Say that [ __ ] again. >> You're mental. >> What's your first name? >> [ __ ] you. That's what it is. >> In the line of duty, police officers often face high stakes encounters. Sometimes having to confront suspects one- on-one. But what happens when that balance shifts and the cops lose this one-on-one fight? Got my gun. Got my [ __ ] gun. Here are several highstakes encounters when cops lost their one-on-one fights. Starting with this man who showed no mercy even as a female officer pleaded for her life. >> Stop. Stop. Stop. Stop. Stop. >> Get back. Yes. Get back. >> Get off me. >> Give me back up now. Give me back up now. Not pleased. >> You can't help me. >> Kevin, Kevin, please. >> On October the 12th, 2018, two officers responded to a dispatch call regarding a safety concern in North Hayakum near Lincolnshire. But the situation quickly flipped and it was the officers who ended up needing rescue. >> Stop. Stop. Stop. >> Stop. >> Get off. Get off. After throwing one of the officers into a bush, the man turned his fury onto the second officer, launching a relentless attack. >> Get back. Get back. >> Go. >> Let go, Jess. >> Let go. >> Get the car. Give me a cuff. Give me a custo [Music] her door. So get off me. >> Give me back up now. Give me back up now. Thought please. >> You get off me. >> Kevin, can we please just >> give me my c? Just get a cuff. >> You punched me. >> Get a car. >> You punched me. >> Yeah, you're too You're too right. >> Yeah. >> At the time of compiling this video, updates on the condition of the officers and the man remain unknown. However, it's worth noting that the assault on emergency workers act was introduced in 2018 in response to the rising number of attacks on emergency personnel across England and Wales. While that incident was chaotic in its own right, it's nothing compared to the violent showdown inside the police precinct where an officer clashed with a suspect and got battered over a flimsy argument >> because you're talking about some kind of manifestation. >> It's tell is that you know what that tells me? >> What? >> That you're mental. >> You're [ __ ] >> You have to leave now, sir. >> Or what? >> You have to leave now. >> Say that again. >> You're mental. You think I'm playing, bro? Huh? Ain't nobody [ __ ] mental. >> On September the 14th, 2023, a man entered the lobby of the Youngstown Police Department in visible emotional distress. The officer on duty at the auxiliary office handling station reports tried to speak with him, but this only marked the beginning of a wild twist. >> I need to make a complaint so I can get finished. >> Welcome, G. manifestation. >> Yes, manifestation [ __ ] >> Okay. I'm not exactly sure what you're talking about. You >> need to talk to like the chief or something. >> The chief only talks to people if they make a an appointment. You only make you have to make an appointment with the chief to see him. >> I have to call him or something. >> Okay. >> You can call him bro. You know what? Let me call somebody from my You can have it like JXW something. >> Okay. >> Okay. You're welcome. She's not in her office. Yeah, but everybody you need to talk to that you want to talk to >> are uh you have to make an appointment to see them. >> Well, that's the way it's going to be. You can say no all you want. >> Okay. I have someone who actually needs help. Can you have them? Sir, don't be difficult. Just just there's no one that will talk to you. >> Probably will. No. >> Yeah, >> because you're talking about some kind of manifestation. >> It's tell is that you know what that tells me? >> What? >> That you're mental. >> At that point, a bit of a deescalation would have gone a long way. Especially since the officer already sensed that the man, later identified as 27-year-old Khan Sims, was not in a stable state of mind. One way or another, it was clear that trouble ran deep in Sims system. Say that again. >> You're mental. That's my face. [Applause] Say it. >> You have to leave now, sir. >> Or what? >> You have to leave now, sir. >> Call someone right the [ __ ] >> I am not calling anyone. You have to leave. >> Why? >> Leave. >> Make me leave. >> Leave. >> Make me leave. >> Make you leave. >> Yeah. >> Make me leave. >> Make sure this is on. You have to leave, sir. Make me leave. >> Say that again. >> You called me [ __ ] >> Say that [ __ ] again. >> You're mental. Bro, the [ __ ] out. Think I'm playing, bro? Huh? Ain't nobody [ __ ] mental. [ __ ] call somebody so I caning talk to someone. >> Get off me. Say that again. Say that again. >> We can do this all day. >> Yes, we can. >> Yeah. Yeah. [ __ ] [ __ ] Not today. Yeah. Do y'all hear this [ __ ] out here? Who is it, man? >> I have no idea. >> All