medical emergencies oh that's a good end and more cameras that Tyler is a little camera we're taking you back to the heart of the action just lie down for me we're from the ambulance okay there are some new faces I'm happy to be your crewmate I feel like we've bonded and some old friends I'm bad driving yeah is it the fact that I'm faster and smoother than you you're driving's terrible how can I help body mounted cameras record every moment nice deep breaths going to open up smashing to show you what goes on behind closed doors we'll get you right all right you'll be on the front line with the ambulance cruise from West Midlands Ambulance Service I don't need to be a doctor I just need to know what I can do to help as they deal with 3 000 emergency calls each day we see so many people who get told that nasty c word there's so many people can fight it now step inside the ambulance you take care mate thank you oh charcoal gray that was time for this the glove puppet now city was um Brown [Music] city was the bear sweep was the dog Gray colored dog and Sue was the panda did you used to watch um the old prisoner cell blockage no no you tell me you're too young now I'm too young I don't know what you missed classic TV and they used to slam the door and the wall used to shake he'd have one character that was killed and then come back as a different character a few weeks later so what was the name of the musical group in rainbow I don't know Rob Jane and Freddie [Music] it's just coming up to half past seven in the evening and for paramedic Gaz Clark and his Yorkshire raised technician Liam Dale thoughts turn to hot drinks I love tea I love tea what's up Mommy I don't drink tea time why sit down drink it drink squash or cider love tea it's only Yorkshire Tea there is no other kinda tea there's just a different flavor too and it must have made yeah it's totally different to your monkey tea and all that kind of I've never even heard of any other kind of tea you know it's Yorkshire Tea announced but tea time is soon over bus station Wolverhampton Lloyd is one of the services regulars he has epilepsy and mental health issues and has frequent fits which mean the team is often called out to help him [Music] foreign yes how are you feeling today okay hello Lloyd mate you've been in hospital recently Lloyd how long ago you can't tell us all right buddy right Gary and this is Liam all right mate all right what you want to sit up there yeah let's get your setup let's get some water now we can't have anything at the moment no we need to assess him he's fine with no Lloyd well yes yes Lloyd appears to be quite a vulnerable person he does have carers but he's always pleased to see it seems like a really nice person it's just a case of he likes to be rain people if you're gonna have a fit you either have warning signs or you don't now Lloyd says that he doesn't have warning signs at night time Lloyd has live-in carers but during the day he doesn't like spending time on his own as he's worried he might have a fit it's vital Gaz and Liam give him a full checkup to see if he needs a trip to hospital do you think you're able to walk or not yeah yeah let's get you up and onto our app we're only around the corner mate all right yeah all right next is like then yeah hold your legs in on two three you got him I'll just go get the round down I'll go get the ramp thank you medicine at eight o'clock you've got to take it right so this has happened because you haven't had your medication eight o'clock oh it's white here what time is it now uh don't know half sevenish well eight o'clock on my medication issue right let's just get you sat on the bed we can give you a quick check over All Aboard Lloyd that's it you can take your coat off for me mate Liam and Gaz are concerned both for Lloyd's epilepsy and his ongoing mental health issues temperature um yeah indeed that's a great sir keep me safe yeah um do you live on your own you feel called mate is that okay you're a little bit on the cold side I'm chill I'm chill do you drink or smoke alcohol I do I'll get alcohol and I smell my cigarettes you do smoke do you have normal cigarettes or Roll-Ups both Lloyd's blood sugar levels could give Liam and gas a clue as to what might have caused his seizure if they're normal and Lloyd is physically well there'll be no need to take him to hospital panic attack because my heart that's where it looks good at the minute no no yeah of course God bless God bless YouTubers listen to me I need to check your sugars because we need to know if that's caused any problems today that might let you seizure oh all right okay yeah you've had it done before yeah no I don't look no just quick quick please it will be quick promise quick please give me a second all right yeah there you go oh that's it there that's it oh great that's it that wasn't bad was it no whatever the nature of the seizure he's had his vital signs all seem to be back to normal now which means Lloyd won't need a visit to a d he's so serious I am I'm great now yeah right with Lloyd seeming better Gaz and Liam would like him to head home to take his medication but they need to be happy he's capable of taking care of himself when did you last have something to eat oh yeah are we on about dinner time around 12ish or have you had some activities now eight o'clock now roughly what time that was about half