don't worry it's okay let's go with me let's go we're back on shift inside the ambulance got a job do you need me to get in the back you might have to stop with more medical emergencies oh that's a good end and more cameras that Tyler is a little camera we're taking you back to the heart of the action just lie down for me we're from the ambulance okay there are some new faces I'm happy to are you crewmate I feel that we've bonded and some old friends I'm bad driving yeah is it the fact that I'm faster and smoother than you you're driving's terrible how can I help body mounted cameras record every moment nice deep breaths going to open up smashing to show you what goes on behind closed doors we'll get you right all right you'll be on the front line with the ambulance cruise from West Midlands Ambulance Service I don't need to be a doctor I just need to know what I can do to help as they deal with 3 000 emergency calls each day we see so many people who get told that nasty c word there's so many people can fight it now step inside the ambulance you take care mate all right thank you thank you what did Santa bring it to be honest with you I've been wearing a majority of the presents beforehand because the thing was I'd gone out and brought them I only had one surprise which was a charm for my bracelet my graduation bracelet but the dressing gown then went in wash on boxing day and my mother has now put it on the high heat in the tumble dryer so this nice fluffy dressing ad is now melted together literally she's mounted the fibers and she just keeps walking past me and calling me sure on the street because I literally look like a sheep it's all like bubbly like a sheep that's just been like Sheen yeah so what you got for Christmas was your dressing gone wrecked yeah did you get anything nice for Christmas I got exactly what I wanted what's that socks what kind of socks really sucks no just some plain boring I take plain and boring obviously you get when people buy you socks as a gift they're usually quite funky aren't they so I've got some superhero ones okay some Game of Thrones ones no never mind what I've got some adult coloring books you know the ones oh well when you said adults and no never mind then yeah no it sounds even worse it's not like I've got some adult coloring books it's a chilly late December evening and paramedics loss horribin and Dave Grantham are on their way to a patient who's called for help from a City Center Hotel we've got Muhammad 23 year old male with upper ABDO pain rib cage area in the hotel so there we go the big building too all right there's the doors [Music] thank you Merry Christmas 23 year old Muhammad was about to head out for the evening with his friend Samaya when he started to feel unwell hello how are we doing how are you mate he's in Mohammed is it my name's Dave I've got I did have Vlogs with me as well she's on her way off what's happening today then buddy there you go Liz told you she's with me what's happening sorry okay so you've had the paint for about a week whereabouts are we looking on top of your tummy right into the left-hand side okay have you seen your doctor I haven't you ever seen anybody about it no seriously it wasn't as bad today it's just been getting really good okay so I've reached this point what kind of pain is it is it it's like a sharp stabbing a sharp pushing dude okay if you could score out of 10 for me if zero was no pain and ten was the worst pain you've ever felt you'd be a dollar ten yeah yeah plan is then rather than giving you oral paracetamol it's going to take quite a while for it to work Leslie's gonna pop a needle in your arm and we're going to give you some more RCS into your vein it works much quicker okay he was saying that he couldn't move from the position he was in obviously from our point of view we need to have a look and see what we what we can find with his ABDO um before moving him though he wanted to try and control his pain okay should actually hand for me brush fingers that's it sharp scratch coming up what we'll do is we'll give you some gas in there while we're setting up the paracetamol that will just help get into your system and then the paracetamol we'll run that through have you ever had this before and I'll pop that there all right and then if you have it with this arm can you hold it yourself yes okay nice big brush nice deep breath in and then hold it for a couple of seconds before breathing out that's the stuff this will probably take about 10 minutes to run through okay if we run it through slowly it helps it works better and then trip up to hospital [Music] you're gonna be able to roll onto your back so I can have a look at your tummy try to I mean use as much as the gas as you need to take these off for you no onto your back you're facing up that's it yeah yeah come on your head when you lie back [Music] yeah anything right around the back here and this side here no and any pain further down if I come across here talking to Muhammad obviously you've got pain in his abdomen which from the history we took there wasn't any obvious cause for his abject pain it could be gallstones it could be muscular but without attending hospital and having a scan or further blood tests we wouldn't be able to say exactly what it was do you have any shoes then buddy how are you on your feet do you have to walk down or if you can stand we'll start making our way down we've mounted the pavement and we're right in front of the door it's like red carpet service you can keep the keep the gas in there and relying on to you while you're walking you all right if any time you need to stop buddy let me