When new recruits join the police force, they often believe that they know exactly what they signed up for until they have to deal with the most dangerous criminals that bring them face to face with the grim reaper himself. >> And he flipped the blade out and stuck it right in my face this close. He said, "I will you." >> What's my ear look like? >> I'm blasting. >> Yeah. All right. >> He's in cuss. You hit. >> Oh, fine. >> Here are six intense moments when rookie cops have to deal with the most dangerous criminals. Meet Gustavo Rico, the crazy guy who attacked Officer Gaza after tricking the officer into believing that he only needed help. >> What's going on, man? >> So, I pretty much like I left my cereal and my milk on the bus. And I'm already stressing because I don't want to talk about it. >> I'VE BEEN STABBED. >> IT'S IN THE BUS. >> OH, SNAKE. ON NOVEMBER THE 23RD, 2025, at approximately 7:25 p.m., two police officers in Houston were at a CVS on Milan Street, where a man, later identified as Gaustova Sandoval Rico, approached them to request help. The officers quickly responded, unaware that the seemingly distressed man who needed help would put their lives on the line just moments later. >> What's going on, M? So, I pretty much like I left my cereal and my milk on the bus and I'm already stressing because I don't want to talk about it. >> Okay. >> Literally, unless y'all want to know. >> Yeah. Talk outside. >> Come on. >> Okay. >> [ __ ] >> And I'm freaking out, bro. >> Okay. Well, first of all, don't be slamming the doors if you're freaking out. >> That's how I opened it. I just went like this. >> Relax. You want to play with me? >> I'm not playing with y'all. >> What the hell are you reaching for? Stop. >> You ain't going to shoot me, bro. >> What are you reaching for? >> Let me go, bro. >> Don't you [ __ ] reach. You understand me? >> Then shoot empty out that right now. >> Don't you [ __ ] reach. >> Empty it. Come on, bro. I don't got TIME FOR YOU, COPS. GO ASK YOUR SERGEANT. >> You came You came to us, man. >> Let Let me walk over there and I'll tell you what's going on. >> No, you're going to stay right here. >> Right here. >> You're not going to tell me what to do. My freedom came to us. >> Tomorrow's my promise, bro. >> You came to us >> because y'all are the police that can send us another unit code, >> but instead y doing this [ __ ] that always they always do. And I'm not trying to go. You want me to go into the start going into codes and statues? >> What's going on? What happened to the milk and cereal? >> Tell them that. >> What is your name? >> My name is Rico. >> What's going on there? >> Okay, hold on. >> It's going to be the individual we were talking to is having a mental breakdown of some sort. He's getting um aggressive with us. >> Gus, man, you're wasting my time, bro. I'm going to walk away, bro. or any matter what >> send weapon involved. >> S A N D. >> Okay. >> Not that we know about it right now. He was reaching his back waistband. >> So, uh, we're about to go hand get him detained and let you, you know, grab 4198. You're not going to touch him. >> 419. >> I'm on everything I look. I don't give a >> You're going to empty that. >> I'm a dad, bro, and I haven't seen my son in a long time. We're trying to help you. >> And over here >> you came to us for help. So we left. >> Keep walking, man. Keep walking. We're trying to help you. You understand that? >> Yes, I know. >> Did you take any >> Relax? Stop reaching. >> Don't try. You get close. Chill out. >> You need to relax. Look, >> you need to chill out. >> I'm trying, bro. I am chilling, but you're not going to touch me. I didn't break no law. I didn't do nothing suspicious. >> And I know my statue is closed, bro. And I will sue you >> because I'm going to record you. >> Stop recording. Hey, I came into CVS over here. >> Come here. Come here. Come here. >> No. >> COME HERE, MAN. WE'RE GOING TO HELP YOU. >> They're going to tonight. >> We're not going to you tonight. >> Stop. >> Hey, y'all don't tonight. Come here. Come here. Okay. >> I want to SEE MY SON. >> WE'RE GOING TO TAKE MY SON, MAN. >> I'M NOT GOING WELFARE CHECK. >> Ware check. Y'all going to get it. Don't you dare. Come here. Come here. Don't come here. >> BACK UP. BACK UP. BACK UP. MY SON, >> GET AWAY. >> MY SON, >> I've been stabbed. >> For what it's worth, these rookie officers knew exactly what they had signed up for when they joined the force. Yet, even so, it was unbelievable to watch their lives flash before their eyes in an instant. Back up. >> Where is he? >> Oh my god. >> You got to get something to stop this bleeding. >> Y'all got to get something to stop this bleeding. >> You okay? You're okay. >> Hey, put pressure on your