After arrest and before trial comes jail. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. >> [music] [music] >> Working here in the jail is almost like the weather here in the panhandle of the great state of [music] Texas. It could be calm and sunny one minute and thunderstorms and tornadoes the next. Just prior to us coming on shift, Hemphill Police Department brought in a subject that attempted to run out of the sally port [music] out the sally port door. Uh he was recaptured and brought in. >> [groaning and screaming] >> We're going to see if we can get him through the booking process. >> [music] >> Hey, we just got out of muster. What happened with this guy over here? Well, I unloading getting him out of the car he decided he was going to run from me out of the sally port into the parking lot trying to make it to the perimeter fence. What did you have him on to begin with? Well, I we got called for a red car and they were messing with the car. I was able to hear some yelling and some large weeds across the street. When I looked over where the yelling was, I saw the top of his head out there. He was hiding laying in the weeds. So, he has a I ran him he had a blue warrant out of Lubbock County for forgery with an an escape risk. All right. I guess we will take care of him from here. Sounds good. >> All right. You okay? Okay. He seems pretty compliant right now, so 175 [music] Okay, Renee, this is what we're going to do, okay? Got some sandwiches for you, okay? Got a cup of water for you. Okay? And we'll be able to get you processed, okay? Thank you. Can I have a drink? Yeah, try here. Try not to destroy your cup so we can fill it back up for you, okay? And as long as you cooperate with us right now, you know, don't bang on the window, don't bang on the door or anything like that. >> Okay, man. I I don't want to We got to do what we got to do, you know? All right, cool. Thank you. >> Okay. My phone, my phone. You're good. Thank you. Thank you. He's a whole lot more coherent than I thought he would be. As long as he keeps going the way he's going, he might be all [music] right. So, we'll uh get him processed. We'll try to get him showered, get him booked to the back. Hey guys, come here and look at this real quick. You can see Mr. Mr. Kevin when he came in. Okay. PD just came in. Emptying out his holster and stuff. Slip out of the door. Oh, there he goes. And he's done. Oh, jeez. Yeah. He didn't get as far as I thought he would. Yeah. I don't know where he thought he was going to go. He's inside of enclosed fence. Mhm. You know, there's there's nowhere for him to go other than outside the sally port. And the fact that his hands are with his hands behind his back so he can't climb the fence and go anywhere, so there's no point. He had already slipped his cuffs once in front of him. Okay, I I got you. That's what the big deal was with an escape risk tag on his warrant. So, that's what made it even worse. I got you. >> So, we'll start getting ready for the process of getting him in and stuff and get the fingerprints done. All right. Sounds good. >> [music] >> So, what's the reason for you being in jail today? Uh drunk and I had a warrant. Yeah? Do you remember what happened when you got here? Really? The PD officer brought you in, you got in the car and took off running with the handcuffs still behind your back. Mhm. I didn't do that. No? Little bit of everything or >> Yeah. All right, bud. We'll just have a seat over here and he'll get you hooked up with your wrist band and stuff and we'll get you going, okay? All right. They're going to go ahead and walk you down now, okay? Go ahead and grab your box with your name on it. There you go. Now, Officer Scott's going to walk y'all down, get y'all into a house. Good luck, Renee. Thank you. Now, Renee came in and he was a little unruly. Uh decided he wanted to run from the officer that brought him in. He sobered up a little bit and got him through the booking process. He's now going back to the back to go to his new house. So, he can see the judge in the morning. I've been a detention officer for 12 years. The last eight of which I spent with Midland County and thoroughly enjoy it. I honestly don't see myself doing anything else. All right, [music] turn around and face me. Shoes? The gentleman we have on the wall, Aaron, I haven't seen him in 4 and 1/2 5 years. You get off of that crap, you'd be surprised how much you come back to you. I've been working in jails for 12 years. You'll be all right if you get off of it. So, my understanding is, man, once you come down off of it I'll work with you. As long as I stay calm and I keep my hands up. Don't lock me in a cell, you know. Please. I got I spent 4 years in a cell. Locked 24/7. I don't want to go in a cell. The problem is you're detoxing right now, man. Yeah. You detoxed the other day. I explained to him I said, "Look, I got to put you in detox. I promised him that if he can give me 4 quiet hours, I'll go ahead and let him come out of Okay. We'll just put