right, we're just going to roll him over. Take my gun belt. >> Get a hand before I get off. >> Give me my uh hand. >> You're getting press on. >> All right. Roll on your stomach, bud. >> Get the off me, baby. >> Get off me. Roll on your stomach. [ __ ] move all over. There you go, [ __ ] [ __ ] >> Here, give me >> Sims entered the Youngsttown Police Department lobby in emotional distress, but that gave him no excuse to lash out, and he was not finished yet. Unchecked anger, as it turns out, can take a dark and unexpected path. >> I got something for you on that, boy. I got something for all of you. Let's go. Let me see you again. >> Hope so. Rock. >> Yeah. Thank you. >> Um, yeah. Okay. Watch. >> I'm going to get all >> What's your first you? >> That's what it is. >> Yeah. Grab my nuts. I'm calling the cops on that. It's not how you do this [ __ ] Okay. You want to suck my dick while you at it? You want to look down there or something or you want? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Yeah. Stay on. You do first punch, fagg. >> That's why I got you. >> He came in wanting to speak to somebody over me. >> I'm trying. >> And he starts talking about some kind of manifestation happening. Exactly. >> So, I told him, "Nobody's going to talk to you cuz you're acting like a mental." No. >> He got mad because I called him. >> Exactly. >> All right. Um, >> we got him. We're probably going to need a transport. >> And he does have some uh mental health. >> No, I doubt. >> All right, bro. >> All right, we're going out the front door. Come on. [ __ ] fix these handcuffs. You guys are getting >> In the end, he may have won the fight, but it cost him his freedom. Sims was arrested and booked in the Mahoning County Jail in charges of aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony. Two counts of assault on a police officer, both fourthderee felonies, and misdemeanor counts of resisting arrests and obstructing official business. He remains in custody after his bond was set at $100,000. Although Sims took his brutality too far, it was nothing compared to what came next. A woman who turned on a cop with a knife in hand. >> How are you? Oh, Jesus Christ. Back up. >> Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. >> Hey, man. I can hustle doing. Please back up. >> Oh, yeah. >> Back up. Back up. >> Back up. >> On the morning of Monday, September the 16th, around 10:17 a.m., an officer was dispatched to a home in the 11800 block of Sunrise Valley Drive in Reston for a welfare check. The call was prompted by a mental health professional who reported that 33-year-old Sydney Wilson of Restston was in a highly agitated state. Hi man, I'm off. Somebody cut that [Music] >> we have to roll the back In the end, Wilson was taken to a nearby hospital where she later passed away. The officer was also transported for treatment. Unfortunately, his injuries were not life-threatening. Taking it up a notch, one man took on three cops and disarmed one in a chaotic fight inside a cramped space leading to a delicate standoff. >> Listen, right now, what you have is she said something happened. Push. She has a little bit of headache. >> Step off. >> Don't make this hard. Don't make this hard enough for a second. >> What's going on? >> On Tuesday, January the 16th, 2024, at approximately 3:15 p.m., NYPD officers were dispatched to a residential building near Bergen Street and Saratoga Avenue in Brooklyn after a 911 call reported an assault. Melvin. >> Hi, Melvin. >> Yeah, >> I'm police officer running. I work in the center of the priest. Mind if I come in and speak with you? >> I'm sorry. What? >> I would rather not speak to your door. You mind if I come in? Melvin, >> mind if we come in >> or do you want to step out? >> I don't know what to think in regards to >> Can we come in and speak to you or do you want to step out and speak in the hallway? >> It's up to you. What's that trouble? >> I don't It's like I don't know why it's like so many of them. >> There's not that many of us. >> How many of us? >> You said what? >> How many? >> There's a couple of us. I guess at some point she fell, hit her head. She had a little bit of pain in her head. So, for right now, what we're going to do is we're going to remove you from the situation. We're going to go back to the precinct. Once she gets checked out, make sure she's okay and go from there. Okay. >> I don't know what you're talking about. >> Okay. So, what I'm gonna just say now is I'm gonna ask you to turn around and put your hands behind your back. Okay. >> That's not That's not We step out. >> Okay. But we're not stepping out now. >> Yeah. >> All right. So, can you do me a favor? Just put your hands behind your back and