There he is. >> 63, we're going to take >> Take it. Take 63. I got it. Oh man, what a great launch spot, too. >> Yep. >> Accelerating right in behind him. Nice. >> Holy cow, this thing is fast. >> This dude is a legit traffic guy. >> The reason why I pulled you over on 63 and 45, why you going so fast? >> I was just going with the flow of traffic, man. I didn't even realize. >> Yeah. >> All right. Give me a second. >> following the flow of traffic. >> You were trying to You were leading the flow of traffic. You were [laughter] not >> You were following >> cuz no one could keep up with you. >> Beautiful. Right on. >> Yeah. >> All right. >> Just please, please be more attentive to the speed. All right? >> Yes, sir. >> All right. You guys have a good ride and welcome to No, no, no. You guys are enjoying the company, I get it. Just be careful, that's all I ask, all right? You have a blessed rest of your day. My pleasure. Enjoy the warm weather. >> Are you originally from here? >> I know. I'm from Massachusetts. >> Oh, you're a masshole. >> Yeah, I was from Long Island, Long Island to Massachusetts, Massachusetts >> to here. >> Okay. >> All right. To military, 21 years, then here. >> So, you Were you born on Long Island? >> No, I was born in Massachusetts, and then my parents moved I was 1 years old when we moved out. >> to Long Island? >> Yes. >> I like it. So, out of out of everywhere you could have gone, why here? Why Lee County? >> I chose to come here just the population, the the size of the sheriff's office, just knowing when I came here um the movement, you know, it's such a big agency, you can get where you want to go. Just work hard, you're going to get you're going to get places. You can move you can advance. I choose not to advance. I really love what I'm doing. I'm passionate about going out every day. Every day I can tell you I love coming to work every day. We got a boss. I'm telling you, our boss, I'm not a boss smoocher. Our boss truly cares about us and he truly cares about the county. And not a lot of bosses do that. So, the boss that Deputy Strobel's talking about is Sheriff Carmine Marceno, who also happens to be from Long Island. >> The sheriff might get upset. I'm going to try to steal you while you're here. >> I'm totally good with that. >> Okay. Listen, this is what happens. You know, you don't reinvent the wheel. You steal the best players. People get traded sometimes in sports. I like to steal the best, okay? That's By the way, I think I'm getting my accent back with you. >> You said coffee before. I said, "Hey, it's my guy." >> bagels, right? This is what it's about, man. I know listen, my brother Wayne Ivey does a great job. Chad Chronister in Tampa does an amazing job. We have 67 sheriffs in Florida, but we're tight. We work together, and it's nice that we're able to showcase what we do to like-minded people. Florida is a law and order state. People want law and order, safety, security. If you don't have that, they're not coming down on vacation, they're not buying homes here, they're not sending their kids to unsafe schools. >> And you've And you've checked all those boxes, so people want to come here. >> That's right. That's right. When I say not in Lee County, the Marceno Motel is very active. >> Okay. Okay. >> Very active. >> Vacancies. >> No Wi-Fi, no swimming pool, no fun, lots of vacancies. >> I love it. I love it. Let's fill it. >> I love >> [laughter] >> Listen, listen, you got to make people safe. You know, I look at my hometown and look, our hometown in New York, okay? Where police officers are getting hit with with chunks of ice and rock and having lacerations on their face. I'll tell you this, you'll laugh. I only wish it would snow for an hour here in Florida because I'm telling you now, if anyone thinks it's acceptable to hit a cop with a brick of ice and slash his face, down here, they get their ass handed to them. I'm not taking We're never going to tolerate that. There is a respect level for law enforcement. We work with our local, state, and federal partners here. We got a great partnership, and we've never been more successful. >> While I was in his studio, I was a guest on his show, Coffee with Carmine. >> Welcome into this episode of Coffee with Carmine. I'm Julie Sin, joined by Sheriff Marceno and a very very special guest all the way from Arizona, Friday with Frank, Frank Slippen. We're so excited to have you here in Lee County. >> He came from Arizona, but really Long Island. >> Yeah. >> I'm an islander. I'm a true islander. >> Long Island, we eat bagels and bialys, we talk about Billy Joel, we drive into the city, he gets it. >> it. Everything everything everything he said it's like it's like talking back home. >> Yeah. We're excited to have you here in Lee County. What what brought you here specifically? When you saw LCSO, what made you want to come down here and visit? >> It's your the