Can I speak to you for a second? Yeah, sure. All right. Um, I guess there's What's going on with your account? I don't know. That's what I'm trying to figure out. All right. Do you have your ID with you? She has it. She has it? All right. All right. Um, what's your name? Yeah, she has all the information. Here, let's go over to the counter. I was going to use the restroom. Um, well, give it a second. All right. Okay. Thank you. All right. Here, let's just go up to the counter here. Could you see that we get her ID? I guess there's some confusion about who you are. I should be. Okay. Yeah. Go outside. No, no, no, no. Here, have a seat right here for me. Have a seat. Have a seat. All right. Now, who gave you this check? Um, it's right here. Okay. Um, and what did they give you the check for? Um, I'm a lawyer, so Okay. All right. So, it's for uh services? Yes, sir. All right. And you live in Coral Gables right now? Yes, I have an Airbnb that I'm doing in Biscala. Okay. So, so what is it's um one of the um my my clients with like like what kind of work do you what what uh what what business are they in? Um I'm not sure. It's my client. He wrote me the check. Okay. You say he was your client, but you don't know. Does he see? No. Is a person or actual business? No, it's a person. Okay. The bank manager revealed that the woman had been withdrawing large sums using a fake ID. Officers investigated and confirmed the ID was fake and the woman didn't match the client's details. The girl, okay, so I just want to give you a little bit of a history without her hearing me. Okay. She's been coming into branches for the last few weeks taking money. Yesterday, we got a call from back office. She's not who she says she is. They've already blocked the account. We've confirmed with the client that this is not her. She's taken a lot of money from these people. She has an ID. It's clearly a fake ID. So, where where's the actual client at down south in Maine? So, this client says she doesn't have a debit card. We confirmed that the website has debit card. She uses her debit card. And how does she get money? She comes in with a ID. She knows all the information for these people. How you doing? I'm good. How are you? Not bad. What you Yeah. Um, I think black. Okay. What color is it? White. We just checked this in the car. Uh, she drives a white Cadillac. She said, "Where's it parked?" Out front. Out on the side. All right, I think we figured this out. So, here's what we're going to do. I'm going to read you something. All right. I'm required to warn you before you make these statements if you have the following constitutional rights. Okay? You have the right to remain silent, not answer any questions. Do you understand? You have the right to remain any statement you make must be freely and voluntarily given. Do you understand? Yes, sir. You have the right to the presence and representation of a lawyer of your choice before you make any statements and during any questioning. You understand? Okay. If you cannot afford a lawyer, you're entitled to the presence and representation of court appointing lawyer before you make any statements and during any question. You understand? At any time during the interview, you do not wish to answer any questions. All right. I can make no threats or promises to induce you to make a statement especially of your own free will. Understand? And then statement can be. All right. Now, you said you're a lawyer, so I guess those right understand. All right. I guess the big question is um while I have your driver's license, man, what's your real name? That is I'll speak to my attorney. All right. You can do that. Thank you. As the woman's scam was exposed, the cops took legal action. Meanwhile, the bank staff provided details of her recent fraudulent transactions, building the case against her. Arrest down. Yeah, no problem. I was just going to turn it for you. That's all I was doing. Trying to be I'm just trying to make it comfortable for you. If you do it like you're praying, it's more comfortable. Let's grab this one. Should I put these things down first? [Music] Do you have anything on you we should know about? No. There's nothing. All right. I'm placing arrest with fraud. Okay. All right. What we're going to do is I'm going to collect some information. Stay with her there for a second while I get some of the supporting stuff. I guess you were here yesterday. You withdrew some money. Okay. I'm just going to talk to the money attorney. All right. She's got other information for you. Um, do you know this woman or do you have any idea who she is? She hasn't provided her name yet. Um, you know, outside of her driver's license, which shows your name and her picture? Absolutely not. This is fraud, right? No, no, I understand that. I wasn't sure if you like know how she got the information or anything else. Um, cuz I'm walking into this, you know, fresh and so it's kind of important for me to articulate the whole idea. I mean, obviously she's got a fake driver's license with your information on it and her picture. Um, okay. And she's trying to deposit a check. Um, she wants to cash it. She came in last night. Well, that's that's what she did yesterday, the day before. Okay. I have a Coral Gables case number right now, which was just open. Okay. Okay. Did she do this? Um, did she commit any frauds in Coral Gables? Not that I know of. Okay. Not that I know of because what alerted me to this was I always look at my bank account, right? And I had given some information to a rental company last week and as my private banker is aware I have City Bank. I'm always checking the accounts. I am always very, you know, proactive because we have a lot of funds going in and out of our accounts, right? My husb I also work with him. I'm also an attorney. Uhhuh. So yesterday around I would say probably 4:00 I'm speaking to Mel regarding the issue of getting some information and I'm like you're not going to believe this. I go there was a deposit done April 