Kayie went upstairs and she screamed cuz someone's in the room. She ran downstairs and I kept calling her name and she wouldn't answer. Then I saw the guy and then I opened the door for a second and I saw this guy and he was not insanely tall but he's wearing all black and like this mask which is covering his forehead. >> As it relates to murder in the first degree for the murder of Kaylee Gonzalez, how do you plead guilty or not guilty? >> Guilty. Police discoveries could be horrible at any moment. Like when they found a psycho mom who didn't hesitate to break her own property over her child eating. >> Come back. The house is trash and don't want to hurt nobody. >> Kimberly, I'm not going to no house. >> No. >> I thought no. Put this down here. >> To a woman who actually started twerking mid arrest during a birthday disturbance. I'm >> going TO SHOW YOU. LET ME SHOW YOU WHAT'S GOING ON. STEP BACK. IT'S MY BIRTHDAY MOTHER WEEKEND. >> Each one left behind shock and one undeniable fact. Cops revealing horrifying discoveries. Starting with this silent house, cops stepped inside and found a scene no one could ever forget. On November 13th, 2022 in Moscow, Idaho, police were called after a resident discovered the other housemates completely unresponsive. The case involved four university students, Madison Mogan, Kaylee Gonalves, Ethan Chapen, and Zanna Kernodal. And what unfolded that day would shock the entire community. One of the surviving girls revealed she had seen the suspect that night, immediately catching the officer's attention. That single detail would become a crucial lead in the investigation. >> You You were in that room. >> My room, not Santa's room. My room. >> And your room is this one right here. Next. That one is in this room. >> Floor room. >> Second floor. Okay. >> All I heard was I heard go upstairs like, "Okay, I'm going to go to sleep now cuz she's going upstairs." Also, >> you heard who go upstairs? >> Kayie and the dog Murphy >> and upstairs to the very top. >> Yeah, that's where her room is. >> Okay. And then all of a sudden her walking up, I heard her scream and she ran downstairs cuz she saw someone. That's what I'm pretty sure she said. She someone's here and she screamed and just ran downstairs and I called for her name but I jumped up and locked my door cuz I was so scared. Um and then in the I heard someone in the bathroom and I heard her crying and I heard some guy say that you're going to be okay. I'm going to help you. And I kept calling her name but she wasn't answering. And then I opened the door for a second and I saw this guy and he was not insanely tall, but he's wearing all black and like this mask which is covering his forehead and his mouth. And I locked the door and I called and I didn't know what to do. So >> this is at 4 >> 4 a.m. Yes. >> And then I just ran down. >> You left. You left here. >> Yeah. I left my room down to room. She's that one with the white blinds at the very bottom. >> I ran down there and we talked and I just we just locked the door. We didn't think anything of it. We're like nothing happens in Moscow. So we just like tried to go to bed and then we woke up and it was weird because none of our roommates were up and we called all of them. They were not waking up and so me and like this is weird. So I called and come over and then that's when all this happened. >> Um you're who all lives here with you? >> Me that woman right there. >> Um >> who's Santa? >> Santa is the girl in there. There's a girl that lives this far. Okay. How do you spell her name? >> Z. I mean X A N A. [panting] >> Do you know she has a middle name? >> Alexis, I think. >> Do you know what her last name is? >> K. I don't know how to spell it really. K. You know R N O D L E >> K A E R >> K E R >> K E R >> N O >> N O L E >> D L E. Okay. X A N A >> X A N A. Okay. >> He doesn't actually live here, but he's here like all the time. >> There is a male that lives here. And he >> he doesn't actually he's from Louisiana, I believe. >> He's in there right now, >> but he doesn't he doesn't live here, but he's here a lot. [snorts] Um and then there's Maddie, Mgan, and Kaye up top. I don't know where they're at, though. >> Maddie, >> Mgan who? >> Kayie Gonzalez. She's the girl that I was talking about, Kaylee, who I just heard upstairs running up back downstairs. >> And um the guy that lives here, his name was what? Or he he's you? >> Ethan. >> Ethan. And >> as she gave her statement, the girl revealed a detail so chilling it caught the officer completely off guard. Even someone trained for the worst couldn't hide their shock. >> All right, describe describe the guy that you saw. >> I don't think he was. He was a little bit taller than me. And um I couldn't really see much of him, but I he was I'm almost positive he was wearing this whole black outfit and he had this mask that was just over his forehead and over his mouth and he didn't say anything to me like at all. I just shut the door and locked it cuz I didn't know what to do. And I think he went out like the side door, the sliding door in the kitchen that goes out to the backyard. Okay. >> And then I didn't know anything else. So, I called and I was like, I just need to come downstairs and find you cuz I don't know where anyone else is. And I called Maddie. I called Dana. I called Kayie. Nobody answered it. >> Okay. >> The girl recounted the events of the previous night in painstaking detail. The officer listened closely, pressing gently to confirm the critical points. >> And Ethan's also UI student. >> Yes, he is. >> And you don't see him here right now? You see, but pretty sure he's in that room. >> I think so. I don't know if that hold me. I don't know for sure. >> All right. And then um the two additional roommates that aren't here right now >> that that aren't here with you. >> Yeah. >> Uh what are their names? >> Maddie Mogan. M A D I E [clears throat] M O G E N. And then Kaye. K A Y L E E Gave. It's G O N C L A V E S. I think that's how you spell that. >> How old is Maddie? 21 or 20. 21 or 22. I can't remember. They're both over 21, but I don't know. >> Uh, I think so. >> How old is Kaylee? >> Over 21. I believe she's 21 or 22. Sorry. I don't quite remember. >> That's okay. You're doing great. I'm asking a lot of you. So, I appreciate you. You're doing doing very well. Um, >> do you do you know if the other two girls are upstairs or not? >> Um, right now what we got to do is we got to process this whole thing. >> Um, I I don't know what I'd be permitted to understand. >> Okay, let's go back. I just want to make sure we're getting everything. So, you're sure at about 4 this morning? >> Yes, it was 4:00 4th. You first noticed a guy. >> Well, I first noticed Katie go upstairs and scream and run downstairs. >> So, before this morning, went upstairs. >> Yeah. >> To the way top. >> Yes. To her room with Murphy the dog. >> Okay. >> And you heard Kayie scream? >> I heard her scream and run like run as fast as she could downstairs and she said someone's here. >> She's uh ran downstairs. >> Yes, I can hear you can hear everything. I much to run downstairs really fast and then I heard Murphy barking a lot. >> Okay. >> And then I heard her going to the I think it was the bathroom and I remember her sobbing. And I just remember