From these brave Samaritans who disregarded a wounded [music] officer's instruction to leave a crime scene because they wanted to save his life. No bleeding. Shot in the leg. Shot in the leg. Just get back. Get back. >> Just get back here. What do I do? What do I do? You know, just tell me what to do. Hold it. >> Where's Where's Where is the shot? So, but you seen them in the car by themselves. >> Yeah. >> Here are moments when bystanders took the law into their own hands. The first case takes us to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where a good Samaritan fearlessly helped a pregnant officer to take down 39year-old Steven Gimenez. >> Belly, stop. I'm going to hit him. Stop. Stop. No, he's trying to grab my other cup. Get the other cup. >> I'm pregnant. >> On August the 3rd, 2023, New Mexico officers received a 911 call from a woman reporting that her phone, keys, and SUV had just been taken by her ex-boyfriend, later identified as 39-year-old [music] Steven G. Gimenez following a verbal argument. Officers immediately began searching for the vehicle, and it wasn't long before one unit [music] spotted it. But as backup raced to the scene, the situation took a sudden and dangerous turn when the pregnant [music] female officer decided to go after Gimenez herself. >> Going to be going south on 63. We're almost to I25. He's driving all over the road. Are there any units closer to me so I can pit him and we can contain the vehicle? He's in opposite lane of travel right now. He's putting other people in danger. He's slowing down. He's going to take Old Denver Highway. 104. He's not going to take Old Denver Highway. He has a tire iron. Belly needs. Stop. Get off the road. He's crashing my vehicle intentionally as well. >> Gimnez's vehicle veered off and got stuck in a ditch as he tried to make a turn. But no clear way to keep running. He made a desperate [music] choice. One that was about to cost him everything. >> We're here at the two. He's on foot. It's running at me. >> Stop. >> I'm going to tase you, dude. Stop. Stop. >> Back up. >> Stop. Stop. >> The female officer realized that Gimenez was charging straight at her, taking advantage of the [music] fact that she was alone. She quickly retreated into a patrol car, holding her position as she waited for backup and hoping that they would arrive as soon as humanly possible. >> Stop. [screaming] >> Stop. Stop. Stop. Don'ting do it. Stop. Stop. >> He's trying to stop. >> No. He's trying to grab my >> Get another cook. Get the other cook. Mother, I'm going to tase you. I got him. I got him. When backup finally arrived, Gimenez was placed inside the squad car where he continued to act out. >> I checked in for weapons. >> I'm pregnant. >> So, I need to surrender. >> You tried to kill that lady. Shut up. >> You surrender. >> What are you guys doing? >> Shut up. >> Be quiet. You tried to grab my Shut up. I don't trust you. The cops got over my foot. I'm in my After securing Gimenez at the back, the female officer turned to the brave bystander who had risked everything to take him down. >> You good, dude? >> Yeah. >> Thank you so much. >> I was just freaking scared he was going to grab your car next. >> In the end, he was charged with aggravated assault, attempted battery, and unlawful taking of a motor vehicle. who was sentenced to 2 years and 6 days in prison, followed [music] by two years of parole and 6 years of supervised probation. Just like that, good Samaritan. This citizen took Nathan down a peg after he attacked a female officer in the line of duty. >> I'm going home. >> Well, I need to talk to you, so stop. >> Get off. Get your camera off of me. >> Get back. Yeah, you stay down. >> On January the 23rd, 2025, police received a call from a grocery store employee [music] reporting that a customer had made threats to end her own life. Using the description provided, officers were able to quickly locate the suspect. But what was meant to be a routine inspection quickly escalated in a way that the responding officer hadn't anticipated. Cuz Nathan was a psycho who was on the prowl for a victim. >> What's going on with you today? >> I'm going home. >> Well, I need to talk to you. So, stop. >> Get off. Get your camera off of me. >> You're not going anywhere. >> Where am I going then? >> You're staying right cuz I'm talking to you. >> All right. What? >> What? What's going on with you today? >> I'm telling them the off cuz they had my stuff in the woods. >> I'm out with him. >> I don't really feel like telling this story right now. Okay. >> I got to go home. >> No, you're not going anywhere. >> Why? Who the are you? What's your name? >> Nathan. >> Thank you. >> Anywhere. >> If you do, >> you're not going anywhere. >> You're going to me do it on TV before I spit in your face. >> Don't spit on me. >> Don't get your hands off me. You like me or not? You want to grab my >> You're not going anywhere. >> I got a girlfriend. You're not touching me no more. >> You're not going anywhere. >> You can touch me all you want, but >> Get off the bike. >> You >> get off the bike. >> Or what? >> Get off the bike. >> Yeah, I'm off the bike. Hold it for me. >> Stand right there. Just just don't drop the bike. Quick. Don't make me demonstrate. >> Hands behind your back. >> Put your hands behind your back. >> Can't put them behind my back. You can put them in front. Go