From the horrifying moment a welfare check led officers to a body frozen in a deep freezer. Yeah, >> there's a body in here. Dude, >> I swear to God. >> I swear to God, >> I know the smell. >> Officers finding out that a missing man was dismembered by his roommate. >> He was going to be doing some camping and stuff and he just wants to get away for a while. So, yeah, >> that's super weird. You told me he was going to be home today. He's trying to bag in the bathtub upstairs with bloody I'm not sure. >> Did you find your family member? >> Yeah. >> Here are terrifying moments when [music] routine welfare checks become cop's worst nightmares. >> Starting with a welfare check on Casey, an extremely intoxicated woman who, for reasons known only to her, seemed determined to turn a routine police call into an unforgettable encounter. Casey, >> shut the up. >> Hey, >> don't even come. >> Shut up. >> Okay, don't don't. >> That is their >> fine. We don't. >> On November the 6th, 2023 in Appleton, Wisconsin. Officers were dispatched to a local resource center to conduct a welfare check on a highly intoxicated woman, later identified as Casey. At first glance, it seemed like a fairly routine call, just another attempt to make sure someone in a vulnerable state was safe. But what the officers didn't know was that they were about to walk into an encounter so bizarre and unpredictable that it would become one that they wouldn't soon forget. >> She just got out of jail this morning. >> Oh, she's trash. >> What was she in jail for? Somebody's here. >> Oh, hi. >> Hello. >> Hey, come on in. >> So, Casey's having a little bit of a rough time. Okay. >> Let me You want to tell them what's going on? Go ahead. >> Yes. >> Here, I'll close the door. >> Stop. >> All right. >> Let me speak for my handset. >> Okay. Go ahead. >> Why are you here? >> Well, they called cuz I I don't know if they were concerned about you or due to the fact you were drinking. I'm not sure >> why why I'm [laughter] Why are we called about your >> You asked me [snorts] to call him for a welfare check. I'm concerned about you. >> Go on. >> I thought you wanted to tell him what what's going on with you. >> Up up up update [music] officer womb about what's going on. >> Tired. >> Okay. >> Go on. Cuz you know they're going to arrest me and >> maybe they'll take you maybe they'll take you to the hospital instead. You man, let's tell the officer what you want to do. >> Hold on, Casey. Let me explain this to you. >> No, >> I don't want to arrest you for something. [music] Okay. If I can help you out in a different way, I'd rather help you out that way. >> Can I help you outside? >> Sure. >> Great. >> You if you want, you can talk right outside here. >> Yeah, we can talk outside. We can't hear. >> I wouldn't go outside where everybody else is at. Case, >> let's just sit right here. I want >> Please, we can't hear. I'm sorry. I'm not sure. Okay, you're fine. Here, I'll shut the door so he can't hear us. Okay, >> there you go. >> No, >> what's going on? >> This is aing joke. >> Okay. Why? >> He gave me vodka. >> Okay. Why' he do that? >> I don't know. >> Okay. My understanding. >> It's fine. >> My understanding is you're not supposed to be drinking. Yep. >> Yep. >> What are you on bond for? >> Drinking. >> Okay. >> Call my PO. >> Oh, you have POS. Okay. >> Arrest him now. >> For what? >> Do you realize what happened to me? >> I I don't. >> Okay. It doesn't matter. Casey gets stabbed by some junkie that you guys I'm fine. I'm I'm fine. >> Casey, I explained that to you. I I don't want to speak to you. >> You do. Why are you talking to me? Why aren't you talking him? cuz it sounds like you called us and wanted to talk to >> I did not >> ask him. >> I'm so tired this I wanted to see my >> Okay, >> let me talk to him real quick. Okay, >> I'm so >> Just hang out right here for me. >> What's besides the fact that she's What else is going on? >> She's listen maybe talk you through this. No, a couple. I'm going to go back to jail anyways. >> Oh, okay. So, I think she feels like she's going to go to jail. You know, she's out on the street tonight. I think her Tommy, who is her boyfriend, her ex-boyfriend or whatever he is, Dory, has uh got all money and it's just >> Okay. >> So, I I would like to see if she can go to a hospital if she's willing to do it, you know. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. I'm assuming there's no spot for her tonight shelter, >> unfortunately. >> Okay. I'm going to go talk to her quick. Although I guess if she's not going to end up going to jail, I essentially left it up to her PO. She's on papers to figure out what they want to do. We'll see. >> Yeah, we'll see. >> Who's your PO? >> I don't give a case. >> You're not because you leave him over me. Rebecca, >> I don't give a [ __ ] >> Okay, just just >> I'm going to run outside this office because you're believing. Casey, hold on. Hold on. Just let me explain this to you quick. Okay. All the he people. >> Apparently, Casey had far more than a little too much to drink and was operating in a world entirely of her own making. Even so, the officer remained patient, doing everything he could to help her through the situation. But for someone seemingly committed to staying intoxicated and combative, accepting that help was proving to be a lot harder than anyone could have imagined. [laughter] >> You [snorts] Casey, >> shut the up. >> Don't even call me. >> Shut the up. >> Okay, I just want to have a conversation with you, okay? Can you have a conversation with me? >> Let me go. I have no reason to be detained. I have no reason to be detained. [snorts] Let me go. >> Where would you go? >> I don't care. What the is that your business? >> Listen, I I got to make sure you're safe and okay. >> Fine. I'm self. I'm safe. And you know what? You have no business retaining me from business. Oh god. because [ __ ] wife and you you don't give a fine. Let me go. Let me go. >> Okay. See, it sounds like you're >> I don't give a what you think. It's fine. Let me go. I'll go home. I'll go home. And I won't go. Girl, I will go. >> Can Can we just walk home? >> Shut the up. >> I'm asking you a question. Can we walk home? >> No. No. >> Okay. >> No. Come. >> How do you deal with your PO? >> Witness. Holy. >> Casey. >> What? >> Real quick. >> Shut. Do >> you know where you're at right now? >> Shut the up. >> I I have to ask you this. >> Shut the up. >> So, you're not willing to answer that? >> Shut the up. >> Okay. Do you know what it is? >> Okay. Goodbye. Shut up. I'm fine. Want to call Tommy at 427 y'all. Well, Casey, I'm a little bit worried about you. So far, we haven't been able to have a conversation. >> I'm fine. >> You keep saying you're fine. >> I'm fine. You want to rest? Tell me what I for >> you. >> Okay, >> let me go. >> Casey, did you use any >> Oh, w today. >> Shut the up. >> Just asking. >> Oh, you you dumb. >> No, find out. You dumb ass mom you [snorts] vine. You want a vine? Tell me [laughter] who's supplying dopes of you. Don't give a [laughter] fine. I'm I'm fine. >> What' you do? >> Leave me alone. >> What' you take today? >> Leave me alone. >> Casey, what you what you say? >> Leave me alone. Ask him. Ask him what he's asking me. Huh? >> I'm fine. Ask me. Can't do it. >> Please not. I will deny everything anything against him. Go home. Go to your I'm fine. >> Well, as far as it goes. >> Shut the up. >> I need you to walk with me to my car. Okay. >> Okay. Bye. >> Can you walk? >> Can I help you? >> I can walk you anywhere. Okay. Well, right now we at least have to make contact with your probation agent. >> Okay. Goodbye. >> What I'm asking for is your compliance with this. Okay. >> And you know what? >> I don't want to have to make this into I don't give a you don't give a except for the fact that I'll you will not turn either. Just me over and you >> can you get off the heating? Nope. Leave me a >> Don't touch. Do not touch me. Don't touch me. >> I'm asking you. Don't Don't >> you >> that is their >> And then just when it seemed like the officers had a handle on the situation, everything took another unexpected turn. What started as a routine welfare check on an intoxicated woman suddenly spiraled into something far more unpredictable. A nightmare scenario the officers had never anticipated when they first answered the call. >> Don't me. [screaming] >> Just relax. >> JUST PUT YOUR HAND BEHIND your back. >> You [screaming] will never betray Tommy. I will never >> you. Why are you doing this? [laughter] >> Casey, come on. >> We're not doing this. >> Come on. Give me your hand. >> No. >> Yep. >> Can you see? Come on. >> You are a You are a bullet. A way you have fallen. Oh boy. There you are. You are supposed to be >> Let me go. Let me go. >> Let me go. Let me go. Okay. Let me go. I don't give a Let me go. Try to play me. Let me go as a what Tommy taught me. >> Hey, >> and they're still messing what >> I just wanted to take. >> Don't touch me. I just want you to relax. >> Do not tell me. >> Okay. >> Do not tell me. Take it off, man. Take your off for a second. >> Oh my god. No. What? Take your dog. >> Just take your off. >> You're not going to dance on me. >> Listen. >> Take off. >> Casey. >> I would like to sit you up, but I can't do that because you keep yelling. Tell me later. >> Officer, [laughter] please. >> You need to relax on me. Officer, please. >> Casey, >> like to sit you up so you could breathe a little better. Okay. But you need to relax [screaming] on me. It's fine. But he's taking against my will. He is fine. Fine. Dumb ass. You know what? You want to [laughter] >> Okay, ready? I'm going to roll you on your side here. >> No, no, no, no. >> I want you to sit up so you're more comfortable. >> I'm good. I'm good. >> Are you going to walk with me or not? >> No. >> Why? >> What? I got to fight. >> Yep. >> Did you say you're going to fight? >> Yep. >> Why can't we just do this? >> What? >> And we could have helped you. >> Tommy told me. But you made poor decisions today so far. >> When we get outside, are you willing to PBT for me? >> You going to be cooperative or you going to be uncooperative? >> I'm cooperative. >> You are cooperative or you're not? >> Not. >> What can I do to get you to be cooperative with me today? >> Arrest me. >> I would love to. Why would I arrest him, though? >> Oh god. >> How's it going? >> Fantastic. All right. Ready? My partner and I going to sit you up. Okay. Ready? We're not doing that. 