i am a woman [Music] we follow three female police officers he is suicidal you have an elastin scarf oh there's a pram in the booth oh never across their week of shifts can i have an ambulance please bye see you later frontline policing in britain is changing the percentage of women on the force has almost doubled in the last 20 years whoever's in that vehicle will be getting arrested in west yorkshire there are now over 1 600 female police officers on duty today can't you run behind me back now from immediate response get down here to csi obviously you want to catch the people that have done this from those just starting out drink some more tea i advise it to the decision makers at the top morning folks thank you very much a single shift can be a matter of life we're just waiting for another ambulance to come death you can just see them they only sat on the edge of the tracks and everything in between there you go can you fit in there you can get lost and every officer has their own way of dealing with the job i [Music] tired and coping with the pressures it can bring back at home hi laura via k would you want to be a policewoman no [Music] [Music] in blackburn pc collette hindle is sorting out child care for daughter gabriella before her next week of shifts i'm just ringing about next week for the arrangements for pick-up and drop-offs could you give me a ring when you get this message bye a single mom she'll be working too late two nights and day shifts before her next time off um mum yeah i'm guessing my hoodie has turned into your hoodie i never knew you were a big hogwarts fan colette's based out of the todd madden station tonight she'll be working on her own on immediate response [Music] shortly after 11 p.m colette gets her first priority call out about a missing person challah bravo 2-0 or as it's known in the force a mispa yeah i've just been contacted by a dc regarding the whisper um he sent a text to a family member tuesday raw footlog i'm expedited i've been requested to um attend a high risk missing person so see if we can find him um because he is suicidal [Music] oh are you still there yeah with the mail now thank you don't have a chat what you're feeling a bit down obviously i'm here to make sure that you're safe and to make sure that you do nothing to harm yourself which is because there's fears that you might do some injury to yourself have you taken anything any tablets or anything what have you taken how many [Music] ambulance in that case charlie bravo 2-0 can i have an ambulance please colette has no idea how many painkillers the man has taken but even this amount could be serious yeah mel's taking about 20-22 [Music] over in leeds temporary patrol inspector vicky vesey is about to start the week with her first night shift it might be worth somebody's going and visiting him tonight marie will you do it and just see if he's abiding by his license conditions up there cause he only came out yesterday so if he's not then we'll feed it back into ireland tonight vicky has paired herself with one of her younger pcs amber parker who had a particularly tough shift last week come on let's go all right see in a bit a couple of the officers have dealt with some you know quite tragic incidents there was an incident involving a young baby that died and we had a couple of officers trying to resuscitate a gentleman in town who suddenly passed away first time i've ever done cpr but did all your training just kick in then from training school well i don't know we'll see won't we hey jenny just a couple of things when you have done what you need to do just go home don't be staying at work i know you need to go visit your mum i think it's one of the most important aspects of being an inspector is the care of the team because if you don't look after the team they're not going to perform if they're not going to perform then we're not going to meet what we're setting out there to do really it's about making sure i've got a happy team as long as you're all right today yeah now i'm fine i'm gonna have to sort my air out i'll stop you there it's not going right it's fine it's tied up so i'll be all right it's not long before vicky and amber have their first call out of the night it's a domestic incident females run with 999 and then i think the call's been terminated but there's been sounds of a disturbance or children crying in the background and then we've had another call to say that she's um asking for our assistance believe there's a domestic incident ongoing at the address and we don't have any further details at the moment is there any previous domestics at this address yeah i think i'd have done domestics at previous addresses west yorkshire police deal with over six cases of domestic abuse every hour [Music] yeah everything goes six hiya vicky and amber have found the suspect outside of the property what's happened tonight just set you under what's happening tonight right well until we know what so we know what's happening mate i'm just going to put these handcuffs on them we will speak but you know your back for me put your hand behind your back get your hand behind your back now because we don't know what's happened if you're not going to do it right we're not saying you've done it wrong you're in handcuffs vicky knows that with amber just out of her probation period she's new to the physical dangers of the job we don't come to work to be assaulted