Quiet homes don't always mean peaceful lives. >> Just down here. Hey. Who are you? >> My dad. My dad. What happened? >> Who shot your dad? >> Who else is here? My sister. She's in the back? Yeah, she's in her room. Is she okay? I I think so. Everyone in that house was shot in the head. It's after you. Intentional? I would say that you wanted to massacre that family. Sometimes what officers find behind closed doors can be devastating. >> Well, I wanted to call you. You told me told you that tell my parents or I'll find one. What made you do that? I don't know. Something bad spirit possessed me. >> So, is there four people dead? Yes. Everybody here? Okay, put your hands behind your back. I'll take your Here are the times when cops discover a family massacre, starting with the case of Carol Ray, a daughter who concealed her mother's disappearance until her son began to asking questions. So, what your expectation is that this woman here is your mother is hiding your grandmother from you. >> Yeah. We can get through it, but right now what you're doing is you're hiding somebody who's possibly dead, okay? >> Absolutely not. You're going to have to do that. I should fit in here. I mean Ooh, body Oh. All right. There's a body in there. Yeah. Where? On the 22nd of January 2020, officers arrived at a residence after the homeowner's grandson contacted police deeply concerned by her sudden and unexplained disappearance of his grandmother. He told officers it was unusual for his grandmother to go days without contact, especially without warning or explanation. According to him, Patricia had routines she never broke, and her silence was raising alarm bells. Um grandma's Patricia. Mom is Carol. Hi. Are you Carol? >> Yes. Is Patricia here? No, she's not. She's getting her B12 or something like that with Dr. Depasquale. It's not written down anywhere in here. Uh maybe on Northbrook, but with Dr. T on the old calendar. This little girl. This is my daughter, Allison, her granddaughter. Hi. Oh, okay. >> Does she live here with you? Yeah, we live together. Your grandma? Or your my mom? Sorry. Yeah, she's been uh She's been staying over at her sister's house for a couple of um couple of days cuz we just got diagnosed with pneumonia and got home from the hospital. I had a diverticulitis that ruptured. Okay. So So she's back here though, staying here primarily now? Clothes, I mean all of her clothes and everything are here. Um she came by yesterday and she was here last Not last night, but night before last and she was here yesterday for until about 5:00 p.m. and pick up her medications. Okay. >> And a fresh change of clothes and stuff like that. >> Okay. Well, the reason we're here is because your children are concerned about your grandma. >> My son, John, yeah, he sent you guys over last night, which I confronted my mother about and she had a fit and I was going to go down to the Arizona Police Department today about it. Well, there's a little bit of a financial money issue between my mother and my oldest son, John. Okay. And he borrows money from her and doesn't repay it. He's got a truck in the backyard she bought him, a car in the garage she bought him and then they all she took back because he wouldn't pay the insurance on it. So, my mom is a very finicky woman. She got I see a problem now. Call him when I got damn ready to call him. I got things to take care of. >> Right. Okay, okay, okay. My mom will be >> is your mom? I said she's 69 this year. >> Where is her room here? I know. It's right back here. Can we just look at it? Yeah, of course. You wear clothes and everything. I'm sorry, baby. Want to show them where Grandma B's room is? Her room was the last one on the right. Alice is the first one on the left here. You let Naily sleep in this bedroom since Grandma B spends the night over there. So you can have her stuff in there. All my mom's stuff is And all her clothes are in there. All my mom's stuff is right there. Her fresh clothes that she just washed. Okay. Okay. All right. We're good. We just need We get the call, you know, and then there's one side of the story and then there's the other. So, if he's got everyone worked out, like he might call someone else, might call, and you don't want to show up here a million times, so we want to just hear in person, "Hey, you're fine." That's all we need to do. Okay. Okay? All righty. All righty. Thank you. You're welcome. Have a good day. Although her daughter insisted Patricia was alive and receiving medical care, officers were uneasy because no one had seen her. When detectives contacted the clinic directly, they learned Patricia was never there. The case immediately took a darker turn. Investigators spoke with John again to clarify his grandma's whereabouts. I just don't get why my grandma make a Facebook post saying she's at home, you guys show up and she's not there. And that was literally 2 minutes ago. As soon as you pulled away, she texts in my dad that There may be other circumstances that we're not aware of or the family's not aware of. So, what what your expectation is that this woman here is what your mother is hiding your grandmother from you. >> Yeah. For what reason? >> She's trying to take the money from her that you think she's entitled to you. Okay. I don't know. Your grandmother, what My grandma raised us. Raised you. Okay. Okay. Generally, yes. I'm really upset Right. Okay. My mom has never been in my life. And I just don't want my grandma to be passed away and she's collecting or hopefully she's just hiding her cuz she's sick. Mhm. And my grandma doesn't want us to know. I'd rather have a pissed off grandma than a missing or dead. Well, if she's then, I mean, if she's got a the body hiding somewhere or has done away with her, I mean, and then trying to collect social security or whatever she receives, I I mean, that takes some effort. My grandma has fraudulently uh has These are four charges When was it wet down? A couple of years ago. A couple of years ago? Okay. And what happened to those charges? I think my grandma decided to not pursue them. Okay. Police had like to lock her up cuz that's what got her, but I'm not trying to get her in trouble, but why would you keep lying and lying and lying? But so that's why I'm speaking that nothing's going to happen to her now. My grandma just texted me again. Okay. So The cops are in my house again. My grandma's not allowed in the house. John's claims about his mother were unsettling, yet possible. Detectives widened their scope, interviewing both John and T.J. Carol Zax, whose stories strangely mirrored one another. And now, you haven't had any voice contact with her since Thanksgiving. >> her Facebook. I know it's not her just because of the words they use. It's not how my grandma talks. When was the last time you saw Carol? Last time I saw Carol, period? >> Not Carol, um Patricia. >> Oh, okay. I'm like I'm like every time I drop my daughter off. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, it's like Patricia. Contact with Patricia, yes. Yeah. It was around Halloween time. I did receive one text message the other day stating that she was um sorry for holding up Carol. Carol and my daughter were supposed to hang out because it was my birthday this weekend. And around 6:00 or so, I text her. I'm like, "What the [ __ ] going on? You know it's my birthday. We're supposed to be celebrating it and blah blah blah." So, you, Carol, and Alice were supposed to be celebrating on Sunday, your birthday. Right. And then, um I get a text message from Carol Carol's mom, but it doesn't read like Carol's mom, but it says, "Sorry I'm holding her up, signing over the cars and giving her title to house and insurance stuff so she can get that stuff by Monday." It gets kind of when Carol types the last time, it comes up kind of uh misspelled. It's cuz she don't wear her glasses and stuff like that. The only contact that you've had with her was from a random message. And she said that she was with my aunt. So, I did some research. I went there today and spoke with my aunt. She hadn't spoken with my grandma since 2015. And she was messaging me today while we were there with the cops saying that she was home. She messaged my dad that she was home, but we knew she wasn't there cuz the cops were there. My dad screenshotted them all and sent me those messages. Okay. Can you email those to me? Um what I do know and I do know and I mean in this type of situation I would hope it's more true than it is the other is um I've been I mean I have no Like I said, I have no care of what I've been doing. I mean like bold face like you can show her like here's a picture of you and I have. Here's a picture of you doing this and da da Tell me. I mean so so she's always been a a chronic chronic liar. Like especially when she's off her meds. Um she cuz she does take um lots of medicine longer than I I think even when we were together. I mean you you I'm sure you can get her list of medicines that she was taking, but I guess she she lost she lost her um therapist. So, she has not had medicine for last couple months. And when that happens things get kind of wonky with her. Many other conversations and then calling the house phone social media off of it messenger calling her that way texting her nothing and then on 12th of January my mom texted me off her phone saying grandma beast sleeping getting over pneumonia here. I was like have her call me. I need to hear her voice. She never does this. She always calls me. And there was no response. With multiple accounts pointing in the same direction, officers suspected something far more serious was unfolding. They returned to Carol's home for a third and final visit. >> Hello. Hi again. Hi. Is she here now? No, she's at the behavioral health center or institute getting her B12 shot. I'm sorry. I don't mean to be creepy with you, but where is she at? just We're just getting complete information as well. >> The doctor's office that you told us she went to, she's not there. Woods Cardiovascular is where she goes. Dr. Paz is who treats her leukocytic white blood cell cancer. Not the white blood cell cancer. >> Okay, cuz you said she was at Woods Cardiovascular. Because she has a lot of doctors What's your What's