know okay have you got your key to get back in here okay there's a lift as well look at that 'll sit down on a chair on the bed yeah that one's yours now sweeter bring your bum right on the bed you're a big fella and you're going to want to bring the back doors if not it's tall isn't it now the pie that you've got is it coming down or is it staying as it is okay if the pain changes when we're on the right hospital let my colleague know and we'll stop we can give you something else all right it's not a problem despite having two different types of pain relief just after they set off Muhammad appears to take a turn for the worse we're not too too far from New cross so couple of minutes and we should be in use that gas and air body as much as you need to all right [Music] we're here if it is anything we can give him something before we go into Ina yeah okay what are your thoughts on all theme we can give you before we take you in if you want yeah we'll take Muhammad into a and e they give him the strongest painkillers they carry [Music] okay [Music] so this will start to work within 60 seconds hopefully and it might take about 20 minutes to reach its peak right pass me your hand mate it's all right put your hand on your tummy for me that's it just relax [Music] okay [Music] right we'll see if that starts to kick in and then we'll get you off with his pain now a little more bearable Lars and Dave can take Muhammad into a and e [Music] H so what are your thoughts on our gentlemen then I think he's called obviously today because it got unbearable yeah which is fair enough and it was unbearable Hospital can find out what's up with him [Music] I think that's an interesting thing this one piece will make 52 layers watch on mobile devices or the big screen all for free no subscription required download vli now [Music] it's the maltesers no don't give me any look you know you're not efforts to lose my famous stone for how many years and you've always had to lose this Stone that's what I'm saying I've still got my famous stone to lose and you have I'm not helping when you give me maltesers I like packet of crisps and pickled up new juice poured over the top I used to put sour cream into a packet of plain crisps yeah that is weird I'm quite normal compared to you [Music] is this your milkshake yes does it bring all the boys to the yard I haven't tried maybe it will [Music] all right foreign and a busy Saturday shift for crewmate Stuart punter and Charlene Bevin oh outside house of Fraser [Music] held in a mile has fallen head injury when trying to get up and walk keeps falling again patience is insistent and Amber is not called but Paul is Paula states that there's no way the patient Could Be steady on his feet as he keeps falling when trying to get up from the floor just four minutes later the crew arrive in Wolverhampton City Center [Music] do you want to just open the back of back up straight on their patient is older Ken he was out shopping alone when he had a fall right let's have a little look at your sweetheart yeah you've did your head a bit of a bun Ken on this stump here and what's happening with your legs well I keep giving away okay and it's never happened before no no right let's get you out this cold it's only seven degrees outside so Charlene and Stewart want to assess Ken in the warm it is chilly out here isn't it it is just a bit [Music] we'll do some checks on you and then we'll see where we go from there and how does that sound can I have a little failure wrist my darling are these from your Falls no no that's the only one from before could you pop your jacket off so we can do your blood pressure yeah nice you said there's no dizziness when you fell it was just your legs giving away did you feel your legs going no no it's just that uh something gets Wild on that okay and how many times would you say you fell the smaller that's about the sixth time okay have you ended up on the floor each time yeah yeah do you normally fall over six times in a day no no that's the first time I've done it your blood pressure's okay it's a little bit High 175 75 92. this is a little bit less than that okay well with a fall and a head injury I'm not surprised to eat up a little bit okay can spin your legs on him you okay sweetheart swing yourself that way a little bit more there you go you've got no pain anywhere okay [Music] apart from that way apart from where where is the pain in that leg that face like a knife in the knee okay and you've never had that before right I'm gonna have a quick tidy up if you're ahead so it's just a bit of water on a bandage all right let's have a look any pain when I'm touching again no no pain at all it's just an egg okay you can it's a hell of an egg on there have you got anybody at home Ken do you live with anyone at home not only by myself you live on your own right Ken you've done a nice big bump to your head yeah okay and Kenny isn't it it isn't a small one you've got a nice big egg on there as well okay and it's got a cut to it right obviously we can clean it up a little bit but my main concern is if I was to let you go now there's nothing saying that you're not going to hit the floor again okay with that big lump on your head and there's no one to watch you at home my advice would be going to the hospital and get checked over I don't know but how long we're gonna read over there I can't unfortunately I don't know we've just been and it's not that bad Oh no you're not ecstatic to go to the hospital but I'd prefer you'd go there and get checked out well you're not gonna you're not gonna let me not to go to the hospital I mean you can refuse Ken if you