ahead. >> No. Put them behind your back. >> For what? >> Because you're under arrest. >> For what? >> Because you're under arrest. >> Still not. >> Yes, you are. >> For under who? >> Turn around and put your hands behind your back or you're going to get tazed. >> Where's my cell phone? Don't put your hands behind. [ __ ] you. >> Get back. At this point, the female officer was beginning to fear for [music] her life, aware of what could happen if Nathan managed to reach her firearm. In truth, all she needed was a miracle because he was at the verge of overpowering her. Get on THE GROUND NOW. >> I'M HERE TO HELP HER. >> Get on the ground. >> All right. >> Get on the ground. >> Yeah. Stay down. >> You ain't with a woman, man. >> No, she didn't. >> Yes, she did. >> You got You got someone coming. >> Yes. >> Stay down. >> Put your hands behind your back. >> Hand behind your back. Put it behind your back. What if you don't resist? Don't resist. >> Yeah. Keep it right there. >> Yeah. >> Don't res this. >> I'm not resisting. >> Yeah, you were resisting. I watched you resist her. >> I'm sorry. That's cuz she >> No. Yeah, because you're listening to her. >> Get off me. >> I can't breathe. Just as backup arrived, officers moved in and swiftly took control of the situation, tightening the perimeter [music] and working to bring the incident to a safe resolution. But it soon became clear Nathan appeared to have anticipated their next move, [music] forcing an immediate change in his behavior as he shifted tactics right there on the spot. >> I got you. I got you. I got you. Oh my gosh, I got him. You want to get up and reset? >> Sorry, hun. I just had to demonstrate >> trying to >> I'm not going to my buddy. I just >> I'm on camera. >> It's not what you told us. I'm busy. >> I didn't I was I'm done. >> Are you hurt, man? >> I'm okay. I'm okay. I'm sorry. Is she okay? I didn't mean that, man. This is president. I'm sorry. I promise. >> Okay. I have no wooden. I promise. I got a girlfriend. She's pregnant. I swear to [music] God. Okay. So, >> okay. >> Can I hit that thing? >> My uh Can you give me my phone and >> we're going to take all your property now? >> All right. Although officers were immediately cautious about his sudden shift in behavior, [music] they couldn't quite determine what he was planning. The change from highly aggressive to [music] unexpectedly cooperative left them momentarily unsettled. But as they started to search him, he suddenly made an unusual request [music] that would soon begin to expose his true intentions. >> Can you not bring me into jail? >> 26. It's under control. You can slow anyone else. Yeah, I'm okay. >> I'm okay, guys. I'm okay. >> No. No. Are you okay? >> Yep. Most of my girlfriend's stuff. Don't my phone and everything. Don't touch it. Don't touch. >> We're taking We're taking all your stuff, man. >> You can't have my phone. Well, you can, but I'll just I got another one anyways. Let me just adjust your couch real quick. >> Don't uh nothing. >> This one. >> Don't uh >> Oh, my hands are freezing. >> Yeah. >> All right. All right. Have a seat. Perfect. [snorts] >> You good? >> Yeah. >> In the end, Nathan faced [music] multiple felony charges, including battery on a law enforcement officer and bail jumping. He was sentenced to 3 years in prison, followed [music] by 5 years of extended supervision. He was also ordered to pay $172.25 [music] in restitution and was granted eligibility for substance abuse and incarceration programs. Speaking of bystanders taking matters into their own hands, one golfer [music] stepped in and managed to trap one of four suspected carjackers inside a porta potty where the suspect had been hiding from police. GET ON THE GROUND. GET ON THE GROUND. GET DOWN. >> Come out. >> Crawl out, dude. Get on the ground. >> On November the 15th, 2023, officers from the Glendale Police Department found themselves locked in a heartpounding high-speed chase, trailing four suspects in a stolen vehicle. The pursuit ended when the officers deployed spike strips, forcing the car to sway out of control and crash in a fatal collision. But just when it seemed the chase had reached its deadly conclusion, the suspects shocked everyone, refusing to surrender without a fight. What followed next left the officers stunned, escalating the situation into something anyone could have anticipated. red hair, black, gray, hoodie, blue hands west. >> GET ON THE GROUND. GET ON THE GROUND. GET ON THE GROUND. GET DOWN. I got >> You want to use this car? >> That'd be awesome. >> We'll get it right back as soon as we can. >> Yeah. Come on. I would take it along the river down by your buddy. >> All right. >> Hey, maybe get this out of here. He goes through. >> Yes. >> To the right. I see something moving back there, too. >> Don't you see somebody? >> Yeah, that's our other officer. We got two of them. >> Okay. >> So, the fastest way out that way is just go out one right here. >> All right. Sweet. >> Okay. >> Thank you. Just moments after the crash, the suspects scrambled to flee, desperation in their every move. One of the passengers wasn't so lucky. She was swiftly apprehended. Meanwhile, the others ran towards a nearby golf course, disappearing into the sprawling green. As officers spread out in search of the fugitives, a lone golfer spotted Philillip running across the field, desperate to find cover. His panic led him to a nearby portaotty where he thought he could hide, but he'd soon regret that choice. The golfer, keenly aware of the chase, approached the portable toilet and with a quick shove, tipped it over. Trapped inside, Philillip was left helpless as officers arrived moments later. What they found was beyond anything they expected. The suspect humiliated and covered in filth. His failed escape attempt now a shocking scene for everyone involved. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. You need to get the out. >> Taking a second overall or there two of them in there. Come out. >> Crawl out, dude. >> Don't do anything stupid. >> Get on the ground. >> Get on the ground. >> Durango. >> Yeah, >> I'll show you. You sure you want them? >> No. I got to give it back to some golfers. >> In the end, Philillip was charged with possession of stolen vehicle, fleeing, and reckless driving. Just when you think that golfer was the ultimate hero for taking down the carjacker, along comes this patriotic [music] citizen who pulled over his pickup truck just to help officers tackle fleeing Miguel Fernandez. >> Damn, bro. On July the 13th, 2023, Tulsa [music] police officers operating in the city's downtown area began stopping individuals for questioning and searches after receiving an anonymous tip that the location [music] was being used for the exchange prohibited substances. One of the young men stopped, identified himself to the officers as David. But as officers instructed [music] him to sit while they worked to confirm his identity and proceed with a routine patown, he suddenly [music] made a move that would turn the routine stop and search into a high-speed foot pursuit. mind getting that for me and then David, if you want to have a seat right here for me, please get >> right 403 pursuit. We're going northbound on Denver left 11 street. As a suspect, later identified as Miguel Fernandez, continued running, almost certain [snorts] that he could get away from the cops, an uninvolved civilian driving a black truck, quickly pulled over and parked, stepping in to give the cops a classic 110% support. >> Black t-shirt, >> short, >> bro. He's in custody. >> Miguel was later charged with resisting arrest and possession of illegal substances. While other bystanders were helping cops bring down suspects, these unlookers refused to be mere spectators by stepping in to save a man's life after a cardiac arrest. >> Coming back up. >> Okay, >> you got it. >> Yep. He was in breathing on the ground. We tried to CPR. >> Okay. On August the 17th, 2024, [music] a man later identified as Bobby was behind the wheel when he suddenly suffered a cardiac arrest, causing [music] his vehicle to veer erratically out of control. Before emergency responders could [music] arrive, nearby onlookers quickly stepped in, taking decisive action to bring the situation under control and to save him from meeting his maker sooner than he anticipated. >> Coming back up. Go ahead. Keep going. >> You got it. Yep. You >> feel it? >> I don't feel no pulse. >> He was just breathing. >> Yeah, he was around a couple of times. >> You ready? >> Give this part two. All right. It came here and came to us on its own right here. >> Yeah. >> Matthew, >> does he usually keep his key fob with him or is it going to be in the vehicle? >> I didn't see it. And I bet I don't look too hard either. >> Huh? I didn't see it, but I didn't look too hard. >> Inside the medic's van, paramedics [music] continued performing CPR, working urgently and methodically in a determined effort to resuscitate the victim. Just have somebody. >> I got you. The moment they regained a pulse, officers moved quickly to inform his wife, [music] who was still visibly shaken and grappling with the reality of how close she had come to losing her husband. >> I can't find this key right now. >> It should still work. We just can't shut it off. >> All right. Hey, you're good. Hey, don't don't pass out on us. Okay. >> Take her up there. Okay. He's got a heartbeat back. Okay. I already called your mom, but we got to get you to the hospital. Okay. It's just >> listen. Take your time. Take your time. Take your time. Do not rush. >> Bobby was later rushed to the hospital where he went on to make a full recovery. Those bystanders who performed CPR on Bobby sure outdid themselves. [music] But then nothing compared to this woman who gave an officer a ride to help catch up with a fleeing shoplifter. >> How you doing, ma'am? >> I didn't take anything. >> Okay, come on. Walk with me. All right. >> I didn't take anything, sir. >> I mean, >> come on and walk. >> GET OUT. STOP. STOP THE VEHICLE. STOP IT. Follow him. Upon arrival, he approached the suspect and started asking her questions, hoping to piece together what had happened. But the suspect had other plans, and it didn't entail answering the deputy's questions. >> How you doing, ma'am? >> I didn't take anything. >> Okay. Come on. Walk with me. From where he stood, the odds didn't look very good because he still had to sprint across the parking lot to reach his squad car before even starting the pursuit. It was a race already slipping through his fingers. But then, just when it seemed like she might get away, a miracle happened. >> HBH031 Mississippi. HBH031 Mississippi. Like a scene straight out of an action movie playing out in real life, bystanders