your daughter's name? It's Allison. Allison? Allison. Allison. And who's she getting complete information from? It's a nice balloon. Well, she didn't say Can I see it? Oh, thank you. I can't keep all of them. They're all mine. >> Woods Cardiovascular is where she's been treated. Mhm. Mhm. Yeah. So, I guess is where she's been treated for a long time with Dr. >> did she get there? And how did she get there? Her sister drives her or I drive her. >> You didn't drive her today, so today And sometimes her neighbor across the street How did she get there today, though? I believe her sister. Her sister? Yes. The sister that lives in Warren? Yes. Okay. But you don't have your sister's number? I don't talk to my or my Well, last night >> she stayed over there. When the officer came here, she did not speak directly to her. No, you spoke to me. Okay. Because she was at my aunt's. She was here yesterday night before last. Is that your phone? >> here. Yes, it's the one I just gave you. Listen, we just want to know where this lady is. I understand, but you guys are upsetting me, bothering me, upsetting me. She doesn't look upset. Um Cuz you don't hear what she says when she leaves. I just went through a really bad domestic violence or situation and CPS up my butt for 10 to 2. We're not even here That's not what we're here for. We're here to find out if your mom's okay. We got a bunch people who are concerned about her, and no one seems to know where she is. My son's father, my son and his brother, which he's got his brother on high alert now, which his brother's wife was just here yesterday morning while my mom was laying on the couch to pick up $200 to do her tabs in the car from my son's car. Right. That going hurt. >> Okay. Yeah. What about I mean I can show you a picture of my daughter and my mom. She's sending messages telling everyone she's here. She's currently here. No, she's coming back here cuz she just called. She just called. Why don't you call her right now? While we're here. Yeah. If she's on her way then shortly we'll be able to resolve this. I turned this back on for her. Yeah. You can see that I'm actually Oh. You want to put on speaker phone? Will she answer you? I don't know. She would have to figure out her beat while she was I'm sorry. She was talking you were talking. Phone was ringing. What did you say? Why can't your mother directly speak to John? Not through a message, not through text. She can't. I don't have nothing to do with her and John though. Well, that's why we're here. >> I'm getting stuck in the middle of it. >> Yes, and so are we. So are we and we have to figure it out. We have to figure out Sorry. Why don't you try to call her again? What's the doctor's office she's at? Which car are you No, the Webber Cancer Center is behind Macomb Hospital. This time Carol's demeanor changed considerably. Her composure cracked raising immediate concerns. It was now more obvious than ever that there was more to her than meets the eyes. She's Detective Burleigh. Excuse me. I see. I see. All right. So we're going to I mean if you don't mind we'll get you sent for me to search the house to see if there's anything that would lead us to think of where she may have went with to help you out and figure out where she is planned. Mhm. She didn't She didn't tell you who otherwise, right? You were under the impression she was supposed to be with her sister. Yes. That's what she told you. >> Yes. Who Who lives in the house? I do, my mom, and this little girl for a little older. Has she done this in the past? My mom does it to leave where where she what she But your But your son seemed pretty concerned that she was in there. With her joint? Yeah. Yeah. But she tells you that she's with your assistant or assistant or what? >> That's got me That's concerning, correct? That's got me worried but I'm not worried but aggravated. >> answering her phone calls. The people that she says she's with she's not. Mhm. That's got me aggravated. Because I won't feel right if I leave this house without looking for anything to point us in the right direction. Mhm. I want to do my job properly and make sure that And I guarantee when she walks back in this door and she finds out that I searched for her through her stuff to help try to find her, she's probably going to be okay with it because that's what most people would be okay with, correct? I'll open up her bedroom door so you can see her stuff or whatever. I'll unlock the car for you so you can look at it and whatever or whatever you want to do. I don't want to sign anything and get in trouble. Okay. I just hope it goes Okay. When your mom left, did she take like a toothbrush, a bag of clothes, like she was spending the night anywhere? Well, she had a purse on and her phone and her meds. Yeah, does she normally sleep over people's house without um Well, she does She did it this time but she has in the past. With her puzzles, right? She does have obviously medical issues. Oh yeah, she's had medical issues for a while. She takes What I'm saying is that that's also when we're looking at somebody being missing it's concerning because anything can happen when she's sick. COPD, she's got She's had a stroke already. Um me and her son she can die at any time. She has a blood clot on her shoes. I'm not joking. You weren't seeming very concerned. I'm trying I'm more concerned for your mom than you are. Like >> concerned. I just I've talked to her and seen her in the past this 24 48 hours. And But now >> And I'm frustrated because she's lied to me about talking to my aunt and I don't know why she would do that. So I mean we're concerned because your mom Your mom left but she didn't even pack a bag to go, you know? For overnight, she wouldn't, we won't. Even when she came out to my trailer that I was remodeling off of Long Road. So, for like an overnight, you don't pack like a just a toothbrush, a change of clothes, underwear? >> have any teeth. Obviously, something's going on here. We're fairly certain something's going on. We need to start fresh. And we need to tell you we need you to tell us exactly what happened. Your story's not adding up. Your story's very very quickly. You're extremely nervous. Well, yeah, I had the police here last night and today. Carol, obviously, something probably happened to your mother, right? You know something that you're not telling us. That's That's apparent to us. We're We're trained investigators. We We know when something's not right, and something isn't right. You have many people outside of you that are concerned about your mother's whereabouts. Where is she at, Carol? I don't know, because she honestly this is what she told me when she left here. >> Well, listen to me. Two things. You're lying a lot. Okay? I'm I'm now at a point where I don't believe anything you're saying, okay? I've now confirmed another part of your story that's wrong. So, you need to come clean now, let me know where your mother's at. If she's in this house or in your garage, that she passed away from natural causes or whatever it is, and you didn't want to do anything cuz maybe you needed some extra money for social security or whatever it is, we can get through it, but right now what you're doing is you're hiding somebody who's possibly Okay? >> Absolutely not. Carol, she hasn't been in this house in 2 months, 3 months. >> has. She's got dirty clothes in the laundry room. She's got clean clothes hanging right there. What does that have to do with anything? That That's That's It's here nor there. I don't I mean What's going on? What's going on in your life? Her hairbrush is out there. Yeah, that's odd because she left for the night. Wouldn't she want to brush her hair in the morning? As inconsistencies mounted, investigators moved quickly. Carol's boyfriend, Ricky, who had been staying at the house, gave consent to search the property. A fortunate decision that would change everything. What was the last time you saw Patricia? Like physically saw her in person? Physically saw her, it's probably been about a month. Would you mind coming to the station with us? So we can just sit there and talk? It's just a uh Well, we're trying to find We want to find Patricia, but we're getting She's not at her sister's house? No. How long have >> on me and she's lied on me and Who's lied on you? Like Carol. She's cheated on me, yeah. Cuz she's the one that told me that she was at her sister's house. With the search underway, long-awaited answers were finally within reach. Boyfriend's here. This one will look up here real You open that? I should fit in here. I mean Ooh, bloody Oh, all right. What did you say? Bloody towels. They're in here. It's all It's She's in there. She's in the house? Oh, she's in there. She's in there? Go around, let me see. Oh, hold on. I don't know. Hold on. Oh, hold on. I don't know. I'm not just What? Nah. I don't know. He's looking. He's looking at all Nah, nothing. I think we I opened up that grave then and it's full of bloody towels. It stinks like a Are you kidding me? Swear to god. >> Huh? For what? If it's in there Bodecker wants us >> For what? If they're searching for the body. If there's one There's a body pillow in here inside. Yeah, there's a body in there. Yeah. Where? You see the legs in the far corner. Okay. I'll go get this thing up here. Somebody said he was back here. He didn't say everybody did. That's the boyfriend who just showed up we've been looking for. Lieutenant. Um I just opened up a big plastic storage bin and smelled really bad. It was full of blood and towels and you can see a body in there. So, it's kind of where we're at. All right. We hooked her, bring her in. What about Everybody was saying, people, the brothers, we need to find out what they were telling officers cuz they were saying he was like in the back back there yesterday. He was coming and going. Somebody let us see him. Yeah. There's still moisture on the top of that. I open it and there's still moisture on the top. So, that's not been in there long. And there was somebody we got to talk to over there. They said, "Hey, you know, the door was open yesterday and he was coming and going and then all of a sudden his car was gone." This dude? Whose girlfriend is he? This is the brother of the Carol. No, my god daughter. I don't know. I say we bring him in and we start talking. Carol. Why don't you stand up for me? Carol, I'm going to change your handcuffs, okay? Okay. I think you know why we're going, but I suggest you all think about what you need to tell us, okay? Your turn is in the front. You need a weapon tonight? No. I might have my partner next to me over there. Evidence soon pointed directly to Carol's involvement in her mother's demise. Still, detectives needed to understand why and whether Ricky played any role. You explain the truth and then it will come out as the truth. I'm I'm not I can't give you any advice, but if you want to tell your story, you can tell it how it is. I won't ask any questions if you want to get it out, you can do that. Same time, once I tell you your rights, if you don't want to talk, you don't have to talk. That night, we're sleeping. 