past four I had something to eat about six then yeah yeah full works on a plate yep the chicken the depots keep them open staring into his loving guys that's what you need to do very good that look okay absolutely fine lies yeah there was no obvious signs that he'd hurt himself and all these basic observations seemed absolutely fine so we didn't really need to go to hospital as long as we're sure that he's going to be safe even if he's left alone just sling your legs off okay with Gaz and Liam happy they just need to get Lloyd signed off before he can go just a signature on there and with that It's Time to Say Goodbye that's lovely wonderful though it's quite famous within the West Midlands ambulance so especially around the wheel and oil kind of area he's always Pleasant he's always polite and he's one of those patients that you don't actually mind going to you look after that one as well put them both inside your pocket yeah put them inside a pocket so you can zip them up so you've got them yeah that's great thank you no problem you take care mate all right thank you I'll shrunk you under the bottom mate we get you down first foreign I think that's an interesting thing this one piece will make 52 layers watch on mobile devices or the big screen all for free no subscription or fire download really now it's nearly nine o'clock and as their evening shift wears on ambulance crew Hannah Simkins and Michelle McNulty have been called to another job apparently has stroke related symptoms some sort of weakness somewhere anyone who could be having a stroke is a priority call for the ambulance service the patient Joan lives on her own but has a close relationship with her neighbors who frequently help care for her less than five minutes later Hannah and Michelle arrive at her house hello cool I'll try to have a sandwich and enjoyment engineering it's stupid yeah getting stuck in your throat yeah without being bad Hospital yeah all right Joan explains that she went to hospital earlier in the week after collapsing at home she says she's sweating profusely for no reason and feels unwell Tuesday [Music] off jump just relax relax with someone like Joan when she's upset it's just basically about trying to come down to a human level I think it's probably the best way of putting it but sometimes people just need you to sort of hold the hand and say you're gonna be okay everything's gonna be all right just give them some reassurance and just try and you know be be a human with them just try and be sort of a friend to them at that point which was quite overwhelmed by everything and so it's just trying to reassure and calm it down you got an irregular heartbeat yeah she has if you had episodes where you felt sort of dizzy or lightheaded to slow down yeah yeah and Blair you go all like in there you're like see black so you black spots yeah so you felt sick with it Joe yeah Hannah thinks the reason Joan's feeling sick is related to her heart rate it's high fluctuating between 70 and 160 beats a minute when a normal adults would be 60 to 80. my best guess is when you're having those sweats and stuff at night it's probably because your heart rate's going up and then your body starts to sweat okay and when you're feeling shorter breath and stuff like that as well that's probably what's happening and if it goes too high for too long your body decides that it's had enough and it makes you faint I reckon that's probably what's happening okay we're gonna have to pop you back to the hospital down is that all right you're not a nuisance they're just worried about you you'd be the same with them wouldn't you I obviously care about you Hannah and Michelle set about getting Joan into the ambulance right all right John yeah Jones neighbors are some of her closest friends [Applause] yeah no problem they provide a network of support for her one of them Debbie has volunteered to go with Joan to hospital oops [Music] thank you more rice yeah have you got my medical bag Jones you know what I want you to do for me okay on the Notions trust me I am to them me family do all the delford listen to me you know I don't know since then Joni it's not like you're doing it on purpose is he no no being bad can you we'll get you right okay all right yeah have some tissues okay you run down now because you've got the keys anyway let me page was in there it's all right you should have been normal now I'm your problem nobody's problem oh yeah I'm everybody's problems okay just relax for me all right the more relaxed you are the better it will be yeah okay we don't need to get yourself whipped up you're gonna make yourself feel worse Jonah okay you're not a nuisance to anybody if you're new since I've told you trust me it's a very very common theme when patients sort of especially elderly patients think that they're a bird and other people that are around them and a lot of the time do feel like a burden or like you know a drain on their family or in Jones case their sort of neighbors and her friends that were massively massively supportive of her and were fantastic with her but I think from Jones point of view she was seriously grateful for all of their help but at the same time felt really guilty because they've got families of their own she was saying you know they should be looking after them and having a life but they obviously don't mind coming to look