Shots fired. Shots fired. Front of HQ. >> Police officers are trained to expect the unexpected, but even the best preparation cannot prevent every danger. What really happens when law enforcement officers get ambushed? >> How are you? >> Oh, Jesus Christ. Please, back up. >> Oh, yeah. >> Back up. Back up. Back up. Are you okay? >> I'm just lightheaded. >> Are you okay? Are you okay? >> Let's go. >> Come on. Come on. Please. Let's go. >> He's got a light. >> It's a home invasion and I lost. >> I got one in. And y'all about to do me dirt. >> This is what it is. >> You need to check them. No, you need to check them. >> You good? Trying to get >> Yeah. Okay. >> Here are several instances when cops get ambushed. Starting with the case of this suspect who thought that opening fire on a police officer would be his ticket to freedom. >> Guys, I got shot to the Diamond Hotel. >> Diamond Hotel. >> On December the 2nd, 2023, Houston Police officers from the Midwest Patrol Division responded to a burglary investigation on the 7,000 block of Harin Drive. What seems like a routine case would soon turn into one of the most dangerous confrontations they had ever faced. As Sergeant Mauricio Valet searched behind a building, he might have assumed the suspect had fled the area. Little did he know that assumption would prove to be a grave miscalculation. The suspect had other plans. He launched a surprise ambush, firing multiple shots at Valet's vehicle. However, Valet refused to surrender. He returned fire, forcing the suspect to flee. A brief escape that would ultimately lead to a dead end. Despite his injuries, Valet still managed to do exactly what was needed. >> Guys, I got shot. Guys, I got shot. Come over here. I got shot. Pull me a tourniquet. Pull me a tourniquet. >> Turn to get me up. He ran that way. S. He ran that way south. Turn to get me up. Hey, tourniquet me up. >> Turn to get me. >> Davis, >> Davis, turn to get me. Where'd you get hit? Both arms and legs. Get my legs. Turn and get me. >> Was it him? >> Yes. Turn and get me. >> I got you. I got you. >> All right. I shot him. He was wearing a black hoodie. >> Hey, get on the radio and listen. >> Black hoodie. Okay. >> And gray khaki pants. Okay. >> Black hoodie. Grape khaki pants. And he's been shot. >> He's been shot. >> He's been shot. >> Southbound. Southbound through this alley. There was a female with him. Get up high. [Music] >> All right, guys. >> You're good. You're good. >> Go get him. Go get him. >> I got you. I got you. You're good, sir. >> At this point, the tables had turned. The man who had tried to take an officer's life was now fighting for his own just around the corner. Come on. Come on. >> Somebody else put some gloves on so we can do another. All right. You got enough chest compressions, brother. Show them where the wounds are. Hey, uh, Mario, start doing chest compressions, bro. He's got one in his bottom abdomen where our bullet is sticking out from. You're getting ready chest compression out. >> You got another set of gloves. >> Plastic gloves. Come here. Hold these two lights. Give them like He's got he's got he got GSW on the bottom of his abdomen and he's got one in his chest right under his sternum. >> We haven't cut the rest of his clothes off. He got >> There's some shears right there in the over here. >> Oh, you got >> Yeah. Yeah. Get some out of here. >> Yeah. Start start cutting his pants off. >> We know he got shot in the chest right on your sternum and he got shot in the stomach. >> Through the alley. I don't know which way he went. Sorry. >> Look for the >> Mike. There's some shears right there in my med bag. Uh front pocket. Front pocket. >> Even as the officers performed CPR to save his life, it became clear that his choices had sealed his fate. Meanwhile, Valet's colleagues worked tirelessly to stop the bleeding from his arms and legs. In the end, the suspect passed away at the scene while Valet was rushed to the hospital. If you thought this ambush was bold, wait until you meet this guy who decided to take his fight directly to the police station. >> Shots fired. Shots fired front of HQ. >> On October the 5th, 2024 in Santa Monica, California, store security flagged down a nearby officer to report a robbery. A man had pushed an employee to the ground and fled with a box of kitchen knives. The box was later recovered, but one knife, an 8-in chef's knife, was missing. A few hours later, the suspect, later identified as 28-year-old Dea Abdelhadi