hearing this guy's voice and I didn't recognize saying, "You're going to be okay. I'm going to help you." But it wasn't like I don't know how to explain it. Like it wasn't in like a nice way. It was like a weird way. Like a weird tone. >> You're going to be okay. I'm going to help you. >> Yeah. Then you didn't hear anything from Kaye anymore? >> No. I didn't hear anything. >> So then I kept calling her name. I called on my phone. I called Zana, Maddie, and Kaylee. None of them answered. So then I opened up the door to look and that's when I saw the guy passed by. He looked at me, but he didn't come towards me or say anything, which was really confusing to me. I I don't understand that. And I'm pretty sure he went out the side door. And then I called and said she thought maybe there was a fire or like a firework. We didn't know. We heard this. She heard this loud noise and there was a light, I guess. >> Did you hear like a pop? Like a bang? >> I don't know. Did you hear a thing? >> It's what what she heard. That's what she heard. >> The other surviving girl was brought in to answer questions, offering insight into the timeline of the previous night. Her account quickly became a key piece of the investigation. >> Left, please. 67. >> Okay. >> I don't think I ever heard a bang. I didn't think anything about fire or firework. I told her I don't think I heard anything with that, but I also was kind of in and out of it cuz I was super scared and it was really I was really tired. Um, and that's when I called and I told her, "Can I I need to come to your room because she was the only one that was entering me." So, I just ran down there and for a second I stopped and I saw Zana passed out and I thought maybe she was just like sleeping or something. I didn't think anything cuz I was so out of it and I went into room and we just fell asleep and then we woke up this morning and no one was waking up at all. Lightning was answering which was really weird cuz all of us wake up around like 9 or 10 and then I called the truck to come check and came here first and I told him what happened and then he looked in the room and he didn't get out and help. >> Okay. The guy that you saw and it was it was dark, right? Or were there lights on the house? >> I think there were lights on in the house at least. Okay. I don't really know what he looked like cuz he had a mask, but he wasn't like super tall. >> How tall are you? >> I'm 5'10", I think it was maybe my height, an inch or two higher or lower. I can't really remember. >> So about 6 foot. >> I I think so. Down there. >> How was he built? Fat, skinny, stocky. >> More like skinny, but like basketball player kind of skinny. Like not too skinny, but like almost skinny in a way. That's what I think. I don't know for sure. >> And then the voice he said uh when he said those words, you just you didn't recognize that voice before. >> I didn't know I didn't recognize him or his voice. And then I also couldn't see him, but I didn't recognize that voice at all. Didn't even cross my mind of who that could be. >> Did you guys have a party last night, too? Or >> not tonight, but there was a and we had like a formal thing beforehand. That was two days ago. Okay. Is there anything that popped out about that event that was concerning? >> No, I mean I went to Ethan to Z and Z went there. I was there for a little bit and then I went to my friend house down the street and then I came back home with my friend. Everything was fine. Nothing weird at all. and sold for you. >> Okay. >> When the trial opened, disturbing details from this high-profile murder case were finally revealed. With the evidence laid out in court, Brian Coberger, the suspect, had no way out, >> uh, and then leave several times. in approximately 4:05 that morning. Defend's car had entered that area, was leaving, stopped at the intersection of King and Queen Road, did a U-turn, and the state's evidence would show that defendant's car came back and parked behind and above the 1122 King Road residence. The state believes that its evidence would then show that um the defendant entered the residence of 11:22 through the kitchen sliding door on the back side of the residence, which is the side of the residence that would uh face the area above where the defendant's car was parked. Defendant entered the residence, went to the third floor, and with a knife killed Madison Bogan and Ke's office. The defendant as he left that room for whatever reason ended up leaving or the sheath for a KBAR knife was left on the bed next to Madison Motton's body. And I can jump ahead. That sheath was tested by the Idaho State Police Forensic Lab and single source male DNA was found on the snap of that sheath as well as blood from both Kaylee and Madison and other trace evidence. But it's important to note single source male DNA was on the snap of that sheath. The state's evidence would show that Zana Canodal was still awake at this time. in fact had taken a door dash order not long before this started. Her room was not on the third floor. It was on the second floor on the west side. As the defendant was either coming down the stairs or leaving, he encountered Zana and he ended up killing her also with a large knife. He's in Chapen. boyfriend was asleep in their bedroom in her bedroom and the defendant killed him as well with a large knife. Each victim suffered multiple wounds. I will state for the record that there is no evidence there was any sexual component or sexual assault on any of the victims. I want to make that clear so there's no speculation. There were two other roommates in the house and they were already asleep. During the course of this, one of those roommates arro awoke, looked out her door, not knowing what was going on, and saw the defendant who was dressed in black with black belt cob on holding some sort of container in his hand. And she saw him leave the house through the direction of the kitchen where that sliding door is that I mentioned before. At approximately 4:20 that morning, so this would have been 15 minutes or so later, Vinn's car is seen on a surveillance camera for 1112 King Road, which is immediately next door to the west of 11:22, leaving the area at a high rate of speed. And if the court were to see that or anybody in this courtroom were to see that, you can see the court the car almost loses control as it makes the corner, heads north, and then turns to go south on Winta, which is one of the only ways to get out of that part of town. The evidence would show that following that, the defendant in his Elantra drove south of Moscow. We know that he drove on the back roads because there are surveillance cameras on the main highways, Highway 95. >> As the truth began to surface, Brian remained unnervingly calm. But when concrete evidence was revealed, it became the basis for his arrest. >> Mr. Co Cobberger proceeded to finish his semester of studies at Washington State University and returned to Pennsylvania for the holidays. Law enforcement at this point were aware of Mr. Coberger had been accessing information about him, were trying to find him. They located him in Pennsylvania and they conducted what's called a trash pull. Uh during the nighttime hours, agents of the FBI who assisted immensely with this