head. I'm good. >> I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. I'm good. 21 m away. >> I still have my gun. He still has a knife in his hand. He's not responsive. >> Sir 1953. Come here. >> I I need a guard. >> Okay. >> 13. We can get HF here. trying to lose consciousness. >> You okay? You okay? >> Yeah. >> You okay? >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. >> Yeah. I'm good. I'm good. >> I'm good. I'm good. >> You have citizen? No, my camera deated. I reate just now. >> What's going on? >> Stay over there, man. >> Yeah. Put all that pressure on. >> What's going on? >> Okay. Let me push it. >> I got I got pressure. >> Have a seat. Have a seat. Have a seat, guard. >> No, cuz I'm good. I'm good. >> You're okay. This is Have a seat. Have a seat. >> Have a seat. Have a seat. Have a seat. HAVE A SEAT. >> Come on. Are you okay? >> I got to go out. They're in my car. >> While Gustavo later succumbed to his injuries, the injured officer was transported to the hospital where he went on to make a full recovery. Although officer Gaza had a close call with a grim reaper, he was not as unfortunate as officer Brett Bowler, who ended up struck by a firearm in his thigh while engaging notorious Devon in a heated chase. On April the 5th, 2023, at approximately 3:20 p.m., an MTA bus driver flagged down NYPD officers Anthony Rock and his partner Brett Bowler for help. Apparently, a 22-year-old named Devon Spragggins was aboard the MTA bus traveling on Jamaica Avenue and had just punched a fellow passenger as the bus came around 161st Street. The officers who had only recently joined the NYPD and were patrolling the Jamaica business district quickly approached the front door of the bus completely unprepared for that stunt Devon was about to pull. I got it. You I got it. I got it. The officers took off after Devon without hesitation, completely unaware that this bold pursuit was about to spiral into something far more dangerous than they could have ever anticipated. Devon Spragggins was arrested the following day and charged with attempted murder in the first degree, assault in the first degree, menacing a police officer, two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, tampering with physical evidence, and assault in the third degree. In the end, he was sentenced to 39 years in prison. Officer Ba returned to duty after making a full recovery. While other dangerous criminals chose to stand toe-to-toe with rookie cops, 23-year-old Andrew Garcia decided that he would rather crash in homes than let cops take him to jail. >> Hey, show me your hands right now. >> I got it. >> Show me your hands. >> I got something. >> He has something. Uh not making it clear what he has. He said he's loading his fire. >> On June the 1st, 2025, Fresno officers responded to a residence to apprehend 23-year-old Andrew Garcia, wanted in connection with fleeing from police during a traffic stop. Further investigation revealed that he was a parole with outstanding warrants for violating his parole. Thanks to their prior encounter with him, the officers arrived well prepared, but the events that would unfold were going to prove that they were probably not as prepared as they had thought. >> Hey, how's it going? How you doing? >> Being good, man. How are you? >> You remember us yesterday, dude? >> Yeah, I'm good. Nothing. >> Where's Andrew at? >> Is he here? >> We're going to be checking. >> Hey, is he here? Yes or no? >> Yeah. >> Take a seat. >> Where's he at? Mhm. >> Hey, swords here. >> Hey, show me your hands right now. He punched out the window. Show me your hands, dude. >> I got it. >> Show me your hands. >> I got something. >> He's saying he has a gun. What do you have? >> Watch out. Watch out. Watch out. down. >> Go back. >> Sam 13 m's inside. He's advising he has something. Uh not making it clear what he has. He said he's loading it. >> Hey, get it back. I'm >> Hey, Andrew. Show me your hands. Show me your hands. >> 14, we have them in the south side. He's definitely a car. Andrew. Andrew. >> Hey, we don't want to hurt you, bro. Just come out and make contact with us. >> Hey, is there anything I can say or do to get you to peacefully surrender? Bro, >> this isn't worth it. It really isn't. Why is that? Talk to me. Right there. >> Yeah. >> He's leg westbound. He's leg eastbound. see your hands. Let me see your hands. >> He's in the car. He's in the car. >> Let me see your car. Let me see your hands. >> He's going away. Let me see your hands, bro. >> Let me see your hands. >> Let me see your hands. >> Let me see your hands. I got you right there. >> Fired. >> Proceeded into uh one of the residents. >> While the officers waited for Andrew to surrender, he was already plotting his