But what happens when the high fades? The sirens stop and the suspects realize they've just taken a life. Something that will haunt them forever. I had to get a better >> because she passed on it. Okay. >> That has nothing to do with me and my brother. We were not We were not speeding. What do you not understand? >> You know what the speed limit is? >> Yes, it's 55. >> Here are several gripping moments when suspects realize they caused someone's demise. Starting with this eerily cold driver whose bone chilling reaction after hearing the devastating news left even the most seasoned of officers stunned. >> Ma'am, listen. If I >> two people struck your vehicles, I'm telling you, and they're both deceased on scene. >> You want me to be honest with you? You're going to jail. You don't have a bond. You two people tonight. I don't think you understand that. Did you understand what I told you killed two people tonight? >> Yes. I'm just wondering when I can go to school. >> On April the 10th, 2022, police officers responded [music] to a distress call reporting a crash. But this wasn't just any accident. Stephanie Mel Goza had turned her car into a weapon of mass recklessness, tearing through the legal limit like it didn't [music] exist and leaving immediable havoc in her wake. >> Come over here with me, man. Okay. called as soon as this should happen this doesn't happen. >> I understand. >> I go to Bradley. Like why would this happen to me? >> Okay. So, here's what I'm going to have you do. If you can uh maybe help Pyro do CPR on that one right now. >> You tell me. I'm right here. >> Okay. Just hang tight right here. Has anybody gotten all your information? >> No. No one. Um someone your friend took my license. >> Do you have a driver's license? >> Your friend took my license. >> Okay. I'm just I'm just going to write it down here just to let you know I got body cameras. Okay. The contact has information for personal scene for reconstruction. Is that okay? If I give it a >> What is your first? >> S T E P H A N I E. >> Middle initial. >> I don't have one. >> Okay. Last name? >> Mel Goza. M E L G O Z A. Phone number. >> Okay. >> Yes, sir. >> Can uh Were you leaving the bar? Were you coming this down the road? >> I was coming. I was coming here. >> You know, I had just gotten my night started. So, were you going this direction or this direction? >> I was coming this direction. >> Okay, here's what I'm going to have you do. Um, >> let's just get let's get away from the scene a little bit. Let them do their thing. Okay. This is your car, right? The correct the red car. You were the only one in the vehicle. >> I'm the only one. >> Okay. Come over here to my squad car. Okay. >> Yep. >> Can [music] you take your purse off and just set that on here? We got to >> Yep. Do you have anything illegal on you? >> Yes. I have marijuana in your >> in your purse. Okay. Have you had any marijuana tonight? >> No. >> Okay. Do you set those on the car for me for him? >> My vape, too? >> Yep. Yep. Set that down there. >> And my phone. >> In your phone? Yes, ma'am. >> All right. Just come over here. Put your hands on my car. He's got a pass search before I put you in my car. Okay. >> Okay. >> No pockets or anything. >> Okay. >> No pockets. >> All right. Until we figure out how we're going to handle this, I'm going to have you sit uncuffed in the backseat of my car. >> I'm going to get you out. We're going to probably do some field sobriety test and all that. I got some more questions for you. Right now, I'm going to have you sit down just so we're out of roadway. Okay. Right over here. >> Just scoot that over for me. Okay. >> Do you want to do it? >> There we go. >> Are you hurt at all or need or need medics yourself? >> No, sir. >> Cuz your entire I mean your car is pretty making sure. Do you Are you bleeding anywhere? >> Um, no. I'm okay. >> Was that a little blood splatter on your hands? Maybe from your glass. I see you got glass cut all over you. >> Do I? I don't. I think I'm okay. >> Okay. All right. Hang tight a minute. >> Okay. Suspect. That's her. She's They're probably going to call both of them. So, but yeah, go check out her car. >> Sorry. It's okay. >> All right. All right. So, here's the deal. Just because I I do have you in the back of the police car. I don't have you in custody or under arrest, >> but obviously you don't feel like you're free to go right now, right? So, I'm just going to read you your man rights. you understand what they are and we're going to talk about what happened on the accident. Okay? I appreciate you being cool with me. I understand this is pretty stressful. >> Soon enough, the officers cut to the chase with the real questions. But instead of remorse, they were met with a [music] reaction that missed the mark entirely. >> Okay. Do you understand your rights? How do you say your first name? >> Stephanie. >> Stephanie. Okay. That being said, will you talk to me? Explain what happened. Okay. >> Talk to you about anything. >> All right. So, explain detail [music] just what happened prior to the accident. I was coming to full throttle and I was almost here as you can see. >> Were you Were you driving this way or back coming down that side? >> Right here. This way. >> Okay. >> And suddenly one person walked out in front of me. >> Okay. >> And my car got hit. I called you as soon as they got hit. >> You called 911? >> Yes, I called 911. I was doing something happened. >> And then someone said, "Oh, someone else's hit." I'm just like, "Oh my god, how did that happen?" >> Okay. What happened when you hit the one person? What happened? >> I just called you. That's all I know. I called you. >> Did Did they fall down right away or did you get out and help them or what happened? >> I got out. I called you and then everyone else came out. So, I like kind of just let them Okay. >> Come and take over the situation. >> Okay. >> Um but I promise you like I only know one person got hit and I'm just like they came out of nowhere because I am a safe driver. >> I get it. Hang on one minute. It's going to start to rain here. Okay. units on status. >> Okay. >> Um, if you had to ask me how fast were you going when you hit the person? >> I would say I was going at least at least 40 at least. 40. Maybe 40 to 45, but at least 40. >> Okay. All right. Um, do you think you were going too fast for this area at the time with the darkness? >> I honestly don't think I was going too fast because I tried to be precautionary about where I'm at. Um, but I just know that someone one person came out of nowhere. >> Did you have your headlights on? >> Yes, sir. >> Brights on or just regular headlights? >> Regular. >> Okay. Okay. So, obviously you saw them. It was no time to react. We're trying to stop. >> No time. That's the word. >> Okay. All right. Where were you coming from tonight? >> I was coming from Tavern uh 41 on Sterling Avenue. >> Tavern 31 on 41. >> Tavern 41 on Sterling Puria. Okay. And you left the Tavern 41 and drove straight here. >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. Over the course of the night, how much have you had to drink? >> I probably had about three drinks. >> What's What's What What is three drinks? Do you like Are we talking What type of drinks? >> Vodka. Just vodka. >> Vodka. straight vodka or mixed drink. >> Uh vodka and water. So, I was staying hydrated, you know, and drinking >> on it. >> Like right now, if you had me do a test, I think I would pass. Just like not don't test me, but I think I would pass. >> Okay. I'm going to be honest. We we are going to do those tests here in a little bit because of circumstance. Obviously, we have to. Okay. Uh how long ago was your last drink, would you say? >> Uh my last drink I would say about 40 minutes. >> 40 minutes ago. Were you drank anything while you're in the vehicle or was the last drink at the bar? at the bar. >> Okay. On a scale of 1 to 10, one being the least drunk you've ever been, 10 being the most drunk you've ever been, where would you say you put yourself at right now? >> Five because I've been very drunk. And right now, like I see you. I see everyone. I know the situation. You know what I mean? Like I know I'm aware of everything. >> Okay, here's what I'm going to do. I'm going close the door. Uh if it stops raining, we might do some tests >> in the roadway. Otherwise, we might go back to the police station, do it. We'll figure out how we're going to do it. Okay. Is there Yeah, we got your purse, your uh phone already, and that's that's all we need out of your car, right? >> Okay. Anytime. All right. I'm going to just run your information. You got a valid license and [music] all that, correct? All right. >> All right, Stephanie, go ahead and step on out here for me. We're going to do these uh quick tests. It It started raining a little bit, but it pretty much let up. As long as you're okay with that. Okay. >> All right. Come right over here. >> What stood out, and not in a good way, was just how eerily calm Stephanie was for someone who had just plowed into two people. Not a flicker of remorse crossed her face. Nothing. The officers weren't about to let that slide, so they ran her through a series of sobriety tests. And let's just say one of those results raised more than a few eyebrows. >> This is called a PBT test. You ever blown one of these before? >> No. >> Okay. You know what the legal limit is to drive in Illinois? >> I do not, sir. >> Okay. 08. Okay. What I have you do is take a deep breath, a long hard steady blow into the stroll, just like you're blowing up a balloon. Keep blowing till you hear the machine click. Okay. Stephanie's BAC came back at a jaw-dropping 0.264, more than three times the legal limit. That wasn't just bending the rules. It was slamming into them at full speed. At that level, most folks can barely stand, let alone drive. Bloodshot eyes, wreaking of booze, and judgment out the window. It painted the picture loud and clear. She was in no shape to be behind the wheel. And now the consequences were coming in hard. >> Whatever you say. >> Okay. So, just so we're clear, I'm going to undo your seat belt. Okay. >> Oh, sorry. We're good. >> There we go. >> Okay. So, you understand what we're going to do. First off, I'm going to let you know that two pe You did hit two people total. You did. >> I didn't. >> Okay. I'm just Okay. >> However you want to word it to yourself, that's fine. Okay. I'm just telling you there's two people struck by your vehicle and both both are >> I did not hit you right now. >> Okay. Well, I'm just telling you the two people that hit your car. >> Ma'am, if I >> two people struck your vehicles, I'm telling you, and they're both deceased on scene. I'm just telling you that information. Okay. We're going to go in here. We're going to do the thing. I