want to be on the boat right now. >> But you can't talk to me if I'm sitting right here. >> Well, we can stay right here. Just I don't want to be on the boat. >> Okay. >> Um So, you were sleeping today? >> And careful. >> How are you woken up? >> Sleeping today. >> Yeah, you were sleeping. >> Yes. >> Mhm. >> How was I woken up? >> Yeah. I think I woke up by myself. >> Okay. You woke up by yourself. Okay. So then what happened when you woke up? >> I took the plastic off of the project that we're doing. >> Mhm. >> John said, "Don't do that because I covered everything in plastic because Sassy will come downstairs and she'll get into the stripper." >> Mhm. >> I said, "Okay, I'm sorry. I It's kind of my project, but you're kind of running it. So So I put the plastic back on the >> Okay. So So when did you guys start butting heads about this situation? Like this evening. It was obviously after you had woken up. >> Yep. >> Okay. >> Obviously. So I put the plastic back on. >> Mhm. >> I thought everything was good. But I can never do things right. >> Okay. >> So I didn't do it right. So he got mad at me cuz I didn't do it right. >> Okay. >> So, uh, I said, "And you're really drunk." Called him. I said, "Man, you are really drunk." And I >> Do you remember anything about your physical altercation you had with him? >> Yeah. >> Okay, tell me about it. That's what I'm trying to get to here. >> I I called him some nasty names. He called me some nasty names. >> Okay. >> He started punching me. >> I put pillows over his face. I fought back. I fought back hard. I usually don't fight back. I usually just lay there. >> Why'd you put pillows over his face? >> Why did I fight back? >> No. Why did you put pillows over his face? >> Cuz I wanted to cuz he I I don't like him being mean to me. >> Okay. Was he laying in bed when you did that? >> Yes. >> Okay. So, he was he started hitting you then you did the pillows? >> Correct. I sat on his face with the pillows. >> Okay. And I'm That's my That's my >> Okay. >> defense. >> Okay. Um, were you throwing things at him? >> Throwing things at him? >> Yeah. Did you throw anything at him? Do you remember doing that? >> No. >> Okay. Was he trying to leave at some point? >> Yes. >> Okay. Were you letting him leave? >> I would have let him leave if he wouldn't have taken my phone with him. He was He took my phone and he took everything. Like I have I have no escape. I have no He took my phone. >> How many? How many phones do you have? >> Two. >> Two. Okay. >> And he took I would have let him leave. He took his phone. He took his little green bag that has all of his medications and all that kind of stuff that he can take and he could have left and we would have been good. >> Mhm. >> But he took my phone. >> Okay. Any reason why he took your phone? >> Why did he take my phone? >> Yeah. >> He's controlling. >> Okay. >> Like how am I going to call 911? How am I You know how I called 911? through. I can't call 911. I can't I don't have nothing. I have nothing without my phone. >> Mhm. >> Right. How often do you use your phone? It's everything. >> How long did this go on for? >> What question is that? >> The the this this little physical altercation you were having in the in the boat. >> Let me tell all the officers make this very very very very clear. I do not want my husband arrested. I do not want him arrested. We lived on 450 ft. We've done it for 20 years. We've been married for 30. It works 90% of the time. He's not a bad man. He just I seriously I've actually never seen him. He's never punched me in the face before. He's gotten angry. He gets angry. I don't know what issues he has going on right now. >> Can I just uh look at your uh your face and head? >> Can you move your hair? Pull your hair up. Where were you hit? >> All over my face and head. I don't bruise. >> You don't bruise? >> I don't bruise. >> Are you injured anywhere other than your head? That looks like might be might be his. >> Having interrogated her husband thoroughly, the cops could see through her carefully crafted story while she continued to build upon the lies. Do >> you mind if I look at your backside? Okay, that's fine. >> I do not want my husband. >> So, >> do you hear me? >> Yeah, I hear you. >> But I'm going to have to make a decision that the both of you are probably not going to like. Okay. >> Listen, >> I again I'm going to have to make a decision that the both of you are not going to like. Okay. I'm going I'm going to step over there and talk to him one more time and then I'm going to make a decision. Okay. Please. >> All right. Sit right there. >> All right, ma'am. >> Yes, sir. >> Step away from here. >> Yes, sir. >> All right. We're going to walk down this way. >> Yes, sir. >> I'm going to help you. I just have to take some better pictures of you. Okay. >> Yes, sir. >> Keep on walking. >> I've gotten down on my knees. >> He's going to take you down. He's taking you down. >> No, I'm We're going down here, ma'am. >> I know, but I could not arrest you. Please, I'm down on my knees to >> Okay. Why is that? Why are you doing that? Why are you grabbing my shirt? I'm not being combative. >> You're