2:00 a.m., 4:00 a.m. in the morning, and I heard loud banging. My daughter and I were sleeping in my room in the bed. My mom was sleeping on the couch. Anyways, there was a really really big crash. And it felt like the whole room was freaking moving glass, but no I completely knocked the door off the hinges in the living room. My grandma got up. And we're running down the hallway, and she had my twin figure out of her head like an idiot. We weren't not running, we were walking fast down the hallway. And I hit with my right foot the door. It knocked the door off the hinges in the living room. And it went off. The only thing when I saw her shoulder and then I heard her gurgling. And I screamed, "Mom!" And I pulled her out of the floor. And I go to sleep. There were tears like coming out of her mouth. But I thought somebody hit broken a window or something like that. There was a huge loud crash. >> They pressed harder, breaking down Carol's overly detailed account until contradictions surfaced one by one. Going off what you said yesterday, and now said you're walking down the hallway, but it sounded like you heard a noise. And the time you ran down the river, you're walking the halls at he tripped. And the gun went off and the trigger and the gun went off. Correct? You saw your mom bleeding. So after that happened obviously you put your mom in the container in the garage. Now obviously I can't really kind of understand how she got there, but you got to explain to me to me it seems like you're back everything like you can do this by yourself. So we walk through I understand obviously panic. Everything's not planned. You're freaking out and it's your mother you love, right? And so and as we're walking out kind of walk through the minutes after all that happened. Let me ask you this was Rick there that night? Then what happened then did she leave your mom on the couch? Move her or something like that. You understand that? Very hard to understand. Obviously you're operating under panic, right? I mean that I I can picture myself in the situation and You have your daughter there. Where did you move her when Where did you move her from the house to where first? We found her in the garage. Has she moved anywhere before the ground? Right there in the garage. Okay, so this is where I I This is where I'm concerned with her. Your mom and I and I know this is a hard detail to get through, but picking up your mom, there's no way to pick her up. How long did you do that by yourself? You're just staying with me. Did Brandy tell you what went on in the house? Did having a couple of you help? Are you afraid to tell us you're afraid of Ricky? You don't have to be afraid of Ricky. You're afraid of problems. You're scared of him. Then, one final detail was introduced and it worked. Carol began to talk under the weight of her own story. The other thing I wanted to bring up is that he didn't kill your mom. I'm just saying your mom. Um They found him from I'm trying to figure out three more toes. Not that I want to start but actually fresh from the drains for that. How did those get Mhm. Okay, I don't Mhm. Have there been anything after the fact? Yeah. I didn't I'm not saying I don't feel like You know what I'm saying? I'm saying I don't maybe grow up in these situations. So, bring anything like that. Mhm. She made me I need to pick up the phone. I didn't mean to [ __ ] him up. This is where I don't want to get caught. Cuz there's once they tell us exactly how deep they were, if it was a cause of death, then we can figure out the cause. It could be really Yeah. And plus we have to get everything out here now to try to do something with those belongings that don't belong to us or anything like that. Mhm. So, I would just right now, what could have possibly caused those puncture wounds there? I don't know when she had touched him. Or anything like that. Maybe two minutes before this occurred. So, when they were doing this, did it look like Nancy I mean, first Well, like first but puncture with the end of a knife there, you think? And again, I I don't want to put words in your mouth, don't want to implicate anybody that's not implicated. That would be trouble. More trouble. That would be more trouble. But, as we sit and investigate and continue to investigate in the days and weeks most to come, more things are going to come out. I'm pretty certain of it. To bring them eventually what happened. Not to my knowledge. Then there's no way your mom would have known that. And And then did I mean, like in the moment Same thing too, that we need you to believe that you know, did you actually not have to do this? Did you actually mean to kill your mom? No, I did not mean to. Well, I'm not going to say that, but I'm going to say say Do you understand where when these things can be answered I thought not. Can I try and ask you this? What's what's going on with my trolls? Did you freak out after you heard she was still breathing and you wanted to make sure that she was at this point no good for them to be like that? Absolutely not. I thought it would have helped me keep me calm. Did did you Maybe you kind of [ __ ] see like it just sounds terrible, but like you see alive and she's howling. Just Okay. Ricky was questioned next. At first, he appeared calm and cooperative. His nerves raised suspicion, but investigators ultimately confirmed he had no involvement. He was released without charges. Carol, however, had acted alone and with intent. In the end, Carol Ray was charged with first-degree murder, felony use of a firearm, and loss of any of $20,000 or more. She now faces life in prison. Carol Ray hid her crime behind lies and manipulation. Now, Alex Jackson didn't bother hiding his motive at all. A son who chose to erase his family rather than step into responsibility. We got a door here. Who's this down here? Hey. Who are you? Oh. Sorry. Third bedroom. You got a triple homicide? On the 15th of June, 2021, police were dispatched to a home after receiving a 911 call from 20-year-old Alex Jackson who claimed an intruder had broken in and shot his entire family, including himself. When officers arrived, they were confronted with a devastating scene, but it quickly became clear what Alex reported was only part of the story, and something was seriously not adding up. You want to help one here, police? This whole needs to be checked out. We got a door here. Who's this down here? Hey. Who are you? With your dad? What happened? What happened? He came and kicked the door in. There was a man. Who else is here? My sister. She's in the back? Yeah, she's in her room. Is she okay? I I think so. What's your name? Sabrina. Sabrina! Is that her room right there? Yeah. Sabrina! She's right in back of us, behind us. I did. I got that. Hey. Zero out, police. Hey. Oh. Sorry. Third bedroom. Joey. Third bedroom? Yeah. Check. All right, there. I knew it. I think this door might connect, so I'm going to open it and see you guys out. All right? Okay. CFD Ready. All right. Dead end to this office. Got it. So we have triple homicide? Inside the home, officers found Alex's father lying on the floor, while his mother and sister were discovered in their bedrooms. All three had been shot at close range. Alex, however, showed little to no visible injuries, but no signs of forced entry, no evidence of a breaking, and no indication that anyone else had been inside. As the scene came into focus, suspicion began to center directly on Alex, whose detached demeanor stood in stark contrast to the violence around him. It's up to you. You got this. It's superficial. I know you're hurt. It makes no sense at all. Do you think it'll work better when the An entire family's been in cold blood, and the person responsible continues to deny it and shows really no remorse, which is really young. And I mean, that face, it looked like intentional. I'm honestly saying that you wanted to massacre a family. Whereas, we've given you every opportunity Did you really say I'm not that we would continue to support you. And again, my encouragement was to find a job. Um, so you could continue to stay home until you get a job. But if you didn't, then you might have to leave the house. And as soon as you get a job, as long as you can At the hospital, detectives questioned Alex Van Auken for hours. They confronted him with the inconsistencies in his story, explaining that there was no evidence to support the claim of an intruder, nor any indication that someone had stolen the family's rifle and carried out the killings. Investigators laid out what they believed was the motive. Alex's father had recently told him he needed to get a job if he wanted to continue living in the house. In the end, he was charged with three counts of first-degree murder, and after a quick trial, the jury found him guilty on all counts. He was sentenced to serve three life sentences. The Alex Jackson case wasn't an isolated tragedy. Diego Leiva would soon prove that family betrayal can take many forms. I just wanted to call you, tell you that there's Any weapons on you? I'm over here. Come over here. Step over here, bud. Step over here. Step over here. How old are you, Diego? 