refuse it's against my consent so if anything was to happen to you okay I can't be held responsible you need to prove to us that you're going to be safe to be left on your own how long is it going to take him then I couldn't tell you how long's a piece of string well that's it depends what they want to do with you wish to walk off the back of here and you need was to go there's nothing saying that next time you're not going to end under a buzz while she's walking over a road okay and I don't want that to happen so that's why I'm advising you to go to a e yeah we'll take you I know we're in your daily plan sweetheart okay well you can obviously Taxi I can find somebody okay Ken was adamant that he didn't want to go to the hospital we find this quite a lot with the older generation I can understand why he didn't want to go to hospital it was Christmas time it's usually really busy with the winter pressures in A's we have to use our powers of persuasion quite a lot and in this case it worked and who have you called Ken was that your niece did you say Alicia any show you coming up the hospital to you yeah yeah when I get there okey-dokey do it used to be in the RAF and find some common ground with Ken to take his mind off his trip to hospital do you national service Ken which branch were you in first or cook did you enjoy it yeah did you go anywhere Sunny no I never went to have the concert half an hour after picking Ken up off we go thank you finally they're on their way normally Ken you can walk on I did yeah fine yeah it's the first time this has happened this floor okay and just a short while later Ken is delivered to hospital [Music] here tests can be run to try to get to the bottom of his Falls [Music] it was but say when took some convincing he's a bit of an understatement I think he even said at one point didn't he you're not going to let me go home here trouble is when they've got capacity you're a bit stuck because I can't force you physically you can't throw you in the back and make off with you but you need to go and he knew my thinking he's out of art that he would fall again [Music] paramedics Loz horobin and Dave Grantham are on shift together in Willen Hall a New Year's Eve is fast approaching are you all night doing it yeah I remember was it last year I worked New Year and um come midnight me and my crewmate were just driving back to station and I bought like two party poppers yeah so come midnight we pulled a party Papa and I got a happy New Year and then we put the party popper away and just carry on driving it's so weird a lot of people say oh you're not working Christmas are you and you just think well fireplace and ambulance don't stop so if anything happens you're gonna want someone to respond yeah sorry it's Christmas of course no one's going to come to you yeah do you know what day it is I'm sorry but we are now close yeah 27th their next job has just come through uh so female of 60 MS patient and able to use feet not been eating has chest type yes back pain feels weak can't touch too impotment show a bit of everything the patient's husband called the ambulance her son is waiting for the crew armed with his mum's extensive medical notes hi you're right so I've just had four of those as represented by the lady okay love me thank you that's the top of the stairs in the bedroom okay hello hello is it Michelle is it hello my name's Lars this is Dave hello you okay can I pop the light on is that all right um we had quite a lot of information on our notes so what's been happening today start from the top right what it is I've got to Multiple Sclerosis yep my feet won't do as they're told I don't know where my feet are half the time so normally do you walk about with sticks or a waddle about with Mystic yet um of light I've been absolutely unable to get up off the floor this morning I got my head against the door and I thought this is where people die how long have you had DMS for um I was diagnosed in them 2001. okay so long enough so you know your condition quite well and yes yeah if you're feeling poorly or if you get an infection or anything yeah well what we're going to do Michelle we're going to check you over yeah um and have a look at your blood pressure and things um we need to get around you if we can um we can move this chair and we can probably get to your arms and things then is that all right we're good at furniture removal as well Michelle thank you for the sandwich it's okay I've always had nothing but some care and compassion with thee and oh we try our best you do wonderfully yeah it's going in your ear sweetie these just your appointments are they yes okay [Music] um you do have a temperature which is up quite a lot so you've got infection somewhere um but it could be in your tummy so I think it's best if we pop you to the hospital yes Michelle was off her legs which is obviously a course of concern for us as normally even though she's got the MS she's able to get about so the temperature could have potentially been a cause of why she wasn't able to mobilize we need to take Michelle to hospital so she could get further tests to see what was causing the problem now um we need to get you down the stairs Michelle so if we give you a leg and a wing from the top and we've got a small chair so we'll get you on that and we'll whiz you down should we stand together do a little twiddle and then we'll sit down how's that sound okay if you're onto the back of my elbows well yeah that's good anywhere you want oh there we go nearly just come a little bit warm towards me and bend your knees Michelle we've got here's right there thank you thank you okay