Hallebear, marched straight to the front doors of the Santa Monica Police Department. He was calmly told by an officer to wait as he handled an unrelated matter. Hallebear seemed compliant until he wasn't. And at this time, no one knew that the missing knife was about to turn up in the most shocking way possible. >> You were nervous. >> Yeah, it was. Get on the ground. >> What happened next was inevitable. The officer, cornered and injured, was left with no choice. >> Hit on the ground. >> Get on the ground. >> Shots fired. Shots fired. front of HQ. >> HQ. >> I got one at gun point. Guns facing northbound uh semi ambulance. >> At this point, Hale lay mortally wounded as officers worked to save his life as they waited for paramedics to arrive. But the damage was already done. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The wounded officer was eventually taken to hospital and made a full recovery. While Haleb brought the ambush to a police station, this next guy decided the parking lot was just as good a place to make his stand. >> Hey. Hey. >> Okay. >> No. >> On August the 6th, 2021, a woman on her way home from work found herself in a situation no one ever wants to face. >> 911 emergency. >> Hi, I'm currently getting followed and I'm going to drive to the police station. >> Okay. How far away are you? I'm like 3 minutes away. I'm on Mojave Boulevard near your wings stop. >> Okay. What kind of car is following you? >> It's a Toyota. An older Toyota. All black. >> Do you have a license plate number? >> I can't see it. They're like tailgating me. >> Okay. Was there some type of road rage incident or what happened? >> I don't know. Like I I they've been following me since the freeway. I don't know if I cut them off or anything. I don't know. I just >> Oh, okay. >> Yeah, they've been following me since the freeway. >> Okay. And every turn I do, they follow me. >> Okay. Have they done anything to you or said anything to you? >> No. >> And it's an older model black Toyota. Is it a truck or sedan? >> It's a sedan. >> And it's a female driver. >> It's a male. >> Anybody else in there with him? >> No. >> All right. Have you approached the Hoba Boulevard yet? Okay. Well, you hit Cypress before the or before you quit. I'm sorry. >> I'm on Cypress right now. >> Okay. And he's still behind you. >> Yeah. >> I've been making turns and he's been following me. Every time I switch the lane, he follows me. >> Okay, that's fine. But he hasn't said anything or tried to hit your car or anything like that. Correct. >> No, he's just been tailgating. >> What kind of car are you in? >> I'm in the Volkswagen. The blue one. The Pat. >> A pat? >> Yeah. Uh, I've never been to the police station. Do I just go to the front on New Glad? >> Yeah, just pull right in front of the station. So, on New Glad, you'll make a right and then just pull over where you see the doors. >> Hopefully, he'll just continue on. >> She was advised to head straight to the La Habra Police Station, thinking this would put an end to her unsettling ordeal. However, the stranger, later identified as 22-year-old Matthew Tuan Antran, didn't seem to get the memo. >> Are you there? Are you here already? Yeah, I'm right outside. >> Okay. >> Still behind me. >> Okay. Did he pull over? >> Yeah, >> ma'am. Okay. What is he doing? >> Oh, he's reversing. >> Okay. Is he >> and parking? >> Reversing and parking. >> I have my headlights on. >> Okay, hold on one second. >> Can anyone come outside? Like, I'm really scared. >> I'm I'm calling someone right now. I'll just keep you on the line. Okay. >> Tran parked his car and walked towards the station doors. As the officers approached, they likely anticipated a routine encounter. Little did they know what was about to happen was far from routine. >> Hi. >> Hi. How's it going? >> Good. What's going on here? >> Uh, I'm just seeing somebody right now. >> Okay. Are you with these cars? >> Uh, no. >> Okay. All right. >> Yeah. >> Well, they'll get you in a sec. Okay. All right. This guy. Hey. Hey. Hey. Are you okay? >> No. [ __ ] >> Okay. >> Where you hit? Where are you hit? >> The chest. [ __ ] >> Okay, you're okay. Take a deep breath. Take a deep breath. >> The first officer was hit and went down immediately. But his partner wasn't about to let this slide. >> Drop the gun now. Suspect, drop the gun. Suspect, drop the gun or I'll shoot you again. Drop the gun or I will shoot you again. Drop the gun. Suspect, drop the gun. The gun's facing into the