turn around for me. >> The man was later identified as 39-year-old Melvin Butler. And before long, things started to heat up. The officers had no idea just how quickly the situation would spiral out of control. What began as a routine response was about to take a very sinister turn. >> Listen, right now what you have is she said something happened. Push. She has a little bit of headache. That's minor. It's a misdemeanor. It's nothing. >> You're on camera. You're with us. >> If you don't cooperate and resist, that becomes a whole another thing that's on camera. That's obvious. >> Right now, you have a he said, she said this. All right, you just step off for a second. >> Don't make this hard. Don't make this hard enough. >> Step off for a second. >> We can't step out. Okay. Look, don't grab. Let me We put you >> got my gun. Y [Music] [Applause] >> during In the struggle, Butter took an officer's firearm and fired two shots while officers returned fire with seven shots total, striking Butler and forcing him to surrender. He was taken into custody and transported to Kings County Medical Center for treatment along with the injured officers. Butler was arrested and charged with attempted murder, assault, robbery, criminal possession of a weapon, and related offenses. Still on cops losing their one versus one fight, this dude bit off a bit more than he could chew. But instead of folding, he grabbed an officer's firearm and fired a shot. >> On the [ __ ] ground, man, on the ground, sir. Get the ground. >> Going south on Home Central. >> On January the 6th, 2025, Houston police patrol responded to a burglary of a motor vehicle. The suspect was reportedly armed with a sharp object. When officers arrived and tried to engage him, it quickly became clear he was not going down without a struggle. >> Hey, get on your knees. Get on your knees. Get on your knees, my boy. Get on your knees. >> Get on the ground. >> Get on your ground. Get on the ground. >> Get on the ground. Get on the ground. >> No, it's cool. It's some trophy that way, sir. >> Get on the ground. It's >> Troy that way, sir. >> Get on the ground, sir. I'm cool. >> Get on the [ __ ] ground, man. Sir, get on the ground. I'm cool, sir. He's running down Bridge. We got actors on the ground. He's running towards homestead. Green sleeve, green hat, green hoodie. >> Still running. Going south on homestead for bread. He's going north on the holster. And soon the energy driving him began to fade. But this suspect had other deeply troubling ideas up his sleeve. What happened next caught the officers off guard, turning the encounter into a tense and delicate situation. >> Bro, stop. >> Oh [ __ ] >> Watch out. Move. Move. Move. Move to go. Oh my god. >> You got >> Careful. Don't move. >> Don't move, man. Don't move. >> Careful. You have control of your gun. Do you have control of your gun? He's >> down. Do you have control of your gun, man? What are you doing? >> Careful. Oh, does he have your gun still? >> Okay. >> Careful. If his hand is on your trigger, be careful. You >> still got my gun, dude. >> Stop rocking the streets. >> Hey, get down. >> Careful. Careful. Careful. His head is on his gun. Be careful. All right. Did you? >> Yeah. Get down. >> Are you okay, brother? Hey, my man. You good? Start taking your stuff off. Make sure you're not hit. >> What the [ __ ] Make sure you're not hit. Okay. >> In the end, emergency responders arrived shortly after and confirmed that the suspect did not survive. Fortunately, no officers were harmed in the incident. Talk about a close call. Sergeant Eric Cooin nearly lost his life after trusting an armed man who did not deserve it. >> What's going on? >> Um, somebody said they're going to hurt my family, so I got to do this. >> Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Put that down. Put him down. Put it down, buddy. Put it down. [Music] >> No, no, no, no, no, no. On November the 17th, 2022, Sergeant Eric Cochran was wrapping up his shift when a man, 42-year-old Nicholas Mitchell, walked into the Ross County Sheriff's Office. Assuming the man needed help, Sergeant Eric, stepped up to hear him out. Little did the sergeant know that Nicholas was in no mood to negotiate. Rather, he was out on a hunt, placing the sergeant in a life-threatening situation. [Music] Hi. >> Hey, buddy. Um, can you help something real quick? Let me get a couple more officers. >> What's going on? Um, somebody said they're going to hurt my family. They wanted me to hurt kids and I can't do it. >> Okay, >> so I got to do this. >> Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Put that down. Put it down. Put it down. Put it down, buddy. Put it Mitchell claimed that someone threatened to hurt