appreciate you being cooperative so far. I'm just tell I got to tell you what's going on. You [music] understand? >> Yes. >> Okay. Come. All right. Come on out here this way. >> I'll let you. >> All right. Right over here. Stay right here and grab all this stuff here. I'm sure there is. >> Um once we get in here, we'll tell them. They'll probably take it all for you. Okay. All right. Come follow me. Right in this emergency doors here. >> Oh, yeah. Well, your whole front wind windshield was shattered out, so that's understandable. >> Right now, I know what I hit. I know I didn't hit. >> Okay. >> And it was not two. If it was two, I'd be crying. You know what I mean? I'd be like, "Oh my god, I did this." I'd be like, "Wow, this way to Mars." But I know what I did. >> Okay. >> And I want to go to Vegas. like you're going to take me to Vegas. It's going to be so fun. I'm going to spend at least $500. I'm going to start off with two long. >> You never had enough of drinking already. >> We're talking about Vegas. There's no limit at Vegas, right? Have you been there? >> I swear to God if you're Snapchatting right now and I'm not that mad. I have such a long day tomorrow. Oh my god. I'm not going to answer anyone's Snapchat. I'm not going to answer any questions. You're going to be like, "Bro, I went home today." Okay. Well, you're being too quiet. So, I'm going to start seeing cuz I get quiet. >> Got to figure out all your paperwork. >> That's right. So ETA by the bees. Make sure that you don't show that you Show Oh, hey. You never answered me about my car and then I have school tomorrow. So, how did I get my car here tomorrow? >> Well, your car is total. >> It's what? >> Your car is total. >> Told total. >> Total wrecked. If there was ever proof someone had no business behind the wheel, it was Stephanie's eerily playful attitude and chilling lack of remorse after leaving two lives in ruins. But life has a way of evening the score. For every reckless action, there's an equal and often brutal counter reaction waiting right around the corner. >> You want me to be honest with you? You're going to jail. You don't have a bond. You killed two people tonight. I don't think you understand that. You do not have a bond. You are not getting out of jail. Your car is property of East Pure Police Department because it's a crime [music] scene. It killed two people tonight. You are clueless with that. Clearly, I've already explained this to you. You're going to jail for reckless homicide tonight. You're going to jail for aggravated DUI for killing two people. That's what's going on. So, no, you're not going to school tomorrow. You're not getting your car out of impound Tuesday. >> Did you just hear what I just told you? You said I'm not going tomorrow. I'm talking about two. >> Did you hear when I said that you >> I'm going to jail tomorrow? >> Did you You're going to jail when we're down here? >> Yes. >> Did you understand what I told that you killed people tonight? >> Yes. I'm just wondering when I can go to school. >> Okay, we're done. You're all on body camera being completely careless about killing two people tonight. You could care less. That's sad and pathetic and horrible all at the same time. >> Can you say that every time? >> Yes, ma'am. I can. >> Okay. So, can I ask when I can go back to school? So, when I like should I email you my professors and be like, "Hey, I can go back to school for a while or what?" Cuz I graduate before like >> I don't know. >> Well, to be quite frankly, I'm a little more concerned about the two people that are right now. In the end, she was charged with aggravated DUI, reckless homicide, driving under the influence, and in Stephanie's case was bizarre, but it was nothing compared to this high-speed drag race that turned disturbing, claiming the lives of two innocent young people. But in a twist no one saw coming, one of the races does the unthinkable. >> Is everyone out? You think everyone out here? There's one out here. Okay. I didn't feel a call. >> I'm too concerned about that. >> Is there Is there still a person in here? >> This is her sister. >> She wasn't in the car. >> I HAVE TO BECAUSE YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND. >> OKAY. SO, HERE'S WHAT WE'RE GOING TO >> NO, I'M NOT. YOU'RE NOT PLACING ME under arrest. >> On April the 4th, 2021, police officers were dispatched [music] in response to a wave of 911 calls flooding the system. What you're about to hear is just a few recordings from the flurry of distress calls triggered by the same chilling [music] incident. >> Please fire, the address of your emergency. >> Yes, there's been a a severe car accident on 42. >> What's the cross? >> What's the cross? >> Bubble bar. >> Bubble bar. >> County. >> Okay. How many vehicles happened? >> Two vehicles. >> Is anybody injured? >> Yes. >> Okay. What kind of injuries? >> We don't know. We're driving past it, >> but they're completely totaled. It looks like it's going to start on fire. >> Okay, you're not Are you there anymore? >> No. >> Okay, they [music] Hey, stop. They've been on the way this entire time. This is just getting more information for them for when they arrive. Okay. Like I said, we have a lot of help on the way. [music] Thank you for calling. >> Yep. Thank you. >> 10 3239 >> 911. Is this the life? >> Yes, it is. There's a car crash on 42 like right by the 42. Hold on. Hold on. 42 and what >> I don't know whatever's by the bubble bar >> happened >> the the red car was was turning like >> tell me what h accident or I can't understand >> the car crashed. Yeah the car crashed. >> Is anyone injured? >> Yes. >> Okay. Is it blocking traffic? >> I need someone to talk to me. >> The car is on fire. THERE'S ONE CAR ON FIRE. >> A car's on fire from it. Which car is on fire? >> The white car. The Chrysler car is on fire. >> Okay. Do you see planes or just smoke? >> Yes, there's flames and smoke. >> Okay. [music] Is anyone in the vehicle that's on fire? >> No, not not in the vehicle. But the the car in the SUV is the SUV. There's somebody that is not contacted. >> Just stay in the line with me. I have lots of help on the way. Are you involved or are you just passer by? >> No, I'm a passer by, but my friend's brother and sister were in the car that just got hit. >> Not long after, officers pulled up to the scene. And to say that they were blindsided would be putting it mildly. What they walked into was anything but your typical Easter morning. It was the kind of chaos [music] no one had penciled in to their holiday plans. >> Is everyone out? You think everyone out here? There's one in here. Okay. I didn't feel a Okay. >> Is there Is there still a person in here? Two in here. Got a driver and one in the back seat. >> 45 122 for 86. We've got two trapped inside of a vehicle. That'll need to be pried out. Um I don't know if they've got a either the two have a pulse. >> Don't try to fight. >> No. No. >> Okay. I I I understand your concern. I'll just have you wait back here. Thank you. >> I get a close. >> These people aren't coming out of this vehicle, right? They No. Am I seeing that right? Okay. >> All right. I appreciate your assistance. Thank you. >> I'm a former. >> Oh, you are. All right. >> All right. And we know that nobody's in this one. Everybody out. Okay, we're clear here. Okay. >> All right. I'm just I'm going to try to maintain some kind of a perimeter here. Are you okay? >> WHO'S IN THE CAR? >> IN THE CAR. >> I'll give it to you later. PLEASE GET THIS TO THE HOSPITAL NOW. I WILL GIVE IT TO YOU. I WILL GIVE IT TO YOU ALL RIGHT NOW. JUST GET THIS TO THE HOSPITAL NOW. >> SHE SHE HAS A HUGE car right here on her neck. >> Well, did you see what happened or you just hear videoing? >> I just saw this and I came over. >> Okay. So So you did see it happen or you didn't? No, I didn't see it actually. >> Okay. >> All right. Right behind you. Is there anything I can do to help get this person out? >> A pulse on that person. >> I We weren't getting a pulse on these people. Were you in the car? >> NO. >> Were you in the >> Who were you in the car? The passenger. The driver. >> Yes, please. Uh, she didn't get an ID on these two passengers. >> This is her sister. >> She wasn't in the car. She was a different car. >> Her sister was in the park. >> Yeah, I remember. >> Officers at the scene quickly unraveled the basics. Dton and Taylor had been hit by a white car driven by Leon Bond III with his twin sister Ciana in the passenger seat. Following closely behind was their older sister, Camille Bond, in a black vehicle originally believed to be uninvolved. Camille's friend Lynn, who made the 911 call, recalled how Camille leapt from the car so fast after the crash that she forgot to put it in park, leaving Lynn to [music] do it. It didn't take long for officers to suspect that this wasn't just a tragic accident, but [music] something much more serious. >> Ma'am. Ma'am, can't go over there right now. We got a car on fire. It's not safe. >> It's okay. It's okay. >> I know, baby. It's gone. It's okay. >> Sure. While her frustration [music] couldn't undo the damage, Camille's anger boiled over. Misplaced and misfired, [music] squarely aimed at the driver of the red car whom she mistakenly blamed. 