and we don't go come to work to get injured we come to work to help people that sort of behavior is not acceptable you know it's not a nice experience yeah i do feel protective towards amber of course i feel you know responsible for her you know she's a lot younger than me um you know and i don't want to be going home i don't have to go and tell her family that she's been injured unless the woman decides to press charges vicky and amber will have no choice but to let the man go [Applause] 30 miles away colette's waiting for an ambulance after she was called out to the scene of a potential suicide attempt can i ask you to step out of this car is it something you're willing to talk about to somebody nobody thinks you're stupid do they to sit in my car he seemed quite a nice chap you know i feel like he maybe just needed somebody to talk to which obviously i did had spoke to him he told me a few things about his life and i also tried to give him some friendly advice with the man safe colette searches his car tell the brother who they were yeah i just put log i searched this mail vehicle and i found quite a bit of evidence really in suggestion to his intentions found a bag full of pills and alcohol in front seat right it can be upsetting at times you know to go and see somebody who's in a bad way mentally and also to see somebody who's quite vulnerable you know they're not looking after themselves and [Music] you just want to take care of them especially you know when you're going to see people that are quite literally hit rock bottom and you try and give these people advice from a personal point of view as well you know we've all had our problems can you not work your issues out [Music] no what is that i mean you don't have to talk about it to me if you don't want but if it helps you can talk to me i'm not forcing you to talk to me i'm just trying to like help you really it's now been 25 minutes and there's still no sign of the ambulance yeah obviously i've requested an ambulance as well um yeah and i have random they've created it perhaps me unfortunately i don't know what their response time is going to be [Music] can i explain that obviously it's 11 30 pm in leeds temporary patrol inspector vicky vesey and pc amber parker have been called out to an alleged domestic incident and we'll get to the bottom of it they need to find out if the woman who made the 999 call wants to press charges i just go and find out and address what's happening no problem give us a shout if it starts causing a problem hello we've had a couple of phone calls and we've heard the children in the background on one of them we're going to explain what's happened so that we can get to the bottom of it i think you've got somewhere else to go to to his mum although the woman wants her partner to leave the area she doesn't want any further police involvement right listen just listen to me right listen carry on like you are carry on like you are you're gonna go to custody because i'm concerned that you're going to be violent do you want to go to your mums [Music] you either go to custody or you go to your mum's make your decision now which one is it despite his aggressive behaviour vicky has no choice than to release him right turn around and i'll take i'll take anchov we didn't know that did we just watch you sir what's your shoelace just turn around you're going to mums will she have you even when you're rather too many to drink all right listen you can't we can't risk it all right we can't risk injury can we all right do you want some time sorry i'd love some hand sanitizer thanks smells nice that body shop what a shot when you guys went to see the female they've set up all sorts of threats to me and what it's going to do to me strange frequently officers are abused by people they arrest or remember the public and it's not acceptable but i think because it is so frequent we get used to it when i first joined i was very naive and i probably was shocked by that sort of behavior but you know i've probably got a bit of a rhino skin now you know it's 20 years later and it just becomes part and parcel of work really we get a lot of domestic incidents reported go to a lot per shift too much drink arguing gets out of hand so much so the police get cold you know i fall out with my husband but please don't get called to my address [Music] it's almost midnight and across west yorkshire pc colette hindell has been called out to a man who's taken a potentially life-threatening amount of painkillers yeah obviously i've requested an ambulance as well um an ambulance has been called but there are none in the immediate area colette needs to make a decision first yeah i have random they've created it tactically unfortunately i don't know what their response time is so i'm going to take you to hospital because we'll be waiting here just for an ambulance now is that all right with you yeah i'm going to lock it up is that all right [Music] colette still isn't sure about the amount of painkillers the man's actually taken and with the nearest a e department over seven miles away she's under pressure to get him there first so this is the accident and emergency the other officers waiting for a minute come on we'll book you in yeah from this moment on the man will be looked after by the a e team he's obviously struggling as a mum you need to know these things because you can help him and you will be there