1 2 3. Let's go. Come on. Is there a better way to leave other than >> Leave me alone >> to go through everything? >> Leave me alone. What? >> Casey, just stand up for me. >> No. No. >> You arrest me. [laughter] >> What you in custody for? right here. >> Right now, we're going to explore a PE and just go to the combat. >> We're trying to help you out. >> This stop. >> Okay, let's put your or we'll collect them later. >> What's the best way to go? >> Intoxicated or not, Casey seemed determined to do one thing and one thing only. Make the encounter as difficult as humanly possible. Every attempt to help her was met with resistance. Every effort to calm things down seemed to make matters worse. [screaming] >> That's fine. Please calm down. [screaming] >> You're just going to hurt yourself. >> Don't do it. Stop. Stop. Don't do it. Don't do it. Let me down. Let me down. Let me down. Let me down. Let me down. Let me down. Why? >> I will. No. >> Could you ever do what? Hey, you wait. I hate you. You >> all right? I will. Hey, wait. Let me out. >> You let me out. Let me out. Hey, >> he's coming here. Oh, that's my homie. Can you pull my pants out? My pants are falling off. >> Your pants? >> Yeah. >> Be nice with us. >> It's not going to change anything. >> You are. He's not. >> Okay. Well, I'll be nice to you. That's no problem. >> Get me. >> So, Casey, we're just waiting for a squad car to pull up. Then we'll set you down in there. Okay. >> I told you I was more than willing to. And then you started kicking the fridge. >> You go >> that mini fridge in there. She started kicking it. >> Oh my god. What are you kicking a mini fridge for? >> You let me out. But I won't let you out. I'll hear about what happened. >> Can I go to my friend's truck, please? >> That truck right there? >> Yes. >> Who's your friend? >> His name's Angel. >> Angel? >> Yeah. Can you ask him? >> Well, we're going to sit you in a squad car here in a minute. Okay. >> No. No. No. No. No. >> Where do you want to go? >> I want to go here. >> Well, we're just going to stand right here so my partner can see us. >> Let me go. >> No. >> I'm not doing anything wrong. >> All right. Stay right here. >> No. No. >> There's no one in the truck. Let me go. Cut me loose. >> We're past that. >> It's all right. I'll bond out. >> I don't think your probation agent's going to let you bond out. >> I will. I can pay out. >> Do you got money to bond out? >> Yep. >> How much money you got? >> My kid will bond me out. >> Your kids will b out with my money. >> With your money. Okay. >> Hey. Hey. >> Jeez, his park jobs are getting more ridiculous as the days go on. >> [clears throat] >> Can you grab me? Can you grab me [laughter] yours? Otherwise, Baron is here. >> No. We can put [clears throat] >> Oh, Baron is here. We'll put her in Baron's. >> All right. We're going to walk to this one. Okay. >> No. >> All right. You got anything on you, can't see? >> Let go of me. Let go of me. Let go. Fine. >> I don't care >> if you got gloves. She's got just a few like pennies. >> Can you go through this? >> I got all the on me. >> You got anything in your bra, Casey? >> Yep. >> What do you got? >> Don't touch me. >> What do you got in your bra? >> Doesn't matter. >> What is it? >> Doesn't matter. >> Just do it at the gym. >> All right, pal. >> You got what? >> Stop. Let's put her in. >> Let's just go. >> All right. >> Not yet. We'll see. >> Have a seat. >> Let's test cooperation. I'll go to the other side. >> Can you scoot in? [laughter] >> The one. >> Can you scoot in, Casey? >> Nope. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. >> Scoot in. >> You [screaming] go, Casey. >> Nope. You >> just need to relax. >> What? >> You don't care about tell me what >> you don't care. >> Okay. >> Okay, pal. Yeah. >> There you go. Can you push your head in there so I don't have to close the door on your head? >> I'm good. >> No. >> You know what? I I can, but >> I can't. >> Can you just I need your head to go the other way. >> Head the other way, please. >> I just see you resisting the home. >> Yeah. >> In the end, she was charged with resisting or obstructing an officer, bail jumping, and disorderly conduct. And after everything was said and done, the court handed down a sentence of 30 days in jail. Taking things up a notch, here's the chilling case where a routine welfare check uncovered something straight out of a horror movie. What began as a simple attempt to make sure something was okay quickly turned into a nightmare when officers stumbled upon someone's remains hidden inside a freezer. >> I smell something bad. >> Oh, mother racing right now. >> Mine, too. There's a person in here. Go get him in a handcuff. On November the 6th, 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada, officers were dispatched to a residence to conduct a welfare check on 68-year-old Monnique Gilbertson [music] after concerns were raised that no one had seen or heard from her in more than 2 weeks. Upon arrival, officers spent several tense minutes knocking on doors and attempting to make contact, [music] but were met with nothing but silence. With every unanswered knock, concern grew. What they didn't know was that beyond those walls lay a horrifying discovery. I locked it. >> What? Oh my gosh. >> God damn. >> Jesus. >> I'm so sorry. Um I was like I just got a shower. >> How are you? Um >> yeah, I'm going on >> I'm I'm I rent this place. And uh >> What's your name? >> My name is Jasine. I I you know >> Where's Monique at? >> Mon'nique is she like I'm I'm house sitting right now. She left town for a while. >> Where is she? No. No, she didn't. Where is she? >> No, she really did. I swear. >> Okay. Where is she? I mean, her car's here. >> I know her car's here. She has me housesitting. I have like, you know, I got my rent. You're not supposed to be here. Come outside. Come outside. >> She doesn't have anyone here. >> No, I have I have rent receipts right here, actually. >> Come outside. >> Well, I'm not going to come outside right now. I have like I have I have I have paperwork that I'm supposed to be here. [gasps] Like, you know what I mean? And like, >> yeah, you need to come outside and show us our paperwork. >> Okay. I have paperwork right here, and I'm not going to come outside right now, though. Like, I have like I have legal rights. Standing in the doorway was 37year-old Danielle Roo, whose behavior immediately raised red flags for the officers. He appeared nervous, evasive, and oddly detached from the concern that had brought police to the residents in the first place. But whatever Danielle was trying to hide or whatever explanation he was preparing to give, the officers were determined to get to the bottom of it. >> What's your name? >> My name is Jasine. I I was >> Yeah, Jazz. I was >> understand that I'm here to do a welfare check on the occupant of this uh resident. I am going to do that. You need to come out of that. Well, >> she's not here right now. >> You need to step outside right now. I am giving you a legal and lawful command. If you do not obey that command, I'm going to take you to jail and I'm going to charge you with step out of that door. No, excuse me. I have rights. I I I can I call my attorney then. Like I I have I first off, Mon'nique's like not here right now. I have the paperwork right here for her. >> How do you contact Mo'Nique? >> I call her usually on her cell phone, but she called me yesterday from her um from her like friend's cell phone because she said her cell phone got lost. So she had probably put a pause on her cell phone. You know what I mean? But yeah, I usually call she us on her cell phone. I talked to her in a couple days. I'm watching the dogs right now and watching the birds. >> Okay. So from the front office when she doesn't go anywhere without her dogs. >> Yeah, I know. I've been saying that's what she had. She had like she had an emergency. She had to go to her brother in the east coast. So you know what I mean? Like she she's not here right now. What do you want me to do about it? >> Okay. >> Do you have a phone number we can contact her on? >> I mean like I usually call on her on her 505. >> Okay. But what what number did you get a phone call for? Uh um uh I have to look at like look at my um >> I already called that number that you call her on. >> Okay. Well, I mean I I don't call her. She calls me generally every couple days, but like I've been I mean I've been here since September. >> Okay, that's great. Come outside. >> You mean Huh? >> Come outside. >> Well, I'm Well, no. You guys I don't really trust the situation right now, you know. >> You need to step outside right now. >> Well, what have I done wrong? >> Okay. I am here to check the welfare because we have concern for the safety of the lady who lives here. >> That is not you. You need to step out so I can check the welfare. in this house. >> Okay. >> Step out right now. >> I'm a resident here though. >> It doesn't matter. Step out. Is there anybody else inside with you? >> Um yeah. Like uh my u my wife is here as well. >> Okay. You and her need to step out. >> Okay. Like what are we doing wrong? We have we have >> We're not doing anything wrong other than you are not obeying lawful commands from police officers to step outside. >> Listen, we're just trying to get in touch with Mo'Nique cuz we're came here to check her safety cuz no one's heard from her. Front office knows nothing about anyone staying here that's not her. I mean, it's September. They She saw I'm pretty sure she sold the front office. >> No, she didn't. We just talked to the front office. Front office contacts her, they said, like three times a day and she's always in contact with the front office. [sighs] She never mentioned anyone else being here. Okay. We've been trying to get in touch with her. Her car's here. No one's heard from her. She doesn't answer the phone. >> I mean, it's it's un like it was it wasn't like a normal thing for her. She just kind of took off and she that's why she has me house. I just started renting from her a couple months ago. Um, you know what I mean? And then like she just it was unexpected. She just said she she got to go like to see her brother and like take care of some paperwork and stuff over there and that was pretty much it. >> Where's her brother live? >> Uh like um the east coast. >> Yeah. Where? >> Okay. >> Um I'm not sure exactly. I mean, you know, I've known her for a few months, but I I don't know her like like