1072. >> Okay. 122. There's going to be two 1072s. Officers with heavy hearts soon discovered that the two young individuals in the red car, 22-year-old [music] Dalton Lee Ford and Taylor Nicole Gaza, had lost their lives in the crash. The couple had plans to celebrate Easter with their families that morning. As bystanders gathered, disturbingly snapping photos and recording commentary, the officers began speaking to witnesses, hoping [music] to piece together the heartbreaking events that had just unfolded. As soon as she's got some green whenever we get it on his face We're going back to house so we can keep going. >> I can't even go over here right now. >> WAIT, RIGHT HERE by you. >> I had to get out. I didn't even my car. It was all dodging me. I had to get him out. How the be Hey man, the phone you had your friend like >> the one. >> Oh, >> no. Only one. >> It's not a 50. >> It's not a 50. Oh, >> was very close to me. It should have been hitting you, too, but it didn't. >> My My mom is here, but her car is up there. >> Is your car still there? >> My car is fine. >> She is she dead? That's all I need to know. >> I have no idea. >> Well, she better be. If she's not, I'm stuck in the head. >> I'm in MY CAR. I'M GOING TO MY CAR. Why don't we wait here for a second? I don't think you're able to. >> Yes, I am. I'm fine. >> No, I don't think >> I'm going to my sister. I'm going to my sister. She left. Camil, she left. >> She She's gone. Quiet though. But say it's quiet. I'm not moving here. I just need my food and my >> That's what I'm going to get for you. >> Okay. >> Stay right here, please. >> Hi. I'm not >> Look at my baby. >> I'm sorry. >> Is she your SISTER OR >> NO, THAT >> I DON'T KNOW. I don't know, man. I'm very sorry. I can't give that information, but >> we just want you to be safe right now. >> I'm fine. I just want my stuff. I'm not going anywhere. This must be really hard. >> Yeah. >> You didn't get my phone. >> Okay. Your car might be locked. So, we can't find >> It's not. My keys are in the car. It's not going to lock. >> Okay. Where's your phone? >> It's in the car. It's connected to the It's It's connected to a white plug. >> Okay. >> I have to get it. My mom's going to call me. >> I think he has it. It's with your shirt. >> Yeah. Yeah. I see it in her hand. >> Excuse my language. I'm sorry. Excuse my language. Put the strike and hit him. They said you had to. >> I'm sorry. I'm sorry. >> They went to >> They went to Richie. >> Okay. Let it go. They're both their boat. >> The passengers in the white car are okay. >> I don't know yet. >> I need everybody to go on your side of the road. >> Walk with you. I'm going to walk with you. >> We'll get it taken care of, man. >> All right. I got to go get my truck over there. >> You stay with me. >> Walk with you. >> Okay. Okay. >> All right, guys. >> Are both of them going to Hen County Medical Center? They're either going to Hampton or Rich. Rich is closer. >> Well, I was told that Tiana's going to medical for children. >> So that they're going to which is in Burnsville. >> They're going to the rescue hospital that's in Burnsville. >> And that's why I hope that the one >> I hope that she is because she's carried. >> Can you talk to her cuz she just said that they just passed that hospital. >> She just she tried to tried to go around her. Soon, the entire scene took a sharp turn when the officers brought out the cuffs, an unmistakable signal that things were about to get a lot more serious. The gravity of the crash could no longer be ignored. It was officially under criminal investigation. >> We're still We have to wait for the medical examiner to get here before we can touch any of the cars. You could expedite. We're going to go 10:15 with this. >> So, what is your first name? >> Camille. >> Okay, Camille. Here's what's going to happen is we're going to be placing you under arrest. >> Why? >> For criminal vehicular operation. >> How? >> Well, you were racing your brother. >> No, I was not. >> So, here's what we're going to do. We have to examine all of our phones and that type of stuff. So, like I said, we can go two ways. I If we have to put you in handcuffs, we're going to But we're going to take you back to our station to talk to you. >> Nobody was racing. We were going 65. >> Okay. So, I I understand that. >> No, no, no, no, no, no. >> Okay. So, you think you're going 65? >> We weren't even going that fast. And I watched it. That's the thing. I I watched it and I He was even behind me. >> So, who squeealled out at the intersection there? Do you Who squeealled out back at that intersection way down there? Did you have a witness that said that somebody smoke the tires? >> No, we did not. I I even I literally we left at the same time. Nobody had wheels nor nothing. >> Okay. >> That whoever told you that is lying. And I'm just going to say it like this. Whoever told you well who said that most likely it's probably white. And I know it is. We were not racing. No, none of that. >> You weren't racing at all. I told him for a simple fact, for a simple fact, I'm going to tell you just like this. For a simple fact, we are black. It is a nice day outside. I know that the police are out. We see the state troopers out. We were not going. I said, "We're going to just go the speed limit up here." He said, "Okay, his car his car has more more horsepower than mine does. So, obviously, it's going to sound like it because I know how the engine sounds and I'm going to spit fast. My car is slow." Okay. >> But I was in front >> so he knows I was in front. >> Okay. Obviously, I'm going to be in front because he's going to follow my lead. We were not going fast. She gassed on it. When I mean she gassed on it, she didn't see him because he was behind me. I actually my car was up there, but I moved it up here because it was rolling back and it was still in drive. I don't want to mess on my transmission. She gassed on it to try to him. >> Okay. So, I I appreciate you telling me all that type of stuff. So, like I said, our process is this. Okay. I >> Please don't do that. I'm already black and it already looks bad enough. >> It has nothing to do with race, man. We have two people that are dead right now caused by an accident >> because gas on it. >> Okay. >> That has nothing to do with me and my brother. We were not We were not speeding. What do you not understand? >> You know what the speed limit is on? >> Yes, it's 55. You were going 60. >> Okay. >> It's not my problem that she wanted to be a dumb [ __ ] and try to beat us. THAT'S NOT MY PROBLEM. You placing me under arrest for something that we did not do. We have digital dashes, bro. >> Hey, we're going to GET ALL THAT. >> WE HAVE DIGITAL DASHES. So therefore, we were going to fix it. >> So you don't have to yell AT ME. I HAVE TO BECAUSE YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND. >> OKAY. SO, here's what we're GOING TO HAVE. >> NO, I'M NOT. YOU'RE NOT PLACING me under arrest or anything. >> Okay. SORRY, >> BABY. I love you. I love all of you guys. >> Stay there. >> Please. Please. Baby, >> you're going to be in handcuffs in a minute if you don't stay over there. >> Please, baby. I love you guys. I love all you guys. >> Let's go. >> I love you, Mom. Yep. Yeah. And yes, they did use force and I was not resisting. >> So, miss, what we'll do is we'll take a statement from you and everything you said. >> Seems like please >> when we get back to our station. Okay. >> Love you guys. >> Can you uh Jay, you want to pat her down quick? >> I don't have anything. >> I know. I got to make sure. >> They land in my ass. Like, she literally jumped in front of my car. >> So, it was a hit and run. >> No, cuz I didn't run. [laughter] >> Let them know. Um, let them know that your best friend is down here. Let them see. Let them >> Where are you at? >> I'm right here at the marathon. >> Do you hear her? >> What? >> Am I able? >> I'm right here. >> You're not able to leave. >> They said not to walk up that I'm not able to leave. >> Are you okay? >> Yeah. Some girl jumped in front of my car. >> Are you okay? >> I'm okay. My car is totaled. Everything's total. >> And the girl is not down there. >> She's think >> Oh my god. Please don't say that. I think she's Bro, >> was it that kind of bad of an impact? >> Yeah, like my whole airbags went off and everything. >> So far, her story centered on how the victim [music] got in her way with not a shred of accountability or genuine concern for the person that she had hit. But she wasn't done yet. In fact, she had even more to say, even though none of it was going to help her case in any way. >> [music] >> But at least from the look of things, it only showed her sense of entitlement. >> I locking you up. >> Like everybody in the street was like, "Baby girl, you okay?" Cuz we didn't see her. She jumped. >> Oh my god. Girl, when you said that I see a leg going down my street, >> dude. She jumped. Dude, she jumped. >> There was no like there's no pedestrian walk. There's no nothing. She just jumped in front of my car. >> And her car was she walking? She was walking. >> Oh my god. >> No shoes, no nothing. >> You say what? >> No shoes, no nothing. Like she was homeless. >> Oh my god. >> Hold on. I got to call my man. >> Surprisingly, all the fatals I've had, they haven't been like bloody. They've just been It's from the impact block force trauma. >> My head doesn't really turn like that. >> That's how close. That's actually crazy. I actually saw. >> You'll remember. I'm telling you. You might think, "Oh, this one's nothing." But I promise you, you'll remember that for the rest of your life. >> It wasn't long before officers began looking keenly into the who, what, and how. Determined to unravel exactly what went down and why it ended in tragedy. >> Did she not make it? >> She started. I saw the shoes. the shoes. >> Run out of ravens and then she made it all the way over here. [music] >> So from here we're you're going to stay in the car cuz this will be a whole deal. >> I have the driver. >> Yeah, cuz I put the driver in your car. >> Is there a girl standing over there? >> This is my rider. >> Oh, >> I didn't know. >> Never mind. I'm like, was she [laughter] witness? Yeah, she originally I'm just going to add this to >> I see her shoes. >> Chicago's mayor socks right here, but I don't know if >> I see the socks and then I see her shoes. So, I mean, she's not >> the lady off of Orchard said she didn't see it, but she heard it. When she heard it, she looked up and the lady was up in the air, hit the windshield, and went flying. >> Yeah. And the I haven't ran the driver yet, but she's trying to leave. Well, >> the driver >> Well, she's not trying really hard. >> She's on the phone with her friend, and her friend's like, "Tell them that you need to come pick up your friend." I'd take that. I'd take that phone. K is going to lose [music] his mind on if he gets here and she has that phone. So typical human being like she just went through a traumatic so like I have sympathy for him. He usually I used to like if they wanted to sit there and deescalate the situation by being on the phone to someone that'll make them feel better. Okay, do it. >> Because one thing with the spontaneous utterances which is like I haven't read you Miranda. I'm not asking any questions but you're like I just can be used in court. Now, if I ask you without reading you, Miranda, like you just and you're like, "Yep, I can't use that in court." >> Are you able to complete your phone call? >> Yeah. >> I'm going to have I'm going to put you up in the front. Okay. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Am I >> She'll call you back later. >> Am I in trouble? >> I'm not saying that you're in trouble. I'm just saying that this is now an investigation. And I >> She jumped out of nowhere. >> No, I understand. And I'm not the person to start talking or anything like that. Okay. She jumps out of nowhere. >> I understand. And I I'm I'm going to take that. But I'm just I'm just saying that your phone's just going to go up to the front with me. You'll be able to see it sitting right up there. Okay. >> She jumps over. >> She jumped out of nowhere. Everybody will say that. >> Just breathe. Okay. Just breathe. >> I'll be right there with you. >> So, a lot of times what you'll see is I'll put them in the back, activate the camera, and give them their phone because then they'll start talking on their phone and give up all that information. You didn't ask them anything. But we just got an email the other day from one of our lieutenants that something like this happens, we need to treat them like suspects and take everything from them until proven otherwise. So there's a lot of people hit on this road. And it's usually about this time when you can't see them walking on the side of the road. They got some excitement. >> Yeah. >> Is she alive? They're okay with him coming up. >> Is she alive? >> [snorts] >> I'm not a criminal. I swear. >> I'm not saying you're a criminal. >> I'm just a mom. I go to school and I go to work. I was just grabbing a friend. I've never been in a car accident. Never had anything. Like, is she alive? >> No. She >> with time and especially after her phone was taken away, the situation started to take a clearer shape. >> It was such a good day. Such a good day. Now I might have somebody. I don't even know how. How does that work though? Like if this girl actually like is technically innocent, does she get charged with like manslaughter or anything like that? So basically what they do is they go through all field suppression tests, make sure like if you're impaired and all that's the reasoning. >> Um so once they pull that out and say like that was not the cause of this, they'll go over to the incident with them and talk to the witnesses and whatnot which there ain't really any witnesses. The lady said she seen the girl hit by the car, but she didn't see how it happened. She just seen heard the noise, looked up and the lady was up in the air, hit the windshield and went flying. >> He said there's going to be other officers coming talking to me. Yeah, they're on the way. >> Have they talked to other witnesses? >> Huh? >> Are they going to talk to other witnesses? >> Yeah, they're going to talk to everyone. >> They They also suck. Like, she just came out of nowhere. She just >> Oh, do you have to hit someone to knock their socks off? That's crazy. >> I can't wrap my head around that. >> We got basic knowledge of how to do [music] this. The traffic has like a dance. >> She jumps out of nowhere. I swear to God. There's multiple witnesses. >> Yeah. I haven't talked to the witnesses. >> They They all said they all gathered around me and they even said they're like, "She came out of nowhere." Like, we don't understand. >> No, I'm not. >> Like, I swear I've never even been in a fender bender before. >> Yeah. I see that. Looks like you got a driver's license. >> Yeah. Besides speeding. I get that. >> You have a warrant though. What? >> It's not extraditable over here though. >> For what? I only have one speeding ticket. >> Did you forget to pay your ticket? >> It's 100 bucks and that's not until April. >> Hear about that. >> Before long, more officers arrived on scene, ready to investigate further and figure out exactly what went down at the scene and how best to get to the bottom of it. Okay, I'll give you the equivalent. What's going on? We got one vehicle versus one pedestrian. The fourth team didn't make it. Pedestrian is over there behind the left car. We got a The pedestrian still there. We've got her surrounded with like a park or something. Um, a Rose Co vehicle is there at the fortune. She has the driver of the vehicle in her squad. Okay. So, if we walk up, um, she came out of nowhere. She really did. I would never hit somebody on purpose and I would never like I'd rather myself besides hit somebody. So, if I ever saw her, I'd run anywhere else besides to hurt anything besides this situation. We haven't yet. >> Yeah, she might have ridden it. Took person a while to get it stopped finally. Can you please just go to PlayStation or something? I have to be I just want this done. I just don't want to keep sitting there looking at feel like a goddamn thing is right now. Yeah, I didn't know if they had that occupied. Adam and I was going to ask you, but I didn't know if >> what are we really waiting for the traffic officers to come talk to you. I don't know if they can tell me what to do. I already told you I don't have a decision making capabilities right now. They control the scene. >> Are they here now? >> That it's going to be a while. So, we're both be waiting a minute. >> I think this lady just walked out in front of his car. >> Oh, that wind. I think Dave remember right Dave said they said you have to look. >> I was going to say that's howious distance from here to >> and for the for the socks to come off before the shoes come off. >> That was when [music] the real storm began. The officers had seen enough and it was time to make her realize that her actions had serious consequences. Talk to the driver what she had to say. Hi, Savannah. Yeah, >> I'm officer Police Department. This is Officer Bishop. We're crash investigators. We got called in. Um, you doing okay? >> Yeah. >> You're not hurt, are you? >> I don't think so. >> No, you've been asking questions already, but we'll have to ask two questions. Okay. Could you tell us what happened today? >> She I was just driving down the road and she came out of nowhere. >> Literally nowhere. And as I hit her, I was shocked. And all the everybody else even said that she came out of nowhere. >> Other people as in people with you or people in other cars? >> No, no other cars. I was just driving. >> Okay. Where were you coming from today? Cuz I see that you live in what is it? >> I work with the pony. >> At the where? >> The pony. >> Oh, okay. I got you. All right. I work there. And where were you heading to? >> I was just grabbing my friend. >> It's like 10 minutes away. I have her address in my phone. >> Okay. Just going to pick up your friend. Um, obviously driving southbound on. [music] Are you familiar with this road at all? >> No, I'm not. I'm not here at all. >> How long have you been into barely ever? >> Okay. So, you get into town today? >> Yeah. Just >> came to grab her. >> Okay. Um, so as you're going down the road, um, I wasn't on D. What was the weather like? Was it rain at the time? Was it >> It was like not not really rainy. It's kind of sunny. >> Okay. But like I was driving behind people and I was just driving down the road and out of nowhere, literally out of nowhere, I just hit and I was like, "What the hell?" And then the person in front of me stopped. The girl that was walking stopped and she was like, "I called 911." And I was like, "You did?" And we all ran over there and like all of them started running to me and they're like, "She came out of nowhere." And I was like, "You guys seen that, right?" Like she she was nowhere. And they're like, "Yes, she came out of nowhere." Like we understand that. So, there's other cars around you that were in front of you. >> Yes, there was a car. The black SUV. >> Black SUV. >> Yeah. Well, there was a couple. >> Okay. >> Um, do you know where she came from? Was she walking on the road? >> She was walking on this side of the road. Like this side on the line? >> Well, I think in the grass. >> Did you see her step out in the road? >> No, I didn't see her step out in the road. Like, it just literally just happened. >> Okay. >> When you were driving, were you doing anything else? I'll be driving on your phone. >> You know about how fast you're going? >> No. >> Were you driving with traffic? Were you driving slow? >> You said there was a black SUV in front of you. >> Yes, you could ask them. They were standing there before. Like when I hit her, they were standing out there. >> For a crash that mangled the car that badly, she had to be flying. But her story was carefully stitched together to dodge all blame. Unfortunately for her, the cops could see all the loopholes in her stories, and it was only a matter of time before her lies started to haunt her. >> Was there any of the traffic driving with you that you were call? >> No, there was a girl walking her dog, and then there was a black SUV with a couple. >> Was she walking with anybody else? Was she by herself? >> I think she was by herself. >> All right. Um, >> when you >> What happened after the collision? Were you able to stop it real fast? >> I stopped right then and there. I stopped >> and I ran [snorts] out of my car and I looked at her and the girl that was walking the dog over there, she said, I yel, she yelled and she was like, I called 911 and she ran over and then the guy came out of his SUV and he ran over and he said, "Are you okay?" He was like, "I seen what happened." >> Okay. Now, when you two had the collision, did she immediately fall on the ground? She like >> She was already on the ground. >> She wasn't like stuck on the hood or anything? >> No, she was on the ground. >> What lane were you in? >> This lane. >> The lane closest to the road. I mean, like to the side. >> Right. >> Whatever lane my car is at right now is the lane I was. I just stopped my car [music] immediately right there. >> Okay. >> What lane was the black SUV in? >> Same lane he was in front of me. Okay. Hang tight. [music] >> Did you talk to them? The black SUV in front of me and the girl that was walking the dog. >> I don't see him here. We're checking with officers to see what information. >> He was here when like you guys pulled up. He was here. >> We all came from home. So, we're trying to figure everything out right now. >> She was here and he he would even say he said he didn't see her. And the girl walking the dog, she said the same thing. >> They call police. Call 911 as well. >> Yeah, they called 911. What's up with this? >> We told you she passed. >> We'll be here for a while working investigation. We got to talk to some other people. We'll be back with you in a little bit. Okay. >> You have any questions for us right now? Sitting here. [music] That way you're staying warm and dry. Okay. Anything else? >> So, they all left without giving you a statement? >> I I don't know. We're still trying to figure that out cuz we only got here ourselves a few minutes ago talking to some of the command that's out here. >> Trying to figure that out and if not, we'll see who called in and we'll start calling those numbers and seeing who saw what. Okay. >> You with a little bit. >> Her lack of surprise and remorse when told the victim had passed was one thing, but what came next said it all. Still focused on herself, her words oozed defensiveness like someone desperate to slip away. But the real question was what exactly was she running from? >> I I don't know. We're still trying to figure out because we only got here ourselves a few minutes ago talking to some of the command that's out here. >> Trying to figure that out. And if not, we'll see who called in and we'll start calling those numbers and seeing who saw what. Okay. >> What are they thinking? What are they thinking? What are they talking about? her identified. No one was home. They called the number that was calling her as a twin sister. So family knows twin sister told office that they argue with her all the time about walking on she's going to get hit. I'm wondering if she's walking up side and she goes across here when she gets hit. >> Yeah, I'm thinking she was crossing like at the intersection. >> Got pictures though. I have to use the bathroom. Is there a bathroom? that you need to know about? >> No, I don't know who to talk to. I don't know what's going on. I don't never been in this situation. Don't I need to call like a lawyer or something? >> After that, the officer stepped away briefly to process everything that she had said. She'd been slippery up to this point, but it wasn't long before they changed their [music] approach and came at her with a whole new game plan. >> Savannah, >> I'm officer Bishop. I'm with the Pory Police Department Traffic Division. I'm just going to talk to you a little bit more. All right. >> You're in town cuz you work at the Pony. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Have you been at work tonight yet or? >> I stopped there. My friend called me, asked me to come get her, so I left there. Just run down. Like I literally dropped my stuff off there. I was like, "All right, I'll come grab you." Drove down the street and then this happened. >> Okay. What time did you go in then? >> Like literally like 10 minutes before all this happened. >> Okay. >> Approximate time. >> I have no idea. I don't even know what time I got there. Like I wasn't looking at my phone. I walked in, looked at the bartender, said I'm clocking in and then I was like, "Oh, wait. Rain called me." So then I dropped my stuff off, walked out, came here. >> Okay. But it was about 10 minutes before this happened. >> Yes. Right down the street. >> And you were going to pick up rain. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Okay. >> Where does she stay at? >> Um whatever address was on my GPS. >> Okay. Gotcha. Um so as you're heading down the road, what do you see? Like do you remember your route at all? Like >> I was the GPS is on my screen cuz you see in the screen on there is a GPS. I turn. I was just driving down out of nowhere. are just smashed and all a sudden I see smoke. I see everything. I'm like, "What the hell is going on?" And I slam on my brakes and then I get out of the car and I see her and then everybody starts running over and they're like, "You okay? Like you okay? Like we seen what happened? Like you all right?" And I was like, "She just came out of nowhere." And they're like, "We understand." Like we we didn't see her either. And I was just like, "I don't understand." And then the guy in front of me got out his car and he like grabbed my shoulder and he's like, "You okay?" And I was like, "Where did she come from?" He's like, "I don't know." Like I like I don't understand either. Like they've all said like we don't understand. >> Okay. So, do you remember what road you came down though? Like did you make a ride on? >> Yeah. I just [music] turned down this road and I came down here. >> Okay. Had you been through any traffic lights recently? >> Probably. >> And you said earlier that you were traveling in the right lane, the closest to the car? >> Yes. >> Okay. And there's a black SUV in front of me. >> Did you catch their names at all or? >> No. Nope. >> Because as soon as he came out and talked to me, I was put in the back of the car. >> Okay, gotcha. And is your driving how fast would you say you were going approximately? >> The speed limit. >> What is the speed limit? >> Whatever the is on my GPS. The GPS tells you the speed limit. >> Okay. >> Do you remember if she came from your right side? Was she out in front of the car? >> Right on the right side. >> From the left side. Well, yeah, the right side. >> Okay. Did you see anything prior to the hit? >> Not really. I was just driving down the road right behind the black SUV. >> About how much distance was between you and the black SUV? >> Like two cars. >> Two cars. >> Yes. >> Okay. So, did she step out in between the two or >> She had to have. Did you guys talk to the guy in the black SUV? >> There was nobody here like witnesswise when we got here. When I >> Are you serious? cuz there was a girl with a dog and there was a black SUV with a couple in front of them and they both said the same thing. >> We're still not saying that they weren't and I'm not saying that nobody >> So like the witnesses that were here went before you guys got here >> before I personally got here. I came from my home. So I got called in. >> So they they statement to somebody. >> I don't know. I don't know who talked to everybody yet. >> Okay. [snorts] Can I call a lawyer? >> What's that? >> Can I call a lawyer? >> You would like to talk to a lawyer? >> No, I mean like the witnesses that were here that also had the same thing. >> Sensing her walls going up even higher, the officers turned their sights on one lingering suspicion they needed to clear. And this was their moment to press. Um, >> you've been drinking any alcohol today? >> No. >> Using any illegal drugs? >> No. >> Using any illegal medications? My >> reason to believe that right now, but it's a question I got to ask. >> Okay. >> Um, what I would like to ask is if you'd be willing to give me a breath sample to show that you don't have any alcohol in yourself. >> Okay. >> Would you be willing to do that? >> Yeah. >> Thank you. >> So, for this deep breath in, long steady breath like you're trying to blow up a balloon. Okay. blow blow blow blow blow blowing going today. >> Just at the barn earlier this morning for a bloody mary. >> Shouldn't have been anything though. >> How long ago was that? >> Hours ago. >> How many hours ago? >> Well, it's an hour and a half to get to Poria from my place. So, hour and a half before all this. >> Okay. I'll be with you in a minute. Okay. There six. Like I asked her, I'm like, "Are you drinking?" No. Did that drink oil and bloody Mary like a while ago? Like she was at home. I smell perfume, but I thought I may have gotten a slight odor as I was talking to her. >> A 0.16 [music] blood alcohol concentration, BAC, is no small number. Twice the legal limit and enough [music] to crank up the consequences. Maybe it fueled the crash. Maybe it was the missing piece tying everything together. Either way, the officers didn't waste a second. With this new finding in hand, [music] they took her to the station to press further and get to the heart of the matter. Never even been in a bender bender. Like, god, the universe really threw this one at me. >> Hey, Savannah. >> Yep. >> We're going to move to this car over here. >> Is that a good thing or a bad thing? >> You're still on handcuffs or anything right now? I say just got to move you over here. Um, we're going to run down to the police department. >> My phone. >> We'll grab it. I'm going to ask you to do a couple things for me. Um, based on we're investigating a fatal car crash. All right. So, pretty serious incident. >> Um, [music] I'm not saying that >> she she literally came out of nowhere. >> And I know that's what you're telling me, but just like if you were on the other end of it, you would want us to do our job fully so that you know, family and stuff like that. >> There was no crosswalk. You know, she was really right there in all places said the same thing. >> I gotcha. And we're trying. We're talking to everybody. So, we're going to knock on doors. We're calling all the people that >> talk to the ones that were there. Like, >> yeah. Yes. >> Did they say the same thing? She just like came riding out of nowhere. >> Everybody literally everybody said, "Ral, I'm going to ask you some to do. First thing I want you to do. Do you did you graduate? What's your uh highest level of education? >> I'm in college for nursing right now. >> Nursing. Okay. How far along are you? >> About to start my first year. I finished my generals. I'm about to start to clinicals. >> Okay. So, associates degree or any right now. >> Okay. Um high school. >> High school. Yes. >> Graduated. Okay. Um, so what I want you to do is just count backwards for me from 69 to 43. >> Her results from multiple sobriety [music] tests raised red flags, poor coordination, shaky responses, the whole 9 yards. But before anyone could even pass judgment, she did what she does best. [music] Jumped straight into defense mode. >> Maintain your position, though. >> No matter what, I'm clumsy. >> Two. Three. All right, go back to the start. Sir, I just somebody on accident. Like my mind is not here. >> Okay. Well, I need you to do this. >> I just did my daughter's birthday party and then I somebody. >> Okay. >> Do you want to complete the test? >> I just want to get home to my kid. [snorts] >> What do you want me to do? You want me to keep walking? What do you want? >> Do you want me to go through the instructions again or do you have it? I did. >> It is not my fault that somebody decided to walk in front of my car. There is no crosswalk. There is nothing. Nobody seen her. She just darted in front of my car. She committed with my car. Now I might not be able to see my daughter because somebody decided to dart in front of my car. What do you mean? >> I want you to I kid. I just want >> I want you to do the walk and the turn just like I explained it to you. >> I am walking. I am walking. [snorts] I am walking. I am walking. I am walking. There I am walking. I just want my kid. I just want my daughter. [snorts] I just want to know what is going on. I just want to know be able to tell her what is going on. >> I'm here. I've been sitting in a cop car for hours. There's no way I'm possibly drunk. I just want to go home. I just want my kid. >> I don't have >> I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I just want my kid. >> Do you want to finish this or not? >> Well, I'd like to get through this. in a blue Honda. >> We read the lights. We did everything. What the [ __ ] do you want from me? >> Some girl just walked in front of my car. There is witnesses. This doesn't prove anything. She just walked in front of my car. >> Like I said, I understand that, but this is all part of the investigation. >> What? There's somebody for me to ride with my car. >> I want you to I'm going to explain something. Okay. When I tell you to, I want you to tilt your head back, close your eyes. I want you to approximate the passage of 30 seconds. Okay? When you think 30 seconds has passed, I want you to >> How many of these tests is there? [snorts] >> I want you to open your eyes and tell me stop. >> Do you think you can do that? Like I said, >> I'll try. >> Just tip your head back, close your eyes, >> and whatever