to make sure he doesn't do anything serious but it is hard to switch off and be a police officer these are the tablets from this bag so i'm seizing these obviously i don't want to give them him back and they'll get disposed of if it was my daughter you know maybe in a few years time saying she felt really long i kind of put myself in that situation and think well if gabriella ever felt like that if somebody brought it to me i would be relieved [Music] the next day vicki makes the most of the time she has off before her next shift my husband trevor was a police officer for 30 years hello he retired with a sergeant two or three years ago but worked a lot of time in operations come on let's go oh my god come on dogs she's a brilliant cop she will lead from front she will go out with them you know a lot of bosses won't do that yeah we've got some bags sometimes she does have bad days really bad days when she's seeing things and done things that aren't pleasant at all nothing my lip looking now sir it's all right [Laughter] it can be tough sometimes she comes on with cut some bruises and i'm really really peeved off about it i don't like it because i'm thinking who's done that to you but that's part of the job it feels a bit sort of lower yeah she's just because she's a female don't mean to say she's not getting stuck in and getting older people and that's what she will do see your love see you bye bye crazies come on that needs sorting out actually i can do that tonight in wakefield pc jade hunter leaves fiance david at home while she goes after her first night shift of the week the 24 year old has been in the job just six months i'm still quite young in service working on response is hard it's been an absolute whirlwind it's a lot to learn in a short space of time you go through that self-doubt every single day things do upset me um but my team is really really supportive and i think that's so important thank to give me the confidence that i could get through it every day [Music] [Music] jade is partnered with experienced officer pc nikki milburn their first call of the night has just come through right so what are we meant to be looking for the only information they have to go on is that there's been a serious car crash like a car crash yeah there's some kind of i don't know something's happened did it roll do we know i don't know this this is it yeah they've been on this road that they weren't meant to be on oh wow bravo two three bravo two three we've located this vehicle i've got in there though on closer inspection it looks like there aren't any casualties on scene they need to find out what happened they've literally drove through the first set of bullets the second set of bollards absolute speed hasn't there oh there's a pram in the booth oh never we got a wrench yep let's find out who our guy is the airbag had deployed the windscreen was smashed i honestly don't even know how they got out of that the car's obviously gone flying down hit something and turned up onto his side but that would have been some impact yeah can i pass you the registration number for this vehicle um from earlier and also can we arrange recovery please it isn't a farmer's field on its side oh it's stolen it stolen yesterday from south korea the one thing i've learned in the police force there are people who you can lean on and who you can talk to and who you can ask for advice if you don't know what's happening and it helps a lot are they going to get any forensics out there will they airbag's gone off what does that mean in his face oh true that always thinking it [Music] in leeds temporary patrol inspector vicki vesey is on her final night shift of the week with pc amber parker okay i'm having a way hi it's not it's not a public toilet sorry friday and saturday nights is our busiest nights we get a lot of calls of people being assaulted people fighting a lot of it's just drunken idiotic behaviour but a serious assault in the city centre can take up several resources we're going to a report of somebody having been glass door staff have detained somebody there vicky already has one of her team at the scene but with several casualties they've called for urgent backup yeah we see we are still some distance away we don't know the severity of the injuries present for the injured party so what i need to do when we get there have we got enough resources to deal with what we're gonna face [Music] one man has been detained and another is being treated in the back of an ambulance as temporary inspector vicky is in charge of the team on the ground can we just ring ahead and just see if they've got a dry cell she needs to make sure her officers have the witnesses to make an arrest that's okay he's the only in japan no there's two injured parties hits him and then the glasses starting with a man who was caught in the crossfire where's the other injured party yeah no it's just getting treated have you all witnessed what's happened lads i did yeah right have you given your details yeah yeah no problem no will you give them to that cop my colleague there then yeah no problem thank you all right lewis if you've been with the suspect you can't go with the injured party all right so this is all flying glasses up a little bit yeah those they're sort out off feel fear don't think you can have anything you have any lasting scars they look really they're really tiny so i think you'll be all right