Officers asked her to step out of the car for further investigation. After coming out, she explained the incident. So, >> what's going on tonight? Um, I kind of had anger with my husband. Okay. >> Nothing serious. I'm just kind of hiding out around the corner. >> Okay, I got you. >> All right. Um, just do me a favor. Can you step out of the car for me? All right, you're fine. Just take a step for me. Right over there. Got your feet injured? Anything like that? >> Um, a little bit, but nothing serious. Yeah. >> Okay. All right. Just hang tight right there for me. >> Yeah. I told him do not call And what would be that reason? >> He was concerned about me and I'm fine. >> Okay. And how do you spell your last name? Keith, your vehicle in your vehicle? >> Uh, yeah. They're my purse. >> Okay. All right. I got you. You got You said that you got into an argument with him. >> Yeah. >> What was argument over? >> Really? Nothing. >> Nothing. Just any anyone get physical between you guys at all? >> Not at all? No. >> Not at all? No. Okay. What made you drive over here? Um, he was concerned about me, so I just >> Is that what the argument was over? >> Yeah. >> Okay. All right. I got you. So, you do you need EMS or anything like that? >> No. >> The woman repeated that her husband had overreacted. While talking with officers, she shared personal details. >> Any bleeding? I see you kind of got yourself in that toe right there. >> Just a little bit. Just >> So, it looks like you got on the big toes. >> Like blisters. >> Blisters. Yeah, that's what that looks like. >> Yeah. And I was like, he overreacted. He >> overreacted. >> I tried to tell him, "Do not call. Do not call." >> Mhm. >> I said, "I will go to urgent care, blah blah blah." Nothing's a big issue. >> Okay. All right. I got you. >> Thank you. What's your name? >> I'm Deputy Overway. Just hang out here for me. I got another deputy coming. I got to talk to him. How long you been staying over there for? Do you live over there? >> Yes, sir. >> You do? >> One two years. >> Two years. >> One. Yeah. >> Okay. >> We just had an incident. I said, "Please." There was no need to call 911. >> Yeah. >> You know, and I said, "I'll go to the urgent care." >> And I said, "Please, just do not call. I'm not going to be here." So, I just tried to deescalate the situation. >> Okay. All right. I got you. Yeah. I was just making sure that nothing kind of got physical between you guys or anything like that or No. >> You guys um were you guys home all night or did you guys end up going out or? >> Yeah, we were out. We were on our way home. >> Okay. Where'd you guys end up going out to? >> We went to a comedy show with the Pani. A come? Where's that at? >> Port Charlotte. >> Port Charlotte. Yeah. Oh, okay. I I've heard people going to a comedy show around here. I had no idea where it is. I >> We had a great time, actually. Everything was fine. >> Where are you originally from? >> Boston. >> Boston. Okay. I thought I heard an accent. I just wasn't too sure. >> Where are you from? >> Uh Michigan. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. I don't think a lot of people are from Florida. I haven't come in contact with a lot of people that are actually from Florida. So, >> you look so young, too. >> Uh yeah, I feel old. You guys married? >> We are. Yeah. Okay, cool. When did you guys get married? >> Only like when we moved down here, we decided it was like the to-do. So 20 21. So >> Okay, I hear you. You guys have any kids? >> No. He He has two grown sons and two grandchildren now going to walk and see and and >> they also have Boston. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. Okay. >> Yeah. >> All right. Do you follow any sports of Boston? >> He does. He does. Um, I think the Red Sox are doing pretty good right now. Surprise. And then we were talking. >> No. Yeah. I say we h uh we have to, you know, it's it's my job. It's the same as, you know, anyone else doing their job. I say, "Do you work at all or anything like that?" >> Um, actually retired. I work union. >> When asked about her foot injury, she avoided being specific because she appeared under the influence. Deputies began standard field sobriety tasks and she agreed. >> All right. I'm just >> He overreacted. That's all. >> Okay, that's fine. I mean, people overreact. It happens from time to time or something. >> Concerned and especially being on a fight in a hot minute or >> Yeah. No. I mean, I would do the same thing if that happened to my spouse. So, it's it's understandable. >> And I was like, please don't do it. Don't do it. And I just thought if I left, it wouldn't be an issue. >> Okay. >> You know, like just call the mom. >> Yeah. I got you. Well, when something like that happens, we have to come and just make sure that everyone is okay on both sides. Um, like I did stop and I did talk to him for a little while to try to gather kind of what's happening. He just said she's embarrassed. She ran over her feet. It was an accident. I just want to make sure she's okay. He kind of I was trying to put pieces together to the puzzle. He wasn't wanting to give me the pieces put the puzzle together. >> Yeah, if that makes sense. >> So, no, I hear you. People make mistakes every day. So, >> it happens. You don't mind me asking just a general question. I'm pretty sure it's the same answer that I'm going to have. Why did you end up moving to Florida? >> Uh, we both basically retired. Okay. We got out of the city. >> Okay. >> You know, enough was enough. >> Yeah, I got you. I figured it was going to be like the cold or something. I don't like the cold anymore. So, >> Well, that's true. Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Me, you, and Dave were talking. Um, so whenever I pulled up, car's off the road. Uh, vehicle was completely off. She was in sitting there. It's a push button car. She never pocket in her purse. I just been standing here kind of conversing with her until you kind of got here. I was going to see kind of where the person was in the car, but talking with her, she does seem under the influence. >> Yeah. >> So, >> the car was off. >> Car was off. Yeah, car was off. Just exactly how it was right now. So, that's >> Is she injured? >> Uh, she has slight injuries to her feet. I asked her double asked her if she wanted EMS or anything like that. She's like, "No, it's not a big deal." She didn't want to tell me what happened. Um, her boyfriend or sorry, her husband told me what happened. Um, I guess, uh, she had accidentally ran her feet over. She's got, like I said, some mark on her feet. You can see on her big toe. Uh, there's a, uh, there's a laceration under her toe and then in between, uh, her big toe and the toe next to it. Um, it doesn't appear life-threatening. Um, the only thing that I'm thinking is because the car was off. >> Huh? >> What did you say? >> I didn't call him. I called you. >> Okay. >> So, >> you're talking to >> He's He's purple. So, I Yeah, like I said, I just been out here conversing with her until you got here. So, so right now I was going to ask you um are you willing uh to perform standardized field sobriety tasks to make sure that you are safe to operate a motor vehicle? Yeah. Okay. All right. So, the first one that I'm going to do, and I'm just going to double check you don't have any physical handicaps that are going to impair you from walking, standing on one leg, or any eyes or anything like that? >> Glass is now a little weak for me, but fun. >> Okay. All right. All right, I'll take that into account. All right, hold that for me. >> She performed the eye test, walk and turn, and one leg stand exercises under officer supervision. She struggled with counting during the tests. >> All right, so the first task I'm going to have you do is just eyes. What I'm going to have you do is I'm going to have you take your arms and place them at your sides for me, just like so. All right, I'm going have you feet just together like this. If you can put them together. All right, just like that. All right, I'm going to shine my light and what you're going to do is you're going to follow. Can you see the tip of my pen? Yeah. I'll make it a little bit bigger. Can you see the tip of my pen? My fingers on it. All right. Are you able to reach out and just touch that with your pointer finger? Okay. All right. Perfect. So, what you're going to do is you're going to follow the tip of my pen with your eyes and your eyes only. Do you understand? Okay. We're not going to move our head back and forth. We're just going to use our eyes. All right. [Music] All right, you can relax. This is going to be the same thing, but it's going to go up. Okay. Okay. You have any questions? >> Okay. Just just get in that position for me. Hands down. >> Okay. >> You're fine. >> All right. You able to see the tip of the pen? >> Yeah. >> There. Turn out the blind. You see it? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Yeah. It's kind of hard to see. >> I understand. All right. Do me a favor and we're not going to move our head. >> All right. You go ahead and relax for me. All right. All right. So, this next task, guys. All right. So, this next task we're going to do is going to be called the walk and turn. Okay. Are you comfortable in the shoes that you're wearing or would you rather do it barefoot? >> No, that's you're comfortable in the shoes that you're wearing. >> Okay. What we're going to have you do because there's no vehicles right now. I'm going to have you take a couple of steps towards me. Okay. So, what we're going to do is I'm going to demonstrate everything and then I'm going to instruct you to do so. Do you understand? Okay. So, I'll demonstrate. Hey, if you have any questions, please feel free to interrupt me at any time. Okay. So, this task is called the walking turn. All right. So, what I'm going to have you do is I'm going to demonstrate. Hold this. All right. So, I'm going to have you get in the starting position while I explain the task. Okay. So, I'm going to have you