emergencies I'm okay o that's a good one and more cameras what's that up that Tyler is a little camera we're taking you back to the heart of the action just lie down for me we're from the ambulance okay I don't want to face there are some new faces I'm happy to be your crew mate I feel like we've bonded and some old friends I be driving you is it a fact that I'm faster and smoother than you your driving's terrible how can I help body mounted camera record every moment nice deep breaths go open up Smash in to show you what goes on behind closed doors we'll get you right all right you'll be on the front line with the ambulance cruise from West Midland's Ambulance Service I don't need to be a doctor I just need to know what I can do to help as they deal with 3,000 emergency calls each day we see so many people you get told that NY seword there so many people can fight it now step inside the the ambulance you take care mate all right mate thank [Music] you do you still say Merry Christmas to people on boxing day and like throughout the week no and you know what I was really disappointed in my mom didn't do pig and blankets this year what's that all and I was like no no no no l Pig and blankets if i' known they weren't on the table I'd have flipping well bought them and brought them with them what do we celebrate on Jesus's birthday then which Christmas day right let's break it down Christ Christ oh yeah that was m celebration so we've got the time Christ is celebrated uhhuh wow I'm now because of that stupid thing you asked I'm eating your C [Music] it's early on boxing day morning oh category one ambulance technician Becky Hyde and paramedic Dan Redfern are making their way to the second job of the day or receive thank you one an 8-year-old girl is having a [Music] seizure either a known fitter known epileptic or I would imagine a febra update an assignment all right no longer [Music] fixing exp the girl who has Type 1 diabetes has gone into a diabetic shock or hypo it happens when blood sugar levels plummet and can lead to seizures or even coma hello good morning the patient worried parents Sarah and Kevin are looking after her who's this JY guys do you want to tell me what's happened today yeah I kind of down stays with her and she said she felt fine said you feel L she no and then the next thing there she was sitting there the back to me and she just went flat on the back and then she started fitting her the um emergency injection okay great just test the sugars in the the C oh I love that how frequent does this happen never never happened before how long she been diabetic I need so 12 months not even in the family right you okay da she will need a moment that's that's all your finger hello is that a smile then sharp scratch do your sugar like that was okay yeah go M 54 so it's coming up Daisy's blood sugar levels are responding to the injection but having an attack like that can be physically draining especially for a child normally anyone that has a seizure they can seem quite post STI so which is the state that she's in now takes just sort of a good 10 15 20 minutes to come around but everybody's different oh it's all right all right don't about the carpet I think she's going to be sick [Music] again is she eaten this morning no when did you last have anything to eat like a meal or anything two just wipe it for you it up there you go don't stand up yet don't stand up yet don't stand up yet oh oh toys are upstairs so scary though thought was going to they are terrifying when a young child is diagnosed with diabetes it can be a sharp learning curve I felt quite sorry for a family to be honest her family had never seen high power attack before our Daisy hav seizure and it was I think it was more scary for them coming to terms with the fact that this is what it's going to be potentially going to be like does she have a diabetic nurse or is it just through the GP I yeah it might just be that she needs like a a review cuz I know some people um they'll constantly keep going back because they just can't get the dosage right or the insulin right she'll be back on form in an hour so normally it doesn't take them too long yeah kids are really resilient as well they are Daisy wants to rest but before they leave the paramedics need to make sure she's stable hello again Daisy how are you feeling now sweet a bit better a little bit better not great though that's to be expected how you felt earlier was it wasn't very nice what's happened to you this morning we want to avoid that if possible so you're going to need to eat and drink as and when you can can I see you have the tiniest little bit before I go otherwise we're going to going to need to take you with us to the hospital just a tiny tiny bit sit up just literally wet your mouth is this normal I mean can it last for a long time that's it yeah yeah okay going you want me out your way right I'll get out of your hair okay you to it that's so no no problem at all bye da it was lovely to meet you thank you no worries hope you enjoy the rest of your day you take care any problems you've got our number all right thank you take care guys look out yourself your boxing day if you can [Music] yeah lovely family yeah they're really not I think I think she's the youngest type diabetic I've been seen yeah and she's never had sees with it as well so I bet her mom was like beside herself this [Music] [Laughter] morning I think that that's an interesting thing this one piece will make 52 layers watch on mobile devices or the big screen all for free no subscription required download