you do to approximate the passage of 30 seconds. Okay. And then open your eyes. Tell me stop. Let me get my whenever you're ready. >> Okay. How long was that? >> 30 seconds. Was that >> How did you get there? >> I was [music] counting >> counting like one, two, or >> just by one. So one, two, >> uh 25.8. Okay, one more thing real quick. I'm going to place you under arrest for driving under the influence. Okay. >> How did you figure that one out? Test after I just hit somebody or obviously I'm not going to pass a test. I might do something traumatic. Let's just go. >> Um, can I call lawyer too soon? [music] I got more. >> What's that? >> Can I call my lawyer? >> In the end, Savannah was ultimately hit with two [music] counts of DUI, both class A demeanor, and one count of aggravated DUI, a class 2 felony that upped the stakes significantly. And then there's her, as high as the Empire State. She hit someone, kept cruising, and claimed she was just cruising. flames, you know, and >> X-ray, too. >> She made it over over him and hit the one in front >> and knocked him out of the way. >> She kept coming right up on my bump and as we were stopping, she almost tailgated me twice. >> Who's all going to hold against me in court? >> On January the 5th, 2022, officers were dispatched to a location on the highway in regards to a traffic accident that involved a truck and two motorcycles, which led to severe injuries. When they arrived at the scene of the incident, they met a lady panicking beyond proportion as she tried to revive someone. The police went to interrogate the woman and soon started to see signs of a high level of intoxication. >> Are you okay? >> How you doing? I'm a little >> You were driving. >> Oh, yeah. >> All right. Okay. No problem. We'll figure it out. Okay. >> It'll be all right. We'll figure we'll figure this out. Hey, listen. >> Scary. >> Listen. I know it's scary. I know it's scary. I know you're scared. Okay. >> All right. No problem. No problem. >> 10 minutes to get away with. >> No problem. Listen, >> we'll work it out. Okay. Do you have a driver's license? >> Thank you. >> Sorry. >> My daughter's going to be hoping somewhere online. Oh my god. I hate taking rest. It puts me asleep all the way. I hate this road. I go out of my way. Just sit in the truck. Make sure my boyfriend. >> That's fine. Was your boyfriend in the truck or no? >> No problem. No problem. Just hang out here. Okay. >> I'm like, what? I don't understand. Oh, everybody was like riding the bus and stopper flying. I'm like, what the heck? So, like I like switches, you know, and >> X-ray too. I wasn't even myself. I don't know how it all happened to >> Are you hurt anymore, Mark? >> I got to uh skin news or from what you after the crash. >> No, this was what I fell at this morning. >> We'll figure out somebody else. >> So, this isn't from >> the officers also questioned some witnesses who disclosed some scary and heartwrenching details of the incident. You >> okay? >> Yeah, kind of. Um, >> it's kind of traumatic. >> Nastiest thing I've ever seen in my life. >> That man rolled so many times underneath that pickup. >> Oh my god. I can't believe he was breathing when we got out. >> So, what did you um Oh, actually, first and foremost, you have a driver's license. I can write down your info. >> So, tell me everything you saw. >> I didn't witness her driving prior to the incident. >> That's okay. >> But I was behind the motorcycles at first and as we started to match speeds, she just completely ran over the >> Do you have? >> Yep. >> Thank you. >> You're behind the motorcycle first. Yes. >> When you started to match speeds and everyone's going the same speed, >> I switched over >> new dad reflexes. >> That's it. >> I'm like Spider-Man. >> I switched over to the middle lane back here before central. >> Okay. >> And as soon as we got right up to around central, she plowed into the older man and behind and just drove straight over him. >> How did it happen? He she he was in the left lane. She was behind him and she was just going way too fast. And >> they weren't stopping or breaking or anything. We were all doing about 40 and >> No, no, not for you. For him. You see how far back it goes? >> Oh yeah. >> Oh yeah, it was right after central. >> Oh, >> yeah. So anyways, so the motorcycles, you said they were slowing down or No, >> no, not at all. We were all moving right along about 40 m an hour and the next thing you know, >> rear motorcycle, the older gentleman is rolling underneath the truck as it's the motorcycle is being drugged down the road. She made it over over him and hit the one in front >> and knocked him out of the way. >> Thanks, man. You, too. >> And she drove pretty far with him under the truck, it sounds it looks like. >> Yeah. >> Well, the black one kind of got pushed forward and down. >> So, did she did she actually hit both motorcycles? >> How were they both in They were both in the left. >> One of them went Yeah, they were right behind one another. The older man was behind, younger man was in front within I'd say 5t 6 ft of each other. >> Okay. So, she hit the old man on the motorcycle. >> It went under her. >> Started started tumbling. He's tumbling underneath the truck and then she's continuing and then hits the other. >> Now, I don't know if he slowed down just to figure out what the hell was going on cuz we all heard the crash >> and I slowed down cuz I thought for sure he was coming under my truck. He >> Yeah. tumbled and rolled and tumbled and rolled. >> Yeah, man. I'm sorry. That's horrible. And you spoke to the detective already? >> No. >> Okay. >> Well, just that you know, I saw it happen and he told me to come speak to you. >> That's fine. Well, the the the one in the um sort of plain clothes. Not plain clothes, but it was just this and the shirt, not the outer vest and the ball cap. All right. I'll have him he'll probably want to speak with you, too. >> Okay. >> He Yeah. Yeah. This guy here. >> Haven't spoke to him yet. >> Okay, good. I'm sorry that you're gonna have to retell your story a couple. It's just we have to be thorough, you know. >> Hey, um that's one of the reasons I stopped. >> Yeah, we appreciate you for doing that. So, tell me everything you saw about what happened >> again. You want me to I told Lieutenant >> I just need So, since I'm doing the crash report, I just need a basic >> Okay. >> You know, and and and I'm sorry. And in a serious crash like this, a couple of people are going to need the story. >> I understand. um coming down south on US1. This vehicle, this Toyota Tundra was behind me and I noticed in my rear view mirror, she kept coming right up on my bump and as we were stopping, she almost tailgated me twice. And as we were driving, she was all over the road. I finally moved over just to get away from her. And as she went by, I'm looking and she's she's got a phone in her hand and she's looking down, looking up, looking down, looking up. And then this happened. >> Did you see how the crash actually happened or >> No, I did not. All I do, all I do breaking and Okay. >> I never saw her hit the brakes until pieces of [ __ ] were flying all over the place. So, as far as I can tell, she hit that she hit that bikes before she ever hit her brakes. >> Okay. >> And that probably that'll definitely be on on that on that splash. >> Awesome. Thank you. >> All right. I have the SD card and we will let you know should you need to get it back or anything like that. Okay. >> Yeah. I'm sure. >> Yeah, I guess. Okay. After concluding their investigations, they conducted a criminal investigation on the suspect for driving under the influence. But she seemed very confused. Soon she was apprehended and was asked to take some tests during which she tried to manipulate the police emotionally, but they were way smarter than her trick. Okay, I won't. >> I know. I don't think you are. >> Am I even driving? >> Are you asking about the condition of >> I can't hear you. >> Yeah, I know. >> I don't think it's drivable. Looks like a motorcycle pretty much jammed with it. No, I don't think your truck's drivable. >> So, what what happens now? You guys tell it or >> We have a process. >> We have a kit. We have a certified kit here. It's sealed. Will you give us a sample of the blood? >> Well, right now, right now, we're just looking for the sample. Okay. So, we got the blood sample. Thank you for that. We are now requesting a lawful test of your breath to determine the alcohol content of your breath. Will you give us a breath sample? You gave us the blood. So this is all going to hold against me and cause so I go to kill the person. >> This is all for the >> I don't know nothing about the [ __ ] law. I don't have no law to scare me in the right direction and I could be answering all these rustings. No, you don't have a warrant. No, you don't have a warrant. I don't know what the [ __ ] >> I'll tell listen I'll tell you exactly what >> if you want to know the consequences of not providing the breath I'll tell you >> cuz I can read it to you. >> So now that >> right so now that you know the consequences should you decide not to give a breath sample will you give us a breath sample? >> Okay. All right. So what we'll do from here is we'll the breath sample the tester is over at the jail. So we'll go get that. Okay. In the end, the woman was charged with DUI manslaughter and secondderee felony and was sentenced to 14 years and 3 months of imprisonment. She also received a lifetime [music] suspension of her driver's license. The victim of her reckless driving later succumbed to his injuries. She was bad, no doubt, but nothing compared to this drunk disaster who killed someone then tried to sob his way out of justice. >> Couldn't do anything. It it just locked like and it's oh my god my life is gone forever. >> As long as I didn't hit him first. This is the only thing I heard. I I thought it was white out of the impulse of like it happened. >> I was in this last year. Yeah. >> On July the 11th, 2023, officers were dispatched to a road junction concerning reports [music] of a severe collision which involved numerous vehicles, including a truck and a pedestrian. When the police arrived, another report came in about a shirtless man roaming around the scene of the incident. The officers joined witnesses in administering CPR to the pedestrian, and during this, the shirtless man appeared, offering to help, and it was immediately obvious that he was intoxicated. >> [music] >> The man, barechested and tearful, attempted to manipulate the police with his emotions. I was no no. >> So, we need to >> I was in this last June. No, >> I was involved. >> Yes, but I >> Were you the only one in the truck? >> Can I Can I just >> take a breath? I I I passed one vehicle I got into. How many >> please? No. No. I I I literally I was in a coma last June. >> Come over here. >> Oh my god. >> Come talk to me over here. >> Hey guy. >> Just I need to know. Were you Were you in the Were you in the black? >> I just Yeah, I know. What's your name? >> Carson. >> Yes, I was at I was at the Cedar River by the Maple Valley course over there. I was just driving back and and I did pass one vehicle. Yes, I I I accept that. But >> I don't know what the A Ford F-150. >> Which which car are you driving? >> Over here. Over here. It's the one that's in the ditch. >> And you're okay. And you're by yourself? >> I am I am physically okay, but >> mentally this happened last year. Carson, can you walk with me over here? Let's step away from all this. Here, come over here. >> Are you injured? >> No, I'm physically not injured. Oh my gosh. >> Here, come over here. >> Let's just step away from all this. This is a lot, right? >> I did watch the collision happen if he left. >> Yeah. I'll grab a statement from you in just a sec. Okay. >> This is a bottle that came out of the bag that the guy dumped with the beers that weren't open >> and he threw the empty bag over the truck. This also came out of that bag. >> Okay. I just came from the river. Oh my. >> Let's close. >> God, >> I gave him I don't know if you can see blood. >> I see. Yeah, you Sounds like you did good there. You helped him, right? >> No, I didn't do good. >> Come here. >> Oh my god. >> How old are you, Carson? >> I'm 19 and my life is gone. >> Where do you live, man? >> I live in Maple Valley. My life is gone. >> Where were you heading to? >> I was going to Maple Valley. I literally just came from >> We were driving this way driving >> and this truck passed us in a no passing zone quite fast. >> Very fast. >> Which way were they coming? >> They were going. >> We were both coming this direction. >> And they had a bunch of cars ahead of them. We did not see the actual accident happen, but as we came over that rise, we saw >> So they were behind you initial. Initially >> they were behind us about >> accident happened after >> half a mile back and they passed us in a no passing zone. >> I passed somebody and I as soon as I got into the lane my my wheel just locked >> locked it it I couldn't do anything. It it just locked like and it's oh my god my life is gone forever. I I bought it in fe I bought it in February from I >> the name I knew him well was Bubba. I can tell you their exact address. I could at least >> So, you just bought the car. Okay. Were you Were you late? >> I drank a couple beers in the river, but no, I am I could plausibly stand for myself if that's what you are requiring me to do. >> Were you late or how come you're like >> No, I I I just got the truck. I just put the shocks in two like literally two days ago. Rancho shocks. I just put them in. And and regardless of that aspect, I was just trying to just feel the comfort of the ride and >> Yeah. Okay. >> And I didn't. >> So, you're just cruising. You're going >> I >> I'm in >> I'm in the wrong, but I don't want to lift my life away. If I have to push my life away, I'm going to go away. >> That's I I I I don't hate you in any respect, >> but I don't know what the went wrong for it to hang right. How they're going to ask how fast do you think you're going when the kid was hit? >> 50 >> 50 m. No, I didn't pass freeway limit. Oh, >> so you're going this way? >> Yes. Did you crash down this way? >> Did you crash before after the >> No, I I let go. I I realized it occurred cuz I >> It was right through the pass. Yes. Yes. >> Or you don't know. >> I don't know. >> He passed right here and then I came into this lane and it it's as if he came from this house cuz his mother came out immediately. Okay. And >> she wasn't on a scooter, so I'm assuming this is possibly their house. >> Okay. And he was kind of agitated. The guy with no shirt. >> While the police questioned the man, he boldly kept on giving flimsy and lame excuses, probably thinking it would let him off the hook. >> He was somewhat agitated. Yeah. Another gentleman here told, you know, he wasn't angry, but he was distressed. And he said the blood on his face was because of the person he was trying to help. And I don't know if they hit that person because they were crossing the street or if they came out of the car. We just saw the body as we went by. >> He came out of nowhere. And it's not his fault at all. At all at all. >> So you're coming So you're coming this way. >> Coming this way. >> Which lane were you in when he was here? >> This way. >> You were in like the middle. >> I I I came across and then was in this lane. >> Okay. >> And it it I don't know which which vehicle it was. I don't know. I I I I I don't blame I don't I don't blame guilt. I I I don't >> I don't know who's deeply was in between each, but I I thought I saw what and >> I'm just saying I thought on the premise of I was in a almost near accident last year, >> but it was more of a I didn't want to be here type of thing. And I I'm going to save you the spiel for that. But um I thought it was a white car to I thought I was able to control it a little bit, but it just wouldn't let me turn it. It It wouldn't let me turn it. >> So you're coming on the road. You got the new Rancho Shocks. >> Rancho Shocks. I was at 45 mph. I think this is like 35 25. >> Let's step over here so that the medic can get through. >> Is he Please tell me if he's okay. Like is there >> They're working on it. >> Is there a heartbeat? >> They're working. I was in I was in I was in coma for 28 days. I know. I know. I was in a coma for 28 days last year. >> How come you're in a coma? >> I from this instance. I was in Ravensdale and I decided to let go. >> I was in a coma because I didn't want to be here anymore. >> Okay. >> And and I know that's contradicting because of this occurrence, but no. That >> Where'd you go to high school? >> I went to Toma. So >> yeah, I didn't graduate. I was in the open doors program. I'm I'm in Green River right now. >> Yeah, >> but I'm not justifying any of this cuz >> I know. So So Carson, >> I'm going to go to jail forever and I and I genuinely don't know what occurred for it to hang to the right. >> It hung to the right. >> Help me understand. So Carson, you're driving this way. You pass the car, right? And you did that just to like feel the feel the uh new suspension >> they to an extent they they were going >> five under. And so I decided impulsively to act and go around them cuz I didn't see a buildup of cars in front of the third car. But in reality it was it was two cars that I passed and then this occurred. >> So what did you see? >> So we were heading down in the Volvo from this way. Um all I kind of saw is um the truck kind of uh hit something in the rear and uh started spinning around and there was a lot of smoke was hurled into the ditch. Fire kind of started and uh me and my friends just pulled over there, ran to uh help people out of the truck. Um there was four people uh I think the guy in the green shirt and baseball cap, the shirtless guy, and then his uh I think he said it was his girlfriend, the the other lady. And then there was also a African-Amean dude who uh got out of the car as well. He hopped over the fence that way and I think he I mean I don't see him around anymore. But >> okay, >> I don't know who was the driver. Um it sounds like it could either be the shirtless dude or I don't know if the guy who fled flighted cuz he was driving or I don't know. >> Okay. >> And and from what I heard it or from what I saw >> he was not injured. It's not his blood. >> I I I'm not even going to say I'm sorry, dude. I tried, but he said that he was going about 50 mph when he hit the Is that okay? >> He just said he was not when the pedestri >> No, I'm for sure going to jail cuz No, I'm going to No, no, I'm going to No, I'm done. I'm done. >> I'm I I I respect you, Joe. My name's Carson, but I don't know what the happened to hang have it hang right. I passed a vehicle. Yes, I was impulsively passing a vehicle. I don't know what the made it hang right. sure you're okay. >> I'm okay, but I'm Oh my god. I'm saying goodbye cuz >> that's a I think we're good. >> I'm not doing that. >> No. >> The suspect kept up with the unnecessary explanations. Unknown to him that his antics would ultimately lead to his downfall. He was high on the wheel and the officers could see it. There was no escaping paying the price for his actions, at least not when someone had lost his life in the crash. >> Help me understand. So, you're going this way. You you passed the car. Were you still passing the car when the kid stepped out on the road? >> No, I was fully in this lane. I was >> I Let's just say >> Can we do that a little bit >> in into perspective? Let's say I passed right there. I passed right here, got into this lane, and something occurred for the truck to not continue in the direction that I had. >> Okay. So, were you were you still here? Were you coming back? >> No, I was in this lane. >> Okay. He's already back. Okay. >> So, you're you're in the right lane. You pass. You get back in the right lane. >> Okay. on the retrospect of me understanding cars just recently cuz this is my >> my last truck. I got into a car accident last June. >> I didn't understand the full aspects of a truck. >> Okay. >> Maybe it lost the sense of control over the speed. I don't know because it hasn't in the sense in the recent past in the late past. I've had it since February. >> Okay. Yeah. So when So what went wrong with the truck? What are you talking about there? >> It it hung right. I tried >> to keep it narrow and it it locked. It locked right. >> Okay. And then what happened from that point? What happened when it locked right? >> He was >> Where was he? >> He was here in my truck just invented whatever vehicle was. >> So he So he went he was on the shoulder here on the on the on the on the scooter. >> This poor kid on the scooter. >> Okay. He was coming here and he was just around in the car and just at the same time >> is when it hit and I'm assuming it's him first or the car first. >> The car first. >> You hit the car. Okay. So you hit the car. >> I'm assuming I don't know. >> And you probably passed like this. >> So what I'm assuming is is if this is the vehicle. >> Okay. >> Came here and she was in between it cuz that's what I saw. He was on the right of my passenger. >> So So this is the car in front of you, right? I just want to make sure I understand what you're telling me. >> No, it's not. >> I had to relearn how to walk. >> Be really hard. >> Please tell me there's a heartbeat because >> they're working with them. They're doing what they can. >> And you said you you saw like something >> I >> back there. I I saw the truck kind of merge back into the