after it was a really nice community that she was part of and they obviously think a lot of us she is a very very nice lady done let's go we've known each other a long time then oh yeah we've used you always lived in the road yeah nice that you've got lots of people to look after you down you know Hannah and Michelle have helped to calm Joan down but she's still feeling sick is it sensitive to look at the light yeah it makes me old drone how's that better it's so cute the blue light is a special feature of the ambulance for anyone sensitive to Bright Light to create a more soothing environment moments later they arrive at new Cross Hospital [Music] foreign [Music] wasn't too bumpy was it no she said it was the worst ambulance right she's ever had I don't blame you down it's all right I don't believe anything she says I know she's a fiber I'm next to you there I knew do me a favor and hold on you're a star write down there'll be a couple of bumps as we go down the ramp all right as gentle as we can during perfectly safe and if we don't drop people we like [Music] [Music] foreign pet the dog and build them happy for a cat [Music] I'm tired now I'm gonna kill that cat when I'm gonna I leave a cat alone [Music] I think she lies up asleep all day long and then it's every time I've got my first day shift and I want to get some sleep you decided to them is the moment that everybody needs to fight and play with dressing games I'd run upstairs and run downstairs and the new one is a double pench on your feet yeah he jumps on the bed just double pounce your foot he runs out the room like there's a monster coming please foreign [Music] on a warm Summer's afternoon in the West Midlands super fortnite thank you just let you know we are mobile now paramedic Simon Allen and student paramedic Sam Grosvenor are nearly nine hours into a 12-hour shift I wonder why it's gone like really busy all of a sudden he's up a piece of the q word I think it is Rob the neighbor of a man in his 40s has dialed 999 the patient has uncontrollable stomach pain caused by a potentially life-threatening cyst if it bursts it could be fatal arrively mode activated neighbor Shanice has been looking after him what's your name Buddy Tony Anthony yeah what's happening mate Tony's been having agonizing stomach attacks for at least two years because he has a cyst on his pancreas a gland that lies behind his gut it's been caused by heavy drinking I need start to drink and then I stopped apparently you're waiting operation didn't you yeah it's next week or so another Neighbor comes in to check on Tony okay yeah yeah it's awesome the operation is to remove the cyst which could burst and cause serious infection it's the only way to cure the pain permanently depression any more medication for those as well yeah our screw that squeeze for me squeeze there's your depression like under control at the moment yeah I've got Neighbors have you had any pain relief today yeah how many times nothing left on a scale of one to turn how bad is it uh 12. can you sit back a bit or no would you hurt more if you sit back and these these things that go wherever you go when Tony said he couldn't lie back and it eased off when he when he slouched forward this is an obvious sign of pancreatitis and so obviously because it's quite painful the first thing we had to do was manage his pain through giving pain relief have you had the interlocks before that gas and air yeah okay within 30 seconds we'll start on the interlocks all right let's start with nice slow deep breaths since it's just getting worse so I don't know what the problem is but I've seen the scan yeah the uh three which is my heart as I said usually I get the morphing and then I'm fine the pain is gone but morphine itself can be addictive if you have too much so the crew is Keen to try other pain relief first do you reckon you might be able to live flat for me no no no what you said the mess on me just trying to get comfortable now I I've been I've been able to do late for two days oh yeah if I pop a little needle in your arm then as long as you put something in it to take the pain away from Tony at first we gave him mentinox which is gas and air same females other than going through labor and that wasn't touching it so obviously the main pain relief was going to give would have been morphine which is um a pain relief given through intravenously through a vein to see the operation though you mate that's what you want the surgeon was on the phone yesterday it tried to rushed me along how's it eased off is it even has it taken the edge off at least can you give us a number between one and ten again uh eight about an eight all right just in that spot all right okay Tony's stomach pain might be easing but the crew are taking no chances if the cyst becomes infected or bursts it could cause internal bleeding they need to get him to hospital has it gone completely still there you still have a scale of one to ten though uh I'd still say eight but tone is no stranger to an ambulance it's his second trip to hospital in three days let's get your rewired up [Music] two miles to the nearest hospital I'm far away go to Sandra yeah yeah only still needs pain relief throughout the journey for a much more bearable uh peace yeah that makes sense okay it's done in a job yeah well toes and everything's tingling wait what it does all right