not listening. We're walking down here. >> All right. >> I have to take you to my car because there's more light up there and I have to take some pictures of you. Okay. I I got to All right. We're going to stand by this light. Okay. I'm going to take some photographs of you. Okay. Okay. >> Okay. >> Hi, Are you married, >> ma'am? I'm trying to take photos of you. Be still. >> All right. All right. Place your hands behind your back. >> May I ask what I'm being arrested for? >> Simple battery. >> Being arrested. >> Yeah. >> Really? You're under arrest for a domestic battery. >> I'm being totally cooperative and you need to put contacts on me. >> You're not being charged with anything. >> All right. I'm going to walk you around to this far side of the car. I'm going to put you in the back seat. >> If I promise not to do anything, can you take the handcuffs off? >> This kind of aggressive. >> So, so what's going to happen is um I got to take you to the hospital first. We're going to go to the hospital. >> Okay. And then the handcuff handcuffs will come off there. Okay. But for right now, I need you to be in handcuffs in the back of my car cuz that's the rules. >> Yes, sir. >> Yes, sir. >> You put me in an enclosed cage here. Do you really need the cuffs, >> ma'am? That's the rules. >> I'm trying. >> Okay. You're just Oh, this is so ridiculous. [panting] >> Oh, are we just going to sit here or what's the deal now? >> Well, huh. >> You don't want to tell me your name. I have to find it. Ready? >> I'll get on the other side and help push you forward. Okay. >> Can you just >> What do you need me to do? >> I need to get out. I can't pull my shoulder off of this. >> Okay. >> So, I'm going to help you back here and help you. >> Are you ready? >> Yep. I need to sit up. Thank you. >> Thank you. >> Good. >> Thank you. >> I good. >> After the medical assessment, Caddy was taken to jail. She was eventually charged with domestic battery. Although those officers outdid themselves for exposing heinous crimes, these ones deserve an award of valor for uncovering the famous black widow case involving 49year-old Janine Jones. >> John is what? >> Um, >> he just he has too much knowledge of my life that you can come back and bite me in the >> Okay. >> He's actually on my list. >> I want you going to die with that. something along the lines of carjacking. >> In January 2013, John Chamberlain walked into Northport Police Station with a mission to reveal a decadel long crime that had weighed on him for years. >> You're here today to give us information regarding some kind of real estate schemes of defraud that was brought to your attention. >> That's correct. he was buying up foreclosures and wanting me to do the the plumbing renovations to them and um that's how that's when it really started taking off. >> And how long have you been in there? >> I've been in there since June. >> So from my end last year. >> Oh, June. >> Yes. Things started good and then recently she told me she didn't need my help and she needed me to get out. I've seen them just like, you know, hop through the window, drill the lock, change the locks out. >> Yeah. >> They've keyed all these properties to the same lock, right? >> I don't go in there anymore, but this is the key for it. >> Gotcha. I mean, you can have it if you want. I don't want anything to do with it. I said, Jan, I said I said, you're going to go to jail for that. >> At that moment, the officers realized that they weren't dealing with an ordinary housing scam. Instead, it was a meticulously planned full-scale operation orchestrated by the suspect, 49-year-old Janine Jones. In a short time, John had already revealed a staggering amount of information, too much to process all at once. The investigators knew that they needed a strategy to extract every detail from him. >> Why don't you take me back to like [clears throat] how you came to know uh Janine. I met Janet approximately 9 years ago through church and I became friends with her husband, Max. She told me she used to be a guard at the prison a long time ago and I guess she was fired because she had some affair going with an inmate right away after her husband I can't judge but she was like out there immediately with a new boyfriend. This Matthew Smith, he actually came about. He was our cable guy. Yeah. She knew him for a few months before they went to Vegas and got married. Right when her and Matt first got together, it was brought to my attention that she was being investigated for allegedly her ex-husband Max. And she said that it was, you know, that it was being dismissed for inconclusive evidence. >> Was that Janine and Matt both or just Janine or just Matt or >> No, that was both of them. And I've heard it out of mass mouth that none of these houses are legal and that he was trying to get Jan set up where she'd be like making 10 to 15,000 a month. >> Yeah. So this I mean who's the brainchild of this? Is it Jan? >> Absolutely. I just can't believe what she has turned into. Once I became aware of what she was actually doing with this rental scheme, I came down here and uh and uh spoke with um Detective Stewarts and and told him