exposed a negligent mother after hearing the sound of little kids [music] coming from the trunk of a car. >> Mom. The mom. It's 90° outside. He left him in the car long enough, multiple people called 911. >> But he's the one that noticed that there was uh they were stuffed in the back of the the trunk and I said, "Oh my god, there are people back there. On September the 14th, 2025, [music] police responded to a Walmart lot after receiving reports of a woman who was hiding kids in the trunk of her car. [music] Upon their arrival, they started talking to eyewitnesses who had made the report, but nothing prepared them for the heartbreaking story [music] that they were about to hear. >> Hello, brother. >> They uh told So the car was off. >> They managed to get the key from inside the baby. >> Is the car on or off? >> The car's off. >> There's another little girl. She's 70 years old. She was I don't know. >> Another person. No, that's grandma. [music] >> Me. I'm her friend. She in the store. But where's the seven-year-old daughter? >> Some lady took in the store. >> She took >> and with the keys. >> The lady took in the store because we was trying to figure out who the parent was. So, because she was the the oldest out of them, they was already over here. >> So, them two plus the [music] seven-year-old were in the car. I pulled. Yeah, cuz they was already over here on I guess calling y'all and I and they couldn't open the door and call up. So when I came I pulled I pulled them out the trunk. They was on top. This one was on top of that one. Mommy, this where your kids is at. I just saying it was locked. I took the back the car seat off top and I just pulled the seat back. It was in the trunk. >> Who's that? Is that the owner of the vehicle? >> The mother got right there. >> Officers could tell the eyewitness accounts carried weight. There was simply too many people saying the same thing for it to be dismissed. >> Are you the owner of this vehicle? Okay. How long How long were you do you leave these? >> Okay. Because we have people that are coming to the car and they're saying that >> this car was off with [music] no AC with two babies in the car >> and I don't know why she got out the car. Then he took pictures of the text. Oh, my girlfriend together in his car. >> Yes. >> Okay. And you were just outside of the car. Seeing the grandma's reaction, the officers were left reading between the lines. Unable to tell whether her frustration was a honest weight of false accusations or [music] a carefully worn mask of innocence. With doubts still lingering in the air, they quietly changed their strategy. >> And are you with them or are you just helping out? >> I was helping out. I walked over here, but I seen them over here. >> Question. You mind stepping over here real quick so I can ask you a quick question? >> When you when you came over >> Mhm. >> who was watching the video? >> Nobody. She that lady lying. She don't even know them people. >> She She doesn't know who they are. >> So she was >> little girl to go in the store herself. What happened was when I came out of Walmart, I seen them already up there talking. I seen them kept saying a great car, but they now mind you, I'm at my car. I'm parked over there. So, you know, I ain't being funny. I'm like, damn. >> I seen the Spanish people over there and I hear them saying kids in a gray car. So, you know, I ain't going to cap. I turned around like what the [ __ ] they pointing at. They keep saying kids in the commentary. >> I never saw her like around the area. >> Them people that Spanish them people say them are kids. Them kids when I pulled them out the back, them kids are old and sweat, bro. They diapers so they smell like >> and she went to take her to go find the mama. So she Yeah. She asked me to watch him while I she go find the mama. And I just gave him the water. So >> did did she leave them in the car until you watch them or did you are you the one that took them out and put them in the shopping cart? >> No, I took I put them in the shopping cart. I just took them out of the car. >> Okay. You're the one that Okay. >> When she heard him talking >> and I told her I was going to leave and she said, "No, don't leave cuz they really don't think they live by theel." >> And then that's when I said, "Well, just watch before I go meet the mom." >> Yeah, I got you. All right, just stand by for a second. All right. >> After speaking with one of the eyewitnesses, officers decided to question the woman again. They anticipated the initial wave of denial often seen in similar cases, but with the amount of evidence stacked against her, they were confident that any attempts to distance herself from the truth wouldn't hold for very long. >> Did you two come here together? >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, you left them in the car by themselves? >> No. >> So, why did she rip out the babies out of the car seat? >> Rip out what? >> Did you go inside? >> She only ripped out the seven >> that the door. So, what happened was I seen >> She's the one that took the >> I open I open I'm going just show you what it look like when I open. Take it like this. You see this whip up like this? >> Sure. >> I seen one baby which was him. >> Yeah. First >> I pulled him out and then that's when I realized there was another baby in. >> So but you seen them in the