really good, you know. >> So you have no Yeah, you you have no way of contacting her. >> I mean I I used her cell phone number. Like I said, her phone's on pause right now. >> I already Yeah, I already have her cell phone. >> You have her cell phone? What number? >> Cell phone number. >> Okay, cool. >> What number did she call you on yesterday? >> I I would have to look through my phone. >> Tell your wife. Call your wife. Be like, "Hey, come out. Come out right now. You guys step outside and then I'm going to have a couple officers come inside to clear it." Okay. Call her from right there. >> But how come we have to stay outside? >> Call her out. >> Call her out from right there. >> Okay. Well, give me one second. >> Call her out. >> Hey, give me a second, please. >> Hey, babe. >> She was in the shower last time I checked. Can I go check on her real quick? >> Call her out. While he scrambled to buy himself time and figure out a way out of the situation, the officers became even more determined to uncover whatever it was he was so desperately trying to keep hidden. And with each passing minute, they were inching closer to a discovery far more disturbing than they could have imagined. >> I just tried to call her. She >> No, you didn't. You barely You barely said anything. >> So, I'm going to have you guys step out and have you guys wait out front while we clear the residence and make sure no one stay inside. We rent here. >> Huh? >> We rent here. So, we want to make sure we can like stay inside the residence. I mean, like >> we're not going to lock you out. No, that that's not our goal here. Once again, our only goal is to make sure Monique's Mon'nique's okay. >> That's fine. Can I can I can Can I officer can come with me or do a walk through? >> Huh? No, I'm not going to have you walk with me. >> You know, I don't have to walk with you. You're more than welcome to I don't want to leave the residence cuz your your one officer made me nervous. >> Okay. That's that that's not our intention here. Okay. Our intention is to conduct an investigation to find Mon'nique. So, if you and your girlfriend could step out front, maybe provide my partner with the information. I don't know if I can for sure reach her right now cuz I wasn't able to reach her yesterday. >> Okay. But at least provide us with a phone number to reach her on so so we can at least talk to a family member down there or something that to to confirm her whereabouts. >> I mean, that's something I I can't promise you're going to be able to do that. I can't get a hold of her. >> You're trying to think we're going to jam you up here. >> That is not our intention. Our only intention is to confirm her whereabouts. If we cannot confirm them and I confirm that she's not here, I'll leave you guys alone. But can you guys please step outside so I can go through the residence and make sure she's not here? >> Like you know the only thing is like I don't give legal rights for you guys to be able to start like search anything on the property except for what >> we're not listen to what I say. We're here to make sure she's okay. Yeah. Get get your dogs and secure them and bring them outside. >> Do you have >> I don't know if she has a kind of neck collars but I don't know. They don't run. Don't think I'm sure. >> They're in a room. >> No, they're in the cage. >> Cage. [laughter] Okay. >> Okay. Good. >> Hello. >> Go a minute. With Daniel and his wife finally coming out from the doorway, the officers made their way inside to search the residence with no idea of the gravity of what they were about to walk into or what horrifying discovery awaited them inside. >> Okay. >> Are you Does that go through the kitchen side? >> No. >> No. Uh, it's blocked off. >> Okay. >> All right. Um, I got like 9 weeks just peeing everywhere. Watch out. >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, it opens up here to the right. Clear this right hallway. There's a there's another door right here. E, >> this place is just gross, dude. [snorts] >> Yeah, I'm concerned for where uh control John 6. We're still clearing the inside. There's a ton of trash in here. Is is that a door or does this slide over? >> Yeah, it does. Here, slide that over and see the other side. Jesus, I don't smell anything. The officer searched the entire house but found no sign of Manique. For a moment, Danielle's story seemed to check out. Still, something felt off, and they couldn't shake the feeling that they were missing something. >> Is that blood? >> No, I think that's what this freezer. Where's it locked at? It's right here, I think. >> Yeah, it's got a key on it. Is it a Allen? >> It's like an Allen key. >> Yeah, there's a body in here, dude. >> I swear to God there. Is this thing even on? >> Yeah, it's on. It's running. At that moment, getting the freezer open became the officer's top priority. Even as their suspicions grew stronger, they clung to a sliver of hope, hoping their instincts were wrong and praying that what they feared was inside wasn't actually waiting for them. He's freaking out saying we can't open it. >> H >> he's freaking out saying we can't open it. >> Of course he is. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. You covered it back. I swear to God >> I can smell >> I know the smell. >> What's that? >> I can tell. I smell something bad. >> [clears throat] >> Oh, [snorts] >> I swear to God, bro. My heart's racing right now. >> Mine, too. >> Bro, I don't want to see it. Just give me a second still. Yeah, there's a person in here. Go get him a handcuff. >> When the freezer was finally opened, the officer's worst fears were confirmed. Inside was 68-year-old Mon'nique Gilbertson. Danielle and his wife, Gina Lopez, were immediately taken into custody. At first, Danielle claimed that he had found Mo'Nique unconscious and in a panic placed her in the freezer because he didn't know what else to do. But as the investigation continued, the horrifying truth emerged. Manique had allowed Danielle to live in her home in exchange for help around the house. But tensions grew after she accused him and Gina of stealing and ordered them to leave. Rather than move out, Danielle allegedly injected her with a fatal dose of fentinel in a scheme to take over her home. In the end, Danielle was charged with elderly and multiple offenses, while Gina was charged with residential burglary and possession. Up next is the moment when what should have been a simple welfare check on a man sleeping along the roadside suddenly turned into a life-threatening ordeal. >> Get the out of here. Get out of here. This is the fifth time I've had you guys here in the last two hours. Get out of here. >> Can't be right. You can't be right next to the road. >> Get down there. DOWN. On May the 7th, 2025 in Wisconsin, officers received multiple calls about a man later identified as 47year-old Christopher who was reportedly sleeping near a sidewalk with his belongings scattered around him. At first, it appeared to be a routine welfare check on someone who might be in need of assistance. But when officers arrived and made contact, it quickly became clear that he had other agendas. >> What's going on? >> What the [ __ ] >> What? >> I'm voting you guys for harassment. Get the away from me. >> Can we at least move your property so it's on the grass >> on my property? They can be right there. It's right off state property. >> It's in the roadway. It's on the road. >> It is. >> We're just going to keep getting calls on you, Chris. If we don't move it, go back in your car. Do something. >> The uh I guess if they keep getting calls, then you have to do something. But not going to push an issue with him and have a full on fight and taser appointment. >> They said he really been out with him a few times today. >> I haven't heard anything. >> All right, whatever. I'm sure we're just going to keep getting calls, but >> just tell dispatch that he's unwilling to move his bike out of the road and unsheltered. >> Chris, get yourself out of the road. That's all we're asking. >> The deputies allowed him to have his way, at least for the moment. But as additional 911 calls continued pouring in, it became clear that the situation wasn't going to resolve itself. Roughly 30 minutes later, they decided to re-engage and make contact again. This time, however, things were going to be very different. >> Sheriff's office. >> Dumb mother. >> You need to leave the area. >> Stupid [ __ ] >> You do. You're in the You're in the safety area of a roadway. You can't be right on roadways. >> You How about that? And you >> Hey, Chris. >> Get the away from me right now. You stupid mother right now. Okay, you're under arrest. Stay on the ground. >> [ __ ] >> You're under arrest. Okay, I'm under arrest. >> You going to cooperate? >> You're ashole. >> You're under arrest. >> Why do you kick me like that when I'm on the ground? Why do you kick me? >> Are you injured at all, Chris? >> Yes, I am. My ribs hurt and my hand hurts from when you shot me. You couldn't hit me. >> I was doing nothing wrong. This why you guys waited for all day, wasn't it? >> You don't get to pick a tire up and charge at law enforcement. >> I wasn't charging at law enforcement. The I was >> argue about that. That's why you're arrest. We did what we did and that's why you're under arrest. That's all we're explaining about it. Okay. >> Chris, do you have anything on you? >> Huh? >> Do you have anything sharp? >> I do or not? I'm already bleeding, so who gives a >> Chris? Do you have a probe anywhere in you still? You >> see this? What did you mean? >> All right, let's go take a seat in the car that tape. You're a [ __ ] stupid all day. That's why you guys just waited this. That's why you guys sheriff's office. >> We just wanted you to I don't need to move along. That's one thing you guys don't get. I'm on a state property. Stupid. >> Now take off these cuffs AND LOOSEN THEM UP. MY HAND IS PURPLE. >> I got to check his cuffs. You dumb mother. Bring the up. >> Step out then. I got to fix your cuffs. >> I've already asked you three times. >> That one's proper. >> The [ __ ] It is proper my ass. I can't even move my You got it locked so tight after you need me in the [ __ ] side and jumped on me, you [ __ ] I bet you oneon-one outside of this. You couldn't take me. I guarantee you that for doing nothing wrong, but sitting on the side of the road that's state property. I can do whatever the I want on state property. >> Go and take a