everything that I knew. >> What John didn't realize when he came forward about Janine's housing scam was that he wasn't the only one taking action. Just days later, police received a call from a woman identified as Amy Wright, claiming her friend was looking to hire someone to take out an individual. The caller later came to the station and after hours of questioning, investigators made a chilling connection. The suspect she described was Janine Jones. She was already on their radar in connection with the death of her husband, Max Jones, and a housing scam situation. The case took an even darker turn when officers discovered that the intended target was John Chamberlain. Recognizing that this might be their best chance to stop her after years of evading consequences, investigators moved quickly. [music] Working closely with Amy, they orchestrated a staged hitman operation determined to catch Janine in the act. >> Anybody coming up there to meet him? >> That would have been a hat for >> Matt. >> Oh, my house today. >> Is it Is it just him though? him daughter. >> He had a lot of questions. >> Okay. >> That's why I asked him who was in the house. >> Mhm. >> Does he have any dogs? >> Two cats. >> No. um wanted to know like scared. Um byebye. Sure you wanted to do >> so gone? >> Yep. You want to leave anybody? You want to take the body? Did you leave the body? Take the body. Body. How soon do you want him? And you want him to take the body? Huh? And you want him to take the body? Are you sure? You want to give us some strategy? >> I'm leaving Mexico State and I'll be coming in until it before that. So, how do you make people do it? If you need to do it house, it'll be a lot easier. >> If you need it then you said 25, but you said you want in this risk. >> He's from the streets, but he's smart, right? Because if it goes on you, it's going to come back on me. >> Oh, I know. >> So, what he was asking me is how do you want it? briefly told me about that he wanted to meet you and I said I don't know how she didn't feel about that he's in line take a look you know you're willing to pay him and >> After their initial conversation Janine sought out a more discreet way to communicate with the supposed hitman had her plans not been intercepted by the cops even the sharpest detective might have struggled to untangle the web that she was weaving >> I'll be honest with you go get you a little track phone with $10 on it cuz we're not doing a whole bunch of cars today. >> Right. If you go to dollar store, they're eight bucks. >> I want to put my credit card on the taxes to me. >> That's right. >> I know. I only want cash. >> Did you get that worked out? >> Oh, yeah. They won't waste too much information online. So, I'm going to try and take the phone and go to Metro. >> Metro on camera, babe. >> What am I going to do? >> Morning. >> Hey, what's up? Home girl said you're looking to get some work done. >> Mhm. >> How soon are you trying to have that done? >> I'm leaving next Wednesday to go on a cruise and I'll be gone until Sunday. So either do it before that or after. >> Why don't you have it done while you're doing it? That make more sense, right? >> Yeah. >> I want it all written down. I mean, if you want it, I need to know where live. I need to know his friends. I need to know what he drive. And I need a photo. >> Okay. >> You get all that? Yeah, I might be fine. >> Hello. >> How you doing? >> How are you? >> I'm doing good. >> Yeah, but nice to meet you. >> Okay. >> How's that? >> Are you going to tell him where to go to? >> Yep. You going to go back out on Price? >> He doesn't know about your seat belt on. I don't need them white boys. Let me know how y'all work. They'll >> get you for anything. Talk to my baby girl. She'll tell you I'm serious about my come down here to play around. What are you thinking? >> You know what I mean? Cuz want you to give me money. >> That's it. >> But I mean there's no mistaking he's bald and >> no twin brother, no none of that. Let's say his family is up to New York. >> Okay. >> Um he's got a daughter which I don't care about. >> While they were still talking, she drove the supposed hitman to John's house. A chilling move meant to prove just how serious she was. But even then, investigators had yet to grasp the full extent of how cruel and ruthless she could be. that fence butts up. That's a possibility. The neighbors aren't really out, but it's dark. >> All right. So, exactly. How do you want to do? Okay. >> If you think just snapping his neck and putting him to sleep that way, >> I'm by my >> You understand what I'm saying? So, I'm going to do it how you want me to do it. You know what I mean? So, you can be satisfied. I can do it. You know what I mean? I'll burn his snap his neck. How want me to do it? I can do. I'm asking you. How do you want me to do it? Well, obviously the least message better. >> Okay. >> For both of us. >> Okay. Option one, >> two is what? >> Um, [clears throat] >> he just he has too much knowledge of my life that you can come back and bite me. >> Okay. >> Max, >> I think he does a hostage for me. >> He's the next one on my left. >> Yeah. Call what