him like in a detox for right now and then we'll go from there. Do a little more room, big window? Yes. >> Okay. We'll do that then. And then >> GoPro, where are you going? So, I got you a bigger cell with a window. Like I said, man, give me about 4 good hours and I'll get you out of there, all right? All right. They're going to get him out of there. All right, brother. This entire time I've been working here, he's been coming in and out of here. Um he's hit and miss. He'll come in, he'll be fine for a while. If I had to guess, he's probably going to continue to come here as long as I work here. How you feeling? Good. So, they had you in the hospital the other day? Yeah, my I I came in to work the next day you were already out of booking and I found out you were in the hospital, so. I guess I went A wall. I want to take a drug class. All right, thanks. All right, brother. Yeah. If you need anything, let me know. Yeah. I have seen people like him come in and out of this place. >> [music] >> The road that he's on is not a healthy one. Now that he has a kid, I hope he focuses on that kid and and makes [music] some changes. I work for the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office in the intake division. I've been here for a year now. All right, sounds like we have a loud male [music] incoming. We're going to go check it out and see what we got. Scoot over a little bit, man. Right here. What are you here for? He has a warrant. He said he was smoking weed. I think he's on something else though. I think these handcuffs are fine. You're going to be cool? Yeah, man. All right, man. Relax. Relax. Put your hand on the wall. I got it. >> Get back Get back down. Huh? Get back down. I'll leave it there. All right. Keep your hands on the wall so you hear that door shut. Do you understand me? Yes, sir. All right, man. So, what exactly did you bring him in for? Well, he had a warrant out of Harris County. The car initially dropped. There was a suspicious person. I located him. I get his attention, get him to walk over to my patrol car when he's like, "Hey, you know, I'm out of truck, side of gas. Can you give me a courtesy transport to get some gas?" I'm like, "Yeah, that's fine." He's like, "Just to let you know, I got a warrant." I ran him. He had a good warrant out of Harris County for burglary of a building. So. Okay. Think he's on drugs or he didn't Uh I asked him, he was sweating profusely. I was like, "Hey, have you taken anything like that?" He said, "No, I just smoked weed." But I I think there's something else in the system cuz Yeah. >> he just that wasn't acting right. All right, man. Once he was seen by medical, he was taken straight to [music] a padded cell due to being overly aggressive, not following orders, and [music] we don't know what kind of drugs he's on. And he'll be there until a mental health professional can talk to him and clear him from that cell. >> [music] >> Just relax your fingers, okay? Mhm. Hey, Carlos. Do you remember coming in? Yeah. You do? You remember being I'm nauseous. Uh-huh. You remember that, huh? Why were you that? >> I had just drank two bottles of wine. That's all you had? You didn't have no pills or nothing? I don't do pills. You don't? Oh yeah, my fault. I had Oh yeah, yeah. >> [clears throat] >> Abilify. What does it do? That the happy pill. It's just like a pill It's a mood It's a mood stabilizer. Okay. And then I popped uh two handle bars. What's a handle bar? A handle bar is Xanax. Okay. I'm depressed. I'm frustrated. >> Depressed about what? Well, I'm about to lose my house, man. I'm two about to be three months backed rent. Ain't got no job. Can't nobody give me a job with my felonies and everything like that. So, what what am I supposed to do? So, how did you get this warrant from Harris County? Man, I broke into a stupid ass car while we didn't even get no money out of it. And I wasn't even the one that did it. My homeboy did it. I just popped it open and so I am guilty. I popped the open the the the the what you call it. Mhm. And then he went in. The door you popped open. Okay. And he took like 300. I don't know. He didn't even give me a dollar. If they bond you out today, what's to say you're not going to be back in here next week, man? >> here. I'll give you a hug and a kiss. Nah, you ain't going to do that. Nah, I'm not coming back, man. Come on. You got to do like this little pivot. I got to love you, man. We're going to go back out now. We ain't going to do all that. Come on, we're going to go back over here. Hey, just step inside. Hey, so when you told me that that you can't get a job cuz you're cuz you're a felon. >> But I'm going to school though to become a computer engineer. I used to be one of the biggest kingpins in the hood. I got the best plugs and the best connections in the whole A's town. Can't nobody hold my toes, but >> [sighs] >> it's so simple just to be what I am. Just trying to be a better man. That's it. That's not for me no more. I'm finished. [music] I want to be humble, make