seat for me. >> Man, this [ __ ] TOUGH IS [ __ ] NOT LOOSE. The it is. You're a real for sitting on the side of the [ __ ] road. That's what you're going to try to arrest me for because Lacrosse County can't do nothing. Campbell can't send you in, don't they? Two can't even hit me with a taser. Neither one of them five yards away can hit me with a That's a joke. What a couple pansies, huh? 5 foot away. >> Can't drive your car. With Chris finally secured in the back of the cruiser, the deputies took a brief sigh of relief, at least for the moment, as the welfare check was quickly spiraling into something that they did not bargain for. However, the officer began transporting Chris to the station. But the journey was anything but calm. >> Why even let you guys carry any if you can't hit me at 5t away? I'm doing nothing wrong and you guys can't you guys come shoot at me with teasers at 5t away. Two cops either one of you two can hit me poor law enforcement there. If I wasn't if I wasn't if I was coming after you, I would have came and smack you right in your mouth, [ __ ] >> Okay. Now you have a felony. Okay. Now you're under arrest for felony threats to law enforcement. >> Law enforcement. I said if I would have. >> N I would have. You >> based on all the threats you gave today. You're not being charged with felony threats to law enforcement. >> I wasn't threatening you. I said if I would have. >> And you did come at me. So >> I I did not come at you. You got to go watch your kids again, bud. Because when it shows that I didn't come after you, that's what I'm going to get you for. >> Chris, I just want you to cooperate at this point. Okay. What's done is done. 20 law enforcement officers later, then you punks come in. That's all you [ __ ] cops are is public servants. So why don't you go grab a broom and [ __ ] do something good? Why don't you go help out the community? Now you got to find somebody that's not doing nothing around sleeping. You're just a public [ __ ] servant. That's all you are. Just you off servant. Make sure you got another job on hand, too, bud. Public servant. >> Incite me, but it's not working. Okay, >> I already did. I already got you, sir. >> No, I did my job today. >> You go do your job. >> I clearly did my job. I just appreciate it if you just be cooperative from this point forward. Okay. >> You got another job on hand and you're probably going to need it. You're just jittery as a mother. Drag me out of the car right now. Don't you? You can't keep your fingers from not moving. Just tap or just [ __ ] your nerve. >> I do that. I do that normal. That's very normal for me to tap my fingers. Chris, >> he wouldn't be along with you. [ __ ] You'd probably pull over to the side and beat me, wouldn't you? That's just what you want to do. >> Chris, I'm not going to entertain you with your comments that don't make any sense. You almost hit a [ __ ] person. What the [ __ ] What? What are you doing, dumb ass? >> Sorry, I have this distraction in the back that keeps yelling. >> No, you're all I'm up in your skin is what it is. Get these cuffs off of me. That's what I want. >> No. Where the K staying on? >> Do you have any health concerns? >> Huh? Yeah, I'm hungry. >> Okay, that's not a health concern. >> Do you have any injuries anywhere? >> Yeah, I do. >> Where are they at? >> Um, one's on my freaking side where I come and he jumped on top of me and kicked me in the >> There's no reason to cuss, please. >> The other one's on my thumb where he one of them at me with the freaking taser. I ask that you don't cuss, please. >> Step one out, Chris. >> You're going to end up shooting somebody on a job one day. Probably already have. Who knows? You're a punk sitting next to you. The next law enforcement officer we got coming in. Can't stop, can't drive, can't shoot. That's for damn sure. You give me that position. Let me shoot that you want. Yeah, you can laugh and smile and do whatever. >> I'm just I just don't know why you're starting this trade game again. >> It ain't a trade game. It's the truth. But you can't do nothing but jitter your fingers. You already know Mike cuz he's a tough guy. He got a bad ass wife. He got kicked out when he was in school. >> Chris, I've dealt with you like 20 times in my career and this is the like most worst you've ever been. Uncooperative, rude, disrespectful. >> I wonder why. Because you arrested me for no [ __ ] reason, you [ __ ] punk. >> You were disrespectful from the start. >> I wonder why when I GOT HARASSED BY THE COPS ALL night and then have you two [ __ ] jerk offs come in and do something different. Hopefully he show that ass's Christmas party. You p you should take your gun. You should take your badge. You should be put out on the street because you're a jerk off for not being able to hit somebody with a taser. >> Eventually, he was charged with battery or threat to an officer, bail jumping, resisting an officer, and disorderly conduct. Still on welfare checks that turned into a cop's worst nightmares. Here's a deeply disturbing case where officers stumbled upon 24 cats frozen to death inside a freezer and a 10-year-old living in appalling conditions. Those [snorts] cats were not when she put them in there. >> In Truman, Arkansas, officers were dispatched to a residence for a welfare check on a child. But unbeknownst to them, they were walking into a house of horrors. The call concerned a 10-year-old living with 38-year-old Samantha Plattz in allegedly unsafe conditions. What officers found, however, made the phrase unsafe conditions seem like a massive understatement. Channel one. >> German police welfare check. >> Come to the door, please. You were just standing at this front door. God, >> I'm disabled. It takes me a minute to get out of bed. >> Okay, somebody was standing right here. I heard them. >> No. >> Okay. >> Cat, maybe. >> I'm Officer Davis and I work for the Trimman Police Department. Uh, we received >> a call from my daughter because she's pissed off that I won't let her go to my my youngest daughter >> to do a welfare check on a 10-year-old. >> Go to Cherokee Village with her. She's in her room. >> We'd like to see her. Please step in here with you. >> This is my bedroom. It's a mess. The rest of house is clean. >> Bod's in the back like he always is. >> He's not inside. >> This is my bedroom. >> Where? >> Huh? >> And she's in here. >> Yep. Her room is clean. >> Hello. How are you? What's your name? You doing all right? Okay, we got to have to go over here and check on you. So, you back there somewhere. >> All right. Well, >> you like your cats. Tired of cats? Yeah. Yeah, for sure. You got so many flies in here. How many guess so many flies in here? We got lots of cats. 12 cats. What? Oh, there was more. And then >> while some officers focused on ensuring the safety of the 10-year-old child, others headed outside to locate another resident of the property, a person who was no stranger to law enforcement. Bodie Williams. >> Hey, >> what are you doing? >> Who's in there with you? >> Huh? Right there was 38-year-old Bodie Williams, a convicted felon with a lengthy criminal history, along with 43-year-old Kelvin Jones and 33-year-old Doris Arnold. While the welfare check wasn't initially about them, Bod's extensive record immediately drew attention. And as officers would soon discover, trouble never seemed to be too far behind him. >> Save your life, Kim. Okay. All right. There's a lot to unpack here. Step out one at a time, please. One at a time. One at a time. Calm down. Y. >> Okay. Sorry. >> Keep your eyes on everybody's hands, please. Everybody keep your hands where they can be seen when you step out here. Okay. Come around back. Um, all three of them are searchable. One at a time. You buddy. Do your hands on the wall one at a time. And just as the officer suspected, right there was a white substance that later tested positive for previous rapid state and federal numbers. >> Okay. So, you were dispatched. I'm not taking over. Um, read everybody the Miranda. Okay. So, there's dope in there. Yeah. 100%. 100%. We all know it. Uh, who's is it? >> Just came over here. >> That's fine. If everybody would please uh pick an officer, turn around, put your hands behind your back. All right. Well, I don't know what's going on. >> Amen. >> With Bod and his companions now in custody. Officers shifted their focus back to Samantha, the very reason that they had been called to the residence in the first place. >> We also see if you can find them dogs that they talked about. Apparently, there's dogs in the shed back here. >> Buddies, you still got the dogs back there. Where's those dogs at? >> Got taken a long time ago. >> Was that when I came here last? >> Hey, Samantha. >> Hi. >> All right. So, um, they're all going to jail. >> There's a bunch of dope back there. Dope pipes, stuff like that. So, um, uh, do you use >> No, I don't use anything. >> Okay. So, we're going to search this little area in here that Bodie told you told me Bod stayed in for a minute. Um, is there anything in this house? If hear me out here, if if we were to search the whole house top to bottom, we going to find any dope inside? >> Not that I know of. Like I said, that little bag has tobacco in it. >> Yeah. >> Uh, all I know is he he gets rocks and that means he's getting kicked out of here because he's not supposed to be doing anything like that. I done told him if he ever started it again, he's done. Okay. Um, I got you. Okay. So, the another mention was made of dogs being kept in a shed back here. You know anything about that? >> There's no dogs. There hasn't been dogs for months. Do >> you have any dogs on the property? >> No. >> Okay. All right. >> There hasn't been dogs in there for almost over a year because >> uh police took them a year ago. >> Okay. All right. Like I said, we got a call and that was one of the accusations made. Right. I know it's my daughter because I told her no that her her sister couldn't go to Cherokee with her this weekend. >> Well, I did I don't think your daughter called in a welfare check on herself. >> My eldest. >> Oh, your Oh, not that daughter. You have another daughter. >> I have an eldest. >> Gotcha. Okay, I'm with you now. I was like, I don't think that's what happened, but I'm with you. Okay, I understand. Um and it may have been I honestly have no idea. I didn't get a name. Um >> Oh, I know exactly who it was cuz I had just told her no even 5 minutes before y'all knocked. >> Yeah, I