but you won't reach here yes to the touch as well okay despite the pain relief Tony is clearly still extremely uncomfortable what about this paint go away they're at the hospital in just under seven minutes [Music] hang on to the guys for a bit if you want yeah [Music] at least for now Tony is in the right place [Music] [Music] this whole Malarkey of getting fit nowadays we actually went to a job because they'd overdone it he'd overdone them running it's badly how this exercise is really bad there's this thing in society Now isn't there about how you look and way to the so much yeah it's there's too much of it it's the media there isn't it like in it these magazines where they put celebrities in them and they're like you know size 12s and they wear like a bikini or something and then like you know they've got like the smallest bit of overhang that they zoom in on yeah and they're like oh so-and-so's let themselves go and you're like really it's terrible [Music] it's Friday night and Hannah Simpkins and Michelle McNulty are on their way to a job when they're re-routed to a higher priority call yeah Tipton for a traumatic bleeding okay [Music] this is the highest priority call out there is which means it could be life-threatening mail it cut his finger on a glass and he's saying that there's two months showing through over what's the one there [Music] hello when Hannah and Michelle arrive at the house the patient Wayne has already had his wound bandaged by his mum Anne-Marie but it's still bleeding heavily unfortunately what you've been doing them Wayne well open public okay let's have a look then sometimes you just do get catapulted into really bizarre situations that you kind of have to just take at face value and go oh okay that was what happened fair enough like I'll take your word for it but it can be really random sometimes shut up oh where is the dog Lottie Wayne's sister's one-year-old Jack Russell is now out of Harm's Way in the garden so Hannah and Michelle can start having a look at Wayne's injury a bit of an awkward spot too keep your hand open but like just burn the top even before somebody not maybe yeah that's a bit normally around the top actually yeah no Wayne can see that you can see the tendon in his finger um which he had presumed was his bone a tendon looks kind of like a little worm almost up their side of your thumbs but I guess at the time if you can see part of you you know your limb or whatever that's exposed it's something that you're going to worry about so I suppose it's a relatively normal conclusion to come to if you still took your thumb in yeah yeah cool what we'll do is we'll clean it up bandage it up yeah I sound right you're in any pain with it Ryan um yeah Wayne can move his thumb and that it's not hurting is good news but Hannah's still worried that he's got no feeling in it and how long has it been Lighting on for um about five minutes okay excuse me Pokemon that's okay I just need to see her fall around it goes can you still scrunch those fingers good I don't have enough's going I know Hannah cleans the wound to prevent infection and will then bandage the thumb to protect it and stop the bleeding but she needs to go gently with her patient some people pass out yeah that's what you probably don't do don't let me look at it because if you do then I'm going to pass out oh yeah don't do that makes matters worse right take a picture of that and then I'll put some water in it bandage it up fully enough Michelle takes the photos to add to Wayne's medical records she then needs to check his blood pressure normally fit them well yeah apart from breaking glasses [Music] Wayne was on his way out to a barbecue when the accident happened but the only place he'll be going today is Hospital [Music] phone him due to the depth of the cut and the fact it's still numb see yourself down there doctors will need to investigate whether Wayne's done himself any permanent damage have a lovely scarf Ace yeah let's go for it [Music] I'll never drink half the glass again still not in any pain or anything no yeah but you can still bend it yeah you say that you are right-handed yeah [Music] Wayne will now be seen by the hospital medical team and receive stitches for the wound to his thumb how many stitches hey [Music] than that I'll say six I've got lower all right paramedic Michael anslow and student paramedic Adam Naylor are back on the road after a quick rest stop [Music] you sort of have to do a lot of bladder training in this job don't near like um you're always dubious of what you're drinking because you know yeah potentially not going to be able to reach at all with it for a long time [Music] I think you just hold it yeah I was desperate the other night on shift and went to a toilet then and the patient didn't have a working light so I had to negotiate with my phone torch um to go to the toilet [Music] travel four nine uh case in Hall green all received we're going to a 64 year old Mayo who's got lower back pain he's called one one but the lick of it and uh it's been upgraded to us it's Sunday afternoon and the crew are on their way to a man with paralyzing back pain it's got so bad he can't even move afternoon hello when they arrive at the address they discover the patient Paul bent over double in agony oh you've got Michael and Adam today what's brought you on to the floor today what's