V now it's another festive shift for paramedics Dena Evans and Mike hipgrave and overnight snow has fallen in Willen Hall okay it's going to freeze tonight that's yeah know that's what I mean because it's all getting wet they are getting really slippy aren't they mom of 3D now recently qualified as a paramedic I didn't learn any songs to sing to you you can't sing I can sing I often make up my own words I don't always know the words go on then but that's what I mean you need now no make one up for me then no I don't actually make one up I just a rap your song it's not like I sit a home writing song lyrics the song will have to wait information about their next patient has just come through 71y old Frank has got some chest pain that's all we've [Music] got the ambulance crew are just a couple of miles from the patient's home is it here yes there it is there we be all right here I've got my Shel anyway if I need it arriv Fe mode activated waiting for them is concerned friend Jason hello sir we here for you or somebody else is he R you as he yeah retired engineer Frank has had severe chest pains and been finding it difficult to breathe since returning from his Supermarket shop earlier today I'm Mike and this is hi Frank I'm Dina so what's happened tonight then Frank P there my chest what time did it start S I've been bad yeah I've been bad Fel in B do you feel like to breath yeah going to put some sticky dots on you bad cough or anything recently Frank no no have you got um I've been bad though medications or anything that you medication yeah yeah cancer where where of okay cancer Frank I'm going to have a little listen to your chest all right is that okay [Music] that's 84 very tacky as well Frank presented with low oxygen levels of only 84% uh that was quite worrying normally we look for at least over 93% also his heart rate was around about 160 which suggested that he was uh he was quite ill with figures like that we we would never consider leaving anybody at home what does that pain feel like that's in your chest can you describe it to me just sharp sharp right there right there sure like a like a swallowed a OD potato okay have you ever heard anything like this before Frank you ever like I had yes I had uh when I was 54 I had two Sten in stent are small mesh tubes that are used to treat narrow or weak arteries Frank had two stance fitted after suffering an angina attack 17 years ago there you go we'll pop these stickers on your chest while that's on all right yeah I've just have the SC just had an AR SC mhm was everything all right from that I don't know you're waiting for the results [Music] yeah I getal can't say that friend cuz you're not all right I why don't you want to go don't what reason [Applause] sweet nobody does Frank you you just explain to you your breathing is not very good your oxygen levels are very low and your heart rate is very fast need to be SE SE by a doctor tonight as they need to take Frank to hospital Mike gets to work clearing the snow off the drive while Dina Waits inside with Frank's considerable Entourage Frank mate your mate mate oh are they you got low is you all turned up for a bit of a party hav't they I've G to see you got they've come to see me have they if I can take a couple of pills some aspiring or something Frank thinks his chest pains our angina which can usually be treated at home that might not be the problem oh please but what if that's not the problem it is the problem I know it is because I had enjoin her and I know the problem I knew what the pain was was it like you what you've had before it isn't enjoy it's going off it's going off now it's going off it's and to me no I'm not fing to you thing is Frank tell me brothers look how quick your heart's going yes I you think so would you GL in the eyes oh Frank you charmer but I can't we can't that's that's too quick that's too quick my your personal opinion you need to it more on going there why will let cuz down the place you get to sit in the back of the ambulance with me you give me a G spray please Frank knows the spray can be given at home to relieve the symptoms of angina and thinks he can avoid a trip to hospital but if that Pain's eased in your chest now it's gone and it's gone it's gone so then we can't give you GTM well it's Ain quite gone are you backpedaling to it's going to bit it it's G to bit okay FR come a woman you can't argue with a woman I we're always right you know that don't you 30 minutes later and with his chest and breathing not really improving he finally agrees to go to A and D have youever clean this path all I've cleaned this path for you I'm going to put it all back in a minute there right go for it [Music] yourself there we are I'm [Applause] well I've put up look with these cancer and I could take anything but I am frightened of having a stri look all right don't worry because people looking after me don't worry let's get this heating on warm you up a little bit oh I have just been bad I thought I was dying two days ago three days ago when were you diagnosed Frank cancer yeah 2013 yeah 4 years years ago this is why we need to get you at the hospital don't we yeah get your checked out we can go Mick if you want okay thank you Frank's going to put you on a little bit of oxygen all right yeah hang on a sec while doing Frank's checks dea's spotted something on the heart monitor I'll just bu with me a second let me just ring the Hospital yeah CU your heart's going quite quick all right yeah hello W Manet I've got a 71y old male who um has got some sharp Central chest pain tonight