got you. All right. Um, well, I mean, just kind of be available for a minute if you don't mind. Okay. >> Following the discovery of illegal substances linked to Bodie, officers turned their attention to Samantha's apartment. What began as a routine search quickly escalated into something far more disturbing. >> Oh, start back here. Work your way up. >> Chase called me back. take pictures. Get worked on. >> Yeah. >> Figures everything. Hi, Courtney. There's two coordination points up. >> Okay. Um are you hopefully you can come here where we are, right? to you. >> Um, I think it's a very good idea based off the circumstances. I don't know that this three-year-old needs to be living here. So, >> no, she's not in custody currently. um that just there were on the property and three are in custody as a result of those and then >> the officers were apparently fighting for their lives due to the overwhelming odor in the home. But right before them was something even more gruesome. >> The odor in here is so foul there's no oxygen. There's it's the house is filled with flies and the floor is caving in in some parts and There's there's just there's just junk and trash and uh cat poop and pee in every square inch. So, >> what's the address? >> Body knows what that is. >> You don't have teeth like that, do they? >> I mean, that would be the back. >> No, I'll flip the skull back around. >> That's a freaking dog, dude. >> That's a dog. >> Right before them lay the remains of a dog. A grim and disturbing discovery on its own. But as shocking as that was, the officers would soon learn that this was only the beginning. >> The dog can tell by the back back teeth. >> I don't know how many cats there are. >> Yeah. We're going to make sure they're getting taken care of. That way they don't starve or in the house or anything. Okay. freezer. >> It's so >> Some of the cats are in the freezer, so you might want to go in there and take pictures. >> Some of the what now? >> Cats are in the freezer. >> Cats are in the freezer. >> So they can get taken care of. >> I didn't. No, I'm not here. >> We don't want to get sitting here. Okay, >> that's what she said. >> Yes, they're dead. >> I'm sorry. Did I overlook that? Hope you didn't >> cuz now I'm thinking about animal cruelty. There's one there. There's one back here. >> She said there's 12. >> Shut up, dude. >> Nope. Okay, not that one. Okay, I just went in here. Oh my god. What is that? Is that what that is? That's not that thing. It's probably these. >> That's watermelon refrigerator. There's a freezer back here as well. >> I don't know. It's a fridge. >> Oh, >> you want to go get the kids? No, never mind. >> Come on. Oh my god. >> Yeah. >> Oh, to both. Blank. >> To both. Inside the freezers were 24 cats and kittens stashed in cardboard boxes alongside frozen foods. Investigators would later say that some of the cats position suggests that they might have been frozen alive. >> Do you have gloves? >> Need some more? Oh my. Those cats were not when she put them in there. There's a mama in there in a box with her group of her baby kittens. >> Um we've actually I've already had her at our residence. Um, she's temporarily with me for a little while. >> It's probably going to be a lot longer than >> um it's going to be up it's going to be up to her ultimately. If we don't deal in that, we won't even come to your house cuz we can't go to bait. >> Yeah. >> But if it's like this, then it won't happen. >> Oh, I know. >> So, if it's >> it's it's fine. >> Okay. >> Huh? 21. >> She There's probably only so far you can go. I don't know how big your heart is, but >> there's 21. >> Okay. >> She might. >> Yeah. >> I'll just tell you so you know what you might be walking up on. There's 21 cats in there and that were frozen in the freezer. >> Yeah. So, >> oh no. This is not as >> right here. Her room. >> The the kids' room. She walked me in here and said, "See, her room's clean." >> I only no traffic right down there. >> Yeah, it is. [clears throat] >> She was laying on this bed when I came in. So >> looks like you know you [clears throat] there's 21 or 21 right there and >> you're going to see them right there if you go in there. So we pulled them all out of the freezer. >> Why were they in the freezer? Um, that's a good question. >> I think they were frozen to That's what I think. So, she's she's got some pretty hefty stuff coming. We took several dozen photos. >> There's not even a >> not a full several dozen photos will be in a welldetailed report. So, >> yeah, I won't have to do that. >> Yeah, it'll be the rest of the It'll take us the rest of the day. >> No, I'm not. Oh, okay. I was saying it was Elizabeth's husband. >> Don't tell me you miss one. >> 22. >> 22. >> Yeah. Make sure. >> Make sure. >> Yeah. >> Nothing else in there. >> Even if the box says hamburgers on it, make sure it's hamburgers. >> Yeah. Cuz they use that for food. as what was going on and what had been found. The officers turned to the eldest daughter who had made the call for a welfare check for a little background story. >> What what led you to call us? >> Um so it's this has been an ongoing issue for a while, but my birthday is this Monday and she was supposed to we're going to Cherokee for the weekend. Yeah. >> Um and she was supposed to come with us and my mom doesn't celebrate holidays. Um, so she had said that she had made last minute plans for the court and couldn't come with us. Uh, and just told me that she had moved some people into the home >> um, that had just gotten out of jail. So, I didn't feel comfortable leaving her here with random people. >> Because other than Bod, I'm not sure who else is here. >> Well, Bod's probably not a good person to be around. >> I've had a few issues with Bod. Me and Bod has gotten calls out here because we fist fought. Um about a year ago I beat. >> In the end, Bodie Williams, Kelvin Jones, and Doris Arnold were each charged with possession of methamphetamine and three counts of possession of paraphernalia, while Bod faced an additional 24 [music] counts of aggravated animal cruelty. [snorts] Samantha, meanwhile, was charged with 24 counts of animal cruelty as well as endangerment. As absurd as it was for the cops that dealt with Samantha's case, it was nothing compared to the cops that went for a welfare check on 41-year-old Richard Leades only to find him dismembered in bags. >> Is that a bag in the bathtub upstairs with bloody I'm not sure. >> Did you find your family member? >> No. Okay. On May the 2nd, 2022 in Federal Way, Washington, officers were dispatched for a welfare check over 41-year-old Richard Levieres, whose family reported that they had been unable to reach him. When officers arrived at the residence, repeated knocks went unanswered, and a search around the property revealed no sign of Richard. With no immediate evidence of foul play, there was little they could do at the time. But hours later, everything changed when the department received another call. This time from Richard's family, who had arrived at the residence themselves. Uh, mother. I'm not going to win. >> Sister. >> Yeah, his sister. >> So, you going to go and see. Last I heard from him was last night. And the only reason that's concerning is cuz his roommate is currently mentally unstable and brought an unregistered [music] firearm with him a few days ago. >> Okay. >> Um, and they they had some kind of conflict over the weekend because he was trying to get him to move out. >> As concerning as the situation was, the officers had no legal grounds to force their way into the residence. Then after some time, the door finally opened. Standing there was 44year-old Nicholas Van Cleave, [music] Richard's longtime friend and former coworker. Nicholas had reportedly been struggling with serious physical and mental [music] health issues. And Richard had allowed him to stay in the home since May 2021. But as the officers spoke with him, it quickly became clear that he might hold the answers to Richard's mysterious disappearance. >> Said he was going to be doing some camping and stuff and he just wants to get away for a while. So yeah. Oh, >> that's super weird. He told me he was going to be home today. Um, he might be sleeping. You mind if I check his bedroom? >> Actually, if you want to check his bedroom, I suppose you should. You could, but >> Yeah, he might be sleeping, you know. >> Yeah. So, please um come on in. >> I was really hoping to uh get some sleep just now, but that is not what's going on. So, >> all right. We'll be out of here shortly. >> Oh, >> appreciate it, man. Yeah. This is all their family. They're just worried about them. >> Yeah. Do >> you want to come out? I'll give you the details. This is probably not a good idea. >> Well, they're just going to go check his room. It's all good. >> Yeah, that's what I was trying to >> I appreciate it. Yeah. >> No, dude. I think maybe we if we could just come outside and talk for a minute here. I would appreciate that if we could just do that. >> Do you guys happen to have a smoke on you? Cuz I haven't had a cigarette. >> I go check my car. For reasons only Nicholas could explain, he seemed determined to keep everyone out of the house, at least for the time being. Rather than answer questions directly, he tried occupying them with some [ __ ] and bull stories. At that point, it was becoming painfully obvious that Nicholas was hiding something. The harder he worked to keep everyone out of the house, the more suspicious he became. But just as he was doing everything in his power to prevent anyone from getting inside, Richard's mother pulled a fast one on him. >> Cat, too. >> Oh, yes. [music] Actually, the cat does need her medication and stuff. Are you familiar with her medication? >> Just leave right. >> Okay. Yeah, let's let's go ahead and do that real quick. Come on in. >> Just moments after entering the house, Rich's sister noticed something immediately felt wrong. >> Huh? >> His car is dead. Okay. >> No, don't. No. Don't. >> Hey, sir. What's your name? >> Uh Nicholas Dan Cleave. Yeah. Don't go in there. Uh definitely not a good idea. Uh >> don't go where? >> Nowhere. Nowhere. Uh, can we go ahead and Oh, yes. That's a Wow. Yeah, that's crazy. Hey, can >> I think >> she's up? >> No. Go up there. No, no. Uh, >> they're going to go check on on their family member. >> Oh, yeah. So, >> so we're here. Let's go get see if we can find you a cigarette. >> Yeah, let's go get a