right lane and then collide with something and then just um the the axle fell off and then the truck just started hurling and then spun around into the ditch. >> Okay. >> Do you have dash cam in your car? >> I do not. >> No. >> So, Carson, help me help me with this though. >> Do you mind standing up for me, bud? >> I'm sorry. >> I know. So, this is the other car, right? This is you. Did you end up sideswiping the car? >> No. >> No. Okay. Not in any demeanor. >> Okay. So, what did happen then? >> I was coming down this way and there was, as I said, two or three cars in front of me. They were going five under. So, you passed them on the left. >> So, impulsively, I passed them on the left. There was no immediate difference in the vehicle on the left. There was no car coming. As soon as I got to the right, it just decided to hang. >> Okay. Okay. >> So, did you hit another car first or the scooter first? This is This is the As long as I didn't hit him first, this is the only thing I heard. I I thought it was white out of the impulse of like it happened. This was the first car, I guess, that I hit. >> Okay. >> But I was on the premise of coming into the lane. >> Were you fully on the shoulder at the time? >> No, I wasn't even in the That's what I'm >> That's what I'm frustrated about. It's cuz I was So, were you with friends? >> Yes, I had my girlfriend in the passenger seat and my two buddies in the back. Yes, they're right down the road. >> They're down there. >> Yes. >> I I don't know what it It happened so quick. I don't know what occurred. It It wouldn't let me turn left. >> Okay. Um >> I like I just came from the river like >> Yeah. Yeah. So, how long we at the river? >> 2 hours. 3 hours max and we Yes, we drank a couple twisted teas. Like I'm not going to I'm not hiding from that. >> I know you seem to be very honest with me. >> I don't know what the occurred in the I just bought it in in February from Bubba. That's That's what I got. I have his exact >> Is it in your name yet? >> It is in my name. Yes. >> Okay. All right. Do you have the keys on you? >> They're in the I got out. I decided I'm going to leave it where like I >> The man continued playing the victim card without realizing that nothing he did would change the fact that he got his hands dirty. >> I'm done. >> So >> I'm done. >> Did you How many twisted teas do you think you had? >> Four. >> Four. >> Okay. >> But this is over the span of 2 three hours. >> Yeah. So do you know what time you started drinking >> roughly >> specifically? No. But 2 3 hours ago. >> 2 3 hours. Do you know about what time it is right He contacted me at 1:30 and then we got together about 2:00 and then headed here about 2:30. >> Okay. All right. Um around 2:00 2:30. All right. Uh and you drove straight from there to here. Did you make any stops along the way? >> No, I I came I came from my house in Pebble Creek, Maple Valley, picked up my friend who was also my coworker. >> Okay. >> I don't neighborhood and then my friend came we went back to my house. My friend Guam Gou, I I forget the legal standard of his name. He's Muslim. Came to our house. We d then drove from here all the way to the Maple Valley. I don't know the name of that park field or anything. That's where we went. And then we were just on the way back from there that >> Okay. >> And then I ruined a road. Oh my god. >> Hey, careful with the ditch. Careful. Careful. >> I'm sorry. I'm just like >> so cursing. >> Other than the alcohol, did you like smoke any? >> No. >> No. >> I mean, >> when was the last time you did? >> This morning. I I >> I'm not going to justify any of my actions. >> It sounds like you're being honest. >> I I don't want to lead you into a spectrum. >> That's good. >> I I go to sleep with a lot of things. >> Yeah. >> I smoke. >> Okay. >> Yes. >> But no, that was not the occurrence for this. I I genuinely don't know what >> felt the need to occur in the 1500 to No. >> So I sound like I sound like an idiot and I don't want to do that. No. >> Sound like someone who's been through a traumatic incident. >> No, don't be nice. Like >> that is what that is what this is, right? >> What do you smoke when you smoke? >> I just smoke. That's it. like indacica, sativa, >> regardless of I I'm not one to to jump into those boundaries. >> Okay. >> No, I'm not tired like >> Yeah. >> Did you have shoes in the car? Like, did you have shoes when you're driving? >> I had slippers, but I decided to climb out and help the kid. >> Yeah. Okay. She had slippers on. >> This is not This is not This is This is not okay, >> right? This is never how you think it's going to go, right? When you get behind the wheel. So, Carson, I want to make sure I have your name written down. You don't have your ID. >> Just give me a second. I'm going to write it down. You'd like to watch the video. >> Are you involved in this? >> No. >> I seen you right now. >> I don't know. >> No, I don't need your justification. >> I've seen you right now. >> I don't know what we can do. >> I don't know. >> Can you just give us some space? Thank you. I am >> I'm scared, dude. I want He's getting help. He's getting help. >> I'm not concerned about myself. This is ridiculous. >> I know. >> This is ridiculous. No. >> Oh, I know you're trying to be pleasantly nice, but this is >> uh Carson, are you willing to consent to voluntary field sobriety's house? >> Yes. >> Okay. All right. Just give me a second. 75, can I have another unit come stand by me for sust? >> Not right now. We're okay over here. >> Um, >> all right. So, do you wear glasses or contacts? I I do technically have a few checkered glasses, but it's only for in the sense of driving. Yes. >> For driving. >> Not necessarily for but >> not for I got them for baseball. >> Okay. >> So, when you're driving, you don't need to wear glasses. You can see fine. >> They didn't tell me I need to, but in the sense of >> What's your vision? >> 2020 necessarily, but it was very minuscule. >> I'm not trying to justify. >> So, were you wearing glasses or contacts today? I just came back from the river and I have not worn contacts or cold. >> Okay. Do you have any medical conditions that affect your ability to walk or to balance >> to an extent? Yes. I have metal throughout my spine, right leg, and >> head. I know the head doesn't matter, but yes, >> I see I see your scars. Yeah. >> I'm not trying to justify. >> I know you're not. You're just giving me honest answers. >> An officer began to conduct a field sobriety test on the suspect. It didn't take much time before they realized that he was under the influence. The man continued the back and forth with the police officers until it dawned on him that there was no going back. >> So, do you live with your parents? >> Yes, I live with my father. >> All right. And I just want to make sure I have all the information. So, as far as any or alcohol, you drink the horrorish twisted te? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> And I casually smoke on the sense of >> I'm I hate it cuz I don't want to just >> What time did you today? >> It's like in the morning. I took a bath every morning because >> like what what time did you finish? >> 11:30. >> 11:30. >> Yes. I I'm not trying to justify it. >> And how how much do you think you smoked? >> Was one I don't know. >> One and a half joint or a bowl or >> a dab? You know? >> Yeah, I know what a dab is. Okay. >> Is it one half dab? >> Okay. >> I I I don't want to sound like I'm justifying anything. >> It doesn't sound like that to me, man. >> All right. So, so Carson, right now you're under arrest for DUI, potentially vehicular assault or homicide. >> So, I can say goodbye. Yes. >> Can I tell my girlfriend the number to call? She She doesn't have a home. >> Okay. >> Just tell her. >> I know. I understand. >> I I I understand that. Go ahead and have a seat. Put this on before we forget. >> Okay. >> So, right now you're under arrest for DUI. We're investigating a potential vehicular homicide. >> I completely understand the DUI. >> So, you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in a court of law. You have the right at this time to talk to a lawyer and have him present with you while you're being questioned. If you cannot afford to hire a lawyer, one will be appointed to represent you for question if you wish. You can decide at any time to exercise these rights and honestly questions or make any statements. We're also audio and video recording. Yes. >> Do you understand each of these rights I've explained to you? >> Yes. >> Having these rights in mind, do you wish to talk to us now? >> I just wish you've already heard what I've had to say. I'm not justifying anything. an accident occurred. I I I it hung right. Whe whether anybody wants to believe what they want to believe, yes, I was in the sense of intoxication, but it locked it. It locked, right? I I know what that means. >> Do Do you feel intoxicated, Carson? >> No, I perfectly feel okay to drive a vehicle to to communicate with my work, to act at work. I'm not trying. It just sounds stupid because they're just going to take it as intoxication justification. I'm I don't know what happened. It locked right. Can you please give my loved one the number to call and get the All right. Give me a moment here. You have a medical day. >> They're still working on them. >> I know we were saying that we just I'm telling you the truth. Just want to be okay. >> Yeah, they're doing what they can. >> Upon hearing the news about the pedestrian, the suspect became hysterical. But his reaction seemed more self- serving than sympathetic. >> What's that? >> Somewhat okay. >> Uh, no. record. You believe that? I don't know what occurred. I passed somebody. Yes. But I don't know why it locked to the right. >> Know whose car that is? >> I I don't I've only been with the drivers. >> Okay. After doing it, >> looks like probably back over, drifted over, hit that like swerve this way, hit it, and that's what kicked in that way. >> That is what he said. He came back over, he drifted right. >> Yeah. >> Like then hit the kid. >> Mercedes. >> Yeah. He doesn't know if he get the kid or the Mercedes first. >> I think the Mercedes is parked this way. >> I can he sir, I can tell you >> I saw the kid in between >> between the cars. >> Not at a not like I when I saw him, he it wasn't in an impact zone. It was in a like [sighs] I'm not going to justify a triangle to you, but in the wider part of a triangle. It sounds stupid. I don't know what occurred it to hang to the right and now my life is gone because of I'm sorry. I don't know made it hang right. Everything was supposed to be fine. Everything [clears throat] I'm not I'm not I'm not throwing blame in any way. I made a mistake to to to pass a vehicle when it occurred to have a different outcome.