his heart rate fluctuating between 160 up to 182 and his saturation levels on O2 are still only sitting at 91% you can um pop your lights on if you want Mick i' let her know 999 activ how's that pain in your chest now coming back on again it you back stay sort of type of pain again yeah sure I think once we got Frank onto the ambulance it was more and more obvious that a cardiac event was occurring and he was growing more and more increasingly concerned so it was it was important that we kept him calm kept reassuring him on that journey to hospital despite the fact that we were aware of what was going on in that situation this is bad bad what what's happening to you now yeah well I don't don't know Frank to be honest your heart is going quite quick this is why you need to come to hospital we're nearly there luckily there isn't much traffic on on the roads and it takes less than 10 minutes to arrive that's all right Frank will be assessed immediately by A&E doctors and if he is suffering a heart attack referred straight to the cardiac team what you it's your we're all right mate don't you worry about me what changed on Route then to make it and his heart rate was 222 really wow hence I rank yeah he's definitely got something going on that's why I put him on O2 but he kept saying I'm fine I'm fine bless him but then to be halfway in as we come got in as we were coming in he he said um I'm scared did he really yeah he um but he said to me I don't I don't want to go in I just I'm I'm constantly in hospital and I'm just going to get stuck in there he was definitely going in after I cleared that foot path with that shovel you going in oh bless did you have your Christmas dinner yeah it's best it's the best thing about Christmas man you can't like not have Christmas din on Christmas did you when did you have your Christmas dinner when I got home when you got home yeah I didn't want it straighten away cuz you only get home and you're too tired to eat I I got home cuz they went to the In-laws yeah and they only had meat left they only had meat left yes I loveely sandwich how was that how was Turkey I didn't have it didn't have Christmas dinner I hate Christmas dinner I I just I just don't get it wow no so they were quite happy that I was working nights because that meant that they could have a full Christmas dinner even though they didn't enjoy it but they said they could have one they didn't enjoy it but they had it anyway no they had it anyway yeah they said the meat wasn't as nice as it was like said to be Christmas sounds like a disaster in your eyes no it's not it's really nice the excitement of Christmas day has passed and while most people are filling up on turkey sandwiches crew mates Laura Hickman and Vic Brown are waiting for their first first [Music] job all right just got to make sure it's stuck on properly stuck on stack on is it stack on darling go on then am I famous I hope so yes I'm not a patient no okay uh am I famous in TV yes cin am I local yes really yes oh you'd never guess I'm Lenny emry a is it yeah really that was too easy I think that was under 20 questions was it there's no more time for festive games though as their next emergency has just come through 999 activated so we're going to a 29y old female who was fainted and now shaking if they're shivering they might have an infection ction or well no it's probably cuz she's fainted and she's panicking now so she's shaking just going to PO it here I think yeah hi call for an ambulance thanks all right hi you sweet my name is Laura this is Vicki all right what's happened darling Oh okay just being really weird what's weird just really cold like in the back of goes down the SP yeah is that P all right have you taken any paracetamol or anything with it come back out having a drink and taking two new okay so cold my bones and everything all right we'll check your temperature it's probably more so the fact that you're cold is because you've got a high temperature so we we'll just roll that one out first 38 to should we get you off this we go so sweetheart listen listen listen right you've got a high temperature no no no listen you need to listen there's no point getting upset you need to listen Okay so abnormal body temperature is between 36 and a half and 37 and 1/2 yours is 38.2 so that's quite High all right so the reason you're shaking is that your body trying to burn off that temperature and you feel more cold so you want to wrap up more but if we get your temperature back down to Northern lover you'll stop shaking all right promise so you've probably got one of the Christmas bugs that's going around viruses are quite common at Christmas due to the cold weather Christina was was quite poorly blessed when we got there with her high temperature and it was just taking hold of that little bit too much it's not the best thing you want really on uh around the Christmas season is to feel unwell have you had a lot of stress at work no I it's I like to sh with you night ah Welcome to our world yeah sweet where'd you work okay services oh yeah yeah Christina is how they spell your surname no with an X where's that from Cyprus Cyprus is gal yeah he yes any religion no just Greek Orthodox you know to tricky sh if you ever have a Greek friend you have to teach the way wait mine taught me the swear words and then she taught me like g g g yes yeah all of those S I love you and you love me a yeah can't wait to message my M was like just been to a ciate lady tested margar this was 5 years ago that's why I forgot most of it I think so wait to be honest I