happening Paul who life and son is stuck in the only remotely comfortable position he can he can all right it's a bit raised your heart rate's a bit raised at the moment it's probably because of the pain and you've had what sorry you've had Tramadol two tramadol about three quarters yeah Paul has already had tramadol a prescription painkiller he was given for a slipped disc in the past it took him six months to recover last time he's terrified this is happening again he hasn't moved since five o'clock this morning so it's five o'clock this morning he got up all night okay it's 1pm and 64 year old Paul has been on the floor for 10 hours and hasn't slept a wink all night he managed to get down the stairs on the lounge floor you got from the lounge there it took him about half an hour Michael and Adam need to get Paul's pain under control fast oh it's in your butter is it traveling down anywhere down the leg as well okay have you had any recent like trauma have you fallen or or twing store [Music] with Paul we could see that he was in a lot of pain he was on all fours and he wasn't able to move so we were taking it very seriously the first step to manage the pain is to give Paul gas and air can score the pain it's a 10 out of 10 at the moment is it like is it like a spasm yeah yeah it does sound very much like a sciatica which is irritation of like your sciatic nerve at the moment Paul is in so much Agony that he needs stronger pain relief so we have paracetamol in two forms we obviously have tablet form if you have it via a needle yeah it might give you relief of the pain a bit quicker okay all right there we go then former seal the ellipse nice deep breaths this drawer that's it and breathe out just nice and slowly because if you take it quickly it'll make you feel dizzy and sick I'm gonna be a sharp scratch okay nice and still the intravenous drip will act faster giving Paul more effective pain relief just going to stick all that down and we'll get you some paracetamol straight into your vein then okay right that paracetamol is going in so as much as you can if you can keep your arm like that that's ideal chronic back pain for almost 10 hours the pain is barely subsiding Adam and Michael need to take him to hospital for further treatment how's that pain doing now can you give me another number out of ten seven about a seven it's coming down then do you feel that you you'd be able to to get up or do you still feel like you in too much pain Paul now has to face the pain of moving from his stationary position to get onto the ambulance I don't want you to hurt your knees to see are you sure you're all right doing it like that [Music] all right take a breather if you need to last hurdle fantastic and then trying to do it as carefully as we can but there will be a couple of them [Music] a bit of a clump as we go in all right with Paul in the ambulance the painkillers are starting to take effect and Paul is able to find a more comfortable position you want to give the gas and air a go now you are and see how that does you I don't want to make you too sort of zonked you see to you so nice and slowly on on that one all right [Music] it's critical for Paul to inhale the gas and air properly for it to be an effective pain reliever and a muscle relaxant Paul properly Place yeah the piece if it's not fully in your mouth the error will escape and it won't work as effectively foreign [Music] doctors will now assess poor and hopefully find a remedy for his painful condition [Music] I like working with like people who I've not worked with before because she adds to the mystery of things I can't believe that when we when we first worked together it felt like we've worked together for like years and even that couple that were like oh do you work together all the time and we were like never worked together before she didn't believe us but my big sister now that you're blonde but I don't know yeah foreign who had a seizure in the Town Center went home to rest and spent the evening in the safe hands of his carers luckily for him the paramedics are always on hand to help when he needs it Joan was taken to hospital for tests and kept in under observation for six days doctors have put her chest pain and breathing difficulties down to an ongoing heart condition she's now waiting for a pacemaker and Echo scan luckily for Joan her close neighbors continued to look out for her [Music] Tony who was suffering with an agonizing pancreatic cyst was given further pain relief and sent home the next day he had surgery the following month to remove it and is now on the mend Paul was kept in hospital overnight and given strong painkillers and crutches an MRI scan showed a slipped disc in his back was pressing against muscle and nerves causing the excruciating pain surgery Then followed and finally he's now back on his feet [Music] Wayne who cut his hand open stopping the dog from jumping through the window went to hospital for treatment and as Hannah correctly predicted needed eight stitches my fifth night shoe from the bounce yeah and I was absolutely hanging and I was at a certain traffic lights be for my horn thinking this I was going to turn on and it took me a good five minutes to realize I'm not an ambulance there's poor bloke that was in front of me I'm keeping my horn I think when the design well just follow me hole [Music] thank you