case. um working with the sanitation department back in this neighborhood in Pennsylvania uh took cra trash trash that had been set out on the street for collection sent the contents of that from the Pennsylvania residents of the defendant's parents um to the Idaho State for laboratory where the lab experts there were able to identify DNA on a Q-tip as coming from the father of the person whose DNA was found on the ninth sheath that was next to Madison Mo Logan's body and the bed. Subsequently, an arrest warrant was issued here in Idaho and a search warrant was issued in the state of Pennsylvania with the assistance not only of the FBI but Pennsylvania State Police. Mr. Cobberger was arrested at his parents' home to return to Idaho. Upon his return to Idaho, a DNA sample was taken from him and it matched the DNA found on the knife sheath next to Mattiey's body at the crime scene. I can tell the court public the weapon itself, the knife has not yet been recovered. I can tell the court that the defendant's apartment in Pullman was searched as well as his office. Spartan would be a kind characterization. There was virtually nothing there. Nothing of evidentary value was found. And of course, we're now talking 6 8 weeks after the time of the killings. In Pennsylvania, the defendant's car was seized and it was actually pretty much disassembled internally, and it also had been cleaned. There was a bucket of cleaner right beside it. Um, I think we can all look to our own cars, you know, in those compartments in the doors. You try to keep them clean where you put stuff. There's always some degree of crud in there. They were spotless. Defend's car had been meticulously cleaned inside. And the state would present to the jury that that was part of the defendant's plan in covering up this. The defendant has studied crime. In fact, he did a a detailed paper on crime scene processing uh when he was working uh on his pre-doate degrees and he had that knowledge and skill. So, your honor, at the end, uh, the state submits that the evidence that I've given just a quick overview of. >> Brian's cold, unbothered admission to the gruesome crimes stunned the entire courtroom. The lack of remorse sent chills through everyone present. >> All right. Based on the state's uh proper and importantly based upon defendants uh explicit admission to committing these crimes, the court finds there is a factual basis. Therefore, uh, with respect to count one, burglary felony, how do you plead Mr. Coberger guilty or not guilty? >> Guilty. >> As to count two, murder in the first degree as it relates to uh the murder of Madison Mogan, how do you plead guilty or not guilty? >> Guilty. >> As to count three, as it relates to murder in the first degree for the murder of Kaylee Gonzalez, how do you plead guilty or not guilty? >> Guilty. As to count four, the first-degree murder of Zana Kernod Kernodal, pardon me, a human being, how do you plead guilty or not guilty? >> Guilty. >> As to count five, uh the first degree murder of Ethan Chapen, a human being, how do you plead guilty or not guilty? >> Guilty. >> Right. Court will find that the defendant understands the nature of the charges and uh each offense and the possible consequences to him of his guilty plea. Court finds that there is a factual basis for the plea and that finds the defendant believes the plea to be in his best interest. I find the plea the plea was given freely voluntarily and was intelligently made. I accept the plea. I direct that it be entered. I'll continue the matter for sentencing in this case. Um, I think >> with Brian Coberger's guilty plea, the case reached its grim conclusion. The court delivered its sentence, finally closing the chapter on one of the most chilling crimes in recent memory. This was often challenging, and I recall in one case he said that the best he could come up with was the defendant had good penmanship. Truth be told, I'm unable to come up with anything redeeming about Mr. Coberger because his grotesque acts of evil have buried and hidden anything that might have been good or intrinsically human about him. His actions have made him the worst of the worst. Even in pleading guilty, his giving nothing hinting of remorse or redemption, nothing suggesting even a recognition or understanding, let alone regret for the pain that he has caused. and therefore I will not attempt to speak about him further other than to simply sentence him so that he is forever removed from civilized society and accordingly based upon his conduct and based upon the record before this court recognizing the standards that govern this court's sentencing decisions as set forth in state v2ill I hereby sentence Mr. Coberger as follows. On count one, burglary, 10 years fixed, zero zero years indeterminant. I also impose a fine of $50,000. Count two, first-degree murder of Madison Mogan. I sentence the defendant to a fixed term of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, a fine of $50,000, and a civil penalty of $5,000 payable to the family of the victim. On count three for first-degree murder of Kaylee Gonzalez, I sentence the defendant to a fixed term of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, a fine of $50,000, and a civil penalty of $5,000 payable to the victim of the family or to the family of the victim, pardon me. On count four for the first degree murder of Xanna Kernodal, I sentenced the defendant to a fixed term of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. a fine of $50,000 and a civil penalty of $5,000 payable to the family of the victim. On count five of the first-degree murder of Ethan Chapen, I sentenced the defendant to a fixed term of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, a fine of $50,000, and a civil penalty of $5,000 payable to the family of the victim. The sentences on counts 1 2 3 4 and five shall run consecutively to one another. Restitution will be left open for 60 days. Defendant will be uh required to submit a DNA sample and a right thumb printition to the Department of Corrections and comply with the DNA database act. I ref I remand the defendant to the custody of the Idaho State Board of Corrections for to be imprisoned in an appropriate facility and execution of the sentence where he will remain until [clears throat] he dies. While some cases shock an entire community, others show how quickly tempers can spiral out of control, revealing that chaos can strike in ways both chilling and surprisingly ordinary. If you enjoyed the video, please give us a thumbs up. On July 29th, 2023 in Athens, Clark County, officers responded after a woman named Kimberly thrashed her mother's bathroom because her twin daughters ate her cereal. >> Hi. How you doing? >> Good. Where's Kimberly at? There she is. Since she want to go to jail. So >> she said she want to go to jail. >> Coming here acting crazy. >> What you doing, girl? >> Look at here. >> Through the stuff behind come back. The house is trash and don't know. >> And I don't want to hurt nobody. >> Okay. >> Y'all take her on this time. You don't been here before. Have you been here? >> Yeah. I've dealt with Kimberly a bunch. >> She don't She not on my lease. Take her on. >> Okay. >> And he taking my money. >> Shoot. She ain't had no money. She don't