16. You're 16? Yes. You want more? You want more? I'm with you. On the 14th of December, 2024, 16-year-old Diego Leiva placed a 911 call just 5 minutes after attacking his parents. The call itself was chilling, not for what he said, but for how he said it. There was no panic, no shock, and no trace of remorse in his voice. I just wanted to call you, tell you that I killed my parents. I'm sorry? Well, I wanted to call you, to tell you to tell you that I killed my parents. You called 911 and said you killed your family. Is that true? Mhm. Where are you at right now? I'm in the kitchen. You want to take a seat in here, all right, boss? Yes, sir. Put your left leg in there. Oh, thank you, Diego. >> It quickly became clear that Diego was intoxicated, slurring, crying uncontrollably, and making incoherent sounds as officers tried to assess what was going on. Hey, my friend, you got some cuts on your head. We're going to go ahead and wrap them up, all right? Where are these cuts from? Did you hit your head? No. All right, just stop, okay? Even though I got a phone. They steal everything. I give you a watch. I broke the headphones. They said I act like I'm dying. No. Yes, yes. This thing right now. I broke it. The next case centers on a quiet household where a 12-year-old is accused of stabbing her brother while their mother slept. I'm so sorry. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED. IT'S SOMETHING NOT RIGHT. I'M SO SORRY. ARE THE handcuffs necessary? I'm a good child. On the 5th of January 2023, officers responded to a 911 call reporting that a 12-year-old girl had allegedly stabbed her 9-year-old brother while their mother was asleep. When police arrived, they were met by the suspect and her mother at the door. The girl could be heard apologizing repeatedly, but no words could undo what had already happened. I'm so sorry. Come here. Come here. I'm so sorry. I'M SO SORRY. I'M JUST going to put handcuffs on just for now. I'm sorry. I just need to pull my pants up. Where's the knife? I'm sorry, DAD. I'M SORRY. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO SAY. I'M SO SORRY. I'M SO SORRY. I'M SORRY. PLEASE. I'M SO SORRY. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry, Mama. I'm so sorry. How old are you? I'm 12 years old. Where's the knife? It was upstairs in my room and I threw it out the window. And it fell into the apartment right here. You threw it where? I threw it out my window upstairs. Not not right there. It's the room This is the other room. It's right behind the apartment. This apartment right here. >> So, where would the knife be on that side? >> Behind. Right behind. Yeah. I'm so sorry. I'm sorry, Mama. I'm so sorry. I DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED. THIS IS SOMETHING NOT EXCHANGED. I'M SO SORRY. >> WHAT'S YOUR MOM'S NAME? WHAT? What's your mom's name? I got to go with him. I'm so sorry. I don't know what the [ __ ] happened. I don't know what happened. I don't know what happened. Come over here so we're out of the paramedics' way. I don't know what happened. I'm so sorry. Hey, what's your name? Sit for me. Sit crisscross on the grass, okay? Okay. Just sit there for a second. You don't have the knife on you, right? >> No, I swear I don't. I'm sorry. >> Sorry. I don't. I don't. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I don't know what happened. She appeared overwhelmed with remorse, though it was unclear whether her regret was genuine or an attempt to influence how officers perceived her. Hey, how would I get to the knife? Is there the backside? >> I can show you. Okay. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. I really didn't want this to happen like this. This sucks. I'm so sorry. And then you're probably going to go to jail. And then you're going to live the rest of my life in prison. That's it right there. Okay. I'm sorry. I don't know what happened. Do me a favor. We're going to sit crisscross applesauce right here. Okay. Which one is it? First apartment right here. Take him. See if you can throw the knife over here. Stay there. I'll look at it. It's right there. Okay. I'm so sorry. I'm going crazy. I don't know what the [ __ ] I did. Stick your hands out like this for me. Why? Do you have any cuts on you? I do. Where at? Which Which arm? Both of them. But my left one has just small cuts. Did you cut yourself? Yes. Actually, not my right arm. It just has a small cut, but my left one has Sorry. I don't know what to tell you. Uh mom, and then fire and EMS are with Hey, real quick. I'm going to take you out of handcuffs and I'm going to take your hoodie off, okay? That way we can see the cut that you have. Take your hood off for me. Is it just those? Those look old. Are they old? Oh, those Yeah, those are a little Do you have any new That's from today? With the same knife? Okay. Can you watch her for just a second? Do what? I I don't know what happened tonight. so sorry. We'll figure it out. I have to go be with your brother. Make sure he's okay. Okay, I don't know what the [ __ ] I did. I'm so sorry. I love you. Despite expressing sorrow, the girl maintained her innocence. Officers, however, were faced with an unsettling situation unlike anything they had encountered before. A woman had lost her son and his killer was her very own daughter. Let's go this way. Am I going to jail? We're going to figure it out, okay? I'm so sorry. I don't know what happened. I'm so so sorry. What's your last name? How do you spell your first name? Yeah. What's your birthday? Here, let's back up so we can have room to Do you have shoes or anything? >> No, just socks. Okay. I have stickers in my in my socks right now. A lot of stickers. Is uh Is he going to the hospital? Yeah. Waiting on the right forensic doctor. Okay. I don't know what happened. It's okay. It's okay. I heard my brother screaming and I didn't know what to do, so I just ran out and then I came back cuz I didn't cuz I was scared. Can you work on calling crime scene? Yeah, I'll call crime scene. Witness texting you mom's info. I already got mom's Well, I got mom's name and phone number. Okay. So, I'll call crime scene. Well, I'll step out of the car for everything. All right, I'll be out here if anything, okay? All right. Good. How old is he? He's 9 years old. 9 years old, okay. All right. I'll be right here, okay? Just hang tight. Am I going to jail? You're not going anywhere right now. Will I be in jail? What was that? Will I Will I be in jail? Right now, let's just you know, really calm down, little okay? I don't know what we're going to do right now, all right? Right now, we're investigating. As the interaction continued, investigators noticed attempts to manipulate the conversation. Still, they remained cautious, knowing the gravity of what they were dealing with. Are the handcuffs necessary? I'm a good child. I know you're a good child, but this This is what we have to do, policy, especially if you're sitting in my car, you know? Got to itch my eye. Yeah, I know. I don't even know if my mom will want me to live there anymore. Your mom loves you, okay? Your brother loves you, too. >> trust me anymore. What are you talking about? >> They wouldn't be able to trust me anymore. I'll be put away for a long time. And then they would probably be too scared to even let me back in that house. I know, that's okay. I'm not saying that I will go to jail, but if I were to go to jail, how long would I be there for? So, that's It's kind of a difficult question. Um so, first of all, you're too young to go to jail. Juvi? So, juvenile detention and jail are two completely different things. Um cuz you're 12, correct? Yes. So, you got to be at least 13 to go to jail. Um but I have no idea if you do or don't and how long you'd be there. Okay. Police proceeded carefully, aware that the suspect was a minor, but also mindful of the seriousness of the alleged act. I wish she was here with me. She was asleep. She was good. Does she know? No, she does not know. I'm not telling her anything yet. Okay. I'll let you do it. I understand. We're going to go this way. Come right here. You can go in. No. Thanks. I'll take this guy. I'll bring it with us. We're going to come over here. Your mom's here, too. They just pulled in. Okay? I'm going to kind of walk you through everything. And we'll just go from there. Um And we'll just hang out in here for now, okay? How long am I going to be in here? Well, we're going to talk to your mom first, and then we'll talk to both of you at the same time. Okay? Okay. Do you want anything to drink? Do you want a soda? Or water? Do you want a snack at all, Kaylee? It's fine. Okay. Cuz we've got I've got snacks. It's really cold in our building, so we have a blanket for you, too. It's okay. Okay. And then um we asked are these the clothes you're wearing all night, or did you change clothes? Okay. And then if you ever need food or anything, let us know. A lieutenant spoke with the devastated mother, who struggled to accept that her daughter could be responsible for her son's death. He's breathing. They're doing everything they can. Uh but it's I just just talked to the doctor, and she was saying it's all good things right now. >> Oh, thank god. Okay. So, so I'm I'm I I I know that this is a a probably I mean I can I can understand. Hey Charles, I'm uh with Mom. Uh what's up? I'm working on it right Yeah, she just walked in. I'm working on it right now. All right. Okay, and I'm going to have uh Okay, Roger. All right. I'll call you back. Yep. Okay, and I'll send you his information and uh all right, give me 1 second and I'll Roger, I'll call you right back here in about 5 minutes. All right. Sorry about that. That was my supervisor. But I said I cannot imagine what you're going through right now. Yeah. So, this is completely So, right now she's safe and she's in custody with us right now. Uh it is a really over like I I'm I mean I was uh this is a very um There's no words I can tell you that's going to But she do that? Those are answers we're going to be looking for and Yeah, like it's just weird. They don't I mean they don't really get along that great but they I just never would have assumed she'd do something like that. It's crazy to me. Like she was like I don't know why I just crazy. I don't know. She doesn't even curse. Like I don't know. Just Yeah, I can She's not a bad kid. Like she doesn't do bad things. You know what I mean? Like she doesn't get