Michelle's husband Dave will go with her in the ambulance it's like Tetris in the back of these gonna have a seat on that one [Music] and then we'll fasten you in Michelle okay thank you [Music] uh last loss yeah it's Laura if I'm in trouble I get shouted Laura most of the time we just get cold alive yeah I answered the most things to be honest how long have you two been married then imagine it yeah I'm happy thank you foreign [Music] happy birthday for today didn't plan this then did we it's not the birthday item we should have Michelle I think we're here [Music] Michelle will be taken into a and e where they can investigate further to get to the source of her infection [Music] [Music] I texted you over the Christmas and New Year period more than I text my own family but there's a lovely saying about how friends of the family you choose I think on a standard if we do four shifts we see more of each other than we do our families okay and even then we're spending 12 hours permanently in each other's company chatting away continue away talking whereas when you're at home we'll go home we'll spend a few hours with our loved ones and then we'll go to bed we'll be asleep no did you never said talking we spend a few hours with our loved ones you mentioned we have 12 hours talking we're going to our loved ones and then we'll have four hours of listening yeah [Laughter] [Music] [Applause] it's Midway through the Christmas holidays and ambulance crew Alex temmink and Matt Rodwell are on the night shift joining me actually bonkers I say that every time I get him through this door bang I'll smack mode on it night and they've been called out to help a young woman with extreme neck and back pain [Music] which one with the door open do you reckon I would hope so otherwise they're being burgled a bit weird their patient is 18 years old she lives with her partner Chris okay the light hurting your eye sweeter what's your name nice to meet you Chloe mono oh we just been sick have we yeah okie dokie and you said the light hurts you rise is it really uncomfortable yeah it's like having a really bad headache okay all right do you feel dizzy at all uh well I stand up okay all right like to the top of my neck in the back of my head okay in a little bit as well okay and when did when did the kind of the Jeweler issue start um about before a quarter okay all right what is this pain at the back of your neck feel like it feels like someone's got a rope with sharp edges in um every time I move like tenses that road so it's like sticking into that okay when I when I stand up my legs constantly shatter and shake so what was your concern tonight is it just the fact of the pain is now on your neck and not your back yeah that's what I was worried about okay well we've done some checks on you and stuff so everything in your heart rate being just a little on the quicker side everything else is okay because we don't know what the issue is on balance I think probably hospital is going to be a good idea particularly if the pain has changed now I'm not a big fan of taking people into hospital they don't need to go however the pain is changed it's now in your neck you've got this kind of headache the lights hurting your eyes for us generally they're kind of signs of things like meningitis septicemia she's a meningitis baby she's susceptible to meningitis okay in terms of level of discomfort at the moment I know you've got the kind of headache in the back ache out of 10. it was zeros no pain and tens lots of pain what would you score it at okey-dokey I really felt sorry for Chloe she's not had the easiest start to life and not the greatest of upbringings and with this intimacy experience and the headache the photophobia and the nausea are very indicative of meningitis and as her immune system is a little lower I was really quite concerned about her okay we'll try on some gas in there okay and we'll see how we go we need to get your fixed mate don't we really cool right so here's the engine knocks would you pop it in into your mouth bite down bite down onto it just take nice deep steady breaths [Music] if you had to score the pain out of 10 now zero is nothing 10 loads of pain what would you score out wonderful we'll take her in and then you can meet us there once you've got you've done what you've got to do all right I'll look after it should be sound I promise don't stress bro all right you look terrified in the nicest sense all right I was that nauseating last week to remember college you know as well to be fair foreign I'll get the chair here and we'll just get you to shuffle you are extremely clammy ain't you yeah and we'll just get you to shuffle across petal yeah it's good if you know what I mean I can see you twitch you're not I don't want you standing up and then falling is that all right [Music] just pop it all behind that chair mate and I'll follow you down to yeah okay I'll make a phone call now because then you're walking down okay just so I come before yeah all right let's get this out of the way I'm sorry I'll look at my nose for me [Music] Matt keeps the ambulance lights low to make Chloe as comfortable as possible how long have you been request for them terrified about you absolutely terrified even I even I can see that yeah one day I am coughed up a little bit of blood and been pushed into the hospital in Wales and then that's when it all came out and likely being poorly so it was fundamentally sort of took me in nice golden nice life yeah you're not not I think it's easy but I only stretch the imagination no I suspect it was not the easiest of upbringings yeah this bomb how's the pain now a little bit