car by themselves. >> Yeah. They was then she I got her out and when when I pulled her out that's when I seen that one. >> So that must have been when she came to get me to get my car. >> No. So I wasn't in the car alone but they were alone for long enough for multiple people to call. And so when she got hurt, that baby got hurt. So we was like, "Let's just go try to find the mom cuz they was already on the phone with police." I said, "Where the phone?" >> So with all this being said, you left your kids alone. >> Leave them alone. I went in the store to give her the car. I went in there to give her my bank card. >> No, no, but you have to understand, you left them alone long enough for multiple people to call for their well-being. It is what it is, right? Lesson learned. We're not going to do that again because if she would have put the car in drive or put the car in reverse, that's a rem that's a freaking removal, right? Zus will be called. You cannot do that. I'm sorry. It is what it is. I understand you're trying to do whatever it is that you got to do. But mom to mom, it's 90° outside. You left him in the car long enough, multiple people call 911. It cannot happen. And not only that, you left them in there long enough that someone was able enough to remove them from the car. Have fire rescue come, then have the police come. That's too long. Do you understand where I'm coming from? Okay. It's South Florida. People kidnap kids all the time. And that's an easy lick. >> So before we go, I need to make sure those car seats are installed correctly. Got my feet. They already come a little. >> How old are the little ones? >> She's seven to >> grandma. That ain't going to work. >> They got to still get it strapped up cuz she got to take her out. >> Whose phone is this? >> I'm mine. Sit down right now. Sit down. Sit down. Sit down. Sit down. Sit down. How old is this one? >> She's two and a little one. >> I'm going to tell you this right now. These aren't the correct car seats >> for them. >> We Walmart has video cameras. The kids were by themselves for 37 minutes approximately. 37 minutes. I don't know if you let time escape you, whatever, but at the end of the day, they left 37 minutes on the table for >> But it was though cuz we got it on camera. We have you walking in. We have both you guys walking in and then we have you walking out with the cart and then the lady in the purple dress coming to get you. It's between 37 and 40 minutes. Okay. My sergeant is on his way out here. I think he's going to come out here and talk to you and figure out what to do from here. But mom, you can't do that. Does your AC work? >> Okay. >> I just got to >> just >> Okay. All right. Well, you guys just got to wait. Okay. >> At this point, [snorts] the officers couldn't overlook the young woman's apparent negligence. So, nothing quite prepared them for the reaction, [music] especially after she had been arguing her case all along. >> Who do you live with? >> I have my own place. You don't live with anybody? You have any family member in the area? >> Why am I going to go to jail? >> To be honest, yes. >> All right. What did I do wrong? >> Okay. So, I'm going to explain this to you, right? I have two witnesses. We're just going to I'm going to explain to you. Have I have two witnesses, mom to mom, cuz I have a 5-year-old. I have two witnesses that call 911. Your kids were found in the trunk of a car with Oh, yes. >> They play in the trunk of the car. They wasn't found in no trunk of the car. >> No. No. No, that's how they got noticed cuz they heard a >> Yeah, cuz they be playing in the trunk. You can ask my daughter. >> No, no, no. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care about that. >> You can ask why. They always be playing in the trunk. They always >> 90° weather. >> The car was on. >> No, it wasn't. >> I swear to you, you can ask my child. She could tell you the car was on. Okay, but you can ask my daughter. The car was on. >> She's seven. I'm talking to >> It doesn't matter. When you ask that to them, they're going to ask my daughter questions and she's going to tell them. And we're they're also going to talk to two grown adults. Not a seven. >> But y'all not taking my my story either. Y'all just taking inside Walmart. >> Yeah, but not for long. >> For 37 minutes. >> I told you on camera inside that store and you were gone for 37 minutes. >> So I'm trying to help you out. >> No, because I was so >> You don't have any family members? I told her that I was not going to go in the store, >> but because I had need to grab a few extra things, I still didn't need to go with my first mom. I've never been to no jail. >> We know. We know. >> But you need to call a family member to go work for them. Do you understand? >> I cannot afford to go to jail. >> Okay, look. It's either It's either you can find a family member. I mean, I'm not going to have much of a choice, but can I please speak to the sergeant, please? >> I have rights if I can speak to the sergeant, please. >> Yeah, >> she wants to talk to a sergeant. >> You either tell us somebody right now who can come and pick up your kids, somebody that is reliable, somebody that doesn't have a a huge criminal history, somebody that is willing and able to take care of your kids. It's either they go with somebody that you know that they're in good hands or they're going