you going down with us. >> Something along the lines of carjacking. I have I have one here. I have one at home and I have two in my bank account. >> Why don't you give them give me the money? That's it. It's a It's a done deal. To be done deal. >> Upon stepping out of the car to get the rest of the money, the police moved in on her, securing her in cuffs. After a thorough investigation, she was charged with solicitation to murder two individuals and a house ownership forgery [music] scam and sentenced to two life sentences. In January 2014, her husband, Matt Smith, was arrested and sentenced to 4 months in prison with evidence for forgery related scams. He also received 4 years of probation and a $17,500 restitution fee. In yet another shocking twist, when Bahaya plots go horribly wrong, Dalia Dipolido hired her ex-husband to take the life of her newly wedded husband so that she could claim his assets. >> I'm positive like 5,000% Charlotte. >> Your wife hired somebody. >> In your mind, what what's her motivation? >> We just uh purchased our insurance policy. >> No, we just purchased a home and I just actually signed the title over to her. >> Okay. I'm sorry to tell you, ma'am. his >> In August 2009, officers of the Boon Beach Police Station received a disturbing call from a man later identified as 40-year-old Muhammad Shihare reporting his ex 29-year-old Dalia Dipolo. >> She asked to find someone who can her husband for her. >> Are you scared for the guy? >> Yes, because she's really I mean serious on getting this done. She's maybe 5'6, 5'7. Um dark black hair. She's a good-looking girl. >> The reality was that unless his claims could be substantiated, officers had no grounds to make an arrest based solely on allegations. Determined to build a solid case, investigators devised a plan to gather concrete evidence against the suspect. >> This guy's a professional Islam. His mom is not going to suspicious of you or anything like that. >> Why me? Like, do you know what somebody is? Nobody's going to be able to point a finger at me. Wipe my print off the pictures. >> Really? Hey, you're going to give him something fingerprints all over. >> Upon seeing the picture Dalia had provided, they decided to set up a sting operation using [music] one of their undercover detectives as the supposed hitman. >> Got a picture of a picture of uh the house. Whatever. >> How soon can we get everything going? >> Well, that's it's up to you. because I mean I needed like this week but like my understanding of everything was is that like you know >> I was I was going to give you what I gave you and then that was >> that was everything. >> I gave >> until after the fact and then after the fact I guess you were going to come and like find me or whatever. I mean, I'm good for it. Like, it's not like I don't have it. I mean, I know not to around with you. You know, certain things, whatever. Like, you know what I mean? Like, you obviously know where I'm at. >> I can get it up on Wednesday if you want me to. You know what I'm saying? But I got to do my homework, you know? I got to, you know, know exactly where the place is and how to get out of there, how to get in and out, you understand? What the neighbors want? I got to call the cops, you know, report to see how fast they get to that location. There's a lot of stuff I got to do that's gonna cost me a lot of money. >> So, if we go ahead and we feel it like at the house, like how do we how do we how soon could you do it at >> Wednesday morning? It's going to be like I break into the house. You know, didn't think he was going to be home cuz everybody works in the daytime, >> right? >> I'm going to think he's at work. Boom. He's not at work. Then, you know, he gets two in the head. That's it. You know, I take a couple things with me, break a couple windows, make it look like a robbery that went bad. It's all over him. Gone out of there. We going to be asking you questions. Although they know it's going to be obvious what it is and they already know, but you know they're going to ask questions because that's how they got to do it. I don't know how well we handle pressure. You understand? I don't know, you know, cuz I don't want >> No, I'm not going to, you know, I'm a lot tougher than what I look. I know you and you're like, "Oh, what a cute little girl." Whatever. But I'm not You are You're beautiful. >> Thank you. But, you know, >> I just need to make sure everything's going to take care of >> between now and when it's done. You know, you have to have an option to change your mind. Even if you change the mic, not talking to him. >> There's no changing. No, there is no like I'm determined already. I'm positive like 5,000% sure. >> Okay. >> Around 6:30, 7:00, we always walk the dog in the morning. >> Okay. >> We walk the dog across like over where the lake is and our door is always unlocked. >> I'll be in the house by 6:30 Wednesday morning. 