we'll scar forever don't push it though was there a build up today we're walking out he's turning it on to me i'm just smackdown right let me have a look at your head three inch laceration with this incident now a serious assault case any evidence could be crucial oh well done stem of the wine glasses sound thank you i've got a son myself samuel he's nearly 19 now and on a weekend he wants to go out with his friends drinking and for me as a mum um you know that is worrying and probably because i'm a police officer and i've seen these sort of instances happen i worry for his safety am i right here found it's not a good way to underneath is it for now vicky and her pcs have done all they can witness statements taken evidence collected and the victim on his way to hospital the team are back out for a busy night [Music] [Music] it's almost the end of the week in blackburn pc colette hindell is running late after dropping her daughter at school it does take about 40 minutes to get to tomadan you know he's basically pushing it a bit but this is what life is like single parent school runs and juggling work for her final shift of the week collette will be working solo again on immediate response it's just minutes before she gets her first call so we're off to an rtc now basically they might need road closures putting in place so i might need to get further information from witnesses at the scene well obviously i'm hoping that you know there's not going to be multiple injuries we could be first on scene so we might have to give first aid to people as ambulance been requested yes yes you said we've got ambulance right has anybody lost any consciousness or any bleeding anywhere the ambulance are you witness i didn't see it it happened just in front of me as the first of the emergency services at the crash colette needs to make an immediate call on the severity of the injuries as well as keeping an eye on any witnesses at the scene one one both casualties conscious and breathing however it's very cold and they're obviously in a state of shock we're having to try and keep them warm if we could get an update on ambulance please for 20 minutes colette is the only officer at the scene of the crash trying to look after the injured women and the other driver until the ambulance arrives are you the driver of this vehicle yeah just sit in the back of my car for me please when you get there and there's two women laid out in the road and obviously you know do they need first aid are they conscious are they breathing so that can be really scary because i'm not a paramedic you know right we're just chasing up ambulance everybody's looking at me like i'm the superhero that i've got the answer to everything i'm your feet here eight minutes let's cover your legs a bit more though when i go to jobs like that i always kind of put myself in in that person's shoes or that person's mum's shoes i think well if my daughter gabriella was out there i don't know how hard to manage [Music] hi mom hi love you okay yeah good i just want to know if you've had a good day well no because [Music] and there was no um left so i just had to have a jacket taste too and cheese and there was no forks there so i had to eat my jacket potato with a knife that is such a bad day so you've had no beans enough forks to eat jacket potato no and i just put it in the bin oh dear so have you had something to eat now yeah oh so you've gone for the healthy option then yeah i will see you shortly all right okay bye love you if you need me ring mia love you bye bye [Applause] it's 7 15 pm and jade and nikki have had an urgent call out to a report of a burglary it's been away for the weekend returned and the house has been broken into suspects gained entry through the patio and double inside windows glass smashed they've not checked upstairs yet all downstairs has been through cupboards and drawers open every room has been searched unknown what has been taken house is too much of a mess can't tell if there's any footprints jewelry and money's been taken from upstairs i'd be so upset yeah it's my worst nightmare i go on that like even if david leaves is like laptop on the sofa or something and i like put it in cupboards and stuff yeah i just said i had keys and everything maybe this one here and it should be on the left pc two one four eight in couple with four eights and zero we're attending an address of a report of a burglary which happened um whilst the occupants have been away am here i'm jade david yeah my wife we've got some family inside yeah rookie cop jade wants to prove to nikki she can step up and take charge but she'll need to manage a family devastated by the impact of the break-in it's been a long week for pc collette hindle but she's finally clocking off this is a very late lunch or tea whatever it's gonna have to be a packet of crisp i think cheers bye from a very young age from being at school i always said i wanted to be a police officer you know they really inspired me being part of something worthwhile i think what appealed to me was helping other people you know i want to do some good i want to give something back so yeah if i wasn't a police officer then i might not be able to give gabriella the life that she has now i'm quite proud of you for being a police officer but i've never really thought of anything different thought it was normal because you've been a policewoman all my life i couldn't