smoke. But, uh, >> the officers managed to convince Nicholas to step outside for a cigarette, giving Richard's family a rare opportunity to look around the house themselves. But while Nicholas stood outside with the officers, his behavior spoke volumes. He appeared nervous, uneasy, and increasingly anxious, making it painfully obvious that he was hiding something. And with every passing minute, the family grew closer to uncovering the horrifying truth that he had been trying so desperately to keep buried. >> I don't deserve this. >> No, I didn't say that. I just don't have one. >> No, I completely understand. Uh I I really don't think it's a good idea or uh what am I talking about? They're going to do whatever they want because [music] they're family and so Yeah. >> Oh [ __ ] >> Officer, we need you in here, please. >> Why don't you come out here and tell me why you Wait, I didn't tell you. I'm not saying nothing. >> No, I'm talking to her. >> No, but >> Lo and behold, their worst nightmare had become reality. Upstairs, Richard's family stumbled upon something that they had desperately [music] hoped that they would never find. For a brief moment, they tried convincing themselves it wasn't what it appeared to be. But deep down, they already knew. We found a bag in the bathtub upstairs with bloody I'm not sure, something. >> Okay. Did you find your family member? >> No. >> Okay. All right. Okay. You say nothing. You go this way. >> 26. >> No. No. You go. >> I might need a second. You're probably super. >> Yeah. Go. Here. Go sit down. Go sit down. They're telling me that they found uh a couple of garbage bags that are really heavy that have blood on them. >> Yeah. I don't even know what that's about. I haven't seen them. >> Another question. Uh you don't have a firearm or anything in the house, do you? >> I do. >> You do? Where is? >> Um yeah, I don't know. Insanity or something. I don't [ __ ] know. But then like please I don't I don't know anymore. Temporary insanity, I guess. >> Temporary insanity. >> Why you talking about temporary insanity? >> I don't know. >> Well, I'm just I'm asking you why you're ask why you said those things. >> I have no idea. >> You don't know why you said >> I'm not sure. >> I believe the fifth and temporary sanity. >> I don't know. I don't know. I I found him like that. And it was like that's why I was like >> he came back and you found him where >> like what? So you found him like that? What does that mean? myself and forward. >> I don't know. >> How did you find him? >> I have no idea. Just I didn't even find him, you know. He was just uh he just came back and then he's here. >> Realizing his secrets may have finally been uncovered, Nicholas grew increasingly desperate to find a way out of the mess closing in around him. >> I'm going to get a cigarette. >> Well, I I looked in my car and I didn't have any. >> Right. Yeah. No, that makes perfect sense. Uh, very very unfortunate. But it's okay. I guess I don't need to smoke anymore ever. Actually, I don't deserve to be able to smoke cigarettes. >> Why are you saying that? >> Like, why? Why don't you deserve to smoke a cigarette? >> It would be You know what? I'm going to shut the up. Richie wasn't my good friend. >> He's still my good friend. >> Why? Why do you want him down the road? >> Oh my god. Right. >> Do I have a knife? >> Yeah, you have a knife. >> Oh, this is my car knife. Oh, no. This is This is just one of those. >> For my safety, can I take that for you for a little knife? >> Yep. >> I don't You got anything in here either? >> With backup now on scene, Nicholas refused to consent to a search of the house, leaving officers with no choice but to pursue a search warrant. As they waited for it to arrive, investigators began canvasing the neighborhood, hoping someone had seen or heard something unusual. Before long, one neighbor came forward with a crucial [music] piece of information. >> I thought something was happening over there. I was just like, "Okay, whatever." >> What do you mean movement? >> Like it it sound like something was hitting the wall. >> What time was that? >> I want to say it was like >> probably midnight or like >> Yeah, it was like 11:30 midnight. >> Okay. >> Up bed like hitting the wall. >> Okay. Like I don't I don't really know >> like something for pushed or >> No, it was just like somebody was like moving on their bed was kind of what it sounds like. >> All right. >> Okay. We didn't hear any yelling or arguing, nothing like that last night that you remember. >> I was also >> I was I was pretty >> I was also like about like an hour ago. I was in the bathroom grabbing something and I heard the I heard the shower on next door and I heard a lot of talk. I don't get it. >> Okay, I can stop talking. sit here and look at each other awkwardly. >> Yeah, that's fine. Okay. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. You guys were just talking to me for some reason. I have no idea why there's someone talking to me. >> Yeah. Well, at this time because, you know, cuz the suspicion >> Well, our you know, our hope obviously is that >> everything is fine and who knows that that there is no crime really really well. >> That's our hope. But if in the event that that's not the case, we want to make sure that every any evidence that we collect, anything that we find out has was is done according to the law. Right. Yep. >> Hours later, the search warrant finally arrived. And this time, the investigation moved into a new phase. And whatever hope Nicholas had of talking his way out of the situation quickly faded away. >> Uh, you are under arrest. Just stay seated. Okay. We're going to grab your hands and put them behind your back. I'd rather just I'd rather >> I'd rather >> Come on, man. I'm trying to not Wait, I know. >> I'm going to have you talk to our detectives. >> Why we Why do we have so many people around me? >> How many people we got here right now? So, we're going to take you back to our station, have you talk to detectives? We're going to advise you of your rights real quick. Good. Okay. >> I'm I can't move. As Nicholas was placed into a cruiser and transported to the station, other officers continued searching the house and finally began piecing together what had happened to Richard. The bags in the bathroom that the family had initially discovered contained dismembered body parts of Richard. In one of the bedrooms, they discovered a chilling collection of weapons, 9mm pistol, a large kitchen knife, and a machete with blood stains visible throughout the room. In Richard's bedroom, the evidence became even more disturbing when officers found a blood soaked hatchet hidden beneath a pillow. Downstairs, bullet fragments, fresh blood in the living room, and drag marks trailed along the floor, leading straight to a utility closet in the hallway. Inside, more hidden body parts were uncovered. Eventually, Nicholas was charged in connection with [music] Richard's death. However, nearly 3 years later, a judge ruled that he was mentally incompetent to stand trial, leading to the dismissal of the charges. Instead of a criminal conviction, he was placed under civil commitment and ordered into long-term psychiatric treatment. In yet another disturbing case, here's the moment a welfare check on a woman named Carla Brown exposed the evil deeds of her neighbor Todd Kip, who had kidnapped and locked her in a container. >> People have not been seen since they were at your property. We have Caleb in your property. You're under arrest right now for kidnapping. She's on your property right now, locked in a container. On November the 3rd, 2016, [music] detectives arrived at a property after multiple missing person's reports, one of whom was Carla Brown. Every report [music] all pointed to Todd's property. What they expected to be a routine investigation was quickly going to turn into a [music] chilling encounter with a man who thought he knew exactly how to play the system. based on the fact that you were the last person to see them and there's some other information that the investigators and like I said me and him were just brought into this um to as a matter of fact I was just brought into it last night. >> Okay. >> Okay. Um but um based on some information that that Anderson Police Department received, they had contacted us through an assisting an agency report. Okay. And through that, as a standard practice, um, we follow the lines like she explained, okay? >> And they did the search warrants, okay, with the cell phones and everything. >> Okay. >> Um, and based on information, and that's what I was just talking to as my supervisor. Um, based on the information um that we received um and that he's received, >> um, we have a search warrant, >> okay, >> for your residence and your car. >> Okay. >> Okay. We are mainly looking for your cell phone. Okay. >> Well, what I need I need to go in with we me at least one other me and at least him need to go in with you. So um that we can get the phone um and um is is standard protocol. Okay. What I'll have you I got to make a phone call real quick. What I'll have you do is I'll have this investigator and this officer and this investigator going with you so that that that we can get that process started >> and then I'll be right back. Okay. >> Okay. So, you're searching my house in my car. >> He's got a copy of the search warrants. He'll give he'll show you the cop. He'll show them to you and he'll leave you a copy >> for well mainly for the search for the phone or any other electronic media devices. >> And it's outlined in the search. cuz I'm just getting my phone. >> Well, >> he'll read the search warrant. See you. Um I I'm not sure if the search warrant He read the search warrant this warning. He'll explain the search warrant to you because I think there the search warrant mentions the cell phone and any other electronic media devices. >> So it may it may not Do you have other computers in the house? >> Yeah, I've got computers for days. Uh why don't we step inside so we don't share any business out here. >> 104 Red Ribbon Drive 104 Red Ribbon Drive. Once inside Todd's house, detectives wasted no time, diving straight into the investigation, unaware of the dark surprises waiting to unfold. >> This is where we're at, so I I I I'll explain this a little more in detail to you. >> It's just scaring the hell out of me. >> No, this [laughter] I'm as straightforward as can. I don't pull punches. Um >> several of the questions