6:00 in the afternoon. >> All right. >> All right. Well, thank you so much and I guess >> you'll hear from >> I'll hear from you. >> All right. >> All right. Thanks a lot. >> As their strategy was unfolding, investigators decided to bring in her husband, Michael Dipolid, to help them understand why his wife of barely 6 months wanted to end his life. But what he had to tell the cops was a heartbreaking story of love, greed, and betrayal. >> Marino ID 696 with the beach police department. >> All right. Also present in the room right now is Mr. uh Michael Dilio. Can you go ahead and explain your last name? >> Um they already know why we're here. reference this whole cabin investigation where uh your wife hires somebody to >> um >> and pretty much we're on a fast track relationship getting along great. everything's great, you know, and uh as soon as we we moved out of Bokeh in January and I purchased a home in Boon and I would say 2 weeks after we did that, uh I I hired a lawyer to get off of probation. Um I started giving my wife money because she was going to provide me with the other half of the money for the probation. And uh >> just for the record, what were you on? Probation fraud. >> Just real quick. >> Um organized fraud. >> Okay. >> Basically, we were trading commodities that didn't exist. >> All right, that's enough of that now. >> And then uh I provided her with $100,000. She was supposed to provide me with 90,000. And my lawyer telling me, "It's not here. It's not there." She was supposed to send a wire. The wire magically never showed up. And then the story was just unbelievable. and you know what do I do with that? And then I turned around and I was going to leave. And then she got honest that she messed my money up in some wire scheme where she was supposed to send it and make money on it. And so how long did you date before you actually got married? >> We dated from October to January. >> Okay. >> So however long that would be exactly 2 3 months. 3 months. >> So that's pretty quick. So you get married and then how long after you get married do you start or do you ever feel that something's not right with her? >> About a month and a half right away the money starts disappearing. Uh I had planted on my truck. The officers came out to search my truck. I'm not a dealer. I never was. >> Where did that happen at? >> Uh the Ritz Carlton in Manalapan. I came out one day and we were leaving in the morning and officer approached me. Is this your truck? I said yes it is. and and I didn't know what he wanted. He goes, "Can I search it? There's been activity on it. Someone called." And I'm like, "Absolutely, you can search it." Officer searches the truck. There's nothing in the truck. He lets me leave. Um I figured someone called, but nobody knew we were there. It's an unexplainable thing. >> Were any found? >> The next day I went to get gasoline in the truck. There was my gas cap. So luckily knowledge of that. >> No. No. I mean, thank God, you know, I let the officer search the truck cuz there's nothing in the truck. Thank God he didn't find him because, you know, that would have been a disaster. Um, point being though, it was unexplainable. Nobody knew we were there. Nobody knew we were there. >> Who do you suspect that planted it? >> A hunch. >> A hunch was my wife. Okay. >> And I played it through my head a thousand ways. I thought it could be I'm laughing. I even thought maybe it wasn't me put it there, you know, and didn't remember. But I don't, you know, the point is nobody knew we were there. Nobody had access to my vehicle except my wife. >> What would her motivation be for doing that? You're on probation. >> She at that point, yes. And at that point, she already had stolen hundred and some thousand from me. And uh so now I'm out $100,000 and she got me involved in another scheme to where I lost another 90 or another 100,000 trying to, you know, I basically I lost $240,000 with this girl. It's unexplainable money. I haven't had this many incidents go wrong in my life in and you know I mean in my life and that I've had since I've met this girl like you know I haven't had you know I haven't had my truck searched two three times you know I don't do that kind of you know so all of this is very out of character for me. My life is since I met Dalia and since we've been married, um the dynamics of my daily life have changed drastically. Like I don't have police interaction anymore. I don't, you know, and I've seen the police more than like 10 times probably since I've been with her >> over stuff that's unexplainable and sounds crazy to people. I don't tell people my business anymore cuz they think I'm crazy. >> Listening to Michael's pathetic ordeal, they couldn't be more sure that Michael was stuck in his marriage and needed desperate saving. But first, they had one question for him. >> Let me ask you one question here that's kind of puzzling >> or that we would like answered if we can. What's her motivation for having you? I mean, like why not just get divorced or did she ever mention divorce or separation that? >> Never. >> So, what in your mind what what's her motivation? >> We just uh purchased policy. No, we just purchased a home and I just actually signed the title over to her until I could straighten out all my other problems with probation and uh also you know the $200 and some thousand she stole from me I think