better you you look a bit more comfortable even if you don't feel it you do look a bit more comfortable boyfriend Chris has arrived hot on Chloe's heels are you doing brother you're right I told you she'd be golden Chloe will now be taken into a and e to be tested for meningitis [Music] thank you [Music] she was quite poorly weren't she bless her she was quite a history as well nice couple with it dodgy pass to give her a bad start tonight yeah [Music] so how would you say Happy New Year in Welsh uh losing there with harpis what looked in London I like that I mean it's quite good really because by midnight on New Year's Eve most people sound like they speak in Welsh anyway Google [Music] it's the early morning shift for ambulance crew Stu Ayers and Rob Bates and the new year is just around the corner I quite like working New Year's Eve night though oh yeah yeah I prefer it it's a good photo work in the easy ignite it it's a good work everyone if I could have Christmas off yeah I know yeah I'm like definitely Christmas is the main one they're on their way to their next patient a 63 year old man has called 999 complaining of breathing trouble [Music] and within seven minutes the team arrives at the patient's house where widower Stephen has left the door ajar hello where are we in here hello for yourself sir I know straight away Stephen describes a complex medical history about that much stuff it's going on when they trained in with them the registrar wasn't going from registered order consultant they want somebody removing all these with everything all these shoes [Laughter] I bet no one expects that one what do you suffer with well I've got a kidney transplant yeah how long ago was that 22 years this year right okay yeah four years more or less than the dates I had a triple purpose chaotic belt replacement okay I've also got a banana water yeah which wall picked up before right okay and what about with your breathing have you got COPD asthma yeah COPD okay right and this really feels like it feels like that's coming on no okay it's Stephen we'll just do a bit of everything then all right so your oxygen level at the moment is 92 percent your heart's going a tad quick would you be okay if I had a little listen to your chest just nice normal breathing for me I'm probably a bit fast on the yard because I'm just leaving just a little bit you know foreign good stuff so your your left side is a little worse than the right at the moment I would say be only because you've got some some wheezing going on sort of slightly at the top there at the back and slightly at the bottom sort of area Steven's having trouble breathing and with his oxygen levels low Stu decides to get him on the nebulizer so this is just so beautiful okay so this is the same stuff that's in the blue inhalers okay obviously it just atomizes and works slightly better [Music] so that'll take about five minutes to go through okay so just breathe breathe nice and normally and right well that's going through Steve and I'm going to start a bit of paperwork is that all right good man get that in nice deep breath spood after just seven minutes is it feeling a bit better slightly yeah the nebulizer would um settled Stephen's breathing temporarily with all his medical history I think he did need to go to the hospital he's got quite a lot of health conditions hadn't he so a fair few if it was a tick box he'd probably tick Mouse so yeah bless him that's where you need to be sat an so Stephen I'm interested so you had your ear taken off how does that one attach the ball gold ball is it magnetic ghost Gold box yeah I think he did to me school yeah that is a mold of me over here oh right okay exactly the same if the opposite the lines look at the line look at the lines on that yeah it is yeah you're right yeah diversity and what's it made of like rubber is it well I've never held someone's ear before no matter what they can do these days yeah absolutely yeah it's brilliant absolutely bless you right you're all strapped in then yeah yeah okay wonderful all right shoot you ready happy thank you so I must have done you some good because your oxygen level's sort of staying around 95 now so it's better than it was isn't it your heart rate's come down slightly as well and your blood pressure yeah it's obviously he's ease that breathing I'll put a good amount hasn't it so wonderful good good [Music] right are you okay to have a little walk down the ramp with us is that okay [Music] Stephen can receive special [Music] foreign [Music] the cause of Muhammad's severe abdominal pain proved hard to pin down a number of tests were all inconclusive and after an overnight stay in hospital he was sent home [Music] 85 year old Ken who had to be persuaded to go to A and E after a number of Falls had his head injury treated in Hospital doctors couldn't work out why he kept falling over but he's made a full recovery and remains steady on his feet Ms sufferer Michelle had a range of tests which revealed she had a gallstone the likely source of her infection to show her gratitude to the ambulance service she crocheted some key rings for laws and Dave to say thank you Chloe who called an ambulance when she had agonizing back and neck pain saw a neurologist who determined it wasn't meningitis but too much fluid on her spine her treatment is ongoing and boyfriend Chris continues to look after her [Music] Steven's breathing difficulties were caused by a bout of pneumonia he spent 10 days in hospital where he continued to surprise staff with his detachable ear it's been entertaining should do it more often do you come here often it's like I never leave [Music]