presence of your social media. A sheriff from New York here in Florida who's who's tearing it up. You guys have such a a prolific presence in social media and a sheriff that overtly supports his guys, wants to put bad guys in jail, make good people feel safe, have a great connection with the community and I mean you you guys are doing it. Lee County is doing it. They're one of the best in the country. >> I'm so honored Frank to have you here. I mean it's like a really big deal. I mean I think I got my accent back. >> Yeah. >> Yeah, >> [laughter] >> I can tell we start talking. He's like, "How you doing? Bagel, bialy, pizza, right?" >> Two New Yorkers can run into each other anywhere. And when you hear that accent, "Okay, where you from?" "Hey, I'm from here." "Hey, I'm from here." "Hey, hey, you know this guy? You know" it's it's such a small community and Long Island is is such a traditional community and when we leave we still bring those traditions home. >> Think about why we're connecting right here, right? We didn't go to school together. We didn't know each other. But social media has brought us here. >> Through the power of social media I'm in Lee County and someone in the lobby here who's testing to come to your agency from Ohio was like, "You're Frank." >> Yeah. >> [laughter] >> Said, "Yeah." >> I love it. >> "I'm here testing with Lee County, but but I recognized you." And that just happened 5 minutes ago in your lobby. So it's it's everywhere. >> What are you most excited about being here today? >> I want I really want to ride well besides me and the sheriff. >> Yeah. >> I'm more excited than me and him. Listen, I got my accent back. [laughter] I'm ready to go to have a piece slice of pizza, you know, it's great. >> And you fold in the middle. >> That's right, you fold it. >> You fold it. >> You're right. See? >> That's why that's why >> bialy? Hey, what's a bialy, right? >> know? You don't know what it is? Come on. >> be put on the spot here. Oh, I don't >> Oh, look at this. >> I'm telling you, I'm meeting the sheriff. He was >> He's the real deal. >> He is charismatic. I mean, you just man, he talks, you just want to listen to him. And he is passionate about this agency. >> And he cares. You know, there there a lot of bosses, you know, that can give you lip service. This guy puts everything in place. Everything he's telling you he's going to do, he puts in place, which is huge. And he cares about you. Knowing he cares, has your back, you know, um it's easy to work here. >> Dude, that's great. >> I haven't set an alarm clock in 9 years since I've been here. 9 years I don't set an alarm clock. >> Really? >> And I get up every morning on time. I'm never late. So, I just love >> to come to work. There's many days I get up at 5:00. I'm still I might be on the other side of the county. He's still I'll stop. If you do me to do something in front of you, I'm going to pull you over. >> it. Got it. I'll bet you 73. >> Nice. People love pulling to the left, huh? It's seen in Arizona. It's prohibited by law. >> All right. >> Yeah. >> Ooh, never be trouble with kind of sheriff side of traffic in Arizona. Pull you over doing 73 in a 55. Why you going so fast? >> Oh, my apologies, sir. I We were barely moving. I was kind of going with traffic. >> All right. All right. Driver's license, registration, proof of insurance. How's your driving record? >> It's perfect. >> All right. All right, give me a second. Yes, sir. >> Yeah, I was unbelievably impressed with how cool your sheriff was, man. I just like that's like >> He's a good dude. And you know what? I'm not a boss, but I'll tell you, I'm not that guy. You ask him, I don't I'm not that guy. I don't look for favors. I'm going to work hard and you take care of us, our agency, that's all I ask. >> I mean, we met each other for half an hour, he invited me to stay at his house. I was like don't do that. Cuz I'll I will show up on your doorstep. Like, hey. >> Yeah, I'm here. I have a suitcase. >> Yeah, you got some meatballs in here? Like, I'm I'm hungry. >> His mom visits from New York all the time, too. So, I'm sure she's got him well stocked. >> Oh, yeah. Right. >> a nice lady. Super nice. >> Please be careful. Be careful pulling out, all right? Have a good rest of your day. >> So, we are in we're in a 392 Challenger. >> Yes, sir. >> Un- unlike most traffic units, yours is fully marked. Light bar, push bumper, regular police car. It's just a really fast regular police car. >> Correct. >> Um all your traffic units are like that? >> Uh no. We have I I was the first one to get this. Then we have another a guy in our traffic unit, Aaron Newbanks, also has one now, also. We have actually we just got a third one. >> Challenger? >> Yes. >> Nice. What do you guys ride for motors? >> Um we got 2023 Road Kings, Harley-Davidsons. >> Okay. All right. We ride my my guys, not me. I am not a motor. I'm the