is a big motivation to basically I guess with my home and everything else is a half a million dollars of uh motivation. >> Was that money used like restitution to pay back your victims? It was supposed to be >> Yeah. Right. >> And she stole it. >> At that stage, no further evidence was needed. All that remained was to follow the plan and expose her before she even realized what was happening. >> I'm Sergeant Ramsey. I'm I'm the one that called you. Thank you for coming. I'm sorry to call you. Listen, we had a report of a disturbance at your house and there was fired. Is your husband Michael? Okay. I'm sorry to tell you, ma'am. He's been >> Oh, no. He's been He's been part of Listen, >> try to calm down. >> Listen, right now what we do, we need to get you to a station. We need to get you to our [laughter] police station. I can't let you in, man. We have to do our job. If you want us to find this, okay? We need you to calm down. I'm going to need you to go with these detectives, okay? Does he have enemies? [laughter] Is there anyone that would want to hurt him? >> Probation. >> Okay. Who would want to hurt him? Witnesses said they saw a black male running from you. I [laughter] can't let you see him, ma'am. Ma'am, I cannot do this right now. Ma'am, I can't do it. Detective Yopi, [laughter] I need you. I need you to take me to the station. >> I can't. Ma'am, go with these detectives. If you want to help your husband, okay? If you want to help your husband, you need to go to the station with these gentlemen and tell us everything you know about who he knows, who he's connected to. Don't worry, we've already taken care of dogs with animal control for right now. Everything's under control >> and we'll take care of everything else. Okay? >> Thank you guys. protocol that we have to do with this with your wife. We got advise your rights. So, you know, okay, if you don't understand any of them, you just tell me and I'll stop and repeat. First of all, let me just tell you I'm sorry for your loss. >> I just want to see my husband, please. >> All right, honey. >> I love her. I love you. >> No, you don't want to say no. >> I just want to say please. >> Believe me, you don't. Could you listen, please? I'm required to warn you before you make any statement that you have the following constitutional rights. This is something because we're going to videotape that I need you to sign also. It gives us the right to videotape it. You want to read that? >> I don't want to be videotaped. >> Well, you're being videotaped. That's all part of it. >> Whose number is this? That's your home number. >> Oh, >> we got that from our reports that have been filed here. >> And then I'll I'll tell you what's going on here. Listen, is there anybody that you know that you think would want to kill your husband? >> My husband's on probation. >> For what? >> He's for stock fraud. >> Stock fraud. How long have you been on probation? Probation pro. Did you spend any time in prison? How much? >> Do you know? >> Um, two years in prison and five years on probation going on to six years. >> Oh my god. And what was that for? >> It was for taking money. It was like he explained it like boiler room kind of where they would take money from people towards things. How how long have you guys been married? >> Not even a year. >> This is tragic. Is there anybody you could think of that would want to do this to him? >> I was telling the officers we've had problems already. And >> what sort of problem? >> He's been trying to get off probation >> and it's just been nothing but problems [clears throat] the whole time that he's been trying to get off. Um, people weren't happy that he was getting off probation because it's a lot of money he's got to pay back. >> Well, when you say people, who are you talking about? >> People that were involved with him before or >> a little bit of everything. This was supposed to be something. When he got off probation, it was supposed to be between us and he went and he told, you know, friends of his, he told, you know, certain people and everyone kind of talks and he's constantly running into a lot of the guys that he was on probation with. Like a couple days ago, we ran into someone and that was a target. I mean, you know, and the guy comes up to us and he's like with organized crime. It seems like a lot of the guys from Bokeh are starting to move up here and we're constantly running into, you know what I mean? A lot of the guys that he he knows and things like that. >> Throughout her narrative, one thing stood out. She was masterfully deflecting suspicion, painting her husband as a criminal with countless enemies. But what she didn't know was that she was merely a porn in the detective's carefully orchestrated plan. >> So it was a lot of money. It was $191,000 that he had to pay back. So we were going to go ahead and he had the money to pay off the probation, everything like that. And then I guess somehow when he went away, some guys didn't go away. They left. >> You mean went away? He went to prison, >> right? Okay. >> They left the country. And so somehow he was dealing with some of those guys because they thought