line up right here for me. Take a couple steps right there. All right. Now, turn. Face me. Yep. Nope. Face me. Yep. Okay. So, like I said, I'm going to demonstrate it. Okay. And then I'll instruct you to do it. Do you have any questions so far? All right. B. So, what we're going to do is we're going to have an imaginary line right here. All right. And like I said, I'm going to demonstrate. You're going to take your left foot, place it in front of your right, like so. Keep your arms down at your side like this. All right. Are you able to get in the starting position for me? All right. You go ahead and get in that starting position while I Okay. So, what we're going to do is we're going to take nine heel to toe steps. All right. And if you take a step off, you just put it back on and continue the nine. Okay? Do you have any questions so far? No. >> Okay. Just start whenever I instruct you to. Okay? And when we get to the end of the nine steps, we're going to make a series of small steps, taking nine heel to toe steps back. >> A little much, guys. >> All right, trust me, I understand. Do you have any questions? Yeah, I'm going to demonstrate. Do you have any questions? >> No. >> Okay, I'm going to do three steps, okay? And do the series of small steps. You're going to take nine. Do you have any questions? It should look like this. One, two, three. And a series of small steps like so. Placing your foot back on the line going back. One, two, three, until nine. All right. And we're not going to raise our hands. Can you get back in that starting position for me? >> All right. And we're not going to raise our hands for balance. We're going to count out loud while looking at our feet. Okay. >> Deputies instructed her through the final finger to nose test where she attempted to follow commands, but showed inconsistent results. >> Feet together like so. Arms down at your side. Okay. >> All right. So, what we're going to do is we're going to raise either foot. What foot are you going to choose to raise? But go ahead. >> Okay. Just let me know. Get in the starting position for me. Just right in front of me. >> All right. Well, I'm just doing this cuz my hair is so uncomfortable. >> You're You're fine. We're not We're not concerned about your hair right now. Okay. All right. So, in this task, what we're going to do is we're going to take whichever foot and we're going to raise it up approximately 6 in, which is about the size of a soda can. Okay? And it should be approximately 30 seconds. It's going to look like this. All right? We're going to count out loud just like so. It's going to be while staring at the tip of our toe. All right? We're just going to count out loud. 1001 1002 1003 1004 and so on. Okay? And if you drop it like this, all you do is just pick it right back up and continue from where you left off. All right? And you're going to keep your foot parallel to the road. Do you have any questions? Okay. Just hang tight for me and I'll instruct you whenever to start. Oh, you have it. Okay. Which foot are you going to raise? Okay. >> All right. You may begin. >> 1,001 1,002 that needs 1,003 100,00 keep going. >> 1007 1008 1,009 10 How many do I have to go? >> Until I instruct you to stop. >> Oh, you're fine. You keep going. >> 1,00 7 1 8 1009 1 >> All right. You put your foot down. Nope. [Music] Okay. All right. The next task we're going to do is called finger to nose. Okay. What you're going to do is you're going to get in that the same starting position. Okay. When you guys want to hold that. All right. So, feet together, arms at your side. All right. And this time, we're going to make pointer fingers like this. All right. We're going to bring them right to our side like so. All right. And when I instruct you to do so, I'm going to instruct you left or right. And what you're going to do is raise that hand. And you're going to touch the very tip of your nose. Say like this. Does that help? >> Is it Is it your hair that's bothering you? Okay. Does I see your Okay. >> Thank you. >> All right. Yep. Point the fingers down at your side feet like so. >> All right. All right. So, during this exercise, you're going to tilt your head back. All right. I'll I'll instruct you when to start. Okay. Just watch me. And if you have any questions, please feel free to interrupt me. All right. So, you're going to tilt your head back like so. At about a 45°ree angle. You're not going to try to break your neck and look straight up. Okay. Just slightly tilt tilted back. All right. And what we're going to do is you're going to close your eyes. I'm not going to close mine for safety. All right? But you will close yours during this exercise. Do you have any questions so far? >> No. Okay. Keep your eyes on me. All right. So, get your hands down on your side. Point your fingers like so. All right. And we're going to bring whichever hand I instruct you to going to bring it up. Touch the very tip of your nose. Okay? And it should be this part of your finger, just the end of the