we're looking at surprising cases of police officers who lost their jobs instantly because they broke the rules I'm leing I'm [Music] leaving Deputy Dustin wit March 11 2023 Deputy Dustin wit of Mer County responded to a 911 call the caller a man named Lewis Jackson had unfortunately crashed his car what's going on man how you doing good good yeah I don't know all right I'll see you when you get down all right so what happened I I I tried to take um Bel honestly for a short way to go down here but honestly I this road I I swear I just didn't even know where I was going as Deputy wit assessed the situation Lewis's girlfriend and another officer arrived in an attempt to handle the situation transparently and swiftly withit skip the standard sobriety test acknowledging Le's admission of being drunk I'm going to be transparent with you okay right all right um just because du the condition that the the car went through the fence and stuff and you did say you had been drinking right okay I'm going to have a a there's no need for a sobriety test or nothing right I'm I'm wa right here so look they're they're just they're going to do their test okay but I'm just wanted I'm not to waste your guys's time there's no need for S test I'm drunk I've been drink The Exchange remained calm until an off-hand comment by Deputy wit to Lewis's girlfriend escalated tensions Lewis reacted defensively which led to a physical altercation driver to drive the car right not necessarily you really that's not even that's not even crazy but for you to get out my girl like that stop BR I'm leaving I'm leaving it's okay we got him we got him got him okay place your hands behind your back what your hands behind your back now or you're going to get another tase despite LS being incapacitated the situation further spiraled as Deputy wit caught in the adrenaline of the moment continue to issue commands to the unconscious man listen [Music] tment hold yep okay he yelled for Lewis to roll over and sit up commands that went unanswered by the injured man on the ground roll over hey stop playing like that and roll over roll over come on roll over partner roll over roll over hey stop playing like that and roll over roll over come on come on Mercedes you start 11:41 roll over I'm sorry roll over I'm sorry sir I'm sorry I'm sorry sir sit up I'm Sor sit up this incident was captured by body cameras and witnessed by another officer on the scene the footage was clear and the actions of Deputy wit were deemed excessive and unnecessary the mer County Sheriff's Office responded swiftly to the incident sergeant its actions are unacceptable and does not reflect the training and Professional Standards taught by the Merced County Sheriff's Office this was not Deputy wit's first breach of conduct he had previously been demoted due to involvement in a bar fight in 2019 but had managed to regain his rank as sergeant following the incident with Lewis Deputy wit faced serious charges including felony assault by a public officer and assault likely to cause great bodily injury while the case makes its way through the court Dustin has since lost his job now let's move on to another incident that shows how quickly things can spiral out of control when the rules of the road and basic decency are ignored Thomas Kagel on December 30 2022 a simple Drive turned serious for Theodore Donnie when his car was rear ended the other driver Thomas Kagel quickly mentioned that he was a Salt Lake City police officer in other senses it's just ridicul oh my God you and you might need a new car feeling the situation might escalate Theodore decided to call 911 for help hello hi may I help you sorry I didn't realize my so I got someone rear ended me and I didn't realize my car was connected to my phone so can I get a cop to where are we again Common Sense the mall Common Sense by the Ogden mall are there any injuries uh I don't think so I kind of hit my head on the back Theodore couldn't free himself and it took his girlfriend's intervention to get him out from the uncomfortable and dangerous position oh my God oh my God oh my hold on hold on hold on hold on hold on after this scary moment Theodore was taken to the hospital to make sure he was okay meanwhile police officers began to arrive at the scene to find out what exactly happened he doesn't seem heavily intoxicated but the um the witness said that he was shoving a bunch of gum and spraying colog on himself as he was sitting in okay what was his name Tommy um Tommy hey Tommy yeah can you come out and talk to me real quick yeah hang on just sec let me give you a call back they needed to figure out if he was drunk because being under the influence could explain why he acted so recklessly Thomas tried to act normal and insisted he was okay but his action said otherwise that's how it goes brother you know that yeah you know how it is man okay so we got someone to come talk to you okay I'm just pissed off that I thought I threw it in par sure and it went reverse or not reverse but it went neutral MH up there I can not get it back into gear Jam yeah they noticed Thomas trying to hide signs that he might have been drinking are we doing DUIs well we're going to check real quick some complaints that I mean it's not like alcohol like said you know how it all goes so there do you smell alcohol on me I haven't really got close up but right you know how it goes right else I know some point during the altercation and uh it sounds like this family over here came over to check if they were okay driver one and then Sun there in the blue sweatshirt Witnesses yeah but it sounds like one of them may have gotten hit oh one of the witnesses one of the witnesses got hit the father was saying something about his son getting got I think you I think there were threats but I don't think you got punch I I'll double check though yeah I told him sir can you please get back in your car I don't I don't want anybody to start a fight today he basically says make me okay and starts and as he said gets in my face and being the protective dad that he is he tells him to to back off of me and he pops off well I'm AR like yeah that's real fun to say that when it was time for Thomas to take the rety tests he couldn't pass them his failure in these tests showed that he might have been driving after drinking which is dangerous and illegal face that way for me just based on the test okay go move your hands apart copy so I'm going to take you back to my station okay and we'll go kind of go from there all right did you say how much did you say you had to drink tonight uh so I went I only had I can show you like a taster shot over at um I don't even know what it's called Thomas's Behavior throughout the incident was troubling even after the crash and while being arrested he seemed mostly worried about minor things like getting personal items from his impounded car yeah I was in right other people how they freak out their dad came out do you even know if I can get my truck out of impound tonight tonight yeah no cuz you got to do the letter whole thing you got to get the impound no you're okay so are you doing we'll read that in a second what all do you need out of there the so groceries they're all shopping stuff just is it shopping stuff so like all the shopping bags out of there yeah the police charged Thomas with aggravated assault these charges were serious because Thomas's actions had caused real harm at his trial Thomas tried to explain his action I tried to put it in reverse immediately and it went to neutral but it would not go into reverse so the only option I had at that point he was trying to say it was a mistake with the car not that he had done anything wrong on purpose but this excuse did not convince the court because the evidence showed he had been negligent but I I can't make a finding why Mr Kel wanted to injure Mr Goodman I don't believe he did there's no reason for what happened to have occurred other than Mr Kel was being negligent the judge decided that Thomas was guilty of negligent operation of a vehicle this meant the judge believed