get nothing. >> Can you go into the living room for me? >> She don't get nothing but look in the bathroom. >> I'm about to look. You can find no more money. >> She take my money cuz she know I'm this. >> Are you trying to leave? >> I got Are you trying to leave? >> No. >> Okay. What are you trying to do? >> I don't know. She keep trying to lock me up. She got >> you see what she did. >> Can you go on into the living room, please? Thank you. Why are you packing a suitcase? >> Cuz I'm leaving. >> Okay. >> She said I called the police and I can't stay here no more. Okay. >> Call the police. >> You want to go to the hospital? >> I don't care where you see me. I don't care. He called the police. >> I know. >> I'll go to the hospital. >> Have you been taking your meds like you're supposed to? >> Yes, ma'am. >> When's the last time you took them? >> Um, every month. >> You just take them every month. You go to Advantage and get the shot? >> Yes, ma'am. >> All right. When's the last time you had it? >> Look, can you please just let me out of here, please? We're going to When's the last time you had your shot? >> When was the last time I had my shot? >> Yeah. >> I don't have no shot. I don't >> You said you take your meds once a month. >> Once a month. >> Okay. When's the last time you took it? >> Can you please just let me out of here? >> Yeah, that's going to happen. But I need you to answer some questions so I can get you some help. >> Once a month I take my time. >> When are you due for another one? >> I'm I'll do it once a month. Um once a month. >> No need. >> Um every month. >> Okay. So it's almost August. So when are you due for it? Like what what day out of the month do you take your shot or take your meds? >> Um every month, >> right? What day? >> Every month. Well, I don't know what day. >> Is it like the first of the month? >> The 15th. >> During questioning, Kimberly seemed calm and composed, but that calm didn't last long. In an instant, her behavior shifted, catching everyone off guard. >> I get my other stuff. >> What other stuff? >> In here. >> Well, if you're going to the hospital, then you're probably not going to be packing everything. I'm not going to hospital. >> You're Kimberly. >> I'm not going to no hospital. >> No. >> Not going to hospital. Put this down. >> Get out of here. >> Not going to let you. >> Turn around. >> Turn it down. Hey, stop. >> Stop. >> Take your own out of here. Don't come back. >> I will never come back. >> Don't come back. You're not on me. >> I won't never come back. I'm dead. I'm not going to the hospital. >> Don't come back. I'm not good. >> Yeah, >> Kimberly, stop it. >> You doing stuff that >> you get. >> Yeah. Yeah. Put your face against the wall. >> That's enough. always trying to me. >> Hey, you're not helping. >> Okay. >> Is that TV broken? >> I hope not. >> All right, let's go out to the car. >> Can you get him up first? >> Walk out to the car. >> I need >> We'll figure that out in a minute. I'm not going to let you stand here and scream at her. So, come on. me with the hospital. >> Nope. You're going you're going to jail now. >> I'm not going back to the hospital for nobody. >> I'll talk to you in a minute. You're going to the jail. That's what you're doing. >> I am so scared. >> It's okay. >> Move. >> Do you have anything on you >> that's going to poke me, sick me, or anything illegal? Spread your feet. >> Spread your feet more. further. I need to be able to spread your feet out further. You need to spread your feet so I can search you. You got anything in your bra? >> No. >> Turn. All right. Have a seat. You're related to her, right? >> Once Kimberly was no longer inside, attention turned to the aftermath she left behind. Her mother walked the officer through the damage and revealed what had triggered the clash. >> Don't she need her part? There was some gas. >> I'm going to handle her stuff. >> Okay. >> Okay. Is the TV broke? >> I don't think so, ma'am. She did it. >> She did what? No, she >> Okay. >> Yeah, I'm not taking all that with me. I'm going to take her purse. >> Um, so the TV still works, though. Yes. >> Okay. You want me to help you lift it? >> All right. >> So, what was the fight over cereal? >> Mhm. So, >> who who own my cereal? >> Mhm. I didn't know it was her daughter. Her son. >> Mhm. >> But my son adopted. >> Mhm. >> Okay. So, he's out of town. He's out of town. He'll be back tomorrow. And so, I said, "Well, I didn't know the box. I didn't know they was yours." That's what she blows up about. >> Okay. And you used it to feed them. >> Yeah. >> Okay. What are their names? How old are y'all? You know your birthday. You're seven. What's your birthday? You don't know? Do you know their birthday? >> Did you buy the Do you buy the shower curtain stuff? >> Yeah. >> Okay. How much does that cost? >> Can you check to see if this I plugged it in? So, if you don't mind checking to see if it works. >> Yeah. Come here and knock it down. >> Remember, she did that when she brought the phone. I told her >> never let her come back. >> The color looks fine and it's working. Okay. Did she touch you at all today before I got here? >> No. >> Just broke the shower curtain. >> Well, who know who who owed her cereal? I said, "Well, I didn't know that was your the rice crispy. You got four boxes." So, I get a cereal from you know. I said, "Well, I buy you another box." Oh, I don't go down. >> She busted us. Thought we moved. >> Kimberly was charged with simple assault, family violence, and criminal trespass. Property damage. A single moment of poor judgment can have serious fallout. Just as Kimberly's actions backfired, this mother's behavior put her and her children in real. >> Why are you like stumbling around and stuff? I want to make sure that you're okay cuz you seem like you're >> I have vertigo. On August 29th, 2025, police were called to a Walmart after reports of a woman behaving strangely while accompanied by two young children. What they found quickly raised serious concerns. >> Hello. How you doing, man? >> How you doing? >> Good. I'm Officer Dis Grove City Police Department. Uh we got a call about you. Sounds like you were uh stumbling around inside the store. So, we just wanted to check on you, make sure you were okay to drive. Said you're tired. Yeah, I'm not drunk or anything. Like I'm drained. I just moved into my apartment and I've been up cleaning and organizing. >> Gotcha. So you just been up for a long time then? >> Yeah. And I was crying because >> I got paid $600 a month. Four kids. I was really stressed. >> Gotcha. Yeah. They said they saw you go into the um >> the mother and cuz that's where I been. >> What's uh what's the deal with the can here? >> My uh right here. and the thing. So, I fixed it. >> Okay. How about you just set that down there on the truck for me? You got an ID on you? >> Yeah. >> Okay. All right. Is it on you? >> No, it's hard. You can go get it. >> Why are you like stumbling around and stuff? I want to make sure that you're okay cuz they seem like you're >> I have vertigo. >> Okay. >> Okay. So, when I'm really stressed and really drained, it irritates. But I've been up all day since 6:00. >> Okay. Um, well, tell tell me what when these other officers show up, we'll go get your your ID cuz right now