a million dollars, and get my own stuff from my own people. My mom buy her house, buy me a house, and lay back. All right, man. Just hang out here and then uh And then can you let me go? Hey, can I get some more water, please? Yeah, give me a minute. Frequent flyer here. He's been here several times. I hope he stays out of trouble and doesn't come back to see us. I was born and raised here in El Paso. [music] After graduating high school, went to the military. Decided to come back to El Paso. I love this [music] town. It's nice living in living close to the border. You know, having both cultures. It's a great place to live. Don't put your feet on the red line, man. Hands on the wall. No, the other way, man. Let me search you like that. What are you here for, man? Shoplifting. Shoplifting? Yeah, we'll let you make a phone call, man. I I have to get some numbers off my phone. It's resealed, man. Once the bag is sealed, that's it. You should have done it before your property got put away. They told me they told me they told me they were going to. Take your jacket, man. >> [music] >> Let's go. We'll let you make a phone call. Is this yours? Is this your property? Phone right here, to the left, all the way down there. You'll try? You want to try? Yeah. All right, man. Just go on and use the phone right there, man. No, not this one. The one right there, the black one. Is it going to be a local number, man? Yeah. Do me a favor, make sure with this guy that he doesn't try to dial 911 cuz he made a threat and I don't want to have to have him charged with a 911 violation for making a false emergency call, all right? Thank you. And now you're not understanding you're going to call 911 or whatever? No, is it? Yeah, I want to like I don't know I don't even know who to call 911 or something. >> you know now. That was it. And if you do, then you're going to get another charge. Oh, yeah. Huh? Like I said, all right, man. Make your phone call. Just have a seat, all right, man. Oh, I just did like I don't know any other number, just 911, you know, like >> Okay. There's bail bond companies right there. Maybe they can help you out bonding out. All right, just have a seat, all right, man. What's our number here cuz it's not Mark II. Okay, it's him. What did we tell you about calling 911? I didn't call 911. I swear. That's PD's dispatch we just got off the phone with. They already verified that the 911 call came out of this line just right now. We're telling you. I I told you. I warned you. >> call 911. I told you, man. Get inside the cell, man. Get inside the cell. I warned you, man. I told you. >> I really I told you. I wouldn't do that to you. I wouldn't do that to my family. Okay, buddy. Listen, buddy. When you crossed over with Officer Sanchez was bringing you a caller to let you make your phone call and take your picture. Yeah. You made the verbal threat that you were going to call 911. What? >> I didn't threaten you with anything. Well, you did it, okay? You're the only one on the phone. 911? Yeah. It's that simple. If you guys told me not to, why would why would I want to get Uh we don't We don't know why you did it. I want to I want to I want to get out of this place. You need to just wait until the deputy gets here and you can give him your statement and he'll give him our statement. Can I Can I call just a family member real quick? No, you're not going to make any more phone calls until the deputy interviews you. That's it. Criminal's going to get turned over to deputies. That's how it's going to go on and we'll take you from there if he's going to get added charge or not. He came from a simple classy to now possibly a felony. What's that? Let's go, man. Come over here. Want number one. All I'm doing is trying to get out of here, you know? One step on top. You told me specifically not to call 911. Exactly. And what happened? You You think I'm a cop? Like I didn't. You made that little threat, man. You saying Oh, you know, I don't have any numbers, but >> That was just I know I know you you tried to make it maybe like a joke, but >> But I didn't call 911. You're going to luck out because since you only made the one call to 911, they can't charge you with abusive calls unless you do it again. I don't know what happened, but But it happened because you dialed 911. >> Sorry. Okay. But if you do it again, they will charge you. You're going to time serve tomorrow morning after you go to municipal court. I don't want to stay here all night. You want to make a call? All right, man. Number 911, man. Make sure nobody else is on the phone so in case he does dial 911 again, we know it's you. Well, I don't know what is running through his head. If he doesn't straighten out, he's going to keep coming back. And the doors [music] open up and they lead me outside. I'm going to go home to my family tonight. I've been thinking about my home. I've been thinking about my kids. I don't [music] want to be alone. I got to get up out of this. Give me out. Just give me out. >> [music]