that we asked you. >> Uhhuh. >> Okay. um are inconsistent with what phone records say with what phone with what information that we have. Okay. Um so that's why the search warrant's being done. Okay. Um communication wise um you know between you and Kayla um locations times of locations and things of that nature. Um, so based on that information, um, we we had the search warrants already typed up, but we did not think that we were going to we didn't know if we were going to need to use them or serve them or not. Okay. Um, but based on some of the information that we received, we we we do we are going to serve the search war on. Okay. Okay. Um, okay. And basically that's that's it in a nutshell. Okay. Okay. Um, you know, we'll try to make this as painless as possible. >> Thank you. >> Um, you know, we don't want to scare your dogs. Um, >> don't scare the other. Uh >> um you know if you want to talk I mean since we are serving the search war um you know we can step in the back and we can talk privately um you know I mean um since we are ser it's not but and I don't want you to think that we think you've done something wrong >> okay [clears throat] >> um it's just we have to these people have not been These people have not been seen since they were at your property. >> Okay. >> Okay. Um, so we, you know, you you essentially were the last person to have any contact with them. They're family, friends. No one has had any contact with them since you had contact with them. Mom, dad, cousins, uncles, best friends. >> Okay. >> Anybody? >> Nobody. >> No one. Not one, not one person, >> zero persons has had contact with them since you had contact with them at your property. Um, their phone records show that, you know, that that that they were at your property as she said before, you know. Um, so I mean I can go into more detail um, you know, but we I mean it would be something we would need to sit down and discuss if you would want to. I mean, it's up to you. Okay. [music] >> You probably [music] >> No. Um, I didn't see any of that coming at all. >> For the time being, Todd played [music] dumb, thinking with time he'd have avoided going to jail, but he was about to learn why the cops wore the badge. >> Okay. What do you need from me? And what Well, would give you the opportunity to clear up some of the inconsistencies. >> Okay. >> Okay. And what we're finding from the phone records and the information that they've received through their investigation. >> Okay. >> Okay. And what you told us today. >> Okay. Um because you know >> this has also been a couple of months but what I don't >> well I mean and that's what you know I mean you're >> I don't want you to think you're under arrest or anything. >> Okay. So don't freak out about that. You're not under arrest. >> You have three detectives and an officer in in your house. >> Well our protocol >> our protocol is anytime we serve a search warrant anytime we serve a search warrant. Okay. There has to be there has to be a senior investigator which is essentially a supervisor. >> Okay, >> that's me. >> Okay. >> Okay. We also when we serve a search warrant, we have to have a black and white present. Okay. Initially, he was on the way to respond to me because I wasn't paying attention to this. I was talking to you. >> So, um, when they called me and told me he was on the way, I said, "Go ahead. Come on. We're going to service. We're going to have to serve a search." Okay. Okay. So, um you know, so the people that are here right now other than her, but it's her missing person's case and we're assisting her. This is all protocol. Okay. >> So, the fact that there are three department county people here and there's going to be another one showing up, our forensics guy, cuz he has to photograph whatever evidence or whatever, not evidence, but whatever we take. >> Okay. He has to photograph that document. And it's it's it's as much as your protection as it is anything. Kind of like you were talking about with real estate. So I have real estate. >> Yes, sir. >> You want to document the condition it's in when we left so that when we return it, it's in the same condition. You see what I'm saying? >> Totally. >> So that's to protect you just as much as it is protect the sheriff's office. >> Okay. >> So, and that's basically it. But as far as the inconsistencies, [music] um, you know, um, you know, we we just need to I mean, we need to clear those up. We I'd be willing to give you the opportunity would like to give you the opportunity to clear them up. >> Okay? >> You know, if you if there's some place you would like to go sit down and talk, >> I can do it right here in front of all of you just to be what I do. car. That was the other part. We should have seated. >> Can I get that chair, please? >> Absolutely. >> As a matter of fact, I need to step out of my apartment real quick. >> Todd was read his Miranda rightites, confident he could outsmart the detectives with [music] a web of lies, but he was unaware that the truth was already clawing its way to the surface. The main issue that we have um we were able and she can give more information on this. This is I was briefed last night. We know that there was more of a physical relationship between you and Kayla. Okay. Um I can understand why you wouldn't want to bring that up. Okay. I can understand that. But I need you to explain a little more detail about the physical relationship because what we do have and I'm not an art. I'm I don't care about prostitution. I don't care about whatever. She's a she was a stripper. My understanding she was [snorts] very good-looking and she would call you and need money. >> Yes, sir. >> And you would give her money and she'd give you sex. They would work out that way. >> Okay. Did that happen often? >> Occasionally, not as a few times. Would she make the contact? Would she initiate the contact with you, need money, and you say, "Okay, I'll meet you." And you know, or would you make the contact with her? >> Or would it be both ways? >> It's kind of both ways. Okay. She's a pretty girl. I mean, >> I understand. >> Um, I didn't want to cause any issues with I don't want your boyfriend. >> You don't want the drama goes along with it. >> I understand. >> But, um, we had a little bit of fun together. Um, ballpark. How many times you think you guys met? Did you have one specific place you would meet? >> I mean, would you bring would she come here? We had Bill. Well, we during for the sex or for whatever would she meet here. >> We only How do I put this? Um the night after dinner. >> Mhm. >> Uh she stayed the night. >> Okay. Okay. And then the uh time when she came over here to get back >> to clean the house to >> clean the house at at >> Mhm. Um, okay. >> Were there ever any times you met at your property and had >> the other main issue is um you said that at your the day that they were at your property, what kind of car were they driving that day? What color? >> White. White. Do you know what kind it was? Was it a Was it a car or was it an SUV or was it >> It was a car. >> Okay. Um, was she driving? >> I don't. Okay. >> Um, I don't think so. Cuz she got out of the car. I don't think so. >> Sensing his evasiveness, detectives turned up the heat and that pressure would crack something wide open. The other thing is when she was on your property for more than an hour, hour and a half, okay? >> She was on your property for several several hours. Okay. Um so that's a that's conflict. Okay. >> Um you know, we we can put her we can put her on your property for most of a good portion of the afternoon going into just that before evening. and and that is a conflict with what you said. >> Okay. >> We can put you going to the property, leaving and coming back. Um and and we can put her at the property beyond that and into the evening or into just before what what is considered evening time. Um, you know, and a lot of people get confused by evening because the sun may still be up with the daylight, you know, the daylight savings time, you know. >> So, but, you know, um, why would you say that she was only there an hour, hour and a half when she was there pretty much the whole the whole afternoon? >> I Okay. I don't have an answer for you, sir. Okay. Uh, it's Did anybody else show up at the property? >> You had mentioned to them out there when I guess when I was on the phone that you felt like she was falling off the wagon again. >> Yes, ma'am. >> Do you know if she was getting her what was her choice? Do you know? >> Pills school. >> Do you know who she was getting them from? That's right. >> You never heard any names or anything like that? >> Lucky. >> Okay. Did you ever meet this Lucky or she? >> I don't know what's going on cuz she just mentioned that she has had Rose. Go see Lucky when she was in. >> Did she mention that that day by chance? >> Uh, do you recall? >> I don't remember this, sir. I just know the name. I I've never met the man. I don't know who it is. I'm not even I just I'm assuming it's a guy, but I mean it's um when she said she was in pain, she would go see him. I don't know who that is. >> Does she have access to your property [music] without you being there? Unless you [snorts] trust her enough that when you leave your property to leave her there's nothing I mean there's nothing to take for I mean it's locked it's not going anywhere trees Um, she's at the front of the front of the propert. >> I mean, >> yeah, you can steal something, but you went through a lot of effort to steal something. >> You trust your here by yourself. >> There's lots of things to steal here. It was easy to find what they needed on Carla, but Todd's web was much more complicated, and the detectives weren't stopping until every [music] missing piece was uncovered. >> This person, Charlie, that was there. Is this the first time you'd ever seen him? >> No, sir. I saw the first time was the last day they were cleaning up Vista. Where's Vista? Right on the corner. Uh 118 Vista, Twin Lakes. It's a rental occupied. >> Okay. Uh we had renters who moved out So on the right going down Vista. >> Yeah. It's a very ugly house. >> Um has no has no garage. >> Um the headers move out. >> Pick up all their junk. Um paid for her to come in. Clean the house up. uh vacuum clean the kitchen bathrooms make run to the next person uh unfortunately doesn't always work that way to be a one day job ended up being a three-day job could not explain completely started as a one day job