cancel. >> Yeah, if you want to sit down, it's fine. >> Yeah. >> Um, you don't got any weapons or anything on you or inside the car, do you? >> When officers asked her about an item she was holding, her explanation didn't quite add up. The story only deepened their suspicions. >> What's the deal with the inhalent? >> The what? >> The inhalent? The spray bottle that you were holding when I walked up? I see I'm fixing my my >> What are you serious? >> Well, cuz you say you're fixing something. There's no >> indicator of spray or nothing. And I seen you holding the spray can and you're stumbling around. >> No, I'm not helling it, but I I actually open the door. >> Okay. Where is your ID at? >> In my purse. >> Do you mind if I go grab that? >> Go get my purse for me right now. >> This is crazy. >> Thank you. this one right here. Mind if I grab it out? >> Yeah. >> But okay, we lived in our car for like a couple weeks cuz I was waiting for to come through for my unit. And so when the truck was open, my my cloth in my car kept on waiting. >> Like the the >> which cloth? >> No, the roof stuff. Well, if I told you that Walmart called us cuz they were concerned about some behavior that you were doing, that's the reason that we're out here. >> I'll go in there and vent four kids and then just cry sometimes cuz sometimes you got to cry. >> Okay. >> I haven't seen a mother before. There's nothing wrong with with letting your emotions out or anything like that, but when when we get information, saying that you're you're stumbling around the store >> because my vertigo I have vertigo. >> Okay. >> Okay. When it when I'm stressed, it acts up. I'm not I don't drink. I haven't drunk in 4 years. I don't have sex. I'm absent. I'm so bad. I go to church. I'm just This whole ordeal is stressing me out. >> Okay. And I have no family here. So, it's just me. >> Okay. >> And I take care of everything. >> Where were you if you were spraying this? Where were you spraying it? Show me. >> Can I get you need help? >> I have bad balance. Okay. >> Show me. >> It's right here. >> Yeah. >> It's open door. Open door. You shut it cuz you was cold. But I want the door open. It's all right here in the head too much. So, >> you care if I touch it? You >> sure can. behind me. >> With the situation growing more alarming, officers decided further steps were necessary before she could leave. They couldn't ignore the risk with her children present. >> Where we're at with this right now is we're just going to give you the opportunity to do a field field sobriety test just to make sure that you're okay to drive obviously cuz you're about to enter the car with your two children. >> I can't walk the straight line. >> Okay. Well, there's we'll walk you through everything that we need you to do. So yeah, >> right now you just kind of go see what they have like >> like every like it's hereditary. My cousin in Lex, Kentucky has it >> and when she like when she first wakes up, she got pills for it. >> But mine's only act up when I'm really stressed. And I'm under a lot of stress. I just moved in yesterday. I'm trying to organize my house. I bought curtains and I bought rods. >> Okay. So, they saw that you had gone into the >> the room, >> right? Did you go in with your children or No, >> no. >> Okay. So, you just left them outside the door then or >> No, they would stand right there. Were they inside the room with you? >> No, I was standing by the door. >> Okay. What were you doing inside the room there? >> I was praying and crying. I swear. >> Okay. >> And then I'll let you Where did my phone? >> Well, your phone's in your first, but just hang out here. We're going to I'm going to run you through some tests just to make sure that you're fine to go drive off with your two kids. Obviously, I don't want them to get hurt. >> So, that's my concern. Um, so I'm going to explain a few things to you. Are you fine if um we close the door and your kids stay here? here and I'll just walk you to the front of this cruiser. Is that okay with you? >> Yeah. >> I can have this officer stay and make sure that >> they can like go up and stay. >> We just don't want them to run out. >> Okay. Just make sure. Okay. >> Sure. All right. We're going to walk over here. >> She mentioned her condition and recounted the events leading up to that moment. But unfortunately, that was not enough. >> Okay. Um do you have anything that's physically wrong with you that I know you said you'd have some sort of issue walking in a straight line. Is that right? >> Um what what's going to cause that issue? Is that the vertigo you were talking about? >> Yeah. >> Like I want to get checked out but I never have time. >> Sure. >> And I'm trying and I enrolled in school today and took longer than what I expected cuz I changed addresses. >> Right. >> And then when I left CCS I immediately came No. I went to Aldi's like all these on South High. >> Yeah. Yeah. And I went to the thrift store to buy some curtains because my new place don't have uh blinds. >> That was all today. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Um so I'm going to give you the opportunity to >> As doubts continued to mount, officers made it clear she wasn't free to go just yet. >> Do you have somebody that can come pick you and your kids up? >> I have the phone. >> But you do have somebody. >> I can try. >> Okay. Why don't you try to I'll get you your phone. Okay. And why don't you try to get a hold of somebody that can come pick up you and your kids? Okay. >> How long were you spraying that stuff in the truck? >> Like I just came out the store so I just opened it. You can remember see >> Well, that's [snorts] not the problem that I have. The problem is if that's what you think it was that you were inhaling too much of it there in the back. >> You think you can say wet ass? >> I mean it does feel wet. So like you probably like it I put my hand on it and it does feel like sticky, >> right? >> I mean it just it kind of depends on if you how much you were I mean that stuff's strong. Like I smelt it like even just rotating the can and I was like that stuff is strong. >> But um I mean were you I mean I'll ask you straight up. Were you purposely inhaling it? >> No. >> To like try to get high or anything or were you just trying to >> or were you just trying to fix it? >> I really was trying to fix it. I'm going to fix it. Like fix it, Randy. Like fix it. >> Philly. >> I get it. I get it. I mean, >> I got to do what I got to do. >> Hi. Um, are you able to come out here >> and um pick up I'm sorry, what's your name again? >> Chvel. >> Pick up Chvel and her two kids. >> Okay. Okay. Um, you Grove City and Walmart. >> Yes. So, it's going to be the Walmart that's on Stringtown Road. >> Um, I live in Galloway. I'm like a couple exes up. Okay. All right. Sounds good. We'll see you then. >> All right. >> All right. Bye-bye. All right. Bye. >> All right. I'll give this back to you. >> Thank you, Dan. >> Do you just want me to set it back in your car? >> Is that okay? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Do you go in the room to kind of look for a break? >> A road? >> The room? Like the mom room to like kind of have a break from everything? >> Okay. >> That's my den place. I go in there and pray and um I have the you virgin verbal app is on my phone. >> Why? >> I listen to my scriptures and and touch home, >> you know. >> Is there a reason you do it at a Walmart? >> No, I'll come to Walmart and shop. >> Yeah. >> No, no. The shopping thing is totally fine. The only thing is like the the loss prevention people said that you were in there for like 15 minutes. So when they see that, it's a little concerning to them as to why somebody might be in that room for an extended period of time and they're in and their and their kids are sitting outside. >> I'm doing 15 minutes. >> Okay. >> My daughter, my little one kicked the door down. >> Okay. >> She's a bully. >> Yeah. >> All right. So, here's where we're at with this. Um, today you are going to get a citation. >> Yes. You're not going to jail tonight. for endangering children. >> The woman was charged with the a child and was issued a court date. When children are involved, poor decisions can have farreaching consequences. Just like the mother at Walmart, these parents found themselves facing serious trouble after authorities discovered dangerous substances in their car. >> Can I at least talk to him before I go in? >> Doing you doing double cuff? On August 18th, 2024, officers stopped a vehicle after it ran multiple stop signs. Inside were a young child, her parents, and an unusual odor that immediately drew attention. >> The Cloud Police Department, you got your driver's license proof insurance on you? >> I do not. >> Okay. I just watched you roll through two signs. Man, >> sorry. Our kid is like screaming in the back right now. >> She all right? >> We just got We had to leave a birthday party over at Taps. We're just trying to eat and then she's freaking out when you know. >> Okay. So, nobody has a driver's license. >> Not on us. >> Oh, not on us. >> Okay. All right. Uh, >> it's fine, baby. >> Yeah. I'm just trying to get her home, man. Like, I I I know I didn't stop all the way, but she's she does this thing where she cried and she just vomited >> everywhere. >> All right, man. Just give me a second. >> How you doing? >> How you doing? Do you have a driver's license? >> Uh, no. Not on me. I I was just telling him I don't have one on me. >> Okay. Do you not have one or do you not have one on you? >> No. Honestly, I'm just going to be forthcoming. Uh, mine is suspended right now. >> So, we're over at Caps trying to have birthday party with her dad and >> she's freaking out. So, I was like, just drive her home. >> Okay, I All right. So, we'll So, call for a second. >> I'm uh I'm just down the street. Sorry, I'm trying to calm her down. >> Okay, that's fine. >> What's your name, my man? >> Jackson. Yeah, I know I shouldn't be driving, man, but >> No, I got you, man. Just give me one second. All right. >> All right. >> Hello. you. >> Hi. >> Hi, little one. What's your name? >> And Boston. >> Beautiful kid. >> Yeah. When she's behaving, >> she sees behaving. >> Yeah. Now that this is all happening, that's the whole reason why we >> I'm not getting nothing back on him. It's like >> While one officer kept the parents engaged in conversation, others discreetly ran a background check. Their prior history quickly became part of the picture. >> I'm sorry. There's like 20 different things that popped up, but none of it's like his exact information. Go ahead and get them out. >> Yeah, we can uh Yeah, we can figure that out later. with this. >> Hey, Miss Jackson, >> can you go ahead and cut that car off for me real quick? >> Yeah. >> All right. Go ahead and step out for me. All right. The reason why I have you step out is because we got a problem call search the vehicle because the car smells like >> Okay. >> You got any weapons on you? >> Nope. >> You put your hands up there real fast. We're going to patch you down. All right. >> You mind grabbing up Rosler and stepping out for us, please? >> So, I can explain to you. Um, so the car does wreak of >> Okay. In the state of Iowa's probable cause for a search of a vehicle and right now, I'm understanding neither one of you have a driver's license. [music] >> So, When was the last time y'all smoked in the car? >> I I probably this morning. >> All right. You want to go back here and sit in front of this car for me? >> Yeah. >> No, I I smoked I smoke a >> Is there any car? >> No. No. You feel free to search? Honestly, I can't smoke in the house obviously cuz I got kids. So, that's that's where I smoke. >> Okay. >> But you're you're good to search. >> All right. >> You're not the driver. Okay. But you understand? >> Yeah. >> What I'm explaining. Is there anything that we need to know about? >> I'm having my mom pick this up. >> Okay. Can you wait with Jack? >> For what? >> Well, you're in the vehicle. Okay. You're not free to leave yet, Court. I I got it. You're good. I got it. You can't go, ma'am. >> For what reason? >> Okay. You're in the vehicle. Okay. The vehicle smells. You are not free to go. >> Okay. >> It's just >> doesn't matter. It's against the law. >> Doesn't count in Iowa. >> The mother eventually handed over a substance she had been carrying. Her admission added weight to the growing concerns. >> So, right now the vehicle is being searched. Okay. If there's in the vehicle, [music] then somebody could potentially be arrested. >> Potentially. Like, is it a for sure thing? I'm sorry. Like, it's >> I got them for you. I got them. Okay. If you'd like to stand in the shade with your daughter and Officer Owen, we'll talk to you a little more in a minute. Okay. But you're not free to go right now. >> Okay. >> Otherwise, if you want, and I know it's not the most comfortable, but I have my air on in the backseat of my car. >> It's okay. My like like I said, my mom's coming to get me. They're just right down the street. >> Well, if you'd like to stay in the shade with Officer Owen for a minute, I'll be right back with it and I'll let you know what's going to happen. Okay. I'm guessing it's in her fanny pack if you haven't found anything else. >> No, not front. No. >> Yeah. Tend to guess there's a box cutter right by the daughter. That's not a good thing. >> I understand. It smells like But what's like do does that automatically mean like it goes to jail? Like >> No. No. They have probable cause to search the car. >> I understand that. But yeah, >> I'm saying like even if there was like just cuz I've seen cops where they see like even like >> but like even right now I'm and I'm not being rude or anything, but like I can smell it on you. >> Like it's just coming off of you. You know what I mean? >> Okay. Can I if I'm Can I be honest? I do have a little bit on me, but I can't go too. >> No. And you know what? Like I was going to say cuz you smell like >> it's it's on me. It's just a little bit and >> Yep. Okay. So, let's do this. Just give it to me. >> Okay. cuz I can smell it. >> Yes, I know. I do have it on me. >> So, so here's the thing. Like, and I I don't know what they're doing. Oh my good god. When you opened it. No, it was like >> And I'm sorry. >> So, here's the thing. Here's the thing. That's child endangerment. You can't do that. >> Well, it's not like we were smoking. >> No, I know. I just keep it away from >> And I do keep it from All right. So, what do you got? Just that. >> Yeah, just those two things. Yes, that