PD. Anybody standing in the inside? >> By the time backup arrived, the officers disarmed Tran and pulled him to safety, but paramedics declared him dead at the scene. If you thought Trans attack was unexpected, wait until you meet this lady who answered a welfare check armed with a knife. >> How are you? >> Oh, Jesus Christ. Please back up. >> Oh, yeah. >> Back up. Back up. Back up. >> Are you okay? >> I'm just lightheaded. >> Are you okay? Are you okay? >> On September the 16th, 2024, Fairfax County Police received a call requesting a welfare check on 33-year-old Sydney Wilson, who was reported to be in an agitated state. Upon arrival, officer Peter Lou likely expected a simple interaction to ensure her safety. Little did he know, the situation was about to take a violent turn. >> Hi, man. I'm Officer Lou. >> The officer continued to knock on the door, trying to make contact, unaware that she had no intention of doing so. After a brief silence, the door opened again, and this time she caught him completely offguard. >> How are you? Oh, >> Jesus Christ. Back up. >> Oh yeah. >> Back up. Back up. >> Oh yeah. Oh yeah. >> Hey man, I got to do it. Please back up. >> Oh yeah. >> Back up. Back up. Back up. >> She was hit three times while the officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The responding officers immediately provided aid until the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department arrived. Sydney was later taken to an area hospital where it was determined that she had passed away. The officer eventually made a full recovery. Then there's this other guy who injured an officer during a mental health call. >> Let's go. >> Come on. Let's go. >> He's got a knife. >> Get that knife out of his hand. >> Get that knife out of his hand. On October the 13th, 2022, Ohio officers responded to a mental health call concerning a delusional male who was in a state of psychosis. Upon arrival, one of the officers recognized the male from a previous incident and decided to take a friendly approach. However, the officers had no idea that they were about to deal with the most unpredictable individual they had ever come across. >> Hi, Tyler. What's going on? Guess you got her hand. All right. Make sure you have no weapon on you. What's going on today? You want me to ask mom what's going on, mom? She saying I I don't know. >> He's delusional. >> Okay. >> He is delusional. >> And you have a history of that? >> No, I don't. >> No, I don't. >> He's a delusional. >> No. >> He had walked to the store and came back and just starting >> just banging on the house. >> Okay. >> And I'm like, you got to get help. >> Why do you think Why were you banging on the house? because she got some like little home invasionist stuff going on and they probably quiet and you can't hear them all the way. >> You think there's someone in the house? >> I mean, they quiet right now. Yes, it's somebody in this house. Yes, it is. And it's not just me. It's a home invasion for real. >> Do you want us to look? >> I mean, you going to have to go through the attic or something. >> So, you're hearing people in the attic. It's >> It's about everywhere. And I'm not playing no more. >> Okay. >> Okay. So, I'm I'm I'm just telling you what it is. It's a home invasion. >> Okay. So that's what it is and it's not me. >> You're scared because you hear people in your house. >> Okay. Yeah, >> I understand that. >> Yeah, that's 100% what it is. >> With prior knowledge of the man's history, the officer attempted to create a sense of familiarity and trust. However, he was so deeply trapped in his own delusions that reason seems impossible. >> Does your mom hear those people? >> Oh, she definitely doesn't act slow. >> So, whoever else acts slow, no, I'm not playing. I'm sorry. I see you grabbing that. Is it me or them? They have a home invasion up in here. Okay. And I'm not playing. >> Okay. >> I'm not playing. >> Well, if you sit down, I'll go look in the attic if you want me to. >> I mean, I'll check with you. You can go ahead. I'm right here. >> Okay. >> Disappear. Reappear. Batman and Robin. What it is? >> I know, but you're in the way. I can't go check. Let >> me check. See if you hear. >> Can you sit here with your mama? >> Go check. See if he's hearing something. Check. >> Can we go with you and stay back here? >> You hear something? >> Y'all hear me all the time? Y'all hear my name outside? Ain't nobody dead. >> But you hear people saying your name. >> They in here