I had to just go to the bathroom, but other than that, I'm great. >> I'll I'll try to make this faster, okay? All right, do me a favor. Stand with your feet together just like this. >> No, I have to Okay. >> at your side like this. >> Okay, thanks. >> What I want you to do is follow the tip of my finger. >> You guys, don't look at me. >> These are my These are my bodyguards. >> Of course. Of course. >> I want you to follow the tip of my finger with your eyes and your eyes only. >> I like that he calls them their bodyguards. I appreciate that. So, during this test, um some people call it the eye test. The actual name of it is HTN or the horizontal gaze nystagmus test. During this what the officer is looking for is he's using a stimulus, just something that you hold up in front of a person's eyes. As you move it laterally across, what he's looking for is the involuntary jerking of the eye. So, the normal unimpaired person's pupils move smoothly from left to right. An impaired person, especially impaired on alcohol or other central nervous system depressants, um the movement is jerky because the the muscles of the eye aren't moving um as they're supposed to like they are in an unimpaired person. So, um that's what that officer is looking for as he's moving left to right laterally. Um he's just looking for uh first he's looking for the lack of smooth pursuit. Secondly, he's looking for that nystagmus to be distinct and sustained at maximum deviation. Maximum deviation being all the way over to the side. And he'll hold it out there for a minimum of 4 seconds, a maximum of 30. Um and he will continue to watch that jerking of the eye um that would be consistent with someone with an alcohol concentration of 0.08 or above or more. Um so, that's That's what he's looking for as he's looking going through that and there's there's other clues that he's looking for. He's also looking at bloodshot watery eyes. He's smelling the odor. He's watching her sway. Um lots of different things that this officer's doing.