you can even take my purse. I pockets. Well, I get I probably will search you more just because um but yeah. Yeah. So, it was really strong. You can smell it now. I don't know what they're going to do. You willingly gave it to me, >> but like just don't have it around her. And even being in the car with it like smell of it. >> Yeah. Obviously, I smelled it cuz you walked up to my side of the car, but the car didn't you weren't smoking. >> But I know. I know. But that's not good for her. >> Even just card. And I understand that like it's seen as taboo or whatever if you're an >> I don't even care about the medical card, but like >> just having it around her. >> Uhhuh. >> You know, it's like >> I I get it to Yeah. I get it to an extent. >> And we don't I don't I don't care what you do at your home and all that stuff, but like >> she's in the car. >> Where's he going? >> Oh, I don't know. He might just be having him sit there. >> All right, sir. I'm just I'm going to have you sit in the back of the car. Doesn't mean you're going to do arrest. Just All right. I got things to do and then I'm going to put the window down cuz I know it's hot. I'll put the AC on to >> just so he doesn't have to stand out in the sun or whatever. That I was trying to see if he wanted to sit in mine just because it was cool. >> A search of the vehicle uncovered more than expected, raising serious questions about safety. The findings made the situation even more alarming. >> Yeah, that's why I'm like we're having a party and she just threw a fit. So, I was going to take her home so she could take go take a nap. >> Yeah. Can you Are you able to take your fanny pack off? I'll just search that. >> Yeah. And >> if you're good here, Sam, then I'm going to go up to the >> Yeah. I Well, I just don't know. >> Do you want me to Grandma's car. Is that grandma's car? >> Yeah, that's my grandma's car. >> When she took this kid out of here, what'd she do? >> Unbuckled it and picked it up. >> Yeah, I know. >> He said there's a couple roaches in the center console. >> Do you have a valid driver's license? >> I don't. >> Okay. Okay. Hey, but you weren't driving, right? >> Yeah. No, but but my husband was that he doesn't have a valid driver's license. >> Oh, okay. >> He was honest about that. We >> Oh, there's grandma's. There's mom. >> Do you have anything in your bra? >> No, I I really don't. And it's one of these thin ones, so sorry. No, it's fine. They they people hide them. It's the only reason I'm checking. >> It's fine. It's lit literally. >> I mean, you told me where the other ones were. So, >> yeah, that I just wanted to be honest because I know you guys could smell >> nothing in your crotch. >> In my what? >> Crotch. >> Ledge. >> Crotch. >> Crotch. Oh, no. I don't have anything. Okay. >> You need something? >> Officers made it clear to the family that the parents actions raised serious concerns for their 2-year-old. The warning highlighted the potential risks the child had been exposed to. >> Uh, the officer stopped him. Let's step over to the sidewalk, please. Okay, miss. We can't be on the street. So, they are not little roaches. >> No, that's old. >> We got a We got a couple things on this. >> And then we have the unsecured child uh seat. >> He ran two stop signs. So, pulled him over. Smell just emulating from the car with all the windows down and the air on. So, that's probably cause search in Iowa. And there's a large box cutter with which reach of Rosalyn. I realize that, but it is a dangerous weapon for a three-year-old, right? We're not charging them for on that, but they could be charged for not properly securing the the little one. Yeah. >> Um so right now we're just waiting a minute for the officer to decide what they're going to do. Um and then tickets or whatnot will be decided in a minute. >> Will I go to jail? >> I don't know what they're doing with it. He's It was the other officer stopped and I just came because I thought that the other officer was I didn't know there was another officer already here. But then when I saw a female, females males don't usually search females. So, I was like, "Well, there's a female. I'll hang out." And I like kids. So, >> since the substances could belong to either parent, officers needed to determine who was responsible. Every answer could change the course of the investigation. >> I was like, I'll hang out >> right now. Two stop signs under child, two child endangerments, and possession for both. We'll see who admits to ownership. >> All right, man. I'm going to read something to you real quick, Mr. Jackson. All right. All right. You got the right to remain silent and having these rights in mind, do you want to talk to >> All right, man. Who's I had my medical card expired about what a month ago. >> Okay. >> So then, you know, I just got a little bit of flour since I can't get the cards for this. >> Just uh So, what exactly as far as the goes? What was it in there? >> But so it was literally just like two little roaches just like I don't know if it was you. I explained it earlier. I smoked in that car because I can't smoke in the house. >> Yeah. >> So there they were just two little roaches. I left there. I like to save them for smoking, you know? So they were just in there. >> Yeah. >> Like if you smell the middle glove box, that's why it rings because they're just sitting in there. All >> right, man. I'm be honest with you, dude. They're like not roaches. They're like half blunts. >> Yeah. Well, >> they're like half blunts, man. >> You know, a roach is like a half already something that was sparked, you know. >> Yeah, I got you, man. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> So, admit it to his. Not hers. >> No. >> Okay. All right. So, we're we're having trouble finding either of you in our system. So, you guys both have driver's license from Iowa? >> Uh, so I don't have a driver's license, but you need my so. >> The mother openly admitted to everything and showed visible emotion when confronted with the consequences. Her reaction reflected the gravity of the situation. >> All right, I'm just going to read something to you real quick. >> Oh, no. Is it what? Like my rights or something? >> Yeah. >> Oh, so I'm getting arrested? >> No. >> Oh, okay. >> I have to read them, though. >> Oh, okay. Sorry. >> I'm not trying to get in trouble over you. You know what I mean? >> Yeah. >> All right. Do you understand each of these rights? Have I explained them to you? And having these rights in mind, do you wish to talk speak to me now? >> I sure. >> Okay. Whose is it? >> What? It's mine. It's mine. Yeah. I I mean, he he had his medical card, but I smoked freely. He had his own cards and stuff like that. >> So, the that was located in the vehicle is yours. >> Yeah, it was located on me. I gave it to him. >> Okay. So, that's >> Yeah. I mean, like for husband and wife, obviously, he smokes, [music] too, but it wasn't his. It was mine. When did when did he smoke in that car? >> I'd say like this was way earlier this morning. We had dropped her off around 10:00 a.m. to her grandma's. I think it was around like 10:00 a.m. and we were gone for an hour. I was just trying to clean up. We just got back from a camping trip. I just trying to >> Did you guys both smoke in there