only guy in the traffic unit that's not a motor. Um you are less scared than I am. I do >> [laughter] >> I don't want I don't want to eat the grill of a car, so. >> had the opportunity to go to the school? >> Uh I could go anytime I want. >> school you'll ever go. I think every person that rides a bike should go to that school. >> Yeah, I've heard that. I've heard it's great. >> Amazing. >> Interesting. So, you've got this assigned to you. You've got a motorcycle. And you you >> an SUV, also. >> You have an SUV. Good. An Explorer? Okay, marked, also? >> Yes, sir. >> And it's just traffic unit. >> Correct. >> So, you're here in the traffic unit, Lee County. You have a motorcycle, you have a Challenger, and you have an Explorer. >> Correct. >> You have the most vehicles out of anyone I've ever talked to in a traffic unit. Holy cow. >> I try to produce the show the validity of it. >> Hey, I'm I'm good with that. There are times when issuing traffic citations are the least of the worries for Lee County Sheriff's Office deputies. They've been hammered with some really bad hurricanes lately. Fort Myers Beach, ground zero for hurricane, okay? Ground zero. I mean, I never forget landing the helicopter on the beach. Grady Judd, Wayne Ivey, everybody's on the beach to help. Sheriff Chronister shows up immediately. Sends us every I mean, every sheriff sent us everything we needed immediately. >> Really? >> Every police car, helicopters. They called me on the phone and said, "Listen, the storm's going to hit. As soon as it clears, we have everyone coming your way." So, we were ready to go the second the storm stopped. And I will tell you this, we landed the helicopter. I looked First of all, while en route, homes were burning. You could feel the the heat in the helicopter. And then you land and you look and you say, "Oh my god." You feel so bad for the people that got crushed, right? Literally, their wedding albums are are going by in the water and clothing, buildings gone. We had everyone come together and and that's the team. That's the success. >> And other sheriffs just sent resources to you. Just as a team. >> I'll never forget I told I called Sheriff Chronister. The storm was going to hit Tampa first and I said I said, "Chad, I said Sheriff, I'm going to send you everything I have." He's like, "Man, this doesn't look good, right?" Well, a few hours later he's like >> Himself. >> He's like, "It's cutting up." He goes He says, "Sheriff, I'm sending you everything I have, right?" But the sheriffs got together and Florida Sheriff's Association, uh the Florida sheriffs, stronger than strong. >> Really? >> And they sent me everything. >> Wow. >> Now, you go to Fort Myers Beach and you see people everywhere. The beach is huge. I've never seen it so nice. >> Um miles of pearl white sand, wide beaches, everything's renovated. >> It's like Robert Moses. >> Oh, it's Listen, you're right. Listen, hey, >> [laughter] >> you didn't say Jones Beach. You said Robert Moses, okay? Field 6, Robert I get it. Hey, Robert Moses, a perfect example. We're only successful if the community is working with us as that teammate. And then we've seen it. Listen, Lee County, it's the best it's ever been. The crime rate's never been lower. You know, we see more people see it, say it, make the call. More people are comfortable picking up the phone and calling us and being part of the solution. It's because of social media. Wow. So we have more people here than ever, more calls for service than ever, but yet our use of force is down and the crime rate's never lower. >> That's you have every you've hit every metric for a successful agency. >> It's unbelievable. And you know, people say, "Oh, great job, Sheriff." But it really isn't the Sheriff, right? I'm the guy in the bench watching the team. Our teammates are unbelievable. My family members at every level, they go out there. They're such heroes. They do such a good job. And I'm just honored to share a little piece of the pie with them. >> Yeah, you get this. So social media lets you showcase >> That's right. >> everyone. All the all the rest of the team. >> We have to keep paradise paradise. >> Absolutely. >> And consistent, strong messages that we're not going to tolerate it is is where you want to be. >> I love it. And not in Lee County. >> Not in Lee County. >> And thank you so much for taking some time for me. >> Oh, Frank, listen. It's an honor, man. First of all, thank you for the job you do every day. And being out there on the street, it's tough to be a law enforcement officer, but there's no greater career than helping people. >> And it's easier you work for a strong boss. >> Wow. >> Yeah, when you have the community support. Those are the two things. >> I'm the lucky one. I got the the greatest people, the men and women of the Sheriff's Office, greatest family members, and I got support from the greatest residents.