in trouble. It was weird. What's her name? She questioned what she could have done differently. In reality, nothing could change the outcome that had already unfolded. It's so weird. I do wish she would have told him no. He asked if he could sleep downstairs and I said yes. I wish I would have said no. Well, there's nothing Don't blame your There's nothing that you could have done differently. >> tell him no. And this night I was like yeah, fine. I I mean there's nothing that you could have done differently. I mean there's Don't blame yourself for any of this. I didn't protect him. I didn't know she was going to do something. No. I don't know how I was supposed to know. It's You you I know but I feel like I didn't protect him. Like he's he's home. He's supposed to feel safe. Well, and again like It's his own sister. You know that he will never forget her. She will never It will never be There will always be issues now between them. Like what the hell was she thinking? Well, there's I mean she's 12 years old. At that age, you know, there's a lot of things going on the brain. She probably wasn't thinking. Hello. Okay, he's here. So I'll meet him in the waiting She's going to meet you in the waiting room. Are you back here? Yeah, this is the waiting room with the children's hospital. The children's emergency room. Yeah, the children's side. Okay. It's It's St. Francis Children's Society. Yeah. So, real quick, I know that I'm the probably the last person you want to talk to right now. But, so what we need is a to get is a search waiver for the apartment so we can go through, have our crime scene detectives go through, and do a thorough investigation of this. Um so, you don't have to authorize us to do this, but uh I mean, it would really aid in our investigation of trying to figure out everything that's going on. >> what happened. My daughter said she got my knife and stabbed him three times. Well, we need to find the knife, and we need to all that. >> Can I be there? Uh I just don't know. I don't have anyone there right now. >> nothing It's not like I mean, if there's any like We're not looking for any like I I I'm not saying I'm just saying like drugs or anything illegal. It's not for that. I just don't Yeah, it's fine. I'll I'm going to sign it. It just I just don't have anyone that can be there right now. In the end, the victim unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. The 12-year-old suspect, whose identity was withheld due to her age, was taken into custody and placed at the family center for juvenile justice. The last case showed how harm can come from the least expected places. Nicholas's case revealed something colder. A roommate who waited 24 hours to speak, even though the disappearance began with him. There's a bag in the bathtub upstairs with bloody I'm not sure. Something. >> I'm not so sure. Uh going in right now would be a good idea, actually. >> I'm not a bad guy. I'm happy to see On May the 2nd, 2022, the authorities conducted a welfare check on a man named Richard at his residence after 24 hours of unexplained absence. Upon arrival, officers met Richard's family and began to question his sister to get to the bottom of the situation, but nothing could have prepared them for the horror that they were about to encounter. I I yeah, that's my assumption. You have the whole family here, huh? Yeah. Uh father-in-law, mother, sister. >> Yeah, my sister. So, you're going to go and see No, we have to >> guys are going to go in He just has to stay. Yeah. They don't have to. Okay. Not you. You can hang out here with the officer. So, what's what's what's the story? Besides what I got was you guys are have, you know, don't like the roommate or there's some problems with the roommate. He has mental health issues and you haven't heard from your brother in a day? Uh, last Last I heard from him was last night and the only reason it's a concern is cuz his roommate is currently mentally unstable and brought an unregistered firearm with him a few days ago. >> Okay. Um, and they they had some kind of conflict over the weekend because he was trying to get him to move out. And then you haven't heard from him since last night. And no call, no show to work. Cool. Um, but you got the key? What's your name? Cole Christian. The officers then spoke to the victim's roommate, Nicholas, whose odd behavior was beginning to raise suspicions. Uh, no, I haven't haven't really seen him lately. He's taking a few days to get his head straight. He just wants to get away for a while. So, yeah. I don't know. That's super weird. He told me he was going to be home today. Um, he might be sleeping. You mind if I check his bedroom? Actually, if you want to check his bedroom, I suppose you should and you could, but Yeah, he might be sleeping, you know. Yeah, so please um, come on in. Hey, I was really hoping to uh, get some sleep just now, but that is not what's going on, so All right, we'll be out of your hair shortly. Oh. >> Appreciate it, man. Yeah, this is our other family. They're just worried about him. Yeah. >> to come out? I'll give you the details. Actually, that's probably okay. I could probably Uh This is probably not a good idea. Well, we're just going to go check his room. It's all good. Yeah, that's what I was trying to I appreciate it, yeah. not do. I think maybe we if we could just come outside and talk for a minute here, I would appreciate that. I says, "Oh, well, he actually did mention that he wanted to do some camping or something without her cell phone and stuff. So, he just left like 2 nights ago and I'm not sure even where he is." So, uh Did you say you had a cigarette, though? I might have a cigarette, but I got to go check my car. Okay, please. Please, you go and check your car. >> Well, you can come with me cuz they're going to go inside and look for their brother, their family member. They have a key to get in, so Yeah. >> Yep. That's probably not the best idea. No, that's a good idea. >> And the cat, too. Oh, yes. Actually, the cat does need her medication and stuff. Are you familiar with her medication? >> think Richie wanted to just leave with her. Okay, yeah, let's let's go ahead and do that real quick. Come on in. Just the cat. Huh? This car is good. Okay. No, don't No, just don't Hey, sir, what's your name? Uh Nicholas Van Cleef. Yeah, don't go in there. Uh That's really not a good idea. Uh Don't go in where? Nowhere. Nowhere. This is not a good idea. >> Bro, let's get some smokes, though. Bro, you're not you're not listening. Oh, oh my god. Why is she not hurting, though? I can't tell you. Why is she doing that? Please, stop. Come on, man. Uh I don't exactly know what's going on, but like um Do you see any smoke? >> I'm going to go look for one, yeah. >> Oh, that would be swell. Uh I haven't had a smoke for Sometimes I have them in my in my you know in my car. or so. Dang, it's a long time. >> It was As the situation unfolded, a shocking discovery was made, triggering widespread panic. Well, let's let's go let's go check his car out, man. He he said he might have one. I I know it's going to happen in that car. I can't smoke a cigarette Okay, but let me let me sit down. >> Yeah, yeah, take a seat right there. >> a very I really need to sit down, bro. No, man, there's we don't have I don't have any. No, I'm talking to her. >> No, but it's it's not a strange thing. What did he What did he do? He got him in a bag in the bathtub upstairs with bloody I'm not sure. Something like Okay. Uh did you find your family member? Yeah. Okay. All right. Okay. So, I didn't say nothing. You go this way. 216 minutes. No. No. You go. I mean, a second probably super high video. No. I thought I loved you. No. Yeah, go here. Go sit down. Go sit down. Hey, can you guys go pull the car up so that she can sit down? You need to do something. We are going to do something. Now, what I need you to do right now is I need you to go sit in your car. All right? We're going to do something. All right. Can I get another officer here besides uh Supergirl? Sir, can I get start Get your name, please? Supergirl. Oh, yes. My name is Nicholas. He went camping? Yes, sir. Did he go by himself? >> I suppose he went with a couple people. I don't know who he went He just said he wanted to go camping. He's been known to go camping for a few days. He used to do that with his parents and stuff. I don't know. And you guys have been getting along? Any problems with the two of you? No, everything's fine. Yeah, we just went camping. And he said he was with a girl or something? I don't know who he was with. He He just left. He has a girlfriend? No. Oh, okay. All right. All right. So, where are all of you guys go inside of the house? So, me and him went upstairs. And she works in the bathroom. So I checked all the other rooms. There's nothing in the other rooms. So she went for his bathroom and then I followed her in there. Is there a bathroom a common bathroom or is just for him? Just for him. So there is a common bathroom upstairs but there's nothing in that room. In the in the master bathroom. In the master bathroom. That's his bedroom. Two white trash bags coated in blood. What I would assume is blood. Heavier just picked it up by the edge of the with this hand but heavier than I'd say 25 lbs of sugar. One of the bags had what I would Did you open them up? I tried to there's like bags within bags. I'll just There was more red blood on those. But one of the bags kind of protruding out or something ripped out which I would assume is blood. And then there's more blood and more blood laying on the floor all smeared dry like 10 minutes later. And then did you guys go in the garage and look at his car? I just opened the door and looked inside and looked inside the garage. The officer went on to properly question Nicholas whose response raised more questions than answers. Nicholas I got a question for you man. So they're they're obviously worried about their family member right? And when they when they went up into his room they're telling me that they found a couple of garbage bags that are really heavy that have blood on them. Yeah I don't even know what that's about. I haven't seen them. Another question. You don't have a firearm or anything in the house do you? I don't. You do where is it? It's not loaded or anything. Yeah. It's in your room? It's not loaded. Where is it in your room? On my bed. On your bed? Yeah. Like just sitting there. Yes sir. Okay. You said it's not loaded. Where's the where's the ammunition? In the whatever the magazine maybe it's called. And where's the magazine? In the gun? No. I think No I think I cleared it out you know. You think you cleared it out? I think so. Yeah. But yeah, like I said, I don't I don't know. Insanity or something. I don't [ __ ] know. Since I plead the fifth, I don't I don't know anymore. Why you worried about pleading the fifth? Like why you why you bringing that up? I don't know what happened. You know how that works. How what works? And temporary insanity, I guess. Temporary insanity. Why you talking about temporary insanity? I don't know what you're talking about. I'm asking you why you're asking why you said those things. I have no idea. You don't know why you said I'm not sure. >> I plead the fifth and temporary insanity. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. Okay, do you have any You don't have your gun on you right now, do you? >> Absolutely not. >> you I see you have a knife in your pocket. Do I have a knife? Yeah, you have a knife. Oh, yes. Yes, I don't cuz I don't You got anything in here, either? What's what's all this? I don't think so. I don't think so. You mind if I look in here for just a little bit just feeling the outside of this back pocket, too. Is that cool? Sure. Yeah. That's just your wallet? >> That's my wallet, yes. All right. So I'm just going to set this right over here. Yep. You came back and you found him weird. Here and wanted it. And like what? You said you found him like that. What does that mean? I have no idea. Just I didn't even find him, you know. He was just Uh he just came back and then he appeared. Like I didn't find him any which way. Okay, I guess I don't need to smoke anymore or ever, actually. I don't deserve to be able to smoke cigarettes. Why why don't you deserve to smoke a cigarette? >> Cuz I don't have the money for it. Uh we're just here to check on the roommate, and they found some things that they're that make them worry. And because of that, now we're just going to go inside and and check. That's it. So, any information that you have to help, you know. Richie wasn't my good friend. Is there a camera on He's still my good friend. Why? What do you Got the wrong address. Oh my gosh. I think I'm just going to sit. Moving along so we can get out of your hair, right? The family's obviously going gone upstairs to check on their loved one. Yeah. Right? And they found some stuff that made them a little afraid. >> Yeah, like I said, I don't know. >> because he isn't here and you live here, right? We want to ask you, right? If it's cool if we go inside and check on his things. I mean, I don't know. I I have not been up here. I have not been here lately. I've been out and about trying to do DoorDash and stuff like that, you know. Do you live here? But yeah, I I live here. Yeah. Yeah, we want to go upstairs, right? And look in the master bedroom where I It's a your roommate's bedroom for him. Just to check on him and see what's in there, all right? Yeah, if that's if that's what Yeah, that I mean, wait. You want to go upstairs and do what? We want to check and make sure everybody's okay. Well, go by all means. Like, make sure everybody's okay. Yeah, I mean, Officers spoke with a neighbor seeking more details to finally solve the case. I just heard a lot of like movement. I thought something was happening over there. I just like, "Okay, whatever." It sounded like something was hitting the wall. What time was that? I want to say it was like probably midnight or like Yeah. Nicholas continued with his strange behavior, inadvertently revealing more about himself with each passing moment. >> We're just going to be signing something real quick and then we'll >> sure I'm not so sure going in right now would be a good idea, actually. What do you mean? Well, he's just uh Let him Let him stay um He's gone somewhere, is he not? I mean I'm sorry, what? Is he He's gone somewhere, is he not? >> Your roommate? Yes. Yes. Well, I don't know. Where Where did he go? He went camping. How did he get there? I don't know. He's got some friends and stuff. Yeah, I Last time I talked to him I mean I I I'm his friend, but I don't I don't talk Well, his family said he talked to him last night and he wasn't camping. He wasn't camping. >> No, I have no idea. You're saying he went camping 2 days ago and took his phone. A couple of days. Well, I don't I don't know. >> them last night. >> mentioned he wanted to not take his phone and stuff. Yeah, that's fine, but they talked to him last night. >> He talked to them last night? Who talked to him about what? His family said they talked to him last night at 7:00 p.m. >> I don't know. I don't know. He didn't tell me about it, but Okay. Yeah, I think it'd be best not to go in Oh, you don't want us to go in there? >> No, I don't think it'd be a good idea. >> Is there a reason for that? >> I No, there's no reason. It's just I still got to probably go back to work and stuff and So, I didn't do nothing. I'm not under arrest or anything like that. >> not under arrest. We're concerned with your family, which makes sense to me, too. Yeah, I mean they're they're concerned that Hey, Dietrich. Yeah. He changed his mind. No. Yeah. They saw some stuff inside that's concerning. Okay, so we want to go inside and make sure that everybody's okay. They saw some blood and stuff like that, so they're concerned that their family member could be hurt. Uh what I'm what I'm thinking is um I'm not going to think of anything. Yeah. But you don't want us going in there? You're not going to give us consent? I don't think There's no reason to. Okay. Thank you. Thank you. Wait. Uh We're We're hanging tight. How long you been living here, Nick? Five. Five, six months or so. Not Oh, that's it? Where were you having it before? Were you still here in Federal Way, or were you in a different city? Yeah, something. And I don't really recall where I was, exactly. It was Huh. Uh 702 You work at uh Jimmy John's? Jimmy John's. You have a JJ hat. I thought that was Jimmy John's. Oh, yeah, no. That's just a show hat. Like, yeah, yeah. I'm I do Door Dash. Like Oh, okay. You like it? Do I like it? Good days and bad days. It's like every job, man. But, it's you that can determine if it is a good day. Don't let other people determine if it's going to be a bad day. Yes and no. There's I can't I'm going to get a coat. I'm going to go get a coat on. Is that Can I Can I do that? You're going to get a coat on? Yeah. I'd prefer no. Why? What I What I not >> I don't want you to go back inside right now until we figure out what's going on out there. Can I go in with you? Is that Yeah. You can stand at the door. Where's the coat at? And FYI, there is a gun on the stand up in this room. The what? Never mind. Don't go back in yet. >> I'm not. Hey, we're going to go look at What? I can't walk in with you to get the coat, right? No. I was trying to The reason why I don't want you inside right now is cuz supposedly there's a gun inside. Yeah, it's upstairs. But, it's fine. And we appreciate that that you're letting us know, but for everybody's safety 100% of the time that you We're going to just keep people in away from guns. Right? Even if they're their own guns right now. So, we just want you to just That's one of the reason why we're going to kind of ask you to stop. So, I should have Oh my goodness. That So, He's not allowed in there. Uh You're not allowed in there. Cool. All right. You know what? You know what? Never mind. I don't I don't need I don't need it. I don't need it. I'm fine. While the investigation went on, the cops updated Richard's family to keep them informed and to address their concerns. We have some sort of suspicion something going on. Okay. Now, because we didn't find or you guys didn't find, you know, a human being, and that removes kind of our authority to go in for a welfare a welfare check. Right? If we If we If we If we The law says that if we have reason to believe that somebody's life is in imminent risk of, you know, or bodily harm, that kind of stuff, then we can go in right away and make sure that everybody's safe, okay? Because that doesn't exist right now. What we're doing is we have to follow the law, all right? He's asking, you know, he's said some some suspicious things, too. Have you guys already turned the prosecutor in the warrant? If it helps, I'll go back in. Yeah, well, at this time, you know, because, you know, cuz You the suspicion Well, our, you know, our hope obviously is that everything is fine and who knows what that that there is no problem. >> He really, really well. That's our hope, but if you in the event that that's not the case, we want to make sure that every any evidence that we collect, anything that we find out has was is done according to the law. She is his coworker and best friend. She's the one that originally called for the first welfare check and she was chatting with him last night, so information like family stuff, cabin and stuff. Nicholas, on the other hand, tried to play games with the cops, but they were always one step ahead of him. Don't get like totally naked. So, I No, we're going to leave that right there. But, it's my house. Yeah, and you'll get it back. Do you need to cut something right now? Cuz I don't There's nothing I don't think you have a need for it. You're not in any danger. You got three police officers protecting you. Wait a minute. I should go take a pee in in my bathroom real quick. You guys mind if I >> No, you can't go back inside. But, I like to go just pee Well, you can't go pee inside. You just can't We're not letting you back inside right now. >> So, I can pee out here. Am I going to stop you? That's very nice. Um but, I can't go back inside, but that's okay. I don't need to go back inside. Yeah, I'll just pee by the tree. I can hold it. What? You want me to hold what? Huh? You want me to hold what? I mean, you can't hold it like a big boy? Oh, yeah. Right here. I ain't going to pee. My tree, right? You