that he owed them and I don't know something with that that he was taking care of. So the money that he used to get off of probation, he never >> he never he never did it. He did something else with that. >> Now, do you know any of these people their names or anything like that or where they may live so that we may be able to follow it up? We're not going to we're not going to implicate you. >> The guys that left, I don't know. You don't know? >> I don't know them. You never met them? >> No. I mean, I know the guy that we ran into a couple days ago. I I know like I know certain names, you know what I mean? And I know certain families, they were on the news, like the guys that all just went away. >> Mhm. >> I forget what family. >> See, I Brian and I and the squad that I only work major crimes. We only work homicides and and very serious assaults and kidnappings and police and things like we only specialize in that. We don't we don't work anything else. So I wouldn't know about the money that he may have been involved in or anything else. So I'm asking if you know [clears throat] any names and we can run these guys down and see what they know. >> Well another those group of guys they all went away but he's saying one of them I guess somehow he had a problem. I don't know what problem he had. It was before we met he ran into one of these guys and the guy he thought he owed him something or something happened but they went away. I don't know the one guy that I'm telling you about, Pascal, if he also went away or if he did it. But this just happened like a month and a half ago. They all got arrested again. The same stock fraud stuff again. >> His first name Pasqual or last >> I don't know. >> Is it Pasquali or Pasqual? >> Pasqual. >> Okay. What nationality are you? Spanish? >> My mom's from Peru and my dad's from Egypt. >> Wow. >> Yeah. >> All right. There's uh I understand you got a couple animals at your house too, right? >> So um I guess I want to tell you everything the whole So you guys kind of know what's going on. >> I do. I want to know. >> So that's what happened with that. So he didn't know how to tell everybody what was going on with everything. And so he pretty much he told them that like, you know, I had the money and I took it and I got involved in like a Bernie made off kind of scheme because he didn't know how to tell, you know, his mom and everybody what was going on. >> You're lucky. >> What? >> You're lucky you went to the gym. >> We were supposed to go to the gym. >> Oh, both you were supposed to go. He didn't know if he was going to he just had lipos suction and he had like two leg handles removed from here. I think he had something little >> and [clears throat] um two weeks ago he had surgery and he has >> What kind of surgery? >> The bctomy like the lipo that he had. >> Oh, did he used to be real heavy or something? >> No. Um he used to be and then he got lipo done and I guess the plastic surgeon left like two bulges here. So >> yesterday we went because he had like blood buildup in his back that basically they drained it. So he was like, "Well, depending on how I feel today, but we go every morning. [clears throat] We haven't gone since surgery, but every morning 5:00 a.m. we're both at the job." >> Yeah, >> you got a lot of That's better than me. I wish I could go obviously. >> Well, you know, he's very um he used to be a >> What was his choice? >> Go to um He's recovering alcoholic and so with him it's very important to be like on a schedule and you know what I mean like have a system and very organized with everything. And >> let let's let's get back to u >> for good reasons. The detectives carefully concealed the truth up to that point in their conversation letting her believe that she was the queen of deceit and that she could somehow wriggle her way out without any suspicion. is is u I don't know if you know he was he was shot twice and I want you to know all this. >> Do you know this? >> Did they tell you out there? >> Not exactly. I mean they told me he was when I was at the gym I got a phone call. I didn't hear my phone rang and I called back and they told me just the police come that something happened at my house. >> Yeah. He would evidently your husband answered the door and they took him back upstairs and in your bedroom >> have cameras though. Why would he answer the door? >> He doesn't answer for anybody he doesn't know. And I mean the only person like his probation officer is like the you know he would not answer the door. We have cameras like at our house. >> Maybe he knows this person. I didn't know you had cameras because when we got there some of your neighbors heard the the commotion. >> We have cameras. The front door has camera and the back door has cameras, but they don't record. >> And you they don't record. >> Nobody knows that. But they don't. We told everybody they record, but they don't record. >> Oh, no. >> Because he didn't want them to make a hole in the garage for the recorder to be there because of his car. >> Well, when we got there, your door was wide. When the officers got there, your door was wide open. They went in, looked You have