ended up being a three-day job uh first day was some other guy showed up second day was a woman u who showed the second Okay. >> Okay. >> I didn't speak to her. She just they pulled in. Uh there was a lot of leftover. I don't have my house. A lot of leftover. >> The jungles was moved from from the down there up to the top of the hill. Had it moved. Uh there's a they took a garage, converted it into two separate um one's like a shed storage for like yard stuff. The other one was like a playroom day. I don't know what you call it. It was a stupid living room. Uh and there was a bunch of crap that left there. They had to come back and get it. Uh and then the third day came back and finished the the vacuum and then um that's when I saw that the first time. >> What kind of vehicle do you drive? I've got a 2014 BMW um X5 and I've got a BMW uh 2011 um uh a little convert 22. >> Yes, sir. >> According to the warrant, detectives were set on seizing every device Todd owned. And for good reason. >> Is that the only cell phone you have? >> No, sir. >> It doesn't work. Okay. But I Yeah, just print that back whenever. >> That doesn't work. It It only works if you >> I had >> this phone and then it decided to break um couple months. >> It will come on if you plug it in. It will not come on if you get the button. If you put a charger to it, but as soon as you un undo the charger, >> it shuts down. >> Do you have a passcode on your phone? So when you turn it on, you just swap the screen and it's up. >> I don't have time to pass code. >> Time is money. I got you, brother. >> If if I [sighs] The phones never leave leave me, >> right? >> Um phones don't leave me. I have to have it. >> And that I would imagine that that not this one, but that one is pretty much that's the number that's on your card. That's the number that's on your sign. No, no, no, no. I'm not going to do that, Joe. This was the phone. This This This >> through the same company. >> This replaced. I got you. I got you. >> Same number. I got you. >> But this is the number that's on my sign. I got you. That's what I was asking. I got you. Uh understand. >> You can have babin laws. You need it. We'll >> I just really need that one back cuz that's my company. >> Everybody all my all my numbers on the signs, my my ads, my signs, my clients, everything goes through that phone and then it gets relayed to my agents. Right. After >> he's gone through you, >> it's gone through me. >> That way basically I still get >> that's his phone. He's deaf. So he has a light that lights up in the front [laughter] room. >> Okay. But what we have is I this one replaced that one, but it's the same number. >> And I I got a couple months ago when that one fried. If you divide I said if you plug it in does work. [snorts] >> We uh >> no passcode don't need either. >> No st one of the search marks that we have is specifically for your vehicle. I don't really want to serve that one. I wanted to ask your permission just look at it and make sure there's no electronic media in that. >> There's no Can I look? Can we look? >> Sure. You want to You can show me where it's at. You can walk out there and look real quick. Would that be okay? >> What? I don't understand. What are you What are you looking for, sir? >> That there's no other phones, no other computers, anything like that. That's all. >> Okay. >> Okay. Are we searching the whole vehicle? We What are you looking for? >> Just Just looking through the vehicle to see if there's >> um any more phones or anything like that? >> I'd rather not, sir. >> Okay. Okay. Well, then we'll just start the search warrant. >> Not trying to be difficult. I just I just don't understand. >> Okay. >> We've got a search warrant. We'll just search the search war. I mean, I was just one of those things. >> Yeah. Well, give me one second. >> Yeah. >> What Todd didn't know was that the detectives had already outplayed him, uncovering the chilling [music] secret he thought that he had buried for good. >> This is just this much. >> You need an extra set. Well, yeah. Give me an extra set. We'll do two so we don't >> You're not under arrest. >> Okay. >> I'm also in handcuffs. >> Alpha 32. >> Got plenty of room. I can get my thumb in. >> Okay. >> I think I 13 is taking care of that. >> Have a seat. Let's go ahead and sit right there. Back. I got the other stuff in the car. Temple. New sweeps. I want to get y'all picture. You're not missing anything. >> All right. This is where we're at, Mr. Clip. While we were here. All right. My sergeant served a search warrant on your property. Okay. We have Kayla. >> Excuse me. >> We have Caleb in your property. She was locked in a container. Okay. She has told us that you Charlie. >> Okay. So, at this time, I'm going to need you to stand up and put your hands behind your back. He's already >> Okay. You're under arrest right now for kidnapping. >> All right. They're continue to search your property. They're going to continue. They're bring They got cadaavver dogs down there. Okay. >> Okay. If you want to help yourself, tell me where Charlie's at so we can go find his body. Okay. That's That's pretty much where we're at right now. >> Okay. >> Do you want to help yourself and tell me where the body's at so we can go recover Charlie's body? >> No, sir. >> You don't want to? >> No, sir. >> Okay. Why' you >> I didn't shoot anybody, sir. >> Okay. Why'd you lock her in a container in your property? >> I was not. >> She's on your property right now. Locked in a container. They just got her out of a like a um they called it a specific name. >> ConX box. >> ConX box. >> She was locked in a container in a ConX box. They got her. We We have investigators. We got like 20 investigators on your property right now. >> Okay. >> And they have found her in the ConX box. >> So she never left your property. Okay. >> Okay. You locked her in the ConX box and she has told investigators that you Charlie Okay. So, I'm trying to give you an opportunity to help yourself and help us help you find this body because Charlie, she's saying Charlie's body, you buried Charlie's body on that property. >> I'm not sure. >> So, you're saying you didn't lock her up? You didn't put her in the ConX box or anything? >> No, I'm going to need an attorney. >> Um, probably good thing. Go ahead and put him in the back of your car, >> sir. >> Yes, sir. I would on some kind. I'm not resisting. >> Okay. Just stand up for me. >> Will you >> stand up for me? >> Yes, sir. >> With damning evidence and a survivor's account, Todd's fate seemed sealed. >> Come on, T. [music] Tazzy. Tazzy, come here. Does she prefer that cave back there? >> She does. If you'll follow me, sir. >> Yes, sir. >> Pass. I'm going to go. >> We'll just put him in the small one. >> T, come on. >> He's working. >> T, come on. [cough and clears throat] >> I think he's got her in the little one here. One in the driveway right here, but [snorts] passenger side. >> Morning. >> Good morning, Rich. >> I'll be right back with you. >> Right here. The fit is not going to be great. So, if you want to when you get in there, if you want to put your knees and your feet that way, kind of lean back on the door, that'd be fine. Take the pressure off your hands, too. >> [clears throat] >> Come here. Come here, man. Just sit tight. Come on. Stand out here. Put these on. Give you a little more room. You're big dude. fast. Makes it a little better. >> All right. >> Again, if you want to try to slide your knees that way, that'd be all I'm going to try anyway I can get in. >> I know. Think being a Tahoe, you know, not exactly built for comfort. >> All right. >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. >> In the end, Todd was charged with kidnapping and secondderee homicide. Just when you thought that you'd seen it all, along comes the moment a welfare check on Amberly Harris led to the troubling discovery of a calculated homicide just days after her partner took out a life insurance policy in her name. >> Amberly she passed away. >> Oh, she's down. >> What? >> I got she down. >> What happened? >> I lost control. >> You what now? >> I lost control. >> What you 19 offense 30? 20 gauge >> 20 gauge. >> On December the 15th, 2022, [music] Kentucky officers responded to a 911 call from a worried co-orker reporting that her colleague Amberlye Harris had gone silent for a week. Following the strange [music] yet very disturbing report, the cops decided that it was best to conduct a welfare check. But when they arrived at her residence, [music] they had no idea that they were about to make a discovery so shocking that it would threaten any reasonable person's sanity. Edward 31 out of service. >> I don't like these windows. >> Is Amberly here? Amberly? >> She passed away. What? You did what? >> What? >> Where is she? Just put her hand watching something. >> She's in the back. >> What? >> What the officer stepped into was unimaginable. And then came Tommy's sudden confession. And to be honest, they weren't prepared for it. >> You're going to put your hand back. >> Where is she? >> I'm watching something back. >> What? INDEPENDENCE, PLEASE MAKE YOURSELF KNOWN. >> INDEPENDENCE, PLEASE MAKE YOURSELF KNOWN. >> INDEPENDENCE, turn that way. >> INDEPENDENCE, PLEASE. MAKE YOURSELF KNOWN. GO. HUH? CLAIRE, >> independence police here. Make yourself known. >> Make yourself known. >> Go. She's down. >> What? >> I got She's down. >> Make sure you're watching where you're standing and don't touch anything. >> Yes, sir. >> Oh my gosh. >> When When did you do this? [music] >> [music] >> No one else is in here. No, keep them coming. [music] >> Some fire on the ground. >> Yeah, just stay here. >> You guys good? >> Yeah, we're good. >> Hold on. Hold on. Yes. >> Still reeling from his confession, officers cuffed him and read him his rights. But the real shock was only just beginning. >> Okay, hold on. Come here. >> Where is she? >> Put your hand back. >> Watch inside. Freddy back. >> What? >> 26. Hold channel. Sorry for yet. >> Defense, please make yourself. Please make yourself that way. >> Okay, you're good. Do you have any weapons on you? Just a minute to our victim here. So, we're trying to figure out further victim. >> Okay. >> Sit in your car. >> Yeah, we'll work that out in a second, but I got to make sure my guys inside are okay. All right. Runi, you guys good? >> Yeah, we're good. >> All right, hold on. Hold on. >> I'm sorry. >> Okay, Tommy, I'm going to read you something real quick.