4th Uhhuh. for 1984 and then a simultaneous withdrawal through a tether. I rarely go I mean I go through tellers but only here in Coral Gable right and this uh and this is I'm sorry but this uh this deposit and um withdrawal was here at this bank here in del there okay so are we talking about the one the 44 um that was in Boon okay so one in Buon also it's in Boon okay all right After gathering a statement from the bank manager, the cops proceeded with the case, bringing the woman to the station to answer for her crimes. I do have a problem, though. What's that? I'm a brand new manager, so I don't know. But a couple years ago, we had the exact same scenario. And that manager told officer, the lady officer, that we are not allowed to give sworn statements from the bank. Really? So, you will have to go based off what she tells you. Okay. All right. I don't know where that statement goes. If I were to give it to you and then I get in trouble for giving it. I mean, it ends up going it's for the state attorney's office. So, um, yeah. So, it's probably best. All right. You did? Yeah. Your car is not out here, I'm guessing. No. Yeah. When I pulled up, there was a guy in a passenger seat seat of a car sitting over there. I'm guessing he probably waited before we drove off. If I had You want me to call Kimmy to to meet you? Yeah. I mean, that would be great. Whoa. What is this? Sort of a straight system. Just sit in and you'll be fine. Just sit in normal. Okay. Mhm. She's got to be working with somebody. When I pulled up there, there was a guy in the car sitting there in the passenger seat. Pull that out. A paper trail. Can't get without paper trail. Have you ever seen somebody have a deal this good? That's pretty good. I've never seen I mean, yeah, but that's pretty Yeah. I mean, obviously when I when I ran it, the picture didn't match. Yeah. Um but like All right. As soon as I saw that, I That's the only thing I had. Yeah. So, as far as charges, I can charge you with with using a big license. Um and then with the grand theft crossing lines crossing you can um what to commit a fraud. Yeah. So let's grab that. So I just want to make sure I I don't know where she lives. Well, our ID said where she lives. She said she was I guess she doesn't have an address right now. The woman was charged with grand theft, passing a forged check, bank fraud, and presenting a fake ID. Though you borrow something, you're supposed to return it on time. But in this case, this scammer woman rented a U-Haul and never intended to return it. Yeah. All these people IDs. Yeah. So, those two are the same person. But as far as this white lady, no clue. On April 21st, 2022, Sandy Springs police officers identified a stolen U-Haul van flagged by area cameras and initiated a traffic stop. On arrival, the officers detained her and started the [Music] investigation. Roll the window down. Put your hand out the window. Your hand reach on the outside and open the door. Outside open the door. Hey, do we have a passenger? I don't know. Behind you. All right. Backward back. Hey, come first. Back [Applause] [Applause] there all the traffic on. Couple more keys with it. [Applause] You want to put her on your car real quick? Absolutely not. We'll figure this out. The cops searched the suspect's belongings and during the search of a belt bag, officers found several IDs belonging to other people, sparking even more questions. That's not broke. Oh god. Hey, what'd you say her name is? give you like 12 and maybe what is it? She said Felicia. Oh yeah. Okay. So these are hers. So that's her. This is her. This is hers. She said her name was Felicia. Are there different ID numbers? No. Oh, you know, I'll leave it to the pros. Well, we are right by the police department, so we could take the show off the road. Yeah. You want to take it to Well, at least we know all that stuff. Praise God. At least when we got there. She entered her out. Yeah. All these people. Yeah. So, those two are the same person. But as far as this white lady, no clue. I got a feeling that's probably a kid of hers. What's the birthday on him? Who's this? My cousin. Cousin. That's her cousin. She did. Oh, it's her cousin. Yeah. The cops read Vanna her Miranda rights and questioned her about the stolen vehicle. She claimed she had extended the rental and was confused about the stolen report, but her story raised doubts. Hey, I didn't get your name. What is it? Van Leia. Van Leia. Jackson. Okay. Miss Van Leia. I'm Officer Ward. Mhm. Um, do you understand you have the right to remain silent? No. The [ __ ] is going on? Vehicles reported stolen. Why is it reported stolen? I don't know where you don't I can't ask you questions without asking or advising your Miranda rights cuz you are So, do you understand you have the right to remain silent? Okay. Do you understand anything you say can be used against you in court? Sure. Do you understand you have the right to have an attorney with you before I ask you any questions? Do you understand if you can't afford an attorney, one can be appointed to you at no cost to you prior to me asking the questions? uh you understand that if you do decide to start answering questions, you can stop at any time. Basically, you be like, you know what, no, I want to talk to my lawyer. Even if you say like right now, yeah, I'll answer your questions. Then later down the road, you're going to be like, hey, right, never mind. I want a lawyer. Okay. With all that being said, you agree to speak with me without a lawyer here. Okay. Like I said, you can stop at any time. Yeah. Absolutely. Okay. So, the the vehicle's reported stolen. Um, basically it looks like you were supposed to return it and didn't return it. I extended it. They didn't know. They had my card on file, everything. So, when did you extend it? I extended it like almost last week, almost a week and a half ago cuz I've been moved here from Wisconsin and my house wasn't ready. So, they actually called me like, "Well, you need it for a couple