think you're just generally under the weather and I think you've caught whatever and you've got this MRA that's made things worse all right early night tued up in bed that's it m relief early night sleep food yeah that's our plans I don't know about yours one thing wey chy that with a Migra it you know does it it does excuse me I need to send a text message telling you it really does really any time I've got a headache yet me and my partner and you do that and then they'll believe it I think I've got a headache coming on I'm going that's all that's all the information I need to know from now on thank you no way who know right okie dokie are you happy with that then sweet yeah right then G see you later all right all the best bye [Music] bye I did not know that that natural I didn't want to know that natural remedy from I'm completely honest I don't think it's it's one that I'll be um be telling other patients maybe not [Music] tell what I tried the other day was um alcohol free beer yeah yeah I'm down with that you can get alcohol free gin now if you can believe it but it is 25 quid a bottle they're quite popular though is they yeah yeah I think they I think they're a really good [Applause] idea in Willen Hall crew mates Lo horabin and Dave Grantham are on a night shift new assignment F we got 74 year old M with back pain oh back injury After [Music] Fall the patient Bill lives alone and can't get up to open the door after his fall luckily the crew are able to let themselves in using a spare key from the key safe you behind the door yeah just let me go yeah you tell me when you're out the way buddy and I'll I'll come in you is that enough for me to get in now is it cool going Lo all right then how are we sir what's your name first of all real Bill my name's Dave and this is LZ okay hi Bill I think we've met before L yeah it's been a few years there you go I just remember the amputated leg Bill lost his leg seven years ago after stubbing his big toe his nail became infected and when the infection spread doctors decided to amputate to the knee what's happened today then bill um basically a black head and and u f off on the deck okay um and uh I I did at 999 okay and um and you're here as a result so do you remember anything before blacking out um remember if you felt dizzy or anything like that it's difficult to say okay and I've had more than one occasion where where I found myself in this situation L has visited bill before under similar circumstances and thinks she's identified one of the reasons for his fall this evening Are we more of a whiskey fan or more of a rosé fan thought it was Ros and work up to the whiskey right so how much of this bottle of whiskey have you had today oh not much so what's not much then that that much down so about half a bottle yeah not quite half a bottle near enough near enough and do you normally drink half a bottle in a day yes and do you have half a bottle of whiskey every day yes how long have you been drinking the whiskey for oh yeah years years do you think that with your whiskey you've lost your balance and Fallen to the floor or do you think you've actually lost Consciousness I think I actually lost Consciousness right cuz there's a difference here if we say we've we've blacked out and we've lost Consciousness we don't know what's happened and nobody seen what's happened that's great then we'll probably take you to the hospital but if it's a case that you consume alcohol every day you've done so today you're probably a bit off balance and you've slipped out your chair because we're a little bit intoxicated and we haven't blacked out then we're going to leave you at home because you're quite with it although you've had some whiskey the second just script that you have made yeah is about right right so we haven't lost Consciousness we've slipped out of the chair due to the whiskey I think so okay which isn't a problem cuz we've picked you up but we don't want to take you to hospital if we don't need to I think we need to stop drinking whiskey now for the rest of the evening okay because and I imagine having a leg amputated is probably going to make you bit more un steady trans transfering anyway and maybe the whiskey doesn't help bill doesn't need to be taken to hospital so there's not a lot to do except pack up and get their kit back onto the ambulance I thought we weren't having any more of that tonight well hey I can't let it go to rest well you could do if you really wanted [Music] to oh we said no more whiskey bill just said the same all he observations came back absolutely normal um so he thought that the best thing that he could do was to get himself off to bed and stop drinking I think initially I felt that he might pay attention but then when we came back and he started drinking again I just thought it fell on deaf ears now there's only you that can make a difference here bill we can stand here all will I can say you think you need to slow down a little bit but if you don't want to help yourself and you carry on drinking then you're going to be in a bad way aren't you I understand that I'm just saying bill you know it's your decision we can't tell you what to do it's just Our advice I I thoroughly understand what you're saying but I find it difficult difficult I completely understand Bill put it into practice I think you've had enough now for tonight it's bed time once we've gone I think you just need to go to bed all right because we've had this discussion I I'll drink that and then I'll go to bed you've heard My Views bill yeah and I suggest you don't have