guys don't want me to go pee. I don't know. Well, I mean, we don't want you to pee out in public if you can hold it. But, I understand the frustration. I was going to go inside. I was I'm going to go pee right on the tree. that way it's out of the way and nobody's in looking, right? Isn't that how people can pee or Yeah, that's how people pee outside. Yeah, cuz that's what I have to do is pee outside. You're saying hold it in? I don't know. I'm going to try to just pee real quick. Fellas, he's going to take a pee real quick. He can't hold it. You got to go? Yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't quite understand why we're I don't quite know what to do. Hey, man. Yeah, I can hold it. Then you're good. Yep, I can hold it. Yep, then you're good. I don't understand what you guys are doing. We're trying to figure that out, too, my friend. But it's not cuz you're you're a good guy. You're you're you've been talking to us, so I appreciate that. >> what? I don't need to talk to guys. I mean, I just I I do. I have I have I'm just seeing him at all lately, but I need to go. Go ahead. What do you need to do? There's something going on. Nothing's going on, man. Nothing's going on. What are you guys doing? I'm good. Do you want us to both stand right here? Uh absolutely not. I I like you over on that side and maybe him just standing right there and then I was going to go pee right there. I mean, I got this I have peripheral vision over here on this one and then peripheral vision over there on that one. Who knows, you know, but Um I'm going to say something. Hey, so uh I don't know if they kind of told you what's going on right now. Uh we have some detectives that want to come out and talk to you real quick. Right now, it sounds like we're probably going to get a search warrant for your residence. I don't think that they We don't need a search warrant, actually. I don't need a search warrant. Feel free >> We we do, though. Why do you Why would you need a Oh, you Why would you need a search warrant? That just makes it more so. >> Well, like I said, we're we're concerned about the well-being of your room. >> The suspect's confidence in escaping justice shattered as the handcuffs snapped into place, bringing him back to reality. >> Hey Nicholas, you are under arrest. Just stay seated. Okay, we're going to grab your hands and put them behind your back. I'd rather you did not I'd rather Oh, I'd rather instead of Come on, man. I'm not doing this. Think. You not Wait, I know. I'm fine. I am What is You're going to have a talk to our detectives? Why we Why we have so many people around me? There's so many people we got here right now. So, we're going to take you back to our station and have you talk to the detectives. We're going to advise you of your rights real quick. Okay. Okay. And I can't move. Is that a no? Nope, don't worry now. Don't worry. I'm not really doing so good. Like Uh Nicholas, you have the right to remain silent. Anything that you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right at this time to talk to a lawyer and have him present with you while you're being questioned. If you cannot afford to hire a lawyer, one will be appointed to represent you before questioning if you wish. You can decide at any time to exercise these rights and not answer any questions or make any statements. Uh do you understand each of these rights as I've explained them to you? Nicholas, do you understand these rights as I've explained them to you? All right, we're going to walk to our car over here, Nicholas. Upon entering the residence, officers found the remains of Richard scattered in different parts of the house alongside threatening weapons. In response to this, Nicholas's words tumbled out incoherently, seemingly disconnected from the horrific reality of his actions. All right, slide over here. Lean back so I can get this seatbelt a little loose for you. Good? I would like these cuffs off. >> Yeah, we're going to get you in just in just a little bit. We're going to walk inside. >> like these cuffs are not beneficial for me. One, two, three. Step aside right here so I can close the door. I'm going to have you go right to that door right there. We'll get you out of there in just a second. I don't know if I believe you anymore. That's what you keep saying to me. Okay, how about this? A few minutes. Well, I would like to just get out of here now and then but I I don't have a choice, do I? I'm trying to I wonder why though. I'm a good person. Why have I seen you before? I've seen you before and We've been We've been We've been hanging out and talking for like the last almost 2 hours. If that's what you mean. Although your name does kind of ring a bell. Okay, here you go. Where do I Where do I go out that way? You need to stop. I'm not a bad guy. I'm actually a good guy. Oh, yes. Please take these cuffs off. Like Yeah, we're not going to do that. >> How am I supposed to sit down? Put your feet in. We can't do this anymore. This This has to stop. I cannot keep having this happen, especially when I didn't do anything. Even though Listen to me. Okay, I'm looking for Hey, listen to me. I'm listening. You can get Even I cannot get in with these handcuffs. Listen to me. Okay, look that way for me. You're not listening. Look that way for me. I'm going to put this on you. Stop. You're not listening. I am listening. I did not do anything. But that's blaming me that did something. Can you scoot back? No, how am I supposed to No, these things are Okay, look that way again. I can't Listen. Listen. You're not Why are you not listening? I am listening. Cuz you are not I'm not important anymore. I forgot. That's not true. I'm listening to you, sir. Listen, these Here's these cuffs on my fingers. I cannot get I cannot Nicholas was eventually charged with first-degree homicide and his bail was set at $2 million. Just like in the Nicholas case, this next story began with concern, not suspicion. But when officers arrived for what should have been a routine welfare check, they instead uncovered the remains of a 68-year-old woman who had not been seen for 3 days. I understand that I'm here to do a welfare check on the occupant of this residence. They haven't heard from her since the 22nd. We got a whiff. There's something in there. On November the 6th, 2024, officers of the Las Vegas Police Department received a call reporting that a 68-year-old woman, later identified as Monique Gilbertson, had been missing for 3 days and no one had seen or heard from her since. They rushed over to her residence, but not without a locksmith. But just as the locks clicked open, they were met with the sight they least expected. Yeah, there's a bird. I locked it in. What? It's my lock. Why is that a small bird? Boyfriend's mother. Boyfriend's mother. Boyfriend's mother. Is that a old burrito? >> Hey man. Jesus. Thomas is right. I was like I just got out of the shower. I know you. Yeah, we turned on the oven. Yeah, we've been knocking. I'm I I I rent this place and I'm in What's your name? My name is Jasmine. I I I Where's Monique at? Monique is She like I'm I'm house sitting right now and she left town for a while. Where is she? Where is she? She doesn't live here. Where is she? >> No, she doesn't live here. I swear. Then where is she? I mean I'm I'm I'm >> It's not her car here. She has me house sitting and I have like you know I got my rent receipts to prove I'm supposed to be here. Huh? I'm outside. She doesn't have anyone here. No, I I have rent receipts right here actually. Come outside. Well, I'm not going to come outside right now. I have like I have I have I have paperwork that I'm supposed to be here like you know what I mean? And like >> Yeah, you need to come outside and show us that paperwork. Okay, I have paperwork right here and I'm not going to come outside right now though. Like I have I have legal rights. What's your name? My name is Jasmine. I I I was going to say Yeah, Jasmine. I'm Jasmine. I understand that I'm here to do a welfare check on the occupant of this uh residence. I am going to do that. You need to come out of there. Well, she's not here right now though. You need to step outside right now. I am giving you a legal and lawful command. If you do not obey that command, I'm going to take you to jail and I'm going to charge you with But I have I have I have Step out of that door right now. >> out of the house. No, excuse me. No, I have rights. I have I Can I get Call my attorney then? Like I I have I have First off, Monique's not not here right now. How do you contact Monique? I I call her usually on her cell phone, but she called me yesterday from her from her like friend's cell phone because her cell phone got lost and she had put a pause on her cell phone. You know what I mean? But yeah, I usually call her She usually calls me on her cell phone and I talk to her every couple days. I'm watching the dogs right now and watching the birds. Okay. So, from the front office, Mon- she doesn't go anywhere without her dogs. Yeah, I know. I've been saying that She had She had to take a She has an emergency. She had to go to her brother in in the East Coast, so you know what I mean? Like she she's not here right now. What do you want to do about it? Do you have a phone number we can contact her on? I mean like I usually call her on her on her 505 >> Yeah, but what what number did you get a phone call for? Uh um I have to look at like look at my Have you already called that number that you call her on? Okay, well I mean I don't I don't call her, she calls me generally. Every couple days, but like I've been I've been I've been here since September. >> Okay, that's great. Come outside. >> huh? Come outside. Well I I'm well I don't trust you guys I don't really trust the situation right now, you know? >> You need to step outside right now. Well what have I done wrong? Okay, I am here to check the welfare because we have concern for the safety of the lady who lives here. That is not you. You need to step out so I can check the welfare in this house. Okay, well Step out right now. I'm a resident here though. It doesn't matter. Step out by yourself. Is there anybody else inside with you? Um yeah, like my my wife is here as well. Okay, you