escape, ramming through the backyard, crashing into multiple homes, and causing significant property damage. Ultimately, he was overpowered and taken into custody. He was charged with resisting arrest, vandalism, obstructing a police officer, and felony possession of a firearm. Somewhere in the Dinsmore area of Jacksonville, a green officer sustained serious bodily injuries simply because he stepped in to prevent 31-year-old Cory Sweeney from taking his mother's life. >> I'll cut you up with my knife. I said, Cy. And he went back in his room and came out. >> Mhm. >> With a knife. >> What's my ear look like? Oh, >> yeah. All right. >> He's going to cuss you. You hit. I'm fine. >> On December the 15th, 2025, a deputy of Jacksonville Sheriff's Office received a 911 call from a woman reporting that her son was making some threatening statements. >> Jacksonville 911. What's the location? Emergency. >> Um, >> is that a house or an apartment? >> Mobile home. >> Is it on private property? Uh, yes. >> What's going on, ma'am? >> Uh, my son is using a >> Okay. Anyone drinking? Do anyone have any weapons? >> My ass, [ __ ] If you come around me, I'm die slow. >> What? Die [ __ ] slow. If you come over this, I'M GOING [ __ ] BLOW YOU UP, [ __ ] DIE, slow my [ __ ] You hear me? You not call this home again. You understand me? At first, when the woman began speaking, the officers almost dismissed her claims as just another heated family dispute. But the moment they heard the suspect hurling threats, they realized the caller's safety was at stake and that whatever happened next was going to depend entirely on how quickly they could reach her residence. >> We're here. First and foremost, are you okay? >> Can I just take a look at your face and everything like that? >> I don't rapids. I'm showing that complainant on the 30. >> He is paranoid schizophrenic. >> Okay. parents are >> and he takes his medication regularly as far as I know. >> He was sitting on the couch. I was I have a daughter in the hospital with pancreatic cancer. >> Okay. >> So, I've been really busy with her. I had to come home and get some rest to go back up there. >> I was sitting in my chair watching TV for a few minutes and he said, "You will respect me." Looked at him. I said, "What?" >> Yeah. >> And he said, "You will respect me." This is my And it's not his house. >> Okay. It's ours. >> We own quite a few pieces. It's my ex-husband. Okay. >> And uh >> it escalated from there. He started telling me he was going to go outside and get some needles and stab me with them. >> Mhm. >> Um uh and then he said, "Matter of fact, I'll I I'll I'll cut you up with my knife." I said, "Corey." And he went back in his room and came out. >> Mhm. >> With a knife. Popped the blade out. Blades about that long. >> Is it like a switch blade? Is it like a carpenter's knife? >> It's not switch blade. It's more like a a uh a hunter's knife. Okay. Kind of. I I've never seen it before, so I don't know. >> Okay. >> Um and um of course I'm sitting down. He's over top. He's big. He's big boy. >> Um and he flipped the blade out and stuck it right in my face. This close. He said, "I will kill you. >> You hear me? I will kill you." >> At that point, I was scared. I've never been scared of him before. >> Okay. He stepped back a little bit and he started doing like that. He barely Excuse me. I'm sorry. That's okay. It's okay. He uh >> just barely missed me. >> Um and he told me he said, "Get out of explicit words. Out of my house." >> Get the house. >> Oh, yeah. Excuse my No, no, no, no. That's fine. >> Okay. >> But um uh so I came out. >> Mhm. >> And he locked the door behind me. Uh he well at one point he threw my keys at me while we were inside >> and um it doesn't have the fob on it. >> Okay. >> So I couldn't get my car. >> Okay. >> Um >> is this the house right here? Is this the car? >> He's got my phone. >> Okay. >> He threw me or did throw me? Let me rephrase that. He kind of pushed me down on the couch and grabbed my phone. >> Well, while you were on the phone with 911, did he take your phone from you? >> Sounds good. Okay. >> So they heard it all. >> Yep. Yeah. >> Or a lot of it. Anyway, >> y >> I recorded him >> uh and he didn't know I was recording when he was talking about >> Okay, sounds good. >> Well, not perfect, but it's good. Okay. >> Is this where he is right now in this trailer right here? >> Yes, >> he is paranoid schizophrenic. Um I came over here to I moved over here with him to try to help him >> and um do No, he has her phone. >> Oh, okay. >> Yeah. >> All right. So, let's go do Let's go do this. So, just do me a favor. Stay right here. >> As up and cominging officers, this was one of those high stakes duty calls that made them question