nail bed. Okay? It's not going to be the pad, the side, this side. It's just going to be the very tip. Okay? And you're going to come up and I'm not going to >> based on her performance. Officers placed her in handcuffs. Officers secured her belongings before transport. >> All right, then. I'll >> All right. Do me a favor. You put your hands behind your back. Are you kidding me? >> Put them together like you're praying for me. >> All right. Would it be more comfortable if I put you in two sets of handcuffs? >> This is fine. Okay. You got to move your hand in a little bit more. Your right one. There you go. Okay. Lift them up. Are they too tight? Good. Okay. Can you point your shin light for me? All right. Do you have anything on you? Anything on you that's going to prick, poker, stab, or anything like that? Okay. Do you have anything in the vehicle that you want to go with you? A purse or a phone? >> Phone. Okay. All right. Do you have anything in your pockets at all? All right. We're going to walk to the first car. All right. You don't have anything in your pockets at all? Okay. >> Breast spray, I guess. >> Breast spray. Okay. Here. I'll take that for me. Sure. The woman was charged with DUI and booked into the Charlotte County Jail. On August 3rd, 2025, police in Smithfield, Utah, responded to the home of city council member Ted Stokes after reports that his son had been involved in a traffic accident. As officers explained why two patrol units had responded, Stokes immediately objected. At that time, officers noted the condition of the other car. >> I want to know why there's two officers responding to such a simple thing. >> Cuz they're we pay a lot of money for you guys in this city, and I decide whether the budget's good or not. And so I think you should go patrol Main Street. Do your job and I'll talk to him and I'll deal with this. >> Okay. >> Go patrol. >> Talk to him. >> Look guys, we pay so much money for this. >> Look. And I gave him my insurance and I gave him everything and he and I we already called and made an insurance report. State Farm's handle. >> Instead of cooperating, Stokes criticized the officers. When asked, he deflected by questioning the officer's authority and investigative methods. >> Accident. the person who's not step up on me. >> No, I'm telling I'm asking. >> No, no, no, no, no. I'm telling you how you're supposed to do your job because you obviously don't know. Can I get your son's name? >> You can step onto my property and I will talk to you if you will be reasonable. Let's start the conversation over. Let's do it. >> Please. >> Okay. >> Hi, my name is Ted Stokes. >> I am here because there was a complaint about your vehicle or your son hitting another vehicle and the vehicle looks like it's totaled. >> Growing increasingly agitated, Stokes called another city official by phone, vowing to defund the department. tax dollars. I think he called to make a report just to make it fine. Two officers show up at my house, walk up to my friend >> 24718. >> Don't tell me anything other than we're here to do an investigation and the other officer is still sitting here as backup. I promise you, I will do everything in my power as a city council member to make sure these guys are. There will be five police officers in this town because this is unbelievable that I have a this guy needs a backup officer to make sure I don't hurt him at my house for for for my son hitting a a car non-moving. I waited a half an hour at the guy's house to give him his his insurance policy. I'm fine with him making a police report. I'm blown away by the fact that right in the middle of my Sunday dinner, my daughter's birthday party, there's five other or five other cars here for guests. I've got 40 people at my house for a birthday party. I've got two I've got two officers at my house and this guy's >> Can I talk to you? Who's the other officer? >> Mcome. >> Mcome. >> I've got Hansen and Mcome. This is unbelievable. Like get on Main Street the other officer and make go patrol. Instead, they're making sure city councilman Stokes doesn't do something. Like I don't know if this is retaliatory or what because I didn't vote. Like it better not be. I'm telling you, Justin. Like this is this is over. Like this is the last straw. I' I've got two two officers out in front of my house with four people in my house celebrating a birthday party and he couldn't even tell me why he was here other than he was to investigate a car accident that he acted like we had done a hit and run for like that. That's how he approached me. He didn't say, "Hey, Ted, guess what? Like some guy wants to make a report. We're here to do it. We understand you gave him your insurance information. Thanks for doing that, but we're obligated to make a I'm fine with that. You should have seen this guy post. I I'll send you the >> Stokes continued venting, recounting past complaints. He accused officers and said irrelevant things. >> But but that's this is the last straw. I know I have