and her need to step out. Okay, well like what are we doing wrong? We have we have been >> You're not doing anything wrong other than you are not obeying lawful commands from police officers to step outside. >> Listen, we're just trying to get in touch with Monique cuz we're came here to check her safety cuz no one's heard from her. Front office knows nothing about anyone staying here that's not her. I mean just since September they she told I'm pretty sure she told the front office No, she didn't. We just talked to the front office. Front office contacts her they say like three times a day and she's always in contact with the front office. She never mentioned anyone else being here. Okay? We've been trying to get in touch in touch with her. Her car's here. No one's heard from her. She doesn't answer the phone. I mean it's it's it's like it was it wasn't like I don't know For a second he actually believed his insistence would amount to something meaningful. But what he didn't know was that his persistent reluctance to step out of the house was beginning to make them suspect that he was hiding something. So they continued asking him questions hoping to find out whatever it was he was hiding. She's trying to talk but I I didn't get a call she hasn't been at the house I guess I ran from her a couple months ago. You know what I mean? And then like she just it was unexpected. She just said she she had to go like to see her brother and I said okay, there's some paperwork and stuff over there and and that was pretty much it. She said she'd be right back. >> Where's her brother live? Uh like the East Coast. At where? Okay, I'm not sure exactly but I've been you know I've known her for a few months but I I don't know her like like really good, you know? So you have no Yeah, you you have no way of contacting her. I mean I I use her cell phone and like I said her cell phone's on pause right now. I already Yeah, I already have her cell phone. You have her cell phone? >> What number is >> her cell phone number. Okay, cool. What number did she call you on yesterday? >> I I would have to look at my phone. Cuz you I mean I can go get it real quick if you want me to. >> No, it's fine. You can step out. Okay, well let me like let me let me let me go like let my wife know what's going on. You know what I mean? And then just give me a minute but I still don't see what the problem is. Um but yeah, just give me a minute, okay? Yeah, but the problem is that is that you're super suspicious being here and we have no idea where Monique is. That's the problem. Yeah, but I've known her but I've they've known I've been here. Okay. No one knows that though. The front office doesn't know that. Nobody knows that. I I mean I guess she she told she told several like people that she talks to this one guy regularly. She told him that like I I was here. All the security people here, the front office, the HOA, none of them has any record of you being here. All they know is >> 155. >> Okay, listen. All they know is Monique is always here, always in contact with the front office. Contacts them like three times a day, they said. They haven't heard from her since the 22nd. Her car's sitting out front. It's got some like dude's a dude's hat and some rope in it. And we And And she never leaves without her dogs, according to the front office. >> She she has something she has she has she's like letting me I'm I'm house sitting and everything for right now. You know what I mean? I've known her for a few months but I we're not here for longer than that but I'm just saying here for a few months, you know what I mean? So And then like she's told me like she wanted me to house sit to take care of an emergency, you know what I mean? I can't control that. I don't know the whole everything, you know what I mean? I'm just telling you what I was told. Okay, so if that's the case, then why won't you let us in to make sure she's not here? I mean you can go Yeah, but here's the thing like I mean like I don't want you guys trying to do anything to me. No, I want to go inside so I can confirm Monique's whereabouts. Okay, yeah, I mean, like, but can I just tell my wife that you guys are going to come in and that's it? Like, so I can You can call her out with you. Both of you need to step outside. Okay, I mean, like, you can come in and see like I'll let That is fine. Call your wife. All we're doing is checking the welfare of Monique. Tell your wife, call your wife, like, "Hey, come out come out right now. You guys step outside and then I'm going to have a couple officers come inside to clear it, okay?" Call her from right there. But how come we have to stay outside? Call her out. Call her out from right there. Okay, well, give me 1 second. Call her out. Okay, give me a second, please. Hey, babe. Yes. >> She was in the shower last time I texted you. I'll check on her real quick. Call her out. I just tried to call her. She didn't like I No, you didn't. You Call louder. Okay, hey. What's up? Um, they want to come in and do a welfare check on you. Okay. Okay, we'll pass these people off to them and I'll look for I'll clear it. Yeah, I got the remote keys. Danny, where are you at? I see you. Okay, I'm I'm going to tell him I'm going to tell him to go. Are you a welfare check? Like, what's the what's the whole thing? Like, I'm going to let you guys in. Like, you know, cuz I I didn't need to call my lawyer that I can have >> No, no, we're Once again, all we care about is this is the safety and well-being of Monique. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, I'm going to have you guys step out and have you guys wait out front while we clear the residence to make sure no one make sure there's no Huh? We rent here, so we want to make sure we can like stay inside the residence. I mean, like, We're not going to lock you out. Don't That That's not our goal here. Once again, our only goal is to make sure Monique's Monique's okay. >> That's fine. Can I Can I Can I start like come with me or like do a walk-through? Uh, no, I'm not going to have you walk with me. Yeah, I don't have to walk with you. We want to walk in the I don't want to leave the residence cuz your your one officer made me nervous. Okay, that's the that That's not our intention here, okay? Our intention is to conduct an investigation to find Monique. So, if you and your girlfriend can step out front maybe provide my partner with the information I don't know if I can for sure reach her right now cuz I wasn't able to reach her yesterday. Okay. But, at least provide us with a phone number to reach you on so so we can at least talk to a family member down there or something but to to confirm her whereabouts. >> I mean I told you I I can't promise you you're going to be able to do that cuz I can't get a hold of her. But, we would like to try. Is that okay with you? I mean like but what if you don't get a hold of her? That's my only thing. That's the At that point, it was obvious that he was hiding something but they still had to figure out how to get into the house without resorting to desperate measures. That's That's not what we're worried about, okay? All we're trying to do is get a hold of her. Okay? Does that work? I mean I give you Here's my only thing like I If you guys can't get a hold of her today, I like what like are you guys going to try and mess with me? I mean I have like a little rights to do here. >> that's We're not going to try and mess with you, okay? We just want to We just want to make sure she's okay. That's That's all. >> Okay, well she She's not here right now. I don't know you know she's I mean as far as I know she she was fine two days ago when I talked to her but yesterday I couldn't get a hold of her. You know what I mean? Monique, listen listen listen, okay? You're trying to think we're going to jam you up here. That is not our intention. Our only intention is to confirm her whereabouts. If we cannot confirm them and I confirm that she's not here I'll leave you guys alone but can you guys please step outside so I can go through the residence to make sure she's not here. I mean like but you know the only thing is like I don't give legal rights to search your house or like search anything on the property except for We're not I'm going to I'm going to go places where a human would be. I'm not going to go through your drawers. I'm not going to go through all that. I'm going to go places where a human would be, okay? That is the only only thing I'm doing in here. Okay, well I mean just in case you guys like change up your stuff, can I at least go get my purse and I can and just in case you guys like change up on me? We have We have legal reason to come inside to check her welfare and that is it. Okay, well can I let you guys in then I'll leave you to your partner over here maybe I'm scared to come outside. I'm afraid to come outside cuz of what your partner said. >> No, that's not Listen to me, okay? Listen to what I say. We're here to make sure she's okay. We're not trying to jam you up. The more you cooperate, the easier it's going to be for us and the quicker we can be done with this. Okay? I just want to like I just want to like I just I'm just getting nervous now cuz the guy told me like and then my partner >> Don't worry about what he said. Can you please step outside? We're not going to put you in handcuffs. We're just going to have you sit out here and try and give us some information so we can get a better understanding of where Monique is and why she's all of a sudden gone missing. Okay. Okay? Well, uh yeah, that's fine. It's like I'm just nervous cuz I >> I understand you're nervous, but can you please open the door? And like uh you guys I just want to do it now cuz I uh Open the door, please. >> Okay, so can we stay in the residence? No, you stand right here. You stand right here on the balcony, okay? Well, if I come outside then you guys have like the legal right to like mess >> No, we don't. >> There still is no legal right. We have as much legal right now as we do >> You So, you're confused. You think we're here cuz we care about you. I don't care about you. I care about Monique. And trying to get a hold of Monique. It's weird that you are being very defensive about this.