his family when suddenly he pulled out a gun. Sergeant Eric hesitated, trying to reason with him, but Mitchell opened fire. I believe he's being outside. >> Who's your best? [Music] >> You're okay. I hear you. We got this. >> Stay down. >> The other officers heard the commotion and immediately came to the scene horrified to find Eric on the floor struggling to breathe. His labored gasps are haunting the tense scene. I believe I'm sending that way now. >> We got him back too far. >> Stay there. Okay. >> I got you. >> You see what he look like? Look at me. Look at me. Open your eyes. Open your eyes. >> Talk to me. >> Where's he head at? >> I don't know yet. >> Okay. >> I'm going to look. Okay. Eric's inside. We got him. Eric's in there. Cheers. >> We have right here. >> Let him know where he had there. Negative. >> My gun. >> You got it. I don't have any red. >> I think you're running. I don't know. We got a deputy that's [Music] >> he's hitting the left side of the head right here. >> I don't know about you over there. >> I just don't want to cover your shirt. Okay. >> You good? >> No. >> You just keep talking, buddy. >> Look up. Look at Abby. Look at Abby. >> I got you. Headquarters. We need two medics here. One for the suspect, too. >> That's all I got. >> Officers eventually moved to assess the suspect who had sustained injuries and was not looking good. Meanwhile, Sergeant Eric screamed in pain as paramedics arrived on the scene to tend to his injuries. >> Keep breathing. You married kids or anything? >> No. >> He He got an injury to the head. >> I know. I know. >> I know. >> I know. >> I know. >> I'm covering the hole. >> I know. I know. No, but over his mouth. [Applause] >> Can you guys clear out here for us if you don't mind? >> We're going to we're going to tape this off here. The officers kept by the sergeant's side for what could be his final moments, telling him just to breathe and talking about his family, desperately hoping that he'd hold on. At the hospital, doctors revealed the bullet had pierced his lung, bruised his heart, and damaged his liver. He later made a full recovery. On the other hand, the suspect, Nicholas Mitchell, passed away as a result of his injuries. Yet another run-in gone sideways as serving a warrant to a wanted man turned to chaos fast. guns in there. >> Hold on. Guns in there. >> Yeah. >> Let's do this. >> Where you at? Sergeant, where you at? Right where? >> No, I'm here. I'm here. Get through. In September 2021, officers arrived at Don Leet's residence in the 5,300 block of Arrow Park at the Timber Ridge Apartments. Dion had warrants for substance related charges. On their way to serve Dion his warrant, officers expected a simple verbal confrontation at best. However, what transpired led to unfortunate losses that would be remembered as a haunting memory and a reminder of the sacrifices that our enforcement officers make to keep us all safe. >> Come the door. [Music] Something just hit the door. >> Yep. >> Good morning. Hey, we have a warrant for [Music] ma'am. Where's Dion? Is he awake? Dion, step out here. Dion, >> there's a door behind the door. >> She looked back there towards the back. So, Dion, Houston police, you need to step out here. [Music] >> When the officers arrived, they were greeted by a female who acted very suspiciously. After getting out of the house, the officers suspected that Dion might be hiding behind the door, but they didn't suspect he'd have a gun, too. A slight oversight that they paid dearly for. It's Houston police. Let's do this. [Music] Dion, it's Houston police. Let's do this. Oh, me. >> No, I'm here. I'm here. >> Let's go get Bill. Somebody get Bill. [Music] He's down. He's down, but I can't see him. [Music] Without warning, gunfire erupted. Officer William Jeffrey was struck, immediately collapsing to the ground. Sergeant Michael Vance, also hit, crawled out of the line of fire. Amid the chaos, the officers focused on one desperate goal, getting Bill to safety. Tragically, their efforts came a bit too late. >> Dion, step on out here. You got to take care of some warrants. >> Can you see him? >> Where is he? >> Where is he? >> No, I do not see him. >> Dion, you need to step out. It's Houston police. >> Right here. You need to step out here. >> There guns in the house. [Music] >> Yeah. >> Dion, it's Houston police. Let's do this. Body cam footage captured the gut-riching moments leading to Officer William Jeffrey's terrible injury. He was shot multiple times and later passed away from his injuries. Sergeant Van sustained multiple leg injuries but managed to survive. The suspect, 30-year-old Dion Leette, was struck on the scene, ending the standoff, but leaving a devastating loss in its