any more all L can do is hope that this time Bill will follow her advice right bill you take care nice to see you again all right but let's not make it a third time a you take care sir okay all right Bill all the best thank you you're very welcome all right take care stay after the whiskey he was nice enough wasn't he he was once he kind of come to terms with it I think he he took on board your advice didn't he yeah I get the feeling he will probably agree with us and then just keep drinking which you know it's fine he's going to do what he wants to do at the end of the day um I just hope he doesn't hurt himself in the process in the future yeah this is the main concern isn't it [Music] [Music] paramedic Laura Hickman and technician Vic Brown are on shift together and have just received an emergency call out breathing problems fighting for breath she's on a nebulizer [Applause] blesser that one with the door open their patient 75-year-old Gladis has multiple health problems daughter Tina called the ambulance when she started fighting for breath oh you guys all right oh she's struggling at you so you said your mom's got if and COPD CD did you suffer with anything else bronis yeah lung cancer JY an attack okay and you said she got AF didn't you yeah all right sweet the grandmother of 20 lives with daughter Tina as she suffers with so many medical conditions so has she been like it all day or was it just come on come on again I had to have ambage yesterday morning it happened yesterday and they stabilized it and it's come back again I'd rather go in so they can stabilize her for a longer period of time than just 24 hours if that makes sense yeah all right because of gl's chronic lung disease and irregular heartbeat she was really struggling to breathe um it was really quite important that we got her back to hospital so so we could stabilize her some more what's the mobility like not very good get there to the commode and then to the chair that's fine yeah will you what darling well I think it's probably best for you darling cuz if you were like this yesterday and you like it again today ain't you seems like something's going on but we can't fix but the hospital can okay so what we'll do is we'll we'll take in on the blue lights so the doctor can see straight away get a stabilized and then they can always move her out then but I'd rather her be stable first all right that's my plan I know you I know you don't want to go darling but if we don't go today it'll probably end up AC in again tomorrow won't it and we don't want that do we don't go at all I know you don't want to go at all [Music] but you can't stay like that all night can you sweet you what darling you've stopped like it before I can't force you to go however I can highly recommend recommend it yeah yeah so you going to come with us all right sweet tomorrow but we need to get you onto our carry chair okay I'm here to help you you fed up I bet you are let's try and get you fix though way yeah all right darling Oh step that's it up the ramp we go glades you okay you're fine you stand up as best as you can I've got you I've got you oh I've got you don't worry I that's it right we're going to set you right up okay all right sweetheart I don't think I need to listen to you chest to wear your we do I hey no and you wanted to stop at home didn't you I'm going to give you sweetheart an injection into your arm cuz I couldn't find your Vine okay hey I'm I bet you are I'm a p I'll only pin you once more I promise I'm going to give you a steroid all right hopefully up them Airways I'll try my best not to Sharp scratch all right sweet that's it that's it I feel sorry for me daugh going to a party oh don't you feel sorry for her it's okay how old are you glad no yeah [Music] 75 you don't look a day over 50 [Music] now concerned about Gladis condition Laura calls ahead to hospital hello samel I've got an alert for you please it's a 75y old female with an exacerbation of COPD pulse she's 122 but it's irregular she's got if about five minutes all right mate cheers bye by bye was she this bad last night no they manag to um set s by now wey yeah still weeing like a trooper blesser oh me me we're here now sweetheart all so we don't mess about do we right let's get these off you my darling all right m I'll get out right in there Gladis will now be admitted to hospital where they can stabilize her breathing young Daisy who went into diabetic shock got better quickly she and her parents are in regular contact with her nurses and Daisy has done such a good job keeping on top of her diabetes she's won an award at school for how well she manages it Frank who was having chest pains but didn't want to go to hospital was having a heart attack he spent four weeks in hospital before being allowed home and was soon feeling back to his usual sociable self [Music] 29-year-old Christina was treated for a high temperature shaking and a headache in the aftermath of a busy Christmas she followed the paramedics advice and after some rest and some more paracetamol she was soon on the [Music] mend Bill who fell down at home after Christmas didn't suffer any injuries after being advised to cut back on alcohol bill made a big effort to do so and managed managed to reduce his drinking grandmother of 20 Gladis was kept in hospital overnight over the following weeks she made repeat visits to A&E with her many health problems including suffering a heart attack although she was still generally poorly she was visited regularly by neighbors and family are we ready to goe now we are come on [Music]