imagine myself doing anything different it's become part of me really [Music] in wakefield rookie pc jade hunter is leading the investigation into a distressing break-in the smash light off as well which sort of leads me to believe that it was at some point last night with the smashing the light off here i'm sort of thinking it's going to be a darkness isn't it i didn't know until i come around to have a look yeah and i thought why don't light come on and it's in there i think i know if they've come that way believe me i know but the oven two three can we request csi please to examine the doors where they've made entry and also some other drawers and cabinets where they've made an untidy search please was it anything odd did you notice anything no it was just because it was part there and yeah right was he a white male very good needs to find the balance between preserving the crime scene for csi and minimizing the trauma for the family i'd rather you didn't touch anything just while csi get here they've had that out of the case right that was in there [Music] it's horrible isn't it i mean they've obviously been in quite a while and it it's a genuinely nice couple we've been away for the weekend and they've come back and the house is what we call an um kylie search most of jewellery's gone they've made a gold chain there's anything you can see in there that i won't know my wife's best one for that that's absolutely fine don't worry i've never really seen anything like that because i'm quite young in service and when we got there i was quite shocked at the state of the house i sort of lived in a bubble before this and thought the world was all merry-go-rounds and rosy and it's not want me to have a look for your tina and put your mind up just show me where you want to go i'm a new 24 year old girl but this is my job now and you've got to have professional and let nothing bother you i'd say it's easy if we just wait for them and then if there is any fingerprints or anything that they could maybe lift and that'll massively help our investigation you can help people who are vulnerable you can stop people feeling scared and upset it's something i would really understand now not your fault is it there are some horrible people out there i think because the family were all there and the victims were so upset it brings home that this is someone's house that's someone's mum you know that's someone's grandparents and nobody deserves that to happen someone's just come in and taken everything got your details and also put your forward to something that we call victim support so jade has collected all the evidence and statements needed now all she can do is reassure the family they've made me feel vulnerable and i'm not eventually no you don't seem it no i know so i've told david that csi you're going to ring it okay no worries it is now the end of the first set i just feel tired very tired it's been a long week so i think every day is a challenge every day we face things that we've not faced before or things we're not sure about and there is such a wide range of things to learn in the police force you're never going to 100 know everything but eventually i do want to see where i can go and see what the future holds one of the things that made me want to join my sharks as opposed to any other force what's that we're headed by a woman i think it's great i'd like to think i can go all the way to the top then you never know i might be too comfortable one day we'll see in leeds temporary inspector vicki vesey is finally off duty but she's heading back to the station this time for a very special event hosted by chief constable d collins tonight i'm going to my good conduct and long service ceremony at car gate you get your you get your medal and the chief constable there and she'll do some speeches having people like vicky who can help support somebody who's just joined show them the ropes teach them the skills and give them the experience that they need is absolutely crucial so people like vicky are absolute stars as far as i'm concerned it's nice specifically more for my family to come and see me get it they've put up with the ups and downs that i've been through um through my career whether it's an incident that i've dealt with or going through promotion processes there you go can i just get one with my dad when i joined there wasn't that many policewomen on the team [Applause] now there's a lot more women in policing and a lot more women getting promoted right through to the top and obviously the chief constable is a female i hope you all feel a great sense of pride when you collect your medal this evening and i hope that you find time to reflect on your career today our next recipient this evening is temporary expensive victoria lesser i'd like to welcome her to the stage [Applause] it's been a really long week thank you i've done too early it's too late two nights every day was really busy the team were busy we've dealt with some really sort of challenging incidents um and it was tiring at times you are fabulous you keep up that wonderful work thank you so much to then come on this event it sort of highlights the work that you do and it's been really enjoyable and rewarding you think actually you know i am doing a good job and it's recognised they've made me feel vulnerable and i'm not eventually no you don't seem it no i know [Music] so this is all flying glass is it