a They said there was two dogs in the house in a in a crate or a cage or something like that. and uh um he was found in the bedroom. He was shot twice in the head. >> He wouldn't open the door unless it's somebody that he knows because we don't open for anybody. >> Now, you have to understand I wasn't there. Neither was he. We have other people there. So maybe it was maybe somebody broke into the house or something. I don't know. I haven't se I haven't been to the scene yet. All of our rooms have TVs and we look specifically like to make sure nothing is happening because we've had incidences and things like that. >> Was he asleep when you left? >> No, cuz we said sort of but not really because of his back. He was just kind of like >> laying there. >> He was just laying there and he set the alarm, you know, >> but I mean I said, you know, I'll bring you coffee on the way home and you know, normal like normal. >> There was no alarm. There was no alarm sound going off. I put the our little dog downstairs and he stayed upstairs with the big dog. >> I don't know how big is the dog. >> It's an English bulldog, >> but he doesn't do >> Will he bite somebody? >> No, he loves everybody. I mean, he will run off with whoever he sees. The one that's very aggressive and mean is the white one. >> It's probably the smallest four pound dog. >> I think she's weighs 200 lb, right? >> Um >> Um I'm just trying to >> Yeah, I I'm going to I'm going to what I'm going to do right now. There's a lot that like I want to tell you. >> I'm going to be back. What I want to do is call right now. I'm going to go out and get in touch with the officers at the scene. I want to see if the house was burglarized. >> Okay. >> All right. Just one sec. >> Thank you. >> You want to leave here? >> At this point, they were already getting tired of her repetitive stories and decided it was time to cut to the chase. Now, >> you know that I advised you your rights, right? >> Okay. The game's over with. Okay, there's no more games with you and I. Now, we're going to get down to serious business. I want to know if you know this guy. Come here. Bring this guy in here. Get over here. Get over here. You know who this guy is? >> No. >> You've never seen him before? >> I've never seen him before. Ever. >> Do you know her? >> Put your head up and look at her. >> Put your head up. >> I've never seen him. >> What were you doing coming out of her house? Get him out of here. You're going to jail today for solicitation. You're under arrest. That's an undercover police officer. We filmed everything that you did, recorded everything that you did. You're going to jail. for solicitation of firstdegree murder of your husband. >> I didn't do anything. >> Did you hear what I just told you? >> I heard what you said, but I didn't >> Everything Listen to me. >> Everything has been recorded. You were photographed in the convertible when you sat his car in the front of CVS. What do you want to do? What do you want to do here? >> Listen to >> I didn't do anything. >> You're going to jail. >> I didn't do anything. Please. I didn't do anything. Tell me you didn't do anything. >> I didn't do anything. >> You're going to jail today. As soon as I'm done. >> Oh my god. >> They're going to come in here and handcuff you and take you to the Palm Beach County Jail, book you for solicitation of firstdegree on your husband. Your husband is well alive. >> Thank God. >> Oh yeah. Thank God. >> No, he doesn't want to see you. >> I still wanted to see him. >> He doesn't want to see you. >> Please. >> You better quit your plan. Listen to me. Oh my god. >> I want you to quit your acting and get this over with. >> You know what? >> Yes, you are. >> Okay. You know what? You need a real good attorney. You need a real good attorney because we're going to show them the film where you say you're 5,000% sure you want him. You think I made that up? You think I made that up? It's exactly what's going to happen. I'm putting talk with you when I leave this room. No other officer will ever talk to you again. The next time we see you is when you're in trial and you can make it right here or you're going to trial and you're going to do life in prison. If you want to cooperate with us, whatever you want to do, it's over and done once I walk out. I'm not coming back in to talk to you and no one else is either. What do you want to do before I leave here? Cuz the next officer comes here going to handcuff you and take you to the jail. >> See my husband, please. No, he doesn't want to see it. He doesn't want to see it. I'm leaving now. Can we have an officer come in here and cop this the person? >> I don't know what's going on. Please go ahead and arrest report. Police station first. What's happening, please? >> Can we finish that up? Oh my god. >> He's alive. >> Come here. Please come here. Mike, come here. Come here. Please come here. >> Can't fix it. >> Why not? I didn't do anything. Where are you? >> Mike, come here. Please come here. >> Okay. Mike, can we check it back to both of you, please? In the end, she was convinced of solicitation of first-degree murder and sentenced to 20 years in prison.