to express my complaints, but this is it. This is the last straw. They're both here cuz he's afraid I'm going to jump him. I I I I approached him to talk to me. He says, "You you need to back up off of me. Back up off of me. I'm standing here talking to you with a Sharpie in my hand. You think I'm going to hurt you? These guys are so untrained, Justin. It blows my mind. I am done. Like I don't know if there's a way to amend amend the budget now, but I want to amend it and I'm going to talk I'm going to call the other council members tonight. I'm going to tell them exactly what happened and we are amending it. Like we are going to five officers. This is it. We need two officers on duty in the morning. We need two officers on duty in the afternoon. We need one officer on duty at night. This is the most unbelievable thing I have ever seen. Tell me when you can talk in the morning. I'll go enjoy your Sabbath. I need to talk to you first thing in the morning. This is This is unbelievable. All right. Well, let's talk about it in the morning. I I'm sorry, Justin. Like I know like Justin, this is culminating like the I've got other stories I could tell you. Last week, an an officer an officer pulled someone over or in front of ju just just just in front of the in the the intersection of of Spring Creek Fitness or what's it called? Summit Creek Fitness. The guy pulled over like right past the intersection. The guy was an idiot, right? He pulled over like 5t past the intersection. So, our officer parked right in the middle of the intersection and no one could make a left-hand turn or a righthand turn or go straight through a Main Street intersection for like 30 minutes while this guy did his stop. What would you have done, Justin, if you were the officer in that situation? Tell me what you would have done. You would have you would you would have got out of the car. You would have gone up and said, "Hey, can you pull 20 ft forward so I can pull in behind you?" But no, no, no. We parked the officer parked smack dab in the middle of the intersection and sat there and did his 20-minut stop. And I have pictures of it. I have pictures. I have videos. Like, Justin, we cannot fund this because it's not worth our money. These guys have no idea what they're doing. Oh, I'll take a picture. You can see both their trucks pulled up right here to handle this issue. I am I am done. Like, this is the last straw. It is the last straw. I am done with these guys. I I I'm embarrassed. I'm flat out embarrassed. I get a ticket 3 weeks ago for rolling through a stop sign at 7:00 a.m. and and the officer says, "Sorry, I had to do it." Turns out I find out him and him and him and him and the chief are giving each other high fives the next Monday. Like Justin, I've got three off. >> Finally, Stokes described the accident. He assured officers about his son's medical issue. >> No, he he I think he heard his he was bleeding his nose pretty bad. We handled it, but like you know, we're competent parents. If he needed medical attention, we would take care. >> But you think he might have broke it? >> I don't know. We're going to go check it out tomorrow and see. Like we would we would we would handle that, right? Tell me why you think I couldn't handle my son's medical attention. I >> think you can. >> Don't. Isn't that my Isn't that my It's not a right. It's my legal obligation. >> But it's your right to be able to >> It's my right and my legal obligation. So So yeah. >> Okay. >> Uh can I talk to him? >> What What do you need to talk to him for? >> Just to find out what >> I can tell you happened. He had city youth he had he had stake youth council. He's on a youth council for the church. Okay. >> He pulled out of the stake center. They gave them muffins. >> Uh chocolate muffins. You can see them on the front seat. They spilled. He set the muffin on the seat and he was going to eat it when he got home cuz he's fasting and we were going to eat dinner at 5. And he set it down and the muffin fell down onto the carpet. You can see where the the frosting like got on the carpet. He bent down to pick it up, which he shouldn't have done and he set it back up on the seat. When he looked up, he kind of veered off and hit this guy. >> Yeah. I have a sister that years and years ago >> did the almost the exact same thing. >> Bend over, grabbed the steering wheel, went across the road. Luckily, he went this way instead of in oncoming traffic. >> Grateful that no one was in the car. He's okay. He has a bloody nose. We'll look at it tomorrow and make sure it's not broken. >> Okay. Do you know if he was wearing his seat belt? >> He was. >> Do you know how fast he was going? >> I don't think I asked him. He said, "Dad, I pulled out of the the the thing and I had let off the gas cuz I'm going downhill anyways." When he turns left, >> the officer issued the standard accident exchange form with insurance details. Stokes admitted fault on his son's behalf >> so that you can contact your insurance company. >> I