their career choice. Now they had to confront a knife wielding maniac with no way of knowing what awaited them the moment the door swung open. >> Come on, man. >> Come on out. >> He's right here. >> Yeah, he moved. >> Do you have anything in his hand? Can you see anything? >> If you come out here with that knife, we will you look like a statement. >> Come on. Oh, she's already said >> you better put it up. >> That knife, we will shoot you. >> Come on. >> Come on, man. Get out. >> Shot in there. >> No. >> Open it. >> No. What are you doing, MAN? COME ON. >> WHAT YOU GOT, [ __ ] BOY? COME ON, [ __ ] COME ON. Come on. >> Why you wrecking your house? >> Get off my property. Get off my property right now. My last warning. >> We're not doing that. >> My last warning. >> Or what? Or what? >> Or I'm going I've got a shotgun. I got I got a shot. >> Show us what it is. >> Come on up. >> I got it. >> Is that a stick? Yeah, it's like a like a floorboard or something maybe. What are you doing, man? >> Oh yeah, he been saying that. >> Hey, Binks, come here. >> What's my ear look like? Tell me. >> Yeah, let me be online. Okay. >> All right. Cuz as you know, we got the place surrounded and we're not going anywhere. There you go. >> Okay. Hey, come on out. Keep your hands up. Put your hands up. >> Keep your hands up. You can wear your helmet. That's fine. >> You can You can come Come on out. >> How many times I got to tell you to get off my >> All right. Well, come on up. Hey, drop the hammer. >> Drop the hammer. >> Drop the hammer. Hey, drop the hammer now. >> Stop moving. >> Stop moving. DROP IT. GET ON THE GROUND. GET ON THE GROUND. Right now on the ground on the ground you get come over here but get down on the ground. >> Contact the door. already came out with the hammer but then went back into the wall. >> Huh? >> Correct. >> Back it up. >> He's scared of the dog. I asked you to come out with your hand. >> Stop the door. >> With your hands up. Nothing in your hands. >> Come out with your hands. >> COME OUT WITH YOUR HANDS UP. >> WITH YOUR HANDS UP. Nothing in your hands. >> At this point, the officers knew it was only a matter of time before he surrendered. He had sustained some injuries, and no matter how tough he was claiming to be, they understood he couldn't afford to let himself bleed out. Nobody >> comply with us and we will not shoot you. If you compare and have stay on your left hand, Come on out the [ __ ] out. >> Come on out. >> Coming up. All right. >> Yep. Hey. >> All right. >> Come on. Walk to the side of my boy. >> Gory. >> Walk straight up. Keep your hands up. >> Gory, keep walking. >> Keep walking. >> Stop right there. Lift your shirt. Lift your shirt into your waistband. Gory, lift your shirt so I can see your waistband. >> Lift your shirt >> so I can see your waist. Turn around. Turn around. All right. Face me. Face me. Walk to me. Walk to the center of my voice. >> Keep your hands up. >> Keep your hands up. Keep coming. Keep coming. >> Keep coming. >> Keep coming. Stop. Turn around. Walk backwards to the sound of my voice. Walk backwards to the sound of my voice. >> Okay, >> keep coming. >> I got hands. >> Keep coming. Keep coming. Stop. Go down to both knees. Cross your Keep your hands up behind you. Palms up. Hands up behind you. Palms up. Do not move. >> Okay. Okay. Okay. I think you got me. Holy crap, man. Okay, I'm >> in cussy. You hit. >> I'm fine. I'm fine. >> Stand up. Stand up. >> I got this. >> He is. He's looking at him now. Hey. Hey. Are you the only one in there? Is anybody else in there? No. You sure? >> All right. Jeez. You can take a group. >> Sweeney was later transported to the hospital for medical treatment before taken to jail on multiple charges, including aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and domestic battery. That green cop certainly suffered an ill fate in the hands of Cory. But it was nothing compared to this newbie in the force who almost lost his life during a high-speed chase with 37year-old Enrique Cortez Jr. >> Yeah. So he's that's a that's a real gun now. He's got a gun on him. >> YOU'RE IN THE BLACK. STOP. DROP THE GUN. >> On April the 14th, 2025, at around 3:20 p.m., San Diego officers received a 911 call reporting a rather disturbing situation. >> 911 emergency dispatcher 8876. >> Hey, good afternoon, ma'am. Um, I'm seeing uh an individual being kind of erratic um outside of the vehicle and I just noticed um might have been a rifle um in the middle of a tire. He's like carrying a tire uh empty tire and then he had like the rifle inside of the tire carrying the tire around. Um he's currently outside of the vehicle. >> Can you still hear him yelling? >> Yeah. You still can't make out what he's saying now. >> Uh, no. Just