to the state. It is a better option if you have somebody come and pick them up. Cuz if they go to the state, it is not a good look with seless. >> No, it's not. But I just don't understand why y'all can't just send me home. CPI is going to come to my house regardless. I'm going to take a chance. >> You're 100% right. There's they're still coming, >> but action needs to be taken right now. So, it's either you tell it. It's either you again, it's two options. You either tell us somebody right now that can pick them up or they're going to the store. >> But my phone is dead. I have family. I >> You don't have a char. You don't have a charger in your car. >> My car charger. >> What phone do you have? >> iPhone. >> I have a charger, too. Let me throw it on there real quick. >> Yeah. Go around the back. >> Turn around. >> Please do not do this. >> Turn around. Can I please talk to him, please? Excuse me, sir. >> Twist your arm. >> I want you to call family. I don't >> That's nasty. >> Can I please take a photo of my kids, bro? >> And I'll put you in handcuffs. Come on. You're not going to >> Mommy, you'll be out in a few hours. Come on. >> I don't want you to get hurt. >> Why am I going to be able to call somebody for my kid? And you said you was going to charge my phone. >> Your phone is charging. Once your phone is charged, I'll come to you. We'll get a phone number. Who are you going to call for your children? >> I got to call my phone. No, >> cuz that's what I was trying to get you to do earlier, but you didn't want to. So, your phone's charging. >> Her mother was later arrested and both women were charged with child neglect. [music] While other bystanders walked away with a simple thank you, these ones received a meritorious achievement award for saving a trooper's life after he got wounded by a carjacker. 47year-old Guy House in the leg. >> It's not good. I don't have it on here. I've got it on as tight as I can twist it, but I He needs another tourniquet. >> Do you have a belt belt? >> Yeah. >> Get up higher as high as you can. On July the 13th, 2025, state troopers on patrol pulled over a vehicle near Lexington [music] Airport after noticing something suspicious about it. Earlier that day, a black truck had been reported carjacked and officers were actively searching for it. When [music] the patrol officer ran the license plate, it confirmed their suspicions. It matched the stolen vehicle, prompting an immediate traffic stop. But what began as a routine stop quickly escalated [music] into a situation that would put them uncomfortably close to danger they never saw coming. Go ahead and put your hand on the steering wheel for me. Go ahead and put your hand on the steering wheel for me. So, go ahead and put your hand on the steering wheel. What's going on? Reason why you don't have your drive uh seat belt on. It was huh? It was. It was. You got the driver's license. You roll down the back window. What's going on, bud? >> Good. Good. For their own safety, he urgently pleaded with them to step back, but they appeared determined to help him, at least before the [music] medics showed up. For a brief moment, it seemed that they were unconcerned about the danger that they were exposing themselves to by remaining at the scene. Yeah. Three or four. >> Help. Please. >> What are you going to do? >> Learn. >> Yeah. >> Oh my god. Are you okay? Yeah. Oh my god. Here. >> You're not coming out. >> Lean on the leg. >> Here. Leg. >> Here. What do I do? This guy over here in a blue shirt, I think it might have been his truck and when he got behind him, the guy tells him to run and he's like, "No, I'm not running." So he gets out of the truck and the other guy steals his truck, I think. >> Yeah, but he knows everything. >> We found out the truck I'm going to put up. >> This is going to hurt on your leg. >> This guy's over there. See this here? >> Is it all the way back a little bit? >> Yep. >> How far back is he allowed to go? >> Can he go all the way down? >> He can lay all the way down. >> You pour it on your forehead. Just don't go out on side, brother. >> I won't put it in your eyes or your like >> 11:44. [music] >> Okay. That goes the rest of your squad going up. >> You ready for You want a drink or no? >> Here's >> I want them to know that they are going the wrong way. It's going to be at the airport. Pour it on your neck a little bit. >> Is that good? >> Yeah. >> I'm afraid of these guys out here as soon as they stand past the airport. They're passing unmanned award. >> The medics finally arrived and the injured [music] trooper was rushed to the hospital for urgent care, but he would later make a full recovery. [music] In recognition of their actions at the scene, bystanders Jimmy and Jessica Alexander, their daughter Taylor Hall, and airport officer Adam Arnold were later honored at the state police training academy with a meritorious achievement award, the highest possible civilian honor. In another case of uninvolved [music] civilians stepping in, several bystanders were forced to act, engaging 60-year-old Joel [music] Burke Young in a tense exchange of fire in an attempt to stop him from further endangering two [music] wounded officers. Sheriff's office. Drop the gun. >> Shots fired. Shots fired. You >> okay? >> We're both head >> in the head. Officers in the head. >> The neighbors returned fire. >> Oh, the neighbors