already did contact before I gave him our insurance. I hope he did, too. >> I don't have a problem with you making a report. It's two officers and it's the approach. >> Blows my mind, man. >> Okay. I >> can we just >> I don't feel like I >> Yeah. No, you need to you need to you need to you need to handle that better. You need to say, "Hey, I heard your son was in an accident. Someone asked me to come make a report." And I would say, "Oh, was it the guy who got hit?" Instead, you come up to me like you're doing an FBI and get not getting into that cuz I tried to be friendly. >> I tried to be friendly the entire time. >> No. >> Tried to be friendly with you the entire time. I tried to strike up a conversation. >> Why are there two officers here? >> Justin's blown away. >> There is a vehicle that >> No, no, no. Say and that's what you said, too. I >> You said, "Hey, there's a vehicle that's been to that's been totaled on a on a roadside." As if we hit and run it. That's how you approached me. I until I get here, I don't know the full circumstance. >> I don't >> The person who called didn't say anything. >> I'm going to start working on paperwork so I don't waste more time. >> Let's finish off your hands. Let's finish this conversation. >> Hey, let's finish this conversation that you're up. Did you know you Hey, >> you said Listen, you said I didn't know the whole situation. What what report did you receive? >> What do you mean? >> What were the words that the dispatch person told you? >> It's all on written records. >> So, no. No, you tell me. >> It's all I'm going to do. >> Why won't you just tell me? >> This is what I hate about you guys. The lack of transparency. >> Okay. >> Lack of transparency. All the bull crap. Like, it's done. Like, I'm sorry. You guys dug your own grave. >> Okay. >> It's unbelievable. >> Hey, Justin wants that other officer on Main Street. >> Okay. >> Go send him. Okay. [Music] >> Okay. You got a second? >> You're good. Coming up. I'm I'm okay, man. Thank you, though. Uh, so this is the accident exchange form. It has your the case number. It also has both of your insurance information that's on there. Some of it looks like I haven't put it in, but it's redacted. >> I understand. >> So, that >> I don't need his. Yeah. >> Yeah. Okay. >> So, what you'll need to do, like you've It sounds like you've already done it. Contact your insurance company. That's what they'd be looking for. >> Cool. Do you have any questions? >> No. >> Okay. Uh, do you want to fill out a witness statement or anything? Or does your son >> No, we're good. It's his fault. Okay. We didn't That's why we waited for 30 minutes for him to get home. Gave it to him. That's why we took care of it. I I expected someone might show up just to make a police report cuz sometimes the insurancees want that. >> After the incident, Councilman Ted Stokes faced heavy criticism from the mayor and other council members who called his remarks unprofessional. Stokes later issued a public apology, admitting he had violated ethics standards and saying sorry to both the officers and his colleagues. Imagine the fraudster caught between silence and betrayal, wondering if turning on his partner will save him or seal his fate. >> All right, cool. Pat you down to make sure. >> You say save. >> On September 1st, 2023, police responded to a bank after staff reported a suspicious check. Officers approached the man, later identified as Mr. Anthony. They confirmed he wasn't carrying any illegal things and explained why they needed to check. Yes. No weapons, right? Cool. If I dispatch and make sure you don't got any guns on you or nothing at all. >> All right. You pull down. I just pat you down and make sure you stay safe. >> Oh, please. That's what we do to somebody left. >> During the conversation, he defended himself. However, Anthony had no email or paperwork to prove. >> That's the check. I got to get >> um Can I read I need to read you some question before I can ask you about the check. You cool with that? >> I need to read something to you before I can ask you about the check. Is that cool with you? [Music] emergency. Yes or no out loud? >> Um, you want to talk about the check and everything? here. >> You taking me to jail? >> I just want to ask you questions about it. >> I didn't say we were taking you to jail. You're not in handcuffs, right? >> Nobody said you're going to jail, man. >> We just want to ask you about what's going on with that check. You got to tell us technically right now you're detained. I told you to sit down. So, I can't ask you any question about the check until I read you that stuff. >> Okay. Doesn't mean you're going to jail. Okay. >> All right. >> I did some work for a guy. I do I do side work. So I I do like anyway school. And >> as officers pressed further, Anthony revealed a troubling detail. By hearing Anony's story, officers realized he was being used as a pawn in a larger fraud scheme. the work for the the school. >> Remember? >> Yeah. >> I'm homeless. >> Huh? >> On the streets. >> Mhm. >> A guy came to me. >> You got what? >> A guy came to me after I wanted to see myself. >> Okay. >> I said yes. So then I guess when he was >> Okay. Where did you meet this guy? Like where were you when this happened? >> I was laying on the ground. >> Uh but what about what? Well, my mom said >> okay. Um what the guy look like? >> Nice car, you know. >> How long was that? He dropped me off. >> He dropped me off. >> Here he dropped me off like he left and then I guess I guess it would have happened. I went called him and >> he came back and got me. I guess I don't I don't know how I don't know. I need and I need it was the opportunity probably a stupid stupid opportunity. >> So I'm going be honest. >> Well, I appreciate your honesty >> that No, I appreciate that. That's very big of you to let us know the truth. But when did you met the guy today? >> Dark skin Mike with dreads. >> And uh what kind of car? >> I've seen this before. >> Yeah. like dropped off on a van. He had a he dropped off like one day. >> What kind of car was it again? >> It was a white Mercedes >> SUV or a uh SUV >> four. >> Around what time did he drop you off? >> Did he pull up in the parking lot or did he dropped me off like down the road and he told me that bank right there going that bank and I walked in. >> How much money did he offer you cash check? >> He told me um $100,000. >> Did he give it to you or anything? >> He said you get it if you cash it. >> How are you supposed to give him the money? >> I got to call him phone number for him. [Music] They explained the reality after showing Anony's messages. They also explained to him why he got charged. >> But what's the text saying? >> You need to help yourself, my dear. >> This is right now. Old boy just set you up, >> right? He say he call >> him five minutes [Music] all that verify they telling them we got to go way too long [Music] Okay. >> That it doesn't does it scroll up for more conversation between you and him. I mean, I see that conversation, but like where's the conversation begin? >> The >> Well, that obviously starts somewhere, right? The all that. >> Why is it from that same number? Yeah. >> Okay. >> See, that's something else. >> But that's from the same number. >> He don't punch. No, that's a dude that um that's a dude, another dude that he tried to hook up that I tried to name that morning that morning. Say he still talking about the chest. You going to punch this in his face talking about >> we're just we like look we already know. We know that it's not a good check. We know that you're here to cash that check. We're trying to help you because if some guy >> is honest about No, I know. I I honest because I've seen this happen before. People go around, they get people that are hard up >> from money. >> If they're successful, sometimes they are, sometimes they're not. >> Then they get their cut, >> right? >> You know, you got to understand that >> a $9,000 check, it's a big that's a big amount of money. You know what I mean? like seems too good to be true. So if this person is clearly doing that, we would rather have that person versus you. >> You know, you're small man on that. >> Yeah. He's using a scapegoat. >> But we have to be able to prove even, you know what I mean? Like that you're not lying to us and that you truly are. That's why she's asking certain questions like if you got dropped off in front that would prove what you were saying is true cuz then someone we would see that car >> figure out >> cuz what you know what he's doing he's taking other people's information and he's you know causing them problems cuz now people's accounts are being compromised and their money's being stolen. >> Yeah. But if I told you everything I want I my life will be in jail if I remember when I stay. So, you're afraid if you tell us that they'll he'll come after you? >> I mean, we're not going to go if you tell him. This will most likely pass on. >> Anony's voice cracked as he confessed his fear. The officers tried to calm him down [Music] >> cuz right now >> you trying to you trying to get money for a check that you know is not good and believe is a felony. I have to go back and look cuz it's been a minute since I've had to charge anybody with that. But I'm pretty sure cuz you're you're telling us that you know it wasn't good, you know? So that's a felony charge and like she's telling you we don't really want to have to arrest you. You're down on your luck already and he's using you. You know what I mean? And that's not that's not I don't they're not the person I want to take to jail. It's not on you. I can tell that you're having a hard time, you know? >> So that's not what we want to do. >> It's him who's taking advantage of other people. >> Exactly. >> Cuz he's taking their money, right? And he's taking advantage of you. They're harder >> by putting you in the situation that you're in right now. >> It's that that's the person we'd rather have. [Music] >> You remember what the tag was? >> No. >> No. >> You know the phone numbers? >> No person. You have a pretty, you know, you have a little bit of text history there. So, it's not like today. >> Couple days. >> Couple days. You stay at a hotel. >> I I got you. >> Did you say orange in? You stay on to the orange in you're like um >> I stay on the street. >> Okay. >> I'm homeless. >> Did he get you over? I saw orange in and I know that >> I stay one night. He got me over. >> He got you. He got >> detectives explained that economic crime investigators would follow up. Anthony agreed to help, also to write a statement describing what happened. >> We have what they're called eco economic crime detectives who will come in and do some more investigating to help figure out where that money's coming from and where those checks are from. So, right now, we're trying to figure out who he is. And if you saw him again, would you be a ID him? All right. So, we're going to try to see if we can figure out who we think he is and then we'll go from there. Because since you >> he's getting the money from I heard we talked to a guy, he got his own business. It's a white guy. >> Mhm. >> The other guy, >> the guy that he's in contact with that does the checks. >> So, there's another guy who makes these checks. >> Yeah. A white guy. >> Okay. >> Okay. So, are you want to hang out with us for a few minutes to see if we can figure out who we think this walker guy is? >> Yes, ma'am. >> Okay. Cuz if we can, we may show you a photo lineup and see if maybe we have the right person or not. Okay. that way because I mean you're homeless so it's easier for us to do it now while you're still here with us then trying to find you later. Okay. >> And would you be willing to write a statement? >> Just asking. >> I won't force you. You sit here and think about it for a few minutes. All right. We're going to try to look up this information real quick. Okay. 04 nickname they had on the phone for it was KJack. K O J A C K. That was a nickname. He had the when he pulled up the phone number. That's a personal call. The number comes back to this. >> Sir, just just curious how old was the guy who roughly >> blackmail. >> Yeah. >> He had a gas lake. What would you say? 28 in the morning. 35 >> late 20s, early 30s. >> Late 20s, early 30s. >> He says late 20s, early 30s. >> After giving his written statement, Anthony was taken into custody. The police gently conveyed that helping them could ease his situation. >> Did you get in? >> It's It's not the text message. That's what I was asking about it. Um, >> so I know you're kind of worried about doing a statement. >> Okay. It's going to be private. It's not going to be anything public, anything you have to worry about with that. Okay. Again, we're really trying to get your side for the report. Okay. >> Are you willing to do a statement for us? Tell us just what exactly is going on with this dude. Yeah. Okay. One second. I have a pen written here for you for now. Don't worry about any of the top stuff. Okay. If you can just print your name right there and then pretty much exactly everything that you've been telling us that what's going on with this dude, how long you've known him, what you told us about doing it before, all the information you can give us. Okay, I appreciate it. >> If you need more space, let me know. I can get you another form. Okay, I also have a different cuz the text messages are on a different phone number which he also has accredited to this guy's name. Uh 504 If you can just sign there saying that your statement is true. [Music] >> Thank you. >> Um real quick, how old are you, sir? >> How old are you? >> I'm 47. >> 487. Yes, sir. >> Okay. >> Mr. Anthony, can you stand up for me? You can leave those right there. All right. Explain everything. Okay. [Music] All right. So, Mr. Anthony, what's going on today, okay, is due to what we have now, we we have to do this, okay? That said, we appreciate your cooperation, okay? We appreciate what you've given us. This is a now thing. This isn't like a forever kind of thing, hopefully. Okay, we're going to do is we're going to give your information that you gave us to a detective. Hopefully, they'll be able to get in contact with you and they'll be able to kind of get further on this so we can get the guy who's doing this to you, okay? because that's who you really want to get. Okay. Um, so >> Mr. Anthony was charged with uttering a forged check and defrauding a financial institution. He was sentenced to 3 months in jail. And as we close with these, here's when routine searches turned into chilling discoveries. First, two children were rescued from the grip of an abusive stepmother. Finally freed from torment. In another case, officers arrived just in time during a domestic violence attack where an ex stabbed his former girlfriend in front of her child after an argument. And finally, a twisted elderly woman accused of kidnapping kids and punishing them cruy was exposed, leaving officers stunned. Thanks for watching.