more days." Oman call said, "Yeah, I need a couple more days." So, we have your card off file. Okay. No one called me paperwork on that. They'll probably be back at home, but they called me on the phone. So my think about it is why no one I wouldn't be driving around just lolly gagging. Yeah. And it's a stolen vehicle. They wouldn't tell me like oh report is stolen. You got to return it. Why would I just be driving around I don't know Georgia. I'm not even from here. That's why I'm That's why I'm asking cuz it's as stolen. That's why you got 15 cops. That's why I'm like what the did I just call this my thinking I'm lost. I'm just thinking cuz I was going slow cuz I'm using my GPS. Uhhuh. And I'm like what the going on? Like, no, I wouldn't have been driving that vehicle had I known it was reported stolen or they wasn't charging my car. Yeah. My That's why I kept my So, when's the last like actual correspondence you've had with them? Um, a week and a half ago. Week and a half ago. Did they charge your card then? Uh, I do have a charge on my car. It's a pending charge. So, it didn't like take all day off yet. It's like a pending charge. I think they only fully charge you if when you return it. So they had my card on file, but they told him I needed extended because my house wasn't saying, "Oh, we're going to drive." And they did it. They didn't even do it right the first time. I told him when I van in Milwaukee, I told them that I was coming to Georgia. So he was he had me just going far out like I said, "No, I'm driving to Georgia." So they had to redo that cuz they had me still in Milwaukee. I said, "No, I came to Georgia." And I said, "I'm going to return it to you all here in Georgia." that you see that it's reported stolen out of Milwaukee. I was just going to put it in. [ __ ] ridiculous spot. Yeah. Um do is the contract in the vehicle? The rental contract? Uh that probably be at the house. It's at the house. Where do you stay at? I'm staying with a friend right now. Okay. The contract. Yeah. But it would the contract wouldn't have the extended agreement on there because it wouldn't just be the initial contract and I could call U-Haul and be like, "Hey, what's up?" Well, I could use U-Haul on Appleton and Wisconsin Avenue to look at U-Haul Avenue. Okay. Well, I don't know anything about Avenue. They'll give you the number is what I'm saying. They give you the number, but All right. Yeah. I don't know. That's That's beyond me. Had I known it was before Where were you headed to now? Back to the house. I was lost. I actually just came from the gas station getting gas and I was using my GPS. So I really don't know where the at. I'm headed to my Where are you coming from? Where I'm coming from? Um I'll get my lashes done. Where did you get your lashes? You know the town. Was it in Sandy Spring? Little past like Roswell. I think it was in Roswell. Roswell's that way. That way? I don't know. I got lost. I don't know. It's in my Did you go across the river? [Music] I remember I was on the highway maybe area like that but it's in my it's in my tracking it's in my GPS the last address I was at today. Okay. And I'm headed to Dun Woody place Woody place. She stays in Dun Woody. All right. As the cop questioned her about the multiple IDs. Vana insisted they belong to her relatives with one from a friend. But her shaky answers only exposed the lie she was trying to cover up. I think this is the same U-Haul that's been hitting up at Dumb Springs. Yeah, she's she stays up there. And as soon as I saw it, I was like, she did. She stays up at Dumby Place. That hit we've been getting up there for the U-Haul. What's this? IDs. You got You got like like My mom, she's passed away. They played with my mom. She passed away to keep her in my ID. My cousin left her ID. The boy is my son, Katie Williams. That's my son's. That's my ID. And then the other one is my cousin's ID. What about the white chick? Right. Yeah. I think there's some white. Yeah. That's my friend from back home. That's how I Well, you got her ID. Why do I have it? Cuz she gave it to me. Listen, I'm not a thief or steal steal people IDs. All the people can count for the IDs. I don't know who y'all getting from that, but Well, I just there it's not very often you run into someone who's got seven IDs on them, you know. Oh, it could be. Yeah. I mean, that kind of I keep I keep my mom's ID cuz she's dead. Yeah, that's understandable. Oh, and then your son's ID. That means my son's ID and cousin's ID. Whatever. It's just the the white chick cuz she lost her. Oh, cuz it's the white chick. She's No, that's the only one that's like doesn't really make sense. What can I do with a white chick ID? Nothing. That's all I was wondering. I was wondering like she can't pass off this way. No. No. Exactly. No, she she's got kicking it for her, but she gets it. Does she stay in Georgia as well or she still stays in Wisconsin? Okay. And I forgot I had this. So I really actually have to Van Leisha and she she got and we got her ID. Yeah. All right. So cousin's ID, dead mother's ID, her son's ID, and then the white chick was just a friend. So, she's got a decent explanation for all the ideas. Did you? Yeah. Did you ask where she got you? Yeah. Wisconsin. She said that they were supposed to have extended it a week and a half ago. She has a charge on her card for it. Um, that that's what she said the paperwork. Convenient. However, I can tell you I've run a U-Haul not too long ago and they gave you option for digital copy through email. Yeah, I said normally when I last U-Haul or at least both. I think the receipt is digital. Yeah, Vanisha. Yes. Hey, do you not do you have like a digital copy of your contract like in your email or anything? I know every time I've rented a U-Haul, they give me paper one and then Okay. [Applause] Vana was charged with theft by conversion and transported to the Sandy Springs Police Department where she failed to provide documentation for the rental extension or a digital receipt.