neighbor those neighbors right there when Bone got hit. They came up to get bone and they returned fire. >> So he was standing there and he said he was a sheriff. >> Yeah. >> And then what happened? >> And then I said you >> on the 10th of February 2022, officers were dispatched to a quiet neighborhood in Maple Falls, [music] Washington. Following a series of frantic 911 calls, residents reported a man on a rampage, firing a shotgun into the air and hurling threats at anyone with an earshot. What started as a minor disturbance rapidly spiraled into something far more dangerous. Upon arriving at the scene, the officers expected to defuse a typical neighborhood dispute. But what they walked into was far from routine. Tension hung thick in the air as the suspect's hostility boiled over, transforming the situation into a volatile and unpredictable standoff that sent shock waves throughout the entire neighborhood and left the police scrambling to contain the chaos. >> Howdy. Who are you having trouble with the neighbors? So, who's out shooting a shotgun in the air? But he's just out here being an pissed about the fire. >> That's correct. That's correct. And you're like, "What, dude?" So, you're going to go, >> "That's correct." >> Yeah. >> You're more than prepared to put it out. You didn't make any threats to shoot anybody. >> Nope. >> He didn't make any threats to you. >> Nope. >> Okay. These guys are pissed off because he's >> Well, he may have. He may have, but I I wasn't overly concerned about it. >> Okay. Okay. Let me go talk to these guys and I'll brief him real fast. These guys are out here all armed up and pissed off cuz they're they're like the local neighborhood >> buddies and watch group, right? They're like, "Why the is he shooting a gun out here?" Mhm. >> yada yada yada. They're pissed about that. >> Officers Ryan and Jason from the Watcom County Sheriff's Department were the first to arrive, stepping onto an unpredictable scene with no idea of what lay ahead. As they gathered details from shaken neighbors, Joel suddenly swung open his front door, and he was about to let the officers know exactly how he felt about the chaos he had unleashed on his neighborhood. What was about to unfold would push the officers and the situation to the edge of control. >> Have we talked to him yet, did he? >> No, no one's talked to him yet. Okay, so that's >> probably a two officer contacted to talk to him. 72 walking the air. >> I don't know where this guy's name is. >> Hey, Ron. You want to go back in the house? >> He's He was back out at the door yelling. So, >> I just don't want you in the backyard. So, Do you know his name? >> Nope. >> No, he doesn't know his name. Yeah, just when we get garage issuers now. I just don't want you getting shot. >> Yeah. So, >> he's going to the door and yell and be foolish. >> I don't want to order him out till we get another person. >> Hey, sir. >> Hey, you want to shoot? >> No, it's a sheriff's office. Why don't you come out with your hands empty and talk to us? >> Just >> Okay. Well, that's different. Do you want to just keep an eye on that and I'll talk to these guys? >> Yeah, sure. >> Well, he just asked me to kiss his. Maybe it was Deputy Thompson. I don't know. >> Well, the the slug from the shotgun is back. >> Slug the plug. >> Okay. >> So, I mean, that's when I saw the pluging land in our backyard. >> Why don't you come out and talk to me with your hands emptyer? Get the out of here. Tell these people to put the goddamn smoke down. Take a ride on the wild side. and hit it. >> With Joel growing more resisted by the second and his threats intensifying, the officers had no clue what kind of danger they were truly up against. Officer Ryan cautiously attempted to keep Joel [music] talking, trying to gather any information from the nearby residents about his past behavior. Meanwhile, Officer Jason kept a watchful eye on Joel's house, sensing something wasn't right. But what neither of them realized was that Joel had no intention of letting things cool down. Instead, [music] he was gearing up to take this encounter to a level of chaos they could have never anticipated. >> But if he's shooting it up in the air, it's raining a house over on the kids. Do we have a a reckless endangerment issue? >> This isn't the first time. And he told us if we call the cops, he was going to kill us. And the first time >> he said that today >> today he said, "Call the cops and I'll you >> and we said fine, we'll go get our guns and we're calling the cops >> to you guys." Today he yelled that to you. just when this happened cuz we told him to stop shooting. We have kids outside told us to go ourselves. >> You can put some notes in CAD. Our subject appears to be intoxicated by interaction verbal and physical. He's armed with a shotgun. He's aware law enforcement is here and doesn't care. >> I said, "Fine, we're calling the cops." And he said, "Do it on." >> And you saw him armed with a gun? >> Yeah, he shot. >> Do you believe he would possibly engage and shoot you guys? This all be an audio and video recorded. Everyone understand that? reason >> okay >> went back in the house >> and proceeded to egg me on and yell absinities at me through the window >> and I informed him that I'm a veteran he wants to around I was in Afghanistan I don't care come outside >> right >> now I I'll dump right here >> you threatened me this household and our family >> I defend all terrorists foreign and domestic I don't care >> Mhm. So >> that is a >> and that's why you and that's why you went and armed yourself. >> Hey, >> drop the gun. >> Cut your face. >> Drop the gun. >> We're going to deal with it. >> The cavalry is coming. We're going to deal with him. >> Whatever that looks like. He's not going to be allowed to shoot guns and and >> right. So we're going to take care of it. >> I I feel you. I know what you're saying. >> Okay. I We're going to We're going to deal with this. Ready, one, go. >> Sheriff's office, drop the gun. >> Shots fired. Shots fired. >> Okay. >> 74 walking. >> All hell broke loose when Joel suddenly unleashed a barrage of gunfire at the officers. The ambush was swift and devastating with both officers taking hits from Joel's relentless attack. Chaos erupted as the neighborhood, unwilling to stand by helplessly, decided to take matters into their own hands. Residents sprang into action, firing back at Joel in a desperate bid to protect the injured [music] officers. Amid the chaos, the neighbors tended to the fallen officers, applying pressure to their wounds and frantically calling for backup, hoping reinforcements would arrive before it was too late. >> Keep driving. Keep driving. YOU CALL MEDICS. THEY'RE COMING. BEN, shots fired. >> At the front door. >> Hey, get back. >> Oh, Jesus. >> I'm all right. Really? >> Not all right, but >> Jay, we got we got HIT THE JAY AND I ARE out of here. >> Tell Hey, go to my van. In the back of the van is med kit. Big red bag, black backpack. Please grab it. >> I don't have a whole lot. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. I need a but we need replacements. >> Yes. >> In the head. >> We're both head. >> In the head. FOLLOW THE OFFICER. >> IN THE HEAD. >> Copy that. >> I'm losing vision in my left eye. >> Okay. >> Let's police sit down. >> I got you cover, ma'am. >> Yeah. I'm just trying to bleed here. Dad was a slug cuz I wouldn't be here. >> No, it wasn't a slug. We got BB's. >> I got sterile band. >> How many you want? >> Jay, stay armed up. >> That light blew out. >> You need to back over here. >> He's shot me out the front door. Hey guys, >> mine's right here. >> Seated on the deck. >> Can you Can you drive, B? >> Yeah, I can drive. >> With reinforcements quickly arriving, Officer Ryan and Officer Jason, both wounded but determined, made the difficult decision to leave the scene and seek urgent medical treatment. As they sped away, tactical units stormed in, preparing to take control of the escalating crisis. However, what they didn't anticipate was Joel's complete disregard for the gravity of the situation, seemingly unaware of the storm he had unleashed, forcing the tactical teams to brace themselves for an unpredictable standoff. >> You good? I'm coming. >> Hey, what's your name up there? >> Get in. Boom. Get in. Back seat. Get in. >> 72 and I are self-extricating to aid. You can let him know with the fire hall that we're coming in with the gunshot. You >> okay? >> We're both shot. >> We are the ones that are shot. Don't go any further down. >> That's good advice. We got two victims. Both with bug shot to the forehead. Both with >> We can all ride in one ambulance. Yeah, we're going to We only have one here. Okay. >> So, who shot you? >> Guy. The guy at the house. >> What's his name? >> 3031. >> Yeah. I'm just going to load you guys up. Okay. >> Okay. >> Put your rifle down. I want to load you up and go. Okay. >> With white trim. We got a bunch of civilians helping us. >> All right. I'll take a look at the map. How far up are we from here? >> Be safe. We think the guy's still in the house just in case. >> Gotcha. Times two, right? Where' James go? >> I got that. James. >> Hey, triplet. We're going to take two and go around King Valley that way. What's that? >> We're going to take him and I are going to go up King Valley and go around east. >> I want you to stay further out for peratt's going to take all the tight stuff. >> Yeah, that makes sense. >> Uh if there's a way when we get back there, if you can if there's a way to make contact with Haystack, I want to get this moved because we're going to have a big piece of armor coming in. >> Okay. >> Austin, what do you need from me? Um, I don't know. I think I just go anywhere and jump bear tank on your side where we see the fat door. >> Okay. >> Um, >> I think they're pretty well empty. So, I don't think there's very many people in there yet. So, whatever you need. >> Okay. >> Uh, and shotgun >> there. We don't know. This what he was fired originally, I guess, but we don't know what they got. >> That's what the cats say. >> And nobody has eyes on the guy, so we don't know if he's in there or not. Assuming he is. >> Okay. >> But they have pretty good perimeter in the south southeast. >> We have a description clothing. >> Oh, they have nothing. Nothing. In an unexpected turn of events, Joel casually stepped out of his residence, completely oblivious to the chaos that he had stirred. His demeanor, shockingly unfazed, sent ripples of tension throughout the officers who were now on high alert. As he made his presence known, it became clear Joel had no comprehension of the severity of what was unfolding before him. >> Door's opening. Door's open. >> DOOR OPEN. SHOW ME YOUR HANDS. HANDS UP.