or is it just him? >> It was both of us. >> Both of you smoking there around 10 this morning. >> Yeah, this Yeah, it was h Yeah, maybe a little early. We woke up at 7:00 this morning. So, it might have been like We ate breakfast, we were home for like a couple hours and then we dropped her off for a little bit. I think we got back around 10:30. So, it might have been like around 9:30. >> Where did you get that from? >> Uh, it was on her person. >> Okay. Well, she's saying it's his and he's saying it's his. Okay. >> So, they're both saying it's theirs and it's not doesn't belong to the other person. >> We're going to charge both of them. We're not playing those games. >> I just don't understand why they're trying to incriminate one of us right now. Like, I don't understand. Like, I understand. got you. >> I understand that. Like it seems like child endangerment, but it wasn't. Like I understand, but I didn't know that. We thought it was buckled in. I >> I buckle I strapped her in. That's why like you saw her that her butt or whatever. >> She was buckled into the chair. >> Yes. And I didn't realize that the chair wasn't buckled. I didn't realize that. >> I I'm only telling you what I observed. >> I know. But I buckled her in. You saw that? >> I saw that. >> Mom, would you come be with Rosie? >> Go to grandma. >> Come to grandma. S I'm just going to get some quick info from you. Mainly pertains to her. Okay. Since she was in the vehicle. How old is she? Two. >> I'm just You You were the one that pulled in, right? Originally, or Yeah, you saw her buckled in. I didn't know that the thing wasn't buckled in. >> So, I'm just I'm I'm going to be completely honest with you. As I'm going through the vehicle, >> I can tip that thing over with my finger. It's not It's not locked in. >> I didn't I did not know that. I When I went in there, I put her in. It wasn't like it it wiggled or anything and I buck but buttoned her in. I was kind of in a rush to get home. >> I understand that. But if you guys were getting into a crash from running these stop signs like you did. >> Yes, I understand that car. It's usually buckled in. I The trunk thing must I just I don't know. I assume that it was buckled in. It's usually buckled in. >> Officers went over the legal process with her before both parents were taken into custody. They were transported to jail while the investigation continued. >> Thank you. If you guys go smell the cart. It won't smell like >> Do you have anything in your broth? >> No, I No, I don't have anything. I have no money. >> Nothing. >> Is anything you take in the jail? >> Yeah. No, I know. I I know. I've been to >> It's a separate charge. >> I know. I've been to jail before, unfortunately. But no, there's nothing in here. But do you know if they post bond for Cuz I've just never been in trouble like this before. Do you guys know? >> I don't know. But we'll try to find out for you. Okay. I understand you don't want to help me. It's bond. I'm trying to help you. I brought you over here on the other side. >> If I didn't want to help you, you'd be over there in front of your daughter. >> Okay. >> Do you understand what I'm saying? Are you serious? >> Does anybody have a separate cuffs? I mean, >> can I at least talk to him before I go in? >> Doing you doing double cuffs? >> Mom, will you text? It's on my phone. Alex D. I won't be able to come work in the morning. Just say I'm sick right now, please. >> Where do you work? I own my own cleaning company. I >> All right. So, this is what we're going to do. We're going to walk right back around here and I'm going to sit you inside the car, but I'm going to do it without your daughter seeing you in handcuffs. Okay. We can go this way. >> You want to go that way? >> Yeah, we can go this way. >> I'm going to explain something to you real quick. >> Yeah. >> I'm going to put you in handcuffs. All right. >> No. Okay. >> Hey, I'm I'm not going to try to make this first. >> All right. >> All right, man. Both going for the possession. Okay. >> All right. >> Got that out of the way. >> Nope. >> The car seat, dude. It was not hooked up. It's literally flowing around the car. If you guys have got into a crash or run one of these stop sign or anything like that, kids gonna go banging around the back seat. Okay. >> Not a good deal. All right. And plus the traffic violations of running stop signs. All right. >> She's all buckled in. Okay. And she's good. >> You honestly I would never like purposely put my kid in harm. >> But the fact that they want to say that I can't see her. >> Listen listen. Okay. It's okay. Okay. Just take some breaths. And like Officer Reia said, when you're talking to the judge, just be honest. Be yourself. You know, do >> judges where they don't care about like they don't not not care. But I'm just saying there are some that like that one of the officers that I talked to just made it seem like it was like I understand it's wrong, but like it was like there's something. >> Yeah. Just just talk with your lawyer or not the lawyer, but talk to the judge and just tell them exactly like exactly like what you told me. you know, this is what it's from. This is what we were doing. I didn't do anything in the car with her. You know, let them know you gave it to me willingly. Just just try to keep your composure, but also like, you know, let them know that how you're feeling. >> Okay. >> You guys are so bothered. My daughter goes to kindergarten. It's her first day in a few days. >> Well, she's all taken care of now. Oh, the other one. Your other one. Okay. Listen, Grandma. Grandma's going to take care of >> I know. It just >> and as soon as you get things figured out, you'll I'm guessing see the judge in the morning or maybe you'll be able to make bond tonight. I don't know. Just take it one one step at a time. Okay? So, some deep breaths. Just try to relax. I know that's difficult, but try to relax. Okay? And she's buckled and she's taken care of. You know, your other daughter's taken care of, right? So, just the two girls though. Okay. So, I'm Grandma was more than willing to take them. So, >> do you want this scarf? >> Yeah. >> Say, did they bring anything else? Did I think they left your shirt with your your like >> Yeah, it was my >> Okay, walk over here to this metal gate. Have you been to jail before, miss? >> Unfortunately, I have. >> Poke County. >> Yeah. Yeah. Had a bad past. >> Doesn't mean you have to have the same future. >> All right, my man. You ready? >> Yeah. >> I'm going to grab your jacket from you. Okay. >> Don't mind me sweat off. All right, dude. Just one one other thing, though. >> If you do have anything else on you, like any or anything like that, >> I ain't got nothing. >> All right. >> The woman was charged with child endangerment and possession of a controlled substance. And the man was charged with a suspended license, childment, traffic offenses, and a dependent. What began as a routine traffic stop quickly turned serious when the woman refused to cooperate. >> Okay? So, you're going to sit in the chair. You're going to listen. Okay? Stop. On April 6th, 2025, police stopped a woman after she ran a stop sign. She initially complied when asked for her license, keeping the encounter calm. >> Good. >> How are you? >> Good.