and I'm not playing. >> I'm just trying to figure out what's going on, brother. >> I'm telling you, it's a home invasion. >> Okay? >> If it's coming at me and my safety, I'm not playing with nobody. >> Okay? >> If y'all on my side, cuz y'all know I'm not going to lie to you like that. >> Yes. If y'all going at me crazy like that, yes, I'mma be on [ __ ] I'm telling you that as a man to man. >> What do you like to be called? Tyler. >> Tyler. >> I'm telling you what it is. >> You're plain and simple >> is worried about you. >> She's not worried. She's ignoring everything around cuz she trying to get me set up >> cuz you're not doing what you're supposed to be doing. >> I don't feel safe >> with your medication. >> I don't have medication. >> Exactly. You should be on medication. >> No, I shouldn't. >> Yes, you should. You always have been on medication. So you don't hear those people talking on the side right now. >> I've been here with social workers before. >> You don't hear nothing. >> Um >> you're hearing things that aren't here. I hate to tell you that. >> I don't I don't hear anything, man. But we need to go talk to somebody. Okay. >> We're trying to be real with you, dude. I'm trying to be real with you, too, cuz I know you hear them. >> I ain't deaf. >> Tyler, do you want to go to Grand View or Miami Valley? >> Your mother's afraid. I'm She got to be afraid of me. >> Yes. >> Yes. I I I don't feel safe with you anymore. >> Just when the cops thought they might convince him to seek help, he became increasingly convinced of an imaginary threat that only he could see. >> Will you go get checked out for your mom? >> No, cuz I don't need no medication. You can hear these mother. >> I don't hear any. >> You hear them? >> Well, that's part of the medical diagnosis you have. >> This ain't no diagnosis. >> It is. >> Yes. >> I got a black mouth. Miami Valley, Grand View. >> This ain't that no hospital? >> Grand View usually. >> This ain't that cuz I ain't been to no Grand View either. >> Yeah, you haven't been in it probably over a year and a half. >> Yeah, it's been a while since I've been out here and talked to you. But you back to being psychotic again. It's definitely not that. I've never been to a hospital day in my life. >> Yeah. >> I've taken you there. >> I ain't the same one then or something cuz >> You are the same one. I've talked to your mother before. >> But you can't hear nothing else? >> I cannot hear nothing else. >> Okay then. Uncle like that. >> So, can we go to the hospital? They can you can talk to them. If they don't think that anything's wrong or anything, then they're going to let you out. >> Okay. You can hear somebody. >> That's me talking. >> No, you wouldn't. Okay, >> that was me talking. >> So, your mom doesn't hear it. I don't hear it. He doesn't hear it, but you hear it. And I believe that you hear it. Okay. I know that you hear it. All right. Can we go to Grand View and get checked out? >> I'm not going to. >> You got to go. >> We have to go. >> I'm not going to Grand View. If you can hear this female talking in the walls, >> I can't hear her. >> However, the situation began to get even more complicated as his perception of an imaginary home invasion grew more intense. >> I'm not going to grand view over this. Y'all can hear this girl talking and I ain't even trying to tell I'm either, but y'all can hear her like I can. >> Well, what is she saying? >> Y'all can't hear this [ __ ] And she's saying the same thing I'm saying. I don't see how. >> So, you hear her saying the same thing that you're saying? >> Do you sound Do you hear how that sounds a little weird? At this point, it had become clear that their previous encounters and friendly demeanor would not be enough to prevent what was coming. >> Put your cigar out. We're going to go to the hospital now. Okay. Okay. >> Come on, man. Just put your scar out. >> Let's go. >> You got to go to the hospital. >> This is straight up open face. >> I understand. >> Y'all keep playing with me. >> Please stop. >> Your mother is worried about you. >> Please stop. >> So, we going to the hospital. I got it. >> Get that knife out of here. >> Get that knife out of his head. >> Sounds like someone might resist me. >> You hear off my face. >> Stop. >> Drop the knife now. >> Tyler, drop it now. >> Tyler, drop it. >> 333. In the end, he was charged with felonious assault, obstructing official business, and resisting arrest, facing a mandatory prison term of 8 to 12 years.