something about a bicycle. Someone just uh uh walk by a uh drove by in a bicycle. Um >> Okay, >> that's that's it. Talking to that guy. >> Yeah. So, he's That's a That's a real gun now. He's got a gun on him and he uh >> Is it out now? Uh yes. So not longer the rifle. He did uh fire a >> Okay. I thought that's what I heard. All right. One shot fired in the background. >> He's arguing. He's arguing with a uh guy in a bicycle right now. He just to kick the bicycle. He pointed the weapon at him. >> Okay. Did he the gun up in the air or did he shoot the guy he's arguing with? >> No, he at the the ground. >> At this point, the officers didn't need any more details to know that someone was on the verge of losing their life if they delayed even a single minute. Hey, >> is this the gun? Yeah. Hey, get over here. Get over here. Get over here. What's >> stop? He's right here. >> Stay over here on the side. Stay over here. >> Hey. Hey. If I was you, I'll go to that little park. Hey. To the little park. >> Where's he going right now? >> He's right there in the middle of the little park >> within park. >> You can creep up on it. Bam. >> All right. Keep it. >> Hey, he's heading he's heading southbound, right? He's heading that way. He's right there. All right. Did you guys hit hear where the signals at? Is that okay or? >> Yeah. All right. Stay right here. Right here. Okay. >> It's right here. Right me. Pointing at me. >> It's pointing at you. Hey, he's pointing right. It's pointing at him right now. >> It's pointing at him. It's pointing at him right now. >> Pointing at who? >> Pointing at him right now. >> Where? >> Right here. Down the down. Down the down the brick wall. Hey, send the police. YOU'RE IN THE BLACK. STOP. DROP THE GUN. >> Instead of cooperating with the officers, Cortez jumped into a parked white Ford F-150 and sped off, igniting a high-speed pursuit. During the chase, he fired four shots into the air, perhaps a tactic to intimidate the officers. But he was dealing with the wrong kind of officers, and he would soon learn that. After what felt like an endless pursuit, one of the officers executed a pit maneuver on his vehicle, hoping to bring it to a stop. Yet, just as one crisis ended, another was already looming. Hey, I got my dog. Got my dog. I got my dog. >> Go, go, go, go. >> Hey, dog. Got it. Got it. Got it. I'm [ __ ] I'm right here. Right here. >> Don't move. Get your hands out the window. Don't move. In the end, Cortez succumbed to his injuries while the K-9 officer, who had also been hurt, was transported to the hospital and made a full recovery. Just when you thought that these rookie officers could not encounter a criminal more dangerous than Cortez. Along comes the heart-wrenching moment a rookie officer Andrew found himself at the mercy of Antonio after responding to what was supposed to be a routine duty call. >> You're a rookie. You're a rookie. Going up. You're a rookie. Go. >> Please, sir. Please. Please. Please don't do that. Don't shoot. Don't shoot. I'm not. >> Drop the gun. I don't have it. Look. Look. The day was the 8th of December, 2021 when Oklahoma City Officer Andrew Ash had reasoned to visit a residential apartment following reports of a disturbance. Officer Andrew at the time was barely 2 years into service. When he arrived at the residence, he was unaware that he would be facing Antoine Hill, a criminal who would prove to be too much for him to handle. >> Can I receive what you have? Okay, put it down on the ground. >> Wait, you're rookie. You're a rookie. You're a rookie. You don't know. You're a rookie. Go go go. >> Okay, stay right there. For reasons even he couldn't explain, Officer Andrew froze. His instincts failed him and his training slipped through his fingers like water. He knew his life was in danger. But in that moment, fear gripped him tighter than any weapon ever could. And now he was completely at the mercy of Antoine, who stood over him with cold eyes, fully capable of deciding whether Andrew would live or do not move. Stay right there. Just stay over there. Please, sir. Please. Please. Please don't do that. >> 73. I got a guy with a gun. I'm not doing anything. Look, I'm not doing Don't shoot. Don't shoot. >> I I'm not I'm not going to shoot your ass. >> Don't shoot. Don't shoot. >> I'm going to shoot your ass. Don't get dropped your gun. >> I I don't have it. Look, look. I don't have it. I don't I don't have it. >> Shots fired. Shots fired. The guy has a gun over here. Isabella, >> I'm okay, but I need backup. >> Fortunately, he spared the officer's